WWE put on its best show ever — and it wasn't even televised

John Cena Rusev WWE

The WWE made a high-profile pit stop on the Road to Wrestlemania Friday night when it invaded Madison Square Garden for what is known as a "house show."

A house show is a live WWE event that isn't broadcast on television. The performers provide entertainment solely for those who happen to be "in the house."

And last night's show serves as proof that sometimes the best WWE events aren't the ones you see on TV. Unhindered by commercial breaks and taped segments, WWE house shows give the performers a chance to take their time and show off their true range of talents.

Last night, the MSG crowd saw that range of talent and a whole lot more, brother.

Hulk Hogan WWE 3

The highlight of the night was an elaborate tribute to Hulk Hogan, who was honored by a cavalcade of pro-wrestling legends. Famed WWE manager Jimmy Hart (a.k.a. "The Mouth of the South") kicked off the proceedings, followed by an appearance by two of Hogan's most famous associates from his days in the New World Order faction: Scott Hall and Kevin Nash.

Hulk Hogan Scott Hall Kevin Nash
But before they could continue, the Garden shook with the strains of "Also Sprach Zarathustra," which meant that the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair was in the house. For the rest of the night, you couldn't go more than a few seconds without hearing a fan yell out "Woooooooo," which is Flair's famous catchphrase.

Hulk Hogan 2 WWE
After Flair delivered an emotional tribute to Hulk Hogan, Triple H emerged with a Madison Square Garden executive who, after being savagely booed, announced that the Garden would honor Hogan's legacy by installing an honorary banner in the rafters.

Hulk Hogan Banner
I speculated that one of the bad guys, otherwise known as "heels," might interrupt the ceremony and disrespect Hogan and company, but the segment remained completely free of scripted angles. Even Triple H, who currently performs as one of the company's top heels, broke character and showed genuine appreciation for Hogan. This is what's known as a "shoot," which occurs when performers break character.

Seth Rollins WWE
However, the "shooting" ended with the Hulk Hogan tribute. The rest of the night was filled with exciting matches featuring the roster's A-list talent. Top draws like John Cena, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, and Seth Rollins filled the card, which entertained the crowd for more than three hours.

Speaking of Rollins, I'd previously assumed that we might see "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart at the event. Rollins and Stewart are embroiled in a kayfabe feud, but alas he did not show. However, Stewart did suggest he might be in attendance at the next taping of "Monday Night Raw" this Monday in Newark, New Jersey.

Superstars like Chris Jericho have often vocalized their preference for house shows over televised events because of the freedom the performers have to try out more exciting maneuvers and "high spots" without the time constraints of live TV.

Last night provided hard evidence as to why the performers feel this way. TV tapings may have more prestige and visibility, but house shows are almost always guaranteed to be more fun.

Here's the full card from the event:

Bad News Barrett defeated Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler in a triple threat match for the Intercontinental Championship.

Tag Team Champions Tyson Kidd and Cesaro defeated New Day.

Divas Champion Nikki Bella defeated Paige.

Chris Jericho defeated Luke Harper.

John Cena defeated US Champion Rusev via disqualification.

R-Truth defeated Fandango.

Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt.

In the main event, Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns defeated Seth Rollins and Kane.

These celebrities were Photoshopped to look thicker rather than slimmed down

Cobie Smulders 'Big Girl, you are beautiful'

Spanish artist David Lopera, 20, has attracted the eyes of the internet with a long-running series of digitally altered celebrity pics.

But instead of slimming women down — as Photoshop is overwhelmingly used for — Lopera uses the software to make them look heavier.

Beyond serving as fodder for tabloids asking "Does Rita Ora look better bigger?" Lopera's images have also sparked a conversation over whether they advance or undermine the body-positivity movement.

Lopera's first "makeover" image manipulated the album cover of Katy Perry's 2008 opus "One of the Boys":

Katy PerryThe New York Daily News reports that the image quickly went viral after Lopera posted it on his deviantart page, where the rest of his art can still be found. Lopera, a computer engineer, has since been flooded with requests to give specific stars the treatment.

"Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kim Kardashian are some of the most popular requests I get," he told the Daily Mail.

In an email to Business Insider, Lopera wrote that about 5% of his work was done on commission.

But outside of Lopera's client base, some have expressed disapproval of his methods, if not of his goal to challenge beauty standards.

