Beyoncé Is Expertly Manipulating Us All

$
0
0

Beyoncé—Earth-Bound Goddess, Queen of All Divas—has in the past year proved herself an expert at manipulating her image and her audience. She has an archivist, for goodness' sakes. And the way she's embarking on her tour and the release of her new songs, well, that's no different.

While Beyoncé did release "Bow Down/I Been On" as an isolated track, the other songs we've heard—songs leading up to some sort of an eventual album—have come attached to advertisements that promote Beyoncé's various and lucrative sponsorship deals. First we got "Grown Woman," by way of a Pepsi commercial:

And now we have "Standing on the Sun," by way of a commercial for Beyoncé's H&M collection:

All of which is not to say that we don't love these songs. We do. How can you not love Beyoncé? And come on: "Grown Woman" is going to be the jam of the summer. But with these single drops as advertisements, Beyoncé is once again proving herself an expert multitasker, with a penchant for giving her audience exactly what she wants them to have. If you want new songs, she's essentially saying, you are going to have to buy some soda, or think about buying a new blouse.

It's the same attitude Beyoncé projected when she decided to ban professional photographers from her current tour. The move appears to be directly related to the fallout following the Super Bowl. After BuzzFeed published a listicle about Beyoncé's "fierceness," her publicist emailed the site asking them to take down photos that were perceived as "unflattering"—the most bizarre part of which was that said listicle was supposed to be complimentary. After all, Beyoncé was dancing fiercely, and sometimes bodies move in weird ways when that happens.

We've explored Beyoncé's failed attempts to humanize herself in her HBO documentary, but her most recent musical-as-commercial moves just go to show that she has no intention of being like the rest of us. She's Beyoncé, and she's going to sell you what she wants, how she wants it. As she sings in the refrain of "Grown Woman," of which you can see a live performance via Vulture, "I can do whatever I want."

We can take it or leave it. But let's be real: we'll probably take it.

oblivion setSometimes filmmakers seem a little obsessed with the end of the world.

This year alone we've got Oblivion, After EarthCatching FireThe HostThis Is the EndWorld War ZElysium, and The World's End champing at the bit to show us their visions for Earth's demise (or at least radical decline).

With Oblivion new in theaters this weekend, we decided to take a look back at what the end of the world might look like according to movies.

We've helpfully organized them in alphabetical order. Enjoy!

The White House Correspondents' Dinner opened with a shout out to Netflix original series "House of Cards."

Kevin Spacey's title character Frank Underwood negotiated seating charts, hoarded tickets for the dinner, and gave a word of sympathy to host Conan O'Brien.

"I do sympathize Conan ... It must be so hard to write jokes about a town that already is one."

What It's Like Being A 27-Year-Old Hot Shot At The New York Times (And Having The Paper Trash Your Book)

$

New York Times media reporter Brian Stelter is a marvel.

He is one of the paper's higest profile reporters – and he's only 27-years-old.

David Carr, who writes a column on media for the paper, once said: "I still can't get over the feeling that Brian Stelter was a robot assembled to destroy me."

Now, Stelter has written a book. It's called Top Of The Morning, and it's about the ratings war between NBC's Today show and ABC's Good Morning America.

Being a hot shot at the Times hasn't earned Stelter any favors with the paper's book reviewers. On April 22, Ed Bark wrote of Stelter's book: "Edible? Yes. Fulfilling? Not quite."

"It’s a breezy read with more than a little overblown prose, some of it just plain silly."

We had Stelter in for an interview, and asked him what it's like to be such a big deal at such a young age – and if the Times review hurt his feelings:

Real-Life 'Bling Ring' Member Calls Film 'Trashy And Inaccurate'

the bling ring

Next month, Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" will premiere at the Cannes Festival.

The film is based on a string of celebrity robberies that occurred between 2008 and 2009 by a group of teens who became known as "The Burglar Bunch" and "Bling Ring."

However, not everyone is pleased with the film.

"Bling Ring" member Alexis Neiers took to Twitter to dish her feelings on the film after being prompted by Los Angeles Times entertainment writer Amy Kaufman to watch the new trailer.

