People Magazine Accidentally Published Kirk Douglas' Pre-Written Obituary

$

Legendary actor Kirk Douglas already knows how his death will be reported, because People magazine is already reporting it.

Confirming the worst-kept secret in publishing, People has been hosting its pre-written obituary for Douglas, 97, since late September. Look:

Reader “RL” pointed the obit out to Uproxx. Here’s a few choice excerpts you – and maybe Douglas, if he’s in the mood – can read before it gets taken down.

Here’s all the family members who still survive the not-dead-yet Douglas:

It’s important to be first to publish, but that makes getting a quote awkward, so it’s always good to have something close enough to what people might be feeling about Kirk’s death in there. Even if it is from 1979:

But it’s not all bad new for People magazine. Their subs still have time to fix this “youngest Kirk’s” typo:

Douglas and his death has been the subject of several hoaxes linked to Facebook pages, the latest coming just in the past week reporting he had died on November 25. So it’s entirely possible the People page itself is a very clever fake. (We’re waiting on a reply from People.)

Hopefully, Douglas won’t be too shattered by the news and will be able to enjoy his 98th birthday on December 9.

'The Walking Dead' Creator Says The Show Could Go On For 12 Seasons

rick daryl the walking deadWarning: Minor spoilers follow if you're not caught up with "The Walking Dead."

"The Walking Dead" finished up its season 5 mid-season finale Sunday night.

At the end of the episode, Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Daryl (Norman Reedus), group were reunited with the rest of their crew. With no shelter and a firetruck at their disposal, it's uncertain where the gang is heading from here.

"The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman hinted on Sunday's aftershow "The Talking Dead" that if you read the comics you shouldn't be surprised by where they're heading next on their journey.

the walking dead

In the comics, the group head to a safe-zone located in Alexandria, Virginia.

The Alexandria storyline comes pretty far in the comics (issue #69). Now that the monthly comic series is at issue #134, a common question among fans is whether the show will catch up with the comic series, and, what would happen if that does eventually occur.

We recently caught up with Kirkman at New York Comic Con where the creator assured us fans have nothing to worry about. There's plenty of material for the AMC series for seasons to come.

"We have a huge head start," Kirkman tells Business Insider. "We’re many many years ahead of them [the comics] and Charlie Adlard and I continue to crank issues out every month. So if we continue and the show continues, the material we’re working on right now would be season 11 or 12."

"And by the time we get to season 11 or 12, we’ll be like five or six years ahead of that," he adds. "Really at the pace that the show is going and the comic is going, they’ll never really catch up."

Not many series make it to 10 seasons and beyond. If its run does last that long, "The Walking Dead" would be in a select group with shows including "M*A*S*H" (11 seasons), "Frasier" (11 seasons) and "Two and a Half Men" (12 seasons). "The Simpsons" is now in its 26th season.

Kirkman's aware of that and the possibility that at any point zombie fatigue could in, but he says they're well prepared.

"The show could fade in popularity and end at some point," says Kirkman. "We’re certainly aware of that and we have game plans in place for that if it were to happen."

the walking dead rick carl

"I would argue that our show isn’t solely a zombie show. It’s a survival show," Kirkman adds. "If you’ve been paying attention to the comics the zombies certainly fluctuate from being very in the forefront to being very far into the background and not being a very big part of the comic at all. And I think the show will follow a similar trajectory. So, I think as long as we can kind of be more than just a zombie show, we’ll hopefully be okay if there’s ever a big backlash to zombies but who knows what the future holds as far as the show’s popularity goes. We’ll see."

Here's Chris Rock's Review Of President Obama

Chris Rock Obama

Comedian Chris Rock thinks President Barack Obama is more like Shaq than Michael Jordan.

Rock explained the comparison in a lengthy interview with New York Magazine published Monday in which he offered an assessment of the president's time in office.

"I’m trying to figure out the right analogy," Rock said. "Everybody wanted Michael Jordan, right? We got Shaq. That's not a disappointment. You know what I mean? We got Charles Barkley. It's still a Hall of Fame career. The president should be graded on jobs and peace, and the other stuff is debatable. Do more people have jobs, and is there more peace? I guess there's a little more peace. Not as much peace as we'd like, but I mean, that's kind of the gig."

