Tom Cruise is rumored to be selling even more NYC real estate— this time a gorgeous townhouse on West 12th Street in Greenwich Village, according to the Real Deal.

The home, originally built in 1860, has 8,300 square feet of space with six floors (not including a rooftop patio) and six bedrooms.

Cruise is said to have originally bought the property in 2009 with ex-wife Katie Holmes for $15 million, according to The Real Estalker. The owner's identity is masked by an LLC, but Cruise is believed to be the owner.

The Brown Harris Stevens listing of the incredible townhouse shows that the pad has five terraces, seven working fireplaces, and a built-in surround sound and humidification system. There's also an elevator, laundry room, and gym.

Porn Stars Are Enraged That They're Being Denied Loans And Bank Accounts

$

0

Chanel Preston

Chanel Preston knows not everyone approves of her chosen profession.

That's one of the risks that go with being one of the biggest stars in porn.

But she never thought it would affect her ability to open a bank account.

Preston recently opened a business account with City National Bank in Los Angeles.

When she went to deposit checks into the account days later, however, she was told it had been shut down, due to "compliance issues".

She found the manager she had originally worked with and asked what had happened. The bank, she was told, was worried about the Webcam shows she had on her site and had revoked the account.

(City National declined to comment on Preston's accusations and on whether it had any policy regarding accounts tied to the porn industry.)

Preston is hardly the only porn star who has had trouble with the banking industry. Several performers and porn insiders (who were afraid to go on the record due to possible repercussions from their banks) said they have been denied accounts from a variety of financial institutions.

(Related: Most Popular Adult Entertainment Stars)

"The people within my [local] bank have urged me to downplay the nature of my business because corporate frowns on it," said one long-time industry veteran.

The issue seems to be reaching a boiling point, though. Earlier this week, Marc Greenberg, founder of the soft porn studio MRG Entertainment, filed suit against JPMorgan Chase in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging the bank violated fair lending laws and its own policy for refusing to underwrite a loan for "moral reasons".

Greenberg says he was approached by a representative of the bank about refinancing an existing loan. But once he started the process, he says he saw repeated delays for four months. That's when he said he reached out to a JPMorgan vice president for an explanation.

The vice president "was evasive in his response to plaintiff's application status requests and finally informed plaintiff during a telephone conversation that plaintiff's loan application was refused due to 'moral reasons,' because of JPMorgan's disapproval of plaintiff's former source of income and occupation as an owner of a television production company that produced television programs that dealt with the subject of human sexuality," the complaint reads.

(MRG was sold to New Frontier Media in 2006 for $22 million.)

(Related: The Power Brokers of Porn)

Greenberg's attorneys claim they were told by the vice president that the application was denied because of the potential "reputational risk" to the firm.

The rejection, noted the suit, was confounding since Chase had long held the original deed of trust on the home, without any comment on Greenberg's career.

"JPMorgan purports to be so ashamed of nudity and human sexuality that it cannot process a refinance of a home loan of plaintiff, secured by plaintiff's house, because plaintiff's source of income six years ago included production of television programs that contained nudity and human sexuality," the suit reads.

JPMorgan Chase declined to comment on the accusations due to the pending litigation.

Preston noted she, too, has been denied a loan because of her profession—though at a different bank.

"[The loan officer] asked me 'are you affiliated with the adult entertainment industry?' When I said yes, she said 'We will not give you a loan.'," she said.

Whether the decision to deny Preston's business account or Greenberg's refinance application is discriminatory lending is a matter of debate—and, in Greenberg's case, something the courts will have to decide.

David Barr, a spokesperson for the FDIC, however, said institutions are permitted to make their own calls on who they work with to a certain degree.

"The decision to open or maintain an account is up to the individual institution," he said. "The rules are not prescriptive, which means that the bank must make its own assessment to determine the risks associated with an account and whether that account should be terminated or not opened in the first place."

And it is not uncommon for many businesses to take a moral stand about who they do business with. Indeed, some investment firms make it a point to avoid getting involved with tobacco producers or gun manufacturers because of the social issues tied to those industries.

