Harrison Ford Explains How He Went From Full-Time Carpenter To Han Solo In 'Star Wars'

Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford held a Reddit Ask Me Anything Sunday that not only revealed one of the best scenes from the "Indiana Jones" films was thanks to food poisoning, but also how he was cast in the original "Star Wars."

During the AMA, Ford was asked how he felt about "Star Wars" when he first started and how he was approached for his role in the film.

Ford went on to share the famous story of how he got his big break as galactic smuggler Han Solo in 1977's "Star Wars" while still working as a full-time carpenter.

"My principle job at the time was carpentry," Ford said in the AMA. "I had a house at the time I wanted to remodel, a bit of the wreck of a house. I'd invest money in tools but wouldn't have money for materials, so I realized this was another way of putting food on the table."

Ford added he got the role from standing in for screen tests for director George Lucas, who worked with Ford in "American Graffiti."

"I had helped George Lucas audition other actors for the principle parts, and with no expectation or indication that I might be considered for the part of Han," Ford said. "I was quite surprised when I was offered the part."

Lucas would later say in an interview that Ford's casting was the most serendipitous, but ultimately that he was better than any of the actors who were actually auditioning for the role.

Watch below one of the fateful auditions that got Ford the part:

David Fincher Won't Direct Steve Jobs Movie After Alleged $10 Million Demand

David Fincher

Despite widespread rumors, David Fincher (“The Social Network”) won’t be directing Sony's Steve Jobs biopic, according to The Hollywood Reporter

THR reports Fincher had "aggressive demands for compensation and control," including $10 million upfront and control over how the movie would be marketed.

Variety reports Fincher has a number of other projects he's currently working on and never officially signed on to direct.

The biopic, with a screenplay written by Aaron Sorkin, is based off of Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography, “Steve Jobs.”

The film would have re-teamed Sorkin and Fincher since their Oscar-winning “The Social Network” in 2010.

With Fincher unattached to the project, the chances of Christian Bale as Jobs are probably unlikely since he was reportedly the director’s top choice for the role.

The Jobs’ movie is currently slated for a 2016 release.

Tom Cruise Will Take On Drones In ‘Top Gun’ Sequel

Nearly 30 years after the original film, we're getting a ‘Top Gun’ sequel with Tom Cruise — and drones.

We’ve heard bits and pieces about the sequel, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer laid out a better picture of what the movie will entail with Bloomberg’s Jon Erlichman.

“Technology has changed obviously since we made the first one,” says Bruckheimer. “So, I think we’re going to take advantage of what the world is like today, you know with the drones really kind of taking over in a lot of our wars."

"Is the pilot obsolete? Are those guys … those jet jockeys, are they gone from now? No, I don’t think so," Bruckheimer added.

Bruckheimer, who says the sequel has been in the works for 30 years, shared it was the late Tony Scott who came up with the film’s premise.

The producer is also working on another installment to “Beverly Hills Cop” with returning actor Eddie Murphy.

Bruckheimer discusses the two sequels near the beginning of the interview starting at the 1:15 mark.

How James Patterson Sells More Books Than J.K. Rowling Or Stephen King

James Patterson

According to Nielsen BookScan, James Patterson has sold more books in the past decade than any other writer — more than Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling or horror master Stephen King.

To date, Patterson has sold 300 million copies of 130 novels worldwide.

Previously a creative director for the massive ad agency J. Walter Thompson, Patterson published his first novel in 1976. Though he now writes across genres, he started in thrillers. Patterson puts the turn into page-turner — quickly paced plots with short chapters, crisp sentences, and a gruesome murder here and there.

To allow for his outsize output, Patterson has shifted from the standard method of publishing, where one author writes a given book. Instead, he treats his Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club, and other series the way a television writer might approach a new season of "The West Wing." He's worked with more than 20 co-authors, and, since 2002, he's written only a reported 20% of his books by himself.

Thus his outrageously high productivity. He will publish 15 books this year alone. As the U.K.'s Telegraph reported, Patterson has had 4.7 published pages per working day since 1976.

We spoke with Patterson about how he writes and approaches his business. (This interview has been condensed and edited.)

Business Insider: Your book sales show you've developed an ear for knowing what people want to read. How did you develop that?

James Patterson: I think to some extent it's story, story, story. I'm a storyteller. That's what a lot of people want out of books. I'm reading "Flash Boys." Michael Lewis is a terrific storyteller. He has that ability to take something that could have been the driest, most boring goddamned thing, but he makes it dramatic. I think that's a piece of it. People who have that ability to turn that situation into a compelling story. That's one of the things.

