'Blood & Oil': The oil bust is about to go mainstream (USO, OIL)

Blood & Oil

The oil bust is going mainstream.

This fall, ABC will air a show titled "Blood and Oil," which follows a young couple who move to what ABC calls "The Bakken" in North Dakota in search of riches from the oil boom.

The Bakken is a real-life shale formation in North Dakota seen by many as the center of the shale-related oil boom seen in the US over the past several years.

shale bakken north america

The show, which we first heard about via Reuters energy expert John Kemp, comes at an interesting time for the industry. Energy production in the US boomed over the past several years amid the rise of fracking technology and a huge surge in oil prices, but it is now grappling with oil prices that are down about 60% from a year ago.

In an email on Tuesday, Kemp wrote: "How do you know the oil industry is turning from boom to bust? The first episodes of 'Dallas' were shown in 1978 as oil prices were climbing to their 1980 peak at $100 per barrel in real terms, but most of the series were aired in the 1980s, in time for the spectacular bust of the Texas oil industry."

According to a Deadline.com report from 2012, a show with the title "Boom" was picked up by USA Network, but it never aired. In January, however, Deadline.com reported that ABC had picked up the show, a move that came after oil prices crashed about 40% in the final quarter of 2014.

"Blood and Oil" will debut on Sunday, September 27.

Here's the collapse in oil prices over the past four years, which was apparently spectacular enough for a major network drama that will go up against the NFL during the fall.

JK Rowling just dropped a bomb on Harry Potter fans, revealing they've been saying Voldemort's name wrong for 15 years

The name "Voldemort" may be spelled with a T, but if you've been pronouncing it with one, you're in for a rude awakening.

J.K. Rowling, the author of the "Harry Potter" series, just set the record straight on Twitter. The name of the villain in her seven books should actually be pronounced "Vol-de-MOR," not "Vol-de-mort."

Yes, as if he's French. And yes, that means for the past 15 years and throughout all eight movies, "Harry Potter" fans, actors, and directors have been butchering Voldemort's name.

The revelation came from a North Carolina man, who tweeted the "Harry Potter" trivia fact on Wednesday:

Rowling then weighed in, and Mashable spotted it:

A promo for the new Tom Hardy movie hid a negative 2-star review in plain sight

Legend

It's rare for a movie studio to shine a light on a negative review while promoting a film, but for some reason, the international studio releasing the gangster pic "Legend" decided to sneak one onto a poster.

In a piece of promotional material for the coming movie, two faces are surrounded by four and five stars from numerous publications. The faces both belong to actor Tom Hardy, who plays the Kray brothers in the movie — identical twins who were the most notorious London gangsters of the 1960s.

But upon closer look, you'll notice a measly two stars from The Guardian hiding in plain sight between the two heads.

We'll give you a hand if you haven't caught it:

legend_promo_final1One person who definitely noticed the interesting "Legend" design choice was the critic who gave the negative review, The Guardian's Benjamin Lee.

He tweeted his discovery:

"Legend" is being released in the US by Universal (out Oct 2). The studio told BI that the international rights holder of the film, StudioCanal, is behind the material. (BI has reached out to the studio for comment.)

Occasionally studios will include blurbs by critics implying that the critics lauded a film as "a thrill ride" or "sensational" with wording taken out of context. But it takes a lot of creativity to place a low star rating in the promotion of a movie.

Believe the hype — Netflix's 'Beasts of No Nation' is incredible

Beasts of No Nation Idris Elba

The hype over Cary Fukunaga's latest project after wowing audiences with directing the complete first season of "True Detective" has been building since word came out that Netflix bought the film and vowed to give it a proper award season push.

Well, we've seen the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival and you should believe the hype.

"Beasts of No Nation" is an unforgiving adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala's novel written by Fukunaga that gives a vivid look inside a faction of the rebels who terrorize West Africa from the eyes of a young boy.