Rock went on to compare Obama to a television executive. Whereas President George W. Bush "operated like a cable network" and "only served the people who voted for him," Rock said Obama was "a network guy" and tried to "get everybody."

"I think he’s figured out, and maybe a little late, that there’s some people he’s never going to get," Rock said.

When asked what Obama had done "wrong," Rock said the president would potentially be viewed more positively if he let "the country flatline."

"In sports, that’s what any new GM does," Rock said. "They make sure that the catastrophe is on the old management and then they clean up. They don’t try to save old management’s mistakes."

Rock also discussed what it was like to meet Obama in person. He described the president as "kind of cool."

"I always say, cooler than most politicians, not as cool as actual cool people," Rock said. "He’s not cool like Jay Z's cool. He's not Eddie Murphy. But in a world of politicians …"

Here's What Chris Rock Really Thinks About Bill Cosby And Other Comedians

Chris Rock

Chris Rock is the latest comedian to weigh in on the Bill Cosby scandal.

Despite Rock telling Vulture that Cosby was initially "disdainful" of the younger comedian in his early days, the older comic "turned pretty quick" and the two had a good relationship.

In the wake of recent sexual assault accusations against Cosby, Rock tells Vulture:

I don’t know what to say. What do you say? I hope it's not true. That's all you can say. I really do. I grew up on Cosby. I love Cosby, and I just hope it's not true. It's a weird year for comedy. We lost Robin, we lost Joan, and we kind of lost Cosby.

chris rock bill cosby jerry seinfeldRock also spoke about other comedians and the field as a whole.

He said he was a huge fan of Joan Rivers, who was still performing stand-up until she died in September at age 81:

Great person, underrated comedian. Who the hell's funnier than Joan Rivers? That whole reference thing: Joan updated constantly.

The compliment you give of a comedian is: Who wants to follow them onstage? Nobody wanted to follow Joan Rivers, ever. Even in her 80s, nobody wanted to follow her.

Rock says he relates to Jerry Seinfeld:

He bores easily. I bore easily. Not because I'm on some spectrum, but because I hear so many conversations again and again. So many people come up to you, and not enough people try to take into account what you've heard already.

chris rock jerry seinfeld

And he compares the style of his new movie "Top Five" to Woody Allen films:

I don’t even think Woody does comedy. I think he does dramas with jokes. They're all sad at their core.

A Newly Published Nintendo Patent Suggests The Company Might Finally Be Waking Up

Super Mario

The USPTO published a patent that was filed by Nintendo, which outlines the company's plans to extend emulators for its handheld systems, namely the Game Boy, on other devices such as mobile phones and even on seat-back displays in airplanes.

The patent, which is actually a continuation of an ongoing patent, was made public last week. It was filed in June.

The patent doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be seeing Nintendo games on your next flight, however. As TechCrunch points out, Nintendo could just be protecting its IP without having any actual interest in releasing a product to consumers, especially since a similar patent was filed back in 2000.

In fact, this could just be a way to crack down on third-party emulators. Nintendo has taken a strong stance against piracy and emulators, which let people play its games on unsanctioned devices. It has a long tradition of safeguarding the playing experience, starting with the "Nintendo Seal of Quality" back in the 1980s when the first Nintendo Entertainment System came out.

Nintendo has also notoriously been adamant against offering its full games on mobile devices.

In a Q&A with Re/code's Eric Johnson, Nintendo of America's President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime said, "It hasn’t changed our philosophy, which continues to be that we believe that it’s best for the gamer and the consumer to have gaming experiences that are unique and differentiated, and part of the way we deliver that is with our unique and differentiated hardware."

Still, the patent could be a huge step in the right direction for Nintendo. By releasing its own emulation software to allow people to play its games on mobile phones and via seat-back displays, it could give a boost the company's software sales, which have been dwindling due to poor Wii U sales. But the company recently announced it's on track to report an annual profit for the first time in four years. A little boost in the mobile space couldn't hurt.

