Before Matt Damon starred in "Good Will Hunting," he really hit the books at Harvard.

And before James Franco turned on his wild side in "Freaks and Geeks," the math wiz interned at Lockheed Martin.

We rounded up 30 celebrities who are high school valedictorians, Ivy Leaguers, MENSA members, and certified geniuses in their own rights.

These stories of actors, musicians, and TV personalities' brilliance may surprise you.

Allison Williams is more than the smart one on "Girls."

Growing up under Brian Williams' roof, the "Girls" actress wasn't allowed to act professionally until she graduated from college. She studied English and archaeology at Yale — taking the kind of classes that make you feel like "lying on the ground thinking about things," she says.

When she didn't get a part in Yale's big musical as a freshman, she joined the improv group instead and found she had dad's comedy genes.

Ashton Kutcher hoped to attend MIT or Purdue to study engineering.

But the former "Punk'd" host lost his scholarships when he broke into his high school as a prank. He ended up at the University of Iowa, but dropped out at age 19 to pursue modeling. Kutcher now divides his time between acting and smart investing — in companies like Airbnb, Spotify, and Foursquare.

"The sexiest thing in the entire world is being really smart," Kutcher said at last year's Teen Choice Awards.

Cindy Crawford studied chemical engineering on scholarship at Northwestern University.

Cindy Crawford, who graduated as the valedictorian of her high school class, signed her first modeling contract in 1984. Initially she used the money to supplement her scholarship to attend Northwestern University, but she ditched school to launch her career.

By 1985, she appeared in the pages of Vogue, and would go on to become one of the original Big Six supermodels.

cruel intentions going to tv

All the answers we craved after watching the 1999 movie "Cruel Intentions" will be answered in a TV series based on the movie that's in the works at NBC.

Business Insider's sources confirm that NBC has ordered a script for the show, which carries a penalty for the network if it decides not to go forward with the project.

The original "Cruel Intentions" followed rich and popular step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillipe) as they toy with the daughter of the new headmaster, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). Selma Blair also starred.

According to Deadline, which broke the news, the new series will follow 16-year-old Bash Casey, son of the late Sebastian Valmont (played by Ryan Phillippe) and Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). He'll discover his father's journal and learn of the riches he left behind for love. In search of answers, Casey will move from Kansas to San Francisco for a scholarship at the prestigious Brighton Preparatory Academy. While there, he'll get thrust into a world of luxury, lust, and corruption.

The film’s writer-director Roger Kumble and producer Neal H. Moritz will return. Additionally, the team behind the musical staging of "Cruel Intentions" in Los Angeles – Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross – are onboard, as well.

"Cruel Intentions" recieved mixed reviews from critics, audiences loved it. The $10.5 million movie ended up making nearly $76 million worldwide.

YouTube finally unveiled its ad-free subscription video service on Tuesday: It's called 'YouTube Red.'

YouTube Red costs $9.99 per month for desktop, Android, and $12.99 per month on iOS, and will also be available offline with a handy "save" feature. Eventually, YouTube plans to launch exclusive content on YouTube Red that you wont' be able to see on the traditional YouTube site.

The push for original content includes new original shows with popular YouTube stars including PewDiePie, Joey Graceffa, Toby Turner, and MatPat, among others. The original YouTube Red shows and movies will debut "early next year."

The subscription service will launch on October 28th, and you'll be able to try it for free thanks to the 30-day free trial.

YouTube's move to offer paid content comes as the world's largest video website faces competition from streaming video service Netflix, which has garnered TK million paying customers with popular original video series, and a msocial network Facebook

YouTube is paying its video partners the "vast, vast majority of revenue to our partners," Chief Business Office Robert Kyncl said, speaking to reporters from a livestream in LA.

He noted that the revenue will be pooled together and paid to content creators based on their amount of "watch time."

PewDiePie's new series will be called "ScarePewDiePie," and YouTube describes the show as "a reality-adventure series from the creator and executive producers of The Walking Dead" where viewers can "experience thrills, chills and laughter asPewDiePie encounters terrifying situations inspired by his favorite video games."

A YouTube Red membership is also good across Gmail, YouTube's Music app, and YouTube's Twitch competitor, YouTube Gaming, ensuring that you'll receive the same ad-free experience across all platforms.

Google takes on Spotify and Apple Music with new YouTube Music app

YouTube unveiled its new music app, "YouTube Music," on Tuesday at an event in Los Angeles.

Designed for people who use YouTube as a main source of music, the new music streaming app works closely with traditional YouTube videos, allowing users to switch to an "audio only" version and stream music in the background while they access other apps.

YouTube Music will be free to use, but the free version includes ads, which you can remove by signing in with a YouTube Red membership (more on that below).

