Olivia Wilde perfectly sums up the importance of your 30s

Olivia Wilde Jason Sudeikis

Olivia Wilde is 31 years old, but her philosophy on aging is wise beyond her years.

The "Tron: Legacy" actress, who has a 1-year-old son with fiancé Jason Sudeikis, recently opened up to Elle magazine about getting older, and she perfectly summed up how to best use different decades in life:

I find that most of the women that I really look up to, both women I know personally and women I admire from afar, are in their forties. So now, my thirties seem like this great opportunity to develop the experience and wisdom that will allow me to have an even greater decade in my forties. Thirties feel like a fertile ground. The twenties are for f------ up, that's what you're supposed to do, and your thirties are for using the knowledge you gained from said f------ up to make something, to put that experience toward something useful. And then I think your forties are an opportunity to enjoy what you've worked for.

At age 27, Wilde divorced her husband of eight years, photographer-filmmaker Tao Ruspoli.

Despite starring on hit Fox show "House M.D." at the time, it wasn't until after her divorce that Wilde says she "felt like I finally started my career."

Olivia Wilde Tao RuspoliSince then, the actress has starred in movies such as "Rush" and produced passion projects like "Drinking Buddies." She continued to Elle about leaving her 20s and entering her 30s:

At the end of your twenties, you realize you are inherently flawed, and that's great, and that's what makes you dynamic. For me, personally, it was around 27 when that kind of return to self took place, of living for myself, not living to keep up expectations. You know, I think you go from living for your parents to your peers, maybe back to your parents, maybe to your employer—You go through all these stages of living for other people, and I think at 30 you say, it's my life and I live it for me.

Oshea Jackson Jaimie Trueblood.JPGO'Shea Jackson Jr., 24, is receiving rave reviews for playing Ice Cube in the hit N.W.A. biopic "Straight Outta Compton."

You could say he was born to play the role, as he's the real-life son of N.W.A. member Ice Cube, whose real name is O’Shea Jackson. But the part wasn’t handed to him.

ice cube o'shea jacksonTo earn the role, Jackson went through a grueling two-year process that included constant auditions and working with three different acting coaches.

"It's all these things to build confidence within me," Jackson told Entertainment Weekly about the process.

And though Cube was supportive of this son's growth, as a producer on the film he had to find the best actor to play himself.

"If we found a better Cube, then we had to go with the best man for the job," Cube told People. "That's how acting and movie shoots work. So I couldn't give it to him — and I wouldn't if I could because that's easy."

Actors and rappers also auditioned for the role, with a short list coming down to Jackson and two others gunning for the Cube role, Jackson told People.

But the final decision didn’t come down to who had the look or tone of Cube, but to who had the best rapping skills.Straight Outta Compton Jaimie Trueblood Oscar finalThe actors chosen to play the members of N.W.A. had to also be able to convincingly perform the classic songs from the group's debut album, "Straight Outta Compton." There would be no dubbing of voices for the songs featured in the movie — they would have to rap just like the legends they were portraying.

It was Jackson's prowess on the mic that inevitably landed him the role.

Ultimately, Jackson perfectly portrayed his dad in the movie. Many who have seen the film have been blown away by Jackson's performance. Cinema Blend writes that it's Jackson's "uncanny ability to embody his father, from his presence to his quirks, that gives the film its oomph."

Ice Cube O'Shea Jackson Jr Straight Outta ComptonAfter viewing the final cut of the film, Jackson got his father's seal of approval.

"As a parent, you always are proud of the moments when you kid steps up," Cube told Tribune News. "So I'm forever grateful that he stepped up to this challenge and portrayed me in the movie. I couldn't picture anyone else doing it. I was totally engulfed watching him perform. See, I've never been to an N.W.A. concert — I've done an N.W.A. concert, but never had the chance as an audience member to experience it, and I was like, 'Pretty powerful!'"

The 10 biggest winners and losers of the summer movie season

$

avengers age of ultron

Before we say goodbye to summer, it’s time to look back on how the movie business did the last few months.

Overall, Hollywood had an incredible summer at the multiplex with numerous record-breaking releases — incidentally coming from the same studio. But there were also some major disappointments.

So let’s look back at the movies, people, and studios that make up the winners and losers of this summer movie season.

SEE ALSO: Meet the new young Hollywood — 30 stars under 30 whose careers are blowing up

WINNER: Universal

No one saw this coming. Without a superhero franchise on its summer slate, few could imagine Universal would be at the top of the heap at the global box office.

