How One Jimmy Buffett Song Became A $100 Million Empire

Jimmy Buffet

Jimmy Buffett's 1977 hit 'Margaritaville' is not the world's most popular song — but it is probably the world's most lucrative.

There are now 27 Margaritavilles worldwide, including restaurants, casinos, resorts, bars, ,and stores, where you can buy Margaritaville booze, beachwear, and furniture.

In 2007, Margaritaville Enterprises raked in $100 million in revenue, reports Businessweek.

The song itself wasn't even that popular. It peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard charts and doesn't bring in the kind of royalties reserved for Christmas carols and "Happy Birthday."

But the brand name associated with the song is a gold mine.

"If there is anything on the same scale as a "Margaritaville," it’s not a song —i t’s a motion picture," says an intellectual property expert. "When you’re talking about hundreds of millions of dollars, you have to think in terms of 'Star Wars,' 'Winnie the Pooh,' or 'Transformers' That’s probably in the same order of magnitude."

Kim Kardashian Kanye West paris fashion week

Earlier this month, we brought you celebrities who are becoming increasingly unpopular in the public eye.

Many were wondering why some stars, including Kim Kardashian, didn't make the list.

While she may not be the public's favorite celebrity, there's no doubt she's always a ubiquitous topic of conversation at red carpets and with a baby on the way.

This time around, here are the most unappealing celebs of the past year.

E-Poll did the research based on 1,100 surveys to find out which stars people disliked most in 2012.

17. Kanye West

Last year, Kanye went on two Twitter rants about fashion and whether a derogatory term for females could ever be positive.

He since started dating Kim Kardashian and announced last December at a concert she was pregnant with his child.

16. Kris Jenner

The Kardashian mom tore apart rumors that Khloe wasn't biologically a Kardashian and a divorce from husband Bruce Jenner.

She'll be getting her own talk show in July. It will air for six weeks in a trial run on select Fox-owned stations.

15. Kim Kardashian

Last year, Kardashian compared her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries to having cancer.

Now, she's dating Kanye West and is expecting their first child this summer.

Angelina Jolie's Aunt Dies Of Breast Cancer

Angelina Jolie

(Reuters) - Angelina Jolie's aunt died of breast cancer on Sunday, a hospital spokesman in California said, nearly two weeks after the actress wrote about electing to have a double mastectomy after learning she had inherited a high risk of breast cancer.

Debbie Martin, the younger sister of Jolie's mother, died at age 61 at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, near San Diego.

Her husband, Ron Martin, told Britain's Sky News that his wife had the same defective BRCA1 gene as Jolie.

Jolie's mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of breast cancer in 2007 at age 56.

On May 14, Jolie, the Oscar-winning film star, revealed she had a double mastectomy in an article in the New York Times, saying she hoped her story would inspire other women fighting the life-threatening disease.

Jolie, 37, is raising a family with fellow actor and fiance Brad Pitt. She wrote that she went through with the operation in part to reassure her six children that she would not die young from cancer, as her own mother did.

"We often speak of 'Mommy's mommy,' and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me," wrote Jolie.

"I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a 'faulty' gene."

The actress, who won an Oscar as best supporting actress for her 1999 role in the film "Girl, Interrupted," said she opted for the surgery after her doctors had estimated she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, due to an inherited genetic mutation.

'Arrested Development' Fanatics Will Love The New Season

$

arrested development netflixAn entire fourth series of Arrested Development is out on Netflix. Avoid the temptation to watch them all in one sitting, says Ross Jones.

For the last month or so, a small but vocal section of the internet has been on the horns of a dilemma: to binge or not to binge? After a seven-year wait, the fanatics (‘fans’ doesn’t quite cover it) who have campaigned for the return of their favourite TV sitcom, Arrested Development, were about to get their wish. Fifteen brand new episodes, potentially full of hundreds of new jokes to dissect, all available to watch at exactly the same time on the streaming service Netflix . How to resist watching the whole seven-and-a-half hours at once?

The show’s creator Mitch Hurwitz, perhaps spooked by the mania by now routinely attached to his name, advised against binge-viewing; you’ll get tired and become numb to the jokes, he explained. That Netflix released this fourth series yesterday, Memorial Day weekend in America and the hottest Bank Holiday weekend Britain can remember, no doubt helped his cause. But it probably caused a few domestics, too.

