Oprah Now Has Her Own Channel On The Huffington Post

oprah winfrey

On Thursday, Arianna Huffington announced the launch of the OWN  channel on her site.

Huffington says, "Oprah was, in fact, made for the Internet."

Huffington and Oprah decided to team up last May to create the platform on The Huffington Post. This came after OWN slipped in ratings almost immediately after launching and then in May announced a 20 percent staff layoff.

Maybe a channel on The Huffington Post will be an effective platform for Oprah to reach her fans again.

Huffington is confident it is. She writes in her post that the partnership with OWN makes clear sense because Oprah always integrated her audience effortlessly when she was on television. By teaming with The Huffington Post, the network has opportunities for her fans to go online and use social media to connect.

One of Oprah's most anticipated shows, "Favorite Things" in which she selected her top gift selections for the holiday season, will live on through her new channel. It was the top story when the page launched yesterday.

Here is part of Arianna Huffington's statement on the partnership:

"And since engagement is deeply embedded in the DNA of HuffPost as well, I'm delighted that, starting today, we're partnering with the Oprah Winfrey Network to bring some of Oprah's best content to the HuffPost platform -- a platform that just received its 200,000,000th comment. On the new HuffPost OWN section, we'll be working to enlarge and deepen the conversation on, as Oprah puts it, living our best lives."

Microsoft's Surface Tablet Just Got A Big Endorsement From Oprah (MSFT)

Oprah

This should help Microsoft's attempt to dethrone the iPad.

Oprah is calling the Surface one of her "Favorite things" for 2012.

Here's what she says:

"The Surface, Microsoft's first tablet, feels like a Mercedes-Benz to me, people! The full-size keyboard built right into the cover makes work easy, the very smart kickstand makes watching a movie or Skyping a friend a delight, the less than a pound-and-a-half weight makes a great alternative to a laptop, and the many other features make it fun for work and play. Now, that's a wowser!"

Since Oprah moved to cable, her influence has waned, but this is still a big endorsement for Microsoft. It should help Microsoft win over a few consumers.

Read The Witty Rejection Letter David Letterman Sent Jimmy Kimmel In 2002

Jimmy Kimmel David Letterman

Jimmy Kimmel, 44, has idolized David Letterman, 65, since the younger late-night show host was a quirky 11-year-old growing up in Las Vegas.

Kimmel has oft joked the only reason he went into show business was to be friends with Letterman and wondered why anyone would watch his show instead of Letterman’s.

So, when Kimmel was coming off four years as co-host of Comedy Central’s “The Man Show” and about to debut “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC in 2002, naturally he reached out to Letterman to appear on the show’s premiere episode.

Letterman’s typed response (on personal stationary, nonetheless) is now framed on Kimmel’s desk in his studio office, alongside a photo of his late grandparents and a picture of himself covered in whip cream after popping a fictional zit on Jon Stewart’s forehead.

Read the letter, uncovered by New York Magazine during a recent interview with Kimmel, below:

September 23, 2002

Dear Jimmy,

Thanks for asking me to appear on your premiere. Unfortunately, I will be out of the country on business. I’m sure the program will be a success regardless.

Sincerely,

Dave.

“His response is hilarious,” exclaimed Kimmel to New York Magazine. “He’s not out of the country on business. He knows you know he’s not out of the country on business and just the words ‘on business’—it really makes it a perfect letter for me.”

Ten years later, the two aren’t exactly best buddies but Letterman did appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for the first time Wednesday as the LA-based show broadcast out of Brooklyn in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Letterman's appearance gave Kimmel his biggest Wednesday audience in the show's 10 year history—about 2.4 million viewers.

Leading up to the visit, Kimmel said he was “terrified” to interview Letterman and tried to justify it by saying, “I’m sure for him it’s nothing more than a nuisance, that he’s just doing it to be nice.”

But Letterman was a gracious guest Wednesday as Kimmel showed him photos of his "Late Night"-themed 18th birthday cake and "L8 Nite" license plate on his first car.

Letterman responded by telling his number one fan, "I’ll be honest with you, it was troubling. I kept saying to people, ‘Why is he sucking up to me?’... When I was persuaded that there was some measure of stability here, then I really realized that it was genuine and I couldn’t appreciate it more."