The app features a strong emphasis on music discovery, so once you select a song it will begin a playlist of related songs, which sounds like it will be great for those who don't want to craft their own playlists. You can tap a "love" button on any song to influence the following songs in the queue, similar to Pandora.

YouTube Music is also integrated with YouTube's just-announced ad-free video subscription service, YouTube Red, which costs $9.99 per month on Android and desktop, or $12.99 for iOS. A YouTube Red membership extends across other YouTube services including YouTube Music, allowing subscribers to sign in once and enjoy an ad-free experience across YouTube Music, Google Play Music, and YouTube Gaming, its Twitch competitor.

If you use YouTube Music with a YouTube Red membership, you'll also be able to save music offline.

Here’s how the creepy haunted house in 'Crimson Peak' was created

Crimson Peak Legendary Pictures

Director Guillermo del Toro is known for creating movies filled with fantasy and horror, and the setting for his latest movie, “Crimson Peak,” is filled with a whole lot of both.

A run-down Gothic mansion in the English hills is the setting for most of the movie. Young Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) is brought there after marrying Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) who also lives with his sister, Lucille (Jessica Chastain).

However, after Edith gets to the Sharpe home, which is slowly sinking into the red clay it sits on, she finds that, along with living in a dilapidated home that has a giant hole in the roof and red clay seeping through the walls, there are creepy ghosts walking the halls.

crimson peak house

The Sharpe mansion isn’t the ideal place to live in, but for the audience it’s one of the best parts of the movie.

Thomas E. Sanders, who was the production designer on the film, said the inspiration for the look of the house came from Edward Hopper’s “The House by the Railroad,” which was also Alfred Hitchcock’s inspiration for the Bates house in “Psycho.”

“After talking to Guillermo I printed out a picture of it immediately and we kept it on the wall,” Sanders told Business Insider.

Sanders said that he and del Toro knew they wouldn’t find a real location that could match their vision, so Sanders was tasked with designing the interior of the house in a sound studio.

Crimson Peak 3 Kerry Hayes

"I knew we were going to be on stage for a good six weeks, and that’s a long time to be on one set," said Sanders. "You’re usually in fifteen to twenty sets during that length of time, so we needed to build a set that could hold up that long."

To do that Sanders created a 5x5 model of the entire interior of the house, which over eight weeks was tweaked to del Toro’s specifications.

“I would point to a part of the model and say, ‘Okay, Guillermo, if we stand here we’ll be able to see this and this,’” Sanders said. “So you could look with a lipstick cam and figure out if a wall would need to be moved so the camera could get in that spot. It’s kind of backwards from most designers, who would draw things out and then maybe make a model, but I like to change the model organically as we’re building it.”

Crimson Peak 2 Legendary Picture

With a three-dimensional blueprint to work from, the set was then built, which included all three levels of the house, tubes built into the walls for when the red clay needed to seep through, and a working elevator that’s used prominently in the film.

According to Sanders, very few computer graphics were used. The one exception is the ceiling of the house and its giant hole, where light shines down onto the foyer.

For Sanders, the experience on “Crimson Peak” is hard to find. The last time he worked on a movie with this many practical effects was with Francis Ford Coppola on “Dracula” in 1992.

dracula

He gives all of the credit to del Toro for making it possible.

“It’s because the director, me, and the DP, all of us, were on the same page and were able to push it in that direction,” he said. “It’s rare to have that on a movie, with everyone on the same page.”

“Crimson Peak” is now playing in theaters.

mythbusters canceled

Discovery has canceled one of its longest-running shows. "MythBusters" is set to end after its upcoming 14th season.

While this may be a surprise for fans, stars Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman had known about the impending goodbye for about a year already. They have been secretly plotting how to make the final season amazing.

"It was my greatest fear that 'MythBusters' would just stop and we wouldn't be able to do proper final episodes," Savage told Entertainment Weekly. "So whether it's myths about human behavior or car stories or explosion stories, we tried to find the most awesome example of each category and build on our past history."

Savage and Hyneman are expected to do one last MythBusters Live tour, which starts next month.

"MythBusters" put urban myths, old wives' tales, common beliefs, and superstitions to the test.

Previously, Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara served as hosts, as well. They were cut last season as the show's ratings began to fall.

Business Insider reached out to Discovery for comment.

YouTube's new subscription service has one big weapon against Netflix (GOOG, NFLX)

$
0
0

pewdiepie gamingOn Wednesday, YouTube announced an ad-free subscription service that will cost $9.99 a month for desktop and Android — though Apple gets a bit of a poke with a $12.99 price tag for iOS.

The service will be called "YouTube Red," and an ad-less YouTube wonderland isn’t the only thing subscribers will get.

They will also, “early next year,” get original content from YouTube stars like PewDiePie, Joey Graceffa, Toby Turner, and MatPat.

