tom cruise oblivion

Tom Cruise's new Sci-Fi flick "Oblivion" came out over the weekend.

Despite some harsh reviews, the film did amazing at the box office.

After a 2012 riddled with flops—remember "Rock of Ages" and "Jack Reacher"—it was Cruise's first non-sequel in seven years to earn more than $30 million at theaters.

His last big box-office hit was 2011's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."

The film made history for breaking December IMAX records previously held by "Tron: Legacy."

However, it opened to a small $12.8 million at theaters.

In honor of Cruise's big return to theaters we're counting down the actor's highest-grossing films worldwide. While "Oblivion" may not make the list yet, it will be in a matter of time.

Jimmy Kimmel's latest “Lie Witness News” segment took place at the Coachella Music Festival last weekend, where he had a correspondent ask festival-goers their opinions on bands that don't exist.

Kimmel opened the funny segment by explaining, "Music fans love knowing about bands that no one else has heard of, so we sent a camera crew to Coachella and we asked people walking into the venue what they thought about a bunch of bands whose names we made up.”

Among the band names people seriously pretend they've heard of: Dr. Shlomo and the G.I. Clinic, The Chelsea Clintons and Get The F**k Out of My Pool.

Here's Why Lauryn Hill Refused To Pay Federal Taxes In The First Place

$
0
0

lauryn hillR&B singer Lauryn Hill is weeks away from landing in federal prison if she can't come up with $500,000 she owes in federal income taxes.

At a sentencing hearing Monday, a New Jersey judge gave the Fugees front woman and mother of six an extra two weeks to come up with the cash.

“This is not someone who stands before the court penniless,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo said at the hearing. "This is a criminal matter. Actions speak louder than words, and there has been no effort here to pay these taxes."

It's been nearly a year since Hill was first arrested for three misdemeanor counts of federal tax evasion, a crime that could earn her as many as three years in federal prison.

She pled guilty to claims she hadn't filed income taxes between 2005 and 2007, a period in which she earned a reported $1.8 million.

At the time, Hill promised to pay $554,000 in federal taxes owed. So far, she's only paid $50,000 and still owes another $400,000 or so in state taxes.

Hill is not exactly destitute.

She co-headlined a tour as a solo act with hip-hop star Nas less than a year ago, and though reviews were pretty awful, she still managed to ink a reported $1 million recording deal for five new songs.

So why not pay her tax tab and be done with it?

The answer is in a 1200-word statement the singer released online shortly after her arrest in June.

Hill gives a long list of complaints about the exploitative music industry, what she calls a climate of "hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism."

Finally she decided she'd had enough: "Having put the lives and needs of other people before my own for multiple years, and having made hundreds of millions of dollars for certain institutions, under complex and sometimes severe circumstances, I began to require growth and more equitable treatment, but was met with resistance."

She retreated to a simpler life and stopped paying taxes as a form of civil disobedience: "I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival."

But the IRS didn't see things her way:

"I conveyed all of this when questioned as to why I did not file taxes during this time period.  Obviously, the danger I faced was not accepted as reasonable grounds for deferring my tax payments, as authorities, who despite being told all of this, still chose to pursue action against me, as opposed to finding an alternative solution.

"My intention has always been to get this situation rectified.  When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes.  This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family."

To avoid penalties for tax evasion, taxpayers must prove they were could not pay due to "reasonable cause and not willful neglect."

Thanks to Hill's little online manifesto, she basically admits to neglecting her taxes on purpose.

Reese Witherspoon may be "embarrassed" of her disorderly conduct arrest, but her good friend Chelsea Handler thinks it's "not that big of a deal."

"She's doing fine, she was just trying to protect her husband," Handler told "Entertainment Tonight" at the E! Upfronts on Monday. "Everybody makes mistakes it's not a big deal."

And Handler would know how Witherspoon is doing, as the E! late night host met up with the actress just two days after her arrest.

The pals dined with Witherspoon's husband, Jim Toth, and Cameron Diaz at New York City's Greenwich Hotel following a screening of her new movie, "Mud."

"Nobody was drunk -- it was pretty tame," an Us Weekly source says of the group, who sipped on San Pellegrino instead. "They all seemed really happy. There was no indication that there was anything wrong."

Watch Handler defend her friend below:

David Spade is also weighing in on the Witherspoon drama, telling TMZ last night: "If you have to explain to someone you're famous, then you're technically not that famous."

