Here’s Everything You Missed From This Weekend’s Wild Sundance Parties

Sundance

The Sundance Film Festival: two weeks of elite film screenings in a small, quiet, pristine mountain town usually reserved for fine Park City folk.

But when Robert Redford started the annual festival in 1978 that brings Hollywood to Utah, little did the Oscar-winning actor know the wild parties that would accompany each film premiere.

And the parties don’t just revolve around the films anymore, but major companies such as Bing and Grey Goose, not to mention New York and Los Angeles’ top night club entrepreneurs, have used the festival as a way to lure Hollywood's A-list (and hoards of wannabes) to their pop up night club spaces.

This weekend, we saw everyone from Wiz Khalifa, Lil Jon and Aziz Ansari to bikini-clad go-go dancers shake their groove thangs all over Park City, Utah.

Welcome to Park City, Utah. A beautiful, usually peaceful mountain town…

Until the Sundance Film Festival comes to town.

But for those who can’t get the coveted tickets to the films…

Guess Which A-Lister's Daughter Is Singing On 'American Idol'?

jane-carrey-horton-hears-a-who

Last night, if you stayed up past the nail-biting New York Giants' NFC championship win, you may have seen Jim Carrey's daughter, Jane Carrey, audition on last night's special broadcast of "American Idol."

The 24-year-old Los Angeles waitress sang about ten seconds of Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About" before the judges unanimously sent her on to the next round. She was one of seven contestants to get a pass through to Hollywood last night.

So, how was little Carrey? She wasn't William Hung awful, but she wasn't Kelly Clarkson awesome, either. The judges all seem to be rallying for herJ.Lo was gushing about seeing her in diapers. Hopefully, Jane won't overstay her welcome solely due to star power.

Her appearance easily became spectacle as the singing competition dedicated an entire slideshow of stills and video of the "Bruce Almighty" star with his daughter to the tune of John Mayer's "Daughters" playing in the background before she even took the stage.

So much for Jane trying to emerge from her father's shadow.

Of course, no audition would be complete without Jane calling up dad to deliver the good news. Carrey could be heard over speaker phone, "Oh my God, this is going to be an exciting year." ("American Idol" hopes so.)

If Jane sticks around for a while, maybe we'll get to do more than hear her dad's famous voice.

We're thinking Carrey's well-timed appearance may be another ratings ploy for "Idol's" idling numbersthe show is down 24 percent in ratings since last year. If so, there weren't many promos showing off Ace Ventura's daughter.

Maybe thatalong with an earlier broadcast on the East coastwould have given people "something to talk about."

Do you think Carrey's famous daughter deserves a spot in the next round?

Why Priceline May Be Committing Brand Suicide When It Kills Shatner Tonight (PCLN)

Priceline is taking a big risk by killing off William Shatner's "Negotiator" character, according to E-Poll Market Research, the company that tracks the popularity of celebrity pitchmen and brand icons. Shatner is as closely associated with the Priceline brand as the concept of "travel" is, its data says.

Priceline will get rid of Shatner -- by blowing him up in a bus that plunges off the side of a bridge -- on TV tonight, to draw people's attention to the site move from a bid-based travel booking site to a fixed price model.

E-Poll asked its survey participants, "What is the first thought that comes to mind when you see the name of this brand?"

The results -- which show that an almost equal number of people cite "Shatner" as they do "travel" -- speak for themselves:

priceline shatner

Chief Marketing Officer Brett Keller told Dow Jones:

"We felt it was necessary to go to extremes to grab the attention of every consumer in America and drive home the message that you don't have to negotiate to save money on a hotel at priceline.com ... We hope that everyone understands this was something that just had to be done."

Only Fluent English Speakers Are Allowed On 'Megan Fox Island'

Megan Fox is overexposed as an advertising device in the U.S. -- both figuratively and literally -- because she's usually asked to do nothing more than take her clothes off and pout.

