Kanye West's Failed Guerrilla Marketing Ploy Is Angering Texans

Kanye West

Kanye West tried to hype up his latest single "New Slaves" by projecting the music video onto The Alamo for fans to watch on Sunday.

But the marketing ploy was a total bust.

After West posted about the screening on his website and tweeted about it to his over 9.5 million followers, hundreds of people gathered in front of the historic Texas site for the screening.

But because no permit for the projection had been issued, the police department put a kibosh on West's grand plan.

"Disappointed fans headed home around midnight as the non-event progressed," reports the NY Post.

But The Alamo wasn't the only Texas location that didn't work out.

Two other screenings were supposed to take place in the Houston area Sunday, but were shut down by cops before getting off the ground, according to the Houston Chronicle

Vine user Joey Guerra posted a video about the non-event:

Here's what the screening would have been like:

Astonishing Charles Bronson Ad From Japan Puts Old Spice Guy To Shame

Charles Bronson in Mandom Ad

Facial hair, ripped abs, horseback riding, gunplay.

A new ad for Old Spice?

Not exactly.

It's an old commercial for the Japanese men's toiletry brand "Mandom" which — unlike Old Spice — is not a parody.

The ad in question stars the late Charles Bronson, who starred in the "Death Wish" franchise.

The seventies mega-hunk channels several leading men in the two-minute epic: Humphrey Bogart in "Play It Again Sam", Sean Connery in just about any Bond film, and himself in many of his tough-guy, vigilante roles.

Mandom recruited Bronson to promote the fragrance line after his film, "Once Upon A Time In The West" became a hit in Japan. He was perceived as the quintessential 'Western Man.'

The actor was paid $100,000 to star in the commercial which took Japanese director, Nobuhiko Ohbayashi, four days to shoot. Apparently, the sum exceeded the fees Bronson made for his memorable roles in both "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape" together.

The ad turned out to be as successful in Japan as Bronson's films. Within weeks of airing the commercial, Mandom become the No.1 selling male toiletry brand in the country.

Larry Ellison's Son Produced The New 'Star Trek' Movie And He's Got More Blockbusters On Tap

As if fabulously wealthy Oracle CEO Larry Ellison needs more in his life to brag about, his kids are having spectacular success as Hollywood moguls.

They each own their own movie production companies. David Ellison's is Skydance Productions and Megan Ellison's is Annapurna Pictures.

This isn't just a hobby for either one.

David has quickly become one of the most powerful Hollywood producers around. His latest movie is the blockbuster "Star Trek Into Darkness" (which is awesome, by the way).

He's also the financier behind two more summer blockbusters: "World War Z" (humans vs. zombies) and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" (more action).

He's also promised to give us "Mission: Impossible 5" and "Top Gun 2" at some point.

Yeah, he really likes sequels.

But he's also the guy behind True Grit (2010), The Guilt Trip (2012) and Jack Reacher (2012).

Megan EllisonHis sister, and Ellison's only other child, is no slouch in the movie-producing business either. She's behind  "Zero Dark Thirty" and the new Spike Jonze film "Her" among other soon-to-be-released films.

She worked with David on "True Grit," too, and the two of them have plans to make a "Terminator 5" movie at some point.

Courtney Love is no stranger to bad press, Twitter freak outsdrug use and rehab — but even she is telling Amanda Bynes to get it together.

On Tuesday, Love tweeted to her nearly 180,000 followers:

Bynes, an avid Tweeter, clearly didn't like that and responded by writing:

Even comedian Joel McHale got involved, making light of the entire pot-calling-the-kettle-black situation:

Bynes' latest "ugly" tweet comes after she wrote earlier today of the cop she claims sexually harrassd her: "His punishment will be being the cop who sexually harassed someone who would never find him handsome enough to be my boyfriend. That's worse than any time in jail."

On Monday, Bynes attacked Rihanna over Twitter, writing "Chris Brown beat you because you’re not pretty enough."

Bynes later denied she wrote the tweets, writing that they were "mocked up tweets about me bashing Rihanna."

Kate Upton for Victoria's Secret

She's "too obvious," "too blonde" and has the "kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy."

