Martha Stewart modeling picture

Before she was the queen of American home life, Martha Stewart was a model.

Stewart began modeling at age 15, and continued when she was a student at Barnard College as a way to supplement her income.

Her clients included everyone from Unilever to Chanel.

It's not difficult to see why Stewart excelled at the job--she's gorgeous.

Stewart's company shared these images with us exclusively. Some have never been seen before.

Stewart was a student at Barnard College for most of her modeling career.

Stewart had a college scholarship to Barnard, but living in New York is expensive, so she modeled.

She said she could make up to $50 an hour modeling (a lot of money at the time)!

Nora Ephron's Son Says His Mother Kept Quiet About Her Illness For Business Reasons

Nora Ephron

When Nora Ephron succumbed to acute myeloid leukemia last June and died at age 71, the entertainment and media world was stunned. Part of the shock was that her illness had been kept out of the public sphere and her battles with the disease that claimed her life had been waged in private.

That was uncharacteristic for Ephron, the writer and director of "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." The romantic comedy maven became a household name in part by drawing on her troubled marriage to philandering Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein in her best-selling roman à clef  "Heartburn." As Ephron herself frequently said, (quoting her mother, screenwriter Phoebe Ephron) “everything is copy."

Also read: Nora Ephron: From 'When Harry Met Sally' to 'Julie & Julia,' She Made It OK to Eat

So why had she decided not to turn her health issues into a memoir or column, as her friend Christopher Hitchens did with his own cancer fight?

The answer comes in a long and heartfelt personal essay about Ephron's final days in this week's New York Times Magazine, courtesy of her son, writer Jacob Bernstein.

Ephron was worried that "coming clean" with friends and colleagues would have a deleterious impact on her career.

"Certainly, she could continue writing books and essays," Bernstein writes. "But getting a movie made would be impossible, because no insurance company would sign off on it. Arguably, she could do a play, but bringing it to Broadway would be difficult, given that the development process takes years."

Also readTom Hanks to Make Broadway Debut in New Nora Ephron Play

There was another reason, as well. Ephron's wit and myriad interests in everything from food to politics made her one of the most coveted tablemates in Hollywood. Yet, she was worried that going public with her disease would be a conversation killer.

"...what my mother didn’t want was to have her illness define her, turning every conversation into a series of 'how are you?'s," Bernstein writes.

As Bernstein implies, Ephron's personal ordeal may have influenced one of her final projects. "Lucky Guy," a new Broadway play starring Tom Hanks, opens next month. It centers on New York City columnist Mike McAlary, who got a Pulitzer Prize-winning scoop about police brutality after receiving a colon cancer diagnosis.

Everything is copy, indeed.

audi r8 e-tron tony stark iron man 3 robert downey jr

The Tony Stark of the "Iron Man" films may be inspired by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, but in the latest installment of the franchise, the inventor-playboy-superhero will be driving an electric Audi.

In the recently released "Iron Man 3" trailer, Stark is shown driving the R8 e-tron, the electric version of Audi's supercar.

Product placement in a film that revolves around futuristic technology, with a healthy dose of fast-paced action, is a natural fit, General Manager of Brand Marketing for Audi of America Loren Angelo says:

"Similar to the position of the R8 an an innovation leader, Iron Man's character consistently evolves throughout the trilogy as he masterminds new trends in technology and engineering."

The Germany luxury brand was also the ride of choice in the first two installments of the film. The R8, R8 Spyder, A8, S5, and Q7 have all been featured, according to Audi.

Plans for production of the R8 e-tron were put on ice last October, but were back on track as of January.

Steve Jobs was kind of a jerk. But in an endearing way.

From BloombergBusinessWeek's big story on Disney buying Star Wars, there is this nugget on Jobs relationship with Disney and CEO Bob Iger after Iger acquired Pixar:

The transaction gave Disney a new source of hit movies. Jobs also became a Disney board member and its largest shareholder. Periodically he would call Iger to say, “Hey, Bob, I saw the movie you just released last night, and it sucked,” Iger recalls. Nevertheless, the Disney CEO says that having Jobs as a friend and adviser was “additive rather than the other way around.”