Porn stars and adult entertainment industry insiders do note that the troubles they've experienced are tied to business—not personal—accounts. That may be because personal accounts are opened under their real names, which typically don't raise an eyebrow, while business is done under more well-known pseudonyms, which is when people take notice.

"It's kind of obvious about what I do when a young girl goes into a Valley bank with a different female name than the one on [their] driver's license," said Preston.

But such friction between people involved in the adult entertainment industry and banking institutions are likely to become more common. With the advent of the Internet, the $14 billion adult entertainment industry is undergoing a transformation.

Film and video distribution is giving way to Internet sites and Web cams. As a result, barriers to entry in the industry are being lowered and more of the industry is being based out of homes and being run through small business arrangements and partnerships, necessitating banking services.

Rihanna is suing British fast-fashion brand Topshop for $5 million for allegedly using her face on a tank top without her permission.

An anonymous source told The New York Post that Rihanna's team tried to negotiate with Topshop's owners for eight months "but they offered her $5,000 and didn't care," reports the Post.

“Rihanna’s management asked Topshop a number of times to stop selling her image and were told, ‘We do what we want.’ They buy the pictures from a photographer, but they do not pay the artist licensing fees. Unfortunately, UK law does not protect the artist," the source told The Post.

Here's the tank top in question:

Beyonce with curious hairstyle

Beyoncé is pregnant with her second child.

E! News reports multiple sources have confirmed the singer is expecting.

Earlier this week, speculation surfaced Beyoncé may be pregnant after the singer abruptly cancelled a performance in Belgium due to "dehydration and exhaustion."

In response to the cancellation, Beyoncé issued a handwritten apology to fans on her official site.

Beyoncé is currently in the middle of her Mrs. Carter Show world tour which runs through August.

Earlier, the singer's PR team banned photographers from taking pictures during her performances.

Some believed the extreme measure was in response to unflattering pictures of Beyoncé hitting the web after her Super Bowl performance.

Beyoncé welcomed her first child, Blue Ivy, with husband Jay-Z last January.

During a recent interview with "Good Morning America" the "Love on Top" singer said she wanted to have another child.

"I think my daughter needs some company. I definitely love being big sister."

The singer revealed her first pregnancy during a performance at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

Beyoncé's reps have yet to confirm the news.

He is buff, athletic, and not a bad actor.

Naturally, many of them went viral. Bubonic plague viral.

The most infectious example is a 90-second epic directed by Guy Richie for H&M. It shows an underpants-clad Beckham in pursuit of a car that had accidentally yanked off his bathrobe as it drove off.

This Guy Is Betting His Career On Creating A Massive Festival For Las Vegas

Rehan Choudhry - Vegas

Rehan Choudhry had a great job managing events for Las Vegas' hottest new hotel, the Cosmopolitan, when he decided to tour Zappos' corporate headquarters in January 2012.

It happened to be the same day the e-commerce company was massively hacked, affecting 24 million customers, and keeping its employees working around the clock.

It also happened to be "Pajama Day" at Zappos.

"I went there because I was trying to do an office re-model — which my team was pushing back on — with large, communal, creative spaces," Choudhry tells Business Insider. "They happened to be in the middle of a security breach. It was the worst day in the company’s history, and everyone is wearing their pajamas, working 72 hours straight, but they could only focus on the culture, on pajama day. The best day at any other company usually feels pretty bad, with someone trying to overtake you for a promotion. But at Zappos, on their worst day they focused on how it was pajama day."

And that made all the difference. "The event pushed me off the cliff," says Choudhry, who quit his job just a few days later. "I couldn’t be happier. The happiest day of my career was my last day of work, but I had no idea what I was going to do. Nobody was telling me what I could do."

A friend, Ryan Doherty, recommended The Beat Coffeehouse in downtown Las Vegas as a place to "find inspiration," so that's where Choudhry ended up spending a lot of his time. "I tried coffee shops on the Strip, but it's like trying to find peace in the middle of Times Square. I needed the intimacy and energy that only a neighborhood coffee shop can provide."

