Dr. Dre's ex-fiancée calls Dre's apology about alleged assault 'not sincere' and 'nothing more than a PR statement'

Dr. Dre's ex-fiancée Michel'le, the singer who says she was beaten by Dre during their relationship, isn't buying into the public apology he made recently to "the women I've hurt."

Dre and Michel'le were together for six years and have a son.

"I don't really think it's a sincere apology," Michel'le told BBC. "I didn't ask for a public apology, and I think if he is going to apologize, he should do it individually."

She added, "Treat us like we have names."

Many women have publicly addressed the rapper's alleged violence toward them over the years. Most recently Dee Barnes, a former radio host who says she was attacked by Dre in the '90s, spoke out against that incident not being included in "Straight Outta Compton," a biopic about Dre's former rap group N.W.A.

Barnes says she was beaten by Dre on the floor of the woman's bathroom in a Los Angeles nightclub.

A similar scene was included in an early script for "Straight Outta Compton," but it was cut because directors "couldn't fit everything into the movie."

Dre released the apology just after the film hit theaters.

"I've been married for 19 years and every day I'm working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way," the music mogul told The New York Times. "I'm doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again. I apologize to the women I've hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives."

But Michel'le calls his statement nothing more than "good PR at the moment."

"He's selling a movie," she said.

According to Michel'le, the alleged violence against her lasted five or six years and began to significantly affect her career. "I had to cover two or three black eyes for my videos," she said. "One of the makeup ladies said, 'You've got to stop letting him beat you.'"

She also detailed specific incidents of violence, including a time, she said, he beat her because she didn't cook enough chicken.

"One night I baked him chicken and I didn't make enough," she said. "He beat me because I didn't have another piece of chicken. It became that kind of relationship. I would move out for three or four months and come back. We just had a cycle."

According to BBC, 24 years have passed since Dre and Michel'le were together, but she still thinks about the alleged violence often. "I don't want this new generation to think that it's OK," she said. "I've never stopped talking about it. That's what's so funny about this coming up now."

Iris Apfel

Iris Barrel Apfel is someone who dresses to impress.

Never one to follow trends, her eclectic style is a mix of high-end, low-end, and vintage duds.

A darling of the fashion set for years, her appeal has officially gone mainstream, thanks to an early aughts museum exhibit, a recent documentary, and modeling gigs with fashion brand Kate Spade, accessories designer Alexis Bittar, and cosmetics juggernaut MAC.

By marching to the beat of her own drum, the former interior designer and textiles importer has become, as she puts it, "a 93-year-old cover girl."

Earlier this spring, a documentary on her life, "Iris," let fans meet the woman behind those signature giant glasses, and audiences were enchanted, as was one Kanye West (more on that below).

Apfel was born in Astoria, Queens, on August 29, 1921. Her mother was a lawyer and her father was a fashion boutique owner. As a child, she delighted in styling store windows and going on design studio visits with her father.

Apfel studied fine arts at Wisconsin University and New York University. After working as a correspondent for Women's Wear Daily, she apprenticed for an interior designer and later stepped out on her own as a decorator and textiles importer.

She married Carl Apfel — who celebrates his 100th birthday in the film — in 1948 and started Old World Weavers, their design business that sourced and created unique textiles.

Kelly Osbourne hasn't totally closed the door on E!'s "Fashion Police." It's more like she closed the door on someone who's on "Fashion Police."

When TheWrap asked if she would ever consider returning to the series, the rock star daughter offered, “If certain people weren’t there.”

new fashion police hosts E.JPGWhat could she mean? Does she have something against returning co-host Brad Goreski?

“Brad is one of the most incredible people in fashion, he is funny as f---,” Osbourne said backstage during the 4th Annual NYX FACE Awards in L.A.

Could Joan Rivers' daughter have rubbed Osbourne the wrong way?

“I am so happy for Melissa [Rivers] that she is filling that seat," Osbourne said of Rivers' return to the show after she decided to leave the runway style show and "try new things."

That leaves Giulana Rancic, who returns to the show after a major on-air incident over supposed "racist" comments made about Zendaya's dreadlocks during the Oscars.

Through process of elimination, it seems like Osbourne is angry with Rancic.

“I will never admit to liking Giuliana, because I don’t. I don’t think she’s a good person and I think she’s a liar,” Osbourne told the site.