Mark Cuban Explains The Real Reason He Joined The 'Shark Tank' Cast

mark cuban mavericks shark tank

Mark Cuban has an estimated net worth of around $2.7 billion and is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. His website lists 96 companies that he's invested in, around half of those deals made over four seasons of ABC's hit show "Shark Tank."

He clearly doesn't need the show as an essential part of his career or even his celebrity, but in a recent podcast interview with Bloomberg's Barry Ritholtz, he says he does it for more than just fun.

Cuban is happy to lend his star power to the show because he sees it as "the New Age lemonade stand." He explains:

"Shark Tank" sends a message, right? I do "Shark Tank" — the deals are good and I enjoy it — but to me, the importance of doing "Shark Tank" is more sending the message that the American Dream is alive and well.

There's no other platform — whether it's in school, whether it's on television — there's absolutely no other platform where you can go out and reach kids, families, and entrepreneurs, and encourage them, support them, train them, really fire them up, and give them some guidance to go ahead and really start that business.

Cuban tells Ritholtz that he learned of the show's growing cultural impact shortly after his guest investor appearances in season two. He says that at that time "all of a sudden I start getting emails and comments from people on the street: 'I love the show 'cause my 7-year-old loves to watch it/my 12-year-old now understands valuations. We talk about businesses.' When you see a family from Iowa standing on that carpet on 'Shark Tank' talking about the company they started as a family, it makes kids realize they can do it, too," he says.

The returns from "Shark Tank" investments may be a relatively small fraction of Cuban's income, but he takes the show and its companies seriously.

Cuban says he tries to avoid making deals with other Sharks, but when he does, he most likes working with Barbara Corcoran. "Barbara's always got a unique spin on things," he says.

And even though Cuban sees his participation on "Shark Tank" as a service to small businesses and budding entrepreneurs across the US, he's still fiercely competitive when making deals on the show.

When he reaches a deal with another Shark, he says he likes to take charge. "I pretty much take control of the deal, and they can have some of the economics — I don't care."

One Of The Biggest Video Game Franchises Might Come To The iPhone

$

pokemon yellowPokémon is the most successful and lucrative video game franchise in the world, second only to Mario. But despite Nintendo’s firm stance against bringing its games to smartphones and tablets, the makers of Pokémon say there’s still a possibility of playing the game on mobile devices in the future.

Junichi Masuda, the producer and cofounder of Game Freak, which first developed Pokémon, told the London press (via The Telegraph) that Pokemon for iPhone is a “possibility,” even though the higher-ups at Nintendo don’t seem in favor of the idea.

“I’ve got a bit of a resistance from those [safety and security] kind of points of view,” Masuda said, referring to Nintendo’s argument that communication between its 3DS handhelds are far more secure than other mobile devices.

“If it were to reach a stage where I would be happy to hand my iPhone to a 5-year-old and know that, actually, that device and everything about it is safe and secure and I can trust the device in the hands of a 5-year-old, then it would become in the realms of possibility.”

Nintendo has, on numerous occasions, defended its decision not to port its games to mobile devices like iPhones, iPads, and Android devices: Nintendo CEO and President Satoru Iwata said earlier this year that option “is absolutely not under consideration. If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo. [Making mobile games is] probably the correct decision in the sense that the moment we started to release games on smartphones we’d make profits. However, I believe my responsibility is not to short-term profits, but to Nintendo’s mid- and long-term competitive strength.”

That said, a Nintendo patent made public last week reveals the company might be planning to extend emulators for its handheld games — namely the Game Boy — to other devices like smartphones and even seat-back displays in airplanes. Though patents don’t always see the light of day, the patent suggests Nintendo might be easing up a bit on its restrictive policies toward mobile ecosystems.

This move would make sense, since Nintendo is approaching its first annual profit in four years. But the famous video game company is still struggling to make money due to the intense competition in the mobile landscape — Nintendo's handheld games cost about $50, whereas most smartphone games typically sell for $1.99 or 99 cents. Porting some of its classic games, like Pokémon, to iPhone and Android would certainly provide a nice revenue bump.