Whether or not it was worth the wait depends largely on how tickled you are by the words ‘Steve Holt!’ or ‘motherboy’. Embracing the impenetrably self-referential joke-within-joke formula that got it taken off the air in the first place, the new series makes no concessions whatsoever to new viewers. Even producer Ron Howard’s opening narration - ‘this is the story of a family whose future was abruptly cancelled’ - is an in-joke.

The Bluth clan are still utterly corrupt, still barely tolerating each other and still trying to out of jail; Rashoman-like, each episode takes place with the same time period from a different Bluth’s perspective. MIchael ( Jason Bateman ), the family straight man and fall guy, is bunking up in a college dorm with son George Michael (Michael Cera) after ploughing all his money into a housing development doomed by its lack of wi-fi. George Snr (Jeffrey Tambor) is mentoring business leaders in his ‘desert sweat lodge’, while trying to build an immigrant-proof wall at the Mexican border. Pickled matriarch Lucille (Jessica Walter) is being tried in maritime court for trying to steal a gay cruise ship. Dozens more plotlines are piled on from there.

Keeping up with them all is near-impossible, and the constant exposition doesn’t help a bit. In a neat visual touch, flashbacks are announced using a ‘swipe’ that apes Netflix’s own rewind function. Kristen Wiig is purse-lipped perfection as a young Lucille, but the endless leaps back and forth in time only confuse matters; it’s often impossible to know where, or when, you are.

What makes Arrested Development perfect for Netflix are the detail-obsessed recurring jokes that have always been this show’s calling card. Now it’s all too easy to pause and appreciate the effort the that went into creating, say, the web page of ‘Haliburton Teen’ (the rendition experts rebranded as a lifestyle brand), or the pages of Altitude in-flight magazine (“the number two most read magazine in coach, three after the safety card”).

Less successful is the new single-character format. Each has great moments (the underrated Bateman chasing a ball of tumbleweed around his living room; Walter’s every racist or homophobic remark or eye-roll), yet one of TV’s greatest comic ensembles has effectively been reunited in order to keep them apart.

And as much as you may want to instantly see more of deluded magican Gob (Will Arnett), hook-handed simpleton Buster (Tony Hale) or closet-case ‘never-nude’ Tobias (David Cross), Hurwitz was right to urge moderation. I managed four episodes in one sitting before fatigue set in; though it gets funnier, I laughed less. Besides, some of us actually like our family.

'The Hangover Part III' Has The Worst Opening Weekend Of The Trilogy — Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

$

fast and furious 6 tank ford escort mustang

"Fast & Furious 6" had no competition from "The Hangover Part III" at the box office this weekend.

That's a surprise considering this was supposed to be the first real box-office showdown of the summer.

While "Fast 6" revved toward $100 million in a three-day weekend, "The Hangover" crew had a tough time grossing little more than $40 million over an extended four-day weekend.

Just how bad is that?

Well, it's $2 million less than the opening weekend of the first "Hangover" film.

Also, "The Great Gatsby," which originally had poor critiques, earned nearly $10 million more than "The Hangover Part III" opening weekend.

Expectations for "The Hangover Part III" were to bring in near $100 million opening weekend.

Instead, it fell pretty flat.

How'd the rest of the box office fare?

Fantastic. Overall, this weekend was the largest Memorial Day Weekend ever with $323 million in ticket sales.

DreamWorks Animation released new film "Epic" and while it didn't quite earn numbers like "The Croods" opening weekend, it performed well and should continue to do so with no competition from other children's films until Disney's "Monsters University" roars into theaters June 21.

Out of the top ten this week is Tyler Perry's "Peeples" which fell seven notches after dropping out of more than 1,500 theaters in week three. The film has earned $8.8 million to date and cost an estimated $15 million to produce.

Here are this weekend's winners and losers at the box office:

10. "Oblivion" rounds out the top ten with $815,000. The Tom Cruise film has earned $266.8 million in six weeks worldwide. Universal was smart to put this film out before the onslaught of all the May films because it's been able to have longevity at theaters.

9. DreamWorks Animation now has two films in the top ten. "The Croods" added another $1.2 million this weekend to its $562 million worldwide haul.

8. Another film that was released in April, "42" earned another $1.25 million. The film, based on the story of Jackie Robinson, has earned $91 million in seven weeks.

7. Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon's "Mud" takes in $1.9 million in its fifth week. Compared to big tentpole films, the Roadside Attraction's movie is playing in 712 theaters.

6. With three new releases out, "The Great Gatsby" falls three spots this week earning $13.7 million. The film just became director Baz Luhrmann's first film to cross $100 million domestically. Overseas, the film is earning a little bit less to bring its total to $200 million worldwide.

5. "Iron Man 3" also moved down three spots earning $19.4 million. Robert Downey Jr.'s return as Tony Stark has now brought in $1.1 billion worldwide.

4. DreamWorks Animation's latest film "Epic" has earned $34.2 million in its opening weekend. The film has already earned $77 million worldwide. The film cost an estimated $100 million to make. Beyoncé, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, and Amanda Seyfried voice characters.

3. "Star Trek Into Darkness" nearly beat out "The Hangover Part III" opening weekend with $38 million. In two weeks, the J.J. Abrams' sequel has earned $249 million worldwide.

2. "The Hangover Part III" opened to a disappointing $42.4 million. That's less than half of what "The Hangover Part II" earned opening weekend two years ago.

1. "Fast & Furious 6" drove off with the box office this weekend earning $98.5 million. That's the largest opening of any film in the franchiseWorldwide, the sixth installment has already earned $275.5 million.

Kelsey Grammer's Tragic Family Life

$
0
0

kelsey grammerMost people are lucky enough to never experience having a loved one taken from them as a result of violence. Kelsey Grammer is not one of those people- his father was shot and killed and his sister was raped and brutally murdered.

You know him best as Dr. Frasier Crane, a psychiatrist originally from the hit television series, Cheers. Dr. Crane was a recurring character in seasons 3 and 4 and went on to become a regular in season 5 until the series finale in season 11. The end of Cheers was not the end for Kelsey Grammer, however. He continued to portray Dr. Frasier Crane as the star of the popular television series, Frasier from 1993 – 2004. Although his professional life has been very successful, he has struggled in his personal life and experienced more than his fair share of tragedies.

Kelsey Grammer’s parents were divorced when he was 2 years old and his  father, Frank Grammer, owned a coffee shop and a bar-and-grill called Greer’s Place. His mother brought Kelsey and Karen back to her parents’ house in New Jersey where they were raised by their mother and grandfather. Unfortunately, his grandfather died when Kelsey was 11.

On April 25, 1968, a man named Arthur B. Niles set fire to Frank Grammer’s car outside the St. Thomas home he shared with his second wife, Elizabeth, and their four children (Betty, John, Billy and Stephen). When Frank Grammer went outside, Niles shot him twice. During the trial, Elizabeth Grammer testified that she pulled her husband’s body from in front of Niles’ car because he had threatened to run over him as well. Kelsey Grammer was only 13 years old at the time of his father’s murder.

Niles was found not guilty of the murder by reason of insanity and spent several decades in a psychiatric ward. In 1994, he was assessed to no longer be a threat to society and was released. In November of 2002, a judge issued a restraining order against Niles which prevented him from seeing his son. In March 2003, Niles went back to prison after pleading guilty to threatening to kill that same judge- no longer a threat indeed.

Seven years later, when Kelsey was 20 years old, his younger sister, 18 year old Karen Grammer, was raped by four men and murdered by Freddie Lee Glenn. Glenn, who was a civilian worker at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs, Colorado began his involvement in a killing spree on June 19, 1975 when he, and two soldiers, including Michael Corbett, decided to assault Daniel Van Lone, a Four Seasons Hotel cook who had just gotten off work at the time they grabbed him. They then took him to a secluded area to kill him. Corbett shot him point blank in the head and the trio made off with a whopping 50 cents from the killing.

A little over a week later, Glenn and Corbett met another Fort Carson soldier to sell some pot to him. Corbett had recently been training with bayonets, and instead of making the sale, decided to stab the soldier with a bayonet, supposedly to see how it felt to stab someone.

On June 30, 1975, Karen Grammer was sitting outside the Red Lobster in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she had just finished her shift as a waitress. Glenn, Corbett and two friends had decided to rob the Red Lobster Karen worked at that night but left the restaurant without any money when they came across Karen. They forced her into their car, stopped to rob a convenience store, then drove her to their apartment where they took turns raping her for about four hours. Afterwards, they put a cloth over her head, promising to take her home. They dumped her in a trailer park instead. According to testimony during the trial, Glenn had taken LSD and when he got out of the car, he stabbed Karen in the back, on her hand (presumably from her trying to shield herself), and the neck.  He then drove away with his accomplices, leaving her for dead.

Karen was made of sterner stuff, though, and managed to crawl to the back porch of a nearby home that had a light on. Unfortunately, no one was at home. Detectives describe a scene where Karen had left bloody handprints and fingerprints where she had tried to ring the doorbell. From her fingerprints, she was inches away from the doorbell when she passed out.  Although, given no one was home, ringing it wouldn’t have done her any good, but of course she didn’t know that. She died on that back porch and was not found until the next day. Police did not know who the girl was for about a week until Kelsey Grammer arrived and positively identify her.

In 1976, Glenn was convicted for all three murders and was sentenced to die via the gas chamber. However, in 1978, the Colorado Supreme Court overturned the death penalty sentence. Later, in a 2009 parole board hearing statement, Kelsey stated, “She was so smart and good and decent. She wrote poetry … We could laugh for hours together… I was supposed to protect her — I could not. It very nearly destroyed me… When we heard this man might be paroled, the suffering began anew.”  Needless to say, his parole was not approved.  Glenn is eligible again for parole in 2014.

If that wasn’t all bad enough, five years after Karen’s murder, on June 1, 1980, both of Kelsey Grammer’s half brothers died unexpectedly. Stephen and Billy were scuba diving off of St. Thomas at the time. When Billy failed to resurface, Stephen went back in after him but died of a fatal embolism during an improper ascent that followed. Billy’s body was never recovered.

Bonus Facts:

  • Kelsey Grammer’s good friend and the producer of Frasier, David Angell, died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Angell and his wife, Lynn, were both passengers of American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane to hit the World Trade Center.
  • Kelsey Grammer has been married four times and has five children. His first daughter, Spencer Karen Grammer is named after his sister. His second daughter, Kandace Greer Grammer’s middle name is the same as the name of his father’s bar-and-grill in St. Thomas, Greer’s Place. His only son, Jude Gordon Grammer, is named after his maternal grandfather, Gordon, who helped raise him.

13 Of The Ugliest Celebrity Bankruptcies In History

$
0
0

mike tysonThere’s nothing quite like America’s obsession with celebrities …  unless, of course, you consider our obsession with celebrity failures.

After all, the shine of a rising star is always eclipsed by the blazing fire caused by a big bank account going up in smoke.

Some high-profile bankruptcy news of late includes:

But these recent headlines are nothing compared with some of the ugliest celebrity bankruptcy stories in history.

Elton John (Bankrupt in 2002)

Sir Elton was living high on the hog with a 37-acre estate in Windsor, among other properties in the U.K., America, and France, and a fleet of 20 luxury cars to ferry him around.

Too bad he couldn’t afford it. The BBC reported that prior to bankruptcy, his credit card bills were rumored to top $400,000 every month and he spent a staggering $55 million in the span of 20 months!

He took legal action against a money manager …  but c’mon, Elton.

In the court case it was revealed he spent $450,000 on flowers alone during the 20-month binge.

Randy Quaid (Bankrupt in 2000)

Oh the irony. After making a film called The Debtors, starring himself and directed by his rather talent-deprived wife Evi, Quaid went broke.

The decade ended with Randy Quaid banned from stage acting and the Quaids arrested for allegedly defrauding an innkeeper.

Vince and Linda McMahon (Bankrupt in 1976)

The brains behind World Wrestling Entertainment clearly didn’t have a head for finance in the beginning.

The couple was in the hole $1 million as the wrestling empire started to blossom.

That included footing the bill for such crazy schemes as a failed Evel Knieval attempt to jump Snake River Canyon and a fight between Muhammad Ali and Japanese wrestler/martial arts star Antonio Inoki.

Oh yeah, and they didn’t like the IRS too much — racking up $142,763 in unpaid income taxes over five straight years.