Giuliana Rancic Kelly OsbourneWell, it doesn't look like Osbourne will be back on that panel anytime soon. She should really forvive and forget. After all, she was considered racist very recently when she made a misguided comment in response to Donald Trump's Mexican immigration statements.

The new "Fashion Police" debuts Monday, August 31 at 9 p.m. on E! with its 2015 MTV Video Music Awards special.

The Burning Man bugs are gone — here's why they probably disappeared

$

Burning ManThe internet was a buzz last week with news that two different types of smelly, biting bugs had infested the land where the annual Burning Man festival is set to take place starting August 30.

While the pesky pest report initially came from the official Burning Man blog last Wednesday, the same blog was quick to dismiss the severity of the rumors on Thursday in a post titled "Don't Believe The Buzz."

By Friday, the blog claimed: "The bugs are gone. not every last stinking one of them, but pretty much. The swarms have dried up and blown away. People are working unmolested. Nature has run its course."

So what's the real story? It appears there was a severe infestation when organizers first arrived on the playa (as the desert land is called), with bugs "everywhere" that "bite, crawl all over you, and get up and in you," according to official first reports.

But by the weekend, the bugs had apparently subsided.

The Burning Man blog wrote a new post on Saturday easing the anxieties of the 70,000 future festival-goers, assuring them that "the billion wood-boring beetles that descended on the Man’s legs at Man Base have evidently been exterminated":

Burning Man will not be brought to you by Citronella and DEET this year. Behind us are the horrific fear-saturated nights of swarming green beetles, clouds of fluttering moths, biting flying ants, stinging noseeums and locusts so thick we had to don Hazmat suits and run in sheer terror from container to container to avoid being eaten alive.

So what happened to the bugs? It could have been a few things...

We aren’t sure if it was the water trucks spraying vegan and gluten-free Malathion that did the trick. Or it may have been the initial deployment of our BRC Drone Bug Zappers that took out the first wave of stink bugs on Wednesday. They rose from the Depot, all flying in formation into the incoming swarms trillions thick, zapping blue and littering the playa with millions of twitching sizzling bug corpses. Some attribute our victory to Ranger Rico and his Roughnecks who were equipped with armor exoskeletons and flamethrowers that allowed them to capture the Brain Bug. We may never know, but somehow we prevailed. We witnessed, persevered and we survived.

burning man Or, as entomologist and insect photographer Alex Wild explained to Gizmodo last week during the outbreak: "Desert species are prone to boom/bust cycles. [They] may just be passing through."

'American Ultra' screenwriter goes on Twitter rant after movie bombs at the box office

American Ultra Alan Markfield

“American Ultra” screenwriter Max Landis (“Chronicle”) tweeted out some thoughts on the movie business to his 44,500 plus followers over the weekend after seeing the awful opening the film had at the box office this weekend.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, the stoner comedy/actioner (directed by “Project X” director Nima Nourizadeh) took in only $5.5 million at over 2,700 screens. Landis, son of legendary director John Landis (“Animal House,” “The Blues Brothers”), asked openly on Twitter why films that weren’t as well received by critics than “American Ultra” did better this weekend?

Here are a few of his tweets:

Landis’ conclusion is this:

Max Landis Jason MerrittThis is nothing new to the recent movie landscape. Even the movies that have done well so far this year that weren’t from a franchise (most recently “Straight Outta Compton”) had a built-in audience. Granted, N.W.A.’s last album came out in the early 1990s, but their existing members went on to make landmark work in the decades that followed which kept interest in the group.

Landis ends his rant this way:

Landis may fair better with the next original screenplay he wrote, "Mr. Right." The dark romantic comedy stars Anna Kendrick who falls for “Mr. Right” played by Sam Rockwell. The only problem, he’s a hitman on the run from cartels.

The film will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

This upcoming app will let you compete with your friends to guess the plot twists on TV shows

$

House of cardsThere is a moment of undeniable victory when you guess the next plot twist of a TV show. And it’s made even sweeter when you were the only one of your friends to put two and two together.

Now an upcoming app called Plot Guru is trying to bottle that feeling and serve it to you for all your favorite Netflix titles.

The app will make watching a show with your friends an ongoing contest of “who can guess the twist.”

