San Diego Comic-Con kicked off its four-day long extravaganza Thursday morning.

During "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" panel, a fan asked the cast if they could do their best imitation of the iconic whistle from the movie.

You know, this one.

While they weren't so good at duplicating the whistle, they did make a noise they agreed was reminiscent of the "X-Files" theme.

Actor Josh Hutcherson may not have been able to recreate the whistle either, but he was able to demonstrate some other skills that piqued panel host Conan O'Brien's interest.

Bill Murray surprised fans who woke up early for the first day of San Diego Comic-Con, but the only person he may have surprised more was Jennifer Lawrence.

The two stars ran into each other at the event, and Lawrence's reaction was priceless.

It's exactly how anyone would react when meeting Murray.

As for the 64-year-old actor, it was another day in the life of Bill Murray.

2 ‘Big Bang Theory’ stars made a surprise Comic-Con appearance and read ’50 Shades of Grey’ fan fiction on stage

"The Big Bang Theory" stars Mayim Bialik and Kunal Nayyar made a surprise appearance at the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel on Friday.

The panel peeled the curtain back on the show’s history and making, and featured its Emmy Award-winning writers and creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. Nayyar, who plays shy, effeminate astrophysicistRaj Koothrappali, joined the panel as moderator.

Early in the discussion, Nayyar asked the writers whether or not they read any of the multitudes of "Big Bang Theory" fan fiction floating around on the internet. Writer and producer Steve Holland said that once they opened Pandora's box, the writers became addicted to it.

"We kind of got wrapped up in it," said Holland, who admitted to reading it out loud in the writers' room.

One story that caught their interest took place during a season eight episode titled "The Prom Equivalency," and followed the off-camera escapades of Amy Fowler, Bialik’s brilliant, quirky neurobiologist character.

big bang theory, the prom equivalency

"It started out as a joke," Holland says, "then we got into the story."

At this point in the panel, Bialik was welcomed on stage and invited to read some original fan fiction — penned by the show’s writers — that captures a heated moment between her and Nayyar’s characters. They took to the podium, cleared their throats, and stood close.

"Amy looked at Koothrappali, staring at the stars through his telescope. She had always thought of him as a friend, but now, something was different," Bialik read from the script. "She spent her life studying the brain, but she had a feeling tonight, this swami of love was going to teach her about another organ."

Nayyar looked up, stared at the woman next to him, and crooned, "Have you ever read '50 Shades of Grey?' I’m about to introduce you to '50 Shades of Brown.'"

The crowd screamed with delight.

"Amy replied, ‘That doesn’t make sense," Bialik said. "'Grey' was the main character’s last name."

"That kind of semantic nit-picking,” Nayyar retorted, in a husky bravado, "is going to get you a spanking."

"Oh my. Then I should point out 'semantic' is the wrong word, you sexy beast from the third world."

The bit continued for a minute longer, and the audience ate up every second.

"Big Bang Theory" returns to CBS for its ninth season this fall.

A 'Hunger Games' actor may have accidentally revealed that more movies might be in the works

peeta catching fire hunger gamesWhen "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" premieres this November, the YA box office phenomenon will, presumably, come to an end. After all, that is the end of the story author Suzanne Collins laid out in her hit trilogy of novels. But last night, one of the actors accidentally let it slip that there might be more movies to come after "Mockingjay."

The goof happened on last night's San Diego Comic-Con episode of  "Conan," where the host had stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth on the show to talk up "Mockingjay." At one point, Conan asks the cast if the "Hunger Games" franchise would follow the same pattern established by other popular YA series like "Harry Potter" and somehow cobble together a way to keep making more movies.

"There is —" Josh Hutcherson blurted out before Jennifer Lawrence was able to reply. Both of his costars then give him sidelong glances as the three of them try to walk back what looked like a pretty big blunder. "Well see what happens!" Hutcherson then said.

"That's the worst lying I have ever seen," Conan quipped.

Of course, as Slashfilm points out, "Hunger Games" studio Lionsgate is pretty transparent about wanting to extend the franchise, but it still seems like this was a genuine goof — especially because the video with Hutcherson's slip-up was deleted from Conan's TeamCoco.com shortly after going live.

