Former Amazon Employee Shelby Earl Tells Us What It's Like To Quit Work And Make Music Full-Time

$

Shelby Earl wasn't always a professional singer and songwriter.

Earl began a stint as an Amazon employee in late 2007 as an Associate Vendor Manager in the company's music department, which saw her co-managing record label accounts with the company. But this came to an end in 2009 when she decided to strike it out on her own as a full-time musician.

Since then, she's been featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition and had her album, Swift Arrows, in the number one spot on Amazon’s "Movers & Shakers" chart for two days.

She took the time to answer a few questions for us on Amazon, her music career, and living the good life.

BUSINESS INSIDER: What did you do at Amazon?

SHELBY EARL: We worked closely with labels to cook up promotional plans around their various releases throughout the year. You know all those little blurbs on the Amazon site? The boxes of editorial content that promote products? Well, people write those, and I was one such person.

I enjoyed certain aspects of the job where music and writing were involved, and I loved working with the labels (I had come to Amazon from a record label and I related the label folks best), but Amazon’s corporate culture ultimately wasn’t a good fit for me. Frankly, I don’t see that company as a good fit for "creatives" in general. It is much better suited to analytical types who enjoy data and metrics.

That said, I’m thankful for the experience because had I still been at a label, or in another music industry job I enjoyed, I may never have taken the leap to become a full-time musician.

BI: When did you start playing music? Did it come naturally or was it a lot of work?

SE: I started singing when I was very young. And from the age of about three on, I told everyone who would listen that I was going to be "a singer." According to my mom there wasn’t a whole lot of natural talent to speak of in those early years, but what I did have a lot of was passion and determination. I started studying with a voice coach at the age of 11 and didn’t stop until just a few years ago. Now I just go in once in a while for "maintenance."

I dabbled with the guitar a little throughout the years too, but I was never as serious about it as I was about singing. For years I played in bands as the "lead singer" and then finally, in my early 30s, the guitar started to click for me. At the same time, I was cultivating a burgeoning interest in songwriting.  These two newfound passions – songwriting and guitar playing — began to feed each other quite nicely and I became consumed with the process of becoming a singer-songwriter.

BI: Was there anything specific that got you thinking about quitting Amazon in favor of music?

SE: There were many moments that led up to me quitting my job. As I mentioned, I had started becoming quite consumed with songwriting. So much so that I was thinking about songs all the time, jotting down lyrics in staff meetings, etc.

But the big revelatory moment happened one day when I was sitting at my desk, miserable, staring at a spreadsheet, perplexed as to how my life had come to look like this, and I suddenly realized no one was making me be there. No one was making me live the life I was living. And if I wanted, I could just change it. It wasn’t that my job was too hard or that I wanted to give up, it was that I realized I could live a much bigger, more meaningful life than I was currently living.

I’d always dreamed of my life being global — of doing work that took me around the world — where I would meet and interact with all kinds of people (I love people and I love to travel). And I dreamed of making something that mattered. But instead my life felt like it was shrinking quickly and I couldn’t see the meaning in the work I was doing. It was in that moment of clarity that I knew it was time for a big change.

BI: What was the thought process like leading up to your resignation from the company? Did people think you were brave/stupid/smart to quit?

SE: People are often inspired by my story and they love to tell me they’re going to quit their jobs too. I always tell them A.) not to blame me if it doesn’t go well (heh), and B.) to make sure they have an exit plan! That exit plan for me involved waiting to give notice until a certain amount of my stocks had vested (this money became my recording budget), and saving as much money as I could so I had a little cushion when I finally leapt.

I also made sure I had my home office all set up and studio time booked for the week after I left Amazon so I wouldn’t go too long without focus and structure. Much to my surprise, most people in my life, my parents included, totally celebrated my decision to leave and have been rooting for me ever since. I’m eternally grateful for that support, and for people’s continued encouragement through the ups and downs of life as independent artist.

BI: What were the first weeks of "unemployed musician" like?

SE: [They were] blissful! I finally got to focus on music-making and recording full-time, which was a lifestyle I’d been dreaming of for a very long time. However, things got challenging about six months in, when my financial cushion had dwindled and I had to face the reality of no monthly paycheck coming in. But as I’ve told people many times, I’d never been more broke and I’d never been happier in my whole life. And from where I stand now, this sense of fulfillment is worth every moment of struggle.

BI: Did working at Amazon somehow prepare you for life as a touring musician?

SE: I’m not sure working at Amazon necessarily prepared me for touring life, but working in the music industry proper (I’d been a booking agent, event manager and radio promotions person) certainly did. I think I work well with my industry counterparts because I understand their perspective. I think the knowledge and experience I gained in my industry years has served me quite well as an independent artist. No one will ever accuse me of being a musician who doesn’t get "the business side of things."

BI: Does Amazon carry your music?

SE: They sure do! And they’ve been quite supportive of both of my albums. They’ve done song of the day features, free downloads, "artist to watch" features, and they’ve listed both of my albums on various editorial "best of" lists. I’m very grateful for their support. And it’s amazing to see how, yet again, my time spent there was not in vain.

Shelby Earl's music and merchandise is available on her site. She is currently on tour.

“I’m Jimmy Fallon and I’ll be your host… for now,” said the new host of “The Tonight Show” to open his first episode Monday.

Fallon's debut episode marked the first time in 48 years that "The Tonight Show" was broadcast from New York. The new host also opened by thanking past “Tonight Show” hosts: “Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno.”

Fallon then went on to tell viewers about himself, saying he is a happily married 39-year-old from a small town in New York.

The new host joked, "If you would have told me as a kid that I was going to graduate high school and go on to be on 'Saturday Night Live' and then eventually be the host of 'The Tonight Show,' I would have said, 'I graduated high school?!'"

After saying he is a "proud, proud dad" to six-month old daughter, Winnie, Fallon introduced his own parents, who were in the audience. Fallon apologized for not being able to get them better seats.

Here's What The 'Transformers 4' Dinobots Will Look Like

The next "Transformers" movie is out this June.

The fourth installment in the franchise, "Transformers: Age of Extinction," will star Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, a mechanic who gets involved with the "robots in disguise."

One of the most anticipated aspects of the sequel will be the introduction of "dinobots" — robots that transform into dinosaurs. Earlier this month, we saw a brief look at the dinos when Paramount released the first trailer for the movie during the Super Bowl.

Now, we have a better look at what to expect on screen.

Monday, we were invited to check out Hasbro's lineup of toys for the year at the 2014 Toy Fair. Among the new Transformers were a bunch of the dinobots you'll see in the film.

These will definitely be among the toys your kids will want this year. Check them out below.

Grimlock
This is the T-Rex you see Optimus Prime on in the trailer.

We got a kick out of seeing Hasbro re-enact the scene from the trailer. The cool thing about this larger dinobot was that he easily transformed in one swift action from this ...

Of course, the movie won't only feature Dinobots.

Hound, in green, transforms into a military vehicle.

He'll return in the new movie.bumblebee transformers 4Lockdown (top left) and Crosshairs (green, top right) can be seen here. Grimlock action figures were everywhere we looked (orange).lockdown transformers 4 age of extinctionHere's another photo of a lot of the figures together. The Transformers for the younger age group switch quickly and effortlessly from machine to vehicle (or robot to dino and back). That's good news for parents who otherwise have to try and figure out how to make the change on their own. autobot hound strafe transformers 4 age of extinctionCool thing about this photo: The transformer in the center, Drift, turns into a Bugatti. We hope Michael Bay doesn't blow him up.bumblebee autobot transformers 4 age of extinctionAnd, of course, here's Optimus Prime.optimus prime transformers 4 age of extinction toys

Among all the Transformers we spotted, we also came across one that looks like a big spoiler for the film. If you're big on "Transformers" you may have spotted him above.

Don't scroll anymore if you don't want spoilers.

Here's who you should expect to be the villain in "Age of Extinction":

Galvatron
If you remember the villain from the last series, Megatron, Galvatron is usually known as a bigger, badder version of him reborn.

CBS CEO Admits Streaming TV Service Aereo Isn't A Huge Threat Even Though The Two Companies Are Headed For A Supreme Court Battle

Les Moonves CEO CBS Corp

Broadcast networks have been at war with live TV streaming service Aereo since 2012, but CBS CEO Leslie Moonves admitted to investors and analysts last week during the company's Q4 earnings call that he doesn't consider the startup a threat.

Deadline reports that Moonves said "we’re not going to be financially handicapped at all” if Aereo wins in an upcoming case headed to the Supreme Court. In fact, Moonves said CBS has the option to create its own Aereo-like service.

Networks are suing Aereo because they say the startup doesn't have the right to rebroadcast their signals over the Internet. Aereo provides each of its customers with a tiny antenna that pulls in over the air programming from networks like NBC, CBS, and ABC and beams them over the Internet to computers, smartphones, and tablets. It costs $8 per month and is only available in a handful of U.S. cities.

In the past, network executives have threatened to stop broadcasting over the air for free if Aereo is allowed to continue.

The case has made its way to the Supreme Court. Hearings begin April 22.

"There are a lot of presidents who we don't know much about so we sent a camera crew out to Hollywood Boulevard today to tell people that Franklin Delano Roosevelt died," Kimmel explained of his latest stunt.

The only problem? FDR was born in 1882 and died in 1945.

2 Charts That Show The Astronomical Success Of 'The LEGO Movie'

the lego movie

"The LEGO Movie" had an absolutely amazing second weekend at the box office.

Over the course of three days it brought in $50 million. In four days? $63 million

That's huge for a movie that brought in $69.1 million in its opening weekend. Why?

I can't remember the last time a movie dropped only about 8% in ticket sales in its second week. And, I'm not just talking about an animated film, I'm talking about any movie in general. "Avatar" came close in 2009. Typically, a movie will drop 20%-30%. If it's a really high-performing film a 15%-20% drop is more likely.

To illustrate the point, here are two charts showing just how big "The LEGO Movie" is at theaters.

The film comes fifth among animated pictures for second-largest weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo. Accounting for its four-day holiday weekend haul of $63 million puts it ahead of 2010’s “Toy Story 3.” It’s also worth noting that three of those movies are part of well-established animated franchises while “The Incredibles” has the Pixar stamp attached to it.

box office second weekends

Here’s another look at the five animated movies that have had huge second weekends at the box office. Everything but “The LEGO Movie” has seen far steeper drops in week two.

animated movies with second largest box office weekend

What does all this mean? "The LEGO Movie" has great staying power at theaters. In two weeks, it has already made $195 million worldwide. That's good news for Warner Bros. since they're already working on a sequel.

'Endless Love' Author Trashes Movie Remake As 'Mangled Beyond Recognition'

Endless Love

The book "Endless Love" was a bestseller by two-time National Book Award finalist Scott Spencer in 1979.

In 1981, the book was adapted into a Brooke Shields romantic drama that became a moderate box-office success.

This Valentine's Day, a reboot of the film — starring Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde  hit theaters and brought in just $15 million opening weekend on an estimated $20 million budget. It came in fifth at the box office and scored a measly 15% on RottenTomatoes.

But audiences aren't the only ones who don't love the latest remake, original author Scott Spencer blasted the film to The Hollywood Reporter after watching just the below film trailer.

I presume you have had the experience of having something you said repeated to a third party, attributed to you but mangled beyond recognition. I think it’s a common phenomenon, especially when relationships are unraveling – and one ends up sounding a bit hysterical as one insists, "But that’s not what I said! I never said that! I would NEVER EVER say that!"

This is why it’s a comfort to write down what you want to last.

Endless Love was botched – misquoted, as it were – once in 1981, when Franco Zeffirelli tried to make a movie out of it, and it seems as if it has been even more egregiously and ridiculously misunderstood in the movie Universal Pictures is releasing. (I gave up control of the movie rights to my novel in 1980.) I had brief contact with the first filmmakers who tried to adapt my novel, and I had no contact whatsoever with the second wave.

Here's What Jimmy Fallon's Late Night Competition Had To Say About His 'Tonight Show' Debut

Jay Leno Jimmy Fallon

Jimmy Fallon's colleagues David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O'Brien, Craig Ferguson, and Seth Meyers were among the 11.3 million viewers who tuned in to watch Fallon take the reigns as host of "The Tonight Show" on Monday.

But Fallon's competition was fairly friendly when it came to their well-wishes and critiques of the premiere episode.

Jay Leno:

Prior to Monday's debut, Leno said of his "Tonight Show" successor: "I think he's probably the closest to Johnny [Carson] of anybody else in late night. When I watch him do, you know, a duet with Justin Timberlake or something of that nature I go, 'Well, I can't do that. I mean, I write jokes.'"

David Letterman:

During Monday's "Late Show" monologue, Letterman acknowledged the absence of his longtime late night rival, Jay Leno, by joking, "First thing this morning, I get a call from my mom. She says 'David, did something happen to Jay?' What am I gonna do?"

Letterman expressed his respect for Leno earlier this month when he said, "He was a host on 'The Tonight Show' for 22 years and now retiring. Congratulations on a wonderful run."

Craig Ferguson:

The CBS "Late Late Show" host joked during Monday's President's Day monologue that the former presidents live together in a clubhouse — as do all of the late-night hosts.

"I haven't seen Leno recently, though," Ferguson continued. "Although, one of his cars is still in the driveway, so maybe he's coming back."

When later discussing Bob Costas' return to host NBC's Olympics coverage, Ferguson joked, "I'm surprised NBC let him back. Usually when they replace a host, they stick with their decision"  referring to the Conan-Leno "Tonight Show" conflict of 2010.

Here's The Gigantic 'House Of Cards' Spoiler That Everyone Is Talking About [WARNING: MASSIVE SPOILERS]

House of Cards

Warning: This piece contains major spoilers. If you have not yet watched the first episode of the second season of "House of Cards," do NOT read on.

"Did you think I'd forgotten you?" Vice President Frank Underwood says directly to the viewer at the end of Episode 1 of the second season of the Netflix hit "House of Cards."

"Perhaps you hoped I had. Don't waste a breath mourning Ms. Barnes — every kitten grows up to be a cat. They seem so harmless at first — small, quiet, lapping up their saucer of milk. But once their claws get long enough, they draw blood — sometimes, from the hands that feeds them. For those of us climbing to the top of the food chain, there can be no mercy. There is but one rule — hunt, or be hunted."

He smiles.

"Welcome back."

Underwood has just killed Zoe Barnes, the enthusiastic, over-her-head journalist who served as one of the main protagonists in Season 1 of the show. Just like that, Zoe Barnes — who ended up asking one question too many — is gone.

It happens little more than a half-hour into the new season. Underwood meets Barnes in a Metro station, where he is wearing a fedora and glasses to mask his appearance. Barnes asks him if she had unknowingly participated in the murder of Peter Russo. Indeed, she helped contribute — it was Underwood who murdered Russo at the end of Season 1, making it appear as if the troubled former congressman had committed suicide.

But Underwood does not reveal this fact.

"Jesus," he says, dismissively.

"I want to believe you, Francis—" Barnes starts, chasing him back behind a barrier. But before she can finish her thought, Underwood is there, waiting for her, ready to push her in front of an oncoming train. It's his second cold-blooded murder in a pretty short span.

Those who have seen the British version of "House of Cards" weren't necessarily surprised by this. Francis Urquhart, the "Underwood" character, confesses to a murder in front of the reporter, then throws her off the roof.

Still, it was a daring move for a television series — albeit one that can break a lot of the traditional boundaries because of its unusual, release-all-13-episodes-at-once formula. Mara is popular, and Zoe Barnes was an important — albeit divisive — character.

But her death makes it clear — Frank is in charge, and he'll do anything necessary to get someone out of his way.

A Post On Anonymous App Whisper Claims Gwyneth Paltrow Is Cheating On Her Husband, And None Of Its Users Care

Whisper, an anonymous app that lets users share secrets, had a post today claiming actress Gwyneth Paltrow is cheating on her husband with entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn.

The Whisper post started to get a lot of attention after the app's new editor in chief and Gawker's former viral news star Neetzan Zimmerman tweeted it earlier today:

Zimmerman's tweet refers to Vanity Fair's decision to kill a profile about Paltrow last year.

If the Whisper post is true, it marks the first time someone has used the app to break national news, and it draws questions about the future of the app and community-journalism. On the other hand, since users post anonymously to Whisper, there's no way to verify whether or not the post is true. The app has traditionally been used for making confessions about one's self, not gossip about other people. The Paltrow post makes Whisper more like Secret and other anonymous apps which let users post recklessly about others. Traditionally, those companies have all been shut down from lawsuits, libel, and defamation.

Whisper CEO Michael Heyward told Business Insider that while the app has always supported discussions around celebrities, it doesn't support ill-intentioned rumor mongering. Whisper's editors can remove posts that might be defamatory.

"We have, (and always will have) a zero tolerance policy towards bullying and personal defamation on Whisper," he said. "That said, we have always allowed honest and open discussion as it relates to public figures or other entities in the public domain. Our policies around moderation will never change and are in place to make sure that no user ever feels hurt by the actions of another user on the service."