Over at the feminist blog Bustle, Marie Southard Ospina opined that Lopera's "chosen mode of delivering this representation is resulting in even more manipulation of women’s bodies."

Karen Gillan David Lopera fat photoshopOspina added that "with all the plus-size and fat positive bloggers, models, and activists posting real imagery meant to beat stigmatization, it seems unnecessary and almost disrespectful to turn to the altering of female celebrities in order to prove a point about body positivity."

Michelle Keegan fat photoshopShould Lopera's intentions be taken into consideration when judging the value of his say in the conversation? The Daily Mail thought it worth mentioning that Lopera was in a relationship with a "plump" woman himself.

Some of his comments reflect a noble goal: He told the Daily News that he hoped to "change people's mind about beauty standards."

Either way, Lopera will most likely continue in his work. He told the Daily News that he hoped to go full time with his use of Photoshop.

Astronaut gives a heart-warming send off to Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy

spock live long and prosperLeonard Nimoy, famous for his role as Spock — the infallibly logical character in the Star Trek TV series and movies — died on February 27, and astronaut Terry Virts gave the beloved actor the perfect send off.

Virts has been living on board the International Space Station since September, 2014 and he snapped a photo of himself giving a Vulcan salute when the ISS passed over Boston — the city in which Nimoy was born.

The Vulcans are a race in Star Trek that Spock's father belonged to. Nimoy himself actually came up with the idea for the Vulcan salute, and its become the most iconic symbol of the show. The salute means "Live long and prosper."

Virts took this photo from the largest window on the ISS called the cupola:

Star Trek originally aired in the 1960s just a few years before NASA put Neil Armstrong on the moon. Ever since then, Star Trek has been inspiring people to pursue science and space exploration with it's famous message that space is the "final frontier."

Nimoy received a public outreach award in 2010 from the Space Foundation for his role as Spock.

NASA gave its own tribute to Nimoy when the organization tweeted a photo from 1976 that showed the space shuttle Enterprise, named after the famous starship from Star Trek.

This is the main reason video games are so much better today than they were years ago

destiny ship sparrowBungie’s “Destiny” was the most anticipated game of last year, but it fell short of its immense expectations. But, critics might need to visit their initial reviews.

After several updates, including the biggest one arriving this week in the 1.1.1 patch, Destiny is now a much different game than it was when it launched in September.

Not only is the game significantly better, it might be one of the best games I’ve ever played. It’s heart-pounding and utterly addicting. And the reason “Destiny” is so much better is why I’m incredibly optimistic for the future for all video games.

Think back a decade or two — maybe you had a Nintendo 64, or a PlayStation, or an Xbox. When you bought a new game, unless it was a physically defective disc or cartridge, any bugs or glitches in the game were there forever. There were no over-the-air updates, no downloadable content, and no bug fixes.

These days, it’s a much different story. Since mobile games have come along, offering the ability to push updates to all players at once, game makers now realize their games aren't set in stone anymore. And Bungie’s “Destiny” is the best example I’ve seen yet of this concept coming to living room games.

“Destiny” wasn’t a bad game when I first played it — when I first dove in, I played the game for five straight hours, proclaiming it was one of the best games I’d ever played. But my love affair ended quickly: I started noticing more omissions, issues, and inconsistencies. At times, due to the game’s mechanics, I felt like I’d been cheated, though it was no fault of my own. It wasn't fun.

But then, around early January, I returned to "Destiny" after urging from my older brother, who insisted the game had changed for the better after the latest update with new content and a few fixes.

Since that time, I've paid attention to Bungie's weekly blog posts, and the Reddit community's "DestinyTheGame" subreddit, where people share their exploits, their foibles, complaints, and ideas. Thanks to all of these resources, Bungie’s developer team has been keenly aware of the game’s issues, and as a result, they’ve been able to update “Destiny” to accommodate fans’ wishes and alleviate some of the game’s biggest gripes through game updates.

And you know what? This system really works.

Most “Destiny” players on Reddit, for instance, have been singing Bungie’s praises this week after the company’s major 1.1.1 patch, which balanced out weapons and even introduced a vault system that lets you easily exchange gear between all of your characters without even opening the game — you can do it all on a smartphone or computer.

It’s easily one of the game’s most useful features, and it didn’t exist before this past Wednesday.

Personally, I’ve never been so addicted to a game as I am with “Destiny.” It’s not a perfect game, not just yet, but I know it has the potential to be — regular updates and blog posts from the company constantly keep the game feeling fresh, and there's a whole timetable for new content on the horizon.

