This photo of people camped out at Comic-Con sums up how far fans will go to get a glimpse of their favorite actors

San Diego Comic-Con kicks off Thursday, with the casts of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2," "Doctor Who," and more making appearances.

We stopped by the convention center on preview day and discovered devoted fans camped out overnight in order to snag seats in the famed Hall Hthe biggest venue at Comic-Con where the biggest television and movie panels take place.

Entrance to Hall H is no small feat. The Daily Dot reported that in previous years, the line stretched a mile long. Tents are set up to protect attendees from weather conditions and the blazing sun.

Once you're in Hall H, you're in. The room doesn't empty in between panels (though it does empty at the end of each day).

So if you want to guarantee a seat at the "Lucasfilm" panel (aka the "Star Wars" panel) at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening, you have to get in early and sit through the five previous panels that day.

Still, queuing up outside overnight has become a rite of passage for fans.

One such fan is Yvonne, 20, a San Francisco State University student. She and her boyfriend were first in line for Hall H.

The couple arrived Tuesday at noon in order to secure spots for the "Doctor Who" panel on Thursday at 2:15 p.m. They brought blankets, sunscreen, books, their cosplay (or role-playing) outfits, cards, and a memory foam pillow.

By the time we chatted with Yvonne on Wednesday afternoon, the battery in her Kindle died and ants invaded her pretzel jar.

Pedestrian after pedestrian approached to ask what she was in line for. Eventually, a member of the queue hung this sign.

But for Yvonne and other diehard fans, the chance to see the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and or Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), in person is an opportunity not to be missed.

May the seating odds be ever in their favor.

Over 130,000 these huge oversized bags are being giving out to fans at Comic-Con

When you head to San Diego Comic-Con you're most likely to see fans dressed up in cosplay, people waiting in lines to get into some of the most anticipated panels of the weekend, and giant oversized bags sporting the faces and logos of some big TV shows.

You literally cannot turn your head without seeing a person wearing them.

sdcc 2015 guests

The bags are given out to everyone to store their Comic-Con swag as they pick up badges to gain access to the convention floor.

This year Warner Bros. TV is giving out over 130,000 bags to Comic-Con attendees throughout the weekend.

Each bag has one of over a dozen designs from different WB TV series ranging from "Arrow" and "The Flash," to the new "Supergirl" series.

GOTHAM HEROESBATMANARROWGOTHAM VILLAINSSUPERGIRLLUCIFERSUPERNATURALTEEN TITANS GOTHE 100VIXENTHE ORIGINALSTHE VAMPIRE DIARIESTHE FLASH

Here's the thing though.

You don't get to pick the bag you get.

You're given one at random. And when you get it, it's folded up into a small rectangle so that you have to unfold it a few times to see what design awaits you.

Obviously, some designs are cooler than others. (Come on, you know you rather have an Arrow or Gotham bag over a Supernatural one —especially if you're a guy.)

The entire experience is like waiting to see what toy is at the bottom of your Cracker Jack box. It could be awesome ... or it could be a temporary tattoo sticker.

It's more than likely you're not going to get the bag your heart desires.

We were pleasantly surprised when we saw that our bag design wasn't among the ones previously announced by Warner Bros.' TV.

It's a "Batman v Superman" one that we quickly heard people were wanting to trade others for. (We were fast to book out of there.)

It's definitely going to be the most sought-after one at the Con, especially with news expected on the film come Saturday during Warner Bros. big Hall H panel.

The 'Magic Mike' casting director reveals how she chooses which actors to hire

magic mike tatum manganiello

Casting director Carmen Cuba is responsible for bringing muscle men Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, and Joe Magianello to the big screen in the "Magic Mike" franchise.

Carmen CubaAs the founder of Carmen Cuba Casting, based in Los Angeles, she has also hired actors for movies like "Contagion," "The Butterfly Effect," and the upcoming Matt Damon movie "The Martian," among many other projects.