That's what she did for Armani in 2010.

And that's what she did for Motorola's Super Bowl ad a few months earlier.

So it's refreshing to see her used in a self-deprecating way, as she is in this Brazilian ad for language school CCAA. Given that the audience for this ad speaks Portuguese, this script is cleverer than it looks.

Inside Bing's 3-Story Sundance Party With Microsoft's 'Mr. Fun'

Bing Bar

In the middle of bustling Main Street in Park City, Utah, sits the former Claim Jumper Hotel an historic property that Microsoft turns into a three-story party hub and event space called the "Bing Bar" throughout the two-week long Sundance Film Festival.

It's part of Microsoft's effort to turn Bing into the search engine of a younger, hipper demo.

Drake, Wiz Khalifa, Cobra Starship, Jason Mraz, Theophilus London and Fitz and the Tantrums are among the artists performing on one of the Bing Bar's two stages, while comedian Aziz Ansari and injured snowboarder Kevin Pearce, along with his neurosurgeon, are taking part in Bing's speaker series.

Each night, Bing hosts dinners for film casts that have included Neil Young, AnnaLynne McCord, Kristen Bell, Paul Simon, and William H. Macy not to mention hundreds of party-goers fighting to get their names on a list to make it inside for the house DJ and open bar, which unlike most places during Sundance, is not sponsored.

Between Bing Bar's performers, food catering and the constantly open bar, the Sundance endeavor is clearly an expensive one.

"We can’t give numbers but the really fortunate thing for us is that Microsoft has been committed to Sundance for a long time," Eric Hadley, General Manager of Marketing for Bing, told Business Insider when we sat down with him for a chat during Sundance's opening weekend.  "We only have one sponsor and it’s Intel, who just put on a Jason Mraz show."

Hadley, who is known as "Microsoft's Mr.Fun," hangs out with Jay-Z and has a reported $100 million marketing budget, adds that "One of the biggest things on the money side is that there are so many advertisers here now that we can come in and bring our whole ad sales team and they can bring customers in to see the music, to see the speaker series and have meetings here."

"I don’t know if it’s a money maker or money loser, but it’s just a really good way to showcase technology for Microsoft," explains Hadley.  "We can show off the technology we have like the XBox Kinect, the new Windows phones and a lot of people are going to be given phone while they’re here. Everyone was just at CES, this is the next big thing where more and more advertisers and brands are coming here."

And while Hadley says that Bing has recently grown 17 percent with their Generation Y target audience, much of the search engine's success is due to their partnerships that are visible during Sundance.

"We have a big deal with GroupMe, which is a Microsoft project as well so people who sign up for that can get notified that they’re on the guest list," explains Hadley. "It’s a way for people to get in and tons of people want to get in here so we can use our products as a way to get people engaged."

As for the A-list performers taking the stage throughout the Film Festival, Hadley says they are carefully chosen.

"It’s a combination of what we see in the search data, what we know about our target audience, what bands and stuff do they like, and the third thing we look at is how many followers do they have on Twitter and Facebook so we can really get them to push it out."says Hadley. "We’ve gotten really lucky with Drake twice, he played our music launch in Los Angeles right before he got big."

Apparently Drake is big enough now that even Bradley Cooper was willing to wait nearly three hours to see him perform at the Bing Bar Saturday night, after the rapper's plane was delayed due to snow.

But just because you weren't at Sundance doesn't mean you can't be a part of the fun.

Welcome to the Bing Bar! Home of the former Claim Jumper Hotel.

Meet Eric Hadley, General Manager of Marketing for Bing. He spends most of his days and nights working at the Bing Bar and was our trusty tour guide through the three-story space.

Kim Kardashian Explains Her Quickie Marriage: 'This Was A Bad Business Decision'

Kim-Kardashian-Movie-Premiere

It seems Kim Kardashian can't help but defend herself everywhere in public  and this morning, she took her serious thoughts on marriage to the light-hearted, "Live! with Kelly."