That's what Victoria's Secret casting director Sophia Neophitou, said of Kate Upton in an interview with the New York Times last year, claiming the underwear brand "would never use [her]."

This year, however, the lingerie company seems to have changed its tune regarding the conventionally appealing swimsuit star and have put Upton in its latest catalog. She models the brand's best-selling black Body bra.

It is not surprising that Victoria's Secret have "had to rethink their opinion on the model. After all, as the New York Post reports, Upton's popularity has tripled over the past year.

The lingerie giant previously hired Upton to model the brand's pajamas in 2011. Take a look below.

New Documentary Follows The Everyday Lives Of 9 Lesbian Porn Stars

Porn star i love your work

Porn stars are used to being viewed in, shall we say, compromising positions — but filmmaker Jonathan Harris is exposing the other side of adult film stars' worlds: their more mundane everyday lives.

"I think about their lives, what they had for breakfast, what their apartment might look like, where they get their groceries," Harris, 33, explained to Slate of his new interactive film titled "I Love Your Work."

The project follows nine young women who make lesbian porn and "consists of 2,202 10-second video clips, taken at five-minute intervals over 10 consecutive days," states the film's website.

But for $10, the documentary lets viewers get to know the women even more intimately, according to the site: "There is an interactive environment for exploring this material (around six hours of footage). It is limited to just 10 viewers per day, and tickets cost $10 each."

We didn't pay the $10 to see what goes on after the pay wall, but we did watch the trailer, in which the women explain why they chose to become adult film stars. Here are some of the reasons:

  • "I want to feel like I've experienced being incredibly sexual in what is supposed to be a shameful situation  but not feeling shamed."
  • "Getting paid to have sex with beautiful women is one of those job descriptions you just can't say no to."
  • "It's an easy way to be famous, and Americans are seeking fame."
  • "The pornography that I make is true and authentic to my sexuality. It's not faking it or putting on a show."
  • "My parents cut me off so I had no money. Because I'm gay."

Harris says creating the film made him see a new side of porn and Americans' obsession with it:

"When I see porn now, I see real people performing. The power of pornographic fantasies is diminished for me now, because I understand the role of makeup and lighting and camera angles to convey a certain image that usually has very little to do with reality. And I think this is ultimately a really humanizing thing to realize. It makes me feel better about my own body, and about the bodies of other people in my life. I can still appreciate the fantasies, but they have less control over me now."

Watch the trailer for the project below. We're warning you: NSFW.

We Took The New Lexus Sports Sedan Around The Track From 'Talladega Nights' [VIDEO]

Lexus is getting ready to introduce the latest generation of its IS sports sedans, and the lineup, including the IS250 and IS350, looks great.

The star of the show is the IS350 F Sport — a car that took the crown in Car and Driver's recent Sports Sedan Comparo issue. The "delightfully capable" Lexus even defeated the 328i, tarnishing BMW's "nearly unblemished comparison-test record."

Last week, I headed down to North Carolina's Rockingham Speedway — the scene of NASCAR races and the filming of Will Ferrell's "Talladega Nights" — to take the F Sport around the track and see if I agreed with Car and Driver.

The answer is a resounding yes.

On straightaways, the banked track, and tight turns, the IS350 F Sport is a ton of fun to drive and makes you feel like a pro — even when you make a brief run through some grass, like I did.

News Corp. Newspaper Boss Vows 'Relentless Cost-Cutting In Pursuit Of Profits'

$

Rupert Murdoch

(Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch tried to convince Wall Street on Tuesday that there is still money to be made in newspapers, reminding investors that he had defied skeptics over the past 60 years to build one of the world's biggest media empires.

As News Corp prepares to separate its publishing business from its entertainment assets, Murdoch said that while some brands face individual challenges, as a whole the publishing portfolio is "undervalued and underdeveloped."

"I am not saying I didn't make many mistakes along the way —even some spectacular ones," Murdoch said at a meeting in Manhattan to sell investors on the new publishing company.

"You may be wondering why I want to do it all over again," the 82-year-old media mogul said. "The simple answer is: there is opportunity everywhere."