Content will range from shorter videos to video series and films.

While YouTube Red is being described by some as a Netflix or Hulu killer, the focus of YouTube’s premium content actually seems at first glance to be fundamentally different from that on existing streaming giants.

Let’s look at one show that was explained in some detail on Wednesday, and stars PewDiePie, perhaps the most iconic star in YouTube history. PewDiePie's new series will be called "Scare PewDiePie,” and YouTube is advertising the show as "a reality-adventure series from the creator and executive producers of The Walking Dead" where viewers can "experience thrills, chills and laughter as PewDiePie encounters terrifying situations inspired by his favorite video games."

The emphasis on reality is important here.

One of YouTube’s main strengths is its “personalities,” the kind of superstars who can anchor a reality TV show just by being a stylized version of themselves. And while these kinds of stars are prevalent on network television, they are all but nonexistent in Netflix’s original content.

Netflix has comedy specials and has an upcoming talk show starring comedian Chelsea Handler. But reality TV is hardly its game. It's no secret that Netflix sees HBO as a role model and sparring partner, and YouTube’s emphasis on personalities isn’t in HBO’s DNA.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has always characterized “linear TV” as his company’s rival, not other streaming services like Hulu. He seems to think there is room enough in the market for different niches of video streaming services. YouTube Red is a step toward this vision of the future.

The question will be whether there comes a time when customers start getting tired of playing X dollars for Netflix, Y dollars for Hulu, Z dollars for YouTube, and on and on.

But right now, YouTube has one weapon that guarantees it will make content that can provide something Netflix can’t, or isn’t interested in, delivering: personalities.

The guy behind horror hits 'The Purge' and 'Paranormal Activity' has a new scary game show that's set in an abandoned slaughterhouse

hellevator soska twins gsn

Jason Blum, the producer of low budget scary movies "The Purge," "Paranormal Activity," and "Insidious" is bringing his brand of scary to new GSN game show "Hellevator" — but not the "low budget" part.

Jason Blum_JPG"I can definitely tell you it was not in the micro-budget, typical Blumhouse category," Blum told Business Insider. "It was a much more traditionally budgeted show. You could say it was a very healthy budget, and it was a far cry from the typical Blumhouse budget."

Hosted by "The Twisted Twins" Jen and Sylvia Soska, "Hellevator" takes place in an abandoned slaughterhouse. It tasks a three-person team to face one of the most frightening scenarios they could imagine and then leave the relative "safety" of the hellevator to perform timed challenges for money. If a person doesn’t make it back in time, the elevator moves on without them. Up to $50,000 are up for grabs if the team can complete the challenges and beat The Labyrinth – a terrifying mad-dash race to accumulate more money.

"It was very different," Blum explained. "We had more resources than we’re used to working with and that was fun. I wanted to make sure our first foray into the game show delivered in every way possible, and also, we were learning about it in a real way."

Most of the money went into the game show's intricate set design while a big chunk of it would also go to the location.

"It was a pretty big location," said Blum. "We were taking up a lot of space because we had the whole building. It was a building in downtown LA, and then the construction and set design are elaborate and elaborate equals not cheap."

Fans of the horror movie impresario may think a game show is a strange fit for Blum. But the producer has been a longtime fan of the genre.

hellevator contestant gsn"When I was a kid, I really loved game shows," the 46-year-old producer said. "For whatever reason, I was fascinated with them and watched them a ton... I do want to grow our company, so the way I’ve been doing that is moving scary to different things."

Blum's production company, Blumhouse, has gotten into the business of haunted houses, online content sites blumhouse.com and Crypt TV, and now TV game shows.

"I thought it would be a really fun thing to do a scary game show," Blum said.

"Hellevator" premieres on Wednesday, October 21 at 8 p.m. on GSN.

How to watch tonight's stunning meteor shower created by Halley's Comet

$

orionids

The Orionids meteor shower, which is generated by the famous Halley's Comet, is happening this week.

Halley's Comet is only visible from Earth once every 75 years, but residual chunks from its tail generate two annual meteor showers: the Eta Aquarids in May and the Orionids in October.

Meteor showers typically come from the dusty, rocky guts that comets leave behind as they fly through the solar system.

When Earth passes through a comet's tail, its gravitational pull attracts their debris, which then enters the atmosphere, burns up, and is seen as a falling star or meteor.

Tonight's Orionid meteor shower is your last chance of the year to catch a glimpse of this famous comet's guts as they rain down through Earth's atmosphere.

If you can't check it out in person, you can always watch the live webcast from the online observatory, Slooh, which will begin at 8 pm ET on Wednesday Oct. 21. We've included the webcast at the end of this post, or you can go to Slooh.com and check it out as well as their library of broadcasts on past cosmic events like solar eclipses, lunar eclipses, and much more.