Abraham Attah, who plays the lead character, Agu, is a non-actor who was a street vendor in Ghana before Fukunaga cast him in the movie. The director has found a diamond in the rough, as Attah plays the role with such convincing reality you'd swear he had been in front of the camera for years prior.

beasts of no nationIn the film, Agu is claimed by the rebel's leader who goes by "Commandant" (Idris Elba) after troops kill Agu's father and older brother and he escapes their wrath. He's then brought into the world of the rebels, being taught the basic salutes and how to fight like the rest of the members. Then comes an initiation ritual that includes being beaten by the rebels, forced to lie in an open grave, and blessed by a shaman.

We then follow Agu as he and his fellow rebels (ranging from grown men to teenage kids his age) murder and pillage villages. In time Agu becomes the right-hand man of the Commandant.

Elba as the Commandant is a tour-de-force performance as he plays him with intimidation, compassion, and madness. But it's Attah who wows in the movie. This performance from a non-actor is remarkable.

Getty Images cary fukunagaThen there's Fukunaga's direction. (He's also the director of photography on the film). Having come up with creative visuals his whole career, the film is filled with thrilling crane, handheld, and long single shots.

But one striking visual happens during a gruesome attack on a village. All the leaves and foliage turn a shade of red, symbolizing the bloodbath going on. It's these tweaks to the shots' details that has made Fukunaga stand out among his contemporaries.

And there are also less horrific scenes. Like in the beginning of the movie before Agu loses his family. Just another kid in the neighborhood, he walks around with the outer casing of an old square television. Calling it "imagination TV," he tries to sell the set with its unique programming, which includes his friends on the set side of the TV acting out soap operas and Kung-Fu flicks. Fukunaga gets his camera tight on the set to make it look like we are really watching the kids inside an actual set.

The film, Fukunaga, Attah, and Elba all have very good chances of being nominated for Oscars and other year-end awards. But the bigger story will be before the Oscars come, as Netflix will be doing the unprecedented move of releasing the film simultaneously on their streaming service as well as select theaters (out October 16).

If the film finds the attention Netflix is expecting, the company will have changed how movies get released (as Amazon and others will follow suit).

But if  you can, see the movie in a theater. The visuals and sound mix should be enjoyed in a premium setting.

Elizabeth Olsen explains why singing badly on purpose for her new movie was 'freeing'

Elizabeth Olsen Todd Williamson Getty

In "I Saw the Light," which premiered Friday night at the Toronto International Film Festival, Elizabeth Olsen plays Audrey Mae Williams, the first wife of legendary country singer-songwriter Hank Williams.

Olsen's powerful performance portrays Audrey as someone who is strong-centered, but at a certain point, becomes fed-up with her famous husband's cheating and hard drinking. She ends up divorcing him. Williams (played by Tom Hiddleston) would die tragically at the age of 29.

But, like Hiddleston, who really sings the Williams songs in the movie, Olsen gets to show off her vocal skills, too — but in a different fashion.

Audrey aspires to be a country singer and performs duets with Williams at the gin joints Williams plays at during the early stages of his career.

When Audrey gets increasingly serious about her career and wants to sing with Williams at his radio gigs, things don't go so well. While belting out the songs in a high-pitched wail, even Williams can't defend his wife when she's finally told she can't continue to perform alongside her husband.

Olsen said singing badly on purpose was a lot of fun.

i saw the light sony pictures classics 2"It was very freeing," she told Business Insider. "[Tom] is trying to sound like someone so iconic, I'm trying to sound like someone who it's even hard to find sound clippings of."

Though Olsen managed to track down some recordings of Audrey singing, she was able to take liberties in how Audrey would sound.

The bigger challenge was making sure not to make Audrey sound too awful.

"In the movie when she sings in the household and in front of people you can enjoy listening to her, so we had to make sure a general person would think she's okay," Olsen told BI. "But when she starts singing for people that work in the industry and who have a musical ear, it had to be like, 'She's never going to be successful.' So that was the balance."

Olsen is no stranger to singing on screen. She did it in "Very Good Girls," an indie film in which she co-starred with Dakota Fanning, that was released last year.

But singing badly on purpose in "I Saw the Light" was more fun.

"There's so much humor in it," she said. "You need that in a film with a lot of sadness."

"I Saw the Light" opens in theaters November 27.

Why Elizabeth Olsen wouldn't feel comfortable starring in a stand-alone Scarlet Witch movie

Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch final

Elizabeth Olsen has quickly become a bigger name in Hollywood after taking on the role of Scarlet Witch in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," but the actress told Business Insider at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend that she's not looking to build the character into its own brand within Marvel Studios.

