Conservative Writer Becomes A Hero After Swiping Woman's Cell Phone In Theater And Throwing It Across The Room

0

Kevin Williamson

National Review columnist Kevin Williamson is so fed up with people using their cell phones during the theater-going experience that he physically removed a woman's phone from her hands and threw it across a New York theater.

Here's how it all went down.

The play was high brow "Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812"  but the audience apparently was not.

"The main offenders were two parties of women of a certain age, the sad sort with too much makeup and too-high heels, and insufficient attention span for following a two-hour musical," Williamson writes in his post "Theater Night: Vigilantes 1, Vulgarians 0."

When one particular woman "with too much makeup" refused to get off her phone after Williamson and his date had kindly asked her to turn it off, she suggested he mind his own business.

Here's what happened next, writes Williamson:

So I minded my own business by utilizing my famously feline agility to deftly snatch the phone out of her hand and toss it across the room, where it would do no more damage. She slapped me and stormed away to seek managerial succor. Eventually, I was visited by a black-suited agent of order, who asked whether he might have a word.

In a civilized world, I would have received a commendation of some sort. To the theater-going public of New York — nay, the the world – I say: “You’re welcome.”

Williamson ends his post with this funny bit: "There is talk of criminal charges. I will keep you updated."

After tweeting about the incident, Williamson has received tons of positive feedback:

Ricky Gervais On His 'Office' Paycheck: 'It’s The Gift That Keeps On Giving, Syndication'

ricky gervais

Tonight marks the end of the popular, long running NBC series "The Office."

But before Steve Carrell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fisher and the bunch entered Americans' living rooms every Thursday night for nine seasons, "The Office" was a two-season British comedy created, written, and directed by Ricky Gervais.

When the series was re-created for American audiences featuring American actors, Gervais — who remains the executive producer — says it just wasn't the same.

"It wasn’t my baby. It was my rights, so I cashed the checks," Gervais tells GQ in a new interview. "I think it was good, but I didn’t have the same emotional attachment to it. Now and again I'd watch one on a plane."

Gervais admits to the mag, "I [have made] more [money] than anything else probably I’ve ever done. It’s the gift that keeps on giving, syndication."

According to Celebrity Net Worth, the comedian is worth an estimated $80 million.

He later joked on his blog of the reported amount:

"Wow! I think there must be a leak at my accountants. They are of course spot on. I know it sounds a lot, but remember, I donate a lot of this to good causes. Now this is out, I will have to get my family a million scratch cards each for Christmas. I have decided to use the rest of the money to take over Libya. (I know I said I was going to start with Egypt but Karl said it was awful.)"

Actually, You'll Need To Watch The New 'Arrested Development' Episodes In Order

0
0

arrested development netflix

While much of the marketing of the new Arrested Development episodes has emphasized how many old jokesthey will contain, one of the most frequent used talking-point for what's new is that all 15 episodes would be interlinked in such a way that you can could watch them in any order you want.

Jason Bateman had said that there would be a "suggested" order, but explained that there was some element of freedom in choosing your preferred viewing plan, which sort of fits the Netflix binge-watching paradigm.

Well, on Wednesday creator Mitch Hurwitz squashed those plans. He tweeted in succession: "Done! Just finished the final mix last night. In two weeks Arrested Development will be yours to do with as you please. Except for 1 thing! You gotta watch them in order. Turns out I was not successful in creating a form where the setup follows the punch line." While some of Arrested Development's brilliance has often been attributed to its breaking out of the "setup followed by punchline" form, Hurwitz apparently has conceded that he hasn't figured out a way around one of the laws of comedy physics.

The new Arrested Development will still undoubtedly be different than most of what runs on TV. Each episode is still apparently dedicated to one character's perspective, which means moments in the story can recur through the episodes from varying points of view. But your binge-watching will now be simpler.

What does all this mean? Well, for one thing, with this revelation coming so late in the game, it indicates how much of a work in progress the new season has been. As recently as this Monday Portia de Rossi was on Jimmy Fallon's show telling him that you can binge watch "in any order, actually. They are all kind of standalone and depending on the order you watch them in kind of gives you a different perspective. So it's pretty cool."

