Cristiano Ronaldo, wearing a wig and glasses, surprised a young fan on the streets of Madrid

Here's how 'Birdman' shot that crazy scene of Michael Keaton running in Times Square in his underwear

birdman michael keaton times squareThere's an unforgettable scene in "Birdman" where Michael Keaton is forced to walk through New York's Times Square in his underwear after getting locked out of his dressing room mid-performance at a nearby Broadway theater.

But what many don't realize about the key scene is that Keaton really had to dodge unsuspecting, gawking fans in New York's busiest area  all in one continuous shot with no cuts.

Here's what the scene ended up looking like in the film:

Michael Keaton Birdman Times Square GIF

But the shoot wasn't easy.

The film's director, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, explained the logistical nightmare to Variety:

There were four takes, starting at 8:30 p.m. If the shot was too early, the lighting wouldn’t work; too late, the crowd would thin. Crew was kept to a minimum, to draw as little attention as possible. Keaton’s movements were accompanied by only four people: Lubezki [cinematographer]; the focus puller; the boom operator; and the digital imaging technician. Eight production assistants worked on crowd control. Inarritu was close by; for two of the four takes, he shot Keaton with his smartphone for footage used in a subsequent scene in which Emma Stone watches the incident on YouTube...

Because production couldn't afford to shut down Times Square or fill it with paid extras, real fans and onlookers became part of the shot.

"We worried about security," Inarritu told Variety, adding that there was a fear someone would stare at the camera or walk into the scene. "There was no possibility to cut away if that happened" since it was one long take, the director notes. "If any scene in the film failed, I could not remove it or manipulate it. It had to be perfect."

Here's what the shoot looked like in reality as a passerby in Times Square:

In order to divert people's attention from the camera, Variety reports that Inarritu hired a group of street drummers who danced and performed nearby. "All the tourists wanted to look at these drummers. A half-naked man in Times Square? They’ve seen that before," said the director.

"Birdman" production designer, Kevin Thompson, explained further to Yahoo Movies:

"Having the drummers there really assisted in gathering and holding the crowd, and then also holding space along one side of them. It created an energy that helped, I think."

Now watch the shoot from the drummers' point of view:

"Even though it does look like chaos, we did have to control the crowd and extras," added Thompson. "For the most part we just had a ton of film crew dressed as pedestrians that we’d guide, and then all these extras taking pictures. It was very complicated."

Another challenge that production faced was all of the prominent brand advertising in the background of the Times Square shoot.

The "Birdman" legal team had to get permission from each brand to be used onscreen, reports Variety.

But it wasn't just the Times Square scene that was tough to shoot. The entire film was made to look like one continuous, two-hour shot.

In order to achieve the look, the cast underwent shots that took anywhere from seven to 10 minutes to film, according to Entertainment Weekly.

"Everybody showed up every morning frightened," Keaton told EW. "The crew too. I think we were all thinking, I don't want to be the guy who lets everybody down."

The cast, crew, and camera team had to be in sync at all times on the very fast 30-day shoot.

Here's how EW describes what one mistake would cost them on set:

"Anything—a misremembered line, an extra step taken, a camera operator stumbling on a stair or veering off course or out of focus—could blow a take, rendering the first several minutes unusable even if they had been perfect."

"You had to be word-perfect, you had to be off script, and you literally had to count your paces down to the number of steps you needed to take before turning a corner," Keaton told EW.

But the challenging shoot was worth it.

"Birdman" recently led the Oscar nominations with nine nods, including best picture, best actor for Michael Keaton, best director for Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and achievement in cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, the Oscar-winning cinematographer who worked on "Gravity."

On a production budget of just $18 million, the film has raked in nearly $42 million since its late October limited release.

Kanye West explains how marriage has helped him become a better man

Here's what it's like to work with Steven Spielberg

steven spielberg

Three-time Oscar winner Steven Spielberg is known for being a directorial genius, and actors who work with him often learn a tremendous amount just from watching his process.

Take actor/writer/directorEdward Burns, for example.

Ed Burns Christy Turlington

In his new memoir, "Independent Ed," the actor recounts working with Spielberg on the 1998 Oscar-winning film, "Saving Private Ryan."