“Destiny” proves this isn’t the age of static video games anymore: Like mobile game makers, console game developers can now actually have a say in how their games evolve over time, to attract new users and accommodate veteran players. Hopefully other game makers follow Bungie’s lead in this regard.

'Shark Tank' investor Kevin O'Leary says this emotional pitch is the reason the show won an Emmy

farmer lede tree t-pee

In six seasons of "Shark Tank," Kevin O'Leary has seen hundreds of presentations from entrepreneurs. One from season five, however, stands out as the most emotional, and he even credits the pitch as the reason why the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Structured Reality Program in 2014.

Johnny Georges of Arcadia, Florida, presented the Tree T-PEE, a water conservation device for farmers that he developed with his late father in 1984.

The Sharks were both shocked and moved by Georges' genuine desire to selflessly help other farmers with their livelihood, a mission he credits to his father.

Ultimately, guest investor John Paul DeJoria — the billionaire cofounder of John Paul Mitchell Systems and Patrón Tequila — decided that Georges was too good to pass up, and they made a deal. Before leaving the Tank, Georges explained the influence his father had on his life, and the tears started flowing for everyone in the room.

Here's a breakdown of the pitch.

Johnny Georges worked for his father Rick in the citrus and irrigation industries for over 20 years. In 1984, Georges and his dad developed a plastic, semi-conical device to place around tree roots to block frost and conserve water, and thus energy.

Georges asks for $150,000 in return for 20% of his company. His main goal for the company is to promote water conservation.

In 2009, the University of Florida discovered that trees with T-PEEs used 93% "less water, fertilizer, electricity, and fuel," Foodtank reports.

The physics of Mario World show the game has a fundamental flaw

$

mario

Nintendo's Mario series is the best-selling video game franchise in history. And with moves like Mario's, it's no mystery why so many people enjoy navigating the little Italian plumber through his fantasy world of princesses, castles, and magical mushrooms. But there's a fundamental flaw in the game: Based on what we know about our universe, Mario World physically couldn't exist.

This tiny yet surprising flaw in the game was recently discovered by the PBS video series Space Time, which used some simple math and basic physics to determine which kind of planet Mario lives on.

How does Mario jump so high?

You'll notice in the GIF below that Mario has some very impressive jumping skills:

marioAt first you might think Mario can jump so high because he is on a planet that is smaller than Earth and, therefore, has weaker gravity.

The Moon, for example, has about one-sixth Earth's gravity, which means you can jump six times higher on the Moon than on Earth using the same leg power. But that's not the full story.

The crucial detail is not how high Mario jumps but how fast he falls.

mariosAlthough you can jump six times higher on the Moon, it would take six times as long to fall back to the ground as it would on Earth. If Mario fell that slowly, it would make for some pretty boring gameplay.

moonBecause Mario moves relatively quickly through the air, he must be on a planet that has pretty strong gravity. You can easily calculate how strong the gravity in Mario World is with two simple parameters:

  • How high Mario jumps.
  • How long it takes Mario to fall to the ground.

By crudely measuring these factors, Gabe from Space Time determined that in the 1990 game "Super Mario World," Mario jumps about 2 1/4 times his own height and takes approximately 0.3 seconds to fall to the ground.

roller coasterAfter crunching the numbers, Gabe calculates that Mario is on a world whose gravity is eight times as strong as Earth's. Keep in mind that most humans can't withstand anything stronger than five times Earth's gravity before passing out.

To put this into better perspective: If you weigh 150 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 1,200 pounds on Mario's planet!

So how does Mario jump so high with all of those pounds weighing him down?

Pure leg strength, Gabe concludes. He must do a lot of dead lifts off-screen.

In fact, if Mario were on Earth, his strength would allow him to jump higher than 90 feet. To achieve that kind of height, he would have a liftoff speed of more than 50 mph!

Mario's jumping ability does slightly vary between different games, so gravity's force will also vary. But in general people have found that this value is between five and 10 times as strong as Earth's gravity — stronger than anything we experience on a daily basis. You might reach five g's when you're speeding through a 360-degree loop on a roller coaster.

Which planet is Mario's?

No planet in our solar system even comes close to the kind of gravity on Mario's many worlds. Jupiter, the largest planet orbiting our sun, has about 2 1/2 times Earth's gravity. So if you weighed 150 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 375 pounds on Jupiter. That's not even close to the gravity on Mario World.

exoplanetThough Mario's planet is not in our solar system, could it be outside of it, in another star system far from Earth? Because of our search for planets outside our solar system, we know there are plenty of weird planets out there. But are they weird enough?

Through NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, humans have found more than 1,800 planets orbiting stars other than the sun, thousands of light years from Earth. Could one of them have conditions similar to those on Mario World?

First, Mario clearly lives on a rocky planet with an atmosphere similar to Earth's. But its gravity is also eight times as strong as Earth's — is such a planet possible?

Unfortunately for Mario, a planet like this doesn't seem likely to exist in our universe because of how we think large planets form. To have a lot of gravity a planet must have a lot of mass, and the planets that are even close to being large enough seem to be gas giants, like Jupiter and Saturn, with no ground to speak of.

The known planet with the strongest gravity checks in at about four g's — about half the gravity that Gabe calculated on Mario World.

So as Earth-like as Mario's world may appear on screen, there is no planet in the universe that would give us moves like Mario's.

Stephen Hawking gave a priceless gift to filmmakers of the Oscar-winning movie about his life

eddie redmayne oscar win

Eddie Redmayne was shocked and thrilled to take home the Oscar for best actor on Sunday  beating out "Birdman" favorite Michael Keaton for his role portraying Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything."

But playing the part of the famed cosmologist came with a lot of pressure.

Hawking himself, now 73, would be judging the performance of Redmayne, who turned 33 in January.

The Theory of Everything stephen hawking

Hawking trekked to London to see the film ahead of its November 7 release. Redmayne told Variety that before watching the movie, the cosmologist warned: "I'll let you know what I think — good or otherwise." Redmayne said he answered, "Stephen, if it's otherwise, you don't need to go into details."

When the film screening was complete, Hawking was overcome with emotion (via Variety):

Stephen Hawking

After the lights came up, a nurse wiped a tear from Hawking's eye. He called the film 'broadly true,' and even celebrated with the film's director James Marsh and screenwriter Anthony McCarten at a bar where he sipped champagne from a teaspoon. 'He emailed us,' Marsh says, 'and said there were certain points when he thought he was watching himself.'

Hawking was so happy with the movie that he told filmmakers he would allow them to swap out the synthetic voice they had been forced to create and replace it with his trademarked computerized version. "We spent a lot of time and money trying to reproduce the voice, but we never got it," McCarten told Variety.

stephen hawking the theory of everything

Redmayne was thrilled after he heard about Hawking's offer, believing it was a stamp of approval on a performance he still questioned.

"You're just hoping to get there," Redmayne said. "Yet there's this constant frustration — it's always underwhelming, because you never quite make it. But with his specific voice, it's an actor's dream. You're one step closer to the truth."

Hawking's "voice," as he explains on his website, is a computer-based communication system that has been provided by Intel since 1997. To learn more about how it works, click here.

After Redmayne won the Oscar on Sunday, Hawking posted his congratulations to Facebook:

Redmayne acknowledged Hawking and his family during his acceptance speech:

Thank you. I don't think I’m capable of articulating quite how I feel right now. I'm fully aware that I am a lucky, lucky man. This Oscar belongs to all of those people around the world battling ALS. It belongs to one exceptional family — Stephen, Jane and the Hawking children. I will be his custodian. I will be at his beck and call. I wait on him hand and foot.

"The Theory of Everything," which was made for $15 million, has raked in over $104 million at the worldwide box office since its November release.

A ‘House of Cards’ actor lied to keep one of the biggest secrets of season 3

house of cards season 3 frank underwood kevin spaceyWarning: There are spoilers for "House of Cards" season 3, episode 1

"House of Cards" returned to Netflix Friday.

Those who tuned in to episode one of the new season quickly learned the answer to one of the biggest cliffhangers of season 2.

Last chance to head back before spoilers.

At the end of season 2, Frank Underwood's chief of staff Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly) was brutally attacked by a woman, Rachel Posner (Rachel Brosnahan).

Though his death was never confirmed, it seemed pretty obvious that Stamper would not return for another season. After having his head beat multiple times with a rock, he was abandoned in the woods to bleed out.

So, it was a big surprise when it was revealed that Stamper actually survived.

The entire first episode revolves heavily around Stamper and his lengthy recovery process after sustaining an injury to the left frontal cortex.