Here’s how it works.

You get your friends together to watch a show — Plot Guru is launching with 20 of the most popular shows on Netflix. The app then syncs with the episode you watch on Netflix and sends everyone questions while the episode is playing. At the end of every episode, every player is ranked and you can see who is the master of knowing Hollywood formulas.

Screen Shot 2015 08 24 at 2.55.10 PM

Of course there is also a single-player mode if you and your friends aren’t watching the same time. And the scores will be shareable via social media.

The origin story of the app traces its roots back to Switzerland, where creator Justin Key was working as a financial services consultant. He and his wife would have Swiss friends over every week to watch American TV. They would constantly debate what would happen next, so they decided to make a game out of it.

Being the financial consultant he was, key created an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of everyone's predictions, and eventually added a scoring algorithm to rank each player.

Now, like fantasy baseball before it, this delightfully nerdy pastime is getting the truly digital treatment.

At present, the Plot Guru app is functional but still has yet to be released, with the team running playtests to get it ready for launch. If you join the early-signup list at Plot Guru’s website, you will get every in-app purchase for free — forever — when the app is released.

Jon Stewart's epic betrayal of John Cena shocked the WWE universe

Recently retired "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart sent shock waves through the WWE fanbase on Sunday night when he betrayed WWE United States Champion John Cena in a move that cost the wrestler his championship. Stewart was the official host of the Summerslam pay-per-view event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Stewart interfered during the "Title for Title" match between Cena and defending WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. Folding chair in hand, Stewart entered the ring presumably to help Cena. However he shocked everyone when he attacked Cena with the folding chair, allowing Rollins to get the win.

Stewart has performed on WWE broadcasts as recently as last March when he was in a feud with Rollins, who also appeared on the "Daily Show." We'll have to tune into "Monday Night Raw" to see if Stewart offers an explanation for his betrayal of Cena.

Here's why Quentin Tarantino isn't worried about the influx of franchise films

$

Quentin Tarantino

With the glut of superhero and franchise films that hit theaters every year, there's a worry that they're starting tolook lifeless or identical. And from a business perspective, the industry's reliance on big tentpole films rather than mid-range films is making even Steven Spielberg and George Lucas worry. But Quentin Tarantino isn't bothered.

"That’s been going on since I was born," Tarantino told Vulture, which he spoke to for New York magazine's fall preview issue. "You can talk about Transformers now, but you could talk about the Planet of the Apes movies and James Bond when I was a little kid — and I couldn’t wait to see those."

Worries about an over-reliance on tentpoles have indeed been around for a long time. They surfaced most recently when Josh Trank's "Fantastic Four" crashed and burned, making just $25.7 million on its opening weekend on a $130 million budget, received brutal reviews, and threatened the end of a potential franchise for Fox before it even started.

The problem is that, because a franchise film can comprise a large percentage of a film studio's budget, if a couple of movies fail, they can theoretically ruin a studio — or at least the careers of people running them. That's why they're called "tentpole" films. For example, former Disney Studios chairman resigned in 2013 following the disastrous performance of "John Carter" at box office.

Spielberg and Lucas sounded the alarm soon afterwards. At a panel at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, they warned against studio's over-reliance on tentpoles, and said that these movies are being made at the expense of smaller films.

“There’s eventually going to be a big meltdown,” Spielberg said. “There’s going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen of these mega-budgeted movies go crashing into the ground and that’s going to change the paradigm again.”

Tarantino thinks the worry is overblown, even though his own upcoming movie, "The Hateful Eight," has a $44 million budget, less than half of the $100 million budget that his previous movie, "Django Unchained," had. (To be fair, "Eight" appears to be more modest in scale than "Django.")

"I don’t know why Spielberg and Lucas would be complaining about movies like that," Tarantino told Vulture. "They don’t have to direct them."

Quentin Tarantino Steven Spielberg"The Hateful Eight" will get a limited release on December 25 on screens that support the film's 70mm film format, followed by a nationwide release on January 8.

Tarantino isn't convinced that blockbusters are crowding out better movies, either. To him, the argument is recycled from the 1970s and '90s. In fact, he thinks the worst movies Hollywood produces now are better than the worst movies studios produced in the past decades. If anything, he wishes superhero movies were this good years ago.