Letterman added, "In show business, one of the precepts is you're not really supposed to be nice to people, especially if you have the same occupation as another person. Jimmy has broken that precept and has been nothing but generous and courteous and kind to me."

But perhaps the elder late-night host is just trying to keep his friends close and his enemies closer.

Starting January 8, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will be moved from midnight to the 11:35pm time slot—putting him in direct competition with CBS’ “Late Show” with David Letterman and NBC’s “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno.

"I want to wish you the best of luck when you move the show," Letterman told Kimmel during their interview. "I think it'll be exciting. I think you're going to be perfect at 11:30 ... I couldn't be happier than to have you in the running."

As for what Kimmel thinks of his other competition, Leno, he bluntly states, “Everyone is better than Leno.”

Now watch Letterman's ratings-raising appearance Wednesday on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

'Storage Wars' Star Files Lawsuit Over Fake Porn Video

Brandi PassanteBrandi Passante wants the world to know that she won't get naked and give anybody a computer virus. And she's willing to go to court to prove it.

Passante, a buyer on the A&E reality show "Storage Wars," filed suit in U.S. District Court in Central California last week against Hunter Moore, former operator of the website Is Anyone Up, claiming that he published fake photos and video purporting to depict Passante in pornographic situations.

And, perhaps worse, the suit alleges, the video placed a virus on viewers' computers.

Also read: Erin Andrews' Peephole Perp Gets 30 Months

According to the suit, Passante first became aware that there were fake porn images of her floating around on the web earlier this month, when she received a tweet reading, "Love the pics" from Is Anyone Up's Twitter account.

"Passante looked at the referenced website and was horrified, hurt, and ashamed to see images of someone portraying her in pornographic video and associated images," the suit reads. "Passante never made any such video, has never had any contact with Mr. Moore, and did not send him sexual images. Moore fabricated the video for the purpose of trading on Passante's fame and celebrity to draw traffic to his site."

Moore later posted the video to porn-friendly website Fleshbot.com, the suit claims, adding that when users clicked on the video, a virus immediately began to download onto their computers.

Also read: Kanye West Spouts Off on Kim Kardashian's Sex Tape (Audio)

The suit goes on to claim that Moore is capitalizing on Passante's name and likeness by selling merchandise.

Passante has "experienced anxiety, loss of sleep and physical illness" due to the experience, the suit says, adding that her professional reputation has been damaged by the fake video.

Alleging false designation of origin, dilution by tarnishment, defamation, commercial disparagement, commercial fraud, and other offenses, Passante is seeking all available damages, plus attorney's fees, and a judgment to impound and destroy and computers, servers, or other equipment owned by Moore that contains the pictures and videos.

On Friday, a U.S. District Judge issued a temporary restraining order demanding that the video and pictures be removed from any of Moore's sites, and barring Moore or anyone associated with him from publishing them.

Pamela Chelin contributed to this report.

Martha Stewart's Empire Is Collapsing Yet She Still Gets Paid Like A Sultan (MSO)

$

Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia laid off about 10 percent of its 600-person workforce this week, according to Ad Age, but that is the least of the company's problems.

Martha Stewart the company is in full-scale collapse, according to its own disclosures to the SEC, and yet Martha Stewart the person is still compensated like a sultan, and that includes salaries and stipends for friends and family of the company's management.

In Q3 2012, revenues at MSO -- mostly from advertising or other marketing partnerships -- declined 17 percent to $43.5 million, the company reported today.

It's part of a yearslong downward spiral for the diva of home style. Here's a chart of MSO's annual revenues:

martha stewart

Magazine revenue and merchandising revenue are well on their way to being half what they were five years ago. That's partly because MSO screwed up two deals it had with Macy's and JC Penney, leading to injunctions that now prevent Stewart from selling in Penney. And sales within both chains were in decline even before the injunction took effect.

With a performance this lousy, you'd expect to see Stewart's compensation take a hit. In fact it has. In 2009, she earned $9.8 million in total compensation; in 2011 she got just $5.5 million.

But it's never that simple with CEO compensation. She did lose her bonus payments, but during the same period her base salary rose from $1.7 million to $2 million and her perks stayed flat at $3.3 million.

