Katy Perry kicked off the Super Bowl halftime show riding in on what looked like a giant robotic tiger (or lion) to her hit song "Roar."

Perry's song includes the lyrics "eye of the tiger," so it would make sense that the animal she's riding on is a tiger instead of a lion.

Either way, here's a better look at it.

Katy Perry kicked off the Super Bowl halftime show in high fashion. The 30-year-old pop star rode in on a giant tiger singing her song "Roar."

The show only got bigger, and sometimes stranger, from there.

Perry performed six of her songs, accompanied by Lenny Kravitz and a surprise appearance by Missy Elliot, who may have stolen the halftime show.

From interestingly costumed backup dancers and singing-and-dancing beach balls and sharks, Perry's first halftime show was a big success.

Perry rode out on a giant robotic tiger to her hit single "Roar."

Why The FA Cup Still Has No Sponsors

$

Manchester United

The FA Cup enters the fifth round this month, with smaller sides like Middlesborough and Bradford City taking on Premier League giants like Arsenal and Aston Villa. Cambridge United (stadium capacity 9,000) will take on Manchester United (stadium capacity 76,000) on Feb. 3, in an epic David v Goliath contest.

It’s ties like these that get fans nostalgically talking about the “magic of the FA Cup,” when tiny clubs have the chance to become giant killers. But on the commercial front, that FA Cup magic appears to have lost its sparkle.

The FA Cup is still without a sponsor, despite the competition — open to everyone from the top teams down to village pub clubs who play football in their spare time — kicking off back in August. Previous title sponsor Budweiser pulled out from its £9 million-a-year deal last season and the Football Association has had no luck in finding a replacement.

The FA is still understood to be looking for a partner for 2014/15 and has set an asking price of up to £10 million per season going forward. But Business Insider has spoken to several sponsorship industry insiders who all said it is unlikely the competition will pick up a new sponsor this season — and that it will probably struggle in the seasons to come.

The FA declined to comment when contacted by Business Insider.

There are a number of reasons why The FA Cup has “lost its luster” over recent years in the eyes of brands:

There are better competitions out there. As Jon Stainer, UK managing director of sports market research agency Repucom, told us: “There’s no doubt the FA Cup is still the competition for the masses, that celebrates underdogs and inclusively, but overshadowed by other competitions.”

Repucom’s SponsorTrack poll, which is nationally weighted and based on the responses of more than 10,000 people, found the FA Cup comes below the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FIFA World Cup in terms of consumer interest. Considering the sheer amount of domestic teams involved in the FA Cup compared to the Champions League, where only a handful of the top English sides take part, that’s worrisome.

Click to enlarge the chart below.

FA Cup interest

How the FA Cup is packaged commercially. Unlike the League Cup competition, in which brands become a title sponsor (It is currently named The Capital One Cup), FA Cup sponsors are only listed as the “presenting partner.”

Tim Crow, CEO of sponsorship agency Synergy, told us: “The way the FA Cup has been marketed and packaged by the FA misses a trick. ‘Presented by’ is a bit clunky and makes it seem more commercial and even American in a way. Amongst media and consumers, the FA Cup sponsor is not mentioned, more often than not. Last year, ‘Capital One’ was mentioned far more than ‘Budweiser’ [in relation to each competition.]”

Crow also believes the FA Cup is marketed to brands in a way that it only appears to become a hot property once the third round takes place in January.

“Much of the value actually lies in the period from August to Christmas, the real value lies in all those stories [of the smaller clubs and of community-level narratives]. Those ‘giant killing’ stories have become a bit hackneyed,” Crow says.

How the FA Cup has changed in the eyes of fans. The FA Cup Final used to categorically be the last game of the football season. Now that honor belongs to the UEFA Champions League Final. The FA Cup has also changed in other ways along the years, most notably in odd kick-off times. Holding a game on a Friday night is great for broadcasters, but can be met by ire form traveling fans.

Ben Cronin, business director at the sports marketing division within Starcom MediaVest Group, told us: “The tinkering with match dates and kick off times is evidence of the pressure on the Cup to react to the interest in other premium club football competitions, notably the UEFA Champions League and the Barclays Premier League. This has only been compounded during the life cycle of this latest sponsorship by not consistently being able to guarantee that the final is even the biggest English football match on offer that day.