You will soon be able to enjoy Homer Simpson's drink of choice

Screen Shot 2015 07 10 at 4.00.42 PM

Homer Simpson's drink of choice — Duff Beer — is becoming a reality.

The iconic brew will initially be offered in Chile, "with plans to roll out to more of South America and Europe by early next year," The Wall Street Journal reports

"The Simpsons" is hugely popular in Latin America. In fact, in Bolivia, when one TV station announced that it would cut down the daily two-hour blocks of "Simpsons" episodes, around 2,000 protesters took to the streets in protest. The network had no choice but to cave to the public demand and keep the show on air.

This popularity caused a number of unofficial Duff beers to be produced, many in Chile. Fox's official branded product will make it harder for imposters worldwide to market their own versions of Duff, as well as running the Chilean pretenders out of the market.

“Because the product did not in fact exist, the argument goes that Fox cannot claim trademark on it,”Ariel Casarin, an associate professor at the Universidad Adolfo Ibanez in Santiago, Chile told the Wall Street Journal.

Screen Shot 2015 07 10 at 4.20.52 PMOver the years, Fox has become entangled in a number of lawsuits with brewers taking license with the iconic brand name. Now it seems that the time has come for Fox to roll up their selves and beat the brewers at their own game.

Jeffrey Godsick, president of Fox's consumer products division describes the beer as a "premium lager," that apparently has a deep golden color and caramel aromatics.

Fans of the show will immediately note that this does not nearly fit the profile of Springfields beloved Duff.

Duff_AdequateThe whole idea of Duff beer is that it's a parody of the cheap, generic beers that Americans are so familiar with.

In the episode "A Tree Grows in Springfield," Homer asks barkeep Moe for his finest beer. Moe, without missing a beat, gives him a "Duff Adequate."

Duff's mascot, Duffman is a parody of beer commercials and marketing, specifically the 1980s Budweiser mascot Bud Man.

To make Duff a crafty beer would seem to defeat the purpose — but perhaps that is the purpose.

“Duff is inspired by the brand that’s in the show, but it begins and ends at that,” Mr. Godsick told the Wall Street Journal. “It’s a completely stand-alone brand … you will not see any characters from the show involved in the marketing in any way.”

Simpsons season 27

That makes sense as the Simpsons brand, beloved by children, seeks to stay far away from any branded alcohol products in the real world.

So some day soon we may all be able to do as Homer Simpson does and enjoy a cold Duff beer on a hot Christmas morning.

amy sheldon mayim bialik jim parsons the big bang theory season 8

Diehard fans of CBS's Emmy-darling "The Big Bang Theory" packed into Ballroom 20 at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.

During the "Inside The Big Bang Theory Writer's Room" panel — in which the show's stars Mayim Bialik and Kunal Nayyar made surprise appearances — executive producer and writer Steve Molaro revealed that fans can expect major scoops on Sheldon and Amy's relationship in the premiere episode of season nine.

Last we left "Shamy," as the couple is known by fans, Amy broke things off after Sheldon interrupted an intimate moment to talk about "The Flash." In a season eight finale twist, fans discovered that Sheldon was in fact ready to move their relationship to the next level. He bought a wedding ring and planned to propose.

When asked by an audience member when exactly Sheldon bought the ring, Molaro said, "The answer will be in the premiere episode of season nine."

Mayim Bialik, Bill Prady, Big Bang Theory, Comic-Con

Even Bialik gasped. Her costar Nayyar said earlier in the panel that the cast often doesn't receive an episode script until the night before filming.

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that things between Sheldon and Amy are far from over.

"I don't know exactly what's going to happen but [Sheldon is] clearly fond of her," Molaro told THR. "I don't think they're done speaking by any means. He's so fond of her — something is going to happen between them, I'm sure."

"The Big Bang Theory" returns to CBS for season nine this fall.

Warner Bros. went all out to showcase "Batman v Superman" at San Diego Comic-Con.

Out next March, attendees can find props for the film and toys expected to be released in the coming months.

However, Con-goers are most excited about the actual costumes from the film that are on display.

