10 things you should never do at a concert

Live concerts are pretty much the best things ever. Getting to hear a band you love lay it all on the line as you drink beer and enjoy your friends’ company is about as good as it gets.

An epic performance takes root deep in your soul, staying with you for months or years or decades afterward. (I can still feel Zak Starkey’s bass drum thump in my chest cavity as he pounded out the epic solo on “Won’t Get Fooled Again” while playing with The Who in Nashville, Tennessee.)

Every great show I've been to has two things in common. First, a great band I love dearly playing at the peak of their powers (or very near the peak of their powers for some of the more aged groups). And second, a veritable plethora of jackasses trying their darnedest to ruin the concert experience for everyone in close proximity to them.

No one wants to be “that guy” (or girl), regardless of the context. To ensure you don’t suffer that fate — or more accurately, to ensure no one else has to suffer you — here are 10 behaviors to avoid at your next concert.

1. Taking incessant pictures

I get it. You’re at an awesome show, and you want to remember it forever. I can’t blame you there. Lord knows I’ve been guilty of snapping a photo or two to prove to myself that just happened. But you know what literally everyone who cares about the music hates? Your hand high to the sky blocking their view of the band as you snap 100 photos you’ll never look at again (except for that one you’ll post on Instagram, to prove to other people you’re cool). Take a picture. Hell, take 10. But once you’ve snapped a few early in the show, give it a rest.

2. Taking incessant video

concert crowd

You know what’s worse than snapping pictures constantly? Recording video. If it’s a good show and the band is blasting away at 125 decibels, you know what can’t capture the sound at all? Your iPhone microphone. Most shows are dark with bright stage lights and spotlights. You know what struggles to capture video in low light situations with stark contrasts? Your iPhone camera. The last thing I want to see from the crowd is an army of phones held up in the air and staying there because not only are you taking photos, you’re recording video. And to top it all off, you know what people look at even less than concert photos? Concert video.

When I was young and didn’t know any better, I recorded a few videos at concerts. I have since apologized to the Gods of Rock and made my amends. But all these years later, I can honestly say I’ve never looked at those videos again.

3. Not watching the show

Another thing I can’t stand at shows is a pack of people looking down at their phones while the band is giving it all they have. If you’re at a show, be at the show. It bothers the crap out of me when people are watching a movie or a TV show and they’re on their phone the entire time. What’s the purpose of watching anything if you’re not really paying attention? Well, if you’re taking up space in a concert venue that could have gone to another, more attentive fan, you’re being a jerk. If you’re texting a friend trying to meet up at the show, fine. But if you’re taking selfies and checking insta and posting to Facebook, go to the bathroom or to the bar. Remove yourself from the crowd because you’re not really there anyway.

4. Yelling things at the band

At big shows, this is less of an issue. In a 25,000 person arena, the band can’t hear you anyway, so it doesn’t matter all that much beyond your rock karma. But if you’re in a more intimate room and the band can hear you? Don’t yell at them. Just don’t do it.

“I just hate it when people yell out little prepared sentences at shows,” David Ponder, lead guitarist for rock band Somebody’s Darling said. “The little joke you thought up is lame. Always.”

This most certainly includes yelling “Freebird” at the show. Unless you’re at a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band concert, you’re either being a redneck, or trying to be funny and failing. By all means, cheer your ass off for the band, but don’t yell things at them. It’s not funny, and the band is tired of your lame schtick.

5. Requesting songs

This follows closely with not screaming things at the band. Don't yell requests unless the band specifically asks, “What do you guys wanna hear?” The band has a set list, and they’re going to play what they want to. They’re balancing what fans want to hear (the hits) versus what they want to play as artists. That’s their job. They very well might play the song you want to hear, but they’re saving it for a particular part of the concert. Bands put a lot of thought and effort into the mood and flow of a concert vis-a-vis their set list, so don’t be that jerk yelling for the same song the entire show.

6. Singing

You know something I’ve never said at a concert? “Man, I’m so glad this guy in front of me came to the show. He’s a much better singer than [insert band’s lead singer here]. Thank God he’s belting out all the tunes so loudly next to me!”