"I’ve been reading comic books since I was a kid, and I’ve had my own Marvel Universe obsessions for years," he said to Vulture. "So I don’t really have a problem with the whole superhero thing right now, except I wish I didn’t have to wait until my 50s for this to be the dominant genre. Back in the ’80s, when movies sucked — I saw more movies then than I’d ever seen in my life, and the Hollywood bottom-line product was the worst it had been since the ’50s — that would have been a great time."

The director would rather continue to write original scripts than join a franchise himself anytime soon, though. He only said he used to be interested in directing "Scream," which Wes Craven ended up making in 1996 and which Tarantino "didn't care for."

The James Bond franchise was on Tarantino's wishlist as well, when he was basking in the success of "Pulp Fiction." He thinks his approach would have subverted the franchise.

"I tried to get the rights to Casino Royale away from the Broccolis [the family that oversees production on James Bond adaptations], but that didn't happen," he said to Vulture. "That wouldn't have been just throwing my hat in the franchise ring; that would have been subversion on a massive level, if I could have subverted Bond."

Tarantino also said that he "learned a lesson" with "Grindhouse," his double-feature of exploitation horror films from 2007. He directed "Death Proof," which was screened back-to-back with Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror." The movies found only a niche audience, and grossed only $25 million.

"Robert Rodriguez and I had gotten used to going our own way, on these weird roads, and having the audience come along," Tarantino said to Vulture. "We’d started thinking they’d go wherever we wanted. With Grindhouse, that proved not to be the case. It was still worth doing, but it would have been better if we weren’t caught so unaware by how uninterested people were."

I rarely recommend buying the newest version of sports games every year — but this year's 'Madden' is worth it

$
0
0

It's an age-old tale in the world of sports video games: Every year we get a new version of an old game that makes small changes from the previous year to get less fake and closer to the actual game.

One of the biggest sports games on the planet is undoubtedly EA Sports' annual "Madden" offering. I've been playing "Madden NFL 16" for a few days now, the latest of the bunch, and for once I have to admit that everyone who is into sports games should pick this up.

I don't normally say this about sports video games.

Usually the changes from year to year are so incremental that it's hard to see a huge reason to upgrade. You can usually get away with buying a new version every two or three years, especially since many of the games started allowing players to create and share rosters seamlessly online. For me personally, updated rosters used to be the biggest reason I would update year to year. That concern is now, mostly, gone.

A long-awaited overhaul

"Madden NFL 16" is different than its previous iterations because, despite all the new heralded features, the main change is an overhaul to the menu screens and out-of-game experience. And that has been the single most frustrating thing about "Madden" games over the past five years or so.

This upgrade alone is so good that it should convince everyone to buy it.

Generally the menus are clunky, slow, and hard to get around. And year after year we've had to deal with the same thing, but EA has finally revamped them and they look great.

Here are the main menus in action:

Here's the main menu for Connected Franchise mode:

It may seem like a small change, but it's actually a huge step in user functionality.

This change alone is why I suggest all "Madden" lovers update to this version of the game and buy "Madden 16." The experience feels streamlined, attractive, easy to use, and simple to understand and navigate. Finally!

On the field

What most people want to know, of course, is what to expect on the field. That is where the action is after all. And in "Madden NFL 16," it's as great as always. But don't expect any groundbreaking improvements.

When the "Madden" games launched on next generation consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4 a couple of years ago, the overhaul was massive. Physics were reimagined, player models became incredibly lifelike, and gameplay became much more nuanced.

This year's "Madden" looks a lot like last year's game, and that's OK. It's gorgeous.

The franchise took huge strides when it moved to the latest consoles. It's a beautiful game that really makes you feel like you're there. If you watch a lot of NFL football, as I do, it's always daunting to go back to these newer "Madden" games after awhile and remember again how close to reality they are getting aesthetically.

As with each year, the physics of "Madden 16" feel just slightly more organic than the previous year. This especially comes into play during big hits, gang tackles, and Cornerback and Wide Receiver duels.

The biggest changes you're going to see on the field are in presentation.