And while it may seem like all fun and games to spend her days looking at hunky men to cast in "Magic Mike" and its sequel, Cuba says a lot goes into hiring an actor for a role.

Cuba recently sat down with Refinery29 to explain what exactly a casting director's job entails:

The short answer is that when I start on something, there is a script (or just an outline) with either a famous person attached or nobody attached and by the time I’m done, every single speaking role in the project has a corresponding actor playing it. It basically involves a lot of brainstorming, listening to pitches, lots of auditioning, helping to structure and negotiate deals, and strategizing about all of the above.

When it came to casting "Magic Mike XXL," Cuba tried to broaden her horizons outside of Hollywood.

Channing Tatum was always attached because it's based on his own real story, but then I filled every single other speaking role. Some of it was traditional auditioning, and some of it was Googling 'actors with six packs' and then bringing the ones who had the best abs in for interviews. I also did a big search in the world of WWF and interviewed lots of wrestlers. I love research and I love people’s stories, so both of these things usually find their way into my work, no matter what the project is.

Once the cast was set, Cuba knew she had chosen the right people to fill the roles, telling Refinery29:

The group of guys bonded so quickly and really had such joy for the projects that it was contagious. Having Joe Magianello tell me about his pre-acting Captain Morgan gig (where he had to dress up as the pirate and sell shots) and Amber Heard telling me about her teenage life ditching school to see old movies in Austin, Texas, were very helpful to me in knowing they were right for their roles.

Read Cuba's full interview with Refinery29 here.

Despite being anticipated as the best sequel of the summer, "Magic Mike XXL" opened to just $11.6 million during it's opening July 1 weekend. 2012's "Magic Mike" made $39 million opening weekend on a $7 million budget.

A physicist just blew the controversy behind this iconic American photo wide-open all over again

Legendary_kiss_V–J_day_in_Times_Square_Alfred_Eisenstaedt (1)

For 67 years, the identity of the two kissers in one of America's most celebrated photos — the "V-J Day in Times Square" or simply "The Kiss" — remained a complete mystery.

The photo was taken by Life Magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt in Times Square in New York City on August 14, 1945 — a day that Americans will forever remember as the "Victory over Japan Day" when Japan surrendered, putting an end to World War II.

In 2012 the book "The Kissing Sailor: The Mystery Behind the Photo that Ended World War II" identified that sailor as George Mendonsa and the nurse as Greta Friedman.

Mendonsa and Friedman's story of how the iconic kiss happened was announced to the world, and the decades-long controversy was finally put to rest.

At least, until now.

The controversy has been blown wide-open once again because Mendonsa and Friedman's story couldn't have happened at the time they said it did, according to Texas State physicist Donald Olsen and his two colleagues, Russell Doescher, an astrophysicist at Texas State, and Steven D. Kawaler, an astrophysicist at Iowa State University.

The three scientists pointed out a flaw in the story when they sought to answer another question about this iconic photo that few people think to ask: What time of day Eisenstaedt took the photo.

Olsen scrutinized the length and angle of the various shadows of people and buildings in the photo to help him get an idea of the time of day. He also built scale models of some of the buildings in Time Square back in 1945 based from measurements he found in old maps and blueprints of the square, as well as aerial photos to determine the time, once and for all.

But what ultimately clinched it was the length of the shadow on a clock in the photo. The shadow, Olsen realized, was generated by a sign above the clock. By calculating the distance between the clock and sign, he determined the location of the sun in the sky, which then gave him the time of day.

The KissAfter four years working on this project, Olsen and the team announced beyond any doubt that the famous kiss happened at 5:51 p.m. According to Wired, you can read a report of their findings in the upcoming August issue of Sky and Telescope Magazine.

The problem is that Mendonsa and Friedman’s story place their kiss at around 2:00 p.m. Mendonsa said that the kiss happened shortly after he left a movie at 1:05 p.m. and Friedman said that she was on a late lunch break.

