The Walking Dead Season Premiere Demolished All Basic Cable Ratings

the walking dead

"The Walking Dead" won't stop breaking records.

Last night's season three premiere of "The Walking Dead" opened to 10.9 million viewers, making it the biggest telecast for any drama series in basic cable history.

This blew away the show's season two premiere of 7.3 million viewers which, at the time, brought in AMC's best numbers to date.

Throughout its three airings last night, the show took in an estimated 15.2 million views all together.

That's impressive considering:

1. The carriage dispute between DISH and AMC takes nearly 14 million households out of the equation.

and

2. AMC live-streamed the show from its site last night for fans and DISH subscribers to view.

Despite its record-high series ratings, it wasn't enough to beat out "Hatfields and McCoys" record 14.3 million viewers that made it the most-watched telecast in basic cable history.

Here's how "The Walking Dead" following has built over time:

Brad Pitt is the first-ever man to shill Chanel No. 5 in an advertising campaign. He also stars in what is one of the most awkward ads we've ever seen. He spouts koan-like truisms such as "every journey ends but we go on" while refusing to maintain eye contact with the camera. The black-and-white spot was made by filmmaker Joe Wright.

Jonathan Nolan Finally Explains Robin's Role In 'The Dark Knight Rises'

joseph gordon levitt john blake the dark knight rises

It's been one of the biggest unanswered questions from "The Dark Knight Rises" left open for interpretation.

Who was Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Robin?

We finally have an answer.

IGN interviewed Nolan at New York Comic Con asking about the perplexing end to the Caped Crusader's run in "The Dark Knight Rises."

Though Nolan offered some vague thoughts on Alfred and Bruce Wayne's final encounter in Paris, he was slightly more specific on the mention of Robin's name at the end of the film.

"It's a wink at the audience," tells Nolan. "I think, what we endeavored to do, was not the complete story of Batman, but our complete story of this character. … The wink towards Robin was an acknowledgment that he liked the character, and I liked the character. It's a huge part of that universe for 70 years."

There you have it. Nolan wasn't suggesting that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was the Boy Wonder or Nightwing. His name was just "coincidentally" Robin as a nod to the famous character. He was no more than John Blake.

We'll still believe he was the future Nightwing. After all, Gordon-Levitt did very well act as Batman's Robin in the final film.

And, the actor himself has expressed some interest in a spinoff, too

Britney Spears

It isn't cheap being a pop star.

Despite her reported $15 million "X Factor" paycheck and landing a spot as Forbes' second-highest paid woman in Hollywood this year, Britney Spears spends a lot to maintain her image (hair extensions aren't cheap!) and lead her celebrity lifestyle.

According to TMZ, new documents filed in Spears' conservatorship case, as of December 31, 2010, reveal an interesting look at exactly where the singer spends her money.

In addition to her hefty "X Factor" paycheck and concert tour grosses, today Spears also earns millions from endorsement deals and a fragrance line with Elizabeth Arden.

From childcare to haircare, see where Spears spends her hard-earned cash.

This year, Britney Spears will get $15 million for one season as a judge on Simon Cowell's Fox show, "X Factor." She will also get money from her fragrance deal with Elizabeth Arden and various endorsement deals.

In 2011, Spears' Femme Fatale concert raked in $68 million after the singer performed 75 shows.

But in 2010, new docs show that Spears' conservatorship was worth around $32.4 million. Here's what she spent it on ...

ADLAND WEEPS: Scarlett Johansson Splits With Nate Naylor

Scarlet Johansson and Nate NaylorScarlett Johansson, 27, has moved on from New York adman/boyfriend, Nate Naylor, 38, according to People. As Business Insider previously noted the two have been quietly dating since mid-2011.

Though, Johansson's rep is not confirming any details of the break-up, sources told People that she broke-up with him, and while he is reportedly quite upset, he most likely saw it coming.

Most people were surprised the pair stayed together as long as they did. He may have been the tall, dark, and handsome (older) man, but they came from very different worlds. Things didn't look too great for Naylor when, in July, Johansson was spotted sunbathing in France with her bodyguard.

Naylor is currently a freelance creative executive, with an impressive resume featuring Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco. But Johansson is one of the biggest movie stars of the moment.

