Richie Sambora Quits Concert Tour After Fights With Jon Bon Jovi

Jon Bon Jovi Richi Sambora

On Wednesday, Jon Bon Jovi — who are currently in the midst of a world tour — released a statement saying, "Due to personal issues, Richie Sambora will not be performing on this upcoming leg. All shows will go on as scheduled."

While most assumed "personal reasons" possibly meant substance abuse as the 53-year-old guitarist has struggled with addiction in the past, sources reveal to TMZ that the departure was due to another issue — Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora are "fighting over money."

"Sources directly connected to Bon Jovi tell TMZ that tensions between Jon and Richie have been running high for years and it's finally erupted," reports the website. "One source tells us, 'It's a classic Jagger/Richards blowup."

The site adds that part of the problem is that "Jon constantly belittles Richie."

In September, Sambora spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the group's past tensions:

"Jon’s the leader, and there are no bones about that  and no hard feelings. Everyone has a specific role in the caste system of what this band is, and that’s why it has lasted for 30 years."

But it appears all is not well behind the current concert curtain, as JBJ told the crowd Tuesday in Calgary: "I had two choices: pack up and go home or give you everything I got ... Richie Sambora won't be performing for a while. If there's ever a night I need you, it's tonight, Calgary!"

Meanwhile, Sambora tweeted the next day:

Since news of his departure, Sambora has been vacationing with his daughter in Hawaii.

A Group Of Manhattan Guys Made A Web Series Parody Of 'Girls' Called 'Bros'

bros series girls parody

WILLIAMSBURG — After a marathon viewing session of "Girls" last year, Anthony DiMieri realized just what he could bring to sitcom-land that was missing: the Manhattan-centric, male version of the popular HBO show.

So he wrote his own version, called "Bros."

"They're the same age, the same basic socioeconomic demographic," said DiMieri, 24, of the stars of his new web series compared to the "Girls" cast. "They all probably went to college together, except these guys were in a frat doing keg stands and the girls hung out at the coffee shop and read poetry."

DiMieri's four 20-something male protagonists — who have so far only existed through one episode, launched this week on YouTube— are designed to be outrageous variations of the sporty, preppy "bro cultural archetype," just as "Girls" speaks to the hipster demographic, DiMieri said.

"There's a stigma to being a 'bro' probably equal to the stigma around hipsters," he said. "And I wanted to do the bro-hipster clash."

That "clash" quickly appears in the pilot episode of "Bros," in which the leader of the pack, Drew, gets decked out in purple and ventures to Bedford Avenue from the East Village in a quest to hook up with a hipster girl.

"It's Brooklyn, it's different over there," he says when his friends doubt his chances.

After he and a flannel-shirted female burst through the door of his Manhattan apartment voraciously making out, the other three guys hop on the L train as well on the hunt for Williamsburg women.

As ridiculous as the characters appear, DiMieri said each one is relatable in his own way as "four different bro archetypes" that will develop more if the show finds funding to continue.

"Drew's the Alpha bro, nonchalantly bringing girls home all the time and doesn't have to try...I have a doctor friend like this; the rumor is he'll walk into a bar and the girls will just gravitate toward him," DiMieri laughed. "Tyler is a bully, a jerk, but deep down he wants someone to love so he can show his soft side. Mike is the one in relationships."

The fourth character, John, would likely be the guy "chasing after a girl that’s his really good friend and missing signals from her," DiMieri said of the show's potential future episodes. "This is something people will relate to — me personally very much."

DiMieri, a Fordham University graduate who makes a living doing freelance video production, did not identify as being a "bro" or a "hipster" himself, but the upstate native said his personal experiences have directly inspired the show's narrative.

"I used to live with three girls in a four-bedroom apartment in Williamsburg, and I'd come home from work and there'd be a glass of white wine waiting for me and 'Glee' would be on TV," he said of the popular show. "I'd count all the time I lived there as research."

Now, after living on the Lower East Side and seeing "packs of bros" all the time "going out on hunts for girls," DiMieri said he got his first taste of satisfaction that all the work had paid off — when "Girls" started following him on Twitter this week.

"It was a big deal for me...they only follow like 600 people," he boasted. "I think I'll really make it when Lena Dunham gives me a call and wants to talk about 'Girls' and 'Bros.'"

Stephen Colbert Mocks Jeremy Irons' Comments Comparing Gay Marriage To Incest

On Wednesday, Oscar winning English actor Jeremy Irons compared gay marriage to incest during an odd interview with HuffPost Live.