In the center of the DC Comics booth are four costumes showcasing two different suits Batman will wear in the film along with Superman and Wonder Woman.

Fans can't get enough of them.

We've already seen Batman's suit in the first trailer. It was pretty dark there.

Here's another look at it:

Why one man walked over 600 miles to Comic-Con in a 'Star Wars' costume

kevin doyle star wars stormtrooper

On Thursday night, 57-year-old Kevin Doyle finished his trek of over 600 miles from Petaluma, California, to San Diego, in a tribute to his late wife Eileen, who passed away due to pancreatic cancer in November 2012.

Both Kevin and Eileen were huge "Star Wars" fans. According to Kevin's fundraising page for his trek to Comic Con, Eileen loved to draw characters from "Star Wars," and she was "so popular at the Comic Book Shows... appearing as a guest artist, her fans were of all ages and would surround her tables with smiles on their face and full of conversation."

But just over a year after Eileen was diagnosed with metastatic adenocarcinoma in October 2011, Eileen passed away. Kevin says he still attends the comic book shows, "but not so much for myself but rather more to honor Eileen and the art she created and to keep her presence at the shows."

Kevin offered personal details on his fundraising page:

On November 7th of 2012 Eileen lost her battle with cancer. From that day forward the sun does not rise for me, everyday is November the 7th, my candle has burned out. Eileen was the most amazing person I ever knew, she was so beautiful, so thoughtful and she was loved by everyone who knew her. Eileen was the center of so many lives just as she was in my life but while our time together here on earth was so very short my devotion to her is life long and I can't imagine my life without her. So I honor her with every breath I take and I keep her spirit close to my heart as I continue on.

So nearly three years after his wife's death, with a big "Star Wars" movie coming later this year, Kevin set out for Comic Con 2015 in San Diego in true "Star Wars" style: He left Rancho Obi-Wan, a museum totally dedicated to the "Star Wars" franchise, on June 6, and walked roughly 645 miles, pushing a cart filled with camping gear, bandannas, coloring books and extra clothes, in an all-white stormtrooper outfit, while wearing a sign on his back: "I race in memory of Eileen Shige Doyle."

star wars stormtrooper kevin doyle

"It's just been one amazing experience," Kevin told Coast News.

During his trek, Kevin has also been raising awareness for "Eileen's Little Angels," a non-profit charity he's creating in honor of his wife. And he's getting plenty of attention: motorists, bicyclists, joggers and walkers have stopped to say hi to the stormtrooper, take a few pictures, and support Kevin on his journey.

star wars stormtrooper kevin doyle"For me, I haven't had my head around it just quite yet," Kevin said. "For me, it's just me walking to honor my wife, but then people are gathering and making it really special. And they're making it personal for them, which I hadn't accounted for that — that people would receive me in that way."

Now that Kevin's arrived safely in San Diego, he will enjoy Comic Con thanks to a generous weekend pass provided by Rancho Obi-Wan CEO and president Steve Sansweet. He's also got a free four-night stay at a local hotel thanks to his friends from the local 501st Legion, a volunteer organization for costume-wearers. And once Comic Con wraps up, Kevin will take an Amtrak train home instead of walking. But he says he hopes to leave time for himself during the return trip and beyond.

"We'll see what happens after this," Kevin told Coast News. "I kind of left this as an open book for me."

Scientists figured out what's making these California shoppers buy more junk food

ben and jerry's

To buy or not to buy that pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream?

It's an all-too-familiar recurring dilemma that surfaces every grocery run. And if it's not ice cream then it's cookies, candy, chips, or something else that is delicious but also packed full of salt and sugar, which is neither good for your health or waste line.

But what makes you ultimately decide to buy, or pass, on the Chunky Monkey?

One reason could be if you're bringing your own reusable bags to the grocery store, according to a recent study.

Uma Karmarkar, assistant professor of marketing at Harvard Business School, and her research partner Bryan Bollinger, at Duke's Fugqua School of Business, studied two years and nearly 1 million grocery transactions (from loyalty-card data) of shopper's purchasing habits from a major California grocery store chain.

They were also able to get information about the types of bags the shoppers were using: whether they were using plastic bags from the store or bringing their own, reusable bags.