Perks, it turns out, are a huge part of Martha Stewart's life. Here's a breakdown:

  • $289,653 in TV union talent fees.
  • $612,249 for "security services."
  • $83,327 for what appears to be Stewart's personal assistant, but the the company uses a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo to obscure what the payment is specifically for.
  • $73,230 for a "weekend driver."
  • A personal trainer
  • Her charitable contributions
  • And free swag in the form of "vendor/advertiser supplied samples/products, and utilities and telecommunication services with no incremental cost to the Company."

If you read that last item closely you'll notice that Stewart doesn't even pay her own cellphone bill.

It doesn't stop there.

Friends and family at the Stewart empire get sweet deals too:

  • Margaret Christiansen, Stewart’s sister-in-law, is a Senior Vice President of the Company and received approximately $179,317 in compensation in 2011, inclusive of equity-based compensation.
  • Alexis Stewart, Ms. Stewart’s daughter, served as a co-host of a company television show and a company radio show. She received approximately $230,769 in 2011.
  • Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, the daughter of former executive chairman Charles Koppelman, received approximately $300,500 in 2011, for co-hosting with Alexis. (Hutt’s employment with MSO ended in December 2011.)

It has been this way for years. In 2010, Martha's personal trainer cost shareholders $30,000.

As a result of a 2009 contract, Stewart received a $3 million retention fee simply for agreeing to remain the boss of her own company, which she founded, and which is named after her, according to MSO's SEC filings (see page 41).

And that's a separate fee from the $2 million annual licensing fee her company gives her for permission to use her name.

Add it all up and Martha has received something like $30 million in compensation and fees since 2009, even though her company hasn't made a profit since 2007 and is hemorrhaging red ink, and only remained cashflow positive in 2011 because it sold stock and investments, according to its annual report.

Rupert Murdoch

Bob Iger, Jeff Bewkes, Rupert Murdoch and Philippe Dauman each helm huge media conglomerates—and this week they're using their power for good.

Why give so much? Time Warner CEO, Jeff Bewkes, says “New York City is our corporate home," while Newscorp. chairman Rupert Murdoch said "Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones."

Read the CEOs' statements below, and see how much each conglomerate pledged to help victims of the hurricane:

Robert (Bob) Iger, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Co.:

Donated: $2 million to Sandy relief efforts. The company split the donation into two parts—$1 million for immediate relief efforts will go to the American Red Cross and $1 million will be for organizations focused on rebuilding efforts.

Statement: “It’s hard to fathom the devastation from this storm. Thousands of people in the hurricane’s path lost everything and face the daunting challenge of putting their lives and communities back together. We hope this helps provide immediate aid needed to get through this disaster and begin the road to recovery."

Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner chairman and CEO:

Statement: “New York City is our corporate home, the home to thousands of our employees, and the location for so many of our film and television productions. We feel a special kinship with all those who have been affected by this devastating storm. Time Warner and its employees have always responded in selfless and generous ways to help those in need, and we hope that our contributions will help people to rebuild and recover."

Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. Chairman and CEO:

Donated: $1 million to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. The donation will be divided into $500,000 for the Mayor's Fund for NYC, and another $500,000 for relief in New Jersey.

Statement: "Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones and those families coping with this tremendous natural disaster. But we are also heartened by the stories of communities pulling together, with neighbors helping neighbors through this difficult time. I sincerely hope many other companies will also be able to provide assistance to families and communities in need of help."

Philippe Dauman, Viacom President and Chief Executive Officer:

Donated: $1 million to the cause—splitting the million between the Mayor's Fund for NYC and local relief groups in Connecticut, Long Island , New Jersey and Westchester County.

Statement: "The devastation from Hurricane Sandy is unprecedented and has left so many struggling to rebuild their lives. Viacom has always had a strong relationship with the communities it serves and we are proud to step forward once again to help those in need.  In addition to these efforts, Viacom's media brands are mobilizing behind Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in ways that are most impactful and meaningful for their audiences."

DreamWorks Plans To Use Classic Media As A Fourth Quarter Bump

$

rocky and bullwinkle

When DreamWorks acquired Classic Media at the end of July gaining access to classic characters Rocky & Bullwinkle, Casper, Lassie, and more, we figured we'd see the eventual recreation of the beloved characters.

However, that doesn't seem to be the case yet.

A closer look through DreamWorks' third quarter SEC filings shows the company's plans for its $157.6 million acquisition of the animation property.

