Ryan Seacrest is looking beyond "American Idol's" end next season and locking down his contract with E!.

The producer and television personality has extended his contract with the NBCUniversal-owned cable channel. Specifically, he'll remain the host of its "Live From the Red Carpet" series," according to a network press release.

E! didn't disclose the terms of the contract renewal, but Deadline sources say it has been extended for two years.

“NBCUniversal has long been an important partner to me, and I’m excited to continue our strategic relationship,” Seacrest, 40, said in a statement. “Live television is both thrilling and challenging in countless ways, and it’s a privilege to be a part of E!’s ‘Live From the Red Carpet' shows. It’s truly a credit to the entire cast and incredible crew that we're consistently able to produce the best awards season coverage in the business.”

ryan seacrest e contractSeacrest joined E! back in 2006. In nearly a decade, his presence at the network had diminished from anchoring E! News and other programs to simply hosting on the red carpet.

At the same time, Seacrest has produced the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" series and its spinoffs for E! under separate pacts with his production company, Ryan Seacrest Productions.

RSP also produces Bravo's "Shahs of Sunset" and the upcoming Jennifer Lopez drama, "Shades of Blue," for NBC.

Seacrest has also signed on to provide late night coverage at the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics for NBC.

In addition to "Idol," he continues to produce and host ABC's "Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve" and his syndicated radio shows.

CNN just launched its own BuzzFeed killer

$

Screen Shot 2015 10 20 at 11.07.36 AMOn Tuesday, CNN launched Great Big Story, its new millennial-focused competitor to BuzzFeed and Vice.

With Great Big Story, CNN wants to create video content that is shareable on social networks, conducive to native advertising, and appeals to “urban-located, globally curious 25- to 35-year-olds,” according to Fast Company.

One of the primary motivators for this launch seems to be a concern by CNN that its ad dollars might dry up in the coming years, if viewing patterns in younger audiences continue to shift away from cable news. CNN no doubt wants an outlet to expand native advertising, as it's not a natural fit for the "hard news" its audience is accustomed to.

CNN has a “branded content studio,” called Courageous, but sponsored content on CNN proper is always clearly marked, and sometimes even appears on a completely separate part of the website, Fast Company reports.

This won’t be the case with Great Big Story.

Fast Company writes that on Great Big Story, native advertising “won’t be labeled any differently than strictly editorial content.” CNN clarified to Business Insider that this means native advertising won't live in its own particular section, though it will be labeled with something like "presented by." As of now, CNN says there aren't any examples of native advertising on the site, so it's hard to know what it will look like exactly.

As to audience, CNN thinks there is open space in the market somewhere in between Vice and BuzzFeed, which it defines respectively as “shouty” and “cotton candy,” according to Fast Company

Fast Company points to CNN’s apparent mandate to its Great Big Story team, in the form of an internal sales video:

"What if there were more to your social feed than empty clickbait and cat videos? What if there were real stories, great big ones? About new frontiers, the human condition, and our planet, and its tastes and flavors? Stories so curious and compelling, so jaw-droppingly awesome, that at the end of the day you feel completely full?"

Content on Great Big Story’s site on its first day includes, “We Found Lisa Frank!,” “What It’s Like to Fly into a Hurricane on Purpose,” and “The Untold Story of the Kool-Aid Man.”

'Ash vs Evil Dead' star Bruce Campbell explains the most bizarre fan gift he's ever received

Since his debut movie, the cult classic “The Evil Dead,” Bruce Campbell has been a fixture at conventions and events that celebrate not only his Ash character fin those movies but also other memorable titles like “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.,” “Bubba Ho-Tep,” and “Burn Notice.

Always appreciative of his fans over the years, he's had people show his face tattooed on them, and has even accommodated a breast autograph from time to time.

But then there are the gifts he's received from fans that he thought were just plain strange. And while speaking to Business Insider about his new Starz series, "Ash vs Evil Dead," in which he reprises the legendary cult character, Campbell opened up about one of the most bizarre ones.