Bill Cosby Resigns As Temple University Trustee

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bill Cosby resigned Monday as a trustee of Temple University following string of allegations that accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting women over many years.

The 77-year-old entertainer has been a highly visible cheerleader of his beloved alma mater in Philadelphia and a board member since 1982.

"I have always been proud of my association with Temple University. I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of the university and its students. As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees," Cosby said in a statement released by the university.

Board chairman Patrick O'Connor, who accepted Cosby's resignation, told The Associated Press that Cosby does not want to be a distraction to the board.

"The Board of Trustees accepts Dr. Cosby's resignation from the board and thanks him for his service to the university," the university said in its release.

O'Connor had defended Cosby in a civil suit filed by a former Temple basketball employee who accused Cosby of molesting her at his suburban Philadelphia mansion a year earlier. Cosby and the woman settled the lawsuit. More than a dozen other women have come forward since the lawsuit was filed to make similar claims, including several who have gone public this month.

Temple serves about 38,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

'Stone Cold' Steve Austin Does One Thing On His Podcast That He Never Thought He'd Do

Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 23 press conference

When "Stone Cold" Steve Austin first began his professional wrestling career in the late 1980s, the industry had yet to admit to the public that its fights were staged, even if many of its fans had by then caught on to the act.

The World Wrestling Federation's "Dr. D." David Schultz famously slapped reporter John Stossel when he asked him if wrestling was "fake" during a 1984 interview for ABC's "20/20" news program, and Austin himself went through his entire training without being told that the winner of his matches would be decided before either wrestler set foot in the ring.

Today, things are much different. The WWF is now World Wrestling Entertainment, and the company has for decades referred to its shows as "sports entertainment" in a nod to the fact that they are not competitive athletic events like the amateur wrestling bouts that are on display at the Olympics.

But perhaps nothing is as indicative of how much the wrestling business has changed as a new set of special episodes Austin has recently been doing for his podcast, which debuted last year.

In them, Austin does a running commentary fans can listen to while watching his classic matches with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Bret "The Hitman" Hart, during which six-time WWF champion reveals some of the tricks he used to create the illusion of an actual fight.

For instance, Austin explains the technique he used to draw the camera's focus away from The Rock while he was surreptitiously cutting his own forehead open with a razor blade. This way,  it looked to fans watching at home as if The Rock's bleeding was caused by Austin hitting him with a metal bell.

"If you'd have told me that I'd be doing this back in 1990 when I won rookie of the year [from the prestigious Wrestling Observer Newsletter], I'd have said you were full of crap," Austin tells Business Insider. "That's how far things have changed."

Austin says that what he's trying to do in these episodes is strike a balance that allows fans to get an insider's perspective on professional wrestling without revealing too many of the genre's tricks.

In his mind, wrestling is just like a movie in that both art forms rely on an audience that is willing to suspend its disbelief.

And just like "Inside the Actors Studio" hasn't ruined cinema for film nuts, Austin says his insights won't stop wrestling fans from being able to buy into the action they watch on Monday nights.

"When you watch Leonardo DiCaprio or Daniel Day-Lewis, or somebody in a badass action movie, you know you're watching a movie and you want to suspend your disbelief. The same thing still is true with pro wrestling or sports entertainment," he says. "I was just able to lift up the veil a little bit and let you see what was going through my head when these matches were going on."

While the show will feature 47 girls, a select few Angels are promoted more than others.

The lingerie giant is notoriously meticulous about who it chooses as Angels: top models like Miranda Kerr and Erin Heatherton were booted in the past for allegedly not selling enough lingerie.

Here are the seven current Angels who boost sales for Victoria's Secret.

Mark Cuban Has Some Great Advice For Ray Rice And The NFL

ray rice ravens

Despite the appalling video showing Ray Rice punching out his soon-to-be wife in an elevator, some NFL team or another is going to want to hire the former Ravens star now that a judge ruled the NFL can't suspend him indefinitely.

Billionaire Mark Cuban, as the owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, knows something about the world of pro athletes.

On Monday, speaking at Business Insider's Ignition conference, Cuban said if Rice was regularly abusing his wife, "somebody in the NFL knew."