Naylor seems to have been just a nice moment out of the spotlight for Johansson — she rebounded from her two-year marriage to Ryan Reynolds by dating Sean Penn, and now, reports are saying she may be back with her ex-boyfriend, Jared Leto.

Why 'The Bachelor' Will Never Be Successfully Tried For Racial Discrimination

$

The-Bachelor-Contestants

A U.S. District Court has ruled that even if ABC discriminates in show casting, it doesn't matter because they're protected by the First Amendment.

Back in April, Christopher Johnson and Nathaniel Claybrooks sued ABC after both tried out for the coveted role of the network's "Bachelor," and weren't selected.

The two accused the network of racial discrimination suggesting "they and other minority applicants have been denied the equal opportunity to contract to be the Bachelor or the Bachelorette."

Both men claimed this would be in direct violation of 42 U.S.C. § 1981, a statuate that “prohibits intentional race discrimination in the making and enforcing of contracts involving both public and private actors

Note that through 16 seasons of "The Bachelor" and eight seasons of "The Bachelorette" there has never been a person of color as either of the titular characters.

The two allege that decision is not a mistake, suggesting ABC makes a conscious decision based on the show's "predominantly white viewership."

Despite the men's assertions, U.S. District Court Judge Aleta Trauger ordered the motion to dismiss.

According to Trauger's ruling, though the court may find ABC responsible of prejudice, they're protected by the First Amendment right to control the show's creative content.

From the suit ruling via Deadline:

"Thus, the court must assume, as alleged in the Amended Complaint, that the defendants did discriminate on the basis of race, that they did so to conform the content of their Shows to cater to the viewpoint of their target audience concerning interracial relationships, that the Shows’ content thereby perpetuates racial stereotypes about interracial relationships, and that the plaintiffs seek to alter/correct the defendants’ casting decision process to address that issue.

Regardless, as discussed herein, the First Amendment protects the defendants’ ability to control the content of their own programs unilaterally … because the defendants – not the plaintiffs – are entitled to control the casting of their own programs in the manner in which they see fit."

According to Trauger, § 1981 would force ABC to "employ race-neutral criteria in the casting process," which would also regulate the creative content of its shows.

Essentially, even if Claybrooks and Johnson are right, they will never win their case since ABC is protected by the First Amendment.

Larry Flynt Beat Playboy In A Huge Adult Entertainment Consolidation

larry flynt

Just a month after pay-per-view porn firm New Frontier mysteriously ousted its own CEO, the adult entertainment provider has been purchased by Hustler magazine founder, Larry Flynt.

The deal makes Flynt one of the largest consolidated players in the adult entertainment business, owning both the content production side and the TV distribution channels.

Manwin Holding, which owns Playboy's digital and entertainment assets, including Playboy TV, offered $24.3 million for the fledgling New Frontier, but the company held out and it paid off — Larry Flynt Productions ended up purchasing the company for $33 million cash, despite New Frontier being chronically unprofitable.

While New Frontier's TV programming services include Penthouse TV and subscription websites, Flynt Productions currently owns TV networks, magazines, web sites, nightclubs and a casino.

"The acquisition of New Frontier Media fits perfectly with our strategic plan for the growth of our company," said LFP president Michael Klein. "The addition of these assets to our portfolio strengthens us significantly moving forward."

Flynt sealed the deal by offering "$2.02 per New Frontier share in the deal that would take the company private. Investors could get some additional money depending on how much cash the firm has when the deal closes," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The acquisition, which is expected to close by year's end, comes just a month after New Frontier CEO Michael Weiner's dismissal.

New Frontier had also received unsolicited buyout offers over the past several months, including one from shareholder Longkloof Ltd. New Frontier recently fired CEO Michael Weiner, and its board pressured a member to resign over suspicions he and Weiner were allied with Longkloof, reports AP, which the board member denied.

DreamWorks Founders Spielberg, Geffen & Katzenberg Donate $30M Each To MPTF

$

Steven Speilberg Jeffrey Katzenberg and David GeffenSteven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen will donate $30 million each to the Motion Picture & Television Fund's capital campaign, the Hollywood nonprofit said Tuesday.