While the two purported kissers might just be misremembering the time of day — after all it happened nearly 70 years ago — Olsen's study brings their story and subsequent claims of being the famous sailor and nurse into question.

Although he’s solved the time of day, Olsen told Wired that he still hasn’t a clue as to the identity of the people in the photo. That mystery is one that will have to remain unsolved, for now.

Ariana Grande is embroiled in a donut-licking scandal that's spiraling out of control

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande celebrated the Fourth of July by licking several donuts in a California shop while un-patriotically proclaiming "I hate America" — and it's all the internet has been able to talk about since.

Since Grande's donut shop trip over the holiday weekend, social media platforms have been going nuts with unfolding reports of the incident. Actor Rob Lowe majorly dissed Grande on Twitter, comparing this to the Dixie Chicks scandal of 2003. The police have gotten involved and the donut shop where the incident occurred has even been investigated for health code violations.

Grande, along with some friends including her backup dancer and boyfriend, Ricky Alvarez, caused quite a scene during a recent visit to the Wolfee Donut Shop in Lake Elsinore, California, TMZ reports.

Security footage shows what appears to be Grande and Alvarez licking donuts on the store's front counter and then bursting into laughter.

After salivating on a powdered donut, the 22-year-old singer then made her move toward another tray of confections and continued her tongue tirade.

ariana donut lick 1

"She was really rude," said a Wolfee Donut Shop cashier to The Associated Press of the star's interactions with the shop's employees.

Grande and Alvarez then put their tongues to a different task and shared an intimate kiss, all the while still standing in front of the donut counter.

Near the end of the video, a different tray of donuts is placed in front of Grande.

"What the f--- is this? I hate Americans. I hate America. That is disgusting," Grande appears to say in response to the tray.

After Grande and her friends left the store, the contaminated donuts were sold to other unsuspecting customers.

“Somewhere out there the donuts ended up with a customer, because that night we ended up selling out,” Wolfee Donut Shop owner Joe Marin told Us Weekly

Grande has since apologized for her verbal attack on America, explaining that her outburst was in reference to America's obesity problem, not the country in general.

Here's her formal Twitter apology.

In case you find it hard to read above:

I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American and I’ve always made it clear that I love my country. What I said in a private moment with my friend, who was buying the donuts, was taken out of context and I am sorry for not using more discretion with my choice of words. As an advocate for healthy eating, food is very important to me and I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole. The fact that the United States has one of the highest child obesity rates in the world frustrates me. We need to do more to educate ourselves and our children about the dangers of overeating and the poison that we put into our bodies. We need to demand more from our food industry. However I should have known better in how I expressed myself; and with my new responsibility to others as a public figure I will strive to be better. As for why I cannot be at the MLB show, I have had emergency oral surgery and due to recovery I cannot attend the show. I hope to make it up to all those fans soon. That being said let me once again apologize if I have offended anyone with my poor choice of words. - Ariana Grande

However, Grande has not specifically apologized for the actual licking and many Twitter users have called her out for this lack of acknowledgment.

Celebrities are also weighing in on the donut debacle. Earlier Thursday, actor Rob Lowe started trending on Facebook for his Twitter takedown of the pop-star.

Take a look one of Lowe's tweets.

Lowe even compared Grande to The Dixie Chicks, a country music band that came under fire in 2003 after its lead singer said the group was ashamed to call President George W. Bush a fellow Texan

Adding insult to injury, Lowe ends this tweet with the hashtag, #IActuallyLoveAmerica.

There were been reports that Grande and her friends were being investigated by the police for the incident, but the LA Times reported that the Wolfee Donut Shop, not Grande, was being investigated

The Riverside County Department of Health looked into why it was so easy for Grande and her friends to orally assault the sweet treats. They also wanted to know if the shop had a history of leaving donuts unattended with customers, explains The LA Times

On Thursday, the Wolfee Donut Shop was downgraded from an "A" to a "B" health rating, CBS reports. Marin has a week to fix the shop's "minor infractions."

ariana grande

Grande was slated to headline the upcoming Major League Baseball All-Star Concert. She will no longer be performing due to the removal of her wisdom teeth, according to a statement from a Grande representative to The Associated Press

"As for why I cannot be at the MLB show, I have had emergency oral surgery and due to recovery I cannot attend the show," Grande said in her apology

She had also tweeted about the surgery two days after the donut incident, but the timing still seems questionable given recent events.