The new publishing company, which will retain the News Corp name, officially kicks off on June 28 with properties such as: The Wall Street JournalDow Jones NewswiresThe Times of London, Australian pay-TV services, book publisher HarperCollins and fledgling education unit, Amplify.

The spin-off comes as newspapers face plunging advertising revenue and readers who increasingly prefer to get news for free on their smartphones and tablets. Shares of newspaper companies - once considered blue-chip investments - have tumbled over the past decade as investors fear a permanent drain in ad sales.

Against this backdrop, the publishing company's new chief executive, Robert Thomson, said there will be "relentless" cost cuts in store for the business. He gave no specifics.

News Corp executives took pains to note almost half of the publishing company's revenue comes from sources other than advertising. One revenue source is Dow Jones, which sells news and information to financial institutions and competes with Thomson Reuters Corp and Bloomberg LP.

Dow Jones CEO Lex Fenwick highlighted the introduction of a new platform, code-named DJ X. He emphasized one product, one price and one standard contract.

"If we can take a little more of institutional spend with DJ X - if we deliver that product with real value, there's a real opportunity to increase our market share," he said.

Fenwick also said Dow Jones is working on a messaging platform to compete with Bloomberg's vaunted product.

CLEAN BALANCE SHEET

Thomson, a close confident of Murdoch, ensured the new publishing company would start out with a clean balance sheet, no debt and $2 billion in cash to buffer operations and attract investors. News Corp intends to pay a dividend, but the board has yet to determine the details. It said it has authorized a share buyback of $500 million.

Still, analysts wanted to know if Murdoch intended to go shopping with his coffer of cash especially where newspapers assets are concerned - including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune that are on the market.

Murdoch said if the "price is right" News Corp could be interested in newspapers. But he said that cross-ownership rules that prevent companies from owning top TV stations and newspapers in the same market made it "pretty unlikely."

News Corp said last Friday that it would write down the value of its Australian and U.S. publishing assets by up to $1.4 billion, potentially wiping out the company's estimated profit for the quarter ending June 30.

Thomson said the company will have "a permanent start-up sensibility." He added, "We will be relentless in our cost-cutting and in our pursuit of profits."

The new News Corp also unveiled its logo - written in a cursive script based on the handwriting of Murdoch and his father, Keith, whose Australian newspapers were the seeds of the media empire.

The Fox network, the movie studio and a set of lucrative cable properties will become a separately traded company called 21st Century Fox.

"I have been given an extraordinary opportunity most people never get in their lifetime: the chance to do it all over again," said Murdoch.

Netflix Stock Tanks As Word Spreads That Its Arrested Development Reboot Isn't Very Good

arrested development

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The hoopla surrounding the return of "Arrested Development" on Netflix's Internet video service has quickly dissolved into a letdown on Wall Street.

Netflix's stock fell by more than 6 percent Tuesday as investors reacted to critics' mixed reviews over the weekend of the first new "Arrested Development" episodes since Fox canceled the TV series seven years ago. The shares shed $14.55 to close at $214.19, marking the biggest one-day drop in the stock in nearly six months.

IDC analyst Greg Ireland characterized Tuesday's sell-off as an overreaction, given that it's far too early to know whether Netflix's latest high-profile foray into original programming will turn out to be a hit or a flop for the company. That determination probably won't be made until late July, when Netflix Inc. typically announces the number of subscribers it added during the April-June period.

Netflix declined Tuesday to disclose any information about how many and how much subscribers have watched "Arrested Development" since all 15 new episodes were released at once early Sunday morning. The mass debut made it possible for Netflix's 29.2 million U.S. subscribers to watch as many episodes as they wanted during the holiday weekend as part of their $8-a-month subscription fee. Many people opted to view them all at once rather than space them out over weeks or months.

"Arrested Development" is the third original series to debut on Netflix this year, but it has attracted far more attention than the others because of its built-in fan base and a popular cast, which includes Jason Bateman and Michael Cera.