Amanda Bynes Twitter Attacks Rihanna: 'Chris Brown Beat You Because You’re Not Pretty Enough'

Following Amanda Bynes' Thursday arrest, the 27-year-old former Nickelodeon star has taken to Twitter to blast the NYPD, her parents, and ... Rihanna.

Unprovoked, Bynes tweeted Sunday at Rihanna: "@Rihanna Chris brown beat you because you’re not pretty enough."

The Twitter attack continued, but Bynes has since deleted her Tweets:

Amanda Bynes Rihanna Tweets

Rihanna simply responded by tweeting:

But Bynes' Twitter rant didn't stop there. She then went on to say she wants to sue the NYPD for “illegally” entering her apartment and arresting her.

And if you're wondering where Bynes' parents have been throughout this ordeal, she explains: “I’m 27 and don’t like when press talks to my parents. My parents are almost 70 years old. We are no longer on speaking terms. I would rather them be homeless than live off of my money.”

Here is Bynes' Twitter statement in its entirety, in response to a TMZ article claiming the actress "is not 5150 material, meaning she can't be picked up against her will and held for mental evaluation.":

“@TMZ: Amanda Bynes -- Not Certifiable ... and It's a Big Problem http://tmz.me/Zk8xAH” to say I wasn't offended being treated like a mental insane person/criminal on the night the cops illegally entered my apartment, found nothing, sexually assaulted me, then arrested me taking me to a mental hospital, then locking me up all night for no wrong doing us criminal on THEIR part. My lawyer and I are taking this mistake extremely seriously! You cannot illegally enter my apartment then take me to mental hospital without any grounds. I have never been so offended in my life. They found nothing criminal on me or around me, one cop then sexually assaulted me, so I'm suing for all of the above! I'll be happy when I get money compensation from the cop who assaulted me and NYPD for wrongfully arresting me and having me put into a mental hospital and jail overnight! I don't want to keep talking about it. My lawyer is taking care of it for me. My real friends don't talk about me on twitter. Also, never trust or listen to a word any person from my family says to the press. I am suing them for money laundering/unethical manager work, I never signed a contract with them, and they had been stealing my money without me knowing, claiming they were managing me somehow when they have no right to act as if they did anything to help or enhance my career and I want $ back that I earned on my own. I'm 27 and don't like when press talks to my parents. My parents are almost 70 years old. We are no longer on speaking terms. I would rather them be homeless than live off of my money.

FOX Exec Out After Ratings Tank

american idol

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Longtime Fox television executive Mike Darnell, who helped shepherd "American Idol" to the top of U.S. TV ratings, will leave the network, Fox said on Friday, after the network lost its lead among the younger audience most appealing to advertisers.

Darnell, 51, the network's president of alternative entertainment, oversaw some of Fox's most popular shows - including talent contest "The X Factor," animated series "Family Guy" and reality cooking shows "Hell's Kitchen" and "Kitchen Nightmares."

"I'm extremely grateful that Fox has offered me a new long term contract (and anyone who knows me won't believe I'm saying this), but I've decided it's time for a change," Darnell said in a statement.

Prime time ratings at News Corp-owned Fox slumped 16.7 percent this year, according to Nielsen data provided by Horizon Media and based on viewing the day the show airs.

The network also lost its eight-year grip atop the 18-to-49 age group most coveted by advertisers, falling behind CBS, according to Nielsen data released this week.

Fox's ratings were brought down largely by a shrinking audience for "American Idol." The show's finale set a record-low ratings of 14.2 million viewers last week.

It was the first time in its 12-season history that the audience for the "Idol" finale failed to top 20 million and the network is in the midst of overhauling program's judging panel.

Darnell, who joined the network in 1994 as director of specials, will officially leave Fox at the end of June.

fast and furious 6 vin diesel

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The action-packed sixth installment of the "Fast & Furious" film franchise claimed victory at the North American box office for the three-day U.S. Memorial Day weekend on Monday, and became the biggest opening film in Universal Pictures' history.

"Fast & Furious 6," starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, grossed an estimated $120 million from Friday till Monday, making it the second-biggest film opening of the year behind Disney's "Iron Man 3's" $175.3 million earlier this month.