Cuban said that the NFL, like the NBA, has psychologists on staff who can identify behaviors that indicate an abuser.  (Although Rice's wife said in a recent interview that Rice isn't one of those men, doesn't routinely hit her, and this was a one-time, drunken thing.)

Whether it was a one time deal or not, Cuban says that he's not comfortable with the idea of kicking Rice out of the NFL entirely with no help for his problems.

I don't like the idea of just throwing someone to the curb. I don't like the idea of just pushing our organizational problems and saying, 'That was horrible what you did. Just go be horrible for someone else, or keep on being horrible and nobody is ever going to stop you.'

What I would try to do, have tried to do (we haven't had anything that bad), is to say, 'Let's go get you help. We'll deal with whatever legal issues, but you're not stepping onto the court until you're past all that.' It could be alcoholism. It could be whatever.

... You may not want to employ them longer term. But don't just throw them out. Get them help so wherever they go next, even if it's not professional sports, they are in a position to have a career of some sort.

Mark Cuban He says that any team that wants to hire Rice should have a psychologist interview him and make sure his issues are fixed before letting him join a team. If they are, "this is America" where we believe "in second chances."

Cuban also thinks that all sports teams, even in junior high, should be doing a better job of identifying such problems and intervening. He says:

We're not setting standards for men coming into our sports that we need to. If a kid is in AAU [college sports] or he's in junior high and you see these tendencies, there needs to be programs to get them help. ...  If you're abusive in relationships or you have anger issues, we need to say – and I've brought this up on in our meetings   – before you can be on an NBA court, if you've had these things in your background we need to get you counseling.

LEAKED: Hacked Sony Docs Reveal Top 17 Executives' Multimillion-Dollar Salaries

Sony suffered a major hack this week, leading to the online leaks of four of the studio's coming movies and a cyberattack that knocked out the studio's computer network.

The latest attack is a spreadsheet listing the alleged salaries of 17 top paid executives of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Fusion’s Kevin Roose published the spreadsheet, explaining: "I received a link to a public Pastebin file containing the documents from an anonymous e-mailer ... one interesting tidbit caught my eye: a spreadsheet containing the salaries of more than 6,000 Sony Pictures employees, including the company’s top executives."

The below spreadsheet of the 17 highest-paid execs reveals the $3 million salaries of both CEO Michael Lynton and co-chairman Amy Pascal (pictured above).

sony salary spreadsheet

Roose also noted that the list of top salaried executives was 88% white and 94% male.

Of the 17 listed above, only one  Amy Pascal, the co-chair of Sony Pictures Entertainment and chair of SPE's Motion Picture Group  is a woman.

The Interview PosterThe initial attack on Sony occurred a month before the studio is set to release the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy "The Interview," about two journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The Pyongyang government denounced the film as "undisguised sponsoring of terrorism, as well as an act of war" in a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in June.

Sony and security consultants were investigating the possibility that someone acting on behalf of North Korea, possibly from China, was responsible, according to Reuters. A link to North Korea had not been confirmed but also had not been ruled out.

In the initial hack last week, an image of a skeleton appeared on company computers with a message that said, "Hacked by #GOP," with the group behind it calling itself "Guardians of Peace." The message threatened to release "secrets and top secrets" of the company, according to Variety.

The latest attack listing salaries also includes Sony employees' names, job titles, home addresses, bonus plans, and salaries.

TheWrap previously reported the hackers threatened to release private information from the studio if their demands were not met, but those demands were never made clear. They also did not specify a deadline and had not released information before now.

While Sony has no comment on the latest attack, the FBI has launched an investigation with the studio's support.

"The FBI is working with our interagency partners to investigate the recently reported cyber-intrusion at Sony Pictures Entertainment," the FBI said in an emailed statement. "The targeting of public and private sector computer networks remains a significant threat, and the FBI will continue to identify, pursue and defeat individuals and groups who pose a threat in cyberspace."

Victoria's Secret Is Using Taylor Swift To Drive Sales

This year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show featured 47 models, but the star of the show was Taylor Swift.