We're not saying this won't work, but, listen, this is another reason to manage our hopes and expectations. No one is looking forward to the May 26 release more than we are, but relax, breathe, and watch. No matter what happens you'll always have those first three seasons.

Now back to your regularly scheduled squealing. Here's a Seamless page for the banana stand.

Kanye West Goes On Another Crazy Rant About Being A Celebrity

Kanye West

Nonsensical ranting isn't new for Kanye West.

But during a performance at the Adult Swim TV upfronts Wednesday night in New York City, the rapper aimed his anger at some new targets: the paparazzi and "Saturday Night Live."

“I’m a terrible, terrible celebrity," West confessed to the crowd, clearly sick of the media attention that comes with dating Kim Kardashian and, well, ranting about your celebrity.

“I ain’t no mother----ing celebrity. I ain’t running for office. I ain’t kissing nobody’s mother----ing babies," he continued. "I drop your baby and you sue me and s---. I’m trying to make some music that inspires people to be the best they can be. I don’t want nobody to ask nothing else of me."

He also told the crowd he’s not going to parody his scuffles with the paparazzi on this week’s “Saturday Night Live” because “it’s not a joke.”

Watch West's rant below:

Meanwhile, as West was talking about how much he hates being photographed, his baby mama Kim Kardashian posted the below blurry photo to Instagram with the caption: "My baby killin it tonight!!!!!" (He couldn't have gotten her better seats?)

Prince Harry Has Crazy Swag, And Other Observations From Yesterday's Charity Polo Match In Greenwich

0
0

Prince Harry Sentebale Polo Cup

There's something about having the British royals around that makes Americans of all ages act like it's 1964 again and the Beatles just landed.

Prince Harry's latest tour of the country was no exception. His week-long trip was marked by a seemingly endless barrage of pictures of girls crying/staring adoringly/ squealing (and so forth) from Washington D.C. to Colorado. Chris Christie looked charmed, the media went nuts, and (of course), there was an interview on Good Morning America.

The madness culminated yesterday, when Harry played in an exclusive polo match for the 3rd Annual Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Now, as you've probably figured, Greenwich doesn't do frenzy like teen girls in New Jersey do frenzy. We're talking about the hedge fund capital of the world here. The event was held at the Greenwich Polo Club, a gorgeous, sprawling piece of countryside owned by billionaire businessman Peter Brant— Land Rover and St. Regis were two of the sponsors.

And of course, the event had a cause. The Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup is a fundraiser for Sentebale, a charity Prince Harry founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in honor of their mothers. The organization benefits children that have been impacted by the AIDS crisis in southern Africa, and it's looking to expand its efforts throughout the region.

Put all that together and you've got a royal, a great cause, and the sport of kings. This, ladies and gentleman, is Greenwich's wheelhouse.

Prince Harrt playing poloOnly 400 tickets were available for this invite-only party, and they seem to have sold out in March.

And why wouldn't they — How often do Princes come around for the afternoon? The party started at 11:30 am, with guests trickling in slowly (some opting in to do the step and repeat — we did not) during a cocktail hour sponsored by Royal Salute Whisky.

It rained — no one cared.

Around 12:15 pm, the colorfully clad polo patrons started filing into a large white dining tent to await the Prince. Sometime before the gnocchi or filet mignon, he got on stage and made a speech about Sentabale.

And you know something? Prince Harry has a very welcoming demeanor. He smiles alot, he chuckles at people's jokes, he has a relaxed and confident stance. Since he's so at ease, it puts you at ease — and that means you listen.

Sentebale funds Mamohato Camps, places where kids with HIV can get educated about their status and receive the physical and psychological support they need. This is intended not only to help the kids as individuals, but also as a way to use education to stop the spread of the disease.

"Many of you may have heard this before and you're thinking, 'another African Charity,'" said Prince Harry. "But we believe the Mamohato Camps are a real game changer."

Harry's time at lunch was cut short because he had to prep for the polo match, and that takes some doing. Helmet and boots aside, if you want to play in a game of polo, you need four extremely smart, extremely fearless, well-trained horses — one for each 7 minute period (the periods are called chuckers).

And you need to know how good you are. Every polo player is given a "goal" handicap from -2 to 10. There are only a few ten goals in the world, and the two highest rated players on the field yesterday, polo stars Nacho Figueras and Malcolm Borwick, are both 6s.

Karolina Kurkova with Valentino GaravaniHarry is a 1 goal. But if you haven't spent your life leaning sideways on a saddle hitting a fairly small ball with a stick while a horse runs at full speed, that's pretty good.

Polo pros are tireless wanderers, constantly traveling with their families to places where polo is in season. (Figueras, for example, had his wife and kids with him). This match marked the beginning of polo in the New York area.

So a slightly tipsy, definitely well-dressed group of party-goers got to watch Harry lean, yell, and careen across the field. The rain stopped, the sun shined, and aside from a brief moment when Harry's teammate Michael Carrazza, a private equity CEO, suffered a minor injury, there were no physical hiccups.

And then the Sentebale team won.

The Cup was presented by former Victoria Secret model Karolina Kurkova, there was kissing and hand waving, and cheering — and then poof, Prince Harry was gone.

The party still went on though. It's not like you need a Prince to throw a good party in Greenwich.

Bret Easton Ellis Explains How He Got The Inspiration For Those Super Gruesome Scenes In 'American Psycho'

0
0

Patrick Bateman

Brett Easton Ellis, the author of "American Psycho" (the scariest book written about Wall Street) and several other must-read novels, did a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" the other day

It was a pretty good AMA and we'd recommend reading the full thing.

Here's an excerpt.  (Note: This has been lightly edited for clarity):

Reddit User: How did you write such disgusting scenes in American Psycho. How did they even get in you? Where did you find such inspiration? Especially for the rat, that was EXTREMELY F*****D UP. Also, huge fan here. American Psycho is my favorite book of yours.

Easton Ellis: I waited to write those scenes until the book was finished. Since I didn't really know how to approach them. I did a little bit of research with some kind of FBI textbook that went into super-gruesome detail about serial killers. Then just being in [Patrick Bateman's] brain for three years--it all came together. Very upsetting scenes to write.

Reddit User: What did you think of American Psycho 2?

Easton Ellis: It was a breathtaking masterpiece.

Reddit User:Music has always played a large role, in many of your works. The playlists that exist for each book - were these assembled after the fact, or do the songs in your books reflect what you were listening to while writing them?

Easton Ellis:Those playlists absolutely reflected what I was listening to at the time I was writing those books.

Reddit User: Favorite author? Besides yourself, of course.

Easton Ellis: Gustave Flaubert.

Reddit User: Could you explain the ending to American psycho to me like I'm a 5 year old?

Easton Ellis: Not really, babe.

Reddit User: Hey there, been waiting all day, and impressed you came early! I'm a huge fan of American Psycho, and was wondering how you chose what Patrick Bateman's rants were going to be about, and how you researched them. Did you pick music artists/clothing styles that you personally like, or that you think Patrick would like? Or both? Thanks for doing this!

Easton Ellis: Well, in a lot of ways Patrick's rants are about wanting to fit into a society that he doesn't believe in. That's where I was, too. At the time. So a lot of the rants came from my frustration as well. Not a lot of research into that. I didn't like any of the music Patrick liked but it was popular at the time and it seemed to reflect a certain kind of mass-taste that PB wanted to be a part of. As for clothes: yeah, I wore a suit like a lotta guys did in that period but not nearly as fashion-conscious as PB.

Reddit User:Mr. Ellis – thank you for everything you’ve done for the first amendment. You are good for America. 1) How did you come up with the magical line from Glamorama “The better you look, the more you see?” What type of research did you do for the shower scene? 2) Do you enjoy Dexter? Who would win in a murder off – Dex or Patrick Bateman? 3) Supposedly in NYC you had the season’s greatest Christmas party every year. Did you and what made them so epic?4) Edward St. Aubyn, David Mitchell or Alan Hollinghurst?

