Aaron Rodgers Miss America Laura Kaeppeler

Remember when Miss Wisconsin/Miss America Laura Kaeppeler said "call me" to Aaron Rodgers during the pageant's broadcast?

Well, we're not sure if digits were exchanged or not, but Rodgers met Miss America at a recent Milwaukee Bucks game.

Kaeppeler was there to sing the National Anthem Monday and Rodgers surprised her during halftime.

He showed up at her guest suite at the Bradley Center and introduced himself.

If only Kaeppeler payed more attention to Twitter she would've known Rodgers hinted at how excited he was to see her perform.

BREAKING NEWS: Vulture has reported that Ben & Jerry's is releasing a new "Mad Men"-themed ice cream flavor, and it's called Sterling Scooper (a riff on the show's agency Sterling Cooper).

Hey, if Jeremy Lin deserved his own ice cream flavor, however controversial it was, then certainly our favorite silver fox, silver-tongued Roger Sterling deserves his own as well.

This ice cream would have really come in handy for consoling purposes during the show's excruciatingly long 17-month hiatus. "Mad Men" will return for its season five premier on March 25.

THREE DECADES OF THIN: How The Fashion Business Promotes Anorexia

$
0
0

allie crandell revolve

It's not news that the fashion business prefers skinny models in its ads; that some models are anorexic; and that women who aren't skeletally thin end up with negative feelings about their bodies because of these ads (according to this study).

What is less obvious is the process that governs the way this works. Or that it's even a process, embedded into the industry.

You can trace the history of thinness in fashion models back to Twiggy in the 1960s, but it was only in the 1980s that designers began favoring ultra-thin models in earnest. Kate Moss for Calvin Klein was the tipping point: Her waif-like looks set a new weight standard for models well below that of the average adult woman. From that point on, Klein deliberately favored Moss and other ultra-thin models in his ads.

Today, some advertising and magazine editors have to edit fat back on to models' bodies in Photoshop. A fashion-shoot stylist once told B.I. that it was not uncommon for "plus-size" models to show up looking much thinner than their job titles would suggest—and with padding under their clothes to make themselves look more substantial.

In Europe, authorities have moved to ban ad imagery featuring impossibly thin women.

The issue made headlines again earlier this week when the editor of PLUS Model complained that former plus-size model Crystal Renn had slimmed down from a size 16 to a sample size, after she appeared in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition. Renn has struggled with an eating disorder.

How did we get here?

1985: Calvin Klein launches Obsession. He says he later used Kate Moss to popularize the 'waif' look.

The designer told WWD he liked Moss, who appeared on Obsession ads through the 1990s, because she was "always thin":

The reason for Kate [Moss] and this whole group of women I found that someone named “waifs” was because before that, a lot of women were getting breast implants and doing things to their buttocks. It was getting out of control. I just found something so distasteful about all that. I wanted someone who was natural, always thin. I was looking for the complete opposite of that glamour type that came before Kate.

Carre Otis, another Calvin Klein model from the 1980s, was actually anorexic.

She suffered heart damage because of it.

The problem begins with the fashion shoot.

Designers make their sample sizes—the clothes models wear for ads and editorial spreads— smaller and smaller, forcing the models who wear them to get thinner and thinner. Some models show up at fashion shoots looking so unhealthy that photo editors are forced to add fat to their bodies in retouching, and to airbrush out their protruding bones. Former Cosmopolitan U.K. editor Leah Hardy confessed:

"Thanks to retouching, our readers - and those of Vogue, and Self, and Healthy magazine – never saw the horrible, hungry downside of skinny. That these underweight girls didn't look glamorous in the flesh. Their skeletal bodies, dull, thinning hair, spots and dark circles under their eyes were magicked away by technology, leaving only the allure of coltish limbs and Bambi eyes."

20 Beautifully Simple Movie Posters Made By Hollywood's Undercover Artist

thankyouforsmoking-theusualsuspects-matt-owen

Scour the Web and you can find any number of fan-produced mock movie posters—Google "'The Dark Knight' fan made posters"—and, although some are quite good, none have gained as much popularity as those produced by Matt Owen.