Chelsea Handler's Hilarious Theory On Taylor Swift's Love Life

Chelsea Handler Bravo Watch What Happens Live

Chelsea Handler appeared on Andy Cohen's late night Bravo talk show "Watch What Happens Live" Wednesday night where she revealed her theory on Taylor Swift's multitide of relationships.

The conversation was prompted when Cohen asked Handler which team she was on in the current Swift vs. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler feud after the singer recently said "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women" in response to a joke the comedic duo made during the Golden Globes.

“I think [Swift's] was a bold statement, but I’m not on anyone’s side because I just don’t care enough,” Handler told Cohen.

“I like that she’s being that vociferous about something that she thinks they were out to get her and they were clearly making a joke just about her demeanor, which is embarrassing. I mean, she’s just dated so many men,” Handler added.

The “Chelsea Lately” host went on to explain, “My theory about Taylor Swift is that she’s a virgin, that everyone breaks up with her because they date her for two weeks and she’s like, ‘I’m not gonna do it.’ And they’re like, ‘Oh, well, forget it. Then I don’t want to date you.’”

Handler continues, “And they think they’re gonna have sex with her… every guy thinks they’re going to devirginize her, and they’re not. She’s never going to get devirginized, ever, ever, ever, ever.”

George Lucas Was Working On A New 'Star Wars' Trilogy Before Disney Purchased Lucasfilm

george lucas star wars

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion last fall, one of the most exciting bits of news was that we would be getting a new "Star Wars" trilogy.

And fans were even more excited about getting episodes VII, VIII, and IX because George Lucas wouldn't be behind the new movies.

Instead, his title on the new projects is a vague "creative consultant" role.

However, it turns out we may very well be seeing Lucas' visions (in some form) for the trilogy on the big screen.

A new Bloomberg Businessweek article reveals Lucas was working on treatments for new films before inking a deal with Disney in October.

Basically, Lucas laid the foundation for the future "Star Wars" films out for Disney before any negotiations.

bloomberg businessweek disneyPrior to Iger and Lucas discussing the Disney deal, Lucas already had talks with Kathleen Kennedy to head Lucasfilm, "The Empire Strikes Back" screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan was called upon as a consultant, and preliminary talks with the original cast to appear in the future films took place.

Yes, it's looking more and more likely that all of those rumors about the original cast of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford joining the new trilogy is indeed true.

Lucas let a little bit slip in his interview:

“We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation," said Lucas. "So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ … Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.”

So, when Lucas called Iger in June 2012, one of the primary reasons behind the Lucasfilm buy was to attain rights to Lucas' rough sketches for the movies.

After Disney purchased Lucasfilm, Lucas gave those treatments over to the Mouse House with very specific instructions.

From Bloomberg Businessweek:

"Once Lucas got assurances from Disney in writing about the broad outlines of the deal, he agreed to turn over the treatments—but insisted they could only be read by Horn and Kevin Mayer, Disney’s executive vice president for corporate strategy. ‘We promised,’ says Iger. ‘We had to sign an agreement."

Now, Lucas' role as a "consultant" on the film makes perfect sense. The story outlines for Episodes VII, VIII, and IX are essentially his own.

Let the Lucas legacy live on.

We know the layout of Monica's kitchen on "Friends" and the exact color of Homer's sofa on "The Simpsons."

But did you ever wonder what the other parts of their homes looked like?

Artist Iñaki Aliste Lizarralde has created amazingly complete floor plans for some of our favorite shows over the years, and was kind enough to share them with us (they're also available on Etsy).

Get to know your favorite TV characters in a whole new light.

Ted Mosby is in the eighth season of explaining to his kids how he met their mother. Here's Ted's NYC apartment, which he shared with a rotation of other characters on the show.

