Maya Rudolph nailed her Beyoncé impression at Tulane's graduation

Maya Rudolph gave the graduation speech for the Tulane class of 2015 on Saturday, and ended the speech with a phenomenal rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner."

Rudolph's hilarious speech culminated with an improvised version of the "National Anthem," where she even mixed in portions of Beyoncé classics.

Take a look here to see her attempt at the National Anthem:

Rudolph has a personal connection to Tulane and paid homage to her father, who was a Tulane class of 1968 graduate. She also gave a nod to her cousin, Sabrina, who's in the 2015 graduating class.

While the "Saturday Night Live" comedian's entire speech was characteristically funny, she also took the time to offer some heartfelt advice which was to, "Say yes, and create your own destiny," as she had done many years ago when she told her dad her dream was to be on "SNL."

You can listen to her entire speech here:

mad max Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron may be the leads in "Mad Max: Fury Road," but long after leaving the film you'll likely be talking about five other women.

The plot of the apocalyptic high-octane car-chase film revolves around five brides — the prized possessions of the film's villainous warlord Immortan Joe. Theron's Imperator Furiosa sets about a plan to break them free from a vicious breeding cycle as an act of vengeance on Joe.

After leaving the film, you may be left wondering the identities of the five young women all playing characters with rather extravagant, flamboyant names. Played by models and even Elvis' granddaughter, here are the wives of "Mad Max: Fury Road."

British supermodel and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, 28, plays the leader of the wives, The Splendid Angharad.

The 13 new TV shows we're most excited about

$

bi picks new shows

Of the 45 new TV offerings from the broadcast networks, we have chosen 13 series that most captured our attention.

Our decisions were made on admittedly few resources: available trailers, the talent attached, or even just a description.

But now more than ever, early buzz is necessary to cut through the cluttered TV landscape. Last year, the broadcast networks ordered 54 new series. Of those, only 19 shows survived.

"Minority Report" (Fox)

Why we're excited: Based on the blockbuster film by executive producer Steven Spielberg that starred Tom Cruise, this is the first TV show to be adapted from a Spielberg film. Plus, who didn't want to know what happened to the precogs after the program was shut down?

Stars: Stark Sands, Meagan Good, Wilmer Valderrama, Li Jun Li, Laura Regan

Expected premiere date: Mondays, fall 2015

Watch the trailer:

Height: 315px

"The Catch" (ABC)

Why we're excited: Shonda Rhimes clearly rules ABC right now, and we're not objecting. We've totally taken the Shondaland ride with "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal," and "How to Get Away With Murder." "The Catch," about a woman who professionally catches con men but gets conned herself, sounds like a new extension of the twisty, turny roller-coaster ride. And we're on board.

Stars: Mireille Enos, Alimi Ballard, Jay Hayden, Jacky Ido, Rose Rollins, and Elvy Yost

Expected premiere: Thursdays, midseason 2015

Watch the trailer:

"The Muppets" (ABC)

Why we're excited: Duh, the Muppets! Plus, this is set to parody documentary-style shows like "Modern Family" and "The Office." So we're in for a totally new take on famous characters.

Expected premiere: Tuesdays, fall 2015

Meet the amazing musicians auditioning for one of New York's most selective gigs — the subway

mta subway performer auditions 27

If you thought grumpy New Yorkers commuting home from a 10-hour workday were a tough crowd for a subway performer, try the employees of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

More than 70 soloists and ensembles auditioned in Grand Central Terminal on Tuesday for the chance to join MTA's revered Music Under New York program. Each year, the group welcomes 20 to 25 musicians into its family, and then facilitates performances for the undiscovered talent in designated areas across New York City's subway system.

While busking isn't entirely illegal, admission to the MTA's program offers peace of mind. Section 1050.6 (c) of the New York City Transit Rules of Conduct states that artists may perform and even collect donations inside transit facilities, but you may only perform in designated areas, you may not obstruct traffic, and even if you follow the MTA's rules, you could end up like this guy, who was reportedly wrongfully arrested for singing when acting within his rights.

Music Under New York provides a stable source of gigs, authority, a little bit of cash, and, most importantly, exposure. And while it's not the quickest path to stardom, more than 200 applicants submitted audition tapes to the MTA this year. We spoke with a few artists to find out what busking means to them.

mta subway performer auditions 20

By 12:30 p.m., a dozen performers formed a line around the panel, which included fellow musicians, industry insiders, and MTA station operations managers. Each group received four to five minutes to wow the judges.