The film also rang up an estimated $300 million at the global box office.

Universal Pictures said "Fast & Furious 6" bested its predecessor in the series, "Fast Five," which previously held the title of best opening for the studio with $83.6 million at domestic theaters.

"Fast & Furious 6" also raced ahead of raunchy comedy "The Hangover Part III," the third and final installment of the comedy about four men trying to piece together the events of a wild night.

"Hangover," starring Bradley CooperZach Galifianakis and Ed Helms as friends unwittingly drawn back to Las Vegas, made an estimated $51.2 million at the U.S. and Canada box office over the long weekend, keeping in line with studio projections.

The film also opened in its first three international markets over the weekend - United KingdomAustralia and New Zealand - grossing $19 million, bringing the total in the markets where it is showing to an estimated $70.2 million.

"Some might argue that we should have stopped at one, but we loved doing these movies and the audience has been there" for them, Todd Philips, the director of the "Hangover" franchise, told Reuters ahead of the film's release.

"The word 'hangover' ... is something that people share around the world. There are some comedies that are uniquely American, but hangovers exist for the world," he added.

Sci-fi action adventure sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness," playing in 3D and Imax theaters, came in at No. 3 at the domestic box office with $47 million from Friday to Monday, bringing its cumulative total to $155.8 million since opening on May 17.

Animated family film "Epic," about a secret world in which nature's inhabitants come together to fight evil forces, opened on Friday and has grossed an estimated $42.6 million domestically over the Memorial Day weekend.

Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, released "Fast & Furious 6," Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros Studios distributed "The Hangover Part III," and "Star Trek Into Darkness" was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

Amanda Bynes Wig In Court

NEW YORK (Reuters) - American actress Amanda Bynes appeared in court on Friday and denied charges of possessing marijuana and tossing a bong out of the window of her 36th-floor Manhattan apartment.

The former Nickelodeon child star, who appeared in court dressed in gray sweatpants, a long-sleeved black shirt and a disheveled platinum blonde wig, was released on her own recognizance after spending a night in jail after her arrest on Thursday.

She was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, reckless endangerment and attempted tampering with physical evidence, according to court documents. All the alleged offenses are classified as misdemeanors rather than felonies.

Her attorney at the hearing denied the charges and accused police of entering the actress' apartment illegally.

"Clearly a search was made for the bong and nothing was recovered," attorney Andrew Friedman told the court. "My client completely denies ever having thrown anything out the window. She was followed illegally into her apartment for no reason."

The actress, 27, who has had several brushes with the law in the past year and is on probation for driving on a suspended license in California, was ordered to return to court on July 9.

Bynes said, "Thank you, sir," to the judge before leaving court and entering a taxi cab, flanked by paparazzi.

New York police were called to Bynes' 47th Street midtown high-rise building after an employee there reported that someone was smoking marijuana in the building's lobby.

Police said they were then directed to Bynes' apartment, where the actress invited them in.

Officers said they detected a strong smell of marijuana in the apartment and observed the bong - a tube-shaped water pipe commonly used for smoking marijuana - in the apartment.

Bynes then grabbed the bong and threw it out the window and the actress was taken into custody, police said.

Bynes, who had her own TV comedy sketch show on Nickelodeon at the age of 13, has gained a strong Internet following for her recent bizarre behavior and statements on her Twitter social media account.

The actress has not appeared in a film since 2010's "Easy A" and has appeared in court over a slew of driving violations in the past year, including drunk driving, and hit and run.

Facebook Doesn't Want You To See This Ad Because Of A Lawsuit From Eminem

Eminem's music publisher is suing Facebook for allegedly ripping off one of the rapper's songs in the tech giant's inaugural ad for Facebook Home, the Android takeover app.

The lawsuit claims that ad agency Wieden + Kennedy replicated Eminem's "Under the Influence" in an effort to "curry favor with Facebook by catering to Zuckerberg’s personal likes and interests, and/or to invoke the same irreverent theme."

But Facebook has made it virtually impossible for the public to tell if the ad uses Eminem's tracks. Although CEO Mark Zuckerberg played the original spot — titled "Airplane" — with the allegedly ripped off music during his Facebook Home launch speech, the version that was uploaded on YouTube later uses a noticeably different soundtrack.