Netflix also raised hopes for "Arrested Development" by predicting the series could help add as many as 880,000 U.S. subscribers to the online video service during the three months ending in June. That would be 350,000 more subscribers than the service gained during the same stretch last year. It's traditionally a sluggish period for the company because more people are on vacation and doing things outdoors instead of spending a lot of time watching video.

The Los Gatos, Calif., company didn't make any of the new "Arrested Development" episodes available for advance viewing. That made it impossible to know ahead of time whether the series retained the same quirky humor and appeal that won the show critical acclaim, Emmy awards and a devoted fan base during its three-year run on Fox and its subsequent distribution on Internet video services such as Netflix.

Once they saw the resurrected "Arrested Development," some influential critics panned it as a disappointment. The New York Times was particularly harsh, asserting that Netflix had "killed" the series. Variety was only slightly kinder in describing the revival as "an interesting idea that was more exciting on paper."

But many other critics hailed the new episodes for being just as good, if not better, than the show's original incarnation. "The comedic payout begins to multiply with each succeeding episode," asserted The Hollywood Reporter's Tim Goodman, who recommended watching the new season at least twice to get all the jokes. Other reviewers in daily newspapers scattered across the country also praised the series.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, "Arrested Development" had received a 72 rating on a scale of 100, based on 10 professional reviews analyzed by Metacritic.com. That compared with a rating of 76 for the political drama "House of Cards" and 46 for the thriller "Hemlock Grove," the other Netflix-financed series released on the service this year. Metacritic considers a rating of 61 to 80 to be signifying "generally favorable reviews."

The opinions of the critics ultimately won't matter if Netflix's subscribers are enjoying the new episodes of "Arrested Development," Janney Montgomery Scott analyst Tony Wible said.

The show becomes "almost like a marketing vehicle for Netflix" as satisfied customers keep their subscriptions and help create a buzz that attracts new subscribers, Wible said.

Just a whiff of negative sentiment about "Arrested Development" was enough to spook Wall Street. Many investors have been betting that the series will accelerate Netflix's subscriber growth and provide further validation of the company's decision to spend about $200 million annually on original programming in an effort to make its Internet video service as compelling as any broadcast or cable TV network.

The buildup to "Arrested Development" helped Netflix's stock recover from a backlash to price increases and proposed service changes announced nearly two years ago. The stock plummeted from nearly $305 in July 2011 to below $53 last August. Even with Tuesday's sharp decline, Netflix's stock has more than doubled in value so far this year.

The run-up has left investors paying about $144 for every $1 in Netflix's projected earnings this year compared with $23 for every $1 in anticipated earnings for Google, the Internet's most powerful company. Netflix's lofty valuation means the slightest stumble can cause many investors to dump their shares, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said.

"It's a stock that is priced for perfection," he said.

A sampling of traffic Sunday indicated that "Arrested Development" got off to a positive start, despite the misgivings of some critics.

Procera Networks, which provides Internet traffic management for broadband providers, estimated that about one-third of the Netflix subscribers it monitored watched at least one episode of "Arrested Development." Procera monitors traffic for several major broadband providers, though it doesn't identify which ones. The traffic for "Arrested Development" was far better than the 11 percent of Netflix subscribers who watched at least one episode of "House of Cards" during its debut weekend in February, according to Procera.

Netflix credited the popularity of "House of Cards" for helping its service add 2 million U.S. subscribers during the first three months of this year, about 250,000 more than the same time last year.

About 10 percent of the Netflix subscribers monitored by Procera finished the entire season of "Arrested Development" on Sunday.

"I would call that a numbers success, regardless of critical acclaim," Cam Cullen, Procera's vice president of global marketing, wrote Tuesday in a blog post.

Victoria's Secret Used Kate Upton's Old Pictures Without Telling Her And She Is Furious

Kate Upton

Yesterday, we noted how weird it was that Kate Upton would model for Victoria's Secret after the company's casting director had bad-mouthed the model, calling her "too obvious," and looking too much like a "footballer's wife."

Today, the truth surfaced.

In spite of her image being used in the latest Victoria's Secret catalog, Upton has not resurrected her relationship with the lingerie brand. Nor is she becoming its next Angel.

