Audi And Leonard Nimoy Mock Mercedes-Benz In A Funny New Ad

leonard nimoy golf clubs mercedes-benz cls 550

Audi capitalized on the upcoming release of the new "Star Trek" film with a video in which two stars of the franchise mock Mercedes-Benz.

The funny, briefly profane (but beeped out) ad stars Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the new "Star Trek" movies, as the driver of Audi's 2013 S7 sedan.

Leonard Nimoy, best known for playing the same character in the 1960s television series and early films, has a Mercedes-Benz CLS 550, one of the S7's biggest competitors in performance, luxury, and price.

When the two Spocks race from their homes to the golf course, the S7 wins handily by capitalizing on two of its nicer features.

The S7 has a lot more trunk space than the CLS 550 (24.5 cubic feet compared to 15.3), and Audi now offers Google Maps as part of its navigation system.

Nimoy can't fit his golf clubs in the trunk of the Benz, and ends up buckling them into the passenger seat. Then he gets stuck in traffic, singing a song about "Lord of the Rings" character Bilbo Baggins to himself.

Meanwhile, Quinto puts his clubs in the S7's trunk with ease and zips down the street, accompanied by the "Star Trek" theme music.

While the Mercedes-Benz loses, Nimoy ultimately comes out on top with a last minute Vulcan nerve pinch, leaving Quinto unconscious outside the golf course clubhouse.

Audi has been all over the summer blockbusters this year — Tony Stark drives the luxury make's electric R8 supercar in the just-released "Iron Man 3."

Here's the Spocks ad, which was executive produced by Joseph Assad, at marketing communications firm PMK*BNC:

Big Data Firm Claims To Know The Secrets To A Successful Hollywood Script

$

Oz the great and powerful

The rise of big data is taking hold in Hollywood.

Studios are becoming more and more reliant on consultants to make decisions at every point of production.

A major advocate of this trend is former statistics professor Vinny Bruzzese, who has started aggressively pitching the script evaluation services of his company, Worldwide Motion Picture Group (MPG), according to a New York Times profile.

For as much as $20,000 per script, Bruzzese and his analysts will break down the script and compare it to other movies in an extensive database. MPG uses data from focus group results for similar films, a survey of 1,500 potential moviegoers, analyzes similar film genres and how they have fared, and ad tests for movies.

The price sounds like a bargain compared to traditional script doctors who can charge between $250,000-$300,000 per week, according to Variety.

Do MPG's insights really help? Unfortunately their contributions to movies remain closely guarded secrets.

The only insights mentioned in the Times were that bowling scenes and demonic possessions don't work in movies and guardian superheroes do better than cursed superheroes.

We, however, are not sure where Bruzzese is going with this advice.  Films with bowling scenes range from "The Big Lebowski" to the climactic scene of "There Will Be Blood."Cursed" superheroes could hint toward "Hellboy" and "The Hulk." However, 2007's "Ghost Rider" spun off a sequel last year. Spider Man could be considered a cursed hero and his movies have made more than $3 billion at theaters worldwide

Regardless, MPG is proud of its track record for script consulting and other services, as described on its website:

Since 2005, we have conducted research testing hundreds of films, 109 of which each went on to gross domestically over 100 million at the box office. 45 have been nominated and have won Golden Globes and Oscars.
 Of those 45:

  • 67 Golden Globe nominations, leading to 21 wins.
  • 85 Oscar nominations, leading to 27 wins, including Best Picture.

We have tested films in every genre, including animation, documentary and short films, compiling a significant database of benchmarks with which to compare results.

Clients include every major motion picture studio and over 100 production companies, both indie and mainstream.

Screenwriters aren't so sure.

"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" screenwriter Ol Parker told the NYT he finds the process too mechanic.

"It’s the enemy of creativity, nothing more than an attempt to mimic that which has worked before," said Parker. "It can only result in an increasingly bland homogenization, a pell-mell rush for the middle of the road."