When asked if she would ever want to do a Scarlet Witch stand-alone movie the 26-year-old pondered for a second then replied:

"I'm not sure, honestly. I love my character, I just don't know how that would fit in the whole Marvel universe or if it would even be necessary."

Olsen is at TIFF for the premiere of her new film "I Saw The Light," where she plays Audrey Mae Williams, the first wife of legendary singer Hank Williams.

The film, in which her performance could garner her awards consideration later this year, was shot between "Ultron" and the next Marvel movie she's in, "Captain America: Civil War."

Olson feels its critical for her to spend the time between Marvel movies doing projects that aren't related to what she does for the billion-dollar franchise.

i saw the light sony pictures classics
"The good thing about Marvel is they have so many other things going on that they have to plan their year so specifically," she told Business Insider. "I already know my block of time for them for the next year, and I have a lot of time until then, so I'm in a position right now where I'm trying to find another film like 'I Saw The Light.'"

Having already completed her scenes for "Civil War" (in theaters May 6, 2016), Olsen said that Scarlet Witch in the movie is "still conflicted and confused" but that there's a progression in her character that she believes Marvel fans will enjoy.

The movie will focus on a rift in the Avengers that leads to members siding with either Captain America or Iron Man, and Olsen is that Scarlet Witch is being depicted as a "wild card" in the movie's marketing.

But back to that stand-alone Scarlet Witch movie. She would never consider it?

"The pressure of a tentpole movie on my shoulders doesn't feel comfortable," Olsen said with a laugh.

LG invented a crazy new double-sided TV (NFLX)

LG TV

Imagine a TV that allows you to get a full view of what's happening no matter where you are in the room — even if you're behind the television.

That's exactly what LG has invented, as it's just shown off a super slim double-sided OLED TV, according to multiple reports including this one from Mashable.

The TV comes in two sizes: a massive 111-inch version and a smaller 55-inch model. The company showcased both models at the recent IFA technology conference in Berlin.

LGTV

Don't count on buying one of these just yet — the new double-sided TVs are in a prototype phase, so there's no telling exactly when we'll see it come to market. It seems like it would be especially useful in commercial settings, such as shopping malls, where ads could be displayed on both sides of the screen to reach shoppers from all angles.

This isn't the first unconventional TV LG has shown off in recent months. Back in May, the company flaunted a super bendable TV screen that can be mounted on a wall just like wallpaper.

reed hastings, netflix, sv100 2015

Netflix is so popular that it uses over 35% of the bandwidth in North America. And keeping a juggernaut like Netflix running requires a large team of designers, engineers, managers, and customer service representatives.

Netflix is willing to shell out lots of money to make sure it recruits people who can deal with the fast pace of its product development, seeking out employees who can thrive in a hands-off work environment.

Using data from Glassdoor, we compiled a list of the highest salaries you can earn while working at Netflix, ranked from lowest to highest.

(Note: Some positions listed on Glassdoor were excluded because there weren't enough shared salaries. Each average salary included in this roundup has at least 5 reviews.)

14. Customer Service Supervisor III

Salary:$70,937

A customer service supervisor oversees the work of customer service representatives, who at Netflix surely deal with at least a few angry people who just want to watch a movie. Glassdoor reviewers describe the customer service department as flexible and not built on a script. But one reviewer says that sometimes customer service is also the last department to know about changes in the company.

13. Operations Manager

Salary: $75,072

Operations managers deal with the day-to-day operations of a company, monitoring and managing operational costs, according to Payscale. Netflix is a company where the operations of the company has shifted significantly with the move away from DVD and toward streaming. As one Glassdoor reviewer wrote in about the DVD side in 2009, “Relax. You will all be out of work in 5-7 years when everything goes online streaming.”

12. Software Engineer

Salary: $143,846

Software engineers design and build software. At Netflix, this can span all the various different departments needed for such a complex product. One Glassdoor reviewer says, “If you are a passionate engineer who likes to solve hard problems, you will love Netflix.”

Donald Trump has just sold the Miss Universe Organization, which includes the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageant groups, to the agency WME/IMG.