"Could a father not marry his son?" asked Irons while pondering the tax implications of legalizing gay marriage, specifically the passing of property and inheritance.

Stephen Colbert had a heyday with the comments on last night's "Colbert Report," saying Irons' son, Max, should be on the lookout for a marriage proposal — from his dad.

"You've been together for 27 years," Colbert joked. "It's time to put a ring on it!"

Disney Is Planning Major Layoffs Within The Next Two Weeks

Bob Iger

More cuts are coming to Disney

The Walt Disney Company will lay off a number of workers in the coming weeks, according to Reuters.

Cuts to both Disney's film studio and consumer products division could come as early as two weeks.

Employees from animation and marketing and home video are expected to be laid off.

It's currently unknown how many reductions will occur, but the layoffs are reported to be a cause of an internal audit from CEO Bob Iger who wants to cut costs.

Numbers wise, Disney had record earnings ever in November.

Its stock continues to hit all-time highs reaching $53.53 in January and $57.76 last month.

In February, the company revealed lower first quarter results, attributing them in part to "rising costs of acquiring TV sports rights for its ESPN division," something Iger previously predicted would occur at the end of 2012.

Right now, Disney doesn't need as much man power as it once did at its studio.

The studio is now heavily relying on brands Pixar, Marvel, and, now Lucasfilm to release films.

Marvel has six films set to release now through 2015, Pixar just announced a highly-anticipated sequel to 2003 hit "Finding Nemo," and the new "Star Wars" trilogy is set to begin in another two years time.

These aren't the first layoffs to be announced this week.

Earlier this week, Disney shut down video game company LucasArts, laying off 150 people.

The Mouse House acquired Lucasfilm back in December after initial word of a $4 billion purchase was revealed last October.

Work on future "Star Wars" related games will most likely come from its own troubled game segment, Interactive, which is hoping for a massive success when its new gaming initiative, Infinity, launches later this summer.

Last September, Disney Interactive laid off more than 50 employees

A year prior, the company laid off a reported 200 employees from its interactive unit.

In December, The Walt Disney Company was ordered to pay $319 million to the creator of game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Celador, after losing an appeal for a new trial.

Kardashians Suing Stepmom For Selling Late Dad's Diary To Tabloids

Khloe Kardashian kids

Between giving birth, getting married and divorced all on their E! reality show, The Kardashians are pretty much an open book.

But there's one book the public family wish to remain closed — their late father's diary.

The Kardashians are suing Ellen Pearson, who their father Robert Kardashian married two months before his death in 2003, for allegedly selling personal family possessions to the media — including her late husband's diary, family photo albums and a family holiday photograph.

"The items are said to document the lives of the Kardashians before they were famous and have recently turned up in the media," reports The Hollywood Reporter.

In Touch magazine coverPearson is said to have licensed portions of diaries and photos to Bauer Publishing, owner of In Touch and Life & Style, which have been using the material for sensational magazine covers.

In a lawsuit filed on Thursday in California federal court, the Kardashians and Kris Jenner claim that Pearson has engineered a "despicable and unlawful scheme to hold in secret and convert, and now exploit ... private personal and copyright protected" material.

According to the Kardashians, their father’s will gave them the rights to the “bulk of his personal tangible and intangible property" and they're now arguing that the diary and family photo albums are "incontestably" their inheritance and property.

"The reality stars are further alleging that Pearson willfully hid the possessions, and failed to declare them when she filed for bankruptcy in 2010, despite knowing they held monetary value as a result of the family’s ever-growing fame," reports GossipCop.

Instead, the reality TV family is arguing that Pearson hold onto the diaries and photos “with the express intent to one-day capitalize and exploit the valuable property and celebrity of the famous Robert Kardashian.”

They’re suing for “conversion and copyright infringement and demanding a full and complete accounting and imposition of a constructive trust,” according to The Hollywood Reporter, which adds that the sisters are seeking “at least $500,000 in damages, plus more in profits, statutory damages, punitive and exemplary damages.”

For $35K You Can Watch 'Jurassic Park' In 3D At Home This Weekend

jurassic parkUniversal is re-releasing Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" in 3D this weekend.

But now you can relive the dinosaur thriller in the comfort of your home — provided you have a home theater and $35,000 on hand.

Think of it as Blockbuster for the super wealthy.

Prima Cinemas allows members to watch new theatrical releases in their own private theaters.

Backed by Best Buy Capital and Universal, Prima Cinemas works with a few Hollywood studios to make new releases available to rent for $500 a piece for 24 hours.

