The Weather Channel Has Huge Ratings Surge Thanks To Hurricane Sandy

Weather Channel

While millions are without power and thousands displaced in the Northeast, at least someone is benefiting from the devastating Hurricane Sandy.

Thanks to the disastrous past few days on the East Coast, The Weather Channel received its third-highest total day average ratings ever, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The channel drew an audience of 2.04 million and beat all the cable news networks in primetime among adults 25-54 and in overall day viewership.

According to data provided by the network, The Weather Channel said it was the top-rated cable network in the key demo in the 6am-9am time period Monday.

Viewing of the Weather Channel in the target demo on Monday peaked in the hours after Sandy made landfall, with the 10:30pm time slot reaching nearly 1.6 million viewers.

According to Deadline, that means the Comcast-owned channel outperformed the 1.043 million CNN viewers in the demo during "Piers Morgan Tonight," as well as the demo high of 924,000 for "The Fox Report with Shepard Smith " and the 611,000 best demo that MSNBC had for its "Rachel Maddow Show."

The only time the network has had better ratings was during Hurricane Isaac in August and Hurricane Irene in 2011.

George Lucas Is Still The Proud Owner Of Skywalker Ranch

$

lucas ranch

George Lucas may have sold the rights to Star Wars, but he's still the proud owner of the 4,700-acre Skywalker Ranch.

The director has spent around $100 million developing the impressive property north of San Francisco since 1978. Although he doesn't live there (at least as of 2002), Lucas uses the land as a retreat, as well as work and studio space.

Now with his $4 billion windfall from selling Lucasfilm, perhaps Lucas will spend more money building his dreamland.

Hot off his 1977 hit Star Wars, director George Lucas began acquiring land north of San Francisco in 1979.

Now-47,000 acres, his ranch is located in the coincidentally named Lucas Valley.

Lucas called it Skywalker Ranch, after the movie protagonist. The property also contains a Lake Ewok, along with other Star Wars themed places and things.

The Timing Of George Lucas' Disney Announcement Is Highly Suspect

$

George Lucas

"Are Disney and George Lucas Hiding Something?" is the title of Tuesday's New York Magazine article by Kevin Roose.

On Tuesday, "Star Wars" filmmaker George Lucas announced—in the midst of Hurricane Sandy, one of the Noertheast's worst storms in history—that he had sold Lucasfilm to Disney for $4.05 billion.

It was a huge announcement, made under suspicious circumstances.

The timing of the announcement seems as if Disney and Lucas wanted news of the acquisition to be buried under the story of Hurricane Sandy, undoubtedly the day's headline.

For this entertainment reporter, it's reminiscent of how celebrity couples, such as Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, announce they are divorcing on Thanksgiving or Christmas—when the media is mostly off on holiday.

Roose has three theories in his New York Mag article of why the billionaire filmmaker and the blockbuster studio chose to announce the news during a national disaster when even U.S. stock markets were closed:

1. You want to cheer up the citizens of storm-damaged cities on the East Coast by giving them a new Star Wars film to look forward to.

2. You were going to announce the deal this week anyway, and somewhat callously decided not to delay the release just because Hurricane Sandy happened.

3. The deal is a financial dud, and you want to get the news out with minimum scrutiny.

Based on what little we know of the finances of Lucasfilm (which was private, and 100 percent owned by George Lucas, until today), I'm guessing that something closer to option 3 is happening.

Roose goes on to write, "Compared to its other acquisitions (most notably, its 2006 purchase of Pixar for $7.4 billion), Disney is buying Lucasfilm for a steal. And at a glance, $4 billion does look low for an iconic movie series."

While some estimates have put the "Star Wars" franchise at a $30 billion valuation, Roose points out this is unlikely considering Lucas was willing to sell his entire company for roughly one-eighth of that.

Ultimately, despite hundreds of millions made in "Star Wars" merchandise, Roose believes "if Disney knows it overpaid, or even senses it might have, then burying the news makes all the sense in the world."

But one commenter on the story, who dubbed herself "aprilludgate," thinks Disney got a good deal, saying:

"What many people may not realize is that it's not just Star Wars and Indiana Jones that Disney paid for, but also a sound and special effects studio (among other entities) that Pixar already has been making use of. My fiance (who works at Pixar) brilliantly pointed that out to me last night. So it's a great move for Disney AND they got all of that for a great price. Plus, if my fiancé ever has to quit his job and work at Indrustrial Light and Magic (part of Lucasfilm), like several of his friends do, I still get to go to Disneyland for free! Love it."

In fact, most "Star Wars" enthusiasts who commented on the article believe, as "JREinATL" does, "$4B is probably a good valuation and a good deal for both sides ... Disney can wring value out of that $4B that other companies and Lucas alone can't. Disney can use the franchise in its theme parks and obtain synergies with its other franchises. Lucas, meanwhile, gets to cash out knowing that his life's work is in the best hands that are available and still be a major Disney shareholder."