For example, introduction of the QB when he first walks onto the field now features an augmented reality kind of feel we're used to seeing from Fox Sports NFL broadcasts:

But even more noticeably, it's the in-game stats like this that really change the experience:

Madden stats

I love this change. I am obsessed with in-game statistics while I'm playing simulation sports games, and often find myself so grateful when the game weaves them in seamlessly. Usually you have to wait awhile for another stat to come up, mostly because these games are often trying to mimic the broadcast style. When you're watching an NFL game on television, you aren't getting constantly updated on stats throughout. They pick their spots.

"Madden 16" has foregone that for an experience which feeds you in-game stats all the time. It's awesome.

And you'll see it throughout. That little marker and arrow shows up all the time. It will tell you a quarterback's completion percentage, how many yards a running back has, how many tackles a linebacker has so far, and everything in between. It really enriches the experience on the field and helps the story of the game extend out and become more interesting than who wins and who loses.

More control

Another mostly new feature is receiver and defensive back controls. You could always control the actual catch of the ball, and the defense of a receiver on a ball, but this year the controls are made simpler and a bigger part of the game.

I love the new receiver controls. And they serve the purpose of giving you more control over the game which, in turn, brings it closer and closer to an actual game experience.

Once the quarterback throws the ball you can immediately tell the receiver to catch it in a certain way. You can choose to aggressively try to catch it so the defender can't get it, catch it in a way that allows you to run afterwards, or safely catch it to minimize risk.

This control is awesome and adds another layer of fun to the game.

catch icon

You can also take more control over the defensive back by switching to the player covering a receiver and trying to snatch it away. Given that I tend to take less control on defense rather than more, this is not my thing. But I can see how others would like it. Also, this feature is mostly only new in presentation, as previous "Madden" game's have had it before in a similar form.

Screenshot 2015 08 24 16.13.20

Modes and Menus

For the most part you can expect the same experiences in "Madden NFL 16" as past games. The one major addition is a "Draft Champions" mode which is kind of a riff on fantasy football. You go through multiple rounds of re-drafting the NFL to make your own fantasy team. Then you take them onto the field to compete against the CPU or other players.

EA Sports says the mode is specifically designed to be quick and repeatable.

And I get that: It seems like a good way to keep people engaged in the game even when it's not football season. I have yet to try this feature, but it sounds like a solid edition and more fun than Madden Ultimate Team — a classic mode that I've never been particularly fond of.

The skills trainer is way better this year, benefiting from the organization that the new menu system brings to the whole game. It's just easier to pinpoint the specific aspects you want to improve on and quickly train. "Madden" is hard, so this is important.

Screenshot 2015 08 24 16.41.55

The big season mode, dubbed "Connected Franchise," is largely the same, although the menus, again, are so much more streamlined this year.

It keeps you focused on getting to the next game and playing football instead of toiling in the muck of managing a team, which is a much less fun aspect of the game. That stuff's all there, it's just not front and center.

Worth your money

New iterations of sports games change so little usually that buying every single game year to year isn't worth unless you're a superfan. "Madden NFL 16" is just one of those sports games that you should get because it fixes a lot of previous problems, and it's much more fun to play as a result of that.

"Madden NFL 16" comes out August 25th for Xbox One and PS4.

Donald Trump launches new scathing attack against Megyn Kelly, shares another 'bimbo' insult against her

Real-estate developer Donald Trump is back to trashing Fox News host Megyn Kelly, the day she returned from her vacation after the Republican presidential candidate's high-profile feud with her.

In a series of tweets late Monday night, Trump blasted Kelly's performance on her show, "The Kelly File," and promoted tweets calling her a "bimbo" and comparing her looks to those of an older female TV host, Nancy Grace:

The Trump attacks are notable because he and the network had struck a public cease-fire earlier in the month. Kelly moderated the first prime-time Republican presidential debate and asked Trump a series of questions Trump described as unfair, including one about derogatory comments he has made toward women.

The developer lashed out at Kelly after the debate. On Twitter, he promoted another tweet calling the host a "bimbo," and in a series of interviews blasting her, he made a particularly controversial comment that many interpreted as a sexist reference to menstruation.

"You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her — wherever," Trump said of Kelly during the debate. (Trump later insisted he meant "nose" or "ears"; "Only a deviant would think anything else," he added.)

Relations between Trump, who polls show is the Republican front-runner, and Fox, which has an outsize influence among GOP voters, continued to publicly deteriorate. Kelly even reportedly received death threats from Trump's supporters. Eventually, Fox News chief Roger Ailes and Trump had a "blunt" conversation that they said resolved their differences.