She said the trailer falsely reflects what occurred in real life calling it "trashy and inaccurate."

Earlier in the month, Neiers appeared behind the film when the initial teaser came out. Neiers took to her blog originally writing positively about Coppola's adaptation:

"When I found out last March that Sofia Coppola was making a movie about the Bling Ring at first I was shocked and then I became optimistic after I heard what her intentions for the film were. I can only hope that this movie does not just tell the story of Los Angeles teens robbing the homes of celebrities."

Actress Emma Watson of "Harry Potter" fame will play a young Neiers in the film.

"The Bling Ring" premieres at the Cannes Festival May 16 before debuting as a limited release in the US starting June 14.

Taylor Swift Supposedly Paid $17.75 Million In Cash For A Rhode Island Mansion

Taylor Swift Watch Hill rhode islandTMZ and celebrity real estate blog The Real Estalker are reporting that Taylor Swift has bought a 11,000-square-foot home in Rhode Island for $17.75 million.

And what's more, the 23-year-old reportedly wired the money directly and paid in cash, which might explain how the cost dropped from the original $20 million asking price.

The home was built in 1930, and sits on the highest point in Watch Hill, RI with 700 feet of shoreline and views of Little Narragansett Bay.

It has eight bedrooms, eight fireplaces, and a pool in the back. The property is both walled and gated, and sits on what is thought to be the highest point of waterfront land on the entire eastern seaboard, according to The Real Estalker.

These listing photos, courtesy of Zillow, are from when the home hit the market for $24 million back in 2011.

This is High Watch in Rhode Island, Taylor Swift's newest mansion.

She paid for the gorgeous home in cash, TMZ reported.

Inside, Swift's new pad has over 11,000 square feet of space.

Robots Fight Aliens In New 'Pacific Rim' Trailer

It's been a long time since we've seen new footage for "Pacific Rim," Guillermo del Toro's alien vs. robot film.

Warner Bros. released an extended trailer for the film today, one that was originally intended to be shown at film convention WonderCon.

In a note accompanying the trailer, del Toro explained the reasoning behind releasing the trailer:

"This was originally intended for only WonderCon, but after listening to so many of you asking for more of the movie online, I think it's time for me to show you more footage. Enjoy, my friends!"

The film feels a lot like "Transformers" taking on aliens from "Cloverfield."

"Pacific Rim" is in theaters July 12.

12 Successful People Share The Biggest Career Risk They Ever Took

$

Bryan CranstonLast week TIME released its annual 100 Most Influential People list, filled with luminaries who have had a major impact on the world.

We had an opportunity to attend the TIME 100 Gala at Lincoln Center in New York City, where we asked influencers: "What's the riskiest career decision you've ever made?"

Chess wunderkind Magnus Carlsen told us from the red carpet that there wasn't "particularly [any] risky decision" that he's had to make, whereas Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey (who was on last year's TIME 100 list) said he's "scared every day."

Bryan Cranston, actor

"The riskiest career decision is to go into this career. You have to be a risk taker of some degree to be able to say, 'Alright, I'm throwing it all out there. Whatever happens, happens. I want to be an actor.' "

"If that means sleeping on someone's couch for the rest of my life, then that's what that is."

Read Cranston's Time100 bio here.

Christopher Fabian and Erica Kochi, developers

Kochi: "Starting an innovation group and having a startup within a very large organization are probably the riskiest things we've ever done. There isn't really any structure to support us, but we just thought it was a good idea so we said 'Lets do it.' And thankfully, we did have support in the end."

Fabian: "I think the riskiest thing that I did last year was presenting a failure fair at the UN. We're very lucky to have the support of our executive director and people inside UNICEF who recognize that with every success is a string of failures."

"However, it's still hard to get up in front of cameras, in front of reporters to talk about the things that didn't work. But talking like that and thinking like that is really important to change the way we do development."

Read Kochi and Fabian's Time100 bios here.

Magnus Carlsen, chess wunderkind

"I decided to be a professional chess player. At that point, it wasn't a particularly risky decision, because I was already, you know, quite good."