Stiletta, an all-female dance and a cappella group, was first up in the afternoon session.

Artistic director Judy Minkoff says she scouted local talent for the group, and was lucky enough to recruit the third best female beat boxer in the world, MC Beats. The group uses no audio equipment in their performances.

Minkoff describes the ability to make people get out of their seats and dance as her source of joy.

Other ensembles, like French raggae and jazz group The Blue Dahlia, seemed to bring all the instruments they could carry.

The band decided to audition for Music Under New York when some successful local groups spoke highly of the program. Drummer Chris Hansen says amplification is the biggest challenge in subway busking; being able to perform in the designated areas, away from the noisy train cars, would be a huge advantage.

mta subway performer auditions 7

Jill Sargeant, a 23-year-old folk singer from Astoria, Queens, got hooked on busking when she noticed how people altered their behaviors around her. "In this city, people try not to make connections with each other. You avoid eye contact and touching," Sargeant explained. "But when I'm busking, people will smile at me. They'll come talk to me. It feels like a community when there is live music."

She hopes to be accepted into the program so that she can play without interference in the future. "I've been testing the waters of street performing and busking," Sargeant said. "After being escorted off The High Line a few times, this really appealed to me."

mta subway performer auditions 13

Jazz vocalist Frank Senior owns a newsstand on 42nd Street and 5th Avenue, not far from Grand Central Terminal. But he auditioned Tuesday because music is his one true love.

"I know how I feel when I hear a great performance," Senior said. "[Busking] passes along a real positive vibe through music." His service dog, a German Shepherd, sits at his feet during all performances and takes some credit for spreading the joy.

mta subway performer auditions 18

Von Middleton, who goes by a stage name, has been writing original songs since he was nine years old. He works as a singer full-time, booking gigs at birthday parties, graduations, and local clubs. In 2014, he nearly set a Guinness World Record for most times performing the national anthem in a year.

But for Middleton, a third-generation Brooklynite, the MTA's Music Under New York program is the tops.

"I would be so proud, because I'm from New York," Middleton said, "just to have that stamp of approval. It shows that I have talent and that people appreciate my talent. There's no greater feeling."

Nintendo just hired a guy named Bowser as VP of sales

Nintendo of America seriously just hired Bowser. Can companies really hire turtle-like dictators with serial kidnapping tendencies?

Okay, okay – Nintendo says it hired Doug Bowser– a human, supposedly – and he's serving as the "Super Mario" maker's new vice president of sales. Nintendo claims that Bowser has "no relation to the King Koopa and Mario’s longtime nemesis," but we have our doubts.

Here's a picture of Doug Bowser – or as we're calling it, EXHIBIT ONE:

Doug Bowser Nintendo

Looks like a nice enough guy, right? More importantly, there's no clear indication of a spiky shell on his back or a proclivity for antagonizing plumbers. Here's how Doug Bowser looks next to the definitely-not-related villain also named Bowser.

Let's call this EXHIBIT TWO:

Doug Bowser and Bowser Bowser

Pretty different looking, we'll give Nintendo that. But what happens when you zoom and enhance this photo?

We give you EXHIBIT THREE:

Doug Bowser nintendo

What's that lurking just over Bowser's shoulder? Could it be?

Doug Bowser Nintendo

It is! It's Bowser Jr., of  "Super Mario Bros." fame – the goofy progeny of the King Koopa, Bowser. You can't fool us with your thinly-veiled ruse!

Bowser Jr.

Clearly this "Doug" Bowser is just a front for Bowser Jr. and the rest of the Koopalings to take over the world. Clearly this isn't just a coincidental last name. Clearly.

As people should be, they are freaking out.

The topic is even trending on Twitter in the US:

Jimmy Kimmel gave the best, teary tribute to his idol David Letterman

Jimmy KimmelJimmy Kimmel has had a lifelong obsession with David Letterman.

In honor of Letterman's final show airing Wednesday night, Kimmel took the opportunity to address his idol's departure during his Tuesday night monologue.

Usually full of jokes, Kimmel got serious as began to explain what Letterman means to him.

"I wanted to be an artist when I was a kid; I loved to draw. And every night after my parents went to bed, I would sit at my desk in my room and I would draw until it was very late," Kimmel explained. "And while I was doing that, I would watch a television show that is very important to me; it was called 'Late Night with David Letterman.'"

Bill Murray David LettermanKimmel continued: "And even though it looked like every other talk show, it wasn't; it was weird. It was totally original, primarily because the host of the show  who a lot of the time seemed embarrassed to even be there, he did not seem like he was a part of show business  he was uncomfortable; he never pretended to be excited, and his way of saying things was so subtle that a lot of the times people he was saying things to didn't know he was joking."

David Letterman Bette Davis"I started drawing pictures of Dave on my textbooks in school. When I turned 16, my mother baked me a 'Late Night with David Letterman cake,'" said Kimmel. "You can see I'm wearing a David Letterman letterman jacket."

Jimmy Kimmel David Letterman"My first car, I went to the DMV and got a 'L8 Nite' vanity plate."

Jimmy Kimmel David Letterman"We had no VCR so I'd have 'Late Night' viewing parties at my house. My friends, who also loved the show, would come over at midnight while my parents were asleep. They would bring soda and we would watch the show."

David Letterman"Looking back," he joked, "I now realize why none of the girls in school wanted to have sex with me."

"I watched the show every night and little did I know that many years and many pounds later that watching the show was a great education for me," Kimmel explained while getting emotional.

Jimmy Kimmel"I learned almost nothing in college, but watching 'Late Night,' not only did I learn how to do everything from Dave, the reason I have this show is because the executives at ABC saw me when I was a guest on Dave's show and hired me to host this show. So I want to thank Dave, and his writers, and producers."

JImmy Kimmel"Tomorrow night is Letterman's farewell show and I'd like it if you watched that instead of our show," urged Kimmel. "We are going to have a show on tomorrow night, but please do not watch it, especially if you're a young person who doesn't understand what all the fuss is about."

"Dave is the best and you should see him," Kimmel said while tearing up.

JIMMY KIMMEL GIF
Kimmel then explained that he wanted to show his audience "one of my favorite segments of the show," which was "a parody of the after-school specials they would run in the '70s and '80s."

Kimmel then ran an old "Late Night" clip in which Letterman very ironically comforts a little boy named Jimmy about the end of the show.

"Jimmy, I've been looking all over for you," Letterman says in the old video bit. "I know how you feel, hurt at first, but believe me, you're going to get over it. Jimmy, just because the show is canceled doesn't mean it goes away forever. It can live on through reruns and syndication."

JIMMY KIMMEL LETTERMAN GIF
The irony was not lost on Kimmel, who told his audience, "I think this sums up how I feel this week, almost supernaturally well."

Wonder no more. Someone — we assume on the agency side, but we have no idea who (and we haven't been following it for long enough to send the owner of the blog a "fanmail," according to Tumblr) — has created the "Mad Men Integrated" Tumblr. It's a nod to agencies that now have to have digital skills under their belt, as well as the big Don Draper creative ideas.

Why HBO's documentary about the Cannibal Cop case is filled with dark humor

Thought Crimes Erin Carr Andrew Coffman

For a documentary that tackles the justice system and the frightening future of the internet head on, "Thought Crimes" has its funny moments.

HBO recently debuted the documentary following Gilberto Valle, a former NYPD officer who was accused of using an online chat room to plot a scheme to kidnap, rape, and eat dozens of women. His subsequent trial became a media phenomenon. He was dubbed "Cannibal Cop."

Upon first viewing, some of the laughter in an otherwise disturbing documentary might seem like an accident. However, director Erin Lee Carr told Business Insider she wanted to bring some light moments to an otherwise troubling subject matter.

"... People were really terrified but then kind of a couple weeks later the tabloids were kind of making a joke about it because there was something sort of inherently funny about this sort of dark subject matter." Carr told Business Insider.

After Valle's arrest, he became something of a media punchline. The film highlights many of the newspaper covers he graced.

Thought Crimes New York Post

Cannibal Cop New York Post

Scenes which elicited a lot of uncomfortable laughter at a Tribeca Film Festival screening I attended were ones that showed Valle in his house cooking. Carr noticed that, too. Nearly every time they're in house, Valle can be seen cooking up a new meal.

When asked about the number of cooking scenes, Carr explained they had a lot of that footage to work with.

"Everyone is so kind of obsessed about [the food shots] and I understand the edits kind of make it seem like we're being playful," Carr said. "I swear to you, being under house arrest he couldn't even go into his backyard. We could watch television. We could talk. Or we could eat food."Thought Crimes Gilberto Valle

All of that b-roll of Valle cooking and eating led to some surprisingly hilarious, seamless transitions like this one:

Thought Crimes GIFComedy can be a way to remove the tension from a situation. Carr says editor Andrew Coffman saw the comedy potential in certain parts of the film telling her "we can't have this be a dark internet movie the entire 82 minutes."

Carr hopes these scenes could serve a bigger purpose.

"I hoped that the cooking shots would normalize his behavior a bit." Carr said. "After the first couple times it's like 'it's scary! It's uncomfortable!' But that's something...it was kind of a guy in his kitchen and I think so many people took it all sorts of different ways."

New Fall TV Shows rankings amobee main

This could be the biggest fall for television remakes, revivals and spinoffs. That could just be what the major networks really needed to cut through today's very dense TV landscape, because it's working.

Business Insider partnered with Amobee Brand Intelligence— a company that provides marketing insight and measures real-time content consumption across the internet, social, and mobile — to find out which new TV shows are actually breaking through the clutter and getting the most attention.

During the process, Amobee discovered that out of the 10 upcoming fall TV series that generated the most consumption between April 19-May 19, six were based on existing franchises. A whopping 88% of the digital consumption — a measure of how often a term/brand is actually “seen” online (600,000+ websites including mobile) and social media — around those 10 shows were shows based on existing franchises.

supergirl flying CBSCBS's "Supergirl" remake soared above next season's new shows, receiving the most digital consumption and thus setting the bar against which the other shows are compared.

The CW's "Arrow"-"Flash" spinoff "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" came in second at 69% of "Supergirl's" digital consumption.

In the third position, CBS's sequel to Bradley Cooper film "Limitless" came in at 51%.

It was followed by ABC's "The Muppets" revival in fourth place at 31%.

The first original series to break through is Fox's Ryan Murphy series "Scream Queens," which rounds out the Top 5 with 16%.

David Letterman sent this witty rejection letter to Jimmy Kimmel in 2002

Jimmy Kimmel David Letterman

On Wednesday, David Letterman will host the "Late Show" for the very last time.

Out of respect for his idol, Jimmy Kimmel will air a rerun of his competing late-night show.

"I have too much respect for Dave to do anything that would distract viewers from watching his final show," Kimmel recently told The New York Times. "Plus, I’ll probably be crying all day, which makes it hard to work."

Indeed, Kimmel did shed a few tears during his tribute to the veteran late-night host on Tuesday. But Kimmel's obsession with Letterman goes way back.

Kimmel, 47, has idolized Letterman, 68, since the younger late-night host was a quirky kid growing up in Vegas.

"His show was just so weird and different," Kimmel told Rolling Stone back in 2013. "I'd never seen anything like it. I didn't know anyone who had a sense of humor like that."

Kimmel has often joked that the only reason he went into show business was to be friends with Letterman — and wondered why anyone would watch his show instead of Letterman’s.

So when Kimmel was coming off four years as cohost of Comedy Central’s “The Man Show” and about to debut "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on ABC in 2002, naturally he reached out to Letterman to be a guest on the show’s premiere episode.

Letterman’s typed response — on personal stationery  today sits framed on Kimmel’s desk in his studio office, alongside a photo of his late grandparents and a picture of himself covered in whipped cream after popping a fictional zit on Jon Stewart’s forehead.

This is what the letter said. It's from September 23, 2002, and was uncovered by New York Magazine.

Dear Jimmy,

Thanks for asking me to appear on your premiere. Unfortunately, I will be out of the country on business. I’m sure the program will be a success regardless.

Sincerely,

Dave

"His response is hilarious," Kimmel told New York Magazine. "He’s not out of the country on business. He knows you know he’s not out of the country on business and just the words 'on business' — it really makes it a perfect letter for me."

Eleven years later, the two aren’t exactly best buddies. But Letterman did appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for the first time in 2012, when the LA-based show broadcast out of Brooklyn after Hurricane Sandy.

Jimmy Kimmel David LettermanLetterman's appearance gave Kimmel his biggest Wednesday audience in the show's history — about 2.4 million viewers.

Leading up to the visit, Kimmel said he was "terrified" to interview Letterman and tried to justify it by saying, "I’m sure for him it’s nothing more than a nuisance, that he’s just doing it to be nice."

But Letterman was a gracious guest as Kimmel showed him photos of his "Late Night"-themed 18th-birthday cake:

Jimmy Kimmel David LettermanLetterman responded by telling his No. 1 fan, "I’ll be honest with you, it was troubling. I kept saying to people, 'Why is he sucking up to me?' ... When I was persuaded that there was some measure of stability here, then I really realized that it was genuine and I couldn’t appreciate it more."

Letterman added, "In show business, one of the precepts is you're not really supposed to be nice to people, especially if you have the same occupation as another person. Jimmy has broken that precept and has been nothing but generous and courteous and kind to me."

Kimmel told Rolling Stone that, as a kid, he felt like Letterman was doing his show "specifically for [him]." And now, to return the favor, Kimmel won't do his show on Wednesday, specifically for Letterman.

On Tuesday, Kimmel gave an emotional farewell tribute to Letterman, urging viewers to watch Dave's final show on Wednesday instead of his own.

Through tears, Kimmel explained: "Dave is the best and you should see him."

There are shoe police at the Cannes Film Festival — and they're drunk with power

The talk of the Cannes Film Festival is not the films, nor the cascading red carpet gowns, but the shoes.

At the premiere of "Carol," starring Cate Blanchett, women on the red carpet were turned away from the theater door because they were wearing flats instead of high heels.

Even more egregious, an amputee was rebuffed at Gus Van Sant's "Sea of Trees" screening.

Valerie Richter, a film producer who is missing part of her left foot, told BBC 5 that red-carpet officials looked at her flat shoes and said, "No, no, this won't work, you can't get in like this." She was later allowed in but said that many of her colleagues were not.

"No, no, this won't work, you can't get in like this.

And then there's art dealer Larry Gagosian, who wore a tuxedo and "stylish" sneakers, also a no-fly footwear choice at Cannes. Lucky for Gagosian, a call to pal Harvey Weinstein, who produced the film Gagosian was there to see, cleared the way.

Asif Kapadia, the director of the new Amy Winehouse documentary, had to flex his connections, too: His wife's shoes didn't make the initial cut but she was eventually let in. Kapadia was so perturbed that he took to Twitter to confirm that women in flats were, indeed, being shut out.

The real question here is whether the high-heel (and sneaker) rule is actually a rule or just evidence that Cannes has some sort of rogue shoe-police brigade. Yesterday, Screen Daily wrote that, yes, the festival had confirmed that flats are a red-carpet dress-code violation. But today the website posted the following statement from the festival's press office.

Regarding the dress code for the red carpet screenings, rules have not changed throughout the years (Tuxedo, formal dress for Gala screenings) and there is no specific mention about the height of the women’s heels as well as for men’s. Thus, in order to make sure that this rule is respected, the festival’s hosts and hostesses were reminded of it.

So it seems flats are allowed at Cannes. And with the festival culminating this Sunday, there's plenty of time for actresses and goers to abandon their stilletos and see where it gets them.

One of the best parts of "Mad Max: Fury Road," aside from the visuals and the non-stop car action, is definitely the man playing a solo rock concert from a flamethrower guitar as he hangs midair from a speeding vehicle.

Even before "Fury Road" was released in theaters, the guitar man was one of the most exciting parts of the film's trailers.

People on Twitter are going crazy over him, and he's even managing to steal some of the spotlight away from the leads Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron:

Who's the guy behind the mystery man?

According to the film's production notes, he's called "The Doof Warrior," and is described as a "little drummer boy" for the antagonists.

In real life, he's known as the multi-talented musician and actor iOTA, who's real name is Sean Hape. He formed his first band at age 16 and moved out of home at age 17 to form the hard rock band Loose Goose.

It is no surprise iOTA was hired to play a guitarist, given that he is a well-known, multi-talented musician from director George Miller's home country of Australia.

Here is a sample of one of his songs from the 1999 album "The Hip Bone Connection":

And here he is performing in Melbourne:

In addition, iOTA has five albums under his belt. Before his music and film careers kicked off, iOTA earned much acclaim in theater.

His musical background came in handy when playing the Doof Warrior. According to the film's production notes the artist wrote and recorded war themes to play on the real-working flamethrower guitar.

iOTA might not have made his film debut until 2013 as orchestra leader in "The Great Gatsby," but his acting career goes back much further.

He played the lead roles in Australian productions "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," and "Smoke and Mirrors" (the last one which he co-created). His newest rock musical, "B-Girl," premieres next month at the world famous Sydney Opera House

Mad Max Guitar Guy Smoke and MirrorsHe hasn't been asked to play Hedwig in Broadway's smash hit revival yet, but here he is playing the character in Sydney back in 2006:

Starring in a "Mad Max" movie was a dream of his, so if this was his last film role ever, he probably wouldn't complain.

“It was just a dream come true,” iOTA told BuzzFeed in an interview. “I’m such a fan of the films and I just dreamed about it for so long. As a kid, I was always thinking, One day, I could be in Mad Max. It was just the time of my life.”

But if he is asked to star in one of the upcoming sequels, his answer will be "of course."