At big shows, the speakers are probably so loud no one else can hear you. This becomes less of an issue in that case. But if there’s any chance others can hear your atonal groanings as you attempt and fail to approximate the singer on stage, keep your loud noises to cheering only. No one came to hear you sing. There’s a reason the lead singer gets paid to produce music with his/her voice and you do not. Remember that.

7. Shoving to the front

concert

If you have to make uncomfortable contact with another person in order to get to the front, you should just stay put. If you want to be closer to the band, get to the venue early. If I’m standing in the fifth or sixth row and have been there for an hour or more, and you just roll up, shove through me, and then stand directly in my personal bubble right in my eyeline, you’re the absolute worst.

Also, try hard not to go to the bathroom over and over again throughout the show. Even though you got there early enough to get a good spot near the front, pushing through people constantly as you go to and from the bathroom repeatedly is really annoying. You’re not the worst, but it’s suboptimal for those around you.

8. Being the only person doing what you're doing

At huge rock shows, expect to stand pretty much the whole time. But at intermediate to smaller-size shows, especially in older venues that have dedicated seating, it can be difficult to gauge whether or not you ought to stand or sit. If you love to stand during a show, you can try to set the precedent of standing in your section, but if you’re the only person doing that, it’s pretty obnoxious. This becomes a much bigger problem at shows where the audience might be split between young adults and older, original fans (think: The Eagles). In those cases, take your cues from what other people are doing in your section. Don’t be the only person doing what you’re doing.

9. Getting obnoxiously drunk

girl drinking

I’m a firm proponent of drinking at concerts. It’s a major component of how venues make money, which keep bands in business. Also, a great beer or cocktail plus your favorite band’s show makes for a perfect match — within reason.

No one likes to take care of someone else because they’re too drunk to function on their own. It only goes downhill from there if you’re ruining everyone’s night by making an ass of yourself in the middle of the audience. I’ve seen hammered guys throw up on the back of people’s heads at shows; I’ve seen girls start fights with one another; I’ve seen people nose dive and take multiple people to the ground with them, all because the perpetrator was smashed.

Have a drink. Have three. Don’t get completely wasted.

10. Making out

Hold hands, put your arms around one another, enjoy each other’s company as you take in the awesome performance — but do not make out. Literally no one wants to see it. PDA make-out-sessions almost always look like two seals fighting over a grape. You look ridiculous, and it’s gross. Just don’t do it.

Concerts can be the most fun events you’ll attend all year. Great ones can live on in your heart and soul for decades to come. But, for every amazing concert I’ve been to, I’ve had another ruined by audience members doing some combination of the above 10 things. Don’t do them, and let your next concert be that much better for their absence.

Bill Nye the Science Guy is back for round two of using emojis to explain scientific concepts. The first time, he covered evolution, complete with his own bow-tie-wearing emoji doppelganger.

Screen Shot 2015 09 14 at 12.56.10 PM

This time, Nye joins Mashable's "The Watercooler" series to talk about how the Internet has grown from just a means of connecting academic institutions to a massive system linking practically everything around us.

Sep 14, 2015 14:41

Soon enough, everything from our watch to our furnace will one day soon (if it isn't already) be hooked up to the Internet, The Science Guy illustrates with corresponding emojis.

That includes jet engines on airplanes — not a particularly thrilling thought for those concerned with potential hacks that could bring an airplane to the ground.

"The future is for those who can think differently about how everything is connected," Nye says before rather goofily exclaiming that those people will be the ones to change the world.

The video is part of GE's "Emoji Science" project, which combines DIY science projects and videos with lots and lots of emojis.

CITI: It might be time for SeaWorld to sell its park in Orlando (SEAS)

seaworld orlando mist fog

SeaWorld's business has been taking it on the chin lately, and one analyst says it may be time for the company to consider cutting bait and ditch its Orlando location.

According to Jason Bazinet at Citi, the struggling amusement park brand is getting outmaneuvered by its competitors in the Florida market, and there may be solid benefits to selling the land and its east coast park.

SeaWorld's rough couple of years started with the CNN documentary Blackfish, and recently got even worse after boy-band One Direction's Harry Styles called for fans to boycott the park, prompting a massive amount of negative consumer sentiment.

The negative PR has led to decreasing attendance and revenue for the company, and Bazinet says that is focused primarily in two of the company's 13 locations.