HBO's "Sex and the City" was loosely based on a book by Candace Bushnell. Carrie Bradshaw lived in this spacious one-bedroom on the Upper East Side, although it must have been tough to afford on a writer's salary.

Monica and Rachel shared this fantastic apartment on "Friends." Monica supposedly inherited it from her grandmother; otherwise we can't imagine how she would have been able to afford it.

Why Hollywood Is Having A Terrible Year

$

jack the giant slayerIt's no secret the box office is hurting right now.

We're into the second week of March, and only one film, Universal's "Identity Thief," has managed to have both an opening weekend over $30 million and reach the $100 million mark at theaters.

At this same point last year, three films ("Safe House," "The Vow," and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island") surpassed that milestone. Meanwhile, last year's highest-opening weekend was taken by Dr. Seuss film "The Lorax" earning a hefty $70 million upon debut.

What's going on this year?

For one thing, there have been far too many adult movies in theaters. Since January, there have been 14 R-rated films limiting the younger audience going out to theaters.

8 of the 14 have had disastrous opening weekends all under $10 million.

The lowest opening grosses of the year so far included Sylvester Stallone's "Bullet to the Head," which brought in $4.5 million, star-stuffed "Movie 43" with $4.8 million, and Jason Statham's latest action thriller "Parker" earning $7 million.

Even "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," a film with "Avengers" star Jeremy Renner which is based off a childhood tale and had the appeal to draw younger teens, was rated R. The film has fared better, grossing $181 million worldwide.

Last year, by the same time, there were nine R-rated films in theaters including "Safe House" with Denzel Washington which earned more than $100 million after a month in theaters.  Another three of those films, "Project X," "Underworld Awakening," and "The Devil Inside," went on to earn more than $100 million worldwide.

One of the latest R-rated flicks to hit theaters, "21 and Over" was expected to piggyback off the success of last year's low-budget "Project X," but fell flat at theaters opening week with $8.8 million.

There were also more kid and family-friendly films last year. "The Secret World of Arrietty," "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," "The Lorax," and "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" in 3D all debuted early 2012. Plus, Martin Scorsese's Oscar picture, "Hugo," was still in theaters.

escape from planet earthCurrently, the only new kid's flick at theaters is The Weinstein Company's alien film, "Escape from Planet Earth."   Meanwhile, "Wreck-It Ralph" and a 3D return of "Monsters Inc." from Disney are still playing in theaters from late last year.

However, the box-office slump could boil down to something much simpler: the movies just aren't that good.

Warner Bros. executive vice president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein told TheWrap the films aren't living up to the hype.

"There's no mystery as to why the box office is down," Goldstein said. "It's the movies. They just haven't done it for audiences, but that's the saving grace, too. A couple of hits and things will be back on track."

This weekend, $200 million budget "Oz the Great and the Powerful" hits theaters, hoping to turn the box office around.

The Wolf Pack Return To Las Vegas In First 'Hangover Part III' Teaser Trailer

There's Still One Thing That Many Porn Stars Refuse To Do...

$

Heidi Klum SealAdult film stars are known for pushing the limits. They get paid to perform sexual acts many have never even heard of, let alone seen before.

Porn stars will do most anything, it seems, except for one act that is still taboo within the industry: interracial sex.

Adult film star Aurora Snow wrote a thoughtful article this week for The Daily Beast, in which she reveals one of the first questions she was asked upon entering the 'biz: "Do you do black guys?” [For the record, she does.]

It's not a requirement within the industry to sleep with people of other races; in fact, it can even be seen as a career breaker  not maker.

“Racism exists, and it exists in porn,” award-winning porn star Kristina Rose confirmed to The Beast.

Alexis Texas Porn StarThe topic was brought to light recently when fans began to notice that popular porn star Alexis Texas has appeared in hundreds of adult films  but never with someone who isn't white like her.

Texas refused to comment for the Beast's article, but she isn't alone with her preferences.

