Wu Tang Clan

Thursday marked the first night of New York Fashion Week and with it came two star-studded parties to kick off the week-long fashion festivities.

Method Man, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah of hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan, along with about 20 members of their entourage, took the stage at Milk Studios for the MADE Fashion Week launch party.

Outside the venue nearly 300 people waited in a line that was "backed up to the Hudson." But inside, partygoers indulged in an open Grey Goose bar, took their picture with Elvis, or sat in the new Lexus GS while waiting for Wu-Tang Clan to perform—which they did after midnight.

Down the street, Lindsay Lohan, Alexander Skarsgard, Olivia Wilde, Jason Sudeikis, among others, hit the Boom Boom Room to sip DeLeon tequila and watch The Kills perform.

Wu-Tang Clan take the stage after midnight, proclaiming "f--k the one percent, they can kiss my ass!"

They really got the crowd "jumping."

But those bored with the performance...

Madonna Tells M.I.A. To Get Off Of Her Lawn

MIA

Madonna is none too pleased that M.I.A. stole her headlines by giving the world the middle finger during last Sunday's Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Here's what she told Ryan Seacrest today (via TMZ):

I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity, it seemed negative. It’s such a teenager ... irrelevant thing to do ... there was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point?

We're not sure how she saw "love and unity" in such a trippy performance, but we'll let her go.

"I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it," she added.

Those darn crazy kids and their bird-flipping antics.

mercedes benz fahion week fall 2012

We were on the front lines when Victor Cruz, of the New York Giants, cut the ribbon officially starting Mercedes Benz Fashion Week fall 2012, and Lincoln Center has been booming ever since.

On Day 1, we we explored the tents and took in the Chadwick Bell show. We haven't spotted any major celebrities yet, but we have been enjoying the street fashion.

On Day 2, we had a Gossip Girl moment and went across the street from Lincoln Center to Ed's Chowder House at The Empire Hotel, where the appropriately-themed Nautica men's presentation took place. The music was fun and the place was packed. Understandably so, because head designer Chris Cox was there explaining the looks, and booze were flowing everywhere. There were even some lobsters.

Here's a quick look at what happened during the first two days of Fashion Week.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall 2012 is in full swing at Lincoln Center

We got invited to Chadwick Bell's show. It was his first time showing at Lincoln Center.

Naturally, inside the tents at Mercedes Benz Fashion week, there are some Mercedes.

Here's What Nicolas Cage Has To Say About Those Rumors That He's A Vampire

Nicholas-Cage-Vampire-Late-Show

While promoting his new film, "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," on "The Late Show with David Letterman," Nicolas Cage addressed rumors (and photographic evidence) that claim he is a vampire.

Letterman showed Cage a photo that surfaced on eBay a few weeks ago of a Tennessee man from the 1870s that bore an extremely strong resemblance to the action star.

The man selling the photo had this to say on the website:

"Original c.1870 carte de visite showing a man who looks exactly like Nic Cage. Personally, I believe it's him and that he is some sort of walking undead / vampire, et cetera, who quickens / reinvents himself once every 75 years or so. 150 years from now, he might be a politician, the leader of a cult, or a talk show host."

Watch Cage defend his humanity in the video below.

Meet the Cast Of The Much-Hyped 'Hunger Games'

Hunger Games Jennifer Lawrence

The buzz around "The Hunger Games" has been building for months. The film isn't due out until March 23; however, with tickets going on sale in less than two weeks, we think its as good a time as any to become familiar with the cast of Hollywood's next big money maker.

The film, based on the best-selling series by Suzanne Collins, takes place in a future utopia split into twelve districts where each year two children between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen to participate in a fight to the death.

(Imagine the dystopian future featured in Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" meshed together with the television-based killing competition of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1987 film "The Running Man.")

Although you may have heard Jennifer Lawrence plays the lead, we doubt you know the entire cast. Not only does the film feature a handful of Oscar nominees, but many familiar faces are all grown up and hidden under their costumed characters.

The three lead characters dyed their hair for the film, Elizabeth Banks is covered in pale, white makeup, Stanley Tucci wigs out and a one girl is all grown up from a recent horror flick.

Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdene)

If you find Jennifer Lawrence unrecognizable as a brunette, you're not the only one.

Lawrence turned down the lead in "Savages" for "The Hunger Games," winning the lead role over the likes of Shailene WoodleyEmma Roberts and Abigail Breslin. Not surprising considering Lawrence is no stranger to kicking tail.

In 2010, she made a huge splash with her Oscar nominated performance as the Ozark mountain girl Ree, who hunts down her father in "Winter's Bone."

Lawrence was also in last year's hit "X-Men: First Class" where she played the young Mystique

Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark)

Josh Hutcherson was featured in another 2010 Oscar nominated flick: "The Kids Are All Right."

Mostly, Hutcherson is known for his kid flicks, including "Bridge to Terabithia" and the "Journey to the Center of the Earth" franchise.