"Interestingly, the lions’ share of this decline occurred at just two parks: SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego," he wrote in a note to clients. "These two parks represented about 85% of the attendance declines across the firm’s 11 theme parks. Yet, in 2008 these two parks made up only 45% of SeaWorld’s aggregate visitors."

According to Bazinet, SeaWorld has been losing visitors to Universal Orlando. Furthermore, the negative sentiment from Blackfish has been particularly robust in Florida.

This led Bazinet to a radical, and admittedly unlikely, possibility: SeaWorld should sell their Orlando park.

Both Disney and Comcast, owners of the Universal theme parks, have made or are planning expansions to their theme park operations. Bazinet said SeaWorld could possibly sell to either of the two.

The Florida location made the most sense, said Bazinet, because SeaWorld owns the land instead of leasing it like in San Diego and it has experienced the greatest attendance declines. Selling the land would generate $500 million in after-tax value, according to his analysis, against a loss of $25 million in free cash flow.

This would also mitigate the attendance loss percentages. "Without the 407,000 decrease in attendance from SeaWorld Orlando, total attendance would have decreased 2.5% instead of 4.3%," said Bazinet. "Simply selling Orlando gives SeaWorld a comparable 2014 attendance decline as Six Flags (-2% attendance)."

Finally, Bazinet calculates that the revenue generated would go to share buybacks and paying down debt, which would raise the company's share price $6, from around $18 currently to $24, and its free cash flow multiple would jump from 10.5x to 12x.

Bazinet admits this is a nuclear option, but if such substantial attendance losses continue, all options have to be explored.

Even Hollywood can't find people to work (DIS)

RTR4M7SL (1)

Does America need more screenwriters?

Walk into a Starbucks on any given afternoon and odds are you'll see one to ten freelancers and dreamers writing scripts on their shiny laptops.

You'd probably sigh — frustrated that there's no room to sit — and silently curse the horde of nobodies aspiring to be somebodies.

But if you'd think that there are too many people aspiring to be in show business, you'd dead wrong.

The fact is: there actually aren't enough people working in the entertainment business right now.

In a recent note to clients, Citi's Tobias Levkovich noted that job openings in the US economy are looking "respectable," and that a number of sectors, including Hollywood, are even actually having a hard time filling jobs:

"[W]orker shortages are showing up in a number of industries including home building, trucking, welding, code programming and even recently in Hollywood as The Hollywood Reporter noted in a September 2nd article that studios are having trouble finding screenwriters, producers, directors and film crews to handle more than 400 scripted shows."

In fact, Executives and agents told The Hollywood Reporter that there are so many scripted original shows in production for broadcast, cable, and streaming outlets that are all fighting for talent.

"There's not enough people, and networks don't have the patience," a high-level studio exec told THR.

Notably, returning back to Levkovich, he also wrote that at the same time that industries are reporting worker shortages, wage pressures appear to be growing.

"Given this backdrop, a zero interest rate policy no longer seems appropriate," he argues.

The Craigslist 'Missed Connections' for Burning Man are just as absurd as you thought they'd be

Burning Man

The legendary 'Missed Connections' section on Craigslist is often an incredible mixture of absurdity, heartfelt longing, and wistfulness. And this is doubly true of those from Buring Man, the yearly festival in the middle of the desert whose very nature invites an intense nostalgia that keeps people coming back year after year.

And the missed connections this year do not disappoint. There are people who were given a piece of someone's hair, only to be left in the desert dust alone, and those who had an amazing connection until someone said something about vaping in a van and their potential lover left.

"You were crying under a crocodile..."

Read on for this year's amazing Burning Man missed connections:

Note: If you've never read a "Missed Connections" post before, Craigslist users often use tags like 'm4w' (man looking for woman') to alert people to their own gender and the gender of the person they're looking for. Please also note some of the listings contain obscenities.

"This is a longshot but you were so beautiful and free and when you got on the bus I was like wow and you really stood out I smiled at you and thought you were gorgeous and you looked at me and then someone said something about vaping in a van and you bailed but please if this is you give me a shot."

'Twelve from Burning Man - w4m'

"I know this is a total longshot but we hung out Friday night after meeting at a camp "bar" A huge group of guys followed me around the playa calling me Queen until it was late and just the three of us. I named you Twelve. I guess I passed out and woke up confused then ran away. I wish I had stayed and spent the rest of the burn with you.