History Channel's Hit Miniseries 'The Bible' Will Be Made Into Feature Length Film

history channel the bibleMark Burnett said yesterday that his mega-rated History Channel miniseries The Bibleis being recut into a single three-hour edition for theatrical release.

Burnett revealed the news last night following an NBC Summer Press Day closing panel promoting The Voice, which he executive produces. Burnett said that it has no studio affiliation or distribution agreement yet but that he has “many offers” for getting the revised version into theaters on a global scale.

One option would be to distribute it himself, with a target goal of this fall. “We’re in the position where it’s just a matter of choosing” the right venue and situation, Burnett emphasized. “We could put it into arenas. There are a lot of possible choices we could go with.”

He hinted that going the unconventional route is his likely first choice, a scenario reminiscent of Mel Gibson’s with his feature The Passion Of The Christ back in 2004. “We kind of operate outside the business, we do our own thing,” Burnett said. “It’s a good position to be in.”

Burnett exulted that The Bible was viewed in the United States alone by some 100 million people and tens of millions more internationally. “All of those people who rolled their eyes three years ago and said nobody’s going to watch The Bible on TV, well, they were wrong,” he said. “But I wasn’t surprised. I knew it would work like it did.” How did he know? “God,” Burnett replied. “It was God’s voice. Too many things happened to see it any other way.”

Michael Bay Backtracks On 'Armageddon' Apology: 'I'm Proud Of The Movie'

Michael Bay

Director Michael Bay is eating his words after being quoted in a Miami Herald profile as saying "I apologize for Armageddon."

But Bay didn't stop there, he continued "I would redo the entire third act if I could. But the studio literally took the movie away from us. It was terrible."

But after backlash Tuesday, Bay took to his blog in a post titled "I'm Proud of Armageddon" to clarify his remarks:

One press writer has gone too far in reporting false information. He has printed the bare minimum of my statement which in effect have twisted my words and meaning. I’m not in the slightest going to apologize for the third movie in my movie career, a film called Armageddon. On the red carpet for Pain & Gain some reporters asked me what are you apologizing for, and I said what on earth are you talking about?

What I clearly said to the reporter, is I wish I had more time to edit the film, specifically the the third act. He asked me in effect what would you change if you could in your movies if you could go back. I said, I wish we had a few more weeks in the edit room on Armageddon. And still today Armageddon, is still one of the most shown movies on cable TV. And yes, I’m proud of the movie. Enough said.

Michael

But this isn't the first time Bay has had to clarify his remarks. After the director talked about "rip-off' robot movies, referencing "Pacific Rim" director Guillermo del Toro at Cinemacon recently, he later stated: "I was talking about another movie, at another studio that will remain nameless, while I spoke at CinemaCon in Vegas this Monday."

Bay is currently on a promotional tour for his latest film "Pain & Gain," starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, opening in theaters this Friday.

Gus Van Sant Shot A Sex Scene Starring Alex Pettyfer In Bid To Direct 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'

alex pettyfer magic mike

Two-time Oscar nominee Gus Van Sant has shot a steamy sex scene featuring Alex Pettyfer as Christian Grey in a bid to direct "Fifty Shades of Grey," the film version of the erotic bestseller, individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

The scene, insiders said, is when the ingénue Anastasia Steele loses her virginity to Grey.

Van Sant previously directed "Promised Land" and "Milk" for Focus Features, which has the rights to EL James' novel along with Universal Pictures. Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are producing.

Also Read10 of Hollywood's New Movie Stars

Insiders stressed that Pettyfer was cast as Grey just for the tape, not the movie, though Universal just got into bed with the 23 year-old actor on its sexy remake of "Endless Love," which he is currently shooting in Atlanta. TheWrap was unable to confirm the identity of the actress cast at Steele, the impressionable young woman who falls for kinky billionaire Grey.

Universal and Focus have declined to comment on any list stories, long or short, though a Universal spokesperson said that the studio isn't out to directors or actors, nor have they commissioned any test reels. WME has also declined comment.

Also Read60 Must-See Summer Movies of 2013

Van Sant has not settled on a follow-up film since wrapping "Promised Land," which makes him available to begin working on the project as soon as writer Kelly Marcel delivers a finished draft of the script.

Van Sant was not officially asked by the studio to shoot a test tape. But doing so may indicate how badly he wants the coveted assignment.

Also Read8 Burning Box Office Questions: Is Hollywood Ignoring Women?

Universal and Focus spent at least $3 million in a bidding war to crack the whip on "Fifty Shades of Grey," and they'll certainly be expecting the pop culture phenomenon to be a hit, and a franchise for the studio. Van Sant has only directed one film to cross the domestic $100 million mark -- 1997's "Good Will Hunting" grossed $138 million in the U.S. -- and only one more to cross the domestic $50 million mark, as "Finding Forrester" grossed $51 million in 2000.

Van Sant has long been considered a director who confronts themes such as sex and sexuality head-on, from his debut film the "Mala Noche" to the hustlers in "My Own Private Idaho" to Nicole Kidman's provocative dance in "To Die For" to serving as the executive producer of Larry Clark's explicit "Kids."

Van Sant's candidacy confirms the producers' intentions to hire a high-class filmmaker to deliver a tasteful adaption of the steamy novel. It's possible the success of Steven Soderbergh's male stripper movie "Magic Mike" and its appeal to female audiences is why Van Sant chose to use Pettyfer in his test tape.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" sold to Universal and Focus in March 2012, just two months after WME-repped Van Sant did Focus a favor by stepping in late in the game to replace his "Good Will Hunting" star Matt Damon as the director of "Promised Land," which Focus released to generally strong reviews in December.

Why is Psy sending Gates smiley faces?

The two are both taking part in the international effort to end polio. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is dedicated to fighting the disease and earlier this year Gates announced on the "Colbert Report" that the it would be eradicated in six years.

So when the techie turned philanthropist saw that Psy had become a spokesperson for Rotary's "This Close" campaign, which also aims to end polio, he couldn't help but tweet a picture of the ad and praising the rapper.

17 Gorgeous Images Of The 'Oblivion' Landscape

tom cruise oblivion landscape

Critics may not be sold on Tom Cruise's latest Hollywood blockbuster "Oblivion" but it's pretty unanimous that director Joseph Kosinski delivered another gorgeous world in his followup to 2011's "Tron: Legacy."

The crew filmed in eight locations ranging from California to Iceland to capture some of the movie's breathtaking landscapes to make a desolate Earth look both barren and majestic at the same time.

Kosinski told the Los Angeles Times he set out to depict a world that looked ravaged by war but full of light feeling black holes and space have become ubiquitous in the science fiction genre ever since the late '70s.

“’Alien’ put sci-fi into the darkness — in the hulls of ships, dark planets, always seeming to be night," said Kosinski. "I was interested in inverting that, shooting a daylight film.”

As Cruise said in a featurette for the film, the result is a haunting beauty.

Director Joseph Kosinski set out to do a daytime sci-fi film since he believes so many films in the genre focus on darkness.

Zach Braff Launches $2 Million Kickstarter Campaign For 'Garden State' Follow Up

$
0
0

Zach BraffBREAKING: After getting a rousing reaction from critics and audiences on his 2004 feature directing debut Garden State (it grossed $27 million domestic on a $2.5 million budget), Zach Braff is ready for a follow up.

He wants to direct Wish I Was Here, a film he wants to star in, and which he wrote with his brother Adam.

He’s got top-tier indie producers Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg, the Double Feature Films duo that exec produced Garden State, and such films as Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Get Shorty and Out of Sight. Despite this, Braff couldn’t get the money he needed for a $5 million film that is personal and doesn’t fit a commercial model.

So Braff has launched a Kickstarter campaign he hopes will provide a $2 million budget base that can be bolstered by some foreign pre-sales that will make possible a film they hope to shoot in Los Angeles.

Now, I recently watched Veronica Mars fans not only rise to the $2 million level sought to finance a movie transfer of that popular series, but actually exceed it to provide $5 million in film making resources. I have to be honest, I lamented this growing trend. After years of covering this incredibly fun, decadent business where makers of small budget movies are left lighting cigars with $50 bills when they make fortunes from audiences who only have to buy tickets, that this game had been reduced to a form of pan handling. Where donors are promised tchotchkes, but none of the upside in success. Hell, I reached for my wallet when my childhood crush Karen Black and her husband sought funds for a last chance cancer treatment in France, but for feature film budgets? Really?

Who better to turn my sorry, cynical ass around than Sher? An elegant and respected producer of some of my favorite films, Sher tells me she has donated to Kickstarter campaigns and sees this as a potentially game changing way to empower artists with followings to realize their creative visions by relying directly on the audiences who respond to their work. “I first saw the potential in this about a year ago with the incredible reaction to Veronica Mars, but also how Amanda Palmer tried to raise $100,000 to support a tour, and ended up raising over $1.1 million,” Sher told me. “Even when you make a movie as popular as Garden State, in this market that doesn’t make it easier the next time out and this is a new way to make a movie, involving directly those fans of Zach who want to see his voice realized in another film.”

Sher said they tried to raise money the traditional way, but it just wasn’t going to work unless they made a lot of compromises. The way this works is, if Braff realizes his $2 million funding goal in 30 days, he gets the money. If it overachieves, he has even more money to put on the screen. If he doesn’t reach his goal, he gets zero. From that standpoint, the star of Scrubs and more recently Oz The Great And Powerfulrisks taking a walk of shame that comes when you reach out to your fans and find they don’t exist, or that they rejected you.

“To me, what Zach is doing is courageous, but who he is at heart is a humble guy who makes small personal independent films,” Sher said. “Nobody has ever taken out this high profile a film that wasn’t a sequel, so there is a risk here. It’s not my face on that Kickstarter page. You might be cynical, and people might make fun of it, but it celebrates a new way to get a film made, and that what our business has always been about.”

While I still wonder what will happen when one of these Kickstarter films becomes The Blair Witch Project, a $60,000 budget film that grossed nearly $250 million worldwide. I recall a bond trader brother in law of one of the film’s writers who was cajoled into putting up $90,000 in finishing funds, and who walked away with $25 million when that film scared up ridiculous money. That rarely happens, but if it does, will the donors who made it possible be happy with a signed copy of the shooting script? But until that happens, I say godspeed, Zach Braff, and if I can get him to record my voice mail greeting (he can have complete creative freedom and insult me all he likes), I’m in for $100. Here’s his Kickstarter link, and the release with specific information on Braff’s film and his Kickstarter campaign, which just launched this morning:

Actor/writer/director Zach Braff today launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of the feature film “Wish I Was Here”. Braff will direct and star in the film which is based on an original screenplay he wrote with his brother, Adam Braff. Oscar®-nominated producers Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg (“Django Unchained,” “Contagion,” “Garden State,” “Erin Brockovich,” “Pulp Fiction”) will produce the film through their company Double Feature Films.

Best known for his role on the long-running sitcom “Scrubs,” Braff also wrote, directed and starred in the 2004 instant classic, “Garden State.” Most recently he appeared in director Sam Raimi’s enormously successful “Oz The Great And Powerful.”

“Wish I Was Here” is the story of Aidan Bloom (to be played by Braff), a struggling actor, father and husband who at 35, is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasizing about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he’d always dreamed he’d be as a little kid.

When his ailing father can no longer afford to pay for private school for his two kids (5 and 12) and the only available public school is on its last legs, Aidan reluctantly agrees to attempt to home-school them. The result is some funny chaos, until Aidan decides to scrap the traditional academic curriculum and come up with his own. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn’t find.

With a goal of raising $2 million on Kickstarter in 30 days, the producers hope to shoot the film in Los Angeles beginning this summer. Donor incentives range from personal copies of the script to access to weekly behind-the-scenes video to invitations to the premiere and even a speaking role in the film.

Said Braff: “I am often asked by my fans or by the press when I am promoting films in which I’ve acted, ‘Why haven’t you directed another film since Garden State?’ The truth is, it’s very hard to get small, personal films made without sacrificing some aspect of your artistic integrity (final-cut, casting, minuscule budgets). Crowd-funding sites like Kickstarter could be a game-changer for independent films. Already 10% of the films at the most recent Sundance Film Festival had some Kickstarter money and that’s growing exponentially. Social media has begun to give content creators a chance to appeal directly to their fan base and say, ‘I wanna make something for you, but I’m gonna need your help.’ The supporters of mine across the globe who back this film project will not only get to see something that wouldn’t have been made otherwise, but they’ll get to do so knowing they made it happen.”

“Following the amazing experience we had working with Zach on ‘Garden State,’ we’ve always known we wanted to work with him again and couldn’t wait for the stars to realign,” said Sher. “I first became aware of Kickstarter about a year ago as musician Amanda Palmer’s campaign took off. Then, as we watched as the Veronica Mars campaign explode, it became impossible to deny the fact that crowd-funding is an exceptionally strong force in the future of independent filmmaking.”

Brian Stelter Thinks The New York Times' 'Scathing' Review Of His New Book Was 'An Anomaly'

Brian Stelter

On Monday, bloggers had a field day when the New York Times published its review of New York Times reporter's Brian Stelter’s book, “Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV,” a day before it was to be released. The Daily Beast called it "scathing."

“I read it. I thought it was an anomaly,” Stelter tells TheWrap.

Ed Bark's review surely would not have gotten as much pickup if it wasn’t for the fact that Stelter is a media reporter for the same publication.

Bark opens by writing that the book “on the nefarious network morning show wars ends up being like a breakfast made not quite to order.” He goes on to sum up the book as “Edible? Yes. Fulfilling? Not quite.”

It goes on to point out Stelter’s significant access to “GMA” over “Today” (which is understandable, given with what was going on with Ann Curry aka Operation Bambi), and the use of “a little overblown prose.”

“I expected a tough review from the Times,” the writer tells us. “I want the Times to give tough reviews. That’s partially why I read the Times. But, I’m more interested in readers' reviews.”

“I’ve been overwhelmed by positive messages from people on Twitter,” he points out.

Stelter, who set out to document NBC’s “Today’s” 17-year streak of ratings dominance over ABC’s “GMA,” found himself in the right place at the right time. The ABC show was closing the ratings gap and Curry had a target on her back. What followed was Stelter’s unprecedented access to both shows and the players as the morning show landscape was changing.

Stelter believes that the tone of the review isn't as bad as the press has made it out to be. “I don’t think the review is a significant thing positively or negatively,” the 27-year-old says.

He has been through something like this before. Stelter, who founded and sold the TVNewser blog to MediaBistro in 2004 while still attending Towson College, appeared in the 2011 documentary, “Page One: Inside the New York Times.”

“The review about the Times film was probably the harshest review I’ve ever read of a film,” he says. “Given that experience when I was in that film, I expected a tough review.”

Since Monday, more reviews of “Top of the Morning” have echoed themes in Bark’s piece. But, Stelter is probably not paying them any mind either.

“Frankly, I think the Amazon reviews are going to be so much more interesting for me,” he said. “I’m not just saying that as a line. I really believe it.”

“Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning” (Grand Central Publishing) is currently available at booksellers nationwide.

'Tonight' Show's Move To NYC Will Save NBC $20 Million In Tax Credits

$

Jimmy Fallon Vince Vaughn

When Jimmy Fallontakes the reigns from Jay Leno at the "Tonight Show" come February, a lot more than just who's sitting in the host seat will be different about the show.

For starters, "Tonight" will be moved from its longtime home in Burbank to Fallon's home at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.

And while the late-night show will cost more to produce on the east coast, NBC will actually save money in the long run thanks to New York's tax breaks.

The Hollywood Reporter analyzed the situation, explaining:

New York's state incentives program was amended this year to provide a 30 percent annual tax credit for talk programs filmed before a studio audience of at least 200, as long as they carry a production budget of at least $30 million and have been shot outside New York for at least five seasons ...

A knowledgeable source says the cost to produce 'Tonight' in Burbank is about $1.7 million a week. For a show in production 45 weeks a year, the total cost is about $76.5 million annually. (Not including salaries.)

Using the $76.5 million production budget, a 30 percent credit would then yield $22.95 million in savings.

Despite "Tonight" costing more to shoot in New York, "the increase will be more than offset by the tax credit" — which, according to THR, "is key because network sources say 'Tonight' now generates just $30 million to $40 million a year in profit  a far cry from the $150 million a year the franchise once made."

"Tonight" will also reportedly be eligible for the "Made in New York" marketing credit that provides free advertising on NYC bus shelters, subway cards and on taxi TV.

NBC declined to comment on THR's financial analysis.

5 Breakout Movie Stars Of Summer 2013

man of steel superman

As the temperatures rise, a group of young up-and-coming actors are hoping a string of high-profile movies will help their movie careers heat up.

Some, like Aubrey Plaza and Charlie Hunnam, are already known to television viewers for their work on "Parks and Recreation" and "Sons of Anarchy," respectively. Others, such as Jamie Campbell Bower, soon to make tween girls swoon in the upcoming "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," still enjoy lives of relative obscurity.

If the films that these five actors are headlining connect with audiences, then they will soon find themselves within reach of the A-list. If the movies fail, the climb to the top of the Hollywood heap will get a lot steeper.

Henry Cavill ("Man of Steel")

How He’ll Spend his Summer: Spreading truth, justice and the American way in the Superman reboot "Man of Steel" (June 14).

Upcoming: If "Man of Steel" lives up to the strong buzz, Cavill will finding himself donning Superman's signature cape and tights for many more installments. He is also attached to "The Great Wall," which is set in China in the 15th century and centers on two British warriors squaring off against monsters.

Why He’s Ready to Break Through: With his broad shoulders, cleft chin and matinee idol looks, "The Tudors" star has a flair that recalls Hollywood swashbucklers of old like Eroll Flynn. He's been shortlisted for big parts in the past (James Bond, for instance) but has fallen just short of landing them; "Man of Steel," though, could be the franchise-ready role he's been narrowly missing. Judging by the epic trailer, it looks as if Cavill may have the screen presence to do what Brandon Routh, who played the role in the ill-fated "Superman Returns," could not -- to make this alien-born adventurer relatable and, well, human.

Jamie Campbell Bower ("The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones")

How He’ll Spend his Summer: Helping Lily Collins rescue her mother as the half-human, half-angel bad boy at the center of "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" (Aug. 23).

Upcoming: Depending on the box office, more "Mortal Instruments." After all, the popular young-adult series that inspired the movie boasts six books.

Why He’s Ready to Break Through: He's already toyed with heartthrob-dom with supporting roles in "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and "The Twilight Saga." With "Mortal Instruments," his swoon-worthy charms will be prominently on display. That kind of young adult idolatry can do wonders for a career. Just ask Robert Pattinson.

Aubrey Plaza ("The To Do List)

How She’ll Spend Her Summer: Racking up sexual experiences as a college-bound high school senior in "The To Do List" (Aug. 16)

Upcoming: Assuming it gets renewed, season six of "Parks & Recreation."

The anti-romantic comedy "A Many Splintered Thing" opposite Chris Evans, which should hit theaters later this year.

Also read: 8 Burning Box Office Questions: Is Hollywood Ignoring Women? Will 'The Lone Ranger' Save Westerns?

Why She’s Ready to Break Through: With her deadpan delivery and role as a work-allergic intern on "Parks & Recreation," Plaza steals nearly every episode. Her wit has also given her her memorable supporting turns in films like "Funny People" and "Safety Not Guaranteed," but she's poised to get a lot more attention with her biggest movie role yet. With a cast that includes "SNL" funnyman Bill Hader and a raunchy premise, "To Do List" could be just the vehicle she needs to move from must-see TV to film stardom.

'Homeland' Lead Damian Lewis Stars In This 13-Minute Ad For A $100K Jaguar

Jaguar is pulling out all the stops to promote its first new sports car since 1974, and that includes releasing a 13-minute ad/short film starring Homeland's Damian Lewis.

Lewis, who told the Hollywood Reporter that the Ridley Scott produced gig "fell into [his] lap," was excited to play what he saw as a quirky British character, especially considering that "There's not a lot of comedy in Homeland."

Filmed in Chile — "As a redhead, I stood there occasionally thinking, 'Wow, I really wasn't designed for the desert.'" Lewis told THR — "Desire" is about a man who's about to deliver the $92,000 F-Type but gets embroiled in a gangster's altercation with his wife. (Obviously leading to a chase in the desert).

Lana Del Rey provides a soundtrack with a song called "Burning Desire," which was exclusively written for the car's launch.

Although advertisers have been known to release short films rather than ads, sometimes cutting longer online versions down to TV commercial length, the sweet spot is usually around three and a half minutes. This was the length of Prada's short by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola and Cartier's short that went viral last Christmas.

But going longer isn't unheard of.

Fallon helped launch BMW Films in 2001. A series of approximately 10-minute branded short films, starring Clive Owen as the Driver, were released online to a general audience.

George Bryant of the Brooklyn Brothers, which created the short with RSA Films, told Ad Age that this is "not BMW all over again ... This is drama and narrative -- we were all on board to make something different."

Bryant continued that the Jaguar film also differed in terms of its marketing strategy, building a supposed $9 million in unpaid media buzz by creating online chatter months before it premiered.