"I had a real gothy kind of woman come up to my table at a convention once and she said she had some poetry that 'You'll reeaaallly like,'" Campbell said. "I took it and I thanked her. She left and I started leafing through it and it was just the most offensive stuff you've ever read. I mean dark, twisted, sick, unrated. I thought, 'Poetry I'd really like!?'"

Campbell said that's a big misconception, because he's known in the horror film community everyone assumes he must like all things horror. And though he admits he likes many horror movies, it doesn't mean he also likes, as he said, "Things that are horrific."

"It could have been bounded in human flesh for all I know," he said. "I should have just thrown it away right then. Signing breasts, though, that's never unpleasant."

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” premieres on Starz on October 31.

Democratic presidential candidate Martin O'Malley broke out into song during his Tuesday interview on "The View."

The former Maryland governor brought out his guitar and sang some verses from Taylor Swift's hit single "Bad Blood" with a Celtic twist.

"Because baby now we got bad blooood. You know it used to be mad loooove. So take a look at what you've done," O'Malley crowed.

"Now we got proooblems."

O'Malley is the lead vocalist and guitar player for the Celtic rock band O'Malley's March, and he sometimes plays songs for his supporters on the campaign trail.

He suggested he chose Swift's song because her rival Katy Perry was doing a benefit concert for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner. "Bad Blood" is rumored to be about Perry.

Comedian Margaret Cho called out NBC's "Saturday Night Live" for booking Donald Trump as host and criticized the sketch show for its record with Asian-Americans.

“Why has there never been an Asian-American host, cast member or musical guest on ‘SNL’ in 41 years? Forty-one years,” Cho told TheWrap. “Yet they want Donald Trump, a known racist, a known sexist, who disgustingly wants to have sex with his daughter. Who does he think he is, Woody Allen?”

Cho's comments arrive a day after a coalition of Hispanic advocacy groups, The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, submitted an open letter admonishing NBC for allowing Trump to host "SNL" and asking for the network to reconsider.

"We are appalled that you would enable Trump's hateful speech for nothing [more] than a ratings ploy and ask that you rescind the 'SNL' invitation," the organization wrote.

The organization had previously rallied against controversial comments Trump had made about Mexican immigrants during his announcement that he would be running for the Republican candidacy for president in June.

jackie chan Opening Monologue SNLAs for Asian-American representation on the show, "Saturday Night Live" has had a couple Asian-American hosts includng Jackie Chan and Lucy Liu. As far as cast members, Fred Armisen is part Japanese and Rob Schneider is half Filipino.

Cho had a few casting suggestions for the NBC late-night sketch show.

“I’m proposing Ken Jeong. I would like to be the musical guest. That’s all I ask,” Cho, 46, who is guest starring Jeong's ABC comedy, "Fresh Off the Boat" on Friday, saiddw. “They would take a momentous step forward, if they include Ken Jeong or myself. If not us, George Takei, who is hilarious and ultimately needs to be given that honor."

NBC declined to comment for this story.

Apple Music already has more paying subscribers than every other service — except one (AAPL)

Last night at the WSDJ conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple Music already has 6.5 million paying subscribers.

That's pretty impressive, given that it's only been on the market since June 30 and included a three-month free trial — so payments didn't start until September 30. As this chart from Statista shows, Apple Music is already ahead of every other music service except for Spotify, which has been accepting subscribers for several years now.

It helps that a link to turn on Apple Music is built into the Music app that comes with with iOS9, which ships on every new iPhone and iPad, and which millions of existing iPhone owners have already upgraded to.

So how does the PSL manage to taste like pumpkin pie when it has so little of makes pumpkin pie so awesome? For the answer, we must turn to science.

Jeremy Renner, who starred in 'American Hustle' with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, says it's 'not my job' to help female co-stars negotiate higher salaries

Jennifer Lawrence recently penned a hotly-discussed essay about the wage disparity in Hollywood.