The show, which airs December 9 at 10 p.m. on CBS, took place Tuesday in London.

Despite elaborate costumes from the models, many fans were gushing about Swift's performance on social media. She performed two songs.

The singer also opened and closed last year's show, where she walked among the models.

Swift's role in the show is outsized: last year's hour-long special featured a segment dedicated to the models like Karlie Kloss praising the singer's talent.

This kind of attention on a performer during the show was unprecedented. Past artists, like Fall Out Boy, merely served as background music.

But by putting Swift on a pedestal, Victoria's Secret was wisely pandering to potential customers — her fans.

Swift has what is possibly the most ardent fan base of any singer. She is adored by millions of teenage girls and young women across the US and worldwide  exactly the type of shopper Victoria's Secret is trying to attract.

Weeks after its release, her album "1989" is already the top record of 2014.

Swift also has serious sway over her fan base.

When Abercrombie & Fitch released a shirt that said "more boyfriends than t.s.," fans protested until it was pulled from shelves. An independent shirt company designed a garment listing her love interests, and promptly received death threats.

Meanwhile, Victoria's Secret is the first big clothing brand to harness Swift's power for good. By hiring Swift to perform and treating her with utmost respect, the brand won the approval of the so-called Swifties.

Victoria's Secret will likely reap big benefits from once again making Swift the star of the show.

North Korea Won't Like It, But Seth Rogen's 'The Interview' Is Hilarious

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Kim Jong-un assassination comedy "The Interview" has been the subject of a lot of controversy. The film was originally scheduled to be released in October, but after North Korea declared the film an "act of war" and threatened a "resolute and merciless" response if the US government failed to stop the film's release, it was delayed until Christmas Day.

While changing an American film based on the demands of a dictator may seem ridiculous, Sony agreed to make minor digital alterations, including covering up "thousands of buttons worn by characters in the film" since they "depict the actual hardware worn by the North Korean military to honor the country's leader."

the interview screen 2After viewing the relentlessly crass and silly finished product, I find it hard to take North Korea's assertions seriously. The film is clearly a comedy far more than it is a statement on foreign policy. While Rogen weaves in plenty of details that don't portray North Korea in very positive light, the movie never feels like an attack on the hermit kingdom.

The opening scene depicting a young Korean girl serenading a gathering of fellow Koreans with sing-songy insults to America sets the bar right away, and the film never takes itself too seriously.

the interview screen 1James Franco plays Dave Skylark, the host of "Skylark Tonight," a tabloid news program that falls more in line with TMZ than CNN. Aaron Rapaport (Rogen) is the show's producer, and after 1,000 episodes of asinine celebrity coverage, he wishes to be taken seriously. When Skylark finds out Kim Jong-un, the supreme leader of North Korea, is a fan of his program, he sets up an exclusive interview with the dictator in North Korea. When the CIA gets wind of this, they bring Skylark and Rapaport in and ask them to assassinate him.

As all good comedies should, 'The Interview" has heart, and the on-screen chemistry between Franco and Rogen keeps everything afloat. The script features plenty of Rogen's trademark witty, crass humor and, just like in "Pineapple Express," the off-the-cuff banter between the two leads never gets old. Lizzy Caplan is also great (but underused) as the CIA agent who "honeypots" the duo into the assassination.

the interview screen 3"The Interview" is full of pop culture references, Hollywood in-jokes, and hysterically funny cameos. Besides the barrage of unexpected celebrities, one of the film's biggest laughs comes from Franco's rendition of a pop song that rivals his Britney Spears piano number from "Spring Breakers." While it's not as inherently self-referential as "This Is The End" since Rogen and Franco aren't playing themselves, there is similar humor at times, as Rogen shows that he isn't afraid to make fun of anyone.

The film is poised to be another surefire hit for Rogen, whose last two starring vehicles ("Neighbors," "This Is The End") were modestly budgeted at $18 million and $32 million respectively and each managed to gross over $100 million domestically. The reported budget for "The Interview" is around $30 million, so factoring in Rogen's track record, the film should have no trouble raking in some serious cash when it opens this Christmas.