As The New York Post reports, the photo in question was not a recent one. The image of Upton showcasing the brand's Body bra in the catalog was taken during a previous shoot, when Upton was modeling for Victoria's Secret in 2011.

To add insult to injury, a source for the Post confirmed that "VS never gave her a heads-up they were using the pictures now."

"Kate’s not currently contracted to work with Victoria’s Secret," the source added.

Apparently, the blonde bombshell is furious. But it's most likely that she is not entitled to take legal action.

Victoria's Secret probably did a "buyout" of the images they took of the model in 2011, giving the brand unlimited use of the pictures.

That puts VS in the position of being able to criticize Upton at the same time as using her to sell its old stock.

Daft Punk

Daft Punk's highly anticipated new album "Random Access Memories" has officially debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The French duo's first album since 2005 sold 339,000 copies in its first week alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

This means that Daft Punk also has the second-highest selling record of the year, next to Justin Timberlake's "20/20 Experience" — which sold 968,000 copies, according to Billboard.

Beating projected first-week sales of 300,000 units, "Random Access Memories" is the first dance/electronic album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in more than a year.

The album also set a new Spotify record, getting the highest number of streams in its first week in the United States.

Spotify wouldn't release the number of streams, but Daft Punk beat the 8 million streams Mumford & Sons set with "Babel" last year, reports AP.

Daft Punk's last 2005 album "Human After All" debuted at No. 98 and has only sold 125,000 copies to date.

Guess you could say Daft Punk "Got Lucky" with their latest album and new hit single, which has already been streamed on Spotify more than 27 million times:

Hedge Funder Buys Madonna's Cavernous Manhattan Duplex At A Discount

After six months on the market, Madonna has sold her 6,000-square-foot Central Park West pad to hedge fund manager Deepak Narula for well under the $19.995 million asking price, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The apartment had initially been listed for $23.5 million, a figure that was lowered months later. The final sale price was not disclosed, but it was "considerably less" than it was listed for, according to the WSJ.

The apartment, which Madonna had owned for years, has six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and 110 feet of Central Park frontage. It was once featured in a spread in Architectural Digest and we can see why: The simple decor was done by her younger brother Christopher G. Ciccone.

The apartment is in a co-op that was built in 1907, and has 10'3" foot ceilings, a library, and five wood-burning fireplaces.

'Arrested Development' Was Pirated Over 100,000 Times In 24 Hours

buster arrested development

Even if you don't subscribe to Netflix, there are still ways to watch the highly anticipated but poorly reviewed "Arrested Development" reboot.

Around 100,000 people have downloaded episodes of the show within the first 24 hours alone, according to TorrentFreak editor Ernesto, who tracks downloading stats for popular movies and TV shows.

Interestingly, the number is still short of the more than one million downloads HBO's "Game of Thrones" season premiere garnered two months ago in a single day.

"Mad Men," "Revolution" and "Teen Wolf" have all seen higher download numbers, but these shows aren’t available through legal services until the day after they air on TV.

"Arrested Development," however, is available in 36 million households around the world thanks to Netflix.

So when CEO Reed Hastings claimed that "Netflix is winning the fight against piracy with convenience and a low price point," paidcontent.org points out that the lower levels of "Arrested Development" piracy may be an indicator that he’s right.

As for how many people binge-watched the 15-episode reboot, Procera Networks released some interesting numbers showing how people watched "Arrested Development":

  • One DSL network had an astounding 36% of devices watching Netflix on Sunday watch at least part of one episode of Arrested Development. This was over 3x the number we saw for House of Cards (which had 11% viewing).
  • Preliminary numbers show about 10% of viewers made it to Episode 15 on Sunday/Monday (More on this later today as we get data collated).
  • One cable network saw a jump in Netflix traffic peak volumes of 10% on Sunday over the previous Sunday, with a corresponding 8% jump in the number of subscribers accessing Netflix overall. Even though this was a holiday weekend, Arrested Development was a significant contributor to that traffic jump.

Mitch Hurwitz Wrote A Candid Letter To 'Arrested Development' Fans And Haters

"Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz has a handwritten message to the fans who helped bring the show back to life on Netflix: The show is yours now.

