Look At The Incredible 'Hunger Games' Costumes On The Fashion Tumblr 'Capitol Couture'

effie hunger games

Lionsgate has launched "Capitol Couture," a Tumblr that is exclusively dedicated to the fashion of "The Hunger Games."

Costumes played a huge role in the best-selling book series, so fans have been anxiously anticipating any glimpse into the adapted movie's wardrobe for months. Thus far, the fashion Tumblr boasts the most in-depth look into the world of Panem, the dystopian society in which the Hunger Games take place. Ever since the site went live Tuesday, fashion bloggers have been hooked, perusing Effie Trinket (an unrecognizable Elizabeth Banks)'s closet full of Alexander McQueen.

"Capitol Couture" is Lionsgate's latest move in their aggressive, online marketing campaign for the highly anticipated film.

Last month, to celebrate the 100-day mark until the film's March 23 release, Lionsgate hid 100 puzzle pieces on 100 different sites around the web. (Fans immediately began to piece the puzzle together and Tweet out the solution).

The Mary Sue, however, has uncovered an interesting puzzle piece behind Lionsgate's own digital campaign: All of the film's virtual marketing sites are registered with a ".pn" domain — ostensibly to mimic Panem.

The thing is, ".pn" is owned by a group of islands in the British Overseas Territories called the Pitcairn Islands, population 50. According to Styleite, Lionsgate now owns at least 36 .pn domains.

Why Didn't Disney Get Any Oscar Love?

Disney-logo

When nominations for Best Animated Feature were announced this morning, we had to recheck the noms to make sure we heard right. "Kung Fu Panda 2," "Puss in Boots," "Rango," "A Cat in Paris," and "Chico & Rita."

Yes, Disney was left off the Oscar ballot for Best Animated Feature this year—not that this should come as any surprise. "Cars 2" wasn’t spectacular by any means — actually, it was pretty dreadful.

The film suffered from a ridiculous spy side plot a la James Bond and displayed an action sequence and explosions so over-the-top, one couldn't help but wonder if Michael Bay was in the driver seat. These along with crude humor helped earn the film a 39% rating on movie reviewer Rotten Tomatoes and the title of first Pixar dud.

Sure there were a few shockers this morning—David Fincher didn't get a directing nod for "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," Albert Brooks was robbed, and Jonah Hill received his first nominationbut, Disney, forget Cars, left off the Oscar bids is a big deal.

This marks the first time since the award's creation in 2001 that Pixar/Disney was left out of the Oscar race for Best Animated Feature. The mouse powerhouse has taken home seven of the Academy's 11 total awards. A nod and win this year, would have secured Disney five years in a row for Best Animated Feature. This year's omission goes to show not even a big-name shoo-in is safe from being snubbed.

Even Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" which Roger Ebert listed as one of the Best Films of 2011 was also surprisingly left off the nominations list.

Let this be a lesson to Pixar who started going a little too sequel happy ("Toy Story," the upcoming "Monsters Inc." prequel, "Monsters University") in the past few years. They should have taken a cue from DreamWorks.

Let's hope "Brave," "The Secret World of Arrietty," or "Frankenweenie," due out this year, will fare better at the box office and in the eyes of critics.

Wait, 'Kung Fu Panda 2' Got An Oscar Nomination?

Kung-Fu-Panda-2

After snubs by the Golden Globes, the Broadcast Film Critics awards, and the BAFTAs (the British version of the Oscars), "Kung Fu Panda 2" has received an Oscar nomination.

It's not a complete shock for the animal comedy to get a nod in the Best Animated feature category.

After all, the first "Kung Fu Panda" was an Oscar nominee as well. Sure, it lost out to Pixar's "Wall-E", but now that Pixar is out of the race for the first time in six years, it might be easier to best nominees like "Rango" and "Puss in Boots."

Box office results may have also helped. The film raked in $666 million -- more money than big-budget action adventures like "X-Men: First Class", "Super 8" and "Green Lantern".

It was a smash with critics as well. The Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern said, "Hardly a scene goes by that isn't visually striking or kinetically thrilling."

Here's What You Can Learn From Teresa, The New Jersey 'Housewife' Who's $11 Million In Debt

Teresa Giudice

This post originally appeared at Girls Just Wanna Have Funds.

If you haven’t heard about Teresa Giudice by now, where have you been?  She’s only the latest reality TV star to get caught up in trying to keep up with her rich friends by amassing 11 million in debt.

I generally like Teresa’s bad a$$ character from The Real Housewives of New Jersey.

She says what’s on her mind and she means it, albeit littered with expletives I wouldn’t say around children.  But, I have to wonder why this woman who plays such a “boss” bitch” character on a reality show didn’t play the same role in her marital finances?

Recently, she sat down with In Touch magazine to discuss her path to bankruptcy.  Yep, she and her husband declared bankruptcy to the tune of $11 million.