I wish I could remember where you were from. Hopefully that wasn't the last time I will see you.

Also if you are Twelve give me some background details so I know it's really you."

'Crying under a crocodile at burning man. Mark, aka Fruit Salad , - w4m'

"You were crying under a crocodile. I was with a couple friends who noticed. You had a purple (was it blue?) faux-hawk. We descended upon you and embraced and comforted you. We ended up back at your camp in a delirious state of sleep deprivation and substance come-down. You made us bacon and eggs and we lay down for a nap that became a bit of a sticky triangle. My friend, being the more agressive of the two of us, rose to claim you. But I felt our connection (perhaps it was only in my head?). When we parted you had invited us both back (seperately) and I told you I couldn't come back without telling my friend. But I felt desperate to find you again. As we rode off, I told my friend that I really wanted to go back to see you. She pointed out that she saw you first (that she had actually met you at a festival previously) and that meant she had dibs. (I don't believe in dibs, I believe in fate and cosmic convergence). She then lectured me about not letting dudes get between our friendship and that there were plenty of men on the playa. True, but the fact was, whatever happened in our brief interaction affected me. It was the most magnetic connection I had experienced on the playa. I try to make this make sense to her but she insisted I let it go. So, as the honest and true friend I am, I let you go. But I thought about you and hoped for a serendipitous meeting on the playa.

Two days later, when I saw my friend again, I asked her if she had gone back to see you. She said she had, and sort of passed it off like it was no big deal. Then she very casually said, you can go see him if you want, I don't care. WTF!

I had to find you. I went back to your neighborhood but couldn't remember exactly where. (8:45 and g-h?). I rode up and down your streets searching. I did this everyday. Still, I could not find you. Must not have been meant to be. Also, I know how it is out there. When we met, that was all the feelings and connections of that moment, and the moment changes along with those emotions. I'm accepting of this.

And I just wanted to tell you I'm still thinking of you. You somehow impacted me.

Are you out there? I remember you saying you lived in Oakland. I remember your playa name being fruit salad. I remember your hands, and all your bracelets, I remember your brown eyes, with their tears and their intensity. These are the only details I can recall to help me find you.

Perhaps you'll see this. Perhaps an aquaintence will. If not, this is my closure. At least I tried. Farewell my beautiful connection."

A new 'Game of Thrones' cast member sheds light on what will happen to Arya Stark on Season 6

kevin eldon game of thrones season 6Note: Spoiler alert!

The latest addition to HBO's "Game of Thrones" is British comic actor Kevin Eldon, an HBO representative told Business Insider.

"Game of Thrones" has been ramping up castings for a comedy troupe on Season 6. And according to Watchers on the Wall, Eldon will play the lead actor in the troupe. Here's the description of the role from the site:

Leading Theatre Character Actor. The leading actor in a theatrical company, around 50 years old. He participates in a play using a pronounced Northern accent, and we see him behind the scenes in seedy touring dressing rooms.  He’s a flamboyant caricaturist. He appears in three episodes and he also films this week in Spain and again around November 6th in N. Ireland.

He will play a character based on Ned Stark in the play inside a TV show. Below, there's Eldon dressed as Ned in the back with newly cast Essie Davis and Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark.

According to IMDB, Eldon has appeared in the movies "Hugo," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and "Hot Fuzz." His TV credits include "The Matt Hatter Chronicles," "Death Comes to Pemberley," and his own comedy show called "It's Kevin."

As BI reported previously, Davis will play a character based on Cersei Lannister. And while Richard E. Grant's role was unknown at the time BI reported it, Watchers on the Wall identified that Grant's role is that of an actor and the manager of the theater group. Here's the description of the role:

Grand Theatre Actor/Manager (55 – 70) The larger-than-life leader of a troupe of actors. He specializes in portraying drunken aristocrats. He is a huge presence on stage and rather nasty to his company when off-stage. They’re searching for a character actor with great comedy skills. He appears in three episodes, and is shooting this week in Spain, and the week of November 6th in Northern Ireland.

Apparently, all of this information points to the upcoming sixth book of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice" novels in which Arya lies low with a traveling comedy troupe.

The comedy troupe story line is currently shooting in Girona, Spain. "Game of Thrones" Season 6 is expected to premiere on HBO in Spring 2016.

