'Godzilla' Reboot Origin Story Was Scrapped Because Of Superman

godzilla art of destruction book

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures recently released a longer look at its “Godzilla” reboot.

Before the film comes to theaters this May, publisher Insight Editions will release a hardcover book, “Godzilla: The Art of Destruction,” which will deliver an inside look at the film’s production from start to finish.

The book will contain a bunch of concept art including sketches, storyboards and interviews with director Gareth Edwards along with cast and crew.

Insight Editions shared a few early spreads from the upcoming book with us.

The most interesting thing we've learned so far is that the new Godzilla could have had a different origin story had it not been for last year's Superman reboot.

According to the book, originally a "Godzilla carcass was to have been discovered entombed in Siberia."

That was changed after the production learned "Man of Steel" had a potentially similar scene with a spaceship.

The full spread, featuring the original concept art, was shared exclusively with Business Insider.

Feel free to zoom in and read it below. (If viewing on mobile, check out the corresponding links which each image.)

Here's a red control room that will be seen early on in the reboot. Filming took place there for two to three days but set decorator Elizabeth Wilcox says it took months to prepare.

Dirt-Poor Sylvester Stallone Turned Down $300,000 In 1976 To Ensure He Could Play 'Rocky'

Rocky Sylvester Stallone

The "Rocky" franchise includes six films and has raked in more than a billion dollars at the box office since the first film premiered in 1976. But it almost didn't happen.

Sylvester Stallone was a relative newcomer to Hollywood in the mid-'70s when he pitched his rags-to-riches script about an uneducated debt-collector-turned-champion boxer named Rocky Balboa to producers.

Luckily, producers liked it. Unfortunately for Stallone, they didn't want him to star.

"They wanted every celebrated actor at the time," Stallone recalled Monday on the "Today Show." "And big-name directors, when they found out I wanted to be involved, they scattered, ran for the hills."

Instead of Stallone — the screenwriter — producers wanted Burt Reynolds, James Caan, or Ryan O'Neal, who were all big stars at the time.

So at 30 years old with just $106 in his bank account, Stallone turned down a $300,000 offer  the equivalent of $1 million today — for the rights to "Rocky." He was determined to make the film he wrote on his terms, starring himself.

"It was really insane at the time 'cause I was pretty broke," he said of his decision to hold out. But it ultimately paid off.

Sylvester Stallone Meryl Streep Oscars 1977In 1976, "Rocky" won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Stallone's experience at the ceremony could have been out of the movie.

"Literally, I was parking cars 10 months earlier and now here we are [at the Oscars]," Stallone recalled to "Today." "I rented a tuxedo and on the way to the Oscars the tie broke and the driver goes, 'You want to borrow mine?' I go 'nah, I guess it doesn't matter,' so I walk into the Oscars looking like Vinny Boom Bots, 'how you doin?' and people were like, 'oh my god, what arrogance, how dare he?'"

On a slim $1,075,000 production budget, "Rocky" went on to earn more than $117 million in the U.S. alone. The six-part "Rocky" franchise has since brought in more than a billion dollars worldwide.

Now 67, Stallone once again had to convince producers that "Rocky" could be a hit — this time in the form of a Broadway musical. Eventually, it worked, and the action star got investors to put up a $16.5 million capital investment.

Earlier this month, "Rocky: The Musical" opened on Broadway to knockout reviews.

Walter White

If Walter White tells you to go on a prom date with someone, you go — and you don't ask questions.

That's what high schooler Stefan Montana must have been thinking as he cornered Bryan Cranston near the stage door of his Broadway play "All The Way," hoping the "Breaking Bad" actor could help him get a date to the prom.

Playing off one of the White character's most famous quotes, Cranston said to the camera, "If you don't go to the prom with Stefan, your best course of action would be to tread lightly."

Luckily, it worked.

Here's the actual proposal video:

And this is a longer version, which shows Montana's request:

James Cameron Gave An Amazing Reddit AMA On Movies He Never Made And The Future Of ‘Avatar’

$

james cameron reddit"Avatar" and "Titanic" director James Cameron held an incredibly honest an informative Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) Saturday.

Currently working on the next three "Avatar" sequels simultaneously, Cameron gave fans an update on those films while addressing a range of topics that included previous works "The Abyss" and "The Terminator" and even his favorite guilty pleasure (it's "Resident Evil").

We've compiled a few of his best answers regarding movie ideas he scrapped along with his comments on the future of filmmaking.

You can read the AMA, in its entirety, HERE.

The scripts for the three “Avatar” sequels should be done in about six weeks.

Avatar movie

“The second, third and fourth films all go into production simultaneously. They're essentially all in preproduction now, because we are designing creatures, settings, and characters that span all three films. And we should be finished with all three scripts within the next, I would say, six weeks.

There's always pressure, whether it's a new film or whether it's a sequel, to entertain and amaze an audience. I've felt that pressure my entire career, so there's nothing new there. The biggest pressure I feel right now is cutting out things I love to get the film down to a length that is affordable. There hasn't been a problem finding new and wonderful things to include in the movie.”

Why a sequel to 1994’s “True Lies” was never made:

“We abandoned True Lies 2 after 9/11, because we didn't think a comedy about fundamentalist terrorists was so funny anymore. And then we never picked it up again.”

He’s not a big fan of all the other “Terminator” projects that were made.

terminator 3 rise of the machines large picture

“Well, I have to be objective, or as objective as possible about that. I'm not big fans of the films, I think that the big ideas of the first movies - I didn't make the second film until I had an idea as big as the first film, and it had to do with the moral complexity of the story, and asking the audience by the end of the film to cry for a Terminator. I don't think that the 3rd or 4th film lived up to that potential. Sarah Connor Chronicles I never really watched much of it, so I never gave it a chance I get to get hooked, like you have to with a TV series. I'm hopeful that the new films, which are being made right now as a reboot, but still involving Arnold, will be good. From what I've seen from afar, it looks like they will be quite good.”

He didn’t think “Prometheus” — an “Alien” prequel — completely made sense.

prometheus michael fassbender

“Interesting. I thought it was an interesting film. I thought it was thought provoking and beautifully, visually mounted, but at the end of the day it didn't add up logically. But I enjoyed it, and I'm glad it was made. I liked it better than the previous two Alien sequels.”

Fox ruined its chance at another Alien film from Cameron by making “Aliens Vs. Predator.”

“We never talked about Alien 3. I don't remember the timing exactly, but I might have been making the Abyss at that time, also for Fox. What came up was the idea of doing Alien 5, and at one point I pitched that I would write it and produce it, and Ridley would direct it, and we had lunch talking about this, and we were in violent agreement, then nothing happened. What happened was Fox went ahead with Aliens Vs Predator, and I said "I really don't recommend that, you'll ruin the franchise, it's like Universal doing Dracula versus the Werewolf," and then I lost interest in doing an Alien film. But Prometheus is seen as the A-level alien, as opposed to rather, the derivative. I don't think I have anything to offer on the Prometheus sequels, that's Ridley's, I think I'll stick to the Avatar universe.”

His most difficult films to make were “The Abyss,” “Titanic,” and “Avatar.”

titanic leonardo dicaprio kate winslet james cameron

“The physically hardest was the Abyss, because there was a period of 10 weeks where I was literally underwater 10 hours a day, for 6 days a week. And anybody that's a scuba diver knows that that's the experience of 7 or 8 dives a day, and nobody does that. So that was the most physically taxing. I think the most emotionally difficult was Titanic, because the entire film industry was scorning us for our abject stupidity while we were in post-production on that film. Eventually, we prevailed, but it was a difficult time. In terms of craft, Avatar was the most challenging, because of the editorial process on the film.”

His adaptation of “Battle Angel” (a manga series) is on hold until — at least — after the “Avatar” films.

“Currently the project is on hold until I finish the currently planned Avatar sequels, which will be a number of years.”

How he really felt about Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson’s criticism of the “Titanic” night sky being historically inaccurate.

titanic sinking

“I wasn't particularly embarrassed because I think that's an unbelievably specific nitpick and if that caused him to not enjoy the film, he may need to reevaluate his priorities. That said, because I'm such a perfectionist, I challenged him to provide me with the correct star fields and incorporated them into the future rereleases of the film. So, if you watch the film now, the stars are correct.”

He believes all movies should be made in 3D.

“48 fps to me is not a format, it's a tool, like music it's good to use sparingly and in the right spot. I believe all movies should be made in 3D, forever, but the projection needs to be better, and brighter. I want people to see in the movie theaters what I am seeing in my perfectly calibrated screening room, and people aren't seeing that. Larger formats. I'd love to see screens get bigger. In terms of storytelling, I'd like to see Hollywood embrace the caliber of writing in feature films that we're currently seeing in the series on television - more emphasis on character, and less on explosions and pyrotechnics. And I'm talking the big tentpole movies, I think they're obnoxiously loud and fast.”

Cameron is interested in the potential of virtual reality in film.

sydney kramer business insider oculus rift

“I personally would be very interested to find a way to incorporate VR and a narrative filmmaking experience. So a narrative directed experience that has individuated pathways where you have choices that you make in real-time, I think that would be a lot of fun. I think it would be very technically daunting and expensive, to do it as the same quality level as a typical feature, but it would be fun to experiment with. It sounds like a lot of fun. I don't think it would take over the feature film market though. I'm very familiar with VR, but I haven't seen the specific Oculus Rift device. I'm interested in it, I'm meant to see it sometime in the next month or so, but I've been familiar with VR since its inception. In fact, virtual reality is a way of describing the way we work on Avatar, we work in a virtual workspace all day long. We use a "virtual camera" which is how I create all the shots that are CG in the film, a window into a virtual reality that completely surrounds me.”

Cameron sees filmmaking as “therapy” to alleviate recurring nightmares.

terminator 2 judgment day

“I’ve never had nightmares about Terminators after I made the film. I had nightmares that inspired the film. But I always feel that making the film is the catharsis that stops the nightmares, if you will."

"For example, I used to always have nightmares about giant waves, tsunamis essentially. And when I made the Abyss, which had a giant wave scene in it, those stopped."

"Filmmaking is therapy.”

The US Navy's Real-Life Captain Kirk Got An Awesome Letter From William Shatner

The captain and crew of the futuristic USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) received an awesome letter from actor William Shatner prior to the ship's christening on Saturday.

The ship, which will be the most technologically-advanced destroyer in the Navy when it becomes operational, is commanded by a real-life Capt. James Kirk. And while he's of no relation to the fictional Capt. Kirk played by William Shatner in "Star Trek," many have had fun with that coincidence.

That included Shatner himself, as a photo tweeted by Barbara Zumwalt yesterday showed the framed photo and letter he sent to the sailors who will soon be onboard, which is currently on display at Bath Iron Works in Maine.

"Unfortunately I can't be with you when your vessel is commissioned and obviously your captain, Captain Kirk, is dear to my heart," Shatner wrote. "So forgive me for not attending, my schedule won't allow me, but know that you are in our thoughts — Mr. & Mrs. Shatner — and that we bless you and hope that you have a safe journey wherever your ship takes you."

This week’s “Saturday Night Live” cold open had Congressman Paul Ryan (Taran Killam) and former Governor Jeb Bush (Beck Bennett) crash the Coachella stage.

The annual music and arts festival is currently taking place in California.

Before headliner Outkast took the stage, Ryan and Bush were introduced to the young crowd as “some special guests who paid to come and say a few quick words. They call themselves the ‘new faze of the Republican party.’”

The two awkwardly addressed the “new Republican party” to the Coachella scene referring to the concertgoers as “homeslices” who they were sure have seen their commercials during Meet the Press.”

The duo tried to gain support for reducing regulations on small business but only managed to get a rousing round of applause from the crowd after mentioning gay marriage — before revealing the GOP’s plans to discuss it less moving forward.

Rand Paul (Brooks Wheelan) also appeared to DJ about the NSA, while Bobby Jindal (Nasim Pedrad) appeared on stage after taking “something called ‘Molly’ backstage.”

Sunday, April 13 is the final season premiere of the AMC hit series "Mad Men."

And keeping in mind that only two days later is the due date for those pesky taxes (you knew that, right?), H&R Block put together a fun infographic looking at how tax season would have affected our favorite characters from the world of "Mad Men" — how much they earned, how they could file, and how much they would need to hand over to the government.

The characters' salary estimates are from the show's first few seasons, so chances are, they're making (and paying) even more now.

Below, check out Don's exemptions, Joan's bracket, Peggy's bill, and more.

Harrison Ford Explained The Story Behind The Best Scene In 'Indiana Jones'

$

Harrison Ford held an AMA question and answer session on Reddit Sunday, where he discussed the story behind one of the most famous scenes in the "Indiana Jones" films.

In the first movie, "Raiders of the Lost Ark," Indiana Jones is being chased through the streets of Cairo by a bunch of goons. He comes face to face with a scary swordsman who brandishes his weapon, preparing for what seems to be an epic duel. Instead, Indiana shoots the swordsman.

Genius.

In the AMA, Ford said the scene was actually supposed to be a lengthy sword fight. But he was suffering from dysentery at the time, and he could only film scenes in 10-minute increments before having to run to his trailer to, uh, take care of business. Instead, Ford and director Steven Spielberg decided it would be better to have Indiana shoot the swordsman, considering the scene would've taken an extra three days to shoot.

Here's Ford's full answer and a YouTube clip of the scene he describes:

We were shooting in Tunisia, and the script had a scene in which I fight a swordsman, an expert swordsman, it was meant to be the ultimate duel between sword and whip. And I was suffering from dysentery, really, found it inconvenient to be out of my trailer for more than 10 minutes at a time. We'd done a brief rehearsal of the scene the night before we were meant to shoot it, and both Steve and I realized it would take 2 or 3 days to shoot this. And it was the last thing we were meant to shoot in Tunisia before we left to shoot in England. And the scene before this in the film included a whip fight against 5 bad guys that were trying to kidnap Marian, so I thought it was a bit redundant. I was puzzling how to get out of this 3 days of shooting, so when I got to set I proposed to Steven that we just shoot the son a bitch and Steve said "I was thinking that as well." So he drew his sword, the poor guy was a wonderful British stuntman who had practiced his sword skills for months in order to do this job, and was quite surprised by the idea that we would dispatch him in 5 minutes. But he flourished his sword, I pulled out my gun and shot him, and then we went back to England.

Why 'Mad Men' Paid $250,000 To Use One Beatles Song

$
0
0

Mad Men, Beatles

Music has always been one of the most important aspects of AMC's "Mad Men."

Which is why, when creator Matthew Weiner wanted to use a Beatles song in season 5's "Lady Lazarus" episode, he refused to settle for anything but the real deal.

Instead of using a cover of the band's "Tomorrow Never Knows," Weiner insisted they use a master recording that cost the production upward of $250,000.

As we head into the Season 7 (Part 1) premiere this Sunday, here's the behind-the-scenes story of how one pricey "Mad Men" episode came to be.

"The Band of the 20th Century"

From the real-life ad campaigns to the fashions, most everything on "Mad Men" is authentically 1960s. But for Weiner, there was always one glaring inauthenticity on the show.

“It was always my feeling that the show lacked a certain authenticity because we never could have an actual master recording of the Beatles performing," Weiner told The New York Times. "It always felt to me like a flaw. Because they are the band, probably, of the 20th century.”

That isn't to say that the series has never sampled from the band's catalogue. In season 4 episode "Hands and Knees," Beatles song "Do You Want to Know a Secret" played over the credits. However, it was an instrumental cover which only requires the more affordable publishing rights.

The difference between publishing rights and master rights is that while the publishing rights are controlled by the publisher working for the songwriter or composer, master recordings are owned by record labels. Labels get to set the price for how the song is being used and how popular they think it is.

Acquiring the rights to any music can be costly enough, but gaining the rights to a Beatles recording is extremely expensive and difficult — a fact that Weiner and "Mad Men" would soon come to realize.

Don Draper's $250,000 Beatles Record

For television, the Beatles had always been the "holy grail" when it came to licensing.

Revolver, The Beatles

This meant that "Mad Men" had an up-hill battle, but it helped that the remaining members of the band are fans of the show.

"In the case of the Beatles, they're not known for opening up their song catalogue to everyone," show writer Andre Jacquemetton told the Canadian Press. "It just turns out actually that they're huge fans of the show.

According to The Wall Street Journal, it's common to hear Beatles covers, but not the actual Beatles songs. When it does happen, it typically "involves fees of over $1 million." Such was the case with 2010's "Dinner For Schmucks," which used "Fool on the Hill" for a reported $1.5 million.

In contrast, most other popular songs that are licensed for TV shows can be purchased for under $100,000.

Ultimately, Lionsgate — the studio behind "Man Men" — paid $250,000, and used the song for less than 2 minutes in season 5's "Lady Lazarus," as Don Draper tried to stay in tune with '60s youth culture, but was ultimately left unimpressed.

Watch the $250,000 scene below:

The Beatles and "The End" of "Mad Men"

mad men season 7 don draper

"Mad Men's" use of "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the first time a TV show had used a Beatles master track, and with that distinction came a price that was about five times the average rate.

Yet, even though the costs were high, this may not be the last time "Mad Men" uses the Fab Four's catalogue.

As we head into the series' final season, the music of Paul, John, George, and Ringo may play into Weiner's end-game for the entire series, as he told Grantland:

"I want to leave the show in a place where you have an idea of what it meant and how it’s related to you. It’s a very tall order, but I always talk about 'Abbey Road. What’s the song at the end of 'Abbey Road'? It’s called ‘The End.’ There is a culmination of an experience of people working at their highest level."

‘Game Of Thrones’ Actor Is Retiring After Sunday Night’s Episode

Warning: Don't read ahead if you haven't seen Sunday night's episode. There are major spoilers ahead.

game of thrones joffrey tyrion jack gleesonLast November, 21-year-old “Game of Thrones” actor Jack Gleeson said he would likely retire from acting after he finished work on the HBO series.

Gleeson, who plays the King everyone loves to hate on the series, Joffrey Baratheon, told The Independent he was never really a fan of being a celebrity.

"The lifestyle that comes with being an actor in a successful TV show isn't something I gravitate towards,” Gleeson told The Independent.

If you tuned in Sunday night, you’ll know Gleeson’s character was killed off in dramatic fashion.

Is that the last of Gleeson we’ll see on screen? For now, yes.

The 21-year-old actor confirmed to Entertainment Weekly he's walking away from Hollywood.

“I’ve been acting since age 8. I just stopped enjoying it as much as I used to. And now there’s the prospect of doing it for a living, whereas up until now it was always something I did for recreation with my friends, or in the summer for some fun. I enjoyed it. When you make a living from something, it changes your relationship with it. It’s not like I hate it, it’s just not what I want to do.”

Gleeson said he’s not sure what he wants to do instead of acting, but he has one year left in college right now.

“After that, I might do a post-graduate of some kind, but I don’t know in what,” Gleeson added.

If you’ll miss him on screen, the young actor said there’s always the chance he may return to Hollywood, but it sounds like a long shot.

“When I’m destitute in 10 years time, I’ll accept any script,” Gleeson told EW. “No. As long as I’m in the not-ungrateful-but-perhaps-happy place where I can say ‘No’ to whatever, I’m going to do that.”

NETFLIX: Our Streaming Speeds Got A Lot Faster Since We Started Paying Comcast

Netflix released new stats today that show which Internet providers have the fastest access to the service's streaming video.

Most notably, Comcast has jumped up five spots in the rankings following Netflix's controversial decision last month to start paying the provider for direct access to its network.

Netflix agreed to pay Comcast an undisclosed sum so Comcast would connect directly to Netflix's video servers, meaning Comcast customers would get faster streaming speeds. Before that, Netflix speeds on Comcast were slowing down over the last year or so because so many people were streaming video that it clogged the servers of Cogent, a third-party Netflix was paying.

Meanwhile, other Internet providers like AT&T have also reportedly asked Netflix for money so they can connect directly to Netflix's servers.

In today's report, Netflix highlighted how important it is for Internet providers to work with Netflix:

This month’s rankings are a great illustration of how performance can improve when ISPs work to connect directly to Netflix. In the US, the average speed on the Comcast network for Netflix streams is up 65 percent from 1.15Mbps in January to 2.5 Mbps in March

Kevin Spacey Has Replaced The Talking Baby As The Face Of E*Trade

The face of online stock trading company E*Trade is now a little bit older and a lot more suave.

E*Trade announced in March that it would no longer employ the talking baby mascot that appeared in ads at six consecutive Super Bowls beginning in 2008.

On Sunday, the company posted an ad to its YouTube page revealing that it has instead turned to "House of Cards" actor Kevin Spacey to attract a more sophisticated clientele.

In the ad, Spacey plays a "talent scout" who spots a prospective E*Trade customer filling his plate at a fancy buffet. Spacey then compliments the man on both his trading and culinary savvy.

"Who would have thought three-cheese lasagna would go with chocolate cake and ceviche? The same guy who thought that small caps and bond funds would go with emerging markets. It's a masterpiece," Spacey gushes, before handing the man a business card anointing him a member of the "Type E*" club.

Adweek reports that the ad is the first in a series of Spacey spots from Ogilvy & Mather, which E*Trade tapped to replace Grey this past July.

The E*Trade baby made Super Bowl audiences laugh with his deep voice and surprising stock-trading knowhow, but the company has since decided to pivot toward a marketing strategy that caters to existing customers and others already comfortable with the stock market rather than the average American.

By using Spacey to communicate the company's brand as a sort of exclusive club for people who understand the market, E*Trade is narrowing its focus on this core consumer, rather than one who might laugh at a funny ad but remain hesitant about making a potentially risky investment.

For old time's sake, here's the E*Trade baby's first Super Bowl ad, from 2008:

liv tyler the leftovers HBO

HBO has released another teaser trailer for its next show, “The Leftovers,” and it has us pretty intrigued.

It begins with a narrative contemplating what happens to those who die.

We’re told “there really is no death.”

The visuals themselves are pretty calm. There’s a memorial parade held in the town of Mapleton and we see actor Justin Theroux (“Six Feet Under”) jogging through the town of Mapleton.

Other than this image that stands in place for a mirror at the 33-second mark, it seems like a pretty normal town.the leftovers (Obviously, it’s not.)

Suddenly, at 40 seconds in, the trailer takes a creepy turn.

People are diving off buildings …the leftovers building dive
… a guy is freaking out in a car …

… there’s a girl crudely gesturing about death ...

the leftovers girl

… and it looks like some other person is burning.

man on fire the leftovers

It’s total chaos.

When you take a look at the series’ synopsis from HBO, the preview starts to make some more sense:

“When 2% of the world’s population abruptly disappears without explanation, the world struggles to understand just what they’re supposed to do about it. Three years later, the new HBO drama series THE LEFTOVERS is the story of the people who didn’t make the cut.”

The series is based on Tom Perrotta’s best-selling novel of the same name about the Rapture, and comes from "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof.

"The Leftovers" premieres on HBO June 15.

Howard Stern

Shock jock Howard Stern once traded shots with the suspect in Sunday's shooting that left three people dead at a Jewish community center and retirement home in Kansas.

Frazier Glenn Miller, aka Frazier Glenn Cross, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, posted audio of an interview he did on Stern's radio show on his website. The interview appears to date from Miller's unsuccessful 2010 Senate campaign as Stern refers to the race and quips Miller is "the only honest politician out there." Throughout the interview, Miller rages about Jews.

"Compared to our Jewish problem, all other problems are mere distractions," Miller said.

Stern's co-host, Robin Quivers, asked Miller to explain "the biggest problem with the Jews."

"They control the federal government, they control the mass media, they control the Federal Reserve Bank, and with those powers, they commit genocide against the white race," said Miller. "The Jews control the United States government according to Patrick Buchanan."

Stern also asked Miller to explain his campaign slogan, which is: "It's the Jews, stupid."

"That really tells it all, doesn't it?" Miller said.

At one point, Miller challenged Stern, who is Jewish.

"What gives Jews the right to Israel? You tell us," Miller said to the host. "You're a Jew. You support Israel and you know it."

"Oh, I do support Israel," responded Stern. "I think it's great."