In "The Hunger Games," he'll play the male tribute from District 12 alongside Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss.

Alexander Ludwig (Cato)

Alexander Ludwig is known for another film featuring "The Rock." The 19 year old was featured in Disney's 2009 "Race to Witch Mountain."

Yes, that's the same guy. Alexander Ludwig grew up a lot in the past three years. Currently, he's a student at USC.

He'll play one of Katniss' foes, Cato, in "The Hunger Games."

11 Amazing Thank You Notes From Famous People

$

This post originally appeared at Mental Floss

Letters of Note is one of our favorite places to hang out. Since 2009 the site has curated hundreds of interesting letters, telegrams, memos and faxes, from famous people, regular people, and even fictional people. We took advantage of their hard work and rounded up these 11 thank you (and one thanks-for-nothing) letters from their archives.

1. Roald Dahl: Thank You for the Dream You Sent Me

Once upon a time (1989), a little girl named Amy sent a bottle of colored water, oil and glitter to Roald Dahl, who knew right away that this was a dream in a bottle inspired by his book, The BFG. In response, the author penned this short note to his 7-year-old fan

Dear Amy,

I must write a special letter and thank you for the dream in the bottle. You are the first person in the world who has sent me one of these and it intrigued me very much. I also liked the dream. Tonight I shall go down to the village and blow it through the bedroom window of some sleeping child and see if it works.

With love from,
(Signed)
Roald Dahl

2. Neil Armstrong: Thank You for Keeping Me Safe on the Moon

When your job involves leaving the planet to walk on the nearest rocky body, it’s important that the people who build your equipment do things the right way. The enormity of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit engineering team’s task—that is, building a spacesuit that kept a man safe and alive on the moon—was not lost on Neil Armstrong, who wrote this letter for the 25th anniversary of the lunar landing.

To the EMU gang:

I remember noting a quarter century or so ago that an emu was a 6 foot Australian flightless bird. I thought that got most of it right.

It turned out to be one of the most widely photographed spacecraft in history. That was no doubt due to the fact that it was so photogenic. Equally responsible for its success was its characteristic of hiding from view its ugly occupant.

Its true beauty, however, was that it worked. It was tough, reliable and almost cuddly.

To all of you who made it all that it was, I send a quarter century’s worth of thanks and congratulations.

Sincerely,

(Signed) Neil A. Armstrong

3. Conan O'Brien: Thank You for Asking Me to Your Prom

Remember prom? Nikki Simmons probably won’t forget hers, even though the guy she asked had to politely decline. Seems he’d just gotten married and, honestly, he was probably busy.

Dear Nikki –

Thanks for your very flattering offer. It’s great to know I have such a devoted fan out there, and I’m sure you would make a great prom date (I didn’t go to mine – it’s a very sad story).

Unfortunately, I got married recently and my wife doesn’t allow me to go to proms anymore with cute 16 year old girls. Still, it was very cool of you to ask me. Thanks and have a great evening.

Your Friend,

Conan

48 Years In The Legendary Life Of Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston

Two Emmy Awards, Six Grammy Awards, 22 American Music Awards and 30 Billboard Music Awards: Whitney Houston's career as a recording artist, model and actress has been celebrated, to say the least.

After growing up in New Jersey singing in the church choir alongside family members and mentors such as Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin, Houston made it big on her own after record producer Clive Davis signed her in 1983.

Since then, Houston has gone on to become one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone and movies such as "The Bodyguard" on her resumé.

But after worldwide success came erratic behavior and self-confessed drug use.

"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told Diane Sawyer in a now infamous 2002 interview where she coined her catchphrase, "crack is wack."

Just this week, Houston was spotted out with her 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina, at a party in Hollywood and was expected to attend Saturday night's Clive Davis pre-Grammy party.

But on the eve of the Grammy Awards, Houston was found dead in a bathtub in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The superstar was just 48-years-old.

Let's take a look back at Whitney Houston's "so emotional" journey through the years.

1963: Whitney is born in New Jersey to gospel singer Cissy Houston and entertainment exec John Russell Houston, Jr. At the urging of her cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, and godmother, Aretha Franklin, Whitney joins the church choir.

1978: At age 15, Whitney sang background vocals on Chaka Khan's hit single "I'm Every Woman," a song she would later turn into a huge hit for herself on "The Bodyguard" soundtrack.

1981: At age 18 before she was a famous singer, Whitney appeared as a model (and first African American person ever) on the cover of Seventeen Magazine.

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston wasn't just the best-selling R&B artist of the 20th Century.

She also used her compelling screen presence for a string of TV commercials for brands such as AT&T, Diet Coke and Sanyo.

At a very early stage of her career, before she was famous, she appeared in a 1983 campaign for Canada Dry.

And like a lot of American stars who need money but who don't want to damage their artistic credibility in the West, she made a couple of Japanese commercials that weren't seen in the U.S.

This, then, is her commercial back catalog.