During those months, he started a marketing strategy company, Aurelian Marketing Group, "what I know best," he says. "I have a passion for human interaction and bringing large groups together. It could be an intimate or large festival; figuring out our how brands integrate into larger social cultures."

"The brand is meant to inspire people to take bigger risks with their lives and pursue careers and life passions that they had when they were six years old. I challenge a six-year-old to say they want to be a car dealer or cocktail waitress when they grow up."

One of his ongoing side projects was planning a huge festival for Las Vegas, called "Life Is Beautiful," along with partners Planet Entertainment and MAKTUB Marketing. Through a mutual friend, he met Tony Hsieh, who's investing $350 million to transform downtown Las Vegas, and the Zappos CEO came on board as a partner.

The "Life Is Beautiful" festival is happening in October, and Choudhry is expecting 70,000 guests — 50 % Las Vegans — making it competitive with any large festival, like Coachella or Burning Man.

But Life Is Beautiful is essentially four independent festivals — food, learning, wine, and music — in one. "Each festival could stand up on its own," he explains.

They'll have 60 to 65 bands and DJs, street art, and a TED-inspired learning series, where there will be everyone from social entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 CEOs talking about how they found success and happiness.

"With the learning series, the brand is meant to inspire people to take bigger risks with their lives and pursue careers and life passions that they had when they were six years old. I challenge a six-year-old to say they want to be a car dealer or cocktail waitress when they grow up. It’s a mantra that will inspire them back to their roots. We're specifically focusing on the arts, and the learning series is really driving that home."

And Choudhry knows all about taking big risks to succeed. His own career path has been zig-zagged. A few years before he started working at the Cosmopolitan, Choudhry was an IT consultant for the Department of Homeland Security.

"The work I did there was specifically around developing emergency response tools, designing and maintaining a system that prevented failure during 9/11. I realized I didn't like IT. So I went to [Vanderbilt] Business School in Nashville, then got recruited by Caesars in Atlantic City to help stop the bleeding in Atlantic City. There I found a passion for doing large-scale events.

"Then I got a call from the CMO from the Cosmopolitan in Vegas, and I moved there and opened an entertainment program there for two years. I left my job in April of last year."

Now he's pouring everything into making his new venture, and Life Is Beautiful, work.

"It's 99.9 percent of my life right now," he says. "It’s every minute, every dinner, social interaction, everything is all around the festival, so many people are catching onto the idea and are inspired by the idea."

What's his best advice for success? "Increase your risk tolerance. Embrace fear and uncertainty. Know that you’ll be in that state, knowing it’ll exist regardless. Now I find myself coming to work hours earlier than I used to, and staying hours later than I used to."

As for what's happening in downtown Vegas, he says, "You’ve got one of the most well-known cities in the world. There's a huge gap between what the world knows is Las Vegas and what we’re living in (downtown). We’re coming from a raw place, which is exciting. The amount of incredibly intelligent and experienced people has created a once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity."

7 Celebrities Who Love 'Star Trek' More Than You

mila kunis

"Star Trek Into Darkness" opens in theaters this weekend and diehard Trekkies won't be the only ones heading out to see the new J.J. Abrams directed film.

A few of Hollywood's biggest names attend "Star Trek" conventions, have autographed memorabilia from Leonard Nimoy, and even speak Klingon.

If you think you're a huge fan, celebrities from Maria Menounos to Mila Kunis may have you beat.

Mila Kunis has been a Trekkie since her teens.

Kunis told GQ in 2011 she has vintage "Star Trek" figures and a signed photo from Leonard Nimoy.

She's even attended a Trek conference.

"I went to the Star Trek Experience in Vegas maybe five years ago. I hung out with a bunch of fake characters inside Quark's bar. [Ed note: Quark was the name of the Ferengi bartender on DS9.] There were all these actors there pretending to be the different characters from the different shows. Yes, I loved it."

Her favorite series? "The Next Generation."

Ben Stiller sprinkles a lot of "Star Trek" references into his movies.

Not only is Stiller's production company, "Red Hour Films," a reference to an episode from the original series, but he has also thrown "Star Trek" references into his films ranging from "Tropic Thunder" to "Zoolander."

He also revealed at the 82nd Academy Awards he owns two pairs of Spock's ears signed by Leonard Nimoy.

Olivia Wilde says she's a Trekkie.

Wilde told i09 she's been a fan since young.

"I grew up as a Trekkie, which is really funny," said Wilde. "I think 'Star Trek,' they were always great female roles, but there's no reason the captain shouldn't be a woman."

Here's What 14 Fashion Icons Really Think Of Marc Jacobs

$

marc jacobs victoria beckhamMarc Jacobs has been called many things: Genius. Pioneer. Original. Exhibitionist. And, it's no wonder — the man is synonymous with style.

His show, season after season, marks the pinnacle of New York Fashion Week and points in the direction of things to come.

Even outside of show season, Marc continues to evolve and delight: In the past few months, he’s acted in his first film, worn the same women’s Prada coat as Anna Wintour (to the same event!), been named creative director of Diet Coke, and designed costumes for a virtual opera.

But, Marc is also just Marc. We spoke to 13 of his muses and longtime collaborators — from Kim Gordon to Guido Palau to tattoo artist Scott Campbell — to tap into what makes the man, the myth, the legend, tick.

Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, a Marc Jacobs muse, thinks he's fun.

"Marc has a really playful attitude and kind of screws around with the cliché image of girls and femininity. In a certain way, he doesn't take it all so seriously. He has fun with it. And, he puts on really good shows."

Model Ruby Jean Wilson is the inspiration for the Spring 2013 Marc Jacobs beauty look. She says he's fearless.

"It was Marc who put me on the map, and I will be eternally grateful for that. He is great fun to work with, and [I love] his individualism and lack of fear of taking risks."

François Nars, founder and creative director of NARS, connected with him instantly.

"We connected right away. He's fun, he’s wild, he’s a fantastic designer, and he’s full of ideas. He has a sense of freedom and always follows his instincts when it comes to fashion. He’s also incredibly creative — that’s the best part. [And] he’s always looking for the next thing — which is nice, because I am, too."

19 Obvious Reasons Why 'Star Wars' Is Better Than 'Star Trek'

$
0
0

Star Wars

I'm fully aware that writing an article about how "Star Wars" is better than "Star Trek" is flame bait. Especially with "Star Trek Into Darkness" hitting theaters this week. You understand this as well as I do.

But damn it, it's true. Last night, I caught a 9:45 p.m. IMAX 3D showing of "Star Trek Into Darkness" and it just reminded me how much more I enjoy watching the "Star Wars" movies. It kills me that I have to include Episodes I through III. Those aren't "Star Wars" movies, they're abominations. But in the spirit of fairness, I'll count them.

Even counting the newer "Star Wars" installments, the franchise is still better than the "Star Trek" universe. Fightin' words.

The irony here is that new Trek-helmer J.J. Abrams will be taking the reigns for the new "Star Wars," so this fight might dwindle in the next few years as "Star Wars" gets Abramified and lens-flared into the next decade.

So let's just enjoy the discussion for now because really, I know you get as much of a kick out of this "debate" as I do.

Here are 19 reasons why "Star Wars" is better than "Star Trek." There are more, but I have some actual work to attend to, so please feel free to sound off in the comments below.

19. Carrie Fisher in a gold bikini chained to a fat alien.

This could conceivably be higher up on the list, but the choice is obviously driven by my male brain, and the fact that my male brain was influenced by this scene when I was but a wee lad of 6 years old.

18. "Star Wars" video games put "Star Trek" games to shame.

While we may not be getting "Star Wars 1313" (RIP LucasArts), "Star Wars" has given us one of the best role-playing games ever in "Knights of the Old Republic" and more than double the game titles of any "Star Trek" adaptations.

We have no idea what EA has in store for Disney's next lineup of "Star Wars" games, but it can't be any worse than the latest attempt at a video game tie-in for "Star Trek":

"Playing Star Trek: The Game felt like playing an unfinished version of a game that, even when finished, still wouldn't be very good."

17. A star ship captain of the Enterprise doesn't know how to put sentences together or run a crew.

Who doesn't love the way William Shatner talks? "Bones ... Spock! BonesSpock! I ... can't ... believe we just got shot. I ... hope ... that this is ... over." But come on, seriously? This guy is trusted to command a star ship?

Sure, Han Solo takes some serious risks with his crew and Millenium Falcon, but Kirk is kind of a moron, new Kirk included. Leading away-crews himself with his most important staffers? Right, this is dramatic. They are the main characters, understood. But for a series that gets touted for it's realism based on science, this just takes me way out of it.

28 Incredible Things You Never Knew About How The Harry Potter Movies Were Made

Harry Potter set Diagon Alley

Warner Brothers spent 10 years in Leavesden, U.K., filming eight Harry Potter films.

The studios are massive and reveal how the movies were made using the most incredible special effects in the film industry.

Over the course of filming, five warehouses full of props were used. There was an Animal Department, A Creatures Department, a Visual and Special Effects Department, and more, which made each detail of J.K. Rowling's magical wizarding world come to life.

We visited the studios last month and learned the secrets. Here's how the producers did it.

The floating candles in the great hall were originally hundreds of real candles suspended by wires, which were digitally removed. But while the first movie was being filmed, there was a problem. The heat from the flames burned through the wires and caused candles to drop onto the tables. Afterward, all the floating candles were created digitally.

During the epic feast in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, tons of desserts covered the tables in the Great Hall. While most of it was made from painted resin, some of it was edible and the cast got to indulge.

In Harry's Gryffindor dorm room, props changed from movie to movie. Producers lined bedside tables and walls with things the characters would be interested in, like sports posters and pennants. But the beds were never upgraded. By the time the final movies were filmed, Daniel Radcliff and the other boys had to curl up in balls to keep from hanging over the edge of the bed during shoots.

Watch The Trailer For The Scathing Drama Creating A Huge Buzz In China

This week Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke‘s "A Touch of Sin" screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where it is being considered for the ”Golden Palm,” the highest prize at the festival.

The film is already creating buzz at home after the trailer was uploaded to Youku on Wednesday, the Hollywood Reporter writes.

“Judging from the trailer, it contains a lot of critical scenes based in reality that were created with no fear of the censorship system," one Weibo user commented.

Of particular note is that the film seems to be based on a number of real events in recent Chinese history.

For example, there's a 2009 case where a pedicurist killed a local official after he reportedly slapped her in the face with a wad of cash when she refused to sleep with him, and a notorious 2011 high-speed train accident that killed 40 people. Other parts of the trailer seem to be referring to the suicides at Foxconn factories.

The big question, of course, is whether a film so critical of modern China will actually be shown in the country it scrutinizes?

Right now things look hopeful, and the film is being made by partnership with a state-run film studio. In an interview with the Globe and Mail Jia seems confident, telling the reporter: “The film has been approved by the censor board and we hope it will be released in autumn.”

22 Actors Who Have Said They Hate Their Own Movies

$

Charlize TheronWe've all made professional decisions that, with the help of hindsight, we wish we could take back, and this is true even for Hollywood's finest.

Many actors' resumes are not without a few projects they wish they could erase from their work history.

Let's take a look at some of Hollywood's biggest stars and the movies they want to forget.

George Clooney and "Batman & Robin"

Joel Schumacher's contribution to the Batmanfranchise has become an ongoing joke within film circles, and George Clooney is happy to get in on the mocking, saying, "It was a difficult film to be good in. With hindsight it’s easy to look back at this and go ‘Woah, that was really shit and I was really bad in it.’"

Halle Berry and "Dark Tide"

Halle Berry isn't shy about the bombs on her resume. While on Chelsea Lately, Berry told the host, "You don't expect [a movie] to be as bad as it is sometimes. Then it comes out, and you think, 'F--k. That's what I did?'"

But it's not all bad: "Even when a movie ends up crappy, other good things can come out of it," Handler argued. "You met your fiance on a movie."

"On a s--t movie," Berry responded, referring to 2012's dreadful Dark Tide. Hilarious.

Charlize Theron and "Reindeer Games"