Others including producer Scott Steindorff ("The Lincoln Lawyer") believe "everyone is going to be doing this soon."

18 Cringeworthy Pictures Of Rich People Trying To Look Like Punks

MG Julie Macklowe

Last night, the annual Met Gala asked its wealthy and famous guests to dress for the theme "Punk: Chaos to Couture."

Most of the party-goers — including Hollywood celebrities, fashion's elite, and power players — were totally stumped.

Some ignored the punk theme completely or tried to tastefully incorporate it in the form of spikes, leather, or mesh.

But a select few really took the idea and ran with it, for better or worse.

Anna Wintour and her daughter Bee Shaffer looked decidedly not punk in floral and pink dresses. (Apparently, the color of punk is pink.)

Lisa Maria Falcone, the wife of hedge fund manager Phil Falcone, busted out of her bright yellow gown in a black bra (with safety pins) and matching gloves.

Designer Donatella Versace rocked the theme with mesh cut outs and lots of spikes.

Rihanna 7/7/7 TourIn November, Rihanna invited 200 people (150 media, 50 fan contest winners) on her "777 tour," which consisted of seven concerts in seven countries in seven days via a 777 aircraft to promote her seventh album, "Unapologetic."

But seven may be the singer's unlucky number.

Just two shows into the world tour, RiRi was already over it, saying, “It’s already feeling a little brutal.”

Meanwhile, journalists were flooding the internet with horror stories of their trip — complaining of little sleep, little interaction with Rihanna, and how late the singer was for every concert.

Six months later, Fox picked up the documentary about the fateful trip and aired the 41-minute special Monday night. You can watch the entire thing below:

"Assault on Wall Street," a new movie from director Uwe Boll, hits theaters for limited release on Friday.

Below is the synopsis, via Rotten Tomatoes:

A security guard for an armored truck, Jim (Dominic Purcell), is a blue-collar New Yorker who works hard to earn a living. His wages support himself and his wife Rosie (Erin Karpluk), who is on the upswing recovering from a near-fatal illness.

Yet things start to fall apart after Rosie's health insurance stops covering her treatment and Jim's life savings are lost via a disastrous investment his stockbroker had advised him to make. As a row of professional and personal dominoes falls, Jim is confronted by the realization that, after being abused and exploited by financial institutions for far too long, he has only one choice: to strike back.

From the mind of notorious German writer/director Uwe Boll (House of the Dead), ASSAULT ON WALL STREET is excoriating look at the American financial system that is sure to stir up plenty of Occupy-esque sentiment.

Matt Lauer Ranks 'Least-Trusted' News Anchor In New Poll

matt lauer ann curryReaders Digest has put together a poll of "The 100 Most Trusted People in America."

They teamed up with research firm The Wagner Group to poll over 1,000 Americans and discover which individuals and the ideals they represent have earned our confidence.

Those surveyed were asked for their views on a list of “more than 200 American opinion shapers, leaders and headline makers from 15 highly influential professions.”

The number one most trusted person in America? Actor Tom Hanks.

But unsurprisingly, not nearly as popular as Hanks, was Matt Lauer.

Following the ousting of Ann Curry, the "Today" show host's reputation has clearly hit a low point.

The Readers Digest poll revealed which TV anchors are currently the most — and least — trusted in America:

    1. Robin Roberts, "Good Morning America" (56%)
    2. Diane Sawyer, "ABC World News" (51%)
    3. Brian Williams, "NBC Nightly News" (50%)
    4. Barbara Walters, ABC (50%)
    5. Katie Couric, ABC News special correspondent (49%)
    6. Anderson Cooper, CNN "Anderson Cooper 360°" (48%)
    7. George Stephanopoulos, "Good Morning America" (47%)
    8. Scott Pelley, "CBS Evening News" (46%)
    9. Savannah Guthrie, NBC "Today" Show (42%)
    10. Matt Lauer, NBC "Today" Show (41%) — The lowest number for any of the network news hosts who made the list.

This is the first year Reader’s Digest has published the “Most Trusted” list in the U.S., so a spokeswoman couldn’t say how Lauer’s rating might have changed over time.

A new museum devoted to the 1970s Swedish pop band ABBA just opened in Stockholm, Sweden.

The museum, called ABBA The Museum, is devoted to all things ABBA, showcasing the band's albums, costumes, and memorabilia. Visitors will also be able to karaoke to ABBA music on stage with interactive holograms of the band members.

The museum will be part of the larger Swedish Music Hall of Fame, which also opened today.

Despite the fact that the group broke up in 1983, ABBA remains one of the most popular tourist attractions, so it's only natural that there would be a museum dedicated to the group.

ABBA The Museum is located in Djurgården, an island in central Stockholm.

Guests will walk past the glitzy lit ABBA logo.

Visitors can check out the flashy spandex and velvet 1970s costumes worn by the band members.

Memo Shows The CIA Did Play A Role In Changing 'Zero Dark Thirty'

zero dark thirty

"Zero Dark Thirty" screenwriter Mark Boal acquiesced to CIA requests to change material in the film that would have reflected poorly on the agency, according to a newly declassified memo.

The drama's depiction of the role torture played in the hunt for Osama bin Laden set off fierce debate when it theaters last year, although much of the furor surrounding the film died down after it lost the Oscar for Best Picture to "Argo."

Those issues may bubble up again now that the memo from an unnamed public affairs officer has been released to Gawker under a Freedom of Information Act request. It shows Boal agreeing to delete or alter scenes that the spy service objected to.

"The purpose for these discussions was for OPA officers to help promote an appropriate portrayal of the Agency and the Bin Ladin operation," the memo reads.

A spokesman for Boal did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a series of conference calls in the fall of 2011, Boal agreed to change a scene that would have shown the CIA agent portrayed by Jessica Chastain assisting in enhanced interrogation of a detainee. He did so because the agency objected to its accuracy.

Boal also agreed to delete a scene that would have shown CIA officers using dogs as part of  interrogations and to excise a rooftop party scene that involved an officer firing an AK-47 into the air after drinking cocktails. Again, the changes were made because they were deemed inaccurate.

"We insisted mixing drinking and firearms is a major violation and actions like this do not happen in real life," the memo reads.

enders game asa butterfield

The first trailer for "Ender's Game" is here, and it's full of gorgeous landscape shots, Harrison Ford narration, and Ben Kingsley—fresh out of his "Iron Man 3" role—covered in facial tattoos.

The film, based on the 1985 novel from Orson Scott Card, is set in a futuristic Earth preparing to undergo battle with an alien race (Formics) for a third time.

Director Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") brings us the adaptation ripe with Oscar nominee talent in Ford, Viola Davia, Abigail Breslin, and Oscar-winner, Kingsley.

The main protagonist, Ender, is played by Asa Butterfield ("Hugo").

For those unfamiliar with the story, the first 50 seconds of the trailer play similar to another anticipated alien film due out this summer, Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim."

However, instead of equipping men with the task to relinquish the Earth of aliens, children are sent to military school to combat the threat.

"Ender's Game" comes to theaters November 1.

Here's a shot of that beautiful landscape we were talking about from the trailer:

Paramount & MGM Sued For $23M By ‘G.I. Joe’ Writers Who Claim Sequel Was ‘Stolen’

gi joe retaliation

Two of the screenwriters of the first G.I. Joe movie have filed a multi-million copyright infringement suit against Paramount Pictures, MGM, Hasbro and Di Bonaventura Pictures.

In their two-claim complaint (read it here) filed on May 3 in federal court, David Elliot and Paul Lovett are seeking $23 million in damages and claiming much of this year’sG.I Joe: Retaliation sequel was “stolen” from their ideas.

With extensive side-by-side comparisons between the pitch the duo were asked to submit to the companies in late 2009 and the actual Retaliation film, the heavily detailed 113-page complaint alleges that the two works are “substantially similar in every material way.”

Claiming copyright infringement and breach of implied contract, Elliot and Lovett are seeking a jury trial in the case.

The Principato-Young Entertainment repped duo were the writers of the G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra movie back in 2009 along with Stuart Beattie. Not long after that film came out, they were requested to put together some ideas for a sequel with the understanding that they would get the scribe gig on the movie if their ideas were accepted.

Though they put together a detailed plotline and characters descriptions, as well had extensive back and forth with the film’s producers like Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, it was just not meant to be. “On or around December 3, 2009, Defendants notified Plaintiffs that Defendants had decided to engage a different writing team to write the screenplay for the Sequel,” the complaint said.

OK but when the movie came out the duo say it was their story on the screen with the sequel. “These original inventions, which make Plaintiffs’ Proposed Sequel a compelling piece of story-telling, have been stolen by the PDH Defendants in the hopes of infusing the Joe Retaliation Movie with the blockbuster power of Plaintiffs’ Work,” their complaint adds. They are not credited at all on the 2013 sequel.

Unlike many similar cases of alleged sticky fingers, Elliot and Lovett are established Hollywood screenplay writers. They previously worked with di Bonaventura on 2005′s gritty Four Brothers. The two are currently working on a Midnight Run sequel for Universal with Brett Ratner attached to direct. Pushed back from its original late June 2012 release date to March 28, 2013 so 3D and more Channing Tatum could be added, the Jon Chu-directed film opened with a $132 million global gross. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote 2009’s Zombieland, were credited as the screenwriters on the sequel. Elliot and Lovett are represented by Henry Gradstein, Maryann Marzano and Robert Allen of LA firm Gradstein and Marzano.

'Star Trek Into Darkness Reviews': Not As Good As The First

$
0
0

star trek into darkness zoe saldana zachary quinto

"Star Trek Into Darkness" may not be out until next weekend, but the first reviews are out and they're overwhelmingly positive.

Director J.J. Abrams' sequel to his 2009 reboot doesn't receive much praise for creativity, but Benedict Cumberbatch's villainous performance makes up for shortcomings.

The film follows the return of Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and the U.S.S. Enterprise crew as they square off with the mysterious John Harrison (Cumberbatch).

Currently, BoxOffice.com is tracking "Star Trek" to debut to a strong $93 million opening weekend

With studio competition steep this month, Paramount just bumped the release date up a day to Thursday, May 16, so projections may run higher.

(To sweeten its box-office opening, "Star Trek" also has more expensive IMAX select showings Wednesday night which are selling out.)

Before seeing "Star Trek," here's what you need to know.

As in any Abram's movie, there will be lens flare:

Empire:

"Abrams directs with lots of flare (forget 3D glasses, take Ray-Bans), but, more importantly, flair. His style is somewhere between the machine-tooled work of Cameron and the manic intensity of Bay, efficient but still loose and seemingly improvised."

While some say the film is visually pleasing:

Variety:

“Into Darkness” is a beautifully modulated and sustained piece of work across the board, with visual effects that seamlessly meld live-action and computer-animated elements, given further texture by old-fashioned celluloid lensing."

One review suggests the sequel feels a bit mechanic:

The Hollywood Reporter (THR):

"The production gives the impression of a massive machine cranked up for two hours of full output; it efficiently delivers what it's built to do, but without style or personality."

Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing.

benedict cumberbatch star trek into darknessIGN

"Cumberbatch himself has never been better. While he's proven his ability at volatile emotional-detachment with his role in Sherlock, he is, here, a true snake; an expressionless, sliver of a man whose mask only slips when he lunges for his prey. The Enterprise crew look trivial against him, their uniforms retro and goofy against his men's magazine sleekness.

Variety:

"Whatever Cumberbatch is playing, he’s wonderful to watch, infusing the movie with the kind of exotic grandeur Eric Bana’s wan Romulan henchman (arguably the weakest link in the 2009 film) largely lacked.

Digital Spy:

"He is genuinely terrifying, quasi-reptilian, combining visceral physical threat with a knack for emotional manipulation that wrong-foots Kirk in much the same way it does us."

But his villanous role doesn't live up to the hype.

Indiewire:

"Frankly, the part's underwritten and undermotivated, the writers hoping that fans will fill in the blanks from earlier movies and only loosely sketching out his backstory, at least for newcomers to the franchise, and never making it especially clear what he actually wants to achieve."

THR:

"The revelation of his [Cumberbatch] true identity will come as no surprise to fanboys who live to unearth this sort of information."

Zoe Saldana's talent is wasted this time around.

IGN

"Other sub-plots suffer a far worse fate, with Zoe Saldana's Uhura demoted to whining comic-relief."

It's not better than the original:

The Guardian:

"People are unlikely to charge out of the cinema with quite the same level of glee as they did in 2009; but this is certainly an astute, exhilarating concoction."

Indiewire:

"By the time the credits roll, there's a sense that you're undernourished and unsatisfied; you've been on a decent ride, but not one that really adds up to anything by the time you're done."

 IGN

"Into Darkness proves that J.J.'s original reboot was no fluke. But let's hope that the next movie can build a bit further upon its simplistic foundations."

Overall, it's a bit cheesy and silly:

anton yelchin star trek into darknessThe Telegraph

"All of the narrative cracks are papered over with references to old Star Trek characters and episodes."

THR:

"The film looks surprisingly flat, bordering on cheesy; the images are pale, thin and bleached out, makeup and facial blemishes are magnified, and the very shallow depth-of-field in many shots (not the CGI but real photography) works against the point of the format. After a steady progression in the brilliant visual quality of big-budget, effects-heavy major releases during the past couple of years, this one takes a few steps backward.

But it's a lot of fun anyway.

Variety:

"'Into Darkness' may not boldly go where no 'Trek' adventure has gone before, but getting there is such a well-crafted, immensely pleasurable ride that it would be positively Vulcan to nitpick."

Empire:

"If this is Abrams’ final frontier, he has left Star Trek in a good place, both in the fictional universe and as a franchise. In some sense, the title is misleading. Into Darkness is a blast, fun, funny, spectacular and exhilarating. The rule of great even-numbered Trek movies continues."

Indiewire:

"The action sequences (barring the climax) are thrilling, especially an 'Inception'-indebted freefall sequence that sees the crew negotiating gravity-shifting practical sets."

Overall Consensus: See it.

Though the majority of reviews says the film isn't breaking new ground or isn't necessarily a triumph over 2009's reboot, J.J. Abrams takes fans on a thrill ride with a menacing—if predictable—villain in Cumberbatch. We'd see it just for him.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" is in theaters May 16.

"Star Wars" theme parks may be the next adventure for Disney.

During yesterday's earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Igerhinted at the possibility of a theme park while discussing further opportunities for its "Star Wars" acquisition.

"In addition to the Star Wars feature films that we’ve already talked about, we’re also working on opportunities for television and our parks. It’s still very early in the process. We’ll announce details as these developments evolve."

Rumors have been swirling about a possible "Star Wars" land since Disney acquired the rights to Lucasfilm last year for $4 billion.

Earlier this year, the rumors seemed more than just that as images of surveys in Disneyland California asking visitors if they'd be interested in a "Star Wars"-themed park popped up online.

Gawker's Ken Layne tweeted the following in March:

Since Iger mentioned opportunities through parks, it sounds likely the focus could also be on "Star Wars"-themed rides.

Disney already has annual "Star Wars" weekends in place at its parks.