But Trump is clearly not done criticizing and mocking Kelly:

rebooted tv shows

Hollywood isn't just looking to remake movies for the small screen; it's desperately looking for TV shows that might have a second life.

Recently, Fox added "Prison Break" to the growing list of shows content creators are looking to bring back. It joins shows like "Twin Peaks," "Heroes," "Charmed," and "Married With Children" in the pipeline back to TV.

But what shows are viewers really excited about?

Amobee Brand Intelligence rounded up the data from more than 600,000 websites (including mobile) and social media to come up with a list of what fans are most buzzing about.

Here are the 10 most talked-about TV reboots, remakes, and returns:

10. "Prison Break" (Fox)

"Prison Break's" original creator Paul Scheuring and stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell have signed on to return for the Fox series. The show will continue after the fourth season and ignore the straight-to-DVD movie.

9. "Powerpuff Girls" (Cartoon Network)

A whole new generation of kids will be exposed to the crime-fighting skills of Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup on Comedy Central's upcoming 2016 reboot of the "Powerpuff Girls." It has a new look and new voices, and "Adventure Time" animator Nick Jennings is set as executive producer.

8. "Xena: Warrior Princess" (NBC)

"Xena: Warrior Princess" can go on even without Lucy Lawless. The original Xena has been denying a reboot is in the works. But NBC president Robert Greenblatt said it's on and Lucy can work behind-the-scenes if she'd like. Strange that her husband, Rob Tapert, is an executive producer.

John Oliver exposed an intriguing link between televangelism and Scientology

David Miscavige

Last week, John Oliver mocked the lax rules that make it incredibly easy to form your own tax-exempt church. He even made his own church — Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption— to prove his point.

Oliver says televangelists have been taking advantage of these laws to establish what are basically predatory businesses: They go on television and make extraordinary promises in exchange for monetary donations. One person featured in Oliver's video died of cancer reportedly after a televangelist said she should pay for the televangelist's program instead of medical treatment.

In the US, the IRS grants churches a wide range of tax exemptions, and its rules defining what constitutes a church are vague and can be interpreted broadly. Between 2009 and 2013, the IRS audited just three churches, according to CBS, which cited the Government Accountability Office.

And who can be credited for the tax rules the IRS has for churches? The Church of Scientology, according to Anthony Ole, the president of Trinity Foundation, an organization that monitors religious fraud. In the early '90s, the IRS granted the Church of Scientology tax-exempt status. Since then, "anybody can call themselves a Church," Ole told CBS.

L. Ron Hubbard incorporated the Church of Scientology in 1953, and it was recognized as a tax-exempt religious organization in 1957. But after a 1967 audit, the Church lost its status.

The Church reportedly responded with a campaign against the IRS. According to The New York Times, the Church and its members filed more than 2,200 lawsuits against the IRS, hired private detectives to "uncover potential vulnerabilities" in the personal lives of IRS officials, and financed an IRS whistle-blowing organization.

Finally, in 1997, the Church paid the IRS $12.5 million as part of a deal that once again gave it tax-exempt status, The New York Times reported at the time.

"The way they determined that Scientology was a religion was to make a deal," Lawrence Wright, the author of "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief," told Salon. "Essentially, Scientology bludgeoned them into this tax exemption, which now denominates them as a religion."

For its part, the Church of Scientology told Business Insider that "the IRS recognized Scientology as a tax-exempt religious and charitable organization because it provided substantive proof on the merits, following a two-year examination, that it was entitled to that recognition."

In "Going Clear," Wright describes the Church of Scientology's teaching method in ways that sound a whole lot like televangelism. Both the Church of Scientology and televangelists use a pay-as-you-go models, where the religious organization offers small morsels of its teachings for money. Those morsels become increasingly expensive with each lesson, according to Wright.

The Church of Scientology, however, disputes the claim that it charges its members more and more money over time. A Church representative told Business Insider that Wright's book was "sloppily researched."

"First, the Church of Scientology should not be compared to the fundraising practices of televangelists. The Church of Scientology does no fundraising in the televangelist manner, so the comparison [is] inaccurate," the Church said in a statement to Business Insider. "Second, due to the unique nature of its ministry, the Church of Scientology has found that a fixed donation system for participating in religious services is the fairest and most practical method of support."