A representative for Facebook declined comment.

Eminem's lawyer noted, "The alteration of the Airplane advertisement was an admission that Facebook knew it had infringed on the Eminem/D12 Composition."

We pulled the original version of the commercial from the keynote to let readers decide for themselves if it sounds like Facebook stole Eminem's song.

Here's the original, disputed ad for Facebook Home:

And here is Eminem singing "Under the Influence." We had to post a live performance since Eminem's publisher copyrighted the song so that no recorded versions can play off of YouTube. Here's a recorded version with better sound quality.

And here's the Facebook Home ad that was released on YouTube with an altered soundtrack:

Beyoncé was in the middle of belting out "Irreplaceable" during a concert stop in Copenhagen Monday night when one overzealous fan almost ruined it for everyone.

As the singer walked down the stage to interact with the audience, one male concert-goer had the guts to slap Mrs. Jay-Z's butt.

B immediately turned around and sternly said into the mic, “I will have you escorted out right now, alright?”

She then quickly picked up the song right where she left off, like a pro. Watch it all go down below:

A Graphic Lesbian Drama Won The Top Prize At The Cannes Film Festival

La Vie d'Adele Blue is the warmest colorJust like it has done for the past 66 years, the 2013 Cannes Film Festival came to a close Sunday — but this year, something was different.

The winner of the Palme d'Or — the festival's top prize — went to a racy, controversial French love story described by some as a “graphic lesbian drama.”

Abdellatif Kechiche's film "La Vie d'Adele," or "Blue is the Warmest Colour," was honored just as anti gay-marriage protestors in Paris clashed with French police following the passing of France's new same-sex marriage law.

“After long weeks punctuated by outbursts of homophobic gay marriage debates, 'Blue is the Warmest Color' looks directly at its two young heroines not as an anomaly or a curiosity but as a passion taking seed in eternal love,” wrote France's La Liberation newspaper.

Cannes jury president Steven Spielberg insisted politics played no role in "Blue is the Warmest Color" beating out 19 other films for the festival's top honor.

“Politics was not in the room with us,” Spielberg said. “We just all felt (this) was a profound love story. We didn't think about how it was going to play, we just were really happy that someone had the courage to tell this story the way he did."

Scottish director Lynne Ramsay, Spielberg's fellow Cannes jury memberechoed his sentiments, saying the film won because "It was a love affair that everyone can identify with. And that is what makes it very special that everyone recognized their own relationships, whether they were straight or gay."

Microsoft Still Hasn't Said Whether Or Not You'll Need An Internet Connection To Play Games On The Next Xbox (MSFT)

Last week Microsoft revealed the successor to the nearly eight-year-old Xbox 360, the Xbox One.

Despite not having a release date other than "later this year," the new video game console is already stirring up controversy among gamers because it hasn't been clear whether or not the console will require an Internet connection to work.

The Xbox One will supposedly need to connect to the Internet to verify that you aren't trying to play pirated games.

Early reports about the console stated that it wouldn't require "a constant Internet connection" nor block users from playing used games, based on statements from Xbox UK's director of marketing. However, when journalists asked for clarification regarding what Microsoft meant by "constant," Microsoft Games Studios General Manager Matt Booty noted that in the case of Internet connections going down, "there are likely to be some games modes that you'll be able to continue to play."

In response to fears that this meant that most games would require Internet connectivity, a serious problem for gamers with spotty or non-existent connections, the Xbox PR team put the following update on the Xbox One FAQ page:

No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

So the official response was that yes, the Xbox One will require an Internet connection, just not all the time. Thus the question in gamers heads became: how often? Video game news site Kotaku sought out an answer from Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison, who said that the console would check in with Microsoft servers once a day.

But then Microsoft backpedaled on its response. It gave video game site Polygon a statement that said Harrison was only talking about "potential scenarios" with the Xbox One:

While Phil [Harrison] discussed many potential scenarios around games on Xbox One, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

Finally, in an interview with Business Insider, Xbox's hardware boss Todd Holmdahl said users will only need to connect the Xbox One to the Internet to authenticate it, but you won't be required to connect to play games.

Bottom line: it's pretty clear that Microsoft hasn't developed a consistent policy for how the Xbox One will connect online and how often it will need to do so in order to work.