How to watch this week's meteor shower

The best time to see the Orionids this year, which is when the most meteors will be streaking across the sky, will be in the early morning hours — right before dawn — on Thursday, Oct. 22, according to EarthSky.org.

This year's shower is expected to give a pretty good show, offering about 20 meteors an hour at its peak.

You can find out the exact time dawn will approach in your area by checking out Gaisma.com. For New York City, it will be 6:46 am Thursday morning, so New Yorkers should get a decent show within the hour before that — as long as the weather holds up.

Here's a map from AccuWeather.com showing what the weather will be like across the country for Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning:

650x366_10191503_page

How to spot an Orionid meteor

Each meteor shower is named for the constellation from which they seem to appear. The Orionids, for example, are named for the constellation Orion.

Luckily for amateur star gazers, Orion is one of the easiest constellations to pick out in the night sky. A sure way to spot it is to look for what is called Orion's Belt, which is made of three bright stars in a straight line, identified in the image below.

We used the free planetarium app Stellarium to figure out where in New York's night sky the constellation will be at around 5:45 am on Thursday, Oct. 22, but you can customize Stellarium to fit your specific location. Orion will be relatively high above the horizon in the southward direction of the sky, as shown below:

orionidsIn order to spot just about any meteor shower, you need to get to a dark place, far from city lights. Sometimes the moon's light can be a nuisance, but not this year.

Although the moon's phase right now is a waxing crescent — meaning it is growing brighter every night — it will have set long before the Orionids peak during the pre-dawn hours. That means you'll have a better show than you otherwise might.

No special viewing equipment is needed. Just lay down on your back, look up, and enjoy the show. And if it looks like clouds are going to roll in, don't forget to check out the shower online.

Slooh's live broadcast of the meteor shower starts at 8 p.m. ET on Oct. 21.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) busted out his own impersonation of Larry David on Wednesday night.

In a widely heralded "Saturday Night Live" skit last weekend, David played the role of Sanders during the first Democratic presidential debate.

Sanders was asked about that skit on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and used one of David's most famous catchphrases from his show, "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

"Well," Sanders began, pausing for effect. "I thought it was preeetty, preeetty, preeetty good."

sean connery james bondBond songs have become a cultural phenomenon in themselves.

A lengthy intro complete with an epic song is as much a part of the Bond formula as girls, cars, and martinis. Bond songs range from serious to campy, but they are always intensely dramatic — and catchy.

The newest Bond film, "Spectre," will premiere on November 6th. But the film already has a hit Bond song, Sam Smith’s recently released “Writings on the Wall.” Smith joins artists like Louis Armstrong, Madonna, Paul McCartney, and Adele in the annals of Bond history.

To celebrate the release of the film, data analysts at Spotify looked through their user data to surface the top Bond songs. Some are, as you’d expect, the newest ones: by Sam Smith and Adele. But there are some oldies that also have an enduring popularity on the streaming service.

Here are the 10 most popular Bond songs on Spotify:

  1. Writing's on the Wall - Sam Smith (Spectre, 2015)
  2. Skyfall - Adele (Skyfall, 2012)
  3. Live And Let Die - Paul McCartney & Wings (Live And Let Die, 1973)
  4. You Know My Name - Chris Cornell (Casino Royale, 2006)
  5. A View To A Kill - Duran Duran (A View To A Kill, 1985)
  6. Another Way To Die - Jack White & Alicia Keys (Quantum Of Solace, 2008)
  7. Die Another Day - Madonna (Die Another Day, 2002)
  8. James Bond Theme - John Barry & Orchestra (Dr. No, 1962)
  9. Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey (Goldfinger, 1964)
  10. Nobody Does It Better - Carly Simon (The Spy Who Loved Me, 1977)

Meet Julia! She has orange hair and green eyes. She's also autistic.

Sesame Street Workshop introduced the new character this week as part of its new online site – SesameStreet.org/Autism – dedicated to autism.

In an effort to de-stigmatize the disorder, the online site provides resources to families, teachers and caregivers around the country to educate them about autism, and tools to help families touched by autism with everyday activities.

Part of those resources will include Julia. She's in preschool and does things a little differently when playing with her friends.

The autism initiative was the culmination of more than two years of study, according to a press release.

“Sesame Workshop is uniquely positioned to play a meaningful role in increasing peoples’ understanding about autism,” said Sesame Workshop's Executive Vice President of Global Impact and Philanthropy, Sherrie Westin, in statement.

She continued, “This project is an extension of the belief we’ve always promoted: ‘We are all different, but all the same.’  I am passionate about this initiative, and am so proud of the partnerships with the autism community that have led to this.”

The site also has an iPad app, offers digital and printed story books, and tips for parents, among many other tools.