Essentially, she says they racked up the debt via fancy parties for the kids, 6 figure car ie their leased Maserati where they still owe $60,000, extravagant shopping trips with her friends and their over the top gold and marble home.

Their bankruptcy petition, filed in federal court in Newark, New Jersey, lists $11.8 million in debts. That includes $5.8 million on various business investments made by Joe, $2.6 million in mortgages on three homes, and $12,000 owed to a fertility clinic.

The couple also list $104, 000 in credit card bills, including $20,000 to top-tier department stores like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, and $2,300 to the phone company.- Radaronline

What can you learn from Teresa?

Communication: You need to be on the same page as your spouse about finances, even if he isnt.  She didn’t get the hint when he started telling her to ease up on the spending, but he should have sat her down and told her exactly how dire their financial situation was at the time.

Know Thy Self: If you’re buying on credit then you can’t afford it.  Doesn’t matter how long the credit line, at the end of the month you still have to pay it back to the bank.

You Home Isn’t An ATM:  My guess is that they used some of the equity from their homes to finance their lavish lifestyle.  Leveraging the equity during good times helped them live the life they love so much.  Again, living on borrowed money they would never be bale to pay back.

Teach Your Children The Value of Money:  Watching the show you would think this was the last day on earth for the kids.  She went overboard with spending on their parties, clothing and anything else they want.   As a result, sorry to say it but her children were like rabid brats who didn’t understand the word NO.  And rightfully so, she rarely said no even with their strained finances looming. Parents often say to me “well I want my children to have more than I did”.  Those are your wants, not your children’s.  Separate the two and understand that you children just want your unconditional love and a stable living environment.

I sincerely hope they learn lessons from this process but something tells me they won’t any time soon.  Keeping up with the Manzos seems to be top on their list of priorities.   By the way, I love Caroline!

Moneyball Was Nominated For Best Picture, Here Are Six Myths About It That You Should Forget

$

0

Moneyball

The Academy Award nominations were announced today, and "Moneyball," the movie based on the behind-the-scenes book about the Oakland A's, has been nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture.

Michael Lewis' book came out in 2003, and thanks to Brad Pitt and Company, it may now be the most important baseball book ever, even surpassing Jim Bouton's ground-breaking "Ball Four" which was released in 1970.

"Moneyball" has helped popularize a growing trend in baseball. While the gap in baseball is widening between the haves and the have-nots. Some teams outside of New York, Boston, Chicago or Los Angeles have chosen a sling and a rock rather than accept their fate as second-class citizens in an Evil Empire.

But considering the popularity of the book and the movie, it is still a highly misunderstood book. And nearly a decade after its release, several myths still linger.

Myth: Billy Beane Invented "Moneyball"

Sabermetrics is the term for advanced baseball stats that attempts to derive empirical and objective answers to complex baseball questions. Through the use of Sabermetrics one can get a better sense of which players have performed the best, which players are more likely to get better, which players are likely to regress, and the players that are more likely to maintain their current level of play.

And if a general manager is able to identify these trends, they are better suited to find players that will help their team win without having to spend a lot of money. In other words, Sabermetrics is a form of "Moneyball." And Sabermetrics was invented long before Billy Beane was running the A's.

Sabermetrics was a form of baseball statistics that was pioneered by many people. But the most famous voice early on was Bill James.

Myth: The "Moneyball" System Is About Players With Strong OBPs

This is the biggest myth that still lingers today. At the time the book was being written, it just so happened that players with a strong affinity for getting on base (high OBP) were overlooked by most teams. Teams were more focused on players with high batting averages and lots of power. Few teams cared about a player that drew a lot of walks.

Of course, now every team values a player that gets on base. And as a result, players with high OBPs make a lot more money and are no longer undervalued. But that doesn't mean "Moneyball" is dead.

Instead of looking for a player with a high OBP, maybe Beane and other teams are looking for players that play great defense. Or maybe they are looking for players that never get caught stealing. Or maybe they are looking for relief pitchers that can work more than one inning.

It doesn't matter what the type of player is. What is important is that those players have a certain amount of value that may not be recognized by most other teams.

Myth: "Moneyball" Is A Small-Market Strategy

"Moneyball" is important to small-market teams as a way to level the playing field. But it is not a small-market strategy. In fact, every big league team now has a sabermetrics department. Of course some teams may use that information more or differently, but it is certainly not limited to the low-payroll teams.

In fact, Bill James, one of the fathers of sabermetrics, is now employed by Evil Empire Jr, the Boston Red Sox.

Dry spells can last a few weeks or months, maybe even a year, but decades?

Tim Gunn revealed he hasn't had sex in 29 years. And, he's just fine with it.

"Do I feel like less of a person for it? No. Not even remotely," the "Project Runway" star told Dr. Tiffanie Davis Henry on ABC's talk show, "The Revolution."