The news was also a big surprise since it didn't get out that actor Michael Kelly was returning to reprise his character or that he was filming on set.

The actor told the Associated Press he went to great lengths to keep the news from leaking.

"For a year, I've had to keep everything so secret," Kelly told AP. "I feel awful for having to lie, but what else could I do?"

According to Kelly, he wore a hat and contact lenses in public to keep fans from noticing him on and around the "House of Cards" set.

It didn't always work.

When someone would notice him on set, he came up with a few clever lies of his own to throw people off like "I'm a producer" and "These are my friends I'm coming back to visit."

The lies worked, up until a few weeks ago when the first 10 episodes of season 3 leaked onto Netflix briefly after a technical glitch. Fans who were able to stream the first few episodes learned early that Stamper's character was alive and well.

"House of Cards" season 3 is streaming now on Netflix.

D'Onofrio will be the first actor to play the "Daredevil" nemesis since Michael Clarke Duncan in 2003's heavily-panned film starring Ben Affleck.

The actor tells USA Today he gained about 30 pounds and studied the comic book series for the role.

"I wanted him to have an appearance of being super-powerful so that when he throws a punch, it's a major punch," said D'Onofrio. "There's a lot of weight behind it."

"Daredevil" premieres on Netflix April 10.

Next summer, Warner Bros. is releasing anticipated antihero film "Suicide Squad."

The movie, based on the comic-book series of the same name, follows a group of antiheroes and villains who work for the government.

One of the most exciting parts of "Suicide Squad" is that the movie will reintroduce audiences to Batman nemesis the Joker.

Oscar winner Jared Leto will take on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime, which previously was played by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero.

Leto will be the first person to play the character in a film since the late Heath Ledger in 2008's "The Dark Knight."

That role won Ledger a posthumous Oscar for best supporting actor.

Leto is known for his long flowing locks, a look the Joker isn't known for, except in Ledger's incarnation of the character.

On Monday, "Suicide Squad" director David Ayer teased Leto's transformation into the iconic DC Comics' villain on Twitter.

Leto ended up cutting off his hair and shaving his beard for the role.

What a difference!

That's not the only change the 43-year-old actor will undergo for the role.

Leto recently told Billboard he'll be putting on weight to play the character, which Ayer has described will be "majestic."

"I'm trying to gain a lot of weight," Leto told Billboard. "It means I have to eat every couple of hours — and I'm terrible at eating a lot."

Hopefully, we'll get a tease of Leto's first look as the Joker soon.

"Suicide Squad" is set for release August 5, 2016.

Here's how Kim Kardashian is plotting to take over the tech world

Kim Kardashian computer

Kim Kardashian's wildly popular app, "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood," raked in more than $74 million last year. This year, the app is reportedly on track to bring in another $200 million, with Kardashian getting an $85 million cut.

So it's no wonder that the 34-year-old reality TV star wants to continue building her brand within the industry, and creating more apps.

Kim Kardashian AdweekIn a new Adweek cover story, Kardashian tells the magazine:

I hope to have a bigger presence in the tech world. I love coming up with different app ideas, and I have a few more that are coming out. Once you get started and you have this creative bug of ideas that you want to get out, I feel like I've partnered with the right team, and now I have the creative outlet to make that happen. I'm happy that people are into it and perceiving it well. I just want to create more apps.

Turns out the E! reality star has really embraced her new role as app co-creator and star.

[The developers and I] talk daily—no set time, but we have these open emails and chats. If I have an idea, I send it to them. I [also] go down to [their home base] San Francisco every other month and meet with the whole team. The process and the approval process would just take too long [otherwise]. It's important that we connect and have a good relationship. And I think they value that because we do get everything done and expedite everything because we just have that open relationship.

Kim Kardashian Hollywood appSince its release on June 25, Glu Mobile's "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood," blew up in the App Store. The game has 28 million downloads and 11 billion minutes of play since it launched last summer.

The app, a choose-your-own-adventure-style game, allows users to go on photo shoots, dates, and rub elbows with Hollywood elite in order to climb the ranks and become an A-list celebrity.

As for why the game has been so succesful, Kardashian tells Adweek:

It's how I think of my show—someone can always relate. People always want to get their mind off of things and have something fun to do because their lives are so hectic. It's a fun game that you can really get addicted to and just lose yourself in for a couple of hours.