Danerys Targaryen Game of Thrones Khaleesi season five

Warning: Do not read ahead if you want to avoid spoilers for "Game of Thrones," as well as speculation about upcoming plot lines.

"Game of Thrones" fans were left on the edge of their seats in June, when the fifth season of HBO's smash hit came to a close on a giant cliffhanger finale.

Filming for next season started almost immediately, and with the set location reveals, new casting calls, and analyses of the book series, fans already have a pretty good idea of what's to come.

We've sifted through all the rumors and speculation to find the plot lines that are most likely to come to fruition. Scroll down to see what's in store for season six of "Game of Thrones."

Fans are excited to see the return of some characters that were noticeably absent during season five — notably Bran Stark and his companion, Hodor.

Isaac Hempstead Wright, the young actor who plays Bran, confirmed that he will be back this season.

"It’s going to get particularly interesting with Bran," Wright told Entertainment Weekly. "He has some interesting visions."

As EW noted, "Game of Thrones" showrunner David Benioff indicated that by the time we see Bran in the upcoming season, he will have already been training with the mysterious "Three-Eyed Raven" he was last seen with.

Benioff once made a comparison between Bran Stark and Luke Skywalker to explain his absence in season five.

"It would be far less interesting, after 'The Empire Strikes Back' to have an hour-long movie in between 'Empire' and 'Return of the Jedi' where Luke is training," Benioff said. "It's so much cooler to cut from [the] end of 'Empire' to [the] beginning of 'Return,' where he's become the Jedi."

We'll get to see Bran's new abilities, as well as more of his powerful teacher, the Three-Eyed Raven.

Bran is the only active warg currently on the show, which means he has an advanced ability to enter the minds of animals and humans around him. We learned in season four that he is also a "greenseer," someone who can see into the past and future through cryptic visions.

Bran is coming back, along with his new mentor the Three-Eyed Raven. Casting announcements were recently made, when Variety confirmed that "Max von Sydow will take over the role, which was originated by Struan Rodger in the season four finale of the HBO drama."

Book readers have speculated Bran will play a big part in the coming war against the Others — the supernatural ice humanoids also known as White Walkers — with his talents, and this will likely be unveiled in the coming episodes.

Bran isn't the only Stark who may return to the screen. Rickon may return, too.

Rickon, the often forgotten Stark, is rumored to return in season six. In case you can't remember who Rickon is, he's the youngest Stark child, who named his direwolf Shaggydog.

In the show and books, Rickon hasn't done much. Like his brother Bran, we last saw him in season four. Rickon split from Bran and Hodor and took a different path with Osha, the Wildling woman who's now in the service of House Stark. Their plan was to try and get to the Last Hearth, a castle that belonged to a family who had sworn fealty to the Starks.

There has been no word of them since.

But actors Art Parkinson and Natalia Tena, who play Rickon and Osha, respectively, have recently been sighted in Belfast, Northern Ireland, a known filming location for "Game of Thrones" scenes that take place in northern Westeros.

In the book series, it's not clear where Rickon and Osha have been. The last they were mentioned, a loyal Stark follower met Davos Seaworth, Stannis' right-hand man, and asked him to find Rickon.

One reader has theorized, based on context clues of the book scene, that Rickon might be hanging out on an island called Skagos, a remote settlement, home to a supposedly cannibal race of men.

Now that is the type of drama season six would be remiss to leave out. With the actors' reappearance in Belfast, there's a chance the world will finally know what Rickon has been up to all this time.

One Republican presidential candidate was cool enough to once get a shout-out on 'The Wire '

Ben Carson Stuck on You

Retired neurosurgeon and current Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has continued to rise in the polls as he attempts to sell his political vision through the lens of his own inspirational life story

Indeed, Carson's story is so powerful it once landed the doctor a shout-out on David Simon's critically-acclaimed Baltimore crime drama, "The Wire."

In an episode during the fourth season — focused primarily on how the effects of the drug war rippled into the education system — several kids who were flagged as potential future dropouts were pulled out of middle school and thrown into an experimental learning course.

One of the first activities the instructor asked the students to do was discuss potential future careers. Though the majority said they wanted to be professional basketball players, one said he wanted to be a pediatric neurosurgeon, making a reference to a famous black neurosurgeon.