So, why did the 58-year-old fashion guru go cold turkey? Gunn attributed his abstinence to psychological issues from a prior relationship and for fear of his life at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic.

"I think a lot of people simply retreated because they were concerned about their health. I certainly was," Gunn said.

Despite an absent love life, Gunn made it work saying he's "a perfectly happy, fulfilled individual."

Aziz Ansari

During Saturday's Bing speaker series at Sundance, we watched Aziz Ansari get the third degree from "Extra" host Maria Menounos.

Ansari is most well-known for playing Tom Haverford on NBC's "Parks and Recreation," hosting the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, and calling Kanye West and Jay-Z close personal friends.

He has a self-deprecating, autobiographical sense of humor, but is ready to take on more dramatic TV and film roles. And being the self-admitted workaholic that he is, the actor/comedian also says he is far from ready for marriage and babies.

While Ansari gave Menounos a hard time for some of her more softball questions and told the TV host he refused to follow her on Twitter, we did learn a few things, well, 20, to be exact, about the increasingly popular comedian; including don't leave your cell phone on your chair during his speaker series—because if it rings, he will answer it in front of the entire audience and put you on speaker phone.

1.) Favorite TV shows: 'Breaking Bad,' 'Mad Men,' 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' and 'Louie.'

2.) Favorite recent movies: 'Inception,' 'Bridesmaids' and 'Bill Cunningham New York.'

3.) 'Amy Poehler and my little brother' are the funniest people he knows.

Designers will often try to outshine their collections from previous years with risky prints, bold colors or sky-high hair on the runway.

But Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel decided to bring attention to his Chanel Haute-Couture Spring/Summer 2012 collection during Paris Fashion Week by showing it on an airplane (via Fashionista).

Blogger Derek Blasberg tweeted that Lagerfeld wanted to show his collection on a plane instead of "a boring old movie," Fashionista reported.

Alas, the plane was non-functional: set designers spent five days constructing the interior, which had "an extra-wide 164-foot aisle, 180-degree swivel seats for 250 high-profile guests, double-C monogrammed carpet, a holographic cockpit, and a slatted roof that revealed a vista of clouds," according to Inhabitat.

George Clooney Says 'F--- You' To His Coffee Commercial Critics

george-clooney-nespresso

According to George Clooney, even Academy Award nominees need a day job. For him, it's doing high-paid coffee commercials overseas.

During Newsweek's 2012 Oscar Roundtable, Clooney discussed his career choices:

I'm trying to make movies in my life, and particularly in the position I'm in, that last longer than opening weekend. That's it, that's my whole goal. I don't have to make money, I do films for scale and then you know, I go do coffee commercials overseas and I make a lot of money doing those, so I get to live in a nice house.

Nice house? Mansion on Lake Como? Potato, pot-ah-to.

But question Clooney about pimping himself to Swiss coffee makers,* and you and the former Batman are going to have some issues.

"I don't give a shit," Clooney continued (as a nearby Charlize Theron smiled uncomfortably). "And people will go, 'Oh, that's a sellout!' You know what? Fuck you!"

At least Clooney is comfortable with his many career endeavors, unlike other actors who go abroad to shill products to an overseas audience.

Celebrities have traditionally flocked to Asian countries to shoot high paid (and often highly embarrassing) commercials. In an attempt to keep this part of their career a secret from American audiences, it is not uncommon for celebrities to enforce a "secrecy clause" which bars advertisers from disclosing sponsorship deals in the U.S. -- and they take it seriously. Actors including Leonardo DiCaprio and Meg Ryan have filed cease and desist orders against websites that post these ads to Americans.

Clooney's Nespresso ads aren't bad, and one of his spots even features John Malkovich.

Watch Clooney cuss out his critics below:

*Correction: Nespresso is a brand owned by a Swiss company, not a French company, as this story originally said. See comments below or further information.

CNN is reporting that Mick Jagger has blown off Davos:

It’s official - Davos does not have the moves to attract Jagger.

The Rolling Stone frontman was supposed to be one of the more unusual guests at this year’s World Economic Forum, attending a tea party thrown by British Prime Minister David Cameron. But...

In a statement released Monday, Jagger said he was pulling out of the event, over fears he will be used as a "political football." Sir Mick  – a knight of the realm - said he was worried about people making inaccurate judgements over his political allegiances and, as a result, was declining his invitation.

We have some bad news for Mr. Cameron.

Mick Jagger hasn't blown off Davos.

He has just blown off Mr. Cameron.

How do we know?

Well, because we were at a party in a Davos chalet last night, and Mr. Jagger walked in. He was accompanied by the Mayor of London, who unveiled an ice-sculpture here this morning.

We spent a couple of hours in the proximity of Mr. Jagger, who looked just like himself (good!) and seemed happy to be here.

Sorry, Mr. Cameron.