Rather than going overboard with Photoshop and special effects, Owen keeps his posters simple. Real simple. Following the model, less is more, he produces minimalist movie posters—a deconstruction of a film to its recognizable symbols (example: "Harry Potter" = Lightening bolt scar).

Owen, an Art Director from Little Rock, Arkansas, has been producing minimalist movie posters since 2010 as a side project.

"Call it a cure for boredom. I have always been a pretty big movie fan, (and admittedly a little obsessed with '80s movies)," Owen tells Business Insider. "I thought minimalism could be a fun way to convey something as big as a whole plot, or just give a shout out to a single funny moment in a film."

So far, he has produced over 80 original pieces. From horror flick "Psycho" to '80s teen flick "Breakfast Club," to Spielberg's "E.T.," Owen has covered a wide array of pop-culture favorites and Hollywood blockbusters.

After a friend suggested Owen turn his hobby into a blog, he created Brickhut. It wasn't long until his work began to gain attention from some pretty big fans in Hollywood.

"Over the past few months, I have gotten some pretty fun poster commissions from clients like Paramount Pictures and director Jason Reitman."

So much for a side project.

If you went to the midnight premiere of "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol," or saw the film during its opening week, you may have been one of the lucky few to get one of Owen's latest creations. He produced two similar, but contrasting posters for Tom Cruiseshighest-grossing blockbuster

Galley1988 also commissioned Owen to produce a limited-edition "Young Adult" poster for viewers of an early Hollywood screening. Director Reitman ("Up in the Air") has also come out publicly as a fan.

"They're spectacular," said Reitman in an interview for "Young Adult." "He's one of the best out there. They're all so clever."

In the interview, Reitman admitted he didn't realize Owen previously produced a poster for one of his earlier films, "Thank You For Smoking."

So, how long do these posters take to create? According to Owen, most don't take long at all.

"Some of them can be done in just an hour or two," he says. "Others take a little longer, maybe a couple days. With most of these, the idea just hits me, and I get right to work on it."

Among his favorite creations? "Die Hard" and "A Clockwork Orange."

Owen currently sells his artwork online with posters and prints starting at $12.34.

However, for the popularity of his series, he doesn't hang any of them in his own home. He sticks to collecting original movie posters.

Currently, Owen is working on another "fun project." Unfortunately, he couldn't share which, but we cannot wait to see.

He joked, "I would love to talk about it, but I have been warned not to, under penalty of death."

"Big"

"There Will Be Blood"

Owen's limited-edition "Young Adult" poster given out in Los Angeles.

Boo dog

Trippy, a social travel site created by JR Johnson, has been redesigned to look a lot like Pinterest for travel.

In addition, it has added a slew of influential advisors, from fashion designers to singers to animals.

Yes, animals.

Trippy's advisory board includes Jason Mraz, Rachel Zoe, Anthony Bourdain, Kevin Rose, Tim Ferriss, Randi Zuckerberg, Andrew Zimmern, Gary Vaynerchuk, Chase Jarvis, Soleil Moon Frye, Soraya Darabi, Johnny Jet, Veronica Belmont Kim Mance, Brett Snyder, Gary Arndt, Peter Shankman and Boo, the "world's cutest dog."

The advisers have diverse backgrounds because Trippy wants to offer unique travel experiences for users of all walks of life.  Someone who's a foodie may want a very different vacation than a pet lover or fashionista.

We assume Boo's owners will do most of the advising while the pup models and promotes Trippy on its social media pages.

Trippy's new design lets people browse photos of resorts and destinations. They can save the images to visual inspiration boards too.

Here's what it looks like. There's even a Trippy bookmarking tool so users can pin photos to the site.

Here's Whitney Houston's Will That Leaves Everything To Bobbi Kristina

Bobbi Kristina"Inside Edition" reported that Whitney Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, was left everything in the singer's will. The estate is valued at approximately $20 million, according to TMZ.

Guess she won't be needing that benefit money from funeral footage, after all.

According to a 19-page document released on Wednesday in Atlanta, Georgia, the late singer's daughter will receive "all household furniture, clothing, jewelry, automobiles and insurance polices."