The essay, which was published in Lena Dunham's newsletter, Lenny, noted that the actress was paid significantly less than her male co-stars in the movie "American Hustle."  So was her co-star Amy Adams.

Fellow female stars like Jessica Chastain and Rooney Mara have since said they've been paid less than male co-stars too, and Sienna Miller said she turned down a role in a play that was offering significantly less than the male lead was given.

Bradley Cooper, who starred in "American Hustle" with Lawrence and Adams in 2013 and negotiated a higher contract than them, was so taken aback by Lawrence's essay that he told Reuters he wants to begin teaming up with his female co-stars to negotiate fair salaries together before committing to a film.

But not every actor is planning to go as far as Cooper.

Business Insider asked Jeremy Renner, who also starred in "American Hustle," if he would also be willing to negotiate alongside his female co-stars on future projects. He also was paid more than Adams and Lawrence for his role in the film, according to a Sony email leaked during the hack on the company.

"That's not my job," Renner said, while taking part in an intimate press day on Tuesday for the new "One Life/Live Them" campaign he's doing for Rémy Martin Cognac.

"I don't know contracts and money and all that sort of stuff," Renner went on to say.

Adding he fully supports actresses receiving equal pay as actors, he said he's more focused on his craft than what everyone is making.

"I'm a performer and I know human behavior. When it comes to that sort of stuff I let other people deal with that," said the two-time Oscar nominee. "I do what I'm good at, that's what I focus on."

It should be noted that actors and actresses are rarely involved in the negotiating process and leave the deals to agents, managers, and lawyers.

american hustleThis is evident, as most of the actresses who have spoken out recently about the wage disparity issue have noted that they only learned about how much more their male actors were paid long after they worked on the film.

Cooper also told Reuters, "Usually you don't talk about the financial stuff, you have people."

Lawrence, who Forbes named 2015's world's highest-paid actress with $52 million (Robert Downey Jr. was the highest-paid actor in 2015 with $80 million), said in her essay that she learned how much Cooper, Renner, and the other male actors made on "American Hustle" through the emails leaked following the Sony hack. And that she wasn't mad at Sony, which released the film, but herself for giving up too early in the negotiation process.

"But if I’m honest with myself," she went on to write in the essay, "I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight. I didn’t want to seem 'difficult' or 'spoiled.' At the time, that seemed like a fine idea, until I saw the payroll on the Internet and realized every man I was working with definitely didn’t worry about being 'difficult' or 'spoiled.'"

The first disclaimer on the screen reads "For recreational use only. Interfering with major historical events is illegal and could have unintended consequences for all of humanity." Another reads, "Avoid your past self at all costs, as this could potentially cause a rift in the space-time continuum."

Bob Barker

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Former "The Price is Right" host Bob Barker took a fall on a sidewalk and was treated for a cut to his head and scraped leg, a spokesman said.

Barker, 91, was out for his daily walk near his house Tuesday when he stumbled on uneven pavement, longtime friend and publicist Henri Bollinger said.

Two police officers who were nearby came to his aid and summoned an ambulance. Barker was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he received stitches for the head wound, Bollinger said.

He walked out of the hospital, said Bollinger, who drove him home.

It's fortunate that the injuries weren't more serious, his friend said, but Barker's exercise schedule will be temporarily curtailed.

"He's upset he can't work out and take his walks. Considering his age, he's in pretty good shape," Bollinger said.

Barker was the longtime host of "The Price is Right," retiring from the game show in 2007 after 35 years.

He remains busy as an advocate of animal rights in the United States and other countries, Bollinger said.

Michael j fox

October 21, 2015, is "Back to the Future Day."

That's because in "Back to the Future Part II," Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) sets his DeLorean time machine to that day to check on his future family.

After the success of 1985's "Back to the Future," the sequel continues the time-traveling adventures of Marty and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) as they head to the future, along with Marty's girlfriend Jennifer, to keep Marty and Jennifer's kids from following a dark path.