All the sponsorship experts we spoke to did agree that there is still a chance for the FA Cup to pick itself back up and become a more attractive marketing property. It went without a sponsor for more than four years in the early-to-mid noughties when AXA ended its sponsorship in 2002.

Here were some of their suggestions:

  • The FA market itself better to overseas sponsors in areas like South East Asia where there are increasing levels of interest in English football and its traditions.
  • Get the product right at a football level: Stop holding finals at Wembley in London when the two finalists are from the North of England, for example.
  • Package the FA Cup up with other rights within the FA stable.
  • Offer up actual title sponsorship.
  • Better educate brands about the opportunities that lie around activating their sponsorships in the early stages of the competition.

Subway riders were in for a treat this weekend when they spotted Helen Mirren riding gracefully on the R train.

Yes, 69-year-old Academy Award winner Dame Helen Mirren rides public transportation.

One Instagram user was lucky enough to be sitting across from the Dame, and that person snapped her photo:

The purple gloves, the fur collar, the leather bag on her lap that she clearly doesn't trust to touch the ground  it's all perfect.

But this isn't the first time the British actress has entered the bowels of New York City's subway system.

It turns out Mirren frequently rides public transport, and many fellow passengers have Tweeted about seeing the Dame in such an unexpected setting:

But Mirren wasn't the only celeb spotted on the subway this weekend!

Jerry Seinfeld, too, is a man of the people.

Seinfeld's wife, Jessica Seinfeld, posted the below photo of the couple to Instagram.

She wrote in the caption: "Incredible dinner at Marea with @kellyripa and @instasuelos and a door to door subway ride home made for a perfect Friday night."

Just a week earlier, a beanie-clad Tom Hanks was spotted on the subway and reposted the photo from his official Instagram account:

This hypercar from 'Fast and Furious 7' flies between buildings

Lykan Hypersport Fast and Furious 7

All trailers touting "Fast and Furious 7" have so far featured the obligatory shots of Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, references to family, a gun fight, a fist fight, fast cars, beautiful locales, and even more beautiful people.

However, the latest trailer, which debuted over the weekend at Super Bowl XLIX, took it to a whole new level. It featured a car flying out of the side of one skyscraper — into another!

The driver is Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto character. The setting is Dubai. Diesel is being chased by an RPG-wielding Jason Statham.

The flying red car is a Lykan HyperSport.

This will be the first time many people have seen the Middle Eastern hypercar.

Lykan HyperSport

The Lykan HyperSport is built by Dubai-based W Motors and is the company's first attempt at producing high-priced automotive exotica.

The HyperSport is powered by a Porsche-sourced, 3.7 liter, twin-turbocharged, flat-6-cylinder engine that's tuned to produce 750 horsepower.

Lykan HyperSportAs a result, the hypercar is able to blitz the 0-60 mph run in just 2.8 seconds and reach an incredible top speed of 242 mph.

All of this performance doesn't come cheap. The asking price for the Middle Eastern exotic is roughly $3 million. Yikes!

Fast And Furious 7 Lykan HyperSport

Believe it or not, the Lykan's cinematic debut was not completely computer generated. In true "Fast and Furious" fashion, film makers actually drove the stunt car out of the side a set.

Granted, the stunt was performed much closer to the ground than depicted in the movie. But still.

Fast and Furious Lykan HyperSport

"Fast and Furious 7" will hit theaters on April 3. Check out the complete  trailer here:

HTC has released a bizarre rap video dissing Samsung and Apple

$

0

HTC is sticking two metaphorical fingers up at Apple and Samsung with the release of a "rap video" dissing its rivals, from "Doc G" of Hip Hop group P.M. Dawn.

The result is 2 minutes and 33 seconds of baffling lyrics, terrible rhymes and cringeworthy graphics. HTC is once again positioning itself as the ankle-biting underdog, perennially cemented with its "Quietly Brilliant" marketing tagline, and memorably celebrated in 2013 with its reported $1 billion wacky ad campaign starring Robert Downey Jr.

Choice lyrics from the new rap video include:

"We HTC and we about to say it loud. HTC, we hold the crown, word to Peter Chou."

"Your smartphone scared, they don't wanna clash with a Titan. They saw that M8 debut, they became enlightened."

"Your phone was all glass, why you changed your tune now? Your chip is slower, and you'll never touch our Boomsound."

"More than a few clowns stole what we originated. We own the universe, your Galaxy is overrated."

"It took you copycats six times to get it right. My One M8 is far too great, you'll never touch this light."

Here's the video. Prepare to watch through your fingers.

Bonus: Put the subtitles on. They are not synced with the video, and produce some...interesting results.

ADDED bonus: HTC has also conducted a super awkward interview with Doc G.

At just 21-years-old, McKinney is the latest "Burger Babe" to follow in the footsteps of Paris HiltonKate UptonNina Agdal Katherine Webb, and Emily Ratajkowski

Known for its sultry ads, the most recent Carl's Jr. commercial features a scantily clad McKinney with the tagline "All Natural" — just like the new grass-fed-beef burger from Carl's Jr.!

Charlotte McKinney model carls jr melons
While Victoria's Secret model Nina Agdal stole the spotlight in last year's ad, McKinney is relatively unknown to the general public.

So we did a little research and here's what we learned:

1. Where does she come from?

McKinney, 21, was born in Orlando, Fl., spent time in Miami, and is currently based in Los Angeles.

Charlotte McKinney
2. She dropped out of high school at age 17 after struggling with bullying and dyslexia.

"The girls were rude, they would call me whore, slut, fake boobs, it was brutal, pretty brutal," McKinney told the Daily Mail. "But it was hard for me, when I was 14 I was growing into my body and I had these boobs, I didn't know what to do with them! But I just knew I was above it all, I have an older sister, Garland, who has my back and these girls didn't matter."

McKinney also struggled with Dyslexia. "I've had such a hard time with dyslexia my whole life," she tells the Daily Mail. "When I was a child I didn't learn to read until I was a lot older and I was behind in my classes, it was such a challenge. Whenever people talk about dyslexia, it's important to know that some of the smartest people in the world, major owners of companies, are dyslexic. We just see things differently, so that's an advantage. I just learn a different way, there's nothing bad about it."

But when Charlotte decided to leave school, her parents supported her.

"Most parents would be bummed out, but my parents knew I was on the right track, I knew what I had to do to be successful," she adds. "I'm only 5ft 7ins tall and for modeling that's small, so I wasn't getting signed, but I kept on pushing."

Charlotte McKinney model tongue out thumbs up3. Her big break.

McKinney tells AO-AO: "I didn’t really get discovered for a while, I was just doing everything on my own but recently Paul Marciano contacted me for a GUESS shoot and that’s definitely helped my modelling career a lot more."

Today, McKinney is repped by Wilhelmina and ONE modeling agencies in New York.

4. She has over 274,000 Instagram followers and her large social media following helped her get cast in the Carl's Jr. ad.

"They saw my Fox interview and my social-media pages, and then they reached out to my agent," McKinney tells Esquire. "There wasn't really an audition process. They just booked me."

Charlotte McKinney Instagram5. She actually ate the burger in the Carl's Jr. commercial.

"I went for it! I bit into that burger," she tells Esquire. "They want it to look as real as it can. I definitely got in there. They said usually most of the girls take a lot of bites, but I only did eight. My best bite was my first one. I only took eight bites. I'm a fan of Carl's Jr. though. I'm from Florida and we didn't have it out there, so when I came to LA it was definitely a choice I made to eat it.

"People will be like, 'Oh your dad saw it?' and I’m like, 'Of course my dad saw it!' He friggin' loved it," she told People. "My dad gets a kick out of anything like that. [My family is] my No. 1 fans, so they just freaked out and called all their friends. Even my grandfather who’s in his 90s got to see it. They all loved it."

7. She has a part in the upcoming "Joe Dirt" sequel alongside David Spade.

"I play a logger named Missy," McKinney tells Esquire. "That was so much fun to shoot. You'll just have to see it for yourself. I don't want to spoil it all now. It will be out this summer."

8. Here's how she feels about the Kate Upton comparisons.

"It's pretty obvious. We both have blonde hair, we're from Florida, and we have enormous t---," McKinney tells Esquire. "It's super-flattering to me. Her career is amazing. But I'm ready to get that tossed away and start making a name for myself. Hopefully we both have a totally different realm of what we're doing. But it is flattering."

"I'm having fun right now," McKinney told E! Online's Marc Malkin. "I'm dating around." As for what kind of guy she's looking for, McKinney says: "I like funny. That's my biggest thing. If I don't laugh at you and you don't laugh at me, it's not going to work."

Keanu Reeves' Best Movie Since 'The Matrix' Is Available Today

$

john wick keanu

"John Wick" is everything you hope an R-rated action flick will be. It's stylish, violent, and has a great sense of humor when Wick isn't too busy shooting people in the head. The movie is a breath of fresh air that skips the long form set-up and gets right down to the nitty-gritty violence that the audience wants and expects.

The plot is simple — John Wick is a retired hitman. When his wife becomes ill, he gets out of the business to take care of her, but she eventually dies. Before she does, she buys John a dog to remember her by. When some clueless thugs decide to steal John's car and kill his precious dog, it's time for him to come out of retirement and avenge his loved ones.

The opening scenes in "John Wick" are reminiscent of the opening montage in Disney Pixar's "Up" where you watch a couple's relationship from start to finishBoth sequences get the audience emotionally invested in the characters and their story in mere minutes. While "John Wick" may not leave anybody in tears like the Pixar flick, the scenes with Wick and his adorable beagle pup at the beginning of the film are hilarious and do a great job of setting up the mayhem that is to follow. When the baddies show up and wreak havoc, we root for Wick to take them down because we loved that damn dog as much as he did.

john wick keanu dog

Wick has quite the reputation. Anytime his name is mentioned, there's a palpable fear associated with it, and for good reason. The audience gets to know Wick mostly through word-of-mouth; we hear other characters mention his name and see the look of terror in their eyes. Some of the biggest laughs in the film (and there are many) come simply from the way people regard Wick in conversation — he is a force to be reckoned with, and everybody knows it. The world-building here is outstanding and by the end, we realize why everyone knows his name.

Keanu has never been known for his versatility, and his performance is about as 'Keanu' as one would hope. He gets some quality, silly one-liners to spout in between bullets, but what's most impressive about the role is his physicality. The film was directed by two veteran stuntmen who have worked with Reeves in the past and who clearly know their way around shooting impressive action. Reeves reportedly spent months training and learning various fighting styles for the role, and his efforts totally paid off — he's an action hero again.

The fight scenes are insanely well-choreographed and impeccably shot; there are no confusing quick-cuts to be found here. It borrows from martial-arts style films like "The Raid" in that the ultraviolence is methodically constructed and exciting. Rather than jump from one jarring angle to the next, longer takes are utilized as the camera pans from one kill to another seamlessly as Wick takes out a staggering number of baddies. There are plenty of  "oohs" and "ahhs" that stem from the inventive ways in which he takes them all out.

john wick martial arts

The biggest surprise of the movie is how funny it is; Michael Nyqvist steals every scene as the crime-boss father of the poor sap who wronged Wick. The ominousness surrounding Wick is consistently played for laughs, and Nyqvist gets the biggest one of the movie with a simple reaction shot and a two-letter word — you'll know it when you see it. The son is played by Alfie Allen, better known as Theon Greyjoy from HBO's "Game of Thrones," and while he isn't given much to do here besides be a jerk, he's perfectly capable in the role.

"John Wick" isn't perfect. There are some pacing issues toward the end — a big moment happens about 10 minutes too early, and after that it kind of just limps to the finish. There's another satisfying, hyper-violent gunfight to be had, but after such a climatic (and seemingly mission-ending) scene, it feels tacked on and unnecessary.

Besides that minor hiccup, "John Wick" is otherwise very efficient and will restore your faith in both Keanu Reeves and the genre.

These are the awesomely nerdy names Elon Musk chose for his rocket-catching drone ships

SpaceX wants to be able to land the reusable parts of its Falcon 9 rockets on floating drone ships at sea, and the recently released names of the ships appear to be a tribute to a classic science fiction series.

Last week, Elon Musk tweeted out an image of one of the drone ships designed to act as a landing pad for the Falcon 9 rocket. Most notable is that the ship now has its rather silly name painted on the deck:

Musk had previously tweeted this name for the East Coast ship, and a similarly odd name for the West Coast drone ship under construction:

Sci-fi aficionados might recognize these names: They are likely a reference to "The Culture," a series of science fiction novels and short stories written by the late Scottish author Iain M. Banks.

The "Culture" novels focus on an incredibly technologically advanced interstellar civilization, in which nearly god-like artificial intelligences housed in powerful starships coexist with a wide range of humanoid species. The Culture is portrayed as a post-scarcity utopia: Citizens of the Culture have access to virtually anything they need or want, live in perfect health for centuries, and spend those long lives pursuing whatever noble or hedonistic goals they want.

Central to the Culture are "Minds": Artificially intelligent starships and space stations that, while being vastly more intelligent and powerful than the human-like beings they carry, are extremely friendly and peace-loving, though also ready to take whatever measures are necessary to protect their civilization and its interests.

Culture Minds have a tendency to give themselves flippant names, and here's where Musk may have drawn his inspiration. Both "Just Read The Instructions" and "Of Course I Still Love You" are names of Minds in Banks' "The Player of Games," a very enjoyable novel in which the Culture works to undermine a stagnant and brutal dictatorship whose leadership is determined by the outcome of a complicated strategy game.

Given Musk's worries about the possibility of uncontrolled or malignant AI destroying humanity, it's heartening that he chose to honor a much more optimistic view of the possibilities of AI and space travel in the naming of his drone ships.

On Tuesday, Rihanna released the music video for "FourFiveSeconds," the first single from her highly-anticipated upcoming album, which does not yet have a release date.

Rihanna hasn't released a new album since 2012's "Unapologetic."

A different sound than anything the singer has done before, the new song also features singing from Kanye West, and guitar by Paul McCartney.

"Kanye came up with the idea of doing just some real street denim, all-American type look," Rihanna said last week in a behind-the-scenes teaser video. "Denim never goes out of style. It’s iconic, just like the f------ Beatles."

The video was shot by photography duo Inez and Vinoodh, a celebrity favorite.

On Tuesday, it was announced the all-star musical trio will perform "FourFiveSeconds" at Sunday's Grammy Awards.

The performance will mark West’s return to the Grammy stage after a six-year absence, where he will also be performing a solo song. A 21-time winner, West is nominated for two awards, and Rihanna is up for one.

Robin Williams' wife and kids have started a battle for his estate

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Robin Williams' children and wife have gone to court in a fight over the late comedian's estate.

In papers filed in December in San Francisco Superior Court, Williams' wife, Susan, says some of the late actor's personal items were taken without her permission and asks the court to exclude the contents of the Tiburon home that she shared with Williams from the jewelry, memorabilia and other items Williams said the children should have.

The children, Zachary, Zelda and Cody, counter that Susan Williams is "adding insult to a terrible injury" by trying to change the trust agreement and rob them of the late actor's clothing and other personal items.

"The Williams' children are heartbroken that Petitioner, Mr. Williams' wife of less than three years, has acted against his wishes by challenging the plans he so carefully made for his estate," attorneys for the children said in court papers.

James Wagstaffe, an attorney for Susan Williams, said Monday that his client was only seeking guidance from the court about the meaning of certain terms in the trust.

"This is not ugly," he said. "I would not say this is anticipated to be a highly contested proceeding."

An attorney for the children, Allan Mayer, declined to comment.

Williams died at his Tiburon home in August. The coroner ruled his death a suicide that resulted from asphyxia caused by hanging.

Susan Williams has said the actor and comedian was struggling with depression, anxiety and a recent diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Williams had publicly acknowledged periodic struggles with substance abuse, and he had entered a substance abuse program shortly before his death. According to the coroner's report, his wife told an investigator that Williams did not go there because of recent drug or alcohol abuse, but rather to reaffirm the principles of his rehabilitation.

Williams' trust granted his children his memorabilia and awards in the entertainment industry and some other specific personal items, according to court documents. Susan Williams says that because he wanted her to continue to live at the Tiburon home, it makes sense that he intended only for his children to have the specific personal items he delineated that were kept at another home he owned in Napa.

"Any other interpretation would lead to Mrs. Williams' home being stripped while Mrs. Williams still lives there," her attorneys wrote. The children dispute that interpretation, saying there were no specific limits on the location of those items.

The two sides also disagree over items put in storage, watches Williams owned and his memorabilia.