For now, the money is being placed in a trust for the 19-year-old Bobbi Kristina. She will receive increments when she turns 21, 25 and the last installment at age 30, according to "Inside Edition."

Although the will, originally drafted in 1993, was amended in 2000 after her marriage to Bobby Brown, her ex-husband will receive nothing.

However, Houston's mother Cissy wouldn't have been the sole beneficiary if Bobbi Kristina passed before her. According to the documents released, Bobby Brown would have also received Houston's property.

"If no child survives me:

(1) I give all jewelry I own at my death to my mother, Emily Cissy Houston, if she survives me; and

(2) I give the rest of my tangible personal property (or all of my tangle personal property if my mother does not survive me) to those of my mother, Emily Cissy Houston, my father, John R. Houston, my husband, Robert B. Brown, my brother, Michael Houston, and my brother, Gary Houston."

See part of the 19-page document, via "Inside Edition" here

Bobbi Kristina will open up to Oprah Winfrey this weekend in her first interview since her mother's death this Sunday on her OWN network.

Here's How Much Money The Rush Limbaugh Ad Boycott Will Rearrange

$

Highway Exit

Rush Limbaugh's advertisers spent $363 million on all of radio last year, and the advertiser boycott of his show could rearrange millions of that, according to Nielsen.

As of today, 45 advertisers have pulled their media schedules from Limbaugh's show after he called a Georgetown University student a "slut" because she supported the president's plan to require healthcare providers to include contraception in their coverage.

The boycott has left his show awash in public service announcements, Ad Council campaigns and messages from non-profit groups -- few of which carry any revenue at all. Even some of those free advertisers want out: The American Heart Association has asked for its ads to be pulled.

We asked Nielsen to calculate how much ad money is spent on Limbaugh's show. The audience ratings and adspend monitor doesn't measure show-level spending, but it was able to tell us how much money each advertiser spent on radio overall last year: $363 million.

That overall universe is now being rearranged into other radio stations and other media.

It is not known how big a slice Limbaugh takes of the total $363 million universe, but it is a large one: He has the biggest audience in radio (15 million people per week). Revenues from that must cover the eight-year, $400 million contract he signed in 2008.

UPDATE: Limbaugh told his listeners: "Everything is fine on the business side. Everything's cool. There is not a thing to worry about."

A company-by-company breakdown of what Rush Limbaugh's advertisers spent on radio in 2011.

Note: The green highlight on Ascension Health, Daughters of Charity Health Systems and Prevea Health Services indicates only one of these advertises under the "St. Vincents" name on the show. It is not known which one. Their spending is tiny, regardless.

Looks like somebody stayed up a little too late Super Tuesday.

Fox's Washington correspondent, Doug Luzader, was caught asleep on air during his appearance on Austin Fox O&O KTBC Wednesday morning.

Anchor Joe Bickett tried waking him to no avail.

"Hello Doug...Hi Doug...I guess not."

Our guess is that Luzader is about to become a viral sensation.

YouTube user Duffy1025, who posted the clip online, claims Luzader direct messaged him via Twitter claiming technical difficulties.

"He actually direct messaged me and told me his earpiece was dead and if you look closely enough you can see his eyes blinking."

We don't see it.

We get mic problems, but wouldn't someone awake appear slightly more animated? We call bluff.

Invisible Children Respond To #StopKony Viral Video Criticisms

Kony

Yesterday, we showed you this viral video about stopping Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony that received over four million hits on YouTube in less than 24 hours.

Today, the 30-minute video now has well over 36 million hits. And while it boasts "likes" it also has 31,328 "dislikes."

Despite being backed and tweeted about by celebrities ranging from Oprah WInfrey to Kristen Bell, Invisible Children, the non-profit group who created the video, have been receiving major backlash since its release.

After watching the film, Grant Oyston, a political science student at Acadia University in Canada, looked into Invisible Children's finances online and discovered that of the organization’s $8.6 million 2011 budget, over 68 percent of that was spent on salaries, travel, transportation and film production.

Oyston even went as far as to set up a site called Visible Children, that is now garnering so much press of its own that the college student posted this message:

"Please do not email me except to provide alternative causes, or with media requests, as I am no longer able to read emails (which I’m receiving at a pace too rapid to keep up with)."

Oyston also posted Invisible Children's recent response to his and other people's criticisms.

The organization, which says they are as transparent as possible, then posted this chart explaining the breakdown of their expenses for all the world to see.

Invisible Children

The group went on to explain:

"Invisible Children's financial statements are online for everyone to see. Financial statements from the last 5 years, including our 990, are available at invisiblechildren.com/financials. The organization spent 80.46% on our programs that further our three fold mission, 16.24% on administration and management costs and 3.22% on direct fundraising in FY2011. Invisible Children is independently audited every year and in full compliance with our 501 c 3 status."

But finances aren't critics' only concern.

Everything from the group's marketing tactics and support for military intervention to supposedly exaggerating the situation in Uganda are currently in question.

In 2011, Foreign Affairs magazine wrote:

"In their campaigns, such organizations have manipulated facts for strategic purposes, exaggerating the scale of LRA abductions and murders and emphasizing the LRA's use of innocent children as soldiers, and portraying Kony -- a brutal man, to be sure -- as uniquely awful, a Kurtz-like embodiment of evil. They rarely refer to the Ugandan atrocities or those of Sudan's People's Liberation Army, such as attacks against civilians or looting of civilian homes and businesses, or the complicated regional politics fueling the conflict."

But Invisible Children are not backing down on their cause. Read the organization's full rebuttal against their haters HERE.

A Fascinating Interview With Badass Adventurer Bear Grylls

Bear Grylls eats a fish

From summiting Mt. Everest to swimming with saltwater crocodiles in Australia, there are few challenges that English adventurer Bear Grylls isn't prepared to tackle.

The star of the Discovery Channel's hit reality show "Man vs. Wild" took some heat back in 2008 for supposedly staying in motels during the taping of the first series, but has since become somewhat of an Internet sensation for answering questions about his wild adventures in a popular AMA thread on Reddit.

Grylls recorded most of his responses on video, which were then uploaded to a site called The Adrenalist.

He never goes into the wild without a knife, lighter and a picture of his family

"I always take one of our Bear Grylls knives. I always keep a FireSteel on me so I can get a fire going, and I also take a little laminated picture of my family that I keep tucked in the sole of my shoe for when i'm missing home."

Source: The Adrenalist

He trains 40 minutes a day, six times a week to stay in shape for the show

"I train pretty hard when I'm back home. I consider it part of my job; I need to be fit for my work out there. But I don't go crazy. I train 40 minutes a day, six times a week. A mix of circuits and running and yoga and a lot of flexibility stuff. I'm trying to stay injury-free and look after myself. Train hard, get out there, work hard, and then play hard at the end of it."

Source: The Adrenalist

Sometimes a situation feels too dangerous to continue

"To be honest sometimes I have definitely felt nervous about going on (especially if one of us has had a particularly close call — which has happened quite a bit!), but I have learned that it is fine to feel like that —you gotta then put your head down and keep going — and that attitude has helped me so often."

Beauty Breakdown: How Jennifer Aniston Spends $141,037 On Her Red Carpet Regimen

Jennifer Aniston

In the 90s, Jennifer Aniston sparked a trend with her "Rachel" haircut based on her "Friends" character's perfectly layered 'do.

Now, eight years after her hit NBC sitcom went off the air, Aniston is the enviable, glowing face of how good age 43 can look.

Even under the frightening microscope that is high definition technology, Aniston manages to still resemble the "Picture Perfect" girl-next-door.

So how does she do it?

Just a $141,037/year beauty regimen.

Total Beauty added up Aniston's health routine based off products and treatments the actress has previously told the press she does to retain her youthful appearance. Then, our pals at Beauty High broke it down by body part and feature.

Between literally lasering her face off (see slide number seven) and keeping a yoga instructor on hand at all times, Aniston's regimen costs more than just a pretty penny.

Spray Tan: $45.

After the California girl said she's spent too many years in the sun, she now visits Ibiza Tanning Salon in West Hollywood—where an airbrush tan runs for $45.

Eyebrow Shaping: $80/visit.

Aniston visits Beverly Hills eyebrow guru Anastasia Soare to shape her brows.

While the first session with Anastasia costs a whopping $120, Aniston is a recurring client so she probably only spends about $80 per visit.

Diet: $685/week.

Aniston works with dietician Carrie Wiatt, RD. A consultation with Wiatt will set you back $300 and one week of the dietician's pre-made meals cost $385.

'Game Change' Gives HBO Best Ratings For An Original Movie In 8 Years

Game-Change-HBO

Did "Game Change" give HBO a big boost with its premiere Saturday night? You betcha!

Despite vows from John McCain and other right-leaning partisans stating that they would not watch the McCain-Palin campaign biopic, "Game Change" became the most-watched original film for HBO in nearly eight years.

The initial 9 p.m. airing of the movie drew 2.1 million total viewers—the highest since May 2004's "Something the Lord Made."

"Game Change" amassed 3.6 million viewers over the four airings of the weekend.

The biopic -- which features Ed Harris as McCain and Julianne Moore as Palin, and is based on the John Heilemann/Mark Halperin book of the same name -- drew more than its share of detractors before it even aired.

Last month, a number of current and former Palin aides derided the movie's portrayal of the former vice presidential candidate as "sick" and inaccurate.

McCain, meanwhile, declared that it'll be "a cold day in Gila Bend, Arizona" before he watches the film.

10 Actors Who Have Drastically Altered Their Appearances For Film Roles

Jonah-Hill-21-Jumpstreet-Weight-Loss

The new "21 Jump Street" is right around the corner, folks!

In honor of the film and Jonah Hill's dramatic 40-pound weight loss to play Officer Schmidt, we've collected a list of some of the most dramatic physical changes actors have ever made for a movie role.

Stars are known to transform their bodies for movies. Tom Hanks lost weight and grew a beard for "Cast Away," rapper 50 Cent lost weight recently to a play a football player with cancer in "Things Fall Apart," and Matt Damon has gained and lost weight several times for "Courage Under Fire," "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and the "Bourne" series.

But some of the actors on this list have taken their changes to new heights.

So before you check out Hill and co-star Channing Tatum take on Johnny Depp's territory in "Jump Street," check out the celebs who taught Hill how to do the ultimate film preparation.

Ryan Reynolds

"Blade: Trinity" is probably not the most dignified movie to prove acting credibility but Ryan Reynolds disagrees.

The "Green Lantern" and "The Proposal" actor obsessively trained to look like a character straight from a graphic novel- eight pack and all.

He would eat close to ten small meals and train for up to and over three hours a day to get the proper body to play vampire hunter Hannibal King.

Natalie Portman

To be fair, Natalie Portman has always had a slender frame.

But that makes her weight change in the ballet-paranoia thriller "Black Swan" that much more dramatic.

Portman lost over 20 pounds to play ballet dancer Nina Sayers and trained with co-star Mila Kunis for six months to get the ballet numbers precise.

The actress worked out five hours a day with cross-training and swimming as well as ballet.

Christian Bale

In 2004, Christian Bale appeared in the psychological thriller "The Machinist." The film was about insomniac machine worker Trevor Reznik who becomes increasingly paranoid that someone is trying to drive him insane.

For the role, Bale lost around 63 pounds.

But only a year later, Bale appeared in "Batman Begins" looking back to his old self and more.

The actor gained back all the weight he lost for "The Machinist" and added on another 30 pounds to play the beefy Bruce Wayne.

The acclaimed director's family announced they will be starring in a new reality show on the E! network entitled "Mrs. Eastwood & Company" and is scheduled for a May premiere.

The new show will follow Eastwood's wife Dina, their two daughters and Dina's all-male South African music troupe "Overtone."

While some may think it's crazy for the director of hit films "Mystic River" and "Million Dollar Baby" to allow a camera crew follow his family around like a Kardashian or Lohan, Eastwood himself probably won't be featured as much as the rest of his clan.