The concert will now be headlined by Demi Lovato, The LA Times reports

The trailer for season two of Comedy Central's hilarious 'Review' goes to insane new heights

One of the surprise hits of Comedy Central's incredible new line-up was "Review" which premiered in 2014.

The show has a simple premise which could easily have gone wrong.

Forrest MacNeil (Andy Daly) is a critic who reviews life experiences. In season one, he tried everything from cocaine to road rage to divorce. Instead of a bunch of standalone episodes, "Review" contains an overarching plot about a man on the brink of insanity.

Season two looks like it will take Forrest even further over the edge. This trailer promises prison, glory holes, and archery gone wrong. We wouldn't be surprised if this barely scratches the surface of the trouble that Forrest gets into.

The second season of "Review" premieres on Comedy Central Thursday, July 30 at 10 p.m.

This brilliant animated comedy on Netflix has mastered the art of writing for binge-watchers

$

BoJack Horseman

Netflix has changed how we watch television in many ways.

Thanks to addicting shows like "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards" which are put out all at once, Netflix can be thanked for introducing binge-watching to the world.

While some people think binge watching might not be healthy for you, Netflix has also had an undeniably positive influence on comedy. That is most evident in its animated series "BoJack Horseman," which is almost impossible to picture on any traditional network.

"BoJack" is filled to the brim with background jokes. It is the kind of show where you have to pay attention to multiple parts of the screen at once. Sure, the dialogue and situations are all funny, but blink and you'll miss a hilarious sign or t-shirt somebody is wearing.

Netflix makes this all possible.

"Because you can watch things over and over again on Netflix, with that model of show watching, I want people to want to go back and pause and rewatch everything to catch all the background gags." Co-Producer and Production Designer Lisa Hanawalt said in an interview with Business Insider. "It's really just a way of fleshing out everything in the show."

BoJack Horseman

While another of Netflix's original comedies, "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," was originally made for network television, "BoJack Horseman" was really sculpted to accommodate binge-watching viewers.

"Yeah, I mean we really did design it for Netflix. It would be a really different show if it was on a regular TV channel." Hanawalt said.

The "Netflix model" can have its challenges. For a drama, it is hard to talk about all the twists when everybody is watching it at a different pace. However, it finally means people are watching comedies from beginning to end in order, making it better to tell a story, and easier to cram in more jokes.

Because it is streaming, "BoJack" has been able to take a lot of creative risks.

"I've seen criticisms of not just our show but of other Netflix shows as well. They're saying, 'oh, you know, if this was on a week-to-week schedule it wouldn't work. And well, it's not on a week-to-week schedule. That's the point." Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg told Business Insider.

"It's a different way to watch television, and a different way to make television. We definitely write towards that and the way we think about our season arcs and the way we kind of push things forward. My thinking is, if people are gonna watch these episodes in order, we don't have to re-establish things all the time. We don't have to repeat ourselves the way other shows would have to."

All of this allows for the kind of jokes that you might miss the first time around.

"There's no reason to kind of do the same thing twice because, you know, if people want to watch episode five again, then they can go back and watch episode five." Waksberg said.

Those who do go back and rewatch will be rewarded with even bigger laughs. There are some running jokes such as Vincent Adultman, that are pretty clear. Then there are others you might not spot right away.

In this one scene, you were likely paying attention to BoJack (Will Arnett) and Todd (Aaron Paul) fighting:

BoJack Horseman

In the background is the site of a crocodile wearing Crocs, which is just one of the show's many elaborate animal-based visual puns.

Here's another densely packed shot:

BoJack Horseman

In just this shot alone, you see Mr. Peanutbutter (Paul F. Tompkins) using a bone as a coffee stirrer. Meanwhile, there is one crew member in the background wearing a "Misprints" shirt, a play on the band Misfits.

Meanwhile, another crew member wears a shirt that says "I'm A Zelda," which refers to a debate over two characters from the show within the show called "Mr. Peanutbutter's House."

This model has allowed the writers to look at the show's story overall and make sure that it is constantly changing.

"...when we started work on season two there were jokes that we would pitch and we'd think, 'you know, that really sounds like a season one joke...season two BoJack wouldn't say that.' Things are shifting. Things are changing. I think that definitely comes from working on the Netflix model and thinking about that." Waksberg said.

The complete second season of "BoJack Horseman" will be available on Netflix Friday, July 17.

The next 'Call of Duty' brings zombies to the roaring '20s

$

Like clockwork, every fall brings a new "Call of Duty" game. This year is no different, with "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" arriving on November 6th.

What doesn't happen every year is a new "Zombies" mode for "Call of Duty" – the beloved multiplayer co-op gameplay mode that takes the trappings of a "very serious war game" and puts them in a very, very silly zombie-killing mode. That happens every other year (the last Zombies mode showed up in – you guessed it – "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2").

The reveal trailer for this year's mode is just above, and we've got some images from the 1920s-themed romp right here. For instance, here's a zombie looking angry, with glowing eyes:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies

Notice the glowing fluorescent lights behind said zombies, and his fancily appointed outfit. Looking pretty swank for a zombie, eh?

The 1920s charm doesn't end there! Just look at this dingy red light district – you can almost taste the despair:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies

Beyond just zombies, there's some form of occult action going on in "Black Ops 3." Notice the Lovecraftian skull in this room, which is otherwise an airy, spacious library. Oh, also, there's a messed up looking saw blade on the right side:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies

But let's not kid ourselves: you're still here only because you want to see some hot zombie-killing action. Well we've got that too, right here:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies

Should "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" be your particular type of jam, there's an insane collector's edition coming with a real, working refrigerator. Seriously! Just look at this thing:

If nothing else, the fridge should help sustain your required Red Bull habit while playing long hours of "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3." Don't let the zombies get to you first!

‘The Hunger Games’ director accidentally spoiled a twist in the final film

$

francis lawrence san diego comic con hunger gamesHuge spoilers ahead if you haven't read the book series:

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2” was the most anticipated panel of the day at San Diego Comic-Con.

While we’ve seen a few teasers for the film, most details have been kept under wraps.

If you’ve been following the series, you know the basic premise — Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) will continue her journey to try and take down President Snow’s (Donald Sutherland) reign of the Capitol.

However, it looks like she’ll be doing more than just that.

Director Francis Lawrence let out a little slip Thursday at Comic-Con after panel host Conan O’Brien asked him, ‘Without giving any incredible spoilers, can you tell us what we’re going to see in ‘Mockingjay - Part 2’”?

“I think you know this is where Katniss kind of gets back into action,” said Lawrence. “She was a bit sidelined in the last movie, and going through some of her own issues, but this time she’s finally going after Coi —“

Lawrence quickly stopped and corrected himself before continuing, “uh, after Snow,” but not before he was caught by a murmur of “ooooooo” from fans in the panel crowd.

Fans in the know were quick to notice that Lawrence was about to say Coin, referencing President Coin (Julianne Moore), who was introduced in the 2014’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I.”

While the character was introduced as a potential ally of Katniss, fans of the books know the character has an agenda of her own.

Tension rises between Coin and Katniss in the final book after a devastating explosion orchestrated by Coin harms one of Katniss' loved ones.

It seems like Lawrence may have been hinting toward the impending confrontation between Coin and Everdeen that takes place in the third and final novel of the “Hunger Games” trilogy.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2” is in theaters November 20, 2015.

Bill Murray took Comic-Con by storm with a series of grandiose shenanigans

Bill Murray

It's only one day into San Diego Comic-Con but it looks like the winner of this year's convention is not "Star Wars" or a Marvel property. It is Bill Murray.

Murray is known for his random public appearences, which sometimes seem more like a myth than truth. "No one will ever believe you" has become a mantra surrounding Murray.

Well, we can believe this one.

On Thursday, Murray showed up to Comic-Con and took social media by storm.

Before making his way to the panel, Murray put on a show.

And in case those Tweets seem to good to be true, there is video evidence of him walking out to "Smoke On the Water."

Murray showed that nobody knows how to interact with his fans quite like he does. He even signed a fan's head.

And he didn't go anywhere until he greeted as many of his fans as possible.

Turns out he was there to promote one of his movies, in a panel for his upcoming film "Rock the Kasbah."

Once his work was done, Murray stopped by the "Hunger Games" panel to meet one of his biggest fans, Jennifer Lawrence.

Talk about a Snapchat to make your friends jealous.

Murray's next film, "Rock the Kasbah," will be out in theaters on October 23.

The surprising real jobs of superheroes, zombies and other Comic Con fans

Costumes are everywhere you look at New York Comic Con (NYCC). Over the course of four days in October 2013, thousands of people descend on the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan dressed as their favorite television, film, comic, video game costumes, and more.

If you're not familiar with the event, you're probably wondering who dresses up in cosplay— short for costume play — and attends the convention.

We asked costumed attendees on the showroom floor what they did for a living. It's not just students dressing up and going to the Con. NYCC was filled with martial arts teachers, artists, accountants, and one guy who couldn't tell us what he did.

Pixar’s next animated short is one the studio’s most heart-melting pieces yet

Sanjays Super Team pixar short

The crowd at San Diego Comic-Con fell hard for Pixar’s upcoming short “Sanjay's Super Team,” one of the studio’s most heartwarming films yet.

The short will air before the highly anticipated animated movie “The Good Dinosaur,” which premieres in November.

Directed by 20-year Pixar veteran Sanjay Patel (who cut his teeth on 1998's "A Bug's Life" and went on to help animate “Toy Story 2,” “The Incredibles,” and the “Monsters, Inc.” movies), “Sanjay's Super Team” is a “‘mostly’ true story” based on the animator’s upbringing in an American-Indian household.

It stars a young boy, Sanjay, caught between his idolization of superhero characters and his father’s religious traditions. When he accidentally disturbs one of his father’s rituals, the boy is transported to a cosmic temple where he must band together with a troupe of Hindi gods to defeat an evil shape-shifter.

From the moment it starts, it’s clear “Sanjay's Super Team” is a personal film. The short opens with Sanjay and his father sitting on opposite sides of a living room, admiring their respective icons — Sanjay plays with a superhero action figure, his father prays.

"I worshipped my gods on the TV and he worshipped his at his shrine,” Patel told the packed room at San Diego Comic-Con.

Patel admitted that after 30 years of avoiding his parents' customs, he was first drawn to his Indian heritage when a unique rave culture swept San Francisco. "Goa trance" raves were made infamous for their illicit drug use, psychedelic imagery, and Indian trance music. Patel couldn’t escape the all-too-familiar sounds of bells and chanting throughout the Bay Area, where Pixar is headquartered.

"I pretty much rejected my parents’ culture. I wanted to be American,” Patel said. “Then rave culture happened and it was in my head all the time. [Goa trance] imagery was all over CD covers. It really [forced me to] look at my parents’ beliefs differently."

Patel began drawing deities as cutesy cartoons in his notebooks, and put the illustrations together in a book called “Little India,” which he sold at a San Diego Comic-Con roughly 10 years ago.

Fast-forward to the present, and Patel has published four books and written and directed Pixar’s 17th short film, based on his journey to embrace his cultural identity.

We won’t give away the film’s ending.

But "Sanjay's Super Team" is the cutest Oscar bait we’ve seen in a while.