The "Kourtney and Kim Take New York" star explained her decision to divorce Kris Humphries after just 72 days while guest hosting on the morning talk show. She claims she married the basketball player out of "hopeless" romance and not for money as media and the public suggest. Her quick romance and wedding with Humphries was apparently inspired by her sister Khloe and mother Kris, who both married after less than six months and are currently still with their respective partners, NBA star Lamar Odom and lawyer Bruce Jenner.

Kardashian explained to Kelly Ripa that she didn't understand why people think her marriage was a sham, "If the wedding was fake and just for TV, I'm a smart business woman, I would have stayed married longer," she joked. "This was a bad business decision." Kardashian continued by saying, "I didn't think following my heart would create this much backlash."

As Kardashian described her pain after the divorce in which she moved in with her mother and spent half her time with sister Kourtney, Ripa was supportive and even thanked the reality star for being so open about her relationship on television. Check out the video from the "Live! with Kelly" opening chatter.

Ripa also asked why Kim didn't try to stick it out a little longer with Humphries, recalling her own first year of marriage as being "the worst" because she and husband Mark Consuelos "fought everyday." But the middle Kardashian sister rejected that idea by saying, "If I feel in my heart that this wasn't right, then why wait years to have the same result?"

Kardashian's show "Kourtney and Kim Take New York," has been chronicling the star's disintegrating marriage and will come to a head in the upcoming two-part season finale.

Ten Actors Who Hated Their Own Films

$

Alvin and the Chipmunks

When actors have a movie out, it’s customary that they publicize the film by saying nice things about it. David Cross recently took a different approach. When it came to describing his new film Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, the veteran comedian — better known for Mr. Show and Arrested Development — went on Conan and called the film a “big commercial for Carnival Cruise Lines” and told people not to go see it.

Here are 10 other actors who starred in films they weren’t crazy about.

1. Sylvester Stallone, Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. Sly doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to his film career. Despite co-starring with the delightful Estelle Getty as the titular violence-prone mother, Stallone knows just how bad the film was:

“I made some truly awful movies. Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot was the worst. If you ever want someone to confess to murder, just make him or her sit through that film. They will confess to anything after 15 minutes.”

2. Alec Guinness, Star WarsBy the time he played Obi-Wan Kenobi in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, Guinness had already appeared in cinematic classics like The Bridge on the River KwaiGreat Expectations and Lawrence of Arabia. During production, Guinness is reported to have said the following:

“Apart from the money, I regret having embarked on the film. I like them well enough, but it’s not an acting job, the dialogue – which is lamentable – keeps being changed and only slightly improved, and I find myself old and out of touch with the young.”

The insane amount of fame he won for the role as the wise old Jedi master took him somewhat by surprise and, ultimately, annoyed him. In his autobiography A Positively Final Appearance: A Journal, Guinness recalls a time he encountered an autograph-seeking fan who boasted to him about having watched Star Wars more than 100 times. In response, Guinness agreed to provide the boy an autograph under the condition that he promise never to watch the film again.

3. George Clooney, Batman & Robin. Sure, Batman & Robin made money. But by every other imaginable measure, the film was a complete failure, and a nightmare to the vast majority of the Caped Crusader’s most fervent fanatics. Star George Clooney recognized what a stinker he helped create and once plainly stated, “I think we might have killed the franchise.”

4. Bob Hoskins, Super Mario Brothers. He was in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. As far as I’m concerned, Bob Hoskins is forgiven for Super Mario Bros. Hoskins, though, doesn’t seem to be able to forgive himself. Last year the Guardian spoke with the veteran actor about his career and he summed up his feelings rather succinctly:

What is the worst job you’ve done?
Super Mario Brothers.

What has been your biggest disappointment?
Super Mario Brothers.

If you could edit your past, what would you change?
I wouldn’t do Super Mario Brothers.

