2 Radio Stations Drop Rush Limbaugh's Show

rush limbaugh

Two local radio stations, in Hilo, Hawaii, and Pittsfield, Mass., have dropped Rush Limbaugh's show in the wake of an advertiser boycott of the conservative talk show host after he called a Georgetown University student a "slut" because she supported healthcare coverage for contraception.

It's too early to say whether Limbaugh will suffer the fate of Glenn Beck—who was ultimately banished from Fox News Channel after advertisers dropped his show when he called the president a racist.

But if the end ever comes for Limbaugh, this is what it would look like: A small drip of defections from his more marginal markets and sponsors, followed by a dam burst when major clients and supporters decide his audience is no longer worth the headaches it produces.

Peter Barry, Pittsfield's WBEC 1420 station chief, said:

"The nature of Rush's programming has always presented challenges for us and he's always pushed the envelope. But this time he's taken it too far."

Chris Leonard, boss of KPUA AM 670 said:

"The most recent incident has crossed a line of decency and a standard that we expect of programming on KPUA whether it is locally produced or a syndicated program like the Rush Limbaugh show."

If Limbaugh did lose his distributors, it would not be a disaster. He could simply do exactly what Beck did, which was to move his operations to the web where he would be less likely to draw fire from a more carefully targeted audience.

Stay tuned (as they say)!

UPDATE: Tim Tebow Will NOT Be On 'The Bachelor'

Tim Tebow The Bachelor

If it were up to the popular show's host, Tim Tebow would be the next star on "The Bachelor."

Host Chris Harrison was on Access Hollywood Live Monday, and said he had spoken to Tebow about the possibility (via Larry Brown Sports).

“I’ve actually met Tim Tebow. I met him about becoming our next ‘Bachelor.’ I think he’d be a great ‘Bachelor.’”

Although Harrison claims Tebow was receptive to the idea and even said "yes," he doesn't think it would ever actually happen.

“He has a little job called quarterback at least for another year.”

There's also a chance Taylor Swift may have something to say about that, too.

UPDATE

Tebow has denied the rumors, but not without poking fun at a former Florida Gator quarterback who did star on "The Bachelor."

These 15 Films Tanked At The Box Office, Despite Huge Production Budgets

John-Carter-Disney-Box-Office

The first major blockbuster of the year is here, folks!

Disney's "John Carter" comes out this Friday and most people know absolutely nothing about it.

The film comes from the mind of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, who wrote the 11-volume tale of a dying Mars and John Carter—the earthling brought to the planet to save all who inhabit it.

Disney shelled out $250 million big ones for the production helmed by Pixar director Andrew Stanton, who previously directed "Finding Nemo" and "Wall-E."

That's a lot of dough and pressure to throw on someone who's directing a live-action film for the first time and Taylor Kitsch, whose most starring role to date is as a small town football player on the acclaimed "Friday Night Lights."

With marketing confusion surrounding the movie's title to rumors that the film went over budget, "John Carter" might become 2012's first big-budget box office bomb.

But considering the intriguing trailer and the impressive, just-released 10-minute scene from the movie, we certainly hope the film ends up a success.

So while we wait for the results, let's take a look at some of the biggest box office bombs of the last 30 years.

"Battlefield Earth" (2000)

Scientology's experiment with Hollywood starring John Travolta was not only a terrible movie but had an embarrassing result.

The alien invasion film eventually made under $30 million and won an astonishing nine Razzies total including ones for Worst Picture and Worst Actor for Travolta.

Total Production Cost: $73,000,000

Worldwide Gross: $29,725,663

Total Loss: 70.59%

"Soldier" (1998)

This Kurt Russell vehicle about a soldier who must learn human feelings and save the world was a terribly entry in the science fiction genre.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson would fare much better commercially four years later with "Resident Evil" but this film was a big box office and critical bomb.

Total Production Cost: $60,000,000

Worldwide Gross: $14,594,226

Total Cost: 75.68%

"The Alamo" (2004)

Remember the Alamo?

Well no one remembered to go to this movie about the historic fight at the Alamo anyway.

Even stars like Billy Bob Thorton and "The Lost Boys" heartthrob Jason Patric couldn't save this giant flop.

Total Production Cost: $107,000,000

Worldwide Gross: $25,820,000

Total Loss: 75.87%

best movie theaters in homes

Viewing a movie in your home, before it has been released in theaters, is a rare luxury you can't find many places than in the private screening rooms of the movie elite.