Canada Dry - 1983

Diet Coke - 1986

13 Really Strange Movie Marketing Campaigns

It used to be that Hollywood could sell a movie with a simple trailer, a movie poster, and some billboards. Those days are gone.

Click here to see some of the most outside-the-box campaigns >>

As DVRs continue to undermine television commercials, people spend more time online, and young people become more jaded toward traditional advertising media, studios needed to find another way to grab the attention of the movie going public.

Overwhelmingly, their solution to the problem has gone something like this: reach fans online or in the real world and present them with something that causes them to question it's validity.

The Blair Witch Project, on its shoe-string budget, was one of the first to employ such tactics. Since then, studios seem to raise the stakes each year, creating bigger and more involved stunts. This year, the ad agency for the movie Chronicle constructed a set of motorized gliders that made it appear as if three people were flying over New York.

Campaigns need to be outrageous enough to make people stop and stare (and send it to their friends via Facebook), but can't be so over-the-top that it's obvious it's an ad.

Chronicle

At the end of January, hundreds of New Yorkers were fooled into believing that three people were flying over their city's most beloved landmarks. In fact, what they were seeing were people-shaped air crafts flying around the city to promote the movie Chronicle

Thinkmodo, the agency who created the stunt, was inspired by the three main characters in the film whom all have the ability to fly.

While only a small number of people saw the actual stunt, videos quickly started circling the web and the film was first at the box office its opening weekend.

Zombieland

"What do you want? Brains. When do you want them? Now." The cry could be heard as a crowd of the undead walked the streets during Comic Con 2009.

While not out of the ordinary these days, especially with the success of "The Walking Dead", zombie walks were unique when Sony sponsored this one to promote their comedy Zombieland.

What started as a stunt at ComicCon, spread across the country, as Sony offered free advanced screenings of the movie in select cities. There was no cost for the screening, but viewers were asked to dress in their zombie best and participate in the zombie walk up to the theater.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

During 4th of July weekend in 2009, beach goers at the Jersey Shore had a guest drop in, literally. Instead of using the traditional airplane-pulled banner to market the film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Joe actually rode in on a helicopter.

Videogum.com recounts one beach bum's reaction:

"It was very cool as it felt like GI Joe had come to life for me and [it was] effective as EVERYONE I ran into on the Jersey Shore was talking about it."

Movies China

"Transformers 3" dominated China's box office in 2011, grossing a total of $172 million, according to Gravity Group.

That's over $100 million more than China's highest grossing movie "Flowers of War," which brought in $71 million and starred westerner Christian Bale

"Kung Fu Panda" came in second with $95 million and "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" came in third with $73 million.

However, 2011 was not a bad year for the Chinese movie industry. Gravity Group reported that China produced 588 films in 2011, which generated 53.6 percent of total revenues at $1.11 billion. The total box office revenue was $2.08 billion, up 28.9 percent from the 2010 revenue of $1.61 billion.

In fact, China's box office revenue has doubled since 2009.

In 2011, China also built 803 new cinemas, adding 3,030 new screens bringing its total number of movie screens to 9,230. Yet, China still has ways to go to compete with US and its 39,233 movie screens.

George ClooneyGeorge Clooney has lived in his Studio City home since 1995, when he purchased it from Stevie Nicks.

"I was in the second season of 'ER' living in a little house and I thought, well maybe it's time to get a little bit larger house off the street so I wouldn't fall prey to every photographer," explained Clooney.

About 17 years later, Clooney is finally opening up his doors to CBS' Lara Logan and Charlie Rose as a part of the TV special, "Person to Person" and giving us a sneak peek into his house that he says is very much a home.

"A home is a place where your family and friends are a part of," says Clooney. "That's one of the wonderful things about where I've been for so long, I've been here for almost 20 years and it's filled with good friends and family members."

And after growing up constantly moving from house to house, Clooney strongly believes in being a home owner.

"To me it was a signing of making it to be able to buy your own home," says Clooney. "Owning land is a good thing. I worry about making money off of money, I like owning land."

Wondering What 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Is All About? Watch The Just-Released Trailer

Abraham-Lincoln-Vampire-Hunter-Trailer

If ever a time for a period vampire movie, we suppose 'tis now.

In the new film, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," (we're not kidding), Abe Lincoln is reimagined as a man out to hunt down evil vampires under the guise of leadership.

Honest Abe becomes president and starts the Civil War against slavery not just because slavery is immoral, of course, but also because the slave trade was apparently used as a food source for vampires.

President by day, hunter by night. Sounds ridiculous, right? Well that's the point.

The film is adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, the very same author who wrote the other bizarre bestseller "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" (which coincidentally is also being turned into a film). The author wrote the script, as well.

Newcomer Benjamin Walker stars as Lincoln while "Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov will helm the film. Bekmambetov is well-versed in the vampire genre (see Russian films "Night Watch" and "Day Watch") so  expect all the crazy, humor and violence of "Wanted" plus a whole lot more.

Will you watch the film when it comes out June 22?

Check out the trailer below, it will blow your mind.