Classic Media from here on out will be known as "DreamWorks Classics," and will focus heavily on fourth quarter holiday television specials.

"We expect that revenues generated by our newly acquired subsidiary, Classic Media, will tend to be higher during the fourth quarter of each calendar year due to the holiday-themed content offered through television distribution rights as well as home entertainment products geared towards the holiday season."

Through the deal, DreamWorks Animation has rights to more than 6,100 of Classic Media's animated and live-action TV shows including CasperFrosty and Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

However, DreamWorks will also have access to lucrative franchises Lassie, VeggieTales, VeggieTales, George of the Jungle, The Lone Ranger, among others.

Most curious was no mention of one of Classic Media's most popular franchises, "Rocky & Bullwinkle," in its third quarter report which makes us wonder if DreamWorks has something bigger in store for the duo.

A film based on two of Classic Media's characters "Mr Peabody & Sherman," following the adventure of a boy, his genius dog, and their stolen time machine, is already in the works for November 2013.

The animated picture will feature the voice talents of television stars Ty Burrell and Ariel Winter ("Modern Family"), Ellie Kemper ("The Office"), and Stephen Colbert.

Seeking: The Most Promising Assistants In Hollywood

Devil Wears Prada Assistant

In 2006's "Devil Wears Prada," Anne Hathaway's character "Andy" expertly plays the doting assistant to her maniacal, high maintenance boss, played by Meryl Streep.

It went on to garner two Oscar nominations and rake in nearly $327 million at the box office. Needless to say, the tale of the abused assistant struck a chord with audiences.

Last month, we gave you our list of "The 20 Most Powerful Publicists In Hollywood," and this month, we want to know who are the most promising assistants in Hollywood.

We want to find the people who, like Hathaway's "Devil" character, are really running the show behind-the-scenes. People who not only make coffee runs, manage calendars and roll calls, but those who really give creative input to their powerful bosses, are key gatekeepers to the business's top players, are assigned special side projects, are talking to big wigs on a daily basis and who can be found wheeling and dealing even after office hours have ended.

And we're looking all over the entertainment industry — from talent agencies to TV networks, film studios, PR firms and even personal celebrity assistants.

To help Business Insider's entertainment channel, The Wire, put together a ranking of the most promising assistants, we need your help.

Nominate yourself, your co-workers, rising stars, frenemies. And bosses, tell us why your assistant is the best in the 'biz.

In order to nominate someone, or yourself (all confidentially, of course), email Aweisman@businessinsider.com with the following info by Wednesday, November 7:

  • Name, title, company, name of boss, boss' title.
  • Why this person is so influential behind-the-scenes.
  • If you have one, a photo.
  • For those who are nominating someone at their own company, we're asking you to tell us (off the record) who you would also nominate from rival companies or other areas of the industry. That way we can make the most comprehensive list possible, and it cancels out self-serving nominations.

We look forward to your nominations!

Finally, Someone Has Undertaken An Investigation Of Superhero Personal Finances

$
0
0

Law of Superheroes book cover

James Daily and his friend Ryan Davidson are lawyers who run the blog LawAndTheMultiverse.com. Their new book, The Law of Superheroes, examines legal issues that would arise in a world with superheroes.

We asked them to explain a few superhero personal finance issues. Read on for their responses.

Clark Kent recently quit his job at the Daily Planet to pursue blogging full-time. How will this affect his 2012 taxes and what should he consider writing off?

Moving from being employed to being self-employed has a lot of tax consequences. Probably the two largest changes are having to pay self-employment tax (i.e. the share of Social Security and Medicare that were previously paid for by the employer) and having to make quarterly estimated tax payments.

As a blogger, Kent likely won't have a lot of business expenses to deduct. Since he will presumably work from home he may be eligible for the home office deduction, but it's a tricky deduction to get right and many accountants advise against it.

Which superhero should really spring for home insurance and why?

Presumably most home-owning superheroes have homeowner's insurance, but renter's insurance would be a good idea for those who don't own a home. Homeowner's and renter's insurance often include off-premises liability coverage that covers negligent acts away from home. That could come in handy if, for example, a superhero accidentally damages a bystander's property during a fight with a supervillain. The trick is that a superhero with a secret identity couldn't make a claim on their homeowner's or renter's policy without revealing his or her secret identity.

What other assets should certain superheroes consider insuring?