Movie moguls first built private screening rooms in the 1930s and 1940s to view competitors' films.

In the past few years, they have become an essential work and social accessory in mansions around the U.S. and especially in Los Angeles, according to The Wall Street Journal's Lauren A.E. Schuker.

George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Zemeckis and Stephen Spielberg are among the A-listers with theaters in their homes.

Of course, such amenities don't come cheap. According to the WSJ:

The cost of a top-of-the-line screening room averages $500,000 but can run up to $2 million or more with all the bells and whistles, according to Joseph Cali, a high-end home-theater designer and installer who built the screening rooms for George Clooney, Matt Damon and Tom Cruise. In Hollywood, few on the circuit have a screen smaller than 14 feet in width, says Mr. Cali. Most are 16 to 18 feet.

Want your own personal movie theater? Zillow helped us round up some on-the-market mansions with awesome screening rooms, from California to Colorado.

This home on Walker Road in Hidden Hills, Calif. is on sale for $5.951 million.

The theater inside has leather seats with cup holders and a ceiling that's painted to look as if it is the sky.

INFOGRAPHIC: Why Jay-Z And Madonna Have Davy Jones To Thank For Their Paychecks

Davy Jones Madonna Jay-Z

Last week, The Monkees' frontman Davy Jones passed away at the age of 66 from a heart attack.

While younger generations may have had to google the legendary singer's name, what most don't realize is that Jones—who some call the original Justin Bieber—paved the way for "360-degree" music deals now implemented by the likes of Jay-Z, Madonna, Robbie Williams and U2.

By using a 360 deal, "an artist gives up partial rights to multiple revenue streams in exchange for a hefty advance," reports Forbes. "It came on the heels of British pop star Robbie Williams’ 80 million pounds-sterling pact with EMI in 2002; Madonna followed by signing a $120 million agreement with Live Nation in 2007."

But Jones and The Monkees were among the first to be a part of such a deal with a record company. They were formed in 1966 as performers in a TV show with a contract that controlled their music, identities and their pay packets.

Below, Statista.com charts the evolution of 360 music deals throughout the years.

Six Scandalous Takeaways From Nicollette Sheridan's Desperate Housewives Trial

$
0
0

desperate housewives1Former Desperate Housewivesstar Nicollette Sheridan is suing ABC and show creator Marc Cherry for wrongful termination, and the dramatic trial is proving "better than an episode ofDesperate Housewives," says Willa Paskin at New York.

Sheridan's character, neighborhood vixen Edie Britt, was killed off the nighttime soap in 2009. She says the firing was unlawful, and that it unfairly robbed her of the $4.2 million she earned each year, plus residuals.

As Sheridan, Cherry, and the show's other stars take the witness stand, here's a look at some of the juiciest revelations:

1. Sheridan claims Cherry hit her
Sheridan alleges that Cherry once hit her in a fit of anger, and that she was fired because the incident made it uncomfortable for him to work with her. Sheridan says Cherry lost his cool at the end of a 2008 rehearsal, after she questioned the deletion of a funny line from a scene. "It was a nice wallop across the head," Sheridan said during testimony last week. "I'm not accustomed to being hit. It was shocking, humiliating, demeaning, and it was unfathomable to me that I'd just been hit by my boss."

2. His apology was laughable
Sheridan says that after Cherry slapped her, he went to her trailer to apologize. "I'm on bended knee begging your forgiveness," she quoted him as saying. Then he hugged her and "told her he liked her new trailer design," says Paskin. Sheridan says she wasn't impressed. "I thought he could at least apologize again and send flowers."

3. Sheridan's co-stars will testify against her
Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, James Denton, and Neal McDonough may have played Sheridan's friends and neighbors on Wisteria Lane, but the Desperate Housewives actors won't be in her corner whenthey take the witness stand. The group will all be called to the stand on behalf of Cherry, and will testify against their former co-star. Each actor is expected to spend 30 minutes on the stand.