With me, it's a combination of pace and then trying to make sure that the characters I'm writing about hold people's interest and they want to be involved with them.

Could you walk me through a typical workday for you?

I'm usually up 5:30-ish. I will write for an hour or so. Then quickly blast through the highlights of a few newspapers — The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today. Frequently, then, I will go and walk the golf course for maybe an hour. I'm usually back here by 9:30 or so. Write until noon. Go to lunch with my wife. Come back and write some more. Occasionally, I'll write later at night if I'm worried about something, or if there's some inspiration and I need to deal with it a bit.

It's pretty much seven days a week. Somebody said, you're lucky if you find something you like to do and then it's a miracle somebody will pay you to do it. That's my situation. It's not work for me. These are all stories that I'm really dying to tell.

What do you do when you sit down to write?

What will be sitting out will be wherever I am on a certain manuscript that I'm writing myself or a manuscript that I'm rewriting, one of the co-author-written things or an outline or two. There are usually at least three or four things ... then I just decide which one am I going work on that day, or sometimes I'll work on two or three in the same day.

What's a good day's writing look like for you?

For me it's all rewriting. It's layering. The writing keeps hopefully getting better. The dialogue gets sharper. My style is very colloquial. It's the way we tell stories. It would be a disaster if everybody wrote the way I do. I don't put in a ton of detail.

I used to live across the street from [former U.S. Army General] Alexander Haig. If I were telling you a story and went out to get the mail and there was Haig lying in the driveway, if I then for the next five minutes talked about the palm trees waving and the architecture of the house, you'd say, "What the f---? Stop! What's the story with Haig?" I kind of write that way. I'm going to write about Haig in the driveway, and you're only going to hear about the architecture if it really is relevant to the story I'm telling.

When you say that the writing and rewriting is a matter of "getting better," what does getting better mean to you?

Emotionally, I just go, "This isn't there yet. I'm not feeling it." I'll put "Be there" on a top of a chapter sometimes. I need to be in the scene. I need to have put enough detail in there where I'm seeing it, I'm certainly feeling it. The dialogue needs to be somewhat true. It needs to be moving the thing forward instead of marching in place.

I'd like to digress a bit and talk about the way you work with co-authors. Did your former life in advertising help shape this collaborative way of working?

There are a lot of things that are collaborative. You start wandering through Florence and Venice and start looking at these churches. They are all collaborations. You look at these ceilings and you see, like, nine painters.

TV scripts — 60 pages, two writers. Movie scripts — four writers. It's a lot more prevalent than people think it is.

What's the workflow of the collaboration look like?

The outline will be 60 to 80 pages. I then ask what they contribute, for a couple of reasons. One is, I want their ideas. Secondly, I want them invested, which is most important. With all the people I work with, they want to do this as well as they can do it. This is not hack work. There's pride. They are into it emotionally.

I insist on seeing stuff every two or three weeks. With publishers, they say, "We'll see in a year or so," and they go, "Oh, this isn't really what I was thinking of." With me, it's every couple of weeks, and I'll get pages and I'll talk — "This is going well, remember this, remember this. Hold it, we're off the tracks. We got to stop it and figure out where this went." Then we'll talk about that, and then continue.

When do you feel like you're doing your best work?

I'll write a good chapter. I'll write a good outline. My outlines, you read one of my 80-page outlines and you felt like you read a book. The story is all there. That's very satisfying to me. I can make a breakthrough on an outline or on a direction or with something that was missing from the story. That is very satisfying. I can come up with a new idea. That's probably the most joyful thing, to go,"You know, it would be very cool ... "

Paul Walker fast and furious

When “Fast & Furious 7” comes to theaters next year, Paul Walker’s character, Brian O’Connor, will return to the big screen with the help of his two younger brothers.

Universal Studios announced today that Walker’s brothers Caleb and Cody will stand in for the actor to help complete small gaps in production.

Walker passed away last November in a car crash, leaving major scenes in the sequel left unfilmed.

As a result, the film’s release was pushed back from 2014 to April 10, 2015 as production took time to grieve and figure out how to rework the sequel.

The film, which resumed shooting earlier this month, will reportedly use a mix of CGI and body doubles to stand-in for Walker.

Earlier it was rumored Walker’s brother Cody was approached to fill in for scenes

A Note to the Fans of FAST & FURIOUS

The FAST & FURIOUS saga is about family. The characters are connected by the bond of family, and it is how all of us who have worked together for more than thirteen years feel about each other. It certainly defines how we feel about our fans.