5. Katherine Heigl, Knocked Up. Judd Apatow’s unplanned pregnancy comedy was a huge hit and helped cement her status as a bankable film actress. After the film’s release, however, Heigl didn’t have all good things to say. In fact, what she specifically said about it was that the film was:

“…A little sexist. It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys.”

Those comments are probably a big contributor to the fact that her name is absent from the film’s quasi sequel/spinoff slated for release later this year.

6. Bill Cosby, Leonard Part 6. You’d think a film that features Cosby riding away from a dangerous situation on the back of an ostrich would be great, right? Not exactly. Cosby himself disliked the film so much that he told people they’d be throwing their money away to go see it. That’s probably why the $24 million production made back just under $5 Million at the box office and won a Razzie for Worst Actor, Worst Screenplay and Worst Picture.

7. Charlize Theron, Reindeer Games. The 2000 action film Reindeer Games starred Ben Affleck, Gary Sinese and Charlize Theron and was directed by John Frankenheimer. But it all somehow failed to come together. In the end the film lost a lot of money and compiled a wealth of negative reviews – including one from its star actress who simply said, “Reindeer Games was not a good movie.”

8. Mark Wahlberg, The Happening. Mark Wahlberg doesn’t exactly seem like a guy who lives his life afraid of trees. But that is the odd position M. Night Shyamalan’s 2008 film The Happening put him in. Wahlberg, as it turns out, doesn’t look back too fondly on the film. He went on record during a press conference for The Fighter when he described a conversation with a fellow actor:

“We had actually had the luxury of having lunch before to talk about another movie and it was a bad movie that I did. She dodged the bullet. And then I was still able to … I don’t want to tell you what movie … alright “The Happening.” F*** it. It is what it is. F***ing trees, man. The plants. F*** it. You can’t blame me for not wanting to try to play a science teacher. At least I wasn’t playing a cop or a crook.”

9. John Cusack, Better Off Dead
John Cusack reportedly hated his cult 80s comedy so much that he walked out of the screening and later told the film’s director Steve Holland that Better Off Dead was “the worst thing I have ever seen” and he would “never trust you as a director again.”

10. Christopher Plummer, The Sound of MusicThe Sound of Music is considered a classic and has delighted many generations of fans. But, the film’s own lead actor, Christopher Plummer isn’t ready to sing its praises. Mr. Von Trapp himself declined to participate in a 2005 film reunion and, according to one acquaintance, has referred to the film as The Sound of Mucus.

This Is What Cynthia Nixon Looks Like With No Hair

Cynthia Nixon

Cynthia Nixon is known for her short, red locks as Sex & the City's Miranda Hobbes but on this morning's Live! with Kelly, Nixon debuted a much, much shorter 'do.

The actress, 45, shaved her head for her role of a cancer stricken poetry professor in the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Wit.

And the role has special meaning for Nixon who in 2006 discovered she had the early stages of breast cancer.

Now cancer free, Nixon told Kelly Ripa of her newly-bald head, "I thought it was kind of going to be no muss-no fuss, but I have to shave it every day!"

"I was always kind of curious to see what it would be like," added Nixon. "I like it, but I don't think I'm gonna keep it forever."

THE TRUTH ABOUT DAVOS: It's 'DaVOS,' Not 'DAvos' -- And The Police Don't Like You Taking Pictures

davos club hotel

When you think of the name of that little Alp ski town all those world leaders are gathering in this week, you probably think it's pronounced Davos, with the emphasis on the first syllable ("DA-vos").

That's because you're a clueless American.

It's actually pronounced "da-VOS," with the emphasis on the second syllable.

How did I learn that?

Because in Munich, I told a German I was heading to Davos ("DA-vos"), and he snickered and said it was "da-VOS."

Of course, being American, in addition to being clueless, you're probably also arrogant--arrogant enough to think that the name of the place you're going is pronounced the way YOU pronounce it, so as far as you're concerned, it's DAvos.