Gollum Lord of the RingsSouthwest Airline's singing flight attendants don't have anything Air New Zealand.

In honor of December's release of Peter Jackson's first installment of the Hobbit series, shot in New Zealand, the airline teamed up with Weta Workshop to create a Middle Earth-themed safety video.

The four-minute spot has an exceptionally impressive production value and even has cameos from Peter Jackson and Gollum.

New Zealand's air travel business sure has embraced the franchise. Willington International Airport has erected a disconcerting 43-foot sculpture of Gollum suspended from the ceiling.

But America's getting in on the action, too. Earlier this month, Denny's announced a Hobbit-themed menu that features items ranging from "Gandalf's Gobble Melt" to a "Shire Sausage" stuffed "Build Your Own Hobbit Slam."

Kim Dotcom Finally Reveals The New Megaupload, Mega

Kim Dotcom

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Like a good Hollywood sequel, Megaupload is back.

Kim Dotcom, the founder of the shuttered file-sharing site that housed everything from family photos to blockbuster films, on Thursday announced a new online storage service called Mega that will give users direct control - and responsibility - over their files.

Mega will launch in January 2013, just before the internet entrepreneur is scheduled to face an extradition hearing to the United States where he and other Megaupload operators face charges of online piracy, fraud and money laundering.

In a snub to U.S. prosecutors, the site will not utilize U.S.-based hosting companies as partners in order to avoid being shut down by U.S. authorities.

The U.S. government alleges that Megaupload, once one of the world's most popular websites, was directly responsible for illegally uploaded content on the site and that it netted $175 million from unlawful activities.

"The new Mega will not be threatened by U.S. prosecutors," Dotcom told Reuters in an interview, adding that he was confident Mega would avoid violating U.S. law.

"The new Mega avoids any dealings with U.S. hosters, U.S. domains and U.S. backbone providers and has changed the way it operates to avoid another takedown," he said.

ENCRYPTION KEYS

Mega is the follow-up to Megaupload, which was shut down in January this year when New Zealand police helicopters swooped into the flamboyant Dotcom's mansion outside Auckland to seize computers and other evidence at the request of U.S. authorities.

Users of the new cloud-based service will be able to upload, store and share photos, text files, music and films, encrypt those files and grant access using unique decryption keys.

"You hold the keys to what you store in the cloud, not us," a statement on the Mega website said.

While the new site will operate faster and boast a bigger storage capacity, the encryption technology marks a major change from Megaupload as Mega operators will not have access to files and will therefore be immune to content liability.

Ensuring that files are not pirated will be the job of content owners, a major change from Megaupload, which the U.S. film industry says was directly responsible for taking down illegally uploaded content.

"Content owners can still remove infringing material and they will even get direct delete access if they agree not to make us responsible for actions of users," Dotcom said.

Dotcom's announcement comes just weeks after a U.S. federal judge ruled that Washington's criminal case against Megaupload will go forward for now.

Dotcom, a German national who holds New Zealand residency, faces an extradition hearing in March even though a New Zealand court ruled that the January raid and seizure were unlawful, while the nation's spy agency was found to have illegally spied on Dotcom.

Thursday's announcement was delayed for about one hour after the website was overloaded by users. According to Dotcom, much of the traffic was driven by U.S. authorities.

"FBI agents pressing reload...We see their IP addresses," he said on his Twitter feed.

Billy Joel Will Have An Even Harder Time Selling His Hamptons Home After Hurricane Sandy

Billy Joel

Billy Joel has struggled to sell his Hamptons abode for nearly two years now.

And Hurricane Sandy didn't do the piano man any favors.

Next to Joel's Sagaponack home, where there use to be a beach, there is now an eight-foot drop off, according to The Real Deal.

Jeffrey Colle, a high-end Hamptons developer located in Wainscott, told The Real Deal:

“There's an enormous amount of erosion in the main dune. ... The road stops and you walk onto the sand usually, and, well, now the road stops and it’s just eight feet down."

Joel had lowered the price several times on the four-bedroom, six-bathroom house. It's currently asking $16.75 million.

Joel and his now-ex wife bought the home in 2007 for $16.8 million, so now there's almost no chance Joel will even break even.

Now tour Joel's Hamptons House >

'John Carter' Was Proof That Disney Needed 'Star Wars'

$

John Carter

First Pixar, then Marvel and now Lucasfilm - entertainment giant Disney has a hunger for franchises in search for the next box-office hit.

George Lucas was not being completely serious when he said on Tuesday night that Walt Disney would be his retirement fund.

It is true that the creator of the Star Wars films is now one of Disney’s largest shareholders after agreeing this week to sell his company, Lucasfilm, to Disney for $4.05bn (£2.5bn) . But besides 40m Disney shares, the legendary director also gets a chunk of cash.