But it turned out what the studio had this summer were titles that had stories with built-in mass appeal. Thanks to the sensational performances of "Furious 7," "Jurassic World," and "Minions," to name a few, Universal has made more than $5.52 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the highest grossing year ever for a studio.

LOSER: Josh Trank

It's hard to find anyone in Hollywood who lost more over the summer than filmmaker Josh Trank. At one time he was the new "it" director, with the "Fantastic Four" reboot by 20th Century Fox coming out and prepping to direct one of the "Star Wars" anthology projects.

But following reports of Trank’s alleged erratic behavior on the set of "Four," Trank left the "Star Wars" film. Now with "Four" bombing at the box office and Trank’s Twitter response to the critics' reaction, the 31-year-old is at a crossroads.

WINNER: "Straight Outta Compton"

After years of teasing, a biopic on the legendary rap group N.W.A was finally released over the summer, and it turned out a few people wanted to see it.

Actually, a lot of people. The film had the highest-grossing opening weekend for a music biopic of all time with $60 million. And yes, it's another successful release by Universal this summer.

'Straight Outta Compton' is gunning for an Oscar nomination — but it’s not going to be easy

Straight Outta Compton Jaimie Trueblood Oscar 2.JPG

The N.W.A. biopic “Straight Outta Compton” is shaping up to be this year’s award season underdog story.

The two-and-a-half hour R-rated drama about the history of the members behind one of rap music’s most iconic groups has already exceeded the expectations of most in Hollywood with a historic opening weekend in theaters.

As of Monday, the film took in an estimated $60.5 million in the US over the weekend, making it easily the biggest domestic opening weekend ever for a music biopic.

But now it sounds like Universal is gunning for the ultimate prize.

GoldDerby.com’s Tom O’Neil has confirmed to Business Insider that the studio has already begun their Oscar push for the film as they had a screening for Academy voters in Beverly Hills on Saturday.

“The theater was packed with 700 people who gave the film a hearty response,” O’Neil emailed to BI.

Most studios wait to release their award season hopefuls until September or October at the earliest as it can use the prominent fall film festivals like Telluride, Venice, Toronto, and New York film festivals to garner buzz, but it looks like the incredible response to the film has motivated Universal to roll the dice.

“Universal didn’t position ‘Compton’ as an awards contender,’ O’Neil notes. “But it’s suddenly getting that buzz because of its quality and audience impact. Once it plays out in theaters, the studio will campaign it aggressively to Academy members via DVDs shipped to their homes.”

The Oscar campaign could also include getting the film’s director F. Gary Gray and actors in the film like O’Shea Jackson Jr. (who is receiving rave reviews playing Ice Cube, who is his father in real life) to host parties where they mingle with award season voters before the nominations deadline.

Straight Outta Compton Jaimie Trueblood Oscar 3But just because the film is raking in the dough in theaters doesn’t mean it’s a shoe-in for award season nominations.

Mike Hogan, Vanity Fair’s digital director, believes the film has an up-hill battle to become a contender.

“Music biopics in general don’t perform terribly well with the Academy,” he wrote to BI in an email. “'La Bamba' and 'The Doors' were blanked. 'What’s Love Got To Do With It' and 'Walk the Line' were shut out of Best Picture [Oscars] even though they scored in acting categories.”

Hogan notes the Best Picture nominations for "Ray," the biopic on Ray Charles in 2005, and "Coal Miner’s Daughter," biopic on Loretta Lynn in 1980, as exceptions because those he believes had the perfect mixture of focus on universally beloved legends and directors who were industry veterans.

Ray 1There’s also the factor that “Straight Outta Compton” doesn’t shy from the raw realities surrounding the group, from their violent upbringing in Compton, their in-your-face lyrics, and their groupie lifestyle on the road.

“That rawness could make it a tough sell with Oscar voters who are older, whiter, and more sentimental than the general public,” said Hogan.

But O’Neil believes this might be the perfect moment for a film like “Straight Outta Compton.”

“The Academy is hungry to recognize African-American movies,” he believes. “'Selma' suddenly became a strong contender last year out of the blue one year after '12 Years A Slave' won Best Picture.”

O’Neil believes the buzz for “Compton” is real and that it could “snag a nomination for Best Picture.”

BI reached out to Universal for comment but has not yet receives a response.

Meet the composer behind spy thriller 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' and the much-anticipated Steve Jobs biopic

Man From Uncle 2 Daniel Smith

With over 100 credits on movies and TV, Daniel Pemberton, 35, is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after composers in Hollywood.

And 2015 looks to be a banner year for the Englishman as he takes on two high-profile projects, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (currently in theaters) and “Steve Jobs” (out October 9).

“Kiss goodbye to your life,” Pemberton told Business Insider this week while taking a break from putting the final touches on the “Steve Jobs” score at the legendary Abbey Road recording studio in London.

The work has been constant for over a year for Pemberton, but he's not complaining. Working alongside some of the biggest names in the business has allowed Pemberton to create music he believes is different than what we’re hearing often in today’s movies.

That’s what got him the gig on “U.N.C.L.E.,” a reboot of the 1964 spy comedy starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, and Alicia Vikander.

Director Guy Richie was weaving through the usual composers the film’s studio Warner Bros. had compiled for him when he came across Pemberton’s show reel.

Daniel Pemberton_3 Photo Credit Amelia Pemberton copy“He said it was the first one that didn’t sound exactly like everyone else’s,” said Pemberton, whose recent credits range from Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” to the PBS “Nova” series.

Richie offered Pemberton the job on the spot and worked on the music for “U.N.C.L.E.” for the next 11 months.

“Guy’s feeling is if you’ve seen it or heard it before why do it again,” said Pemberton, who was intimidated at first to work with Richie as his films always have such a unique sounds.

“His last movies were the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ films which had fantastic scores by Hans Zimmer!” said Pemberton, referring to the legendary composer.

But Pemberton believes what settled him was the way Richie wanted the music made. Instead of the typical plan of having a composer come in toward the end of post production and spend a few months with an orchestra creating the sound, Richie had Pemberton involved once editing began.

“I think one of the most important things when you write a film score is having room to fail,” Pemberton said. “If you have room to fail you can try great, crazy ideas, that’s really exciting.”

With time to develop the score, Pemberton brought in individual musicians to try out different ideas.

The breakthrough came when he brought in a bass flute.

“We tried a lot of different ideas over the big car chase that opens the movie and Guy felt [the sound] was too predictable,” Pemberton recalled.

Man From Uncle chase“And then suddenly I did some work with this amazing flute player Dave Heath who normally plays classical concertos. I was like, ‘Show me the crazy noises you can make that no one lets you do.’ What he did I thought was really cool, so I started writing something around that sound, recorded it and Guy was really into that and it ended up being a big part of the sound in the film.”

Dave Heath on Bass Flute at UNCLE session_photo credit Amelia PembertonOver the course of the 11 months working on the score, Pemberton also brought in players of everything from Spanish guitar, accordions, organs, harpsichords, and “every part of percussion you can ever imagine” to create a vintage 1960s cloak-and-dagger secret agent sound for “U.N.C.L.E.”

Here's some shots of Pemberton hard at work with his musicians:

Daniel Pemberton_4 Photo Credit Amelia Pemberton copy

Daniel Pemberton_2 Photo Credit Amelia Pemberton

Daniel Pemberton Photo Credit Amelia PembertonPemberton hasn’t had much time for a break. Soon after he was done with “U.N.C.L.E.” director Danny Boyle came calling asking him to come on his “Steve Jobs” project.

On the film for the last 9 months, Pemberton says it’s very different from creating the score for “U.N.C.L.E.”

Steve Jobs.JPG“What we’re trying to do with 'Steve Jobs' is going to be a surprise in some ways,” he said. “The film is a very clear three act structure and we have a device that is trying to play with that in the score.”

Pemberton wouldn’t go into anymore detail about the sound in “Steve Jobs,” as the score could be faintly heard on his end of the phone during our interview.

“If I told you what was happening right now you’d be like, ‘What the hell?,’” he said.

Here's an incredible first look at the largest heart that humans have ever preserved

$

For over a year, the giant, 400-pound heart of a blue whale sat tucked away — frozen — in a warehouse two hours east of Toronto, Canada.

Just last month, scientists at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) removed the heart from its icy chamber so they could begin preserving it long-term. Luckily for us, they documented the whole thing. Feast your eyes on what is likely the largest heart that humans have ever preserved:

heart "To our knowledge this is the first blue whale heart to be anatomically preserved for exhibit and study," Jacqueline Miller, who is a mammalogy technician from the ROM, said in a PBS video. The video is a short clip from the new three-night television series "Big Blue Live," scheduled to air on PBS August 31.

The heart weighs 400 pounds, is about 5 feet long, and — when in action — pumped about 60 gallons of blood with every single heartbeat. It took a total of four people to push the heart through a hole they had carved into the chest cavity, Miller said.

Blue whales are thought to be the largest animal that has ever lived. The heaviest on record weighed 190 metric tonnes (418,000 pounds) and was 98 feet long. Here's how an average human sizes up:

blue whale Moreover, blue whales are an endangered species. No more than 12,000 of them are thought to inhabit the Earth. When they die, their bodies often sink to the seafloor, providing a bona-fide feast for the animals below.

As a result, biologists rarely get a chance to study the internal anatomy of these giant mammals. When the carcass of a blue whale washed ashore in Newfoundland, Canada, in May of last year, Miller and other experts saw a golden opportunity. Here they are cutting open the body:

The giant organ took five days to thaw after scientists unplugged the freezer it was being preserved in.

Miller and her colleagues then plugged up the numerous arteries and pumped a total of about 1,000 gallons of formaldehyde throughout the heart. Formaldehyde has a nauseating scent, but it stops decomposition dead in its tracks.

Miller, for obvious reasons, is wearing a mask as she wades through the swimming pool of formaldehyde to show us the heart's aorta:

whale After a week in its formaldehyde bath, the heart will be removed, dehydrated with acetone, and, lastly, slowly filled with silicone. After the silicone has hardened, the heart will be fully preserved and eventually ready for display at the ROM.

Joining the heart will be the same whale's skeleton.

Check out the clip with Miller and the blue whale heart below:

The Foo Fighters 'Rick-roll'd' the Westboro Baptist Church

Foo Fighters 'rickroll' Westboro Baptist ChurchThe Foo Fighters "Rick-rolled" the Westboro Baptist Church, when the protest group gathered to protest at the entrance to one of their concerts on Friday.

The church, which is known for protesting military funerals with wildly insensitive signs, were picketing outside the Sprint Center in Kansas City, where the Foo Fighters were scheduled to perfom.

In response, the Foo Fighters drove up to the venue and lead a sing-along to Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up," a phenomenon known on the internet as "Rick-rolling."

The band brandished signs of their own, including "Keep it Clean" and "You Got Rick Roll'd Again."

The moment echoed another in 2011, when Foo Fighters responded to the hateful chants of the mob with an impromptu flatbed concert, the superstars fought fire with music yet again.

As you can see in the video below, the band sits in the bed of a pickup truck adorned with massive speakers blaring "American Idiot" from Green Day as it rounds the corner.

As the truck approaches the "church" group, the speakers begin blasting "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley (hence "Rick"-rolling). Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for the band, is seen holding a sign reading "You Got Rickroll'd (Again)" as Dave Grohl claps along to the song. There is also a rather large companion seen in a very small, colorful bathing suit holding a sign reading "Keep it Clean," an ode to the first time the Foo Fighters tussled with the group.

Given the two groups' shared history for loud, albeit peaceful, confrontations, a group of Foo Fighter fans seemed to be waiting for just such an occasion. And, seeing the opportunity to hijack the protest, a massive dance party erupts around the "church" group as the Foo Fighters egg their fans on.

'Terminator Genisys' was a dud in the US, but is now crushing it in China

terminator genisys arnold schwarzenegger

Though “Terminator Genisys” has struggled to get to $100 million at the U.S. box office, it’s a different story overseas.

The latest installment in the franchise nabbed the fourth-biggest opening day for a U.S. release in China over the weekend.

According to Variety, the film took in $27.4 million in 25,000 theaters. That pushes the film’s worldwide gross past $350 million.

A majority of that has been in overseas sales, as the film has only grossed $89 million to date since its release July 1. "Straight Outta Compton," which was made at a fraction of what "Genisys" was, passed $100 million in its second week of release.

Though “Genisys” even had the blessings of the franchise’s creator James Cameron, the film’s complex storyline and practically giving away the plot in its trailers has resulted in the film only having a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes to date.

“Terminator Genisys” marked the first time Arnold Schwarzenegger had a major role in the franchise since "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" in 2003.

Regardless of how the film has done domestically, if it continues to be a strong earner overseas it’s likely more “Terminators” are coming.

Sales of Dr. Dre's new album fall 85% during its 2nd week after 'Compton' controversy

Dr. Dre

On the heels of the controversy surrounding rapper Dr. Dre's alleged history of abusing women, the latest album from Dre, titled "Compton," had a drastic drop in album sales in its second week.

According to Hits Daily Double, the album sold only 42,732 copies, an 85% drop from the 286,000 copies sold during its debut week.

"Compton" marks the first album by Dre in over 15 years, and it was tied to the release of "Straight Outta Compton," the biopic about the rap group N.W.A., which Dre was a member of.

On Friday, Dre issued a statement to The New York Times in which he apologized for allegations of abusing women.

"Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did," Dre wrote in a statement. "I've been married for 19 years and every day I'm working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way. I'm doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again. I apologize to the women I've hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives."

Dre's past has found recent attention since the box-office success of "Straight Outta Compton." In the film, there's no mention of Dre's alleged assault on hip-hop journalist Dee Barnes while Dre was a member of N.W.A.

"Straight Outta Compton" had the highest-grossing opening weekend ever in the US for a music biopic. It has grossed over $100 million domestically.

In a new data study, Polygraph's Matt Daniels takes a closer look at these patterns. He compiled all the Billboard Top 100 song lists from the 1950s to today and cross-referenced each song with its play count on Spotify to gauge present popularity.

And the results are pretty surprising. For example, Linkin Park's popularity is enduring more than many of us might have expected.

Still, the list shows what could be considered classics among Spotify's 75 million users.

While jams like Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" make the cut, some of the other tracks are surprising. Though it's only really relevant one month of the year, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" has a spot othe list.

It's worth noting that several top artists, including The Beatles and Taylor Swift, are not available on Spotify, so they aren't factored into the data.

Keep reading to find out the 30 most timeless songs on Spotify.

Fetty Wap

Fetty Wap's first album doesn't come out for another month, and the rapper is already breaking records. He's the first artist to simultaneously have four singles on the Billboard Top 10 rap songs.

His new single "Again" debuted in the eighth slot on Billboard, joining "Trap Queen" at number two, "My Way" at number three, and "679" at number five.

"Trap Queen" continues its reign as Wap's biggest hit. It's been in the top 3 for 25 of its 31 weeks on the chart, and it's hanging in at number 7 on the Billboard hot 100.

Other artists have had four songs chart in the top 10 before, but no one else has ever done it simultaneously. 50 Cent was the first to have four concurrent songs in the top 10, in 2005, but in one song he was a featured artist — Wap is the lead artist in all four of his charting tracks.

Wap's debut album, which he said will be self-titled, is set for release on September 25. We're countin' up, watching how far Fetty goes.

Remember the name Frank Dillane. You'll be hearing a lot about him in the coming weeks.

The 24-year-old actor captured the attention of viewers during Sunday's season premiere of AMC's "Walking Dead" companion series, "Fear the Walking Dead." Not just a handsome face, he certainly did a great job during some of the premiere episode's most exciting scenes.

Acting is the family business.
Dillane's father is Stephen Dillane, an actor on "Game of Thrones" who was nominated for an Emmy for his role on miniseries "John Adams." Stephen and Frank worked together on a couple films, including the feature film, "Papadopoulos & Sons."

Dillane's mother, Naomi Wirthner, is the director and co-founder of a theater company called Barebones Project.

He's already sort of familiar with zombies. He apparently played one at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in a student film. He graduated from RADA in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in acting.

The London-born actor worked with a dialogue coach for "Fear the Walking Dead."
"Dialect was my biggest fear, so I spent a long time working with dialect coaches just trying to get American down," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I think it’s very important and very easy to misinterpret. So, I mean I haven’t seen the pilot yet, so I am not sure as to whether I did a good job yet or not, but the accent is certainly my biggest fear."

You may remember him from a little role in 2009's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

His fans still love him in the role.

And although it wasn't a big role, he was memorable on Netflix's "Sense8" earlier this year.

Dillane played Shugs, Riley's (Tuppence Middleton) close friend.

This year, Dillane also stars in the Ron Howard film "In the Heart of the Sea" alongside Chris Hemsworth.

The film was supposed to be out in March, but it has been pushed to December.

His next film is about a punk band on tour. It's called "Viena and the Fantomes" and has a pretty stellar cast: Zoë Kravitz, Dakota Fanning, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jon Bernthal.

For now, catch Frank Dillane on AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" Sundays at 9 p.m.

Vin Diesel XXX

Following over a year of talking about it, Vin Diesel took to Instagram over the weekend and announced that a sequel to his 2002 actioner “xXx” will begin shooting in December in the Philippines.

Vin Diesel instagram finalThe film was pegged to Gen Xers as X-Games meets James Bond with Diesel, on the heels of the first “Fast and Furious” movie being a hit, playing a thrill-seeking extreme sports athlete who is recruited by the government to infiltrate a Russian terrorist group.

The movie had a modest theatrical run, winning its opening weekend with a $44.5 million take and ending up with a $277 million worldwide gross

But any potential for a franchise looked to be dead when Ice Cube replaced Diesel in the 2005 sequel, “xXx: State of the Union.” The film only made $71 million worldwide.

With Diesel behind the successful “Fast and Furious” franchise, which includes its latest film, “Furious 7,” making over $1.5 billion worldwide, it seems the actor is entitled to take on a pet project.