Easton Ellis: 1. I don't remember. I think it was combining a couple of ads I saw in the '90s. And then it became a mantra for Victor Ward. The research for the shower scene was an accumulation of many shower scenes or variations thereof. 2. You know what? I never really got Dexter. I know a lot of people involved with the show. And I don't want to diss it. But it seemed too high-concept and jokey for me. I think Dexter would probably quite easily do away with PB. :( 3.  Christmas parties were packed. Anyone could come. I always liked the party scene in the film Breakfast At Tiffany's: that's the vibe I wanted. 4. I have read and admired all three authors. I think they have all written excellent novels. P r o p s

Reddit User: What do you miss about the 80s?

Easton Ellis: Well, I guess on a surface level a kind of analog/Empire way of life. But, really, the '80s didn't thrill me. So: not a lot, guys.

Reddit User: How is the current novel going, and is it a sequel to American Psycho?

Easton Ellis: Not a sequel to American Psycho. Honestly: the last month or so it has gone kind of slowly. Distracted by other things that are going on. Thinking it through, making notes, deciding which way to go.

Reddit User: In your experience, what restaurant has been the most difficult to get a reservation to?

Easton Ellis: If a restaurant is "too difficult" to get into: why the f*** bother? I don't have an answer to that because if I couldn't get in somewhere I just moved on. Unlike, of course, PB.

The New 'Batman' Video Game Looks Super Realistic

batman arkham origins

The Dark Knight returns in an all new video game this fall.

The first trailer for Batman's "Arkham Origin" is here with Gotham's finest battling villain Deathstroke.

It's a really short teaser, but the graphics already look like a vast improvement from franchises previous installment, "Arkham City."

Warner Bros. announced news of the prequel game back in February.

Unlike the first two hit games, this one will be made by Warner Bros. two-year old video game startup in Montreal.

Rocksteady produced the first two installments.

Here's game synopsis:

Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline occurring several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City's most dangerous villains and assassins, the game showcases a young, raw, unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, witness identities being formed and key relationships being forged.

"Arkham Origins" comes out October 25 for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC.

The full game trailer will debut May 20th.

Check out some shots of the game:

Latest 'Pacific Rim' Shows An Epic Battle Between Aliens And Robots

7 Charts That Show Why Fox Is The Most Dominant Force In Cable News

0
0

While most people know that Fox News is a huge deal when it comes to cable news, it's remarkable how dominant the network has become compared to its cable-news rivals MSNBC and CNN

The Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism's annual State of the News Media report has exceptional charts showing the layout of the cable news battleground.

The report shows that Fox News is the clear winner among four cable networks, including HLN, for several reasons.

While CNN hemorrhages daytime viewers, Fox has steadfastly dominated daytime cable news, especially since the beginning of the Obama administration:

fox msnbc cnn

Fox News Hannity dominates cable in the primetime 9 p.m. slot, beating out MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and blowing CNN's Piers Morgan out of the water.

fox msnbc cnn

Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren also increased viewership for the network during the 10 p.m. slot between 2011 and 2012:

fox msnbc cnn

Across the board, Fox is the profit leader:

fox msnbc cnn

Fox surpassed CNN in revenue around the beginning of the 2008 presidential campaign and has posted consistent growth ever since:

fox msnbc cnn

Fox's revenue per subscriber has been rising steadily as the network demands higher rates. If you get Fox on your cable package, around a dollar per month goes to the network:

fox msnbc cnn

Fox also spends more than its competitors. Star hosts bank upwards of seven-figure salaries, exclusive deals are inked with well-paid popular commentators, and other on-air talent is notoriously well compensated:

The Odd Items 'The Office' Cast Is Taking From The Set

0
0

the office

If you're wondering what "The Office" cast is leaving behind, take a look around the place where you work.

The set of the NBC series, which ends tonight, looked like a real office. It was filled with the kinds of tchotchkes, doodles and comical junk we keep on our desks to sneak some real life into our work lives. For eight years, the TV stars who played typical workers -- passing the hours with pranks, dodging phone calls, hiding coworker crushes -- had routines like those of their characters.

They drove each morning down an industrial strip, past a plumbing emporium and wheelchair-ramp manufacturer, to the parking lot of the fake paper company where they worked. Walking to their computers, they might snag a piece of candy from the dish on Pam's -- later Erin's -- reception desk. They sat in comfy-enough swivel chairs and kept Tupperwared snacks in the same breakroom fridge we see on the show.

The office is closed now. The Van Nuys set that has impersonated Scranton's Dunder-Mifflin since 2005 will go back to being a TV studio, and with the last scene filmed and the last prank played, the mementos that cluttered and brightened the "Office" desks will be all that remains.

The stars talked to reporters during a goodbye visit to the set about which ones they planned to keep.

Ed Helms (Andy Bernard): I had my entire house remodeled to look like the bullpen. So I’m taking a lot of the stuff for that. I’ve also hired most of the cast to live there with me. I actually really want Andy’s Cornell diploma for some reason. I really like that.

Jenna Fischer (Pam Halpert): I want Pam’s watercolor that Michael bought at her art show, which is still on the wall. And the receptionist sign, even though I don’t sit there anymore.

Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin): I have my eye on a few cat figurines.

Kate Flannery (Meredith Palmer):  I actually saved a pelvis cast, so I would take my pelvis cast.

Creed Bratton (Creed): I want the bags and bags of mung beans that have been piling up in my desk.

Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute): I want Dwight’s car.

dwight car the office

Helms: We’re going to fight for Creed’s guitar.

Bratton: We are going to fight over that car. Yes, indeed, we are.

Wilson: I was saying I want to keep Dwight’s car, so I’m sure the producers will make that available for me.

Greg Daniels (co-creator): It’s worth less than the mung beans.

Kinsey: I did save a drawing that ‑‑ Oscar [Nunez] is amazing. He can draw all of us ...

Wilson: He drew a picture of me with a rhinoceros horn up my pooper. And I have it in my trailer. I think I’m going to get it framed. He really did. This is a true story.

Jeff Gundlach And Mel Gibson Were On An Elevator In Whole Foods, And What Happened Next Had Gundlach Chuckling

jeff gundlach

The legend of bond investing god Jeff Gundlach continues to grow.

After making a name for himself by accurately predicting the trajectory of interest rates, Gundlach also made successful calls on natural gas, Japanese stocks, and Apple.

After getting burglarized, he even played a critical role in tracking down his stolen goods.

All of the public success has caused his assets under management to balloon to around $60 billion.

Reuters' Samuel Forgione and Jennifer Ablan have a new interview with Gundlach. It includes a story proving the bond god's elevated status:

All of these calls have elevated Gundlach into something of a rock star, even in jaded Los Angeles where entertainment celebrities, not money managers, rule the roost.

He was in an elevator at a local Whole Foods grocery store with the actor Mel Gibson and a third person, he told Reuters. But it wasn't Gibson who caught the other person's eye, it was Gundlach.

"The guy looks around the elevator and looks at me and says: 'You're Jeffrey Gundlach,'" said Gundlach, chuckling a bit.

Parents Hated That Disney Made A Sexy Redesign For Its 'Brave' Princess

0
0

brave In Disney and Pixar's "Brave" the main character Merida doesn't care that she's a princess.

She hates wearing dresses and doing her hair. Instead, she much rather be scaling mountains, riding horses, and shooting bow and arrows.

And unlike the ten princesses before her, Merida isn't interested in boys.

There's no mistaking her from classic Disney princesses Cinderella and Snow White who need saving from a Prince Charming.

Instead, Merida has been part of Disney's push in recent years to create more independent princesses beginning with Tiana in "The Princess and the Frog" and Rapunzel in "Tangled."

So more than a few eyebrows were raised when a more slender, sparkly, and overtly sexier version of the character hit the web.

This right image shows how the Disney princess has been portrayed for her official introduction as the 11th Disney princess

disney princess merida

In response to the 2D character rendering, a number of protests hit the web.

Here's an excerpt of one on Change.org. that has received more than 214,000 supporters:

The redesign of Merida in advance of her official induction to the Disney Princess collection does a tremendous disservice to the millions of children for whom Merida is an empowering role model who speaks to girls' capacity to be change agents in the world rather than just trophies to be admired. Moreover, by making her skinnier, sexier and more mature in appearance, you are sending a message to girls that the original, realistic, teenage-appearing version of Merida is inferior; that for girls and women to have value -- to be recognized as true princesses -- they must conform to a narrow definition of beauty.

Commenters from around the world claimed the redesign lost the spunk of the fiery redhead from Pixar's film.

Here are a few of them:

"Did you not watch your own movie Disney? She hated her fancy dress!"

"I do not want to see Brave turned into a "Babe". Leave something for a girl to aspire to besides being arm candy."

"There's no need to sexualize a strong, young, active role model. Instead of making Merida fit the princess model, maybe Disney should change the princess model to fit girls like Merida."

The film's original director Brenda Chapman (she was later replaced by Mark Andrews) also found the changes to the princess "horrible." Here's what she told local paper the Marin Independent Journal:

"Disney marketing and the powers that be that allow them to do such things should be ashamed of themselves. When little girls say they like it because it's more sparkly, that's all fine and good but, subconsciously, they are soaking in the sexy 'come hither' look and the skinny aspect of the new version. It's horrible!"

Since the backlash, Disney reverted the image of Merida on the site to resemble her 3D likeness from the film.

A Disney rep told EW the intent was to phase out the new image after a few months.

Though Merida's character has since been changed back to reflect her film version, many of the Disney princesses still have more highly sexualized pictures of themselves on the site.

Here are a few of the other popular princesses who look remarkably different:

Belle has much longer, curlier brown locks.

belle beauty and the beast

Ariel has on blush and mascara.

the little mermaid

Even when she's dressed up in the film, Mulan looks ages younger than her regal counterpart.

mulan

See more of them here.

UPDATE: Disney has since released a statement regarding its Brave character saying the new look did not appear on company websites.

"We routinely use different art styles with our characters and this rendition of Merida in her party dress was a special one-time effort to commemorate her coronation."

The image of Merida in question is currently running on Target's site:

Steve Carell's Return To 'The Office' Was The Best Part Of The Finale

If you tuned into "The Office" series finale last night, you definitely got a good glimpse of Steve Carell's return as the great Michael Scott.

He didn't show up until the half hour mark and only had but three lines, but he nailed every one. (That's what she said.)

Our only complaint was that he should have had more air time.

Here are Carell's two big moments from the series finale:

Domino's Brazil Is Making DVDs That Smell Like Pizza

domino's pizza dvd

Domino Brazil is taking "smellvertising" to the next level.

The pizza chain and agency Artplan Sao Paolo is teaming up with 10 Brazilian video rental stores to turn popular DVDs — including "Argo" and "The Dark Knight" — into inedible pizzas.

DVD players essentially turn into mini-microwaves. As soon as the disks get hot when played, they start to smell like Domino's. After the DVD is ejected, special thermal ink has turned the disk into a mini pizza that reads: "Did you enjoy the movie? The next one will be even better with a hot and delicious Domino's Pizza."

Strange as this sounds, the promotion does teach a valuable lesson: There are still 10 video rental stores that exist in Brazil.

ArtPlan art director Diogo Barbosa explained to Creativity Online that "in Brazil streaming services like Netflix and iTunes are relatively new, and for people with good social conditions. Also our broadband connection isn't as fast as that used in the U.S., and because of that we still have video rental stores in your neighborhoods."

Allure magazine is feeling the heat after printing "Star Trek" actress Zoe Saldana's weight on its June cover.

“Zoe Saldana: 115 Pounds of Grit and Heartache," the headline reads.

And people did not like that.

New York mag's The Cut called it "bizarre and unnecessary," adding "several hundred pages of possibly decent editorial content, overshadowed by a stupid cover line."

Yahoo's omg! also slammed the beauty mag: "Every time we seem to be making progress in the way women are portrayed in magazines, somehow we take a step back," before concluding that "the decision to showcase Saldana's digits seems so ... unnecessary."

Saldana, on the other hand, defended the magazine's editorial decision and explained during an interview on "Today":

"I think it would have been wrong if they were lying about my weight. This is how much I weigh, it's something I can't control, it's who I am. I've always been a very thin frame, I was a ballet dancer. I don't think it was to make an issue of my weight. I think it was to say for a lightweight person, I seem to be really strong-minded."

Hollywood Life's Bonnie Fuller responded by explaining to ABC News, "I really think the editors were setting out to be complimentary. They wanted to show that a woman could be small in size, but powerful in spirit."

So after all of the back-and-forth, Allure opened up the conversation on their Facebook page, writing:

There’s been some talk around the blogosphere about the cover line for our story about Zoë Saldana, “115 Pounds of Grit and Heartache.” The girl is a powerhouse. And we were so impressed by what a tough, confident woman Saldana is (on-screen, in her action-movie roles, and off) that we wanted to capture that. But some people have said citing her weight on the cover was a mistake. Here’s your chance to sound off: Tell us what you think!"

The post currently has over 315 comments.

Some are critical of the magazine, writing "Would you have posted her weight if she had been 200 pounds??? I bet not" and "Definitely a mistake. I can tell you for a fact that many young girls to young women are going to strive to be 115 lbs; no matter what their body type."

Others were more supportive, "I don't know why people freak out over the fact that she weighs 115 lbs. Good for her. I am sure she works her ass off to maintain that weight, and she should...it contributes to her livelihood. It's part of her 'job' and the acting parts that she prefers to play. I don't see what the big deal is."

Regardless of your opinion, there's no denying the controversy will likely lead to a good bump in this month's magazine sales.

Groupon Founder Andrew Mason Says He's Seriously Recording A 7-Song 'Motivational' Album

Andrew Mason, Groupon's founder who was ousted from the CEO position three months ago, made some announcements Thursday.

He said he's lost weight, traveled, and planned to move to San Francisco. There, he'll join startup accelerator Y Combinator as a part-time partner and found a new company.

He said he's also spent some time in Los Angeles.  For the past month, Mason says he's been recording an 8-song album full of "motivational" music for new professionals.

Mason is known for pulling pranks, but he tells TechCrunch he isn't fooling around this time. He's really creating an album called "Hardly Workin'." It hasn't been released yet.

If he is indeed serious about his album, what will it sound like?

Mason studied piano at the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University. There, he played in a rock band and directed his own rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar. So, who knows?

Here's the statement Mason made yesterday about the album.

It was with this in mind that I spent a week in LA earlier this month recording Hardly Workin’, a seven song album of motivational business music targeted at people newly entering the workforce. These songs will help young people understand some of the ideas that I’ve found to be a key part of becoming a productive and effective employee. I’m really happy with the results and look forward to sharing them as soon as I figure out how to load music onto iTunes, hopefully in the next few weeks.

Here's Mason playing the piano back in 2008, before he was a billionaire.

Here's another of Mason showing off some serious dance moves. Maybe, if we're lucky, he'll produce some music videos too.

CBS Makes An Insane Amount Of Ad Dollars On DVR-ed Shows

Following CBS upfronts, CEO Les Moonves disclosed the extremely high ad dollar potential for targeting DVR viewers who watch their favorite shows up to a week after they air.

“A little less than 20% of the ad buys this time around will be for people who watch later,” Moonves said, which according to Bloomberg adds up to a whopping $570 million.

Until fairly recently, advertisers have regarded DVR viewers with disdain. Who wants to reach someone who couldn't be bothered to watch the show live, and may try to skip the commercials anyway?

And Moonves said that next year, some part of 85% of ad budgets will go to targeting people watching on DVR.

The new strategy makes sense. During the week that ended on March 10, 2013, CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" only received a 5.5 live rating among the 18-49 year-old sweet spot versus a 7.5 rating in the seven-day DVR playback.

Moonves is now fighting for DVR viewing to be counted "equally" as live viewings when Nielsen calculates audience measurements.

"Some of our hit programs literally are only watched 60 percent now live," Moonves said at the Deutsch Bank Media and Telecom conference in early March. "We have over 10 shows that add 3-4 million that are watched after the live viewing of it."

CBS has had a complex history with its attitude towards DVR viewing. The network has actively fought Dish Network's Hopper DVR, which would allow viewers to automatically skip ads using AutoHop. There are even rumors that CBS asked "Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco to delete a tweet that praised the Hopper.

Considering the potential ad money to be made by DVR-ed shows, its hardly surprising that Moonves would be vehemently anti-Hopper.