Most of the "Back to the Future" cast returned to reprise their roles in the sequel, which was shot back-to-back with a third film, completing the trilogy by 1990.

While makeup was used to age the cast for "Part II," here's what the cast members actually look like 26 years into the future and what they have been up to since.

NOW: Since 2010, Fox has had a recurring role on "The Good Wife" as a rival attorney to Julianna Margulies' Alicia Florrick, a role that has earned him four Emmy nominations.

In 1998, Fox disclosed that he had Parkinson's and mainly focused on voice-over work during the early 2000s, leaving his role on "Spin City" in 2001. He later returned to on-screen roles and eventually starred in his own sitcom, "The Michael J. Fox Show," for NBC, which aired for a season.

11 things 'Back to the Future 2' got right about today's tech culture

Back to the future wearable tech

In "Back to the Future: Part 2," our hero Marty McFly travels forward in time to save his children.

The day Marty goes to — October 21, 2015 — is today.

And while "Back to the Future: Part 2slightly overestimated where we'd be in 2015 — flying cars and hover boards aren't readily available after all — there's a surprising number of things that the film predicted that either already exist or are close enough that in two years it wouldn't be surprising to see them be reality.

From fingerprint scanning to video games that don't require controllers, here's the technology that the creators of "Back to the Future" correctly guessed in 1989.

Not only did the movie get wearable computing right, they even included devices that look like a mix of Google Glass and the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset — though they didn't address the Google Glass backlash.

It's fair to say that when most people think of '80s computers, the Macintosh is the first thing that comes to mind.

Computers that take orders via voice controls: Siri, anyone? And the new Apple TV emphasis on Siri integration makes it even weirder.

The simple reason 'Back To The Future's' screenwriter chose October 21, 2015 to be the day Marty McFly travels in time

$
0
0

marty mcfly, back to the future, delorian

October 21, 2015 is "Back to the Future Day."

It's the day Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to the future in their time machine, the DeLorean, in Stephen Spielberg's "Back To The Future: Part II."

The date was carefully chosen for one simple reason: It was a day, theoretically, the Chicago Cubs could win the World Series.

In the movie, Marty McFly notices while time traveling that the Cubs finally win the world series in 2015, and buys a sports almanac so his younger self can make bets and get rich when he returns from the future. But his nemesis, Biff, gets his hands on the almanac and gets rich instead.

"The Cubs winning the World Series was the most absurd thing we could think of [for someone to bet on]," the movie's producer and screenwriter Bob Gale tells The Wall Street Journal's Mike Ayers

"If the Cubs were going to win the World Series, what date would that be on? In 1988, when we wrote this, there was only one set of playoffs, not two. If the World Series was going on and the Cubs were going to sweep the World Series, it could’ve happened on October 21. That’s how we arrived on that day.”

In 1988, the Cubs finished with a 77-85 record. In 2015, they posted a 97-65 mark. Considering they've dropped the first three games of the NLCS to the Mets, it seems very unlikely that they'll wind up winning the World Series this year.

Jimmy Kimmel didn't let Donald Trump get away with a last-minute cancellation on his show without some ribbing.

"You know Donald Trump was supposed to be here tonight," the host, whose currently broadcasting from Brooklyn, told a booing audience on Tuesday night. "And now, he's glad he didn't come, I guess."

Kimmel said Trump's people called on Monday night to cancel his appearance. He called their excuse "cryptic" and that he had another important political commitment.

"But, he did want me to relay the message to you that if he had been here, he would've been great," Kimmel said.

He went on to say that he can't wait to hear what this political commitment was. "Why did he cancel? We told him there were cameras here, right?"

Trump has appeared this season on Fallon's late-show competitors Stephen Colbert’s CBS “Late Show” and Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show” on NBC.

His representative told Variety: “Unfortunately Mr. Trump now has a political obligation that will prevent him from joining as planned, but we have rescheduled to join in-studio in LA over the next few weeks.”