The $35,000 price tag is for a digital box that streams the movies over the Internet.

The catch?

If you want to watch the movie more than once, you have to shell out another $500.

Right now, members can view "Admission" featuring Paul Rudd and Tina Fey, and Ryan Gosling's "The Place Beyond the Pines."

In addition to "Jurassic Park" in 3D, Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" is set to become available.

The hardware is super high tech as well. The box can only be activated through the fingerprint of the subscriber.

Who pays this much for a screening in their home?

Prima Cinemas CEO Jason Pang told The Hollywood Reporter that sports franchise owners, Hollywood power brokers, and members of the financial community use the service.

But don't try to invite everyone you know over for a viewing party. Prima Cinemas inspects private theaters to make sure they don't have more than 25 seats.

Of course, that wouldn't stop people from sitting on the floor.

'Mad Men' Wouldn't Be On TV If It Weren't For This Woman

$

0

Christina WayneYou will not meet a lot of TV executives who were once writers and directors themselves. This might go some way in explaining how Christina Wayne, now the president of Cineflix Studios, has had such a keen eye when it comes to selecting incredible (and oft-overlooked) scripts and getting them made. Wayne’s credits include not one but two game-changing shows, Mad Men and Breaking Badposter children for the current golden age of television we’re all living in.

Wayne was a working screenwriter in Hollywood (no small feat there) who had a champion in legendary producer Robert Evans—she had scored an audience with the Chinatown producer (among a slew of other classics) through pluck and determination alone. After directing music videos, she wrote E!’s True Hollywood Story about the short life of actress Dominique Dunne, and eventually went on to write and direct the 2001 film Tart for Lionsgate, set in the milieu of an Upper East Side private school in Manhattan, with Wayne culling her own background as creative fodder. The point is this was a creative, a woman whose growing list of credits and contacts spoke of a bright future in Hollywood.

Yet Wayne returned to her hometown of New York City, where she ended up taking a meeting with AMC in 2005. When she was first made aware of their interest to meet, she had to be told it was the TV channel, not the theater chain. That she ended up taking a role, first as a consultant, and then as the senior vice president of scripted series and mini series, goes part of the way in explaining why the letters ‘AMC’ now resonate to TV-lovers as ‘American Movie Channel.’  Wayne and her team were primarily responsible in creating that brand recognition (and so much more) thanks to their keen sense of great material.

Megan and Don DraperOne of the first things Wayne did was help produce the miniseries Broken Traila western starring Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church. It was a critical and commercial smash—drawing 9.8 million viewers and winning four Emmys in 2007 (including Outstanding Miniseries). While they were in production on Broken Trail, Wayne was hunting for a series, and what happened next is partly what the above video is about. Needless to say, Wayne’s four years at AMC, from 2005-2009, helped lift the channel from the basic cable hinterlands to one of the premiere destinations to witness some of the golden age of TV’s best work. Finding, supporting, and producing Mad Men and Breaking Bad a career does make.

Yet Wayne is not done. As president of Cineflix, she is now running an international studio and distributor, spending the majority of her days doing what she loves most, reading material, listening to pitches, developing projects, producing series and selling them domestically and internationally. One of those series, Copperwas a project Wayne had taken with her from AMC. A Gangs of New York-era crime series set in 1860s New York in the city’s legendary Five Points neighborhood, Copper became BBC-America’s first scripted program (its success has helped pave the way for its newest show, Orphan Black). Producing Copper along with BBC-A, a Canadian and a German film company, has revealed a new set of skills in Wayne’s repertoire, managing multiple international partners, the creatives involved with the epic series, and building an entire, historic set in an old car plant.  Copper’s second season starts this June.

Television is enjoying an extended period of almost shocking creative excellence. The small-screen universe has been lit up by stars like James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Jon Hamm, Glen Close, Claire Danes and Lena Dunham. We’re living in a world where show creators have become household names (and show runners household titles)–David Chase, David Simon, David Milch, Joss Whedon, Matthew Weiner, Vince Gilligan and Lena Dunham (again!) to name a few. Yet it’s the lesser known lights like Christina Wayne who have found, nurtured, protected and ultimately promoted these projects we adore. It’s something to remember when you tuck in for your two hour premiere of Mad Men this Sunday. The golden age of TV has happened  because of people like Christina Wayne who see great material where others see risk or worry, like, oh I don’t know, knowing that a story about science teacher who ends up selling meth might just be a classic in the making.