Burns discusses how he was incredibly nervous when he began filming — so nervous that he says he "botched" several takes. He even recalls Tom Hanks leaning in and whispering to him to calm down ("I've seen you act before, and this isn't acting!" he claims Hanks said). Yet despite several uncomfortable takes, Spielberg offered zero feedback, which terrified Burns.

He writes:

"Most directors would have stepped in after my first botched take, offered some notes, and inadvertently rattled my confidence. But this wasn't Steven's approach with us. He allowed us several takes to figure things out for ourselves. So much that he didn't provide any direction for almost two weeks. We did our scenes in two or three takes and then moved on. No feedback. No nothing. The cast figured he hated what we were doing and speculated which one of us would be fired first."

Ed Burns Steven Spielberg Tom HanksSpielberg started to give direction a few weeks later. But his early silence wasn't for naught. It was a strategy to help his actors find their respective ways on their own. According to Burns' account, Spielberg said:

"I like to give my actors three takes to figure it out. If I step in after the first take and give you a note, especially with young actors, you'll hear me rather than your own voice.

That might rattle you, too. Hurt your confidence. Or cause you to question your choices. And who ever gets it right on the first or second take?

So I'll give you time to find it [....] Especially in an ensemble piece where you have four or five guys acting together. It's going to take everyone a little time to find the beats and gel."

Burns says working with Spielberg taught him that being a director is "about knowing when to give direction."

According to Burns, Spielberg later said he steps in when he feels actors are going in the wrong direction "... And then, only with a little note, as little as possible. I'd rather you guys find it.steven spielberg set of saving private ryanBurns says the entire process of filming "Saving Private Ryan" was "a life changer," as it influenced the way he approached directing and filmmaking moving forward.

20 actors who dramatically changed their looks for movies

$

bradley cooper american sniper

Bradley Cooper recently bulked up to 225 pounds to play US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in "American Sniper."

His daily regimen included two intense workouts and eating more than 5,000 calories per day.

He's not the only actor to undergo extreme measures to gain and lose weight for a role. Plenty of stars have endured grueling diets and workouts to be in tip-top shape for their roles as superheroes, ballerinas, boxers, and more.

Keertana Sastry and Jennifer Michalski contributed to this story.

Bradley Cooper gained 40 pounds for "American Sniper."

The Oscar-nominated actor told Men's Health he worked with a trainer twice a day to help him gain the weight in 10 weeks:

In the first workout, beginning at 5 a.m., they focused on structural exercises like deadlifts and squats to build a foundation solid enough to hold the extra mass. The second workout, late in the afternoon, was more focused on traditional muscle-building exercises. Cooper needed both types of training to convincingly portray Chris Kyle.

Jake Gyllenhaal looked gaunt after losing 30 pounds for his role in "Nightcrawler."

Gyllenhaal really went all-out to get into the mind of a deranged, career-hungry freelance journalist.

The actor told Variety he didn't take on any special diet. Instead, he just stopped eating:

I would try to eat as few calories as possible. I knew if I was hungry that I was in the right spot. Physically, it showed itself, but chemically and mentally, I think it was even a more fascinating journey. It became a struggle for me.

Gyllenhaal added that he would often go on 15-mile runs from his home to the film's set.

In addition, his co-star Riz Ahmed claimed the star would chew flavored gum to trick his mind into believing he was eating a meal.

Chris Pratt lost 60 pounds in six months for "Guardians of the Galaxy."

Pratt said he ditched beer to take on the role of Peter Quill in Marvel's hit. He also divulged his workout routine with a personal trainer and nutritionist to Men's Fitness.

It consisted of running, swimming, boxing, kickboxing, a triathlon, and consuming 4,000 calories a day.

"I actually lost weight by eating more food, but eating the right food, eating healthy foods, and so when I was done with the movie my body hadn't been in starvation mode," Pratt told People magazine.

How action star Danny Trejo was convinced to play Marcia Brady in Snickers' Super Bowl ad

danny trejo super bowl ad

Action star Danny Trejo is known for his role in the "Machete" films, but his latest part is playing Marcia from "The Brady Bunch."

The 70-year-old actor teamed up with Snickers for its Super Bowl commercial this year, in which he stars as himself playing the blonde high school student.

Business Insider caught up with Trejo to see what prompted the actor to take on the out of character role. He says he was just as surprised to hear about the role as you may have been.

"My agent called me and said, ‘Danny, I have a surprise for you. They want you to play Marcia Brady,'" Trejo tells Business Insider. "I’ve been nurturing a career of being a bad guy for 20 years and [you want me to] play Marcia Brady."

However, when Trejo learned the part was for Snickers' Super Bowl ad, he jumped at the opportunity, recalling some of the brand's former popular commercials which have featured the likes of Betty White and Joe Pesci.

"I just couldn’t believe it," says Trejo. "So I read the commercial, and it was funny. It’s going to be an amazing commercial."

His family was surprised he decided to take on the role, too. When we asked Trejo what they thought of his latest gig, he broke out in a fit of laughter.

"When I said I’m going to play Marcia Brady … they all kind of looked at me," said Trejo.

marcia bradyHe explained that they wanted to make sure Trejo knew who he was talking about. Of course, he was.

While Trejo didn't mention being a fan of the popular '70s series, he did have a thing for Florence Henderson, whose voice can be heard in the teaser ad.

"Yes, I’ll admit I was in love with the mom [Carol Brady]," recalled Trejo. "I had a crush."

Trejo has done several commercials over the years including ones for El Paso and Miller Lite.

As opposed to his films, where Trejo can be on set for a week or several at a time for shooting, commercials are obviously less time consuming. Trejo tells us the Snickers ad took “a couple of days” to shoot in a studio.

Come Super Bowl Sunday, Trejo thinks his Snickers' ad has a good chance of being the best of the evening.

If you haven't seen the teaser yet, it's pretty funny.

Trejo says making the piece was a lot of fun, and said that if it's a success, it could be the start of something new for the actor.

"I might have a complete new career going here," he laughed.

The full 30-second spot, which costs an estimated $4.5 million, will be released ahead of the Super Bowl if enough fans head to Snicker's Facebook page and check out the ad.

You can check out the teaser below.

katy perry super bowl press conference

Katy Perry is performing Sunday night during the Super Bowl halftime show.

How did the pop star prepare for what she calls the "biggest event" of her career?

In a new interview with Billboard magazine, Perry said she emailed last year's halftime performer Bruno Mars for advice.

Here's what she sent him via Billboard:

Hello, exclusive Super Bowl club member! I was wondering if you are in L.A. at all this month and would have tea with a sister who is about to throw up with nervousness re: [football emoji]. I've heard about your process through our managers, but am wondering if you had more insight on important things like, spray tan the night before or three nights before? JK, or maybe not!

Perry told Billboard she planned to meet up with Mars before her big performance.

Sunday evening, Perry will perform with special guests including Lenny Kravitz.

The 30-year-old singer said she's prepared for whatever may happen during the halftime show.

"You can't control other people, and hopefully they're on the same path with you," Perry told Billboard.

Chevy just ran an extremely clever — if slightly irritating — ad during the Super Bowl that made millions of people think their TV had died right ahead of the big game.

The spot began with an aerial view of the University of Phoenix stadium, before the picture very realistically cut out, leaving viewers wondering how on earth they were going to watch the Super Bowl.

It was certainly attention-grabbing and served the purpose to educate viewers about the in-built 4G LTE WiFi inside the new Chevy Colorado.

BMW's Super Bowl brand ambassador Katie Couric admitted on TV that she actually drives an Audi

Katie Couric Today Show Interview

BMW has two new brand ambassadors for its Super Bowl ad this year: former “Today Show” anchors Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel. But the automaker may want to call Couric in to quickly brush up on the brand rulebook.

The brand's Super Bowl spot harks back to a now-infamous 1994 clip from the show when the presenters were perplexed by the internet and struggled to explain to viewers how to email the program. “What is ‘internet’ anyway,” Gumbel said, “Do you write to it like mail?”

The “Newfangled Idea” ad then fast-forwards to 2015 when the presenters struggle to grasp the concept of BMW’s electric i3 vehicle.

Couric — who is now Yahoo’s global news anchor — returned to the “Today Show” sofa on January 26 to be interviewed about the ad, in which she appeared to also struggle to remember which brand writes her paycheck.

Presenter Matt Lauer called her out, revealing she has actually never driven a BMW before. Apparently she drove a Honda for years, before switching to a Minivan.

“I actually traded in my Minivan recently, I got an Audi, yeah…I stepped it up!” Couric said

She quickly recovered, adding: “[Couric’s husband] John actually has a BMW, but I’m scared to drive it because it’s so nice.”

Couric also reveals some interesting nuggets about the filming of the commercial, including the fact that the line at the end where Gumbel asks if she can “twerk” was ad-libbed on the day. As was her dancing.

Here’s the full “Today Show” interview with Couric.

Budweiser may have just won the Super Bowl again with its adorable 'Lost Puppy' ad

Budweiser Lost Dog Super Bowl Ad

Budweiser kept to recent form during this year's Super Bowl with an adorable ad starring its famous puppy brand ambassador and the iconic Clydesdale horses.

The 60-second ad, created by ad agency Anomaly, debuted on “The Today Show” on January 28. It’s the follow up to the “Puppy Love” commercial that was roundly decreed to have “won” last year’s Super Bowl commercial breaks.

It might have just done it again this year.

This year’s tale sees the rambunctious little pup jumping into the back of a horse trailer and getting lost, much to his owner’s despair, who stars pinning up “Lost” posters.

The silly puppy finds himself in a spot of bother when he’s confronted by a new character to enter the series: A scary looking wolf.

Fortunately his Clydesdale pals hear his pitiful cry for help and race to his rescue. And the little dog is returned to his owner once again.

It’s all set to a lilting cover version of The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).”

We’re not sure it tugs on the heart strings quite as much as Budweiser’s previous efforts, but we’ll let you be the judge. Here’s the video:

Keep an eye out for another Budweiser ad and a Bud Light ad during the rest of the commercial breaks.

Nationwide's Super Bowl ad about dead kids was a huge buzz kill

It was viewers — not footballs — that were left a tad deflated after watching Nationwide's Super Bowl ad.

The subject? Dead kids.

Oof.

Here's the ad:

Many people watching immediately started talking about how depressing the spot was.

Nationwide later released this statement in response to the uproar caused by its ad: "Preventable injuries around the home are the leading cause of childhood deaths in America. Most people don’t know that. Nationwide ran an ad during the Super Bowl that started a fierce conversation. The sole purpose of this message was to start a conversation, not sell insurance. We want to build awareness of an issue that is near and dear to all of us—the safety and well being of our children. We knew the ad would spur a variety of reactions. In fact, thousands of people visited MakeSafeHappen.com, a new website to help educate parents and caregivers with information and resources in an effort to make their homes safer and avoid a potential injury or death. Nationwide has been working with experts for more than 60 years to make homes safer. While some did not care for the ad, we hope it served to begin a dialogue to make safe happen for children everywhere."

Nationwide also aired another ad during the first quarter of the game, this one a little lighter in subject matter. It stars a (not dead) Matt Damon and Mindy Kaling.

Explosions, cars parachuting from airplanes, and girls fighting in dresses.

Universal just released an action-packed new trailer for “Furious 7,” the latest film in the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and you’ll need to watch it again to make sure you caught everything going on.

There’s a scene where the Rock brandishes a machine gun, and, to top it all off, a car crashes through a high-rise building into another building.

It looks ridiculous, and we’re going to enjoy every moment of it.

Vin Diesel, Ludacris, Michelle Rodriguez, and the rest of the “Fast & Furious” crew return for the sequel along with Paul Walker in his final film role.

“Furious 7” is in theaters April 3.

GoDaddy's swiftly edited Super Bowl ad was far less exciting than the commercial it had to pull

GoDaddy aired a commercial during Super Bowl XLIX — but it wasn't the spot it originally had planned.

On the Tuesday before the game GoDaddy announced it was pulling the Super Bowl ad it had debuted online that day after animal campaigners complained it could encourage people to buy pets irresponsibly. The ad, which had aimed to parody Budweiser's popular puppy Super Bowl spots, saw a cute little Golden Retriever puppy (called Buddy) being sold online.

A Change.org petition calling for GoDaddy to can the ad gained more than 42,000 supporters, while animal lovers also petitioned the company via Twitter. GoDaddy responded by apologizing and pulling the commercial.

With just days to go and having already spent $4.5 million to secure 30-seconds of big game air time, GoDaddy's ad agency created an ad in 24-hours from file footage, according to AdAge. It's narrated by the agency's art director, who had apparently never done any voiceover work before.

Here's the new spot:

And this was the original (forgive the quality of the video; the official version has been taken down from YouTube):