"It was clear that shoppers who brought their own bags were more likely to replace nonorganic versions of goods like milk with organic versions," Karmarkar told Harvard Business Review. "So one green action led to another. But those same people were also more likely to buy foods like ice cream, chips, candy bars, and cookies."

While shoppers who brought their own bags were 0.25% more likely to buy organic food, they were 1.24% more likely to purchase junk food items. But why?

junk foodWell, people know they're doing something good by using reusable grocery bags, and when we're good we feel like we deserve a reward. Experts call this psychological reasoning "licensing."

"If behave well in one situation, I give myself license to misbehave in another, unrelated situation," Karmarkar explained. "In this case bringing a bag makes you think you're environmentally friendly, so you get some ice cream."

Karmarkar makes a point to emphasize in the paper detailing the study that the results are strictly taken from California shoppers, and therefore are not a large enough sample to suggest that everyone who brings their own bags are more likely to buy junk food.

Shoppers on the East Coast for example may not be at risk of this unhealthy habit. However, considering the root cause for the habit seems to be behavior and not location, it's something to watch out for, at least. Karmarkar said that while this behavioral trait might be leading to unhealthy choices, it's what makes us human:

"I think it's fun that humans are like this, that these subtle subconscious effects can move our decisions around. It's something that makes us interesting."

Not every “Game of Thrones” actor reads the books to know the fate of their characters.

So sometimes events from the books get spoiled for them.

During the “Game of Thrones” panel Friday afternoon at San Diego Comic-Con, actress Maisie Williams said that’s exactly what happened to her when fans of George R.R. Martin's book series spoiled the character’s arc for her.

“People would come up and be like Arya goes blind!” Williams revealed at the panel.

Instead of looking shocked, the actress said she went along with it.

“Even though I didn’t know it, I’m like, ‘Yeah, I know. Yeah, I’m so aware and pretend I knew but I didn’t,” she said.

Williams’ character finally did go blind in the season five finale which aired on HBO back in June

Don't expect to see a lot of images from the anticipated "Star Wars" panel at Comic-Con on social media.

The panel is apparently so secretive that security is going around telling fans no photos are allowed to be taken inside the room during the event.

 Via /film's Peter Sciretta:

That's unusual.

But, we do know that Disney is very keen about keeping footage from its panels under lockdown to prevent leaks.

How do you stop a room full of over 6,500 people from taking photos?

With night vision goggles, of course.

However, that hasn't stopped press members from tweeting out images of what's been appearing on screen during the anticipated panel.

Update: It sounds like fans were finally given permission to take some sort of photos from the panel.

Still, everyone received a big speech on recording.

It’s the moment everyone who attending this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was waiting for — The “Star Wars” panel.

And it didn’t disappoint.

“The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams came with a lot of surprises up his sleeve. From bringing out cast members ranging from the new breed like John Boyega, Adam Drive, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, and Daisy Ridley to the legends from the original trilogy returning for the upcoming film like Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford.

Abrams even invited all of the six thousand-plus in attendance at Hall H to come join him to a “Star Wars” concert.

Check out everything that went down.

But the biggest highlight was the behind-the-scenes video package Abrams showed to the audience. And thank God for the Internet, because it’s already gone online.

And it is VERY revealing.

Abrams is going back to the pre-CGI "Star Wars" glory days and using a lot of practical effects. As you can see with this character featured in the video.

It's probably not a good idea to have your Comic-Con panel after "Star Wars."

Director Kevin Smith learned that the hard way.

Smith was pumped to share his feelings on anything and everything from his AMC series "Comic Book Men" to the "Star Wars" panel that came before him during the 7:15 p.m. panel for his new movie "Yoga Hosers."

However, there was just one problem.

At the end of the "Star Wars" panel, everyone was invited and swept away to a secret "Star Wars" concert, leaving the normally packed Hall H feeling strangely empty.

Poor Kevin Smith!

Still, the panel wasn’t cancelled, and it wasn’t totally empty.

Those who attend saw a trailer for his new film and were able to ask Smith about anything from his vast knowledge of the Con and about his new movie.