4. Housewives loves killing characters off
The defense says Edie's death wasn't unprecedented, as the show routinely sweeps characters aside to shake things up. To prove it, the defense showed a video montage of every character who has been killed off. There were roughly 43 characters, and the video was seven minutes long. Sheridan's lawyers maintain that Edie's death scene was unnecessarily gruesome. The character escapes from her husband, who was strangling her, drives away in a car, crashes into a tree, survives, gets out of the car, and steps into a puddle with a power line in it, which electrocutes her. "A triple homicide,"her lawyer quipped

5. Sheridan may be perjuring herself
Was it a hit or a slap? "I don't know why they're different!" Sheridan yelledat Marc Cherry's attorney from the witness stand. "You are such a stickler for details!" The lawyer was pressing Sheridan on discrepancies in documents she had filed in her suit: Some claim that she was "slapped" by Cherry, while others say she was "violently hit." Sheridan testified last week that she was "hit upside the head." Cherry's attorney told her that changing her testimony to "slapped" or other language could qualify as perjury. "This is ridiculous to me," Sheridan said. "Calm down, Ms. Sheridan," the judge responded. The actress then began doing breathing exercises on the stand.

6. Cherry allegedly handled other stars roughly, too
It's not just Sheridan who was manhandled by Cherry. The actress also alleges that Cherry was "prone to picking Eva [Longoria] up in the air and moving her to show her where he wanted her to stand in a scene."

Rosie O'Donnell snatched up a $2.5 million townhouse on West Grace Street in Chicago just a few months ago, to have a place to stay while filming her new talk show on The Oprah Winfrey Network.

But now the house is back on the market, according to The Real Estalker.

The show films in Chicago, and while O'Donnell originally said she'd commute from New York, where she currently lives she soon realized that the company-provided apartment was sufficient, the Real Estalker wrote.

The current sale price is the same one O'Donnell paid back in the fall.

The home is a 6,000-square-foot brick-and-limestone townhouse on an extra-wide lot in the Lakeview neighborhood on the north side of Chicago.

The three-story house has five bedrooms, five baths, and two half baths.

OPI polish collections are becoming a pretty popular—and clever—marketing tactic. "The Muppets" released their own fall line with the company and so have celebrities from Nicki Minaj to the Kardashian crew.

So its no surprise our favorite web-slinger is receiving his own OPI line.

"The Spider-Man Collection" comes on the heels of "The Hunger Games" China Glaze polish backed by Lionsgate.

True to the high-end polish line, the collection contains six aptly-named hues to capture the film's essence. Polish colors include "Call Me Gwen-ever" for Emma Stone's Gwen Stacey and "Just Spotted the Lizard" for the villain of the same name.

Don't get prepared to buy them though as colors won't hit stores until May.

Although OPI has featured the majority of celebrity lines, they haven't released them all. Lines China Glaze and NOX have marketed exclusive polishes as well for Hollywood blockbusters.

13 Interesting Facts About The Most Interesting Man In The World

jonathan goldsmith dos equis

For Jonathan Goldsmith, 73, art imitates life.

Goldsmith has played Dos Equis' spokesman for six years, and his life off screen almost rivals his elaborate persona as The Most Interesting Man In The World.

If you believe what the copywriters have to say, "He’s been known to cure narcolepsy, just by walking into a room," "He once had an awkward moment, just to see how it feels," and "His beard alone has experienced more than a lesser man’s entire body."

If you believe what Goldsmith has to say, and we do, the truth is just as interesting.

Goldsmith's character has also been marketing gold for Dos Equis, which was acquired by a struggling Heineken in 2010. Anthony Bucalo, an analyst at Banco Santander SA, told Bloomberg that the ads serve as "one of the best advertising campaigns in the U.S."

Dos Equis sales have increased every year since Goldsmith joined the campaign in 2006. According to Beer Marketer's Insights, Dos Equis has gained 15.4 percent in U.S. shipments last year, which is much better than the 2.7 percent average growth for the top 10 imports.

Manischewitz is his second favorite alcoholic beverage.

The "Mexican" paragon is actually a Russian Jew who grew up in the Bronx.

In the words of Adam Wills, a senior editor at the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, Jonathan Goldsmith, "the actor who portrays the Most Interesting Man in the World is more likely to attend a bar mitzvah than a Quinceañera."

He partied his way out of college.

Every interesting man has a backstory.

During his second year at NYU, Goldsmith was asked to leave for excessive partying and a fling with a professor.

What did she teach?

"I won't tell you," he told Popeater. "She taught the good moves. Ha!"

The Most Interesting Man In The World isn't afraid of anyone.

Goldsmith once told off Dustin Hoffman.

Competing young actors on the New York theater circuit, Goldsmith and Hoffman did not get along. Goldsmith reportedly told his cohort, "Dustin, the reason you don't like me is because I'm gonna make it and you're not."

10 Celebrities Who Got In Hot Water With The IRS

$

willienelsonWhat is it with celebrities and the IRS? Seems like every time we turn around, another boldface name has run into trouble with the taxman.