Gadget-based superheroes (e.g. Batman, Spider-Man with his web shooters) should certainly consider insuring their gadgets. It's not a normal insurance policy, but some superheroes might consider insuring against the damage caused if their secret identity were to be revealed. Ordinary identity theft insurance probably wouldn't cover it.

Which superhero probably has debts keeping him up at night? And what can he/she do about it?

Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) has gone bankrupt a few times, or at least his companies have. My advice would be to take fewer risks, but I doubt he'd take my advice. Famously, Bruce Wayne is bankrupted in "The Dark Knight Rises," and my advice to him would be to hire a good lawyer, since he should have been able to avoid losing any money on such obviously faked stock market trades.

Which superhero is likely dealing with student loan debt and what would be the most efficient (yet highly illegal) way to pay them off?

Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) is a good candidate, depending on how good his scholarship to Empire State University was. He could probably use his abilities to cheat at certain casino games (craps, maybe, by throwing the dice just so), or he could try his hand at mixed martial arts, which is illegal in New York, where Parker lives.

Which superheroes are shelling out for gift taxes?

Probably none of them. For example, Superman probably hasn't given away enough diamonds to reach the lifetime limit. Others, like Tony Stark, have given away a lot of money but gave it to non-profits (e.g. the Maria Stark Foundation). Estate tax is another matter. It's probably a good thing Superman's valuable assets are in Antarctica!

Could you point out some bad spending habits you've noticed among certain superheroes?

Not so much bad spending habits as a failure to capitalize on their powers financially. For example, Peter Parker could be an amazing professional basketball player.

In previous interviews, you've mentioned that a lot of superheroes are "judgment proof," meaning they don't have that much in assets. How would you recommend they use their powers to start investing?

It depends on the superhero and their power, but the first thing I would recommend is selling media rights and making endorsement deals. And any superhero who can see into the future could make a killing in the stock market, possibly even legally.

Now check out how to turn your family into an old money dynasty >

During a probation progress hearing in Los Angeles Thursday stemming from the Rihanna case, Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, shushed the 23-year-old after he tried to speak in court.

Geragos was simply trying to ask the judge's permission for the musician to go on a world concert tour when Brown tried to open his mouth to answer a question from the judge regarding his schedule.

Geragos, who has also represented Michael Jackson and Winona Ryder, quickly quipped "I don't dance, you don't talk."

But the judge simply found it amusing, saying, "We would like to see you dance, Mr. Geragos."

NYC Indie Film Companies Hit Hard By The Hurricane

Sandy flooding

The independent film world has been hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. With the lower half of Manhattan plunged into darkness and damp, indie executives headquartered downtown are digging out from flooding and power outages at a time when they are usually planning premieres and pre-Oscar events.

The Weinstein Company, with its offices in the heart of Tribeca, found itself coping with flooded basements and no power. "Our I.T. guys always planned on a backup in the case of a natural disaster, they just never planned for 20 feet of seawater," David Glasser, chief operating officer of The Weinstein Company, told TheWrap.

Other indie companies like Oscilloscope Laboratories and Cinetic Media have been forced to close their offices while they, like many New York businesses, wait for electricity to return.

Also read: Hurricane Sandy Slams Entertainment Industry With Production Delays, Lost Ticket Sales

Even Sony Pictures Classics, housed in midtown, closed its offices for part of the week. Co-chairman Tom Bernard said that their building has power now, but Sony Pictures Classics has been running a "skeleton crew" out of New Jersey because so many people live in the outer boroughs.

"No trains, no buses, roads have no stoplights ...hopefully things will get better for all next week," he wrote in an email.

Bernard, who lives in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey was one of many executives who had to deal with hurricane damage and flooding at home, as well as the challenge of getting into the city.

"Most of us live in Brooklyn or Queens or Long Island,"  said Matt Cowal, senior vice president of marketing and publicity at Magnolia. "Most of us are just working from home. We're all waiting to see what happens and to play it by ear. We can do our jobs effectively remotely."

Cowal predicts most people will return to the office by Monday.

Also read: Hurricane Sandy: Most New York Studios Unscathed, But Chelsea Piers Not So Lucky

In the heart of the arthouse movie season, The Weinstein Company has been without email for three days this week. After its servers went out in the storm, its backup servers in New Jersey were taken down in the next wave of violent winds and surging waters.