"Dr. Ben Carson," an instructor says in the episode.

"Yeah, that dude," the student replied.

Carson has notable stature in Baltimore, where he lived for decades and served as the youngest head of pediatric surgery at Johns Hopkins.

The retired neurosurgeon became well-known in the medical world for completing the first successful surgery to separate Siamese twins.

The feat helped him score mentions in popular culture. Cuba Gooding Jr. played Carson in a made-for-television movie about the surgeon's life, and he scored a cameo appearance as the surgeon who separates Matt Damon and Jeff Daniels in the comedy "Stuck On You."

Caron's political breakthrough came during a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in 2013, during which he publicly criticized President Obama's healthcare plan while the president sat only several feet away.

Carson actually isn't the only 2016 presidential candidate depicted in "The Wire."

Simon famously based the character of Tommy Carcetti — the idealistic local politician who slowly abandons some of his principles as he runs into the limits of his office — on former Baltimore mayor and Gov. Martin O'Malley (D), who is running for president on the Democratic side.

Caitlyn Jenner just gave her living room and bedroom a makeover, with a little help from New York-based interior designer Lori Margolis.

"Caitlyn always lived in beautiful houses, but designing them was Kris Jenner’s domain — Caitlyn wasn’t really involved," Margolis told Architectural Digest in an exclusive interview.

"This time, she really wanted to put her personal stamp on the house.”

And that's exactly what she did.

The space, which is the main shooting location for Jenner's E! show, "I am Cait," now sports a "distinctly California beachy vibe with a touch of Hollywood glamour," according to Architectural Design.

Jenner revealed the redesigned rooms during a recent episode of her show.

Her monochrome living room boasts a custom, 12-foot-long Homenature sofa — her favorite piece in the home. It fits both her 6-foot-2-inch stature and her large extended family.

The lounge chairs are also custom-tailored with Tibetan lamb's wool from Loft Thirteen for ultimate comfort.

The suite includes a massive walk-in closet and vanity station where Jenner does her hair and makeup.

According to Margolis, Jenner wanted her home to represent both her style and journey. "She wanted something soft and feminine, but also something that has strength."

Mission accomplished.

After seven seasons and more than 3,500 competitors, NBC's "American Ninja Warrior" named its first-ever winner on Tuesday.

Las Vegas resident Isaac Caldiero is the show's first champion, NBC announced via press release.

While Caldiero, 33, is the competition's first winner, he isn't the first person to beat the show's physically challenging four-stage course. That honor went to 36-year-old Baltimore Orioles cameraman, Geoff Britten.

Watch Geoff's run below:

But Caldiero ended up completing the course, as well, and beating Britten's time by only about five seconds. That earned him the show's $1 million prize.

Caldiero, a former restaurant busboy, had previously competed on the show's fifth season in 2013.

Watch Caldiero's path to Monday's win below:

Caldiero is an accomplished rock climber and conservationist, according to NBC.

The finals course consists of four stages and 23 total obstacles. The competitors must successfully complete all three stages before tackling the ultimate Stage 4 obstacle, Mt. Midoriyama, which stands at 8-stories tall with a 75-foot rope climb. Competitors have 30 seconds to scale the rope climb.

jon snow season 4 game of thrones

An interview with Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow on HBO's "Game of Thrones," may actually confirm what many fans have believed about the character for months: He will be returning.

According to the UK's Express, Harington interviewed with Belgium magazine, Humo, which asked how long he's under contract with "Game of Thrones."

"I can’t talk about that," Kit reportedly said. "Let’s just say that 'Game of Thrones' will remain a part of my life for a while, I’ll probably be in my thirties when it’s over."

If true, that would mean 28-year-old Harington would be on contract with the show for at least two years. And at the most, he'll be on contract for three more years through the show's last planned season, Season 8.

The question of whether Jon Snow survived the surprise ambush by his fellow Night Watchmen has been swirling since the show's fifth season finale. It has since been fed by sightings of the actor in Ireland where the show is shooting, among other things.

Even the statements from two HBO executives saying the character is dead hasn't stopped fans from believing Jon wll be back, since there's a possibility he could return in an undead state.

A BI reader did offer this possibile explanation:

A representative for Harington didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment. HBO told BI that it doesn't comment on actors' contracts.