Most recently, Kirstie Alley was hit with a $41,395 bill, including interest and fees, for back taxes on her $1.73 million Florida mansion, but Al Pacino, Snoop Dogg and Forest Whitaker have also recently been in hot water with Uncle Sam.

PHOTO GALLERY: 10 Celebrities Who Ran Into Tax Trouble with the IRS

It is a common belief that the Internal Revenue Service deliberately targets celebrities in order to keep the rest of us in line. (The IRS didn’t respond to a request for comment.) And there may be a few legitimate reasons why celebrities just can’t seem to pay (or even file) their taxes. Surrounded by agents, managers and accountants, celebrities who have made piles of money fast sometimes don’t keep a close enough watch on their handlers. Other celebrity tax “mistakes” are just like the knuckle-headed errors we make — failing to file an extension, mixing up personal and corporate expenses, forgetting to include all sources of income. It may actually be harder for A-listers to figure out what they owe, given the erratic nature of their pay cycles and big windfalls.

Ja Rule

Money owed: $1 million plus penalties

Prison sentence: 2-3 years

The rapper and actor pled guilty to tax evasion last April in a Newark, N.J., federal court. Admitting that he hadn’t paid tax from earnings in 2004 and 2006, Ja Rule will pay more than $1 million in back taxes and penalties and serve two years in prison. Though the MTV Video Award winner did catch a break: He will be able to serve his federal sentence concurrently with the two years he’ll already be serving in New York for attempted possession of a weapon stemming from a 2007 incident — the same incident that put rapper Lil Wayne in behind bars for nine months.

Martin Scorsese

Money owed: $2.85 million

Prison sentence: None

The Academy-Award winning director made headlines last March when it was revealed that the IRS had a levied a $2.85 million lien against him. And in a plot twist worthy of Casino, the bill was delivered on Valentine’s Day. A spokesman for the director has since said that any monies owed had been paid in full and the matter was now closed. But it isn’t Scorsese’s first run in with the IRS — he’s had a series of big liens since 2002, according to the New York Post. It’s been reported that Scorsese’s tax troubles stem from his relationship with Kenneth Starr, his financial advisor from the nineties until last year, just months before Starr pleaded guilty to a $33 million Ponzi scheme and was sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

Willie Nelson

Money owed: $16.7 million

Prison sentence: None

Let’s not forget that the country singer, enthusiastic defender of marijuana and friend of President Jimmy Carter, is still the only person to admit to smoking pot in the White House. So his 1990 tax troubles had a distinct counter-cultural rebel vibe. The IRS seized his property claiming he owed $16,700,000 in back taxes. Nelson had settled with Uncle Sam for $6 million but when he couldn’t come up with the money, the Feds sent his possessions (including six houses) to auction. In classic outlaw style, the only asset Nelson sent into hiding was his guitar, Trigger. Nelson also received an undisclosed settlement from the Price Waterhouse accounting firm to settle claims that they’d involved the Farm Aid founder in bad tax shelters.

Wesley Snipes

Money owed: $17 million

Prison sentence: 3 years

On December 9, 2010, Wesley Snipes, the actor best known as the vampire in Blade, reported to the McKean Federal Correctional Institution to serve three years for the failure to file federal taxes for three years. Convicted in 2008, Snipes also owed the government 17 million dollars in back taxes. Even now, Snipes charges he was targeted by the IRS for his celebrity and given a disproportionately long sentence compared to similar convictions.

Richard Hatch

Money owed: $2 million

Prison sentence: 4 years

Fifty-two million people watched Hatch take home the Survivor’s first million-dollar prize, so it only makes sense that the IRS knew about it. In January of 2006 Hatch was convicted of failing to list his winnings on his tax return and was sentenced to jail and home confinement for more than three years. Yet Hatch, most recently on Celebrity Apprentice, was again busted in 2010 for … failing to file his taxes. Sentenced to nine months, he was released from prison in December.

Here's What Conservatives Are REALLY Thinking About The Rush Limbaugh Ad Boycott

$

angry man

Since the advertising boycott of Rush Limbaugh's show began—at least 36 companies have pulled their media schedules from his show—our comments boards have filled up with hundreds of posts from conservatives supporting Rush. Although B.I. readers are always a vocal bunch, this outpouring is on a scale above that. You can read some of their hundreds of comments here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here.

The gist of their defense is that liberal commentators (such as Ed Schultz) have also made offensive remarks about women and not been called to account in the same way.