"The city of New York is our hub," Glasser said. "We have offices in London and L.A., but when that goes down, it impacts us across the board."

He said employees quickly moved to Gmail and other services, stressing that the company has managed to keep on target with several films, such as "This Must Be the Place" and "Silver Linings Playbook," that are due out in the coming weeks.

When it comes to New York's electricity shortage, the independent film scene is being burned by its location. Oscilloscope, ATO Pictures, and Cinetic are also located in the lower half of Manhattan, where Consolidated Edison Inc. opted to shut off power on Monday, leaving an estimated 228,000 people without electricity. Were they located a few blocks north, their situation might be entirely different.

Like those other indie labels, Focus Features is located in downtown Manhattan, leaving its offices without power. However, instead of requiring people to work from home, the company's corporate parent NBC-Universal has offered staffers workspace in its midtown offices.

For the most part, the hurricane has led to logistical nightmares but not massive property damage or insurmountable disruptions in the flow of work. Films will still go forward with their scheduled releases, thanks to improvisation in the face of transit woes and other nightmares.

"Our main concern is that all of our employees are safe and hopefully Monday will be business as usual," Laura Sok, a spokeswoman for Oscilloscope, wrote in an email to TheWrap.

Also impacted are the New York branches of talent agencies. While agencies like William Morris Endeavor were safely nestled away from the blackouts in Midtown, others like Paradigm were not spared from the electrical failures.

Its office on Park Avenue South has been closed since Monday and may not reopen until next Tuesday. With the company's email servers affected, New York-based Paradigm agents have been unable to access their business correspondence remotely.

But other companies are trying to stay up and running by asking their employees to pitch in from home. Even some entertainment companies that have power, such as Magnolia, are not expecting workers to come into the office while the city's subways are largely shut down.

Despite the canceled flights that have bedeviled the East Coast, some executives have managed to make it to Los Angeles in time for this week's American Film Market. Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles caught a flight, even though his house in Long Island is without power, and Oscilloscope executive David Laub also was able to make the trip.

The week has been stressful, but it has also inspired a sense of civic pride among the band of indie studios.

"There's been chaos and a little extra stress," Glasser said. "It's a crazy time for us, but we feel very fortunate. There are people without homes and there are lost lives, and our hearts and prayers go out to them. But New Yorkers are amazing and we are die-hard New Yorkers."

These Has-Been Celebrities Still Charge Staggering Fees Per Appearance

$

Even celebrities who are past their prime make a ton of money.

Speaking engagements, private performances or simple appearances can bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Celebrity Talent International is an agency that represents huge stars like Adele, Elton John and Angelina Jolie, booking appearances for these stars and hundreds more.

Many of the appearance fees are listed on CTI's website and are shockingly high.

Decades after 90210 made her famous, Shannen Dougherty is still making a ton of money. Same for former musician/reality stars like Clay Aiken and Bret Michaels.

And you won't believe what the former Mr. Britney Spears makes.

Shannen Doherty makes more than $100,000 per appearance.

Dougherty's peak was about 20 years ago when she starred as mean girl Brenda on "Beverly Hills 90210." She's had a few gigs since, but nothing notable in the past couple years.

Roseanne Barr still rakes in $100,000 per appearance.

Roseanne is famous for her sitcom that ran from 1988 through 1997. Since then, her career has dried up. Her Lifetime reality show "Roseanne's Nuts" was cancelled after one season.

Clay Aiken charges between $100,000 and $150,000 per speaking gig.

Aiken was the runner-up on "American Idol" in 2003. Since then, he's had a few songs on the radio. But he still has a lucrative speaking career.

The Successful Posthumous Career of Kurt Vonnegut

$

Kurt VonnegutKurt Vonnegut was one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century. All signs point to the author holding the same place in the 21st century, despite the fact that he died April 11, 2007. The late Vonnegut has accomplished more dead than most of us will alive, from social media celebrity to indie film success. We’d expect nothing less from the ironic author who wrote in "Slaughterhouse Five," “How nice—to feel nothing, and still get full credit for being alive.”