The three are co-founders of DreamWorks SKG, the studio behind "Gladiator" and "Saving Private Ryan."

All three men have been past supported of the fund and Katzenberg serves as MPTF Foundation chairman.

Their total commitment of $90 million will go a long way toward helping the MPTF reach its $350 million fundraising goal, which the nonprofit will use to build its endowment and support its work providing services and financial assistance to entertainment-industry members in need.

"It becomes very personal when someone you know or have worked with is cared for at 'the Home' or a crew member is helped financially by MPTF," Spielberg said in a statement. "The mission 'we take care of our own' is suddenly very real and tangible, and so this new donation is an extension of what we have been doing for a number of years to support that mission."

Added Katzenberg: "Marilyn and I are so happy to join together with my partners and friends, Steven Spielberg and David Geffen, to support our industry's most important and valuable charitable organization. Hopefully, with this gift, the MPTF will get even closer to reaching its ambitious goal for its endowment campaign."

The three entertainment moguls are not the only industry figures to write big checks to the MPTF. Among those donating have been actor Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne, who pledged $20 million to the organization; media mogul Barry Diller, who donated $30 million; and producer Steve Bing, who donated $30 million. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. has contributed $20 million.

The fundraising drive comes after a tumultuous period in the MPTF's history.  A controversial decision to close the MPTF's long-term-care facility and hospital in 2009 led to nearly three years of protests. In the end, a grassroots campaign led by patients and their families persuaded the MPTF's leadership to drop its original plan and keep those facilities open.

In January, the MPTF bowed to pressure and announced it would begin accepting new residents for the first time since it announced plans to close the facility in 2009.

A Hotel Employee Claims He Was Fired For Complimenting Jennifer Aniston

A now ex-employee of a Santa Fe, N.M., resort claims that he was fired for complimenting Jennifer Aniston.

The shuttle bus driver told a group of guests that the 43-year-old celebrity was "very sweet and much more petite than I thought," reports TMZ, but when hotel management got wind of his praises, they fired him for allegedly violating the hotel's privacy policy regarding famous visitors.

Terry Siegler was shuttling guests at the Encantado Resort, where Aniston was staying during a shoot for her new film, "We're the Millers." The guests had allegedly just spotted Aniston at the hotel spa, and asked Siegler if he'd seen her too. He said yes, and offered up some kind words about the famous lovelorn, now love-struck, actress.

Back at the hotel, the guests discussed this conversation, Siegler told TMZ, and were overheard by a member of Aniston's entourage. The actress' buddy reportedly informed hotel management, which then fired Siegler from his $30,000-a-year job for violating a celebrity guest's privacy.

The general manager of the hotel told TMZ, "I cannot confirm anything about our employees, but I will say that we have a very strict confidentiality policy and we do enforce those policies."

Most businesses that commonly see high-profile guests have confidentiality agreements for their workers. In April, a Virgin Atlantic employee resigned following allegations that she routinely tipped off the booking details of the airline's celebrity clientele to paparazzi. But Siegler didn't dish on the star to a tabloid—he was simply responding to a question from a guest.

"They brought [Jennifer] up first...." he told TMZ. "Was I supposed to deny it?"

Siegler reportedly is considering a wrongful termination suit.

New Emails Hurt Dish 'In A Big Way' In Battle Against AMC

$

walking dead

It was a big day in court in the battle of Dish vs. AMC in the VOOM case.

Deleted Dish emails were discovered over the weekend and presented in court Tuesday, “hurting [Dish Network] in a big way," reports Deadline.

The emails concern AMC's $2.5 billion breach of contract suit against Dish after the satellite company decided to drop the now-defunct VOOM HD channels in 2008.

VOOM's channels, formerly owned by Cablevision, were packaged with AMC.

It is “the most damaging evidence to date,” Susquehanna Financial Group’s Thomas Claps, who is monitoring the case, says of the emails.

In October, Judge Richard Lowe said that before the jurors on the case deliberate, he would, according to Bloomberg, "instruct them about Dish’s destruction of e-mails before and after the lawsuit was filed. Lowe granted AMC’s motion for sanctions, saying Dish should have anticipated a lawsuit and begun saving e-mails when it notified Voom it might terminate the contract. Dish said the e-mails were automatically deleted."