They also believe that the pressure brought to bear on Limbaugh's advertisers amounts to politically correct censorship of robust debate.

These points may have some merit, but they don't address the central problem conservatives have with the ad boycott: This isn't the left's fault, or Obama's fault. It's Rush's fault.

Here's a selection of what B.I.'s readers are saying.

  • voting for republican in 2012 election: BI closet obama voters coming out of the woodwork again to bash Rush, even after he apologizes twice, or that the majority of Americans not only agree with Rush's commentary, but empathize with him regarding the unfair treatment by the media.
  • BreitbartIsHere: All this proves is that the left succeeded in pressuring some sponsors to end their association with the show. So?
  • All Is Fair: Any advertiser that would pull out is caving to the progressive pressure machine. I am canceling my subscription to Carbonite because of this.
  • Oh Pleaae: AOL and Huffington Post are affiliated. No wonder there is such a uproar over something so inconsequential. It's all manufactured by the left, even the fake congressional hearing Fluke spoke at.
  • Maritxu: Has "Free Speech" died in this country? It doesn't matter whether you agree or disagree with Rush's comments. Rush's advertisers have no business trying to punish him for speaking out. Rush needs to let us know the names of every one of these advertisers, so that we the people can boycott every one of them because they do not believe in Free Speech.
  • BARACK OBAMA LOVE FEST: Advertisers are dropping simply to get their name in the news and a positive vibe among the brainless, strategically-retarded liberals, then they'll be right back to advertising on his show.
  • Romney 2012: The left is manufacturing outrage over this Rush Limbaugh slut comment at least 90% of Americans either agree with rush of simply don't care

Note the repeated theme: That somehow this is a fake scandal generated by the left, and that liberal attacks on Limbaugh are per se unfair.

The problem with this angle is that it's demonstrably untrue. The scandal was generated entirely by Limbaugh's own words. What makes it especially infuriating for conservatives is that the battle has been fought using the traditional weapons of the free market: the supply and demand of dollars (advertiser dollars in this case).

The irony that is driving conservatives nuts is that this isn't another Obama plot—it's capitalism working exactly the way it should. And they just can't stand it.

KONY

If you have a Twitter or Facebook account, you have most likely seen someone in your network posting about the "KONY 2012" YouTube video.

The video, created by Invisible Children co-founder and filmmaker Jason Russell to unite and motivate people all over the world via social media, already has over four million hits on YouTube since it's release... yesterday.

And over 30,000 "likes" in six hours on the "Stop Kony 2012" Facebook page.

The goal of the film is to stop one of the world's worst war criminals, Joseph Kony—leader of the Christian terrorist group, the LRA, in Uganda. Kony is responsible for mutilating innocent people and kidnapping children to be used as soldiers.

"The next 27 minutes are an experiment, but in order for it to work you have to pay attention," Russell states in the beginning of the 30-minute film. "If we succeed, we change the course of human history...but time is running out."

Watch the video below and pass it on to make Kony famous—not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

We promise it is worth your time.

From Box Office Babe To Primetime Hopeful—The Evolution Of Ashley Judd

Ashley-Judd-Main-Thumbnail

TV Midseason is here and one of the many shows we have to look forward to (or dread) features the return of 43-year-old actress Ashley Judd

While Judd made her name in movies like "Double Jeopardy," she's trying out the small screen with a series that looks... well, exactly like a lot of her big screen films.

ABC's "Missing" follows Judd's character Rebecca Winstone as she desperately tries to find her son when he disappears during a summer internship in Italy.

Winstone and her recently deceased husband ("Game of Throne" star Sean Bean) were CIA-agents so she uses all of her old tricks. Think "Taken" with a woman.

In honor of Judd's new show and subsequent comeback, we've compiled a list of things you may not know about the "Kiss the Girls" actress, including her affinity for Kentucky University basketball games and an Estee Lauder beauty line.

Judd comes from a famous family.

Born in 1968 in California, Judd is the daughter of country singing star Naomi Judd and the half-sister of Wynona Judd

Judd took over the independent film scene.

1993's "Ruby in Paradise" was a breakout film for Judd. She played Ruby, a young girl who leaves Tennessee to work at a souvenir store in a Panama City resort.

The film is based off of Jane Austen's classic "Northanger Abbey."

So close yet so far...

Judd originally shot scenes for the serial killer film "Natural Born Killers" by director Oliver Stone. But her scenes were left on the cutting room floor.