"According to LA Direct Models’ online listings, only about 20 percent of its performers are willing to film interracial scenes," reports the Beast. "Another agency, Spiegler Girls, is more typical of top agents: 75 percent to 80 percent of its performers say they shoot interracial material."

Aurora Snow porn starSnow confirmed the stats, saying "My experience has taught me that the adult audience is far more progressive than porn-industry leaders."

Why is interracial sex on tape still taboo in the industry? Here are a few reasons:

  1. Size. "One reason for some actresses’ reluctance might be size," says Snow. "The sheer size of these guys can be intimidating."
  2. Career anxiety. "Most girls in the industry hear at some point from their agent or another performer that an actress can increase the longevity of her career by refusing interracial scenes," adds Snow.
  3. Pay. A current myth, alluded to in Kanye West’s song “Hell of a Life,” is that directors will pay a girl less once she has shot interracial scenes. As TMZ bluntly states: "More black equals less green."
  4. Stereotypes. "Consumers are still buying stereotypes. An interracial porn shoot frequently portrays the big black man with the tiny white girl. This remains a popular marketing strategy," says Snow.
  5. Family. “The No. 1 reason I hear,” adult actor agent Mark Spiegler tells The Beast, "and that doesn’t mean it’s true, is ‘my family wouldn’t like me doing it.’” Snow confirms, "I’ve met a handful of girls who thought their families would be more OK with finding out they did porn than finding out they did interracial porn."
  6. New territory. “Sometimes the first black guy they have been exposed to is in the industry, says Tee Reel, a black adult performer-turned-agent. “It’s not as if they have some racist gene. They aren’t anti-black, they just never had the opportunity."

interracial couple in poolMark Spiegler is starting to notice an industry change, though.

“In the old days, you start out slow and work your way up. But now the more you do the better. Sasha Grey and Katsumi started out doing interracial; it doesn’t seem to have hurt them," he says.

“Some agents will charge a premium for girls who do interracial," says Spiegler. "But we don’t do that: it’s the same rate for noninterracial.”

Instead, Spiegler argues that more work equals higher rates — not the color of skin of the person you're performing with on-screen.

Black performer-turned-agent Tee Reel tells the Beast: “As a black man, I don’t take it personally when a girl says, ‘I don’t want to do interracial.’ In the business, some girls who say they don’t do interracial I’ve actually had sex with off camera."

The Newest Version Of SimCity Is Awesome

simcity

On Tuesday, EA and Maxis launched one of the most-anticipated games of the year, its latest installment of SimCity.

It's been more than a decade since the release of SimCity 4. The newest version allows you to play online which, so far, has resulted in a bit of chaos with down servers and glitches when trying to connect.

If you're not familiar with the premise of the video game, the goal is simple: successfully build the largest thriving city with the biggest population. (Of course, there's no prize at the end for building the largest city. Rather, the idea is just to have fun constructing, destructing, and dictating a town full of simulated people at your discretion.)

Despite the hiccups, when the game is up and running, reviewers are loving it!

It looks ages better than previous versions.

IGN reports on how super-detailed the game looks:

"It starts with the elegant, mostly intuitive interface, and extends to graphical nuances like sunlight reflecting off solar panels and the unique ambient sounds that play every time you select a building like a police station."

Here's the original PC SimCity in 1989:

simcity 1989

Here's SimCity 4 from 2003:

simcity 4

And, here's the latest one:

simcity

You will never want to leave your computer screen … ever.

Polygon:

"You may play a hundred hours of this game without noticing, but behind the curtain, SimCity is working furiously to hook you — and keep you hooked. And in my case, it was enormously successful at both."

Slate

"I’ve been playing SimCity since late last week, and, like every previous version, I’ve found it to be unyieldingly addictive. (I’ve got a 2-year-old and a 3-week-old at home; my wife texted me to let me know they’re doing fine.) But SimCity isn’t just habit-forming. It’s also deeper and more realistic than any other sim game I’ve played."

IGN's Greg Miller has posted a story with the headline, "Let's Play SimCity Every Day Forever." The idea is he'll play the game every day with 10 minute commentary.