1. RT @Kurt_Vonnegut

Vonnegut’s a Twitter star. The @Kurt_Vonnegut Twitter account (not verified, natch) tweets the late writer’s quotes and has 169,666 followers and counting. Meanwhile, he only follows @TheMarkTwain. (The two writers probably would’ve followed each other in real life, if they’d had the chance. Their work is frequently compared. Vonnegut called Twain an “American saint” and even named his first son after him.) Like any major celebrity, Vonnegut also has a few other Twitter accounts dedicated to him, including @Zombie_Vonnegut. If you think Vonnegut’s funny in 140 characters, you should read one of his books.

kurt vonnegut tweet

 2. Check Out the Vonnegut Library

Vonnegut said, “The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries.” In fall 2010, his hometown of Indianapolis opened the Vonnegut Memorial Library in his honor. The building is part library/ part museum and showcases a replica of Vonnegut’s writing studio and some of those famous rejection letters he talked about. Writer Corey Michael Dalton recently lived, worked, and slept in the front window for “Locked Up with Vonnegut,” part of Banned Books Week. Guests can type messages on the late writer’s typewriter, which are then tweeted from the Twitter account @kurtstypewriter.

3. All Eyez on Kurt Vonnegut

Vonnegut’s the Tupac of America literature—the posthumous hits just keep coming. His latest book, "We Are What We Pretend To Be: The First and Last Works," contains one of Vonnegut’s first novellas and the establishing chapters of his last novel. Three other collections have been published since his death: a collection of short stories, drawings, and essays called "Armageddon in Retrospect" in 2008; the unpublished short story collections "Look at the Birdie" in 2009; and "While Mortals Sleep" in 2011. Back in April, Vonnegut’s writings from his college newspaper days were published in the Amazon e-book, "Kurt Vonnegut: The Cornell Sun Years 1941–1943." What’s next? "50 Shades of Kilgore Trout"?

4. Digital Luddite

Before the release of "Look at the Birdie," some of Vonnegut’s unpublished short stories were made available as e-books. Now you can access all of his work via e-reader. Vonnegut was a proud Luddite who wrote in longhand and used a typewriter long after most writers switched over to a computer. We wonder if the book-loving technology critic would have found the digitalization of his work—and books, in general—ominous, or a good use of “damn fool computers.”

5. The Third Adaptation’s a Charm

Vonnegut’s 1961 short story “Harrison Bergeron” is set in 2081 when all Americans are forced to be equal in not only rights, but also abilities. No one’s smarter, richer, or ahem, more prolific than anyone else. The dystopic work has been adapted for the screen three times. Vonnegut praised the short film version "Harrison Bergeron" released a year before his death. He might’ve liked the latest reworking even better: the 2009 short film "2081" is the closest adaptation of “Harrison Bergeron” yet. The sci-fi film runs 25 minutes and cost only $100,000 to produce, yet it’s one of IMDB’s most popular short films.

Jimmy Kimmel

Forget uptowners with power vs. downtowners living in a blackout, Manhattan is currently divided in two over the topic of the New York City Marathon.

For the first time in its history, Mayor Bloombergcanceled the race after controversy over resources being used to aid runners instead of victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Celebrities weighed in on the issue, tweeting whether they were for or against the historical decision. And an overwhelming amount agreed.

While some took the matter very seriously, others took the opportunity to make a joke. See where celebrities stand on the issue:

Pro-canceling the marathon:

Cop on Staten Island tells me "it's chaos here. It's bad. Police cars are running out of gas." And they were going to have a marathon here?!"

Andy Cohen: "Mayor Bloomberg gets it right canceling the marathon."

Snooki: "Go team! Help the people!!'@snooki they cancelled the NYC Marathon due to a public uproar. Yay! Feel accomplished? I do."

"Thank God the marathon has been canceled. That was awkward."

: "4 a second I thought it was a gr8 idea 4 the NYC marathon not to b canceled. I CHANGE MY MIND. My heart goes out to all the victims. ."

Glad to hear NYC marathon was canceled. I ran it last year, great event.. But all resources should go to people in need in that region now."

: "Great idea! RT : help turn the cancelled marathon into a massive community service effort?

Thank god they cancelled the nyc marathon. This city needs all the focus to be on relief!"

: "Thrilled they canceled NYC Marathon. No one has gas, food&homes"

Lo Bosworth: "update -marathon is off, so if u r a runner, even better reason to donate your room to #sandy survivors in need http://race2recovernyc.com/  RT."

chrissy TeigenThe only celeb who tried to see things from the other point of view was Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and soon-to-be Mrs. John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, who wrote:

Not gonna cheer at the fact the marathon has been cancelled, as I personally know people who sacrificed a lot, a lot to run it for charity."