Whisper users weren't impressed with the rumor about Paltrow. Most users responded with, "who cares?"

frank house of cards

The country of China, including some of its top leaders, can't get enough of the Netflix drama "House of Cards," The Washington Post's William Wan reports.

On Sohu, the Chinese equivalent of Netflix, "House of Cards" has been the No. 1-streamed show since the debut of Season 2 last Friday. Streams of both seasons top Sohu's rankings, ahead of "The Big Bang Theory."

And according to Sohu (via the Post), most of China's 24.5 million views of Season 1 of House of Cards came from government-sector employees and residents of Beijing. The state-run Xinhua News Agency wrote last week that "a large number of government and enterprise executives and opinion leaders also strongly recommend" the show.

One top government official who is reportedly a huge fan of the show is Wang Qishan, the Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and considered one of the top seven leaders in China.

From the Post:

Wang Qishan, one of the seven most powerful leaders in China, is said to be particularly captivated, according to reports in Chinese media and officials with ties to his department, who asked to speak anonymously.

As head of China’s disciplinary committee, Wang is charged with keeping cadres in line and instilling discipline throughout party ranks — a portfolio somewhat similar to that of Underwood, the majority whip in “House of Cards.”

Much of the second season of "House of Cards" revolves around China-heavy plot lines, featuring tension among Vice President Frank Underwood, President Garrett Walker, the Chinese government, and a corrupt Chinese businessman trying to influence the White House.

"Zero Point" is the first 3D, 360-degree movie designed to take advantage of the Oculus Rift. You'll be able to have a 360-degree view of your surroundings, so you feel like you're actually part of the action. In each scene, you will be able to turn your head around and get a full view of various environments.

"Zero Point" profiles innovators in virtual reality and takes viewers through a series of scenarios, ranging from last year's Electronics Entertainment Expo to military training at Camp Pendleton.

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset intended for 3D gaming, but the production company behind this movie, Condition One, wants to create ways for people to have an immersive experience watching films on the device.

Owners of Oculus Rift developer kits will have access to the movie later this year. The trailer is password protected for now but here's the access code you need to watch it: zeropoint.

It's no secret that Hollywood is filled with attractive people.

But some of today's top actors and actresses are so "ridiculously good looking," as Zoolander would say, that before they were on screen, they were walking catwalks or posing for major brands in magazines and commercials.

While a surprising number of Hollywood stars got their start as Abercrombie & Fitch models, others honed their chops in couture.

Can you recognize these catwalk-turned-Hollywood stars?

By the age of 10, Katherine Heigl was working with Wilhelmina Models posing on the covers of magazines and for Sears and Lord & Taylor catalogs.

A 14-year-old Heigl hit Hollywood in 1992, going on to star in "Grey's Anatomy," "27 Dresses," and "The Ugly Truth."

A 25-year-old Josh Duhamel was named Male Model of the Year at an International Model and Talent Association competition in 1997.

Seth Green Explains Why Ben Affleck Will Be A Horrible Batman

Seth Green is definitely not sold on Ben Affleck playing the new Batman.

While on “Larry King Now" he and King began discussing the upcoming “Batman / Superman” in 2016.

As Green went through the on-screen evolution of the Caped Crusader from a comical character (Adam West) to a darker, more serious hero (Christian Bale), he reasoned why Affleck may not be the right man to fill Batman's shoes next.

According to Green, the actor may not be old or scary enough for Henry Cavill's Superman. For the record, Affleck is 41. Cavill is 30.

“If this movie is meant to be the idealistic alien, humans-before-all-else Superman, and this is supposed to be the grizzled, weathered Batman who’s been living in Gotham, fighting crime himself for 10 years, you need a guy who’s older.”

“You need a guy who’s got more weight, and you need a guy that a Henry Cavill Superman is gonna be actually scared of. You need to remember that Batman is just a dude, he’s got no powers. So the fact that Superman is scared of him says something about the gravitas that he carries, and it’s not just because he’s willing to kill, it’s because he’s scary.”

When King brings up that Affleck is a good actor, Green retorts, “Yes, but there is only so much you can act a role before people are or are not going to believe you in that role.”

The untitled Batman/Superman movie was recently pushed back to summer 2016.