Except for copyright issues, having to pay for Netflix, etc.

Hurwitz inked a message not just to fans but also "haters, enemies and arch enemies" of the show—who, he admitted, he probably should have left off the note.

Still, he said he was grateful to those who helped make the 15 new Netflix episodes a reality. And he implored them to watch all seven-and-a-half new hours of the show in order, because they build—"eventually."

arrested development mitch hurwitz letter

Here's the full text of the letter, if you don't like squinting at cursive:

To our friends, fans, supporters, detractors, haters, enemies, and arch enemies,

I'm writing on behalf of everyone who has worked so hard to bring back a show that's very special to us to say thank you for your ardent support of this show with the exception of the haters, detractors etc.

We are all so grateful for another chance to bring these characters to life and could not have dones [sic] so without your consistent effort to ‘spread the word’ about it. Although obviously in the case of the enemies, the words you spread were ‘don’t watch this show!’ You know I probably shouldn’t have even included them in the salutation — but I’m writing this in ink + making all sorts of mistakes. Did you notice the "s" at the end of the word "done"? What's that doing there?

Anyway, it's been our great joy to bring this to you on Netflix where you can access it wherever + whenever you want.

Except, you know, it's really meant to be watched in order.

And you really should watch them all, because they build, and, I'm just saying "eventually." If you can. All 15.

But really, this is yours now.

Except for the obvious copyright issues. And you have to subscribe to Netfix.

So it's not completely yours, I guess.

I'm not going to write in ink anymore.

I love <don't know> you,

So what makes the hilarious couple's bond so unbreakable?

Vulture recently put together a history of their awesome marriage followed by a sit-down interview with the pair about their most memorable dates.

Here are the best "awww" and most hilarious moments:

  • After honing their chops in the Chicago theater scene (where they didn't know each other), Mullally and Offerman first met after they had separately moved to Los Angeles and were both cast in the play "The Berlin Circle."
  • They knew there were sparks when the two were driving and Offerman "put my hand on hers on the gearshift in the middle and that was very electric." But Mullally told him she wasn't about to "get involved" with somebody she was doing a play with.
  • Eventually, the two had their first dinner date -- and Offerman won Mullally over with his overalls. "We sit down and Nick and the sidekick both were wearing overalls. Nick proceeded to tuck his napkin into the bib of his overalls and I just loved it. I was like, Wow, okay that’s a new one. That’s how we had our dinner and he didn’t spill anything on the bib of his overalls."
  • The first time they consummated their relationship was after "a Glen Campbell concert at the Hollywood Bowl that put us in a very lustful mood apparently. We’re both big Glen Campbell fans — it’s one of the things that united us in eternal love."
  • Offerman once played a plumber on "Will & Grace" who got to kiss Mullally's character, Karen Walker.
  • "We fell in love, and before long, we could just tell that we wanted to stay together and make a life together. We wanted to declare to each other and our friends and family that we were in it to win it. It’s important to note that it was not the result of any planning on either of our parts. In fact, we were both looking rather in the other direction when we ran smack into it," Offerman told the AV Club.
  • In 2003, The day before the Emmys, Mullally and Offerman threw a small get-together. Only upon arriving did the twenty guests learn it was actually Nick and Megan's wedding.
  • The couple are ten years apart, and have seen success at the same points in their lives. Mullally told Backstage: "I started "Will & Grace"when I was 39, and Nick started "Parks and Rec" when he was 39. And he's really on the same trajectory; it's all happening with the same timing. It's so funny to see it all happening again. And he went through it with me. We met when I was 41, right before I got nominated for my first Emmy."
  • Now, Offerman says "the conversation will come up where, if I say, 'It would be really fun to have Megan play this part.' And they go, 'Do you think we could get her?!' And I’m like, 'She also thinks that this is a great script.'"
  • Offerman told GQ: "We put our relationship above everything else, including acting jobs, and that's what — I think what can erode a relationship is allowing other things to take precedence over it. We have a rule that we will never do a job that will keep us apart for more than two weeks."
  • The couple are currently co-starring in the comedy "The Kings of Summer."