While the Church denies any comparisons to televangelism, the descriptions of its fundraising methods in Wright's critically acclaimed book would make it seem otherwise.

On "Last Week Tonight," Oliver demonstrated the common practice among televangelists of "seeding," where televangelists ask for more money as they correspond with their audience. Oliver began a letter exchange with the televangelist Robert Tilton's organization, which in turn asked for more money with each letter sent.

At first, Tilton asked for $37 — he then asked for more and more money as Oliver communicated with the organization. Oliver sent him a total of $319 before dropping out.

'No Escape' may be intense and horrifying, but it's also tasteless

no escape owen wilson

"No Escape" is a film so hell-bent on giving its audience a nightmarish experience that it pays no mind to its inherently racist premise.

The film follows an American family (headed by Owen Wilson and Lake Bell) as they move from Texas to an anonymous Asian country (it's never explicitly mentioned, but we later find out it's close to Vietnam) and with their two young daughters get caught in the middle of a violent coup. They must do whatever it takes to survive while all the Americans are specifically hunted and killed.

While it does achieve its desired level of intensity, "No Escape" is just another entry in a long line of tone-deaf films that place white Americans in perilous situations while ignoring the humanity of the natives actually affected by the violence. Whitewashing is nothingnew in Hollywood, but that doesn't make it any less problematic.

Every single "other" (or local) on-screen is either a savage inflicting harm on an American, or a corpse. By the end, many are both. None of the natives speak, really, unless the sound of machetes hitting human flesh or a gunshot can be construed as language. The body count here is incredibly high.

no escape owen pierceIt's a horribly ugly film that appears to take great pleasure in its own misery; it has all the bells and whistles of schlock horror, but wrapped around a generic, overly sentimental script. These elements clash throughout and give the film a goofy, inconsistent tone. At one point it literally jumps from a potential rape to a cheesy one-liner.

A geopolitical thriller shouldn't revel so much in its senseless bloodshed. The film plays like a snuff film that just so happens to feature broad strokes of political implications. From the very opening sequence, in which we cut to a classic-horror-style logo after multiple locals are brutally murdered, it's clear the "in-your-face" approach is not a great fit here.

The script only gets more implausible and convenient as it goes along, with Pierce Brosnan playing a character who dips in and out of the film whenever it suits the narrative.

The big action sequences (including the one splayed all over the commercials in which Owen Wilson tosses his children off a roof) are all so ridiculous that they earned genuine laughs from the audience. The decidedly gritty and horrific violence is rendered thematically empty considering the film would never dare do any actual harm to its protagonists.

"No Escape" tries to be a bloody horror film, a geopolitical thriller, and an emotional experience all at once, but fails to strike any sort of meaningful balance between the three and is nothing more than xenophobic propaganda.

Watch the trailer below.

"No Escape" opens in theaters nationwide on Wednesday, August 26.

This year's Burning Man festival has a frightening theme

Burning Man

Burning Man doesn't even start until August 30th, but it's already off to a rocky start.

First, there was the infestation of giant green bugs that, according to Burning Man's official blog, "bite, crawl all over you, and get up and in you."

The bugs have apparently since "dried up and blown away," but in a new blog post from Saturday, festival organizers sarcastically warned that "Bugpocalypse was just a warm up to our possibly most menacing problem. The clowns are waiting with painted smiles to welcome you to Black Rock City."

Burning Man's official art theme this year is "Carnival of Mirrors," hence the imminent scary clown costumes.

scary clownsAccording to the blog post from the weekend, "This is not going to be a good year for clown fearing folks... prepare for Sad Clown Town."

They wander around town even now, shapes in the darkness, ducking behind containers, appearing then disappearing at meetings. They’ve applied their make-up that is becoming caked with alkaline playa dust and is slowly fading each day. Prepare for Sad Clown Town. And beware Plug and Players, the clowns have your number. Locate, Tag, Track and Acculturate. Participate or clowns will eat you. My advice is to befriend a clown as soon as possible upon arrival. They are a hive mind and they can sense your intentions and fear.

...And don’t worry about the bugs. Clowns are far scarier.

clown circus This year's festival will be set up a bit like an old-fashioned carnival, complete with a funhouse at the center that "will contemplate the puzzle of self-consciousness."