The agency made the announcement on Twitter on Monday morning.

"Having worked closely with The Miss Universe Organization in the past, we understand the incredible potential of the events and the star-quality of the participants," WME/IMG chief content officer Mark Shapiro said in a press release. "The global reach of The Miss Universe Organization and the content opportunities presented by the pageants make this a strong, strategic addition to our portfolio."

Trump issued the following statement:

"I have truly enjoyed owning the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA pageants. When I purchased the pageants many years ago, they were in serious trouble. It has been a great honor making them so successful … The pageants are now in the hands of a great company that will shepherd them to even greater levels of success.”

According to Trump's financial disclosure forms with the Federal Election Commission, The Miss Universe Organization has a value between $5 million and $25 million.

The sale occurs just days after Trump announced that he bought back the half of the organization owned by NBCUniversal. In a tweet, he did tell his followers to "stay tuned" for more information.

Earlier this year, NBCUniversal's NBC and Univision networks refused to air the Miss USA pageant after Trump made controversial statements about Mexican immigrants while he announced his presidential run. In a last-minute deal, the Reelz channel aired the pageant. There it drew 4 million fewer viewers than the year before when the pageant aired on NBC.

A Miss America contestant performed a science experiment as her talent, and the crowd went wild

Even if you don't watch a lot of beauty pageants, you can probably guess that when Miss Vermont took the stage in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on September 10 during the Miss America preliminary rounds and announced she would perform "a science experiment of epic proportions," something a bit different was going on.

"I will be the first to do a science experiment on the Miss America stage," she told NJ Advance Media in an interview, before she unveiled her talent in front of a cheering crowd.

After a perky monologue explaining that "science is all around us," she reminds the audience that "science can be messy — so don't try this at home."

Then she puts on her goggles — safety first! — and mixes hydrogen peroxide, potassium iodide, and soap in a few beakers. The stage-worthy result:

Miss Vermont's experiment, a popular one in introductory chemistry classes, is commonly known as "Elephant's Toothpaste." The potassium iodide speeds up the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which rapidly breaks down into oxygen and water. The water foams up the soap, and the oxygen shoots it up out of its container. All those colors you see are just food coloring, added for extra pizzazz.

For Miss Vermont, 24, whose real name is Alayna Westcom, the performance is more than just a stunt. Westcom's platform for the pageant is "Success Through STEM."

Her undergraduate degree is in forensics, and she completed a three-semester post-baccalaureate in in medical laboratory science. According to Seven Days, Vermont's alt-weekly publication, Westcom "works ... at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans and as an autopsy technician for Vermont's chief medical examiner in Burlington." Ultimately, Seven Days reported, she'd like to go to medical school and become a medical examiner herself.

As the reigning Miss Vermont, she also visits schools throughout the state to promote an interest in STEM. Her well-practiced Elephant's Toothpaste is apparently popular with the kids she visits, too.

"For so many years when I was going to school and choosing a STEM career, I'd always been told, 'You don't look like a scientist,'" she told Seven Days.

Now she's trying to prove the haters wrong.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is replacing Donald Trump on 'Celebrity Apprentice'

Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking over the firing (or is it terminating now?) on "Celebrity Apprentice."

The former California governor and movie star will replace Donald Trump when the reality show returns in the 2016-2017 season, according to an NBC press release on Monday.

"I have always been a huge fan of 'The Celebrity Apprentice' and the way it showcases the challenges and triumphs of business and teamwork," said Schwarzenegger in a statement. "I am thrilled to bring my experience to the boardroom and to continue to raise millions for charity.  Let's get started!"

“We are thrilled to be opening a powerful new chapter in the story of the ‘Apprentice’ franchise,” said NBC Entertainment's Alternative and Late Night Programming president, Paul Telegdy.

He continued, “Arnold Schwarzenegger is the epitome of a global brand in entertainment and business, and his accomplishments in the political arena speak for themselves. It was Arnold’s personal passion for the format that Mark Burnett and Donald Trump built over the last decade, as well as his fresh take on how to take it to new heights for today’s audiences, that made him the man to hire. ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’ … will be back!”

Schwarzenegger is best known as the star of the "Terminator" movie franchise, which has grossed billions of dollars in worldwide box office. According to IMDB, he has starred in dozens of other films, including "Predator," "Total Recall,"  "Conan the Barbarian," and "Kindergarten Cop."

In October 2003, Schwarzenegger was elected governor in a recall of Governor Gray Davis and was then re-elected for a second time in 2006.

donald trump apprenticeWhile the media and NBC have reported that Trump was fired from "Celebrity Apprentice" for making controversial statements about Mexican immigrants, the top-ranked republican presidential candidate has argued that he left the show to run for office

"Celebrity Apprentice" executive producer Mark Burnett seems to back Trump in a statement on Monday.

“After leaving the show to run for political office, Donald made it clear that he wanted ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’ to be able to continue to raise millions of dollars annually for worthy causes, and now NBC and I have found an amazing new leader to do just that,” said Burnett. “Governor Schwarzenegger will use his vast and highly successful business, political and media experience to drive this hit franchise to new heights.”

NBC had renewed "Celebrity Apprentice" in February for an eighth season, a 15th season if you count the entire "Apprentice" run. Last season, in which on-air personality Leeza Gibbons triumphed, "Celebrity Apprentice" averaged 7.6 million viewers— its best run since 2012.

Using a replacement isn't the ideal scenario, as the only other time "The Apprentice" was hosted by someone other than Trump, 2005's "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart," it premiered to just 7.1 million viewers or half of Trump's "Apprentice" viewership at the time.

If Schwarzenegger chooses to use Trump's infamous "You're fired" dismissal from "Celebrity Apprentice," it wouldn't be the first time he has used the phrase on screen.

Why Barbara Corcoran never invests in rich kids

After Ben and Eric Kusin revealed on the reality pitch show "Shark Tank" that their father, the founder of GameStop, invested $2 million into their business, things got personal.

"I feel very badly saying this to you, but I, as a matter of principle, don't invest in rich kids' businesses," investor Barbara Corcoran told the brothers.

Despite the Kusins' shocked expressions, they ended up leaving with a $150,000 investment from investor Lori Greiner for a 15% stake in their fabric-freshener company Reviver.

On Reddit, Eric writes that the episode was edited in a way that made the brothers seem more insulted than they actually were: "Ben and I both had some really good conversation about it in the Tank that unfortunately just got left on the edit room floor. I honestly think Barbara heard us out, and felt bad about generalizing us."

Regardless of how that particular discussion played out, we spoke with Corcoran recently, and she told us that she stood by her words, with some additional context.

During the Reviver pitch, the other Sharks told Corcoran that her prejudice against privilege was silly, because even though she was self-made and the daughter of a blue-collar father and stay-at-home mom, she is now the mother of rich kids.

But, Corcoran tells Business Insider, "it's not that I look down on [privilege]. It's harder for a kid with privilege and successful parents ... to succeed if they're going to be in business for themselves. I'm not talking about in corporate America or investment banking — all those connections play to your advantage, I think, along with education."

To Corcoran, an entrepreneur from a wealthy family doesn't need to start a business to make a living, and that is a critical difference when things inevitably get difficult. She believes that if you have a safety net, you won't be willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.

"The best way to think of a solution in business when you're slammed up against a wall is to try to think of five different solutions to get around it and keep going," Corcoran says. "But when you know that you have a trust fund, you know that you can always fall back on your parents, and you know that you can get additional funds, you get cheated out of thinking of those spur-of-the-moment, very needy ideas that get you through."

Above all, Corcoran looks for an entrepreneur with street smarts and hunger.

"I like to work with people that I feel I can really align myself with, and I get them and they get me," she says. "There's a great magic that happens there that you can't fake."

Ohio University Concert Party

Ohio University is the top party school in the nation, according to a new ranking released by Playboy Magazine.

In this year's tenth annual ranking, Ohio University dethroned the 2014 winner, UPenn, for the top spot. It's the first time the Athens, Ohio-based university took top honors, though it has made an appearance in three other rankings.

"Athens is home to one of the country’s largest Halloween block parties — a drunken fete so epic it attracts such sponsors as the infamous caffeinated alcohol Four Loko," Playboy writes.

"The debauchery escalates further at #Fest, OU’s take on Electric Daisy Carnival, where students double-fist Solo cups while bouncing to the sounds of Diplo, Wiz Khalifa, and Kendrick Lamar."

The 2015 #Fest took place in April and featured big-name musical guests including Diplo, Schoolboy Q, and ILoveMakonnen.

You can watch video of the 2014 event below:

"This year’s list was determined by the magazine’s editors who considered a variety of factors in their selection process, including access to nightlife and musical events and creativity when planning social gatherings. A reader’s poll and feedback from Playboy’s more than 28 million social media fans were also considered, along with information from the National Center for Education Statistics, the NCAA, and the US Economic Census," according to the press release from Playboy.

Here's the full top 10 party school list from Playboy:

  1. Ohio University
  2. University of Iowa
  3. Florida State University
  4. Tulane University
  5. University of Illinois
  6. University of Texas
  7. Syracuse University
  8. University of Wisconsin
  9. University of Mississippi
  10. University of Michigan

We just saw a new movie starring Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, and Rachel McAdams that's almost certain to get an Oscar nomination for Best Picture

The Toronto International Film Festival has always been one of the main platforms where Oscar-worthy films are born, and this year is no exception.

There's the gritty Netflix movie "Beasts of No Nation" that will certainly be in the conversation. And then there's the heart-wrenching "Room" that at the very least will garner nominations for its lead actors.

But one movie this year that has all the makings for a run at the Best Picture prize is Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight."

Based on the Boston Globe's 2002 work in the Massachusetts Catholic Church sex-abuse scandal— the uncovering of the alleged child molestation cover-up by the city's local Catholic archdiocese — it's the kind of well-crafted story Academy members gravitate toward.

A big reason for its success is the ensemble cast McCarthy compiled, which includes Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, and Billy Crudup.

The film has an "All the President's Men" vibe to it as we follow the Globe's investigative department, Spotlight. Spotlight is the oldest, continuously operating newspaper investigative unit in the US, headed by Robby Robinson (Keaton) in the movie. The paper's new editor, Marty Baron (Schreiber), assigns Spotlight a follow-up piece on a column the paper wrote about a priest who was allegedly caught molesting a child decades earlier.

At first the follow-up is thought to be just a good chase. But reporters Sacha Pfeiffer (McAdams) and Michael Rezendes (Ruffalo) discover that this is far from "a few bad apples in the bunch." They begin talking to victims and a tenacious lawyer (Tucci) who represents them. Soon, the Spotlight team discovers that close to 90 priests in the Boston area have been "relocated" or put on "sick leave" after the Catholic Church discovered they were sexually molesting children.

The biggest challenge with these kind of dramatic, newsroom-focused stories is finding the action that keeps the audience involved. But "Spotlight" does this well.

"Spotlight" accomplishes what films like "All the President's Men," "The Insider," and "Good Night, and Good Luck" did so well. It gives a behind-the-scenes look at a story that general audiences know a lot about thanks to years of constant news coverage on the subject, and it brings on actors who lift the stakes through their performances of scenes set in mundane meeting rooms, doorsteps, and back-alleys.

Though all the actors bring their A-game, standouts in the movie are Ruffalo and Keaton.

Keaton is no stranger to the newsroom. He was perfect as an editor of a New York tabloid in Ron Howard's "The Paper" in 1994. Here he's the Boston native who slowly realizes he'll have to ask a lot of tough questions of people he's known for most of his life to get to the bottom of the story.

Ruffalo, who plays the tenacious reporter Rezendes, is a go-getter so engrossed in his career that his marriage is falling apart. Even when he can step away, say for a jog, he finds himself right back at the newsroom.

Don't be surprised if either — perhaps both — get nominations on Oscar night.

McCarthy, who you'd recognize as an actor in countless movies (a memorable one is playing Dr. Bob in the "Meet the Parents" movies), has had success as a director in the past with indie titles "The Station Agent" and "The Visitor." But "Spotlight" — he also co-wrote the screenplay — is a well-crafted, easy-to-understand drama that shows his elevation as a storyteller. There could be an Oscar nomination in his future as well.

"Spotlight" opens in theaters November 6.