But AMC's team uncovered the emails on Dish’s hard drives, and now they're shedding new light on a key issue in the trial, according to Deadline:

Did VOOM’s backers (Cablevision and AMC, which the cable company spun off last year) live up to a condition in their carriage contract that required them to invest at least $100M a year in the fledgling networks? Dish says they didn’t — giving it the right to drop the channels because the $100M requirement applied just to domestic programming, not overhead or overseas expenses.

A 2005 email exchange between Ergen and his chief negotiator with VOOM, Michael Schwimmer, reveals an appendix to the agreement with permitted expenditures and “overhead expenses are specifically referenced," Clap says.

Equally as damaging, another email exchange from 2007 "shows execs agreeing that VOOM backers had to spend $100M a year on the venture — not just programming," according to an advisor on the case. "Schwimmer’s own words on April 27, 2007 are now directly inconsistent with his testimony" that the agreement was just about programming.

After Tuesday's deliberations in which New York Supreme Court Judge Richard Lowe III ruled that Dish”s only remaining damages expert can’t testify in AMC’s breech of contract suit, Dish Network is down nearly one percent – while AMC Networks shares were up 2.7 percent in mid-afternoon trading.

Victoria's Secret Angel Shares How She Really Feels About Photoshopping

$

erin heatherton

Victoria's Secret Angel Erin Heatherton thinks that young girls are too smart to believe Photoshopped images like the ones in her company's catalogues.

Heatherton spoke to Fashionista about Photoshop and said that criticisms of heavy editing are a "waste of time."

Heatherton, who is dating actor Leonardo DiCaprio, said that parents, not the media, should teach children what healthy body image is.

She tells Fashionista:

"It’s not a fair message, but at the same time I think we’re all intelligent enough to know the difference between what’s real and what’s not. I think that’s something that children should be taught by their parents, it should be taught in schools. Healthy body image is not something that you’re going to learn from fashion magazines. But at the same time, Photoshop makes things look beautiful just as you have special effects in movies. It’s just part of life and I think that you’re missing the main problem. I think the main issue is people just knowing their own body, having strength in their own body image and their own confidence, which shouldn’t be affected by these kinds of things."

Academics have criticized Victoria's Secret, in particular its annual Fashion Show, for promoting unhealthy body types. All of the models are very thin.

But Heatherton said it's not the fashion industry's responsibility to promote a normal body type:

"We’re not selling reality, we’re selling a story," Heatherton said. "It’s all about creating this fantasy."

Celebrities Called Out Romney On Twitter During Last Night's Debate

It was clear who won the presidential debate last night in Hollywood.

Celebs were not kind to Governor Mitt Romney during the second live presidential debate last night.

For the most part, Romney received criticism for his stammering, his five-point plan, and, of course, his mention of women in binders, among other things.

(Sidenote: If you haven't stumbled upon the bindersfullofwomen tumblr, check it out.)

Unlike the first debate, Obama was praised for his comeback after a lackluster first debate.

Moderator Candy Crowley was also better received than VP debate moderator Martha Raddatz.

The only person who really gave Obama a tough time last night was Donald Trump, calling him "no Bill Clinton."

'Iron Man' Actor Admits He's Never Seen The Movie

paul bettany

"Iron Man," is undoubtedly one of the most popular superhero film franchises. Both films combined have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. However, not everyone has seen the film.

In particular, one of the movie's actors.

Paul Bettany, who voices Tony Stark's IA system J.A.R.V.I.S., told Digital Spy he has never watched any of the films, nor has any interest in doing so.

"I have no idea what those movies are like, said Bettany. "My kids love them. My kids have seen them. It's not because of any snobbish-ness. It's just not my thing ... no disrespect Marvel."

However, Iron Man's Tony Stark shouldn't feel stiffed. Bettany said he doesn't watch many of his films.

"I've never seen one of them, but that's not because ... there's a bunch of my movies I'm in physically that I haven't seen. This just happens to be one of them."

Still, it creates a minor problem for the actor when dealing with fans of his character since he has no idea what they're talking about.