Funny reactions:

Jimmy Kimmel: "I'm running the NYC Marathon anyway and I'm going to WIN!"

Joy Behar: "What do you mean they cancelled Sunday's #NYCMarathon? That can't be true. Paul Ryan already announced that he won it."

Rainn Wilson: "ATTN: NYC Marathoners. Hosting my own private marathon on Sunday. Meet me at Hunts Point, Bronx at 5 am. Bring cash."

: "Here's an idea: Gas Truck Marathon. Start in Staten Island, finish in New Jersey."

I’m glad they canceled the New York City Marathon. Now let’s get to work on ending all physical activity."

: "This sucks because I'm pretty sure I was going to win the marathon this year."

17 Things You Don't Know About Horror Film 'Halloween'

Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Myers, and a jack-o-lantern all come to mind when thinking of the "Halloween" franchise.

However, you probably rarely consider the man who came up with the idea for the horror classic.

We read autobiography The Man Who Created Halloween, and learned Irwin Yablans may have never went into film production if it weren't for the interference of his younger brother, Frank.

See what you may not know about the horror movie >

Before creating "Halloween," Yablans worked primarily as a salesman and distributor at major motion picture studios Paramount and Warner Bros.

While at Paramount, he turned down a huge opportunity to oust and take over his boss' position as vp manager of sales in L.A. The man who eventually took over was his younger brother Frank, a longtime Disney employee.

With his brother soon in control of Paramount, Irwin became known simply as the "president's brother."

Frank soon forced his brother from his sales position, asking him to work instead as a production assistant. The adjustment, though difficult at first, was probably the best thing that ever happened to him.

"This invitation was probably encouraged by my brother, for it would conveniently resolve the issue of how to get me out of Paramount as a sales executive," said Yablans. "I would like to believe that Frank really thought that I would be happier making movies than selling them, and truth be told, it's what I really wanted to do. The reality is that it was a combination of the two that Frank cleverly used to rationalize moving me out of distribution."

After ending his contract at Paramount, Yablan left the major studios to run independent studio Compass International Pictures (originally Turtle Releasing Company), which led to his eventual meeting with the real-life Michael Myers and the creation of international success, "Halloween."

Yablans came up with the idea for the film on a first-class flight back to Los Angeles.

Before "Halloween," Yablan's Indie film company Compass put out failed film, "High Velocity" before turning to new director John Carpenter with "Assault on Precinct 13."

After the success of Carpenter's first film, Yablans knew he wanted him on board to work on a follow-up film.

"The idea came to me that a movie about babysitters in jeopardy could be interesting," said Yablans. "I reasoned that everyone had either been a babysitter, hired one, or at the very least, been a baby."

(The Man Who Created Halloween)

The character, Michael Myers, is a real person.

At the time, he was the owner of a small independent film distributing company in London, Miracle Pictures.

Yablans met with Myers to discuss the entry of Carpenter's "The Assault on Precinct 13" in the London Film Festival.

(The Man Who Created Halloween)

Director John Carpenter had two requests for the film.

1. The credits above the film read "John Carpenter's Halloween."

2. Carpenter's girlfriend, Debra Hill, would be named producer, and allowed to co-write the script.

Lindsay Lohan Jimmy Fallon

Jimmy Fallon appeared on Bravo's "Watch What Happen Live" on Thursday and told host Andy Cohen about his bizarre encounter with Lindsay Lohan during Hurricane Sandy.

Fallon, who was staying at an uptown Four Seasons hotel after his downtown apartment was left without power and water, ran into the actress at hip, uptown eatery, Tao.

As he walked into the restaurant, Fallon heard someone shout his name.

"It's Lindsay Lohan, and she goes 'What's up?' I go, 'What do you mean what's up? It's a hurricane. ... What are you doing here?' She goes, 'Are you here by yourself? ... How embarrassing.' ... And she goes, 'Why don't you just eat with us? Hang out with us?'" So that's exactly what the "Late Night" host did.

Fallon said Lohan was "loose and cool" and "totally sobes"—as in sober—throughout their meal.

Watch Fallon tell the full story below:
