'The Great Gatsby' Soundtrack Debuts Online To Mixed Reviews

Lana Del Rey singing

We teased you with the "Crazy in Love" jazz remix and Lana del Rey's "Young and Beautiful," but the wait is over and you can now — finally — listen to the entire "Great Gatsby" soundtrack.

Executive produced by director Baz Luhrmann and Jay-Z , the much anticipated soundtrack can currently be listened to on online service Rdio.com or purchased on iTunes.

Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Lana Del Ray, Jack White, will.i.am, Florence + The Machine, The XX, and others are all featured on the album.

The film opens in theaters May 10.

Here's what a few of the music reviews are saying:

Huffington Post liked it:

"The Jay-Z-produced musical roller coaster mixes electronica, hip-hop and rock with jazz-age sounds into a breathy, sexy, dangerous, electric result. It was to be expected from the master of mind-blowing pastiche, director Baz Luhrmann, to create a totally anachronistic companion to his lush film that works to drive the story's point home – illusionary love, the excess of the leisure classes, the curse of money."

Slant enjoyed it, too:

”Executive produced by Jay-Z (who also holds a producing credit for the film), the Gatsby soundtrack seems, on the whole, to be an extraordinary melding of vintage and contemporary sounds, fulfilling Jay-Z and Luhrmann’s goal to ‘translate Jazz Age sensibilities’ into something that can speak to, and enchant, the modern listener.”

 Entertainment Weekly was lukewarm:

"What results is very good (Lana) and very bad (Florence) and very, very interesting, as is the nature of projects that overflow with talented people all working at once. Also: very period. If you didn’t know the movie is set almost 100 years ago, the soundtrack shouts it out at you, all honking brass and a preference for tempos that slide up the scale like liquor, getting hot just as they hit the chorus.”

Rolling Stone didn't love it:

“Not everything works. Lana Del Rey’s ‘Young and Beautiful’ is meant to be one of the album’s centerpieces; instead, it’s inert, a drag. But the LP conjures a consistent mood of noirish, doomed romance – and succeeds, in songs like Will.i.am’s lovably doofy ‘Bang Bang,’ in mashing up hip-hop with 1920s-style dance music.”

MSN Music hated it:

“Big names (FergieJack White) litter this soundtrack, but the payoff is often underwhelming: Take the loping, cringeworthy Beyoncé and Andre 3000 cover of Amy Winehouse‘s ‘Back to Black.’ (No, please, take it.)”

Now listen to a few of the songs in their entirety and judge for yourselves:

Christopher Abbott Girls actorIn April, "Girls" actor Christopher Abbott — who plays Marnie's boyfriend Charlie on the hit HBO show — abruptly announced he was leaving the series.

“They’ve just started work on Season three, and Chris is at odds with Lena,” a source told the New York Post at the time. “He didn’t like the direction things are going in."

The end of season two left Abbott's character rekindling his romance with Allison Williams' Marnie after an on-again-off-again relationship since the series debuted.

Williams, talking for the first time about her on-screen love's departure, tells TV line Abbott leaving has “a huge effect on our show and [on the character of] Marnie specifically."

"It’s unfortunate that [Abbott] is no longer a part of the family,” adds the 25-year-old actress.

But she, along with the rest of Lena Dunham's "Girls" crew, have remained positive.

Marnie Charlie Allison WIlliams Christopher Abbott Girls“The minute I heard the news, there wasn’t a single doubt in my mind that [the show's writing staff] would come up with great stuff for Marnie to be doing," adds Williams. "And what we’ve done so far and what we’re continuing to do is so excellent.”

Williams adds that had Abbott stayed for season three, she suspects Marnie’s story arc "would have spanned from the couple’s reunification to the inevitable dissolution of their relationship.”

Now, though, “it’s almost as if we skipped her third season and have gone on to single Marnie,” continued Williams. The split “means that Marnie is now piecing herself back together.”

Season three of "Girls" is currently filming in New York City.

ABC News Editor Don 'Dawn' Ennis Comes Out As Transgender

Dawn Ennis

After walking into the ABC News office on Friday in a little black dress and brunette wig, top ABC News editor Don Ennis announced that he would now like to be called "Dawn" and will be making the transition into a woman.

"The 49-year-old father of three said he’s splitting from his wife of 17 years to become a woman, or Dawn Stacey Ennis, as she is now known on her governmental records," reports the New York Post.

A ten-year veteran of ABC, Ennis' co-workers reportedly took the news well, leaving flowers on her desk and celebrating with a cake. ABC News President Ben Sherwood even wrote her a note of support.

Ennis, who is currently shopping a book deal, took to her Facebook page [it is now private, but DailyMail has screen grabs] to explain her story.

“Today I begin anew," she begins. "Please understand: This is not a game of dress-up, or make-believe. It is my affirmation of who I now am and what I must do to be happy, in response to a soul-crushing secret that my wife and I have been dealing with for more than seven years, mostly in secret."

Ennis said she suffers from an “unusual hormonal imbalance,” and blames her mother, who fed her female hormones as a child to prolong a commercial acting career.

“I have a rare medical condition — nothing deadly or infectious — but it has resulted in an unusual hormonal imbalance, ” she explains. “One so profound that I don’t resemble the man you first met 10 years ago.”

Ennis has not yet undergone a sex change operation, but says her marriage is “wrecked.”

“Despite the heartbreak, [my wife] has encouraged me to start this new life that we both believe better fits who I now am,” Ennis continued. "Trust me, this is NOT the midlife crisis I was counting on — I’d much prefer to have bought a sports car. Even an affair, I think, would have been something we might have recovered from."

“I’m sure if you had to pick someone we know in common who might be transitioning from male to female, I’m guessing I would not even crack the top ten,” she added.

While Dawn just came out to her co-workers, she has long been an active commenter on her YouTube account and often "likes" videos by fellow transgender people also going through transition.

'Avengers' Cast Assemble For Bigger Paychecks For Sequel

$

the avengers

The Marvel team assembled for "The Avengers," and now they're rallying together for another cause.

Deadline reports the cast of last year's blockbuster are looking for big pay bumps.

That shouldn't come as any surprise.

The film became the third-highest grossing movie of all time earning an incredible $1.5 billion worldwide and contributed to Disney CEO Bob Iger's 20% increase in salary last year.

Robert Downey Jr. confirmed to GQ he received an astounding $50 million paycheck for the film.

"Avengers" director Joss Whedon's pay for several films, consulting, and his upcoming ABC "Avengers" spinoff, "S.H.I.E.L.D." clocks in at $100 million, according to Deadline.

The rest of the cast earned nuggets in comparison.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo earned between $2-3 million with bonuses

Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson reportedly earned $4-6 million.

Deadline reports other unspecified actors received $200,000.

Getting a raise isn't easy as it sounds.

For one thing, many of the actors are tied down with contracts and agreements made early on with Marvel.

Evans signed on to appear in six Marvel films—a number which was originally set at nine. Ruffalo also signed a six-picture deal. Jackson; however, signed on for nine pictures. Johansson and Renner are said to have similar deals.

To keep costs low, Deadline says Marvel has threatened to recast actors or sue when contracts are disputed.

iron man 2 don cheadleDon Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2" after The Hollywood Reporter claimed the actor asked for too much of a pay hike.

In order to get any sort of raise it's looking like the cast is uniting as a real-life "Avengers" team behind Robert Downey Jr.

Sources tell Deadline "He’s already sent a message that he’s not going to work for a place where they treat his colleagues like s---.”

This is a problem for Marvel considering Downey Jr. isn't signed on for any future Marvel film since his contract ended with "Iron Man 3."

The Hollywood Reporter says Disney and Marvel are already talking about an "Avengers 3" or "Iron Man 4."

Margaret Cho: 'John Travolta Is Like Oscar Wilde Gay'

Margaret ChoComedian and gay rights activist Margaret Cho is calling it like she sees it.

After working with John Travolta on the 1997 film "Face/Off," Cho — who is bisexual told a recent stand-up audience, "John Travolta is so gay!"

"I’m going to get in trouble but I’ll just tell you," she continued. "He’s not just gay. He doesn’t just like men. He is like Oscar Wilde gay, like Lord Byron gay. That kind of crazy, incredibly flamboyant gay."

"I feel bad for him, because I know he would be much happier if he could just come out," she says, "But he can’t."

Cho continues on her Travolta rant, telling her audience what it was like to shoot a movie with the pampered "Grease" actor in the 90s.

Margaret Cho Face/Off"It was a weird movie because the way that he worked on it was John Travolta, he can only work 10 hours a day," she explains. "And part of the 10 hours is him flying his plane to the location and flying home. So essentially he only had to work like five hours a day."

She wasted no time making another joke about his sexuality.

"He was so pampered and so taken care of, it was the closest I have ever been to being in the presence of a king," before adding, "Or a queen, actually."

Travolta, who has been married to Kelly Preston since 1991, had two sexual harassment lawsuits filed against him last year by male masseurs, both of which were eventually dropped.

Cho, meanwhile, has made no apologies for her on-stage remarks, but did re-tweet the below:

Madonna Sells French Painting For $7 Million At Auction

Madonna art sothebys

Madonna made a $3.8 million profit after she sold an art work titled “Three Women at the Red Table” by French artist Fernand Léger during a Sotheby's auction in New York on Tuesday.

The singer had originally purchased the 1921 painting for $3.4 million in 1990 and sold it for $7.2 million Tuesday to a South American bidder, reports the Wall Street Journal.

And she's donating 100% of the profits to her Ray of Light Foundation  supporting girls' education projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.

Before the auction, Madonna posed with the piece — which hung in her New York City apartment's living room for decades — and instagrammed a photo with the caption: "At Sotheby's next to my painting. Saying a Prayer for a generous collector Who loves Leger and the idea of empowering GIRLS! Thank you Sotheby's. Thank you Pierre!"

"Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen!" Madonna wrote on her Facebook page after the auction.

People Don't Recognize Beyoncé In Ads Unless She's Blonde

Blonde Beyonce

Apparently, we prefer Beyoncé blonde.

Last week, H&M released two similar new ads to promote its beachwear collection featuring the African American singer. In one of the spots, Beyoncé sports a black string bikini and a waist length platinum blonde hairdo. In the other, she wears a wet, figure-hugging mini-dress, her long locks a rich brunette. She performs the same song in both commercials.

According to a study conducted by AceMetrix, the ad showcasing Beyoncé as a blonde scored significantly higher, with 9% more people referencing the singer by name after seeing the spot.

It appears that Pepsi has already conducted its own research on the likeability of Beyoncé's various hair colors. In a spot that the beverage company released last month, the pop star is unapologetically blonde as she struts her stuff for the soda brand.

Curiously, while the H&M spots scored well with both men and women, the Pepsi ad was mostly favored by women. But then again, Beyoncé wears neither a bikini or wet dress for Pepsi.

The Most Powerful Woman At Conde Nast — No, Not Anna Wintour — Doesn't Respond To Emails

$

Jill Bright Anna Wintour

Jill Bright, the chief administrative officer of the Conde Nast magazine empire, is the most powerful woman at the company, according to a must-read story in Adweek.

That would make her more powerful than Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who in this context might best be described as merely the most famous woman at Conde Nast.

Bright became "so powerful, she's scary," as Adweek puts it, via the HR department. Usually, power inside CN accumulates with those who control the ad revenue or the editorial product.

Bright is regarded internally as a potential successor to CEO Chuck Townsend, given that she's been his "consigliere" at the company for many years. Lucia Moses reports:

Bright may be inscrutable, but the question of how someone who's not in a revenue-producing role or advancing a new business model could become so important at the company is one of endless debate inside its walls. When it comes to talk of succession, Bright’s name is mentioned in the same breath as Townsend and family scions Steve and Jonathan Newhouse.

Adweek makes her sound like a character from the movie "The Devil Wore Prada," imperious and distant:

She’s known for not returning emails. ... Said [a] sales-side exec, “... The only Achilles heel she has is, she operates in the shadows.”

And she's a full-on corporate soldier:

When asked at one point about her identity as a minority woman at the company (Bright is African-American), she claimed not to think about it, saying, "I don't think of myself, so I don’t really think other people might think about it. I think I’m very Condé Nast."

Inside Iron Man's $117 Million Malibu Mansion

$
0
0

iron man mansion

It’s closing in on Summer Movie Season (yes, it’s capitalized). For the next several months movie studios will be throwing out their blockbusters, and personally this is my favorite time of the year to see movies. (I’m a sucker for big-budget popcorn flicks.)

One of the major tentpole movies coming out this summer is Iron Man 3. This is a big deal for a lot of people, including me. When I was younger I had a thing for robots. In my confused little brain, I somehow thought that Iron Man was a robot, not some dude in a tin suit. Either way, for a few months Iron Man was my favorite superhero. To this day, I still have some warm feelings about the guy, meaning I’m pumped for the movie.

In preparation for the next installment in the series, I rewatched the first two movies. One of the things that struck me was Iron Man’s house. It’s gorgeous, open, and a million more adjectives. This led me to ask: How much would Iron Man’s house cost?

After I crunched the numbers and battled the Internet, my best guess was about $117,250,000. To put this into perspective, Iron Man’s house is more than twice the price of Wayne Manor. You’ll never hear me say that Iron Man is better than Batman, but someone out there is going to put a checkmark in Tony Stark’s column.

How I Did It

You know this: I needed a size, location, and comparables in order to value Tony Stark’s palatial abode. Of these three things, all were somewhat difficult to come by, though they were definitely not as hard to source as in some of my previous projects. I’m still reeling from evaluating Howl’s Moving Castle and Hogwarts. In fact, compared to those two projects, evaluating Iron Man’s digs was easy.

I’ll start with what “Iron Man house” I picked and a location.

Where Does a Genius, Billionaire, Philanthropists Live?

tony stark mansion listingWhere has Iron Man lived over the years? That’s quite a question and the answer depends on what “Iron Man” you’re talking about. Iron Man started life in comic books, but because the movie is right around the corner, I decided to look at the home from the Iron Man movie series. What did I find? Iron Man’s huge, state-of-the-art home is located on California’s Point Dume, which is itself located in Malibu, CA.

While this information was great to find, there was a little problem. Point Dume—the cliff, at least—are protected. In other words, you can’t build a massive home on the cliffs of Point Dume. I’m sorry to break the news to you; I cried as well.

It turns out that during the lead-up to the first movie, production designers wanted to film in a home that resembled a John Lautner creation. The problem—and I can’t believe I’m saying this—was that the homes in the area weren’t fancy enough. They looked like they were owned by poor millionaires, opposed to billionaires.

Instead of using a real house, director John Favreau picked a cliff top and CGI-ed a fancy house onto it. The interior shots were filmed inside a sound stage.

In Evaluations, Size Matters

tony stark mansion

It’s typically pretty easy to figure out a way to put a square footage to a fictional house. Yes, some homes are easier than others, but it can be done with enough time and energy. The Iron Man house proved to be the exception. Try as I might, I couldn’t come up with a way to evaluate the home’s size. There aren’t models; there aren’t blueprints. It was a sad day indeed.

What this meant was that I needed to be a bit liberal in how I came up with an estimated size. I had several options at this point, none of which I was too excited about. I might have been putting a price tag to a fictional property, but darn it, I wanted that price to be as accurate as possible. My options were:

  • Find a home that inspired the Iron Man house
  • Make up a random number
  • Find the largest home in the area and assume Stark’s digs were at least as big

After looking into all of these, I decide to base the square footage on a home that partially inspired the fictional abode. I mentioned above that Iron Man’s home was base on John Lautner designs. I decided that Casa Marbisa (25,000 square feet) was a pretty good match. To be on the safe side, I searched for a Malibu home with a similar square footage. Earlier this year, billionaire Howard Marks sold his 20,000 square foot Malibu home. This led me to believe Casa Marbrisa was in the same ballpark, at least size-wise.

How Many Zeros?

iron man 3 house

As with similar posts, I had a couple of different means of figuring out the price of Iron Man’s badass abode. If you’ve read my previous evaluations, you know I do this by finding either comparable homes and their price per square foot or by looking at the average cost per square foot of all homes in an area. In this case, I looked at that Tony Malibu home that sold earlier this year. It sold for $75 million—the most any home was sold for in the area. This comes to $3,750 per square foot of property.

I thought this was a pretty good start, but ultimately pretty low. This led me to wonder how much a view is worth. I’ve read that an outstanding ocean view can add anywhere from 20 to 30 percent to a home’s value. Now, if the view Iron Man has isn’t exceptional, I don’t know what is. So, I added an additional 25 percent to the cost. This brought the price to about $4,690 per square foot.

Putting It Together

Armed with both our fictional home’s square footage and a price, I slapped them together using a handy concept known as “multiplication” to come up with a price point of $117,250,000.

This buys you just the house, and doesn’t include the insane amount of gadgets Stark has threaded through the structure. In fact, if I added in Jarvis—the artificial intelligence that runs the house—the price could easily increase by $150 million. My bet is it would be a lot more, as that price is how much it costs to develop current artificial intelligence programs like Siri—which are, obviously, far less advanced than Jarvis. But  this is moot since Stark would never leave Jarvis behind if he sold his pad.

Bonus Armor

If you do a quick search of the Internet, you’ll come across a rumor that surfaced a while back about a so-called “Iron Man house” that went on the market back in 2010 for $25 million. As far as I can tell, this was a case of the Internet being wrong. I know—how often does that happen? Photos associated with the rumor are said to be of The Razor Residence in La Jolla, CA. There’s also the little fact that The Razor is a only 11,000 square feet, and that’s just not enough room to house Stark and his toys.

MyVoucherCodes, a UK coupon website, calculated how expensive it would be to live like Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby.

They took into account Gatsby's home, parties, servants, and even the cost of maintaining the vast estate described in "The Great Gatsby," and then translated that price to what it would cost today.

The total cost of living like Gatsby would be $34,320,880. The cost of fruit and champagne alone was estimated at $81,300, not to mention his planes, boats, and car.

Gwyneth Paltrow Met Gala

If you're Gwyneth Paltrow, Monday's Met Gala had everything going for it: a custom designed Valentino gown, a punk theme for the former goth girl, and her friend Beyoncé was the honorary co-chair.

But the 40-year-old actress still didn't have fun at the event.

"I'm never going again. It was so un-fun," Paltrow tells USA Today.

But why did the A-lister have such a terrible time? "It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all."

But Paltrow may want to watch her words, as the Met Gala is hosted by Vogue magazine — of which she has appeared on the cover seven times. And if she wants a shot at another, she better not bother editor and event chair, Anna Wintour.

At least Paltrow had her husband Chris Martin to keep her company inside the event — even though they didn't walk the red carpet together because they like to keep their 10-year marriage as "private" as possible, she explains.

Paltrow was more positive about the gala when talking with Entertainment Weekly, praising model Miranda Kerr's Michael Kors dress as "really beautiful. It was a little punk-y. She's just so pretty, it's abnormal."

The actress even asked the Victoria's Secret catwalker "'Is it weird to be that pretty?' And she was like, 'No.'"

Target Finally Scored A Hot Celebrity Designer After Recruiting Him For 5 Years

Phillip Lim for Target

Target just announced an collaboration with Phillip Lim, a hot designer it's been courting for five years.

Lim will release a collection of men's and women's clothing, handbags, and accessories on September 15, Target said on its website

Lim is well-regarded in high fashion and has dressed celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Jessica Biel, and Kanye West.

Target had been courting Lim for more than five years, reports Elizabeth Holmes at The Wall Street Journal. Lim deflected because his brand was "tiny" and he was afraid that he wouldn't be able to design a collection at such a large scale.

But today, Lim's lines are selling in 400 stores, so he felt he was ready.

"I wanted to go in and say, 'I don't need to do this, but I would like to,'" he said.

The collaboration with Lim comes on the heels of Target's highly successful Prabal Gurung line.

Last year, several high-low collaborations flopped, leading to speculation that consumers didn't care about the brand names anymore.

Target's Neiman Marcus collaboration was the most notable example of a line that totally bombed.

But Target's Prabal Gurung line fixed many of the problems that plagued Neiman Marcus.

Instead of featuring obscure products (dog bowls?) from dozens of designers, Target allowed Gurung to simply focus on the florals and dresses he does best.

That strategy paid off, and it looks like Target is staying the course for its collaboration with Lim.