What You'll See On The New Vice Media HBO Show Everyone's Been Talking About

HBOVICE_RYAN DUFFY_PHILIPPINES copy

Tonight at 11:00 pm EST, Brooklyn based media company, Vice Media, premiers a half hour documentary show on HBO, and there really isn't anything like it on TV.

That's always been the point.

For years, Vice has been making documentary videos about some of the most dangerous corners of the world. They called them Vice Guides. Think: Liberian slums, long North Korean highways, and lots and lots of guns.

Now the company is teaming up with HBO (the show is produced by Bill Maher and Fareed Zakaria is a consulting producer) to take that world beyond the internet.

Tonight, expect Afghan child suicide bombers, an interview with the Taliban, and yes, definitely some violence. It's a huge part of what everyone's been saying about it.

The New York Times wrote that at Vice's "ludicrously luxurious" premier party, some of the guests were visibly shaken by the "stomach churning" screening.

Rolling Stone was even more clear. The magazine wrote, "HBO Courts Danger With Gonzo Vice Show," and said that it still "feels a little like your buddy from the bar just happened to be wandering through eastern Afghanistan with a camera crew."

Perhaps that's true, but it isn't the point. Vice has spent years building a fiercely loyal audience that expects insane access, raw footage, and the persistent threat of danger. It works because no one else has it.

Or more importantly, because no one else will do it.

Check out a clip of the show below:

We've got you covered with this catch-up slideshow.

But business is booming. Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is expanding more than ever.

Unfortunately not everyone is going to have a role in the bigger offices. After rising in the ranks at SCDP, Peggy left for a Copy Chief position at Ted Chaough’s agency. She and Don had a very bittersweet farewell.

Don Draper's Fake Ads Are Terrible Compared To Real 1960s Ads

Jon Hamm Don Draper Mad Men

Last year, we told you about the real brands that have appeared in Mad Men and the fake ads that the staff of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce have created for them over the years.

Since then, a whole new bunch of clients have come and gone at Don Draper's agency.

So in advance of the premiere of "Mad Men" Season 6 on AMC this Sunday, we have once again trawled the agency's archives to compare the fake ads of Sterling Cooper vs. the ones that actually ran back in the 1960s.

Those clients include Playtex, Mohawk Airlines, American Airlines and Samsonite luggage.

Turns out the fictional ads are vastly different from the real ones — and that Sterling Cooper's were often much worse. Hindsight is 20/20, of course ...

Sterling Cooper's Belle Jolie lipstick ad from Season 5 ...

Belle Jolie was one of few made-up brands on the show. In reality, cosmetics companies had been using photos instead of drawings in their ads for years. This one was from 1963.

Sterling Cooper's ad for Samsonite makes little sense (until you learn that she hates it because it's empty). Even then, no client would ever allow the word "hate" next to their brand like this.

Republicans Want To Know If Beyonce And Jay-Z Had Permission To Go To Cuba

RTXY8UI

Two US Republican lawmakers want to know if popular American pop star Beyonce and her husband, rap singer Jay-Z, had the US government's permission to travel to Cuba despite an economic embargo.

Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida on Friday sent a letter to Adam Szubin, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control at the Treasury Department, requesting information on the type of license Beyonce and Jay-Z had received before traveling to Cuba.

"As you know, US law expressly prohibits the licensing of financial transactions for 'tourist activities' in Cuba," the pair wrote.

They went on to say that these restrictions were in place because the Cuban government was listed by the US State Department as one of four state sponsors of terrorism and has "one of the world's most egregious" human rights records.

"Cuba's tourism industry is wholly state-controlled; therefore, US dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of oppression that brutally represses the Cuban people," Ros-Lehtinen and Diaz-Balart wrote.

Beyonce and Jay-Z created a stir Thursday as they toured the streets of Old Havana, with hundreds of Cubans turning out to catch a glimpse of the US power couple.

Celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary, they visited historical landmarks in the heart of Old Havana, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. They snapped pictures and spoke with local residents.

Beyonce -- who sang the US national anthem at President Barack Obama's inauguration in January and performed in the Super Bowl half-time show in February -- was wearing a short mustard yellow dress with black and white accents.

After visiting the cathedral, the couple had lunch in a nearby restaurant.

On Wednesday night, they also had dinner at La Guarida, one of Havana's most exclusive restaurants.

Americans are not allowed to visit Cuba and spend money there unless they have special US government permission.

According to regulations posted on the Treasury Department's website, "unless authorized by a general or specific license, any person subject to US jurisdiction who engages in any Cuba travel-related transaction violates the regulations and may be subject to penalties."

Criminal penalties for violating the regulations could result in up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in individual fines.

Thousands of Americans nevertheless visit Cuba every year without US permission, often via third countries. But back home they are rarely prosecuted for their rule-breaking unless they flaunt their defiance of the rules.

Beyonce is a strong and vocal supporter of President Obama and helped raise money for his 2012 re-election campaign.

In their letter, the Republican lawmakers noted that numerous press reports described the couple's trip as tourism and that the Cuban government had touted it as such in its propaganda.

This Is The New, Hot Way To Steal HBO, And HBO Doesn't Even Really Care (TWX)

$

The secret is out: The smart way to watch HBO without paying for HBO is HBO Go, HBO's excellent online service.

All you need to do is find a family member, or a friend, with an HBO subscription, get their username and password, and boom, you can watch all of HBO's excellent programming through the web.

A lot of people have known about this for years, but it's starting to get mainstream attention.

BuzzFeedwrote about it a few weeks ago, and today, the New York Times is writing about.

The New York Times asked HBO how it feels about the password sharing. On the record, it seems like HBO is pretty much shrugging.

But to the collective relief of nearly everyone I know, the companies with whom I spoke seemed to have little to no interest in curbing our sharing behavior — in part because they can’t. They have little ability to track and curtail their customers who are sharing account information, according to Jeff Cusson, senior vice president for corporate affairs at HBO. And, he said, the network doesn’t view the sharing “as a pervasive problem at this time.”

This is a great opportunity for HBO. It can get users hooked on its shows, then crack down on password sharing eventually, and hope that a high percentage of those people feel compelled to pay for HBO.

Or, alternatively, the people sharing HBO passwords are young, and unable to afford HBO. When they get older, they'll be willing to pay for HBO.

Nine Political Lessons From HBO's Hit Show 'Game Of Thrones'

$
0
0

game of thrones

Politics is notoriously brutal, filled with wildly ambitious characters jockeying for influence in a competitive world, where money goes a long way and nobody is safe.

Incidentally, that summarizes most of the plot of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, based on a series of popular novels by George R.R. Martin.

Just like in Washington, competing factions loaded with cash are fighting for their political survival, with all eyes on the top prize.

Here, we dissect some of the best political lessons from the land of Westeros.

Note: This slideshow contains spoilers for seasons 1 and 2 only.

1. Debt-based financing is very risky.

At the start of the show, King Robert Baratheon has run the crown into a vast amount of debt to the richest man in Westeros, Lord Tywin Lannister.

As a result, Baratheon's obligations to the Lannister family make effective management of the seven kingdoms difficult. He's married to a Lannister, protected by Lannisters, advised by Lannisters and eventually killed by particularly ambitious Lannisters.

The main takeaway from this? Owing a debt to one group — whether it's sovereign debt holders, lobbyists, interest groups or campaign donors — risks both your occupation and ability to govern.

2. A devoted field operation is crucial for political success.

In one of the final episodes of season two, Tyrion Lannister returns from being held captive to learn that his father Tywin has started a war with the Starks.

Normally, Tyrion would have been disregarded and removed from the family business, but he returned with a hoard of hill people eager to kill in exchange for superior equipment.

The main takeaway? One of the best assets for a politician is a wildly energetic base of support — be they Rep. Ron Paul's libertarians, President Obama's Organizing for America, or the crowd of people waiting for the word to run Hilliary Clinton's 2016 campaign.

3. Never trust political consultants.

In season one, Ned Stark is brought to the capitol city of Kings Landing to serve as the Hand of the King.

Ned quickly placed his trust in Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish, the well-connected Master of Coin. This went very badly for Ned, as Baelish was more concerned with his own financial and political stability than advancing Stark's career.

Eventually, Baelish assisted the rival Lannister faction in arresting and eventually killing Stark.

The situation could hold a lesson for the Republican Party. In the wake of the 2012 election, many conservatives have claimed that the party trusted political consultants too much during the course of the election, and contributed to the GOP's losses.

AMC's premiere of Season 6 of Mad Men featured a nice ad for Johnnie Walker starring Christina Hendricks — who plays Joan, of course.

Hendricks has been JW's pitchwoman for several months and the ad isn't new.

But liquor brands have limited TV budgets because of the age/audience restrictions surrounding the promotion of hard booze on television.

JW clearly isn't stupid. It's after 9 p.m. on a school night, it's Mad Men, and Hendricks, as usual, looks like she could peel paint off the walls just by walking into the room. Hence the buy.