Why?

It's simple to navigate.

Again, Polygon:

"The user interface is intuitive enough to make finding what you need amidst a potentially complex array of options easy even at the most frenetic of times. I only very rarely felt lost for what button to press or which menu to find what service under."

Mashable:

"There is a great tutorial included which has you tackling the problems of an already built city to understand the game's basic systems, but it doesn't scratch the surface of all the cool ways to explore and build up your city."

However, that doesn't mean it's all seamless.

"Roads don't always want to connect because of proximity to another intersection, or crowded terrain, so you may have to occasionally bulldoze and redraw a few areas. I found placing the largest structures often difficult."

It's fun!

You can experience tornadoes ...

tornado simcity

Alien invasions ...

alien invasion

Meteorites ...

simcity meteorite

And a zombie apocalypse. Sure, these features were available in previous SimCity games, but it sounds even more fun in this version.

Multiplayer.

Everyone's connected through leaderboards and global markets. And, you can see other people's cities and merge with other player's creations.

IGN points out this is both good and bad:

"You can share a region with up to 15 other mayors. It does work, and with lots of coordination it can work well, but in the multiplayer sessions I've played so far it had nearly as many drawbacks as advantages ... I'm going to go ahead and predict that, much like Blizzard found with Diablo 3, Maxis will soon discover that the majority of SimCity players will want to play by themselves most of the time."

It's like The Sims meets SimCity.

Unlike before, you can track what each individual Sim in your city is doing, similar to EA and Maxis' breakout game The Sims.

Slate"SimCity simulates discrete urban behavior, tracking how every person and every object interacts. 'We now have every car and every person and every garbage truck and every criminal represented by an autonomous agent in the environment.'"

Not everyone was impressed, though.

Two editors at Arstechnica found that cities can only have smaller populations before compromising game functionality.

"I've reached a functional limit around 200,000 people. I have no more space," said ar gaming editor, Kyle Orland. "I've reached a functional limit around 200,000 people. I have no more space."

The Biggest Downsides:

1. The game requires you to ALWAYS be online.

To play SimCity you need to be connected to EA's servers in order to download and play the game. The plus side is that this allows gamers to interact and connect their cities.

However, in order to save or virtually do anything, you need to be connected. Problems, glitches, and save issues occur when servers aren't working. Currently, EA and Maxis have been working to add updates and more servers to fix this problem.

2. Resources are finite. Whereas, you used to have an unlimited supply of water, oil, coal, etc., now, once you're out of resources your city — and the innocent Sims living in it — are doomed!

3. You can't play it on the Mac ... yet. Sorry Apple users, it's for Windows PCs only. Don't fret, Maxis says the Mac version will hit stores later this spring.

You can download the game on Origin HERE.

'Oz The Great And Powerful' Looks Like It's Going To Have A Huge Weekend

$

Oz the great and powerfulDisney's "Oz the Great and Powerful" comes out today in theaters and its expected to be the largest opening weekend at the box office of the year so far.

It won't be that difficult for "Oz" to claim the top spot.

The box office has been in a major slump for the past month and a half

The largest opening gross so far has been $34.6 million from Melissa McCarthy's "Identity Thief."

Disney, of course, has a lot riding on the line with its $200 million budget for "Oz."

Despite some early negative buzz (even we questioned whether the new "Oz" may be the next "John Carter" flop), it looks like the film may do even better than estimates tracking the film as high as $85 million

Here's why:

  • As of early this morning, the prequel to the 1939 classic accounted for 79% of all ticket sales on FandangoNow, the film is tracking for 85% of all ticket sales today on the ticket seller.
  • According to a survey by the site, 66% of moviegoers are planning to see the film with their families.
  • Fandango has confirmed with us that "Oz" is its largest movie in presales this year.

Of course, there's not much else out this weekend.

The other big film out this weekend is Lionsgate's "Emperor" following Tommy Lee Jones as General MacArthur (Jones) after the surrender of Japan during World War II.