At the heart of this disorienting maze, a final passage will reveal a courtyard that surrounds the Burning Man. Photo booths will here record the faces of participants, merging them into a swirling stream that will envelop the entire body of the Man. The brittle mirror and the occulting mask will melt away, and at this point there’ll be no gag, no swag, no souvenir of self; the show will be you.

The "Carnival of Mirrors" theme was first announced on the Burning Man website with this creepy video:

John Cena gives Jon Stewart an 'attitude adjustment' on WWE Monday Night RAW

Cena Stewart 5

The Barclays Center in Brooklyn was in shock Sunday night when former “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart came into the ring during the bout at WWE SummerSlam between World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and United States Champion John Cena and hit Cena with a folding chair, leading to Rollins winning the match and both titles.

SummerSlam 2015 1Stewart, who was the host of SummerSlam, returned to the squared circle on Monday Night RAW the following night to explain himself.

“Apparently I upset some people,” Stewart said to the crowd. Going on to say, “But to those individuals last night who had to comfort their children, children who wanted to know who the little old mean man was and why he would do that I will tell you why.”

Cena Stewart 2Stewart said that he wasn’t helping Seth Rollins win the match but that he couldn’t let John Cena tie wresting hall of famer Ric Flair’s record of being 16-time World Champion.

If Cena won the match against Rollins at SummerSlam he would have reached that mark.

“Because in my mind the champ is Flair,” said Stewart. “Not on my watch. Wasn’t going to happen.”

Following that statement Flair’s trademark “Whooo” chant burst through the speakers and the legendary wrestler came to the ring to the enjoyment of Stewart. The comic was so excited he did a little of Flair’s patented strut.

Stewart Cena 2But when Flair got to the mic, though he was appreciative of Stewart’s actions, he let the comic know that he was rooting for Cena.

“Sooner or later the record will be broken, and I would prefer it would be by someone that I respect,” Flair told Stewart.

Cena Stewart 3Then Cena entered the ring and gave Stewart a tongue-lashing.

Cena Stewart 4Stewart apologized to Cena for his actions and tried to convince Cena that it was an “opportunity” now to win back the belt.

“This is your moment,” Stewart told Cena.

Cena countered by say, “I understand that, so I know you’re going to understand this because right now I’m just going to do what I got to do.”

He then grabbed Stewart and put him across his shoulders and slammed him to the canvas. Known to WWE fans as Cena's “Attitude Adjustment” move.

Several Halloween costume retailers are under fire for selling a Caitlyn Jenner costume.

Based on Jenner's Vanity Fair cover, the costume features a white bodysuit with a "padded top" and sash that reads "Call Me Caitlyn."

While buycostumes.com has pulled the costume, it's still available for $74.99 on sites including wholesalehalloweencostumes.com, spirithalloween.com, and anytimecostumes.com.

You probably won't break any Twitter records when you wear this outfit like Caitlyn did when she first made her account, but you'll be sure to get a few laughs out of your friends and the other guests at the get together."

Here's what anytimecostumes.com recommends you need to "complete the look":

Caitlyn Jenner halloween costume

After news of the costume spread, there has been an intense Twitter backlash:

Spirit Halloween's senior director of marking, Lisa Barr, tried defending the costume in a statement to MSNBC: "At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes. We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

But Addison Vincent, the creator of a Change.org petition asking Spirit Halloween to discontinue sales of the costume, counters: "Do not turn Cailtyn Jenner into a costume. Your profit will only lead to greater transphobia and marginalization of an already at-risk community."

The actual Caitlyn Jenner has yet to respond to the costume or backlash.

Following the shocking turn of events that occurred Barclays Center on Sunday night, retired "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart explained the reason for his betrayal of John Cena at WWE's Summerslam pay-per-view event.

Stewart appeared on "Monday Night Raw" to say that the only reason he interfered with the match — which cost Cena both the WWE World Heavyweight and United States Championships to Seth Rollins — was because he didn't want to see Cena tie the record for most championships ever held in WWE history. The record is currently held by Ric Flair, with 16 to his name.

Cena came to the ring to confront Stewart, who shortly thereafter ended up on the receiving end of Cena's finishing move: the Attitude Adjustment.