Here Are The Hottest Celebrities We Saw At The White House Correspondent's Dinner

$

0

From the lack of political news coming out of the Beltway today, it appears as though Washington is still recovering from the annual bender of celebrity-stalking, all-day cocktails, and shoulder-rubbing that is the White House Correspondents Dinner.

While the main event was obviously the dinner — and the dueling stand-up acts from President Barack Obama and Conan O'Brien— the real draw of the weekend was the plethora of parties before, after (and, thanks to BuzzFeed this year, during) the event.

We dropped by a few of the parties this weekend and even managed to sneak into the dinner for a few minutes. Below are some of the hottest celebs we saw.

Sophia Bush and Sofia Vergara posed for a pic on their way into the dining room:

sophia vergara sophia bush

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and his identical twin brother, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their first Nerd Prom:

julian castro joaquin castro whcd

Kevin Spacey was also one of the hottest stars to see this weekend, thanks to his role as House Majority Whip Frank Underwood on House of Cards

kevin spacey whcd

Plenty of usual suspects made an appearance. Here's Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett chatting with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg before the dinner:

valerie jarrett michael bloomberg whcd

And here's White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough hanging out near the back of the ballroom:

denis mcdonough whcd

Some stranger names were also on the invite list. Duck Dynasty's Willie and Korie Roberston were the hottest reality star appearances at the dinner this year:

duck dynasty whcd

Celebrities at the dinner poured into the exclusive Vanity Fair/Bloomberg party at the French Embassy. Among those we spotted: Katy Perry hanging out with the cast of Modern Family, Elizabeth Banks entertaining a crowd at the bar; a very statuesque Nicole Kidman; Hayden Panettiere getting numerous compliments on her yellow dress; Bradley Cooper; and basically everyone else you've seen on TV this year.

Check out Vanity Fair's full photo gallery here >

One of the other hottest parties of the night was BuzzFeed's alternative soiree, which took place during the actual dinner and was packed with under-40-something political-types who couldn't get a ticket to the main event.

GOP anti-tax guru Grover Norquist made an appearance:

grover norquist buzzfeed whcd

And so did Robyn Wright Penn, better known in D.C. as her House of Cards character Claire Underwood:

robin wright penn house of cards buzzfeed whcd

Although there weren't too many other celebrity sightings at the BuzzFeed party, everyone there was having way too much fun to notice.

This video pretty much sums up the vibe:

The Rolling Stones Summer Tour Is One Of The Most Expensive Ever

$
0

The Rolling Stones

After returning to the stage late last year for a handful of gigs, one of the most iconic bands in rock history are to continue celebrating their 50th anniversary with the release of The Rolling Stones tickets for their biggest tour in six years.

The last time they took to the road with the A Bigger Bang tour, between 2005 and 2007, they performed 147 dates over two years, grossing an astonishing $558 million in the process.

Six years later, with front-man Mick pushing 70, the current (and final???) Stones tour has scheduled only fourteen shows.  At an average stadium capacity of 20,000 for each show, the means roughly 250,000 people will see this tour versus almost 3 million people for the last tour.   The Stones are as popular as ever, and the limited supply means that many fans will, in fact, not always get what they want for this tour.

Below is some data on the tour:

    •    Overall Tour Average: $1130
    •    Tour Get-in Average: $370
    •    Cheapest Get-in: $199 (Honda Center in Anaheim on 5/15)
    •    Cheapest Avg Price: $806 (United Center in Chicago on 6/3)
    •    Avg Price in US: $1260
    •    Avg Price in Canada: $1000
    •    Avg For Tour Opener: $1077 (Staples Center in Los Angeles 5/2)
    •    Get-in For Tour Opener: $264

The smaller size of this tour has increased prices significantly and iconic performers with smaller runs seem to be something of a trend. Prince’s upcoming tour only has only 16 dates and an average price of $476. The Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake Legends of the summer tour is also a limited run of 9 shows, only in baseball and football venues.