Our family experienced an unthinkable shock in November. We had to take time to grieve Paul, the brother we love and lost, and to figure out if we should move on with our film.

We came together and all felt the only choice was to continue. We believe our fans want that, and we believe Paul would want that too. Paul had already shot his dramatic scenes and most of his action for FAST & FURIOUS 7, and it’s among the strongest work of his career.

We have resumed shooting and now welcome Paul’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, into our FAST family. Caleb and Cody are helping us complete some remaining action for their brother and fill in small gaps left in production. Having them on set has made us all feel that Paul is with us too.

We are just under a year away from the release of FAST & FURIOUS 7, and this film is the most important we’ve ever done together. It will allow the character of Brian O’Conner to live on and let us celebrate Paul in his most defining role.

We wanted to take a moment to speak to our fans directly and thank you for the love and support you always show us as we resume our work.

How A Schoolyard Bully Helped Andrew Garfield Become Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider Man 2Even the Amazing Spider-Man can be a victim of bullying.

In an interview with The Guardian, Andrew Garfield — the actor who plays Spider-Man in the upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man 2" — explains how he was bullied as a child.

"I enjoyed my childhood, though looking back on school, that was both great and awful," he told the British newspaper.

Garfield, who was born in Los Angeles but grew up in England, mentioned that being "stupidly sensitive" made him a target for bullies.

"I had the general bullying experience where there was a kid who wasn't very happy and he threw his weight around," Garfield said. "He targeted me because I was skinny and thin-skinned and he knew it."

But the bad experience at school led Garfield to delve into comics books, specifically the famous web-slinger he would one day go on to play.

"If it weren't for that bully, I wouldn't have found Spider-Man," he said. "That's why I got so lost in the comics and the cartoon series. I would fantasize about being him."

The 30-year-old added, "It is really interesting, though ... what you perceive as your wounds can later on turn into the biggest gifts you have."

Garfield will host SNL on May 3, while "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" swings into theaters May 2.

12 Places In Pixar Movies That Actually Exist In Real Life

pixar

An Easter egg, as it relates to movies, is when the movie's creators hide something in the film that's an intentional inside joke.

Some Easter eggs are more well known, like how Hitchock makes cameo appearances in his films, but some Easter eggs are a little harder to find, even for the well-trained eye.

Pixar is no stranger to the Easter egg world, and it includes dozens of Easter eggs in its movies. There's even something called the Pixar Theory, where all the Pixar characters live in the same universe.

Some of the Pixar Easter eggs are based on real-world locations. There are obvious ones — in the beginning of the movie "Cars," the announcer says that the entire town of Emeryville will be closed for the race; Pixar Studios is in Emeryville, Calif. — but some aren't so obvious.

Fenton's Creamery in 'Up' is located in Oakland, Calif.

At the end of the movie, Russell and Carl can be seen eating an ice cream cone on the sidewalk in front of Fenton's Creamery

The real Fenton's is a local favorite, located on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland. The ice cream shop opened in 1894, and moved to its current location in the 1960s. It also claims to be where Rocky Road ice cream was born.

The Grand Lake Theater in 'Up' can be found in Oakland, Calif.

During the credit sequence, we see a photo of Carl and Russell going to see "Star Wars."

This Easter egg is two-fold: many speculate that this was foreshadowing a new "Star Wars" film. In 2012 — three years after "Up" came out — Disney announced it would release a new "Star Wars" movie in 2015.

The second part of the Easter egg ...

Brad Pitt To Star As Gen. Stan McChrystal In Film About Army Officer's Infamous Downfall

Brad Pitt will star as Gen. Stanley McChrystal in the film adaptation of Michael Hastings' book "The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pitt, who will also be a producer, will be joined by David Michod, who THR reports will write and direct the film.

"The Operators" gave a longer, behind-the-scenes look at the conduct of McChrystal and his staff in Afghanistan and while traveling in Europe. It was a followup to Hastings' award-winning Rolling Stone article "The Runaway General," which included damaging statements made by McChrystal's staffers that ended up getting the general fired.

At the time of the incident, McChrystal was the commander of all coalition forces in Afghanistan. He was replaced by Gen. David Petraeus.

Writing in his book "Duty," then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates wrote of the incident:

About five p.m., Stan called me to apologize for the article. Deeply fearful of its impact on the war, for once I couldn't contain my anger: "What the f--- were you thinking?" McChrystal offered no explanation, didn't say he or his staff had been misquoted or that the article was distorted in any way. The four-star general replied essentially as he had been taught as a cadet at West Point—"No excuse, sir."