When talks between Lucas and Robert Iger, the chairman and chief executive of Disney, first began 18 months ago, however, the Hollywood producer was under little pressure to sell. Star Wars, which first hit cinemas in 1975, remains a cash cow even though the last film in the series was released seven years ago. Sean McGowan, an analyst at Needham, estimates that about $140m of Star Wars toys will be sold this year alone.

By contrast, this year has seen Disney’s film business come under increasing pressure. In March, the company warned that it would take a $200m hit after the box-office failure of John Carter, in what was the biggest loss on a single film in recent history.

Rich Ross, who ran Disney’s film studio, left within weeks. That failure, say analysts, was an embarrassing reminder to Disney of the costly and difficult challenge of creating films that have the potential to generate profits for years.

“They have a very chequered record in developing new franchises in-house,” says Matthew Harrigan, an analyst at Wunderlich Securities. “No matter how much money you spend on a film, the outcome is uncertain.”

It is not a surprise that the likes of R2-D2, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and other Star Wars characters attracted Disney’s chequebook. The films have raked in $4.54bn at the box office, leaving them second only to Warner Brothers’ Harry Potter series in the history books. No set of films, though, has made more money from toys. “For 35 years, it has been the most valuable toy franchise,” says McGowan.

Lucas is not the first time Iger has bet big on a maverick billionaire. At his first board meeting as chief executive in 2005, he said that the company needed to buy Pixar, the film-animation studio founded by Lucas and then sold in 1986 to a trio including Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. By the time Disney paid $7bn for it in 2006, Pixar had already produced Toy Story, the first in the most profitable ever series of animated films.

The swoop on Pixar was followed three years later by the $4.2bn purchase of Marvel Entertainment, the company behind action heroes such as Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers. Some shareholders balked at the prices, but both deals have paid off for Disney. The Avengers, which was released this summer, has already become the third-most successful film on record and helped drive a 24pc increase in Disney’s second-quarter profits.

For Iger, the importance of owning characters and film franchises with a global reach is magnified by the explosion of digital platforms that the internet has brought with it. “Technology has proved more friend than foe to great story-telling,” he said this week. “It allows us to distribute in ways we never thought would have been imaginable.”

Although Disney’s movie business steals the headlines, it is not the biggest driver of the company’s sales. ESPN, the television sports network, contributed $18.7bn of the $40.9bn of revenues Disney made last year. Disney’s theme parks were next, generating $11.8bn. The film studios, which are based in Burbank, California, were third with $6.3bn.

Iger, who stands down as chief executive in 2015, now faces the twin challenges of integrating Lucas’s company into Disney and ensuring that the next film is a box-office success. “The vast bulk of the deal has to be justified on the basis of the new movie releases,” says Harrigan.

The history of Pixar and Marvel suggests that goal is within Disney’s reach.

Though Hurricane Sandy has left much of Seaside Heights, New Jersey in ruins, the house from MTV's "Jersey Shore" is still standing strong.

While the Newark Star-Ledger reports the now-iconic shore house was left unscathed, owner Danny Merk, currently in Florida, is convinced the basement is flooded, according to ABC News.

The house has been home to the reality show stars for four seasons.

At the end of August, MTV announced the show would end after its current sixth season.

Merk plans to fix the house up once he returns to Seaside Heights in the coming week.

Meanwhile, rumors are swirling MTV is considering reuniting the "Jersey Shore" gang while Hurricane Sandy cleanup is underway.

'Star Wars' Actor Mark Hamill Freaked Out When He Heard About The New Trilogy – In August

Though most were surprised to hear about Lucasfilm's $4 billion sale to Disney, Star Wars actors Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were not shocked to hear about the new films.

According to Entertainment Weekly, George Lucas clued them in last year to the three sequels.

Last August Lucas met up with Hamill and Fisher, who played Luke and Leia Skywalker in the original series, to tell them about his plans to expand the franchise, and Hamill was floored.

"… When he said, “We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,” I was just gobsmacked," said Hamill. “'What? Are you nuts?!'”

However, Hamill since warmed to the idea more.

"I can see both sides of it. Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and that’s the way it should be — and it’s great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material. It’s one of those things: people either just don’t care for it or are passionate about it."

Khloe Kardashian Is Legitimately Good At Hosting 'The X Factor'

khloe kardashian x factor host

Khloe Kardashian made her debut as co-host of the Fox singing show "The X Factor" last night, and she was great.

She was a little bit apprehensive early on, but by the end of the show he had clearly become the alpha-host, reducing co-host Mario Lopez to a bit player.

As we saw on the last season of "The X Factor," hosting a live singing show is harder than it looks. You have to keep the show moving without seeming rammy, and you have to ask the judges and contestants questions that solicit cliche-free answers.

Khloe did that. Her best moment came after Simon Cowell ripped poor Willie Jones to shreds, and told his mentor Demi Lovato that the song choice was all wrong. Khloe pushed back at Simon, asking him exactly what he would have done differently, and Simon had nothing to say and started squirming in his chair.

Hopefully she doesn't get yelled at for putting the show's biggest star on the spot, because this moment was great.

Say what you will about the Kardashian clan, but Khloe is good at this.

One hallmark of James Bond movies is that they always open with a great action scene. In 'Skyfall,' Daniel Craig chases a henchman in Istanbul, crashing through a crowded market and over the city's rooftops.

To create some buzz, Honda, which provided the film's motorcycles, produced a behind the scenes look at how the opening chase scene was filmed.

It all started at an old military facility, where the stunts were planned and practiced, before the crew headed to the rooftops of Istanbul to get the real thing on film.

Watch the video on YouTube, or click through to see how it all happened.

The work begins at Longcross, an ex-military facility now used as a motorcycle venue.

The crew builds ramps to mimic what they'll be working with on set.

Pippa Middleton's Book On Partying Is Not Very Good

$
0
0

pippa fashion showChristopher Howse admits he would rather not party with Pippa Middleton, reviewing Celebrate: A Year of Festivities for Families and Friends.

Pippa Middleton has “always loved to write”, indeed it is a “passion”, so it is sad that she has had to wait until the age of 29, four years older than Keats at his death, to achieve publication. In her first sentence she sportingly refers to the “global recognition” attained by her bottom.

Her opinions, however, remain unpredictable . “I don’t think,” she declares, “there’s a right way or a wrong way to celebrate.” This is surprising. If she doesn’t think there’s a wrong way to celebrate, we might have expected more photographs of her in the cheaper celebrity magazines.

The chosen celebrations mark the seasons, with nods to the comfortably named Bonfire Night and Pancake Day. There are plenty of photos of Pippa: Pippa carrying some smoked salmon and beetroot “crostinis”; Pippa threading a conker; Pippa in dark blue shorts being treated as a wheelbarrow on the beach by some chap in light blue shorts; Pippa helping a little boy paint an egg; Pippa helping a little girl stir a Christmas pud. I made it 53 photos of Pippa, some full-page. Yet the globally recognised bottom hardly gets a look-in, making a half-hearted entrance on page 163, and exiting with another plate of canapés on page 164.

The flavour is of a twentysomething, smiling, prosperous, interiorly designed life, with other people’s children, surely, as accessories. Some 40 pages are devoted to the ideal children’s party, held in the sunny outdoors. If you’re stuck for an idea, try a “sack race”. It works like this: “Everyone stands along a starting line and, on ‘Go’, players start jumping in their sacks towards the finish line. Over-enthusiastic racers will most likely get themselves in a tangle and fall.” Yes, I think I get the idea. But how can you tell who has won? “The first person to cross the finish line is declared the winner.”

And for grown-ups, quite like what does nothing say summer? A barbecue. “Nothing says summer quite like a barbecue,” we are told. “Even with cloud-ridden skies, there is always a good British cheer that the weather has held and – most importantly – it’s not raining!” Isn’t it? “Most guests will, without doubt, still relish the chance of eating outside wrapped up in blankets and coats.”

But what about decorations? “There is no real need for decorations when throwing a barbecue party – let the summer garden, in all its vibrant and luscious splendour, speak for itself.”

Then there are picnics. Pippa Middleton has a strange theory about these: “The decline of coaching inns – until then relied upon for a decent meal – meant people had to cater for themselves.” In the hamper, what better than the Cornish pasty? “This traditional British pie has attained iconic and protected status and is instantly recognisable by the distinctive shape.” But is the recognition global, like Pippa’s? Then, for the more adventurous, camping is “rather like a picnic, but it brings an extra sense of camaraderie”.

What is the point of this thick, colourful book, except as a sort of cultural tea bag for the American market? Who will rely on its recipes for cooking a turkey, a Victoria sandwich or a leg of lamb?

In a way, though, it is an autobiography. There is a breathing human life hidden behind the team effort of the photographer, props mistress, recipe tester, “craft and creative companion”, two historical researchers, a cocktail consultant and a florist, all duly thanked, and Sarah Reynolds, the mysterious “ear to my ideas and eye to my words”, a “stalwart travelling companion on this literary journey”.

And at the edge of the soft Home Counties focus, there are worrying hints. Pippa’s grandmother convinced her that the currants in rabbit-shaped biscuits were squashed flies. Pippa’s favourite pudding at school was “birdseed”. Even at picnics there is “wildlife passing close by”. A cocktail called Blood and Sand is photographed with an edible ant floating in it. At least I hope it is edible. The next book (“I’m having new ideas all the time”) might well fall into the misery lit category. A good title would be “The Wrong Way to Celebrate”.