While these are three of the most expensive tours of the summer, the prices are even harder to swallow if you consider how much more expensive these tickets are compared to Stones tours of the past. The cheapest face price for their 1989 show at Shea Stadium was $34, while the get-in price for 1994 at Giants stadium was $56. Th cheapest face price ticket for the upcoming tour is a $143, or 155% above the 1994 prices.

Once you get over the prices, though, there's a lot to look forward to. Mick Jagger has already confirmed that the stage design will be based on the group’s iconic Tounge, which will allow him to get up-close and personal with floor seat VIPs.

If last years tour set list were any indication, fans can expect a lot of classics, like “Get Off My Cloud,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, “Paint It Black.” “Sympathy For The Devil,” “It’s Only Rock N’ Roll (But I Like It)” and “Wild Horses”.  Covers also abounded in last year’s tour like Don Nix’s “Going Down” The Beatles’ “I Wanna Be Your Man” and Chuck Berry’s “Around & Around.” Needless to say, the Stones still put on a fantastic show, but if you’re yearning for something more contemporary, last years tour also featured bonus performances from the likes of Florence Welch, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Bruce Springsteen, John Mayer and Eric Clapton. While there's no question that the Stones can still bring it, a little added firepower from A-listnext-generation stars is enough to keep expectations, and prices, sky high.

This morning, Robert Downey Jr., star of "Ironman," rang the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange.

It's something of a role reversal.

Oil trader Philip "PCD" Dunham recently directed us to this clip, of unknown vintage and provenance, on Youtube featuring Downey hanging out on the floor of the NYMEX for a bit, then blasting everyone there.

We can't embed it, but here's the transcript:

If money is evil then that building is hell.

This is the most obnoxious group of money hungry, low IQ, high energy, jack rabbit, f***'in wannabe big-time, small-time, s***-talkin', bothersome irritating bunch of m*****f****** I have ever had to endure for more than five minutes."

Ironman 3 opens Friday.

Yahoo Is Making An Online Show Called 'Losing Your Virginity With John Stamos' (YHOO)

Yahoo is preparing to debut several new Web video series to beef up its original content.

In a statement announcing the shows, one in particular stood out.

"Losing Your Virginity With John Stamos"

Here's the description of the show from Yahoo:

John Stamos interviews celebrities about their first sexual experiences in "Losing Your Virginity with John Stamos," co-produced by Warriors Poets and executive produced by Morgan Spurlock and John Stamos.

Steven Soderbergh

Oscar-winning "Traffic" and "Magic Mike" director Steven Soderbergh's latest project is writing a novella ... on Twitter.

It's titled "Glue" and he posted the first seven chapters of his crime mystery on Sunday.

The 50-year-old has ten previous writing credits to his name, including 1989's "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" and 2002's "Solaris."

Soderbergh hinted he was working on a new writing/Twitter project in February, telling Collider of his Tweeting habits:

"... What will happen is I build up a bunch of stuff and blow it out all at the same time.  I don’t know if that’s the way you’re supposed to do it, but that’s the way it’s happening.  I’m about a week away from another burst of tweets.  It’s fun to have, it’s kind of like having a pseudonym, it’s kind of like being Peter Andrews, I feel I can hide behind that, which is fun."

On his unverified but confirmed account @Bitchuation, Soderbergh announced the new project to his measly 5,737 followers:

The first chapter begins in Amsterdam. The novella even includes some photos to set the scene:

The text continues in a later chapter:

There is drama:

Dan Fredinburg has worked for Google for the past six years. He is a program manager there and has worked on Google Maps, Google's privacy strategy, and YouTube.

For the past few months, he's been dating former One Tree Hill star, Sophia Bush. Bush was previously married ot her OTH co-star, Chad Michael Murray.

It's unclear how the couple met, but it sounds serious. According to Us Weekly, a Bush pal revealed that the star wants to marry the Googler and wouldn't be surprised if they got engaged.

"They're both so passionate about the world," the friend told Us, noting that Fredinburg is "super intelligent."

This isn't the first tech-celebrity couple. Thrive Capital investor Joshua Kushner is dating Victoria Secret angel, Karlie Kloss, for example.

Here's the couple at a Harper's BAZAAR Coachella party in mid April.