And as far as I'm concerned, it's DAvos.

So, suck it, Germans.

Anyway, I've arrived in DAvos. In a snowstorm. And I've discovered something. The DAvos police don't like having huge telephoto lenses shoved in their faces.

They have a job to do, these DAvos police--keeping out terrorists who want to blow up world leaders. So they don't take too kindly to having things pointed at them that might be guns.

We're starting in Munich, in a fabulous room at the Bayerischer Hof (courtesy of DLD, another conference, where I just moderated a panel). It just snowed.

The weather's still crappy as we scoot past a beer brewery, next to the tram tracks.

But we're riding in a brand-spanking new Audi A8. Audi sponsored DLD, so I've gotten quite used to riding around in brand new A8s. And we're being chauffered. And there's a world leader in the back. Okay, not EXACTLY a world leader, but a high-ranking executive of a massive multinational who has paid a BOATLOAD of money to go to Davos. The executive demands anonymity in exchange for sharing the truth about Davos. I grant it.

The Four Silliest Sentences From Today's New York Times Profile Of The Horse From 'War Horse'

the horse from war horse

The New York Times ran a hilarious feature on one of the horses from "War Horse" today.

The horse, Finders Key, was apparently a crappy race horse before transitioning to acting in 2003.

He played Joey (the horse) in the Oscar-nominated "War Horse," and even played Joey's mother à la Martin Lawrence in "Big Momma's House 2."

Here are four quotes from the NYT feature that (intentionally or not) slayed us:

1. "So there we were, trying to force Finders Key to race, when what he wanted to do was be in the movies." -- The horse's horse trainer.

2. "Ortiz did not single out Finders Key when Hendrickson stopped by his barn looking for Seabiscuit look-alikes. Moving down the shedrow, Hendrickson stopped in front of Finders Key’s stall and asked, 'Who’s this?'"

3. "And one of Finders Key’s friends on Facebook said: 'The scene where Joey loses his friend, the black horse, made me cry uncontrollably.'"

4. "Before it ends, he might be driven to Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, to have his hoof prints immortalized in cement. Right next to Trigger’s."

Albert Brooks Responds to Oscar Snub: 'I Was Robbed'

Despite his chilling performance in "Drive," Albert Brooks was snubbed by the Oscars on Tuesday morning.

But instead of sticking a cork back in the champagne bottle and weeping privately to himself, the comedian and Twitter maestro mined the omission for humor.

Also read: Oscar Nominees: The Complete List

While this year's crop of Academy Awards nominees hit the press circuit to find fresh ways to express their gratitude, Albert Brooks took to the social media site to respond hilariously to his Oscar snub.

"I got ROBBED. I don't mean the Oscars, I mean literally. My pants and shoes have been stolen," Brooks tweeted shortly after the nominations were announced.

Also read: Oscar Nominations: The Snubs (Slideshow)

Moments later he mimicked Sally Fields infamous Oscar acceptance speech.

"And to the Academy: "You don't like me. You really don't like me," Brooks added.

Even before the nominations were announced, Brooks (a previous nominee for 1987's "Broadcast News") was pessimistic about his chances of nabbing the golden guy. The comedian had accepted that it was Christopher Plummer's year for his portrayal of a gay man coming out of the closet late in life in "Beginners."

Also read: Oscar Nominations Analysis: Contradictory, and Good for 'The Artist'

"Tomorrow morning I find out if I have to go to any more events that Christopher Plummer wins," Brooks tweeted on Monday night.

And Brooks wasn't the only Oscar snub-ee to take to Twitter. "Young Adult's" Patton Oswald  tweeted invites to other pass-overs to get drunk.

The comedian (right) first invited Brooks to the Drawing Room, a bar on Hillhurst Avenue in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz neighborhood.

It's a dark, dive-y spot, so day drinking is encouraged.

As Oswald continued to press Brooks -- who took to Twitter as well -- Oswalt joked that Andy Serkis ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes") was controlling the jukebox and Michael Fassbender ("Shame") donned a pirate hat. Calm down ladies, George Clooney has dibs.

But what about the actresses who were passed over?

Charlize Theron and Tilda Swinton showed up in a stolen cop car, and then this:

@AlbertBrooks Dude, GET DOWN HERE. Gosling is doing keg stands and Olsen & Dunst LITERALLY just emerged from a shower of rose petals."

Doesn't Mena Suvari own the whole rose petals concept after "American Beauty"?

And what would Oscar talk be without a mention of Lars Van Trier? Lacking, but in this case we refer you to Oswalt's account.

Meet Kate Beckinsale, The Leather-Clad Vampire Who Rules The Movie Business

Selene-Underworld-Kate-Beckinsale

This weekend, with a $25 million box office take, Kate Beckinsale proved once again that she's one of the few female stars who can open a movie franchise. "Underworld Awakening" is the fourth movie in the saga of Beckinsale's leather-clad Selene character, which has grossed $337 million worldwide.

Until the first "Underworld" movie in 2003, however, Beckinsale's career was a modest one. You may have seen her with John Cusack in "Serendipity," but did you remember her in "Laurel Canyon," "The Golden Bowl," or the infamous straight-to-video fiasco "Tiptoes"?

There's more to the mother of 11-year-old Lily Mo and wife of director Len Wiseman than looking good while fighting werewolves.

Beckinsale studied at Oxford, hates exercise—despite her well-toned physique—and allegedly shuns cosmetic surgery.

Sure, she’s famous for “Pearl Harbor" and the “Underworld” series, but those blockbuster roles only came after her performances in smaller movies, such as the British multi-cast starrer “Much Ado About Nothing,” and the indie films "The Last Days of Disco" and “Snow Angels.”

With "Underworld: Awakening" and "Contraband" out this weekend, both of which are already making waves at the box office, here's why Beckinsale can’t be stopped.

1973: Kate comes from acting royalty

Kate Beckinsale was born in London to respected actors Richard Beckinsale (seen here at far right) and Judy Loe. Richard is most notable for his hilarious role on the British sitcom "Porridge" alongside funnyman Ronnie Barker. Richard was also set to star in the late '70s BBC2 show, "Bloomers," but he passed away before filming ended.

1979: Her father died young

At the age of five, Beckinsale's father passed away due to a sudden heart attack. Beckinsale stated in an interview that though she was young, she hasn’t forgotten her father. “There are certainly enough memories for me not to feel that it's somebody I didn't know.”

A few years later, her mother married director Roy Chattersby. Beckinsale touted him as a wonderful, kind and patient stepfather. “He's been so brilliant. He wasn't pushy, he let me come to him,” she explained.

1988: She battled an eating disorder

Beckinsale has been open about her personal life, but that openness went a new level when she revealed that at age 15, she struggled with anorexia.

She attributed her disorder to her father’s death, and rather than keep it hidden, Beckinsale went to her mother and requested Freudian analysis to get help.

The Sun Mick Jagger Davos

Sir Mick Jagger has dropped out of a David Cameron-organized event at Davos, apparently over fears that he was being used as a "political football", the UKPA reports.

It appears that the Rolling Stone frontman may have had some reservations about the way that the British press were covering the event — take a look at the Sun's headline here, for example.

Jagger wasn't too keen about being linked with the right-wing Tories, it seems.

Here's the statement from Jagger, via the UKPA:

"During my career I have always eschewed party politics and came to Davos as a guest, as I thought it would be stimulating.

"I have always been interested in economics and world events.

"I now find myself being used as a political football and there has been a lot of comment about my political allegiances which are inaccurate. I think it's best I decline the invitation to the key event and curtail my visit."