Pitt's production company Plan B will produce the film along with New Regency and Brett Ratner's RatPac Entertainment, Rolling Stone reports. No production date has been set.

'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals Series Finale Had Alternate 'Bloodbath' Ending

jesse walt breaking bad

Ending a beloved series the wrong way can bring a lot of backlash (just ask "How I Met Your Mother"), so when creator Vince Gilligan had to send "Breaking Bad" into the sunset he made sure there was more than one possible outcome.

In an interview with EW, Vince Gilligan revealed that there was "30 or 40 different permutations of the ending" for the series finale, "Felina." Mostly because they boxed themselves into a corner introducing Walt's M60 in the first episode.

"Out of cockiness or stupidity, 16 episodes from the end, we had Walter White show up in a beard, long hair, and a new set of glasses, buying an M60 machine gun in a Denny’s parking lot," Gilligan said. "We didn’t really know how we were going to get to that story point — we didn’t even know what that meant or what Walt was going to use that machine gun for."

Trying to figure out what Walt would do with the giant M60 led Gilligan and the writers to craft an ending where having the gun made sense.

One of those endings had Walt shooting up a jail to rescue Jesse, which was ultimately scratched because the creators felt that Walt wasn't bad enough by that point to shoot up a bunch of innocent people. Another had him shoot up a prison bus in the same fashion.

Gilligan even considered an ending of killing off all the major characters in a violent wild west type bloodbath.

"At one point, we talked about killing off every major character," he said. "One particularly dark week along the way we talked about killing everybody — having some sort of 'Wild Bunch' bloodbath of an ending."

However, the conclusion they came to for the finale was ultimately the most "organic."

"The best way to go about this job... is to tell the story as organically as possible and to tell it brick by brick," Gilligan said. "You keep reminding yourself: Sometimes micro is more important than macro."

Mercedes has not yet announced the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe's price, though it may be in the same range as the $155,000 CL63 AMG it replaces.

CIA Allegedly Used Red Hot Chili Peppers Music To Torture Guantanamo Inmate

The funk-rock antics of the Red Hot Chili Peppers can now be listed alongside waterboarding as methods of torture the CIA allegedly used against Guantanamo Bay detainees, Al Jazeera reports, citing an anonymous U.S. interrogator.

Songs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers would allegedly be blasted at excessively loud volumes on a constant loop in order to disorientate Abu Zubaida, a detainee at a black site prison being operated out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The alleged use of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for interrogation is just one of the latest revelations of the full extent of CIA's brutal enhanced interrogation techniques. The revelations come from a still-classified 6,600-page Senate report on the breadth of CIA torture.

Other torture techniques that the CIA allegedly used at its black site prisons included sleep deprivation for up to 11 days and the stuffing of detainees into pet carry crates.

Speaking to TMZ, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith responded angrily to revelations that his music was used for torture, saying "our music's positive, man. It's supposed to make people feel good and that's ... It's very upsetting to me, I don't like that at all. It's bullsh---."

This isn't the first time musicians were angered that interrogators had equated their songs with torture. In February, Canadian industrial rock band Skinny Puppy sent the Pentagon a $660,000 invoice after discovering Guantanamo Bay interrogators had used its music.

In recent years, the annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival has become as much a fashion show as it is about the music.

This year, trends on the fields included furry boots, floral headpieces, large hats, cut-off shorts, embellished sunglasses, and even one giant nose ring.

But when it's nearly 100 degrees in the desert on the outskirts of Palm Springs, clothing is limited — and sometimes, optional.

Coachella-goers bring out their craziest and most colorful outfits for the three-day festival in the hot desert.

mrs doubtfire hello

Mrs. Doubtfire will report for duty once again.

More than 20 years after the original film, Robin Williams is going reprise his role as the cross-dressing nanny in a "Mrs. Doubtfire" sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Chris Columbus will return as director while David Berenbaum, who has worked on "Elf" and "The Haunted Mansion," will write the script.

The 1993 film had Williams cross dress as an older nanny in order to spend time with his kids after a messy divorce.

The film was a hit, making $441 million worldwide on an estimated $25 million budget.

It's difficult to see how the film can carry on from the first so many years later.

Even Williams has said sequel attempts have been tried three times over for the film without success.

The closest a sequel ever came to the big screen was when Bonnie Hunt stepped in to write a script back in 2001. That film was ultimately scrapped with Williams telling Newsweek in 2006 "the script they had just didn't work."

There's no set date for the upcoming sequel.

For now, let's relive one of our favorite scenes:
