next generation xbox render

Microsoft originally planned to unveil details about a new Xbox console this month, but we've learned from The Verge that the announcement has been pushed back to May.

Reports suggest an event will take place May 21st instead of the originally planned date of April 24th.

Next month's event won't reveal too much about the next-generation console, instead it will just focus on the very first details. Microsoft is planning on a full reveal at the E3 gaming conference in June.

There have been rumors suggesting the next generation Xbox will require an always on internet connection and feature completely redesigned hardware.

Earlier this year we also found some rumored hardware specs that give us a better idea of what we can expect from the next-Xbox:

  • Blu-Ray player
  • WiFi and Ethernet for connecting to the Internet and playing games online
  • 8 GB of RAM
  • USB 3.0 ports for accessories
  • HDMI port that works with 3D TVs and ultra high-resolution "4K" TVs
  • Hard drive for game saves, music, videos, downloadable games, etc.
  • Built-in Kinect sensor for motion-controlled gaming

The 'Evil Dead' Rise Above 'Jurassic Park' — Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

evil dead

It was a monster rewind at theaters this weekend.

Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" returned to theaters in 3D while Bruce Campbell's horror classic "Evil Dead" scared its way back to the box office 30 years later, and both films delivered.

The success of the dinosaur thriller was of little surprise considering the film was one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

One of the big draws to the "Evil Dead" remake, unlike others, was having the original creators—Campbell and Sam Raimi—on board to produce the film.

All together, Raimi's having a great year at the box office so far. From Disney's return to "Oz" to producing the reboot of Bruce Campbell's "Evil Dead" scare, both films have been drawing moviegoers out to theaters after what was an awfully slow beginning to the  year.

Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper's "The Place Beyond the Pines" earned $695,000 in its second limited week in 30 theaters. That may not sound like much, but the film had an average of $23,167 per theater. Compare that to "The Evil Dead" which earned an average of $8,595 per theater.

Out of the top ten this week is James Franco's "Spring Breakers." The film, which cost $5 million to produce, has earned $15.4 million worldwide.

Here are this week's winners and losers in Hollywood:

10. "Admission" rounds out the top ten with $2 million after dropping another two spots this weekend. The Tina Fey dramedy has not had a great run at theaters. In three weeks, the film has earned $15.4 million. The film cost an estimated $13 million to produce.

9. Though Halle Berry's 911 film, "The Call," dropped two places earning $3.5 million this weekend, the film has managed to earn $45.5 million — three times the amount of "Admission" in four weeks time on the same budget.

8. Stephanie Meyer's alien love film, "The Host" falls hard in its second week earning $5.2 million—less than 50 percent of its intake opening weekend. With a worldwide gross of $30.4 million, the next installment from the "Twilight" author is faring poorly overseas earning only a third of its gross internationally. The film cost an estimated $40 million to produce.

7. Disney's "Oz the Great and Powerful" is still winning big in week five. The film only dropped 30 percent in ticket sales this weekend. The film has brought in a grand total of $454.1 million worldwide, earning more of its money overseas.

6. Tyler Perry's "Temptation" (a.k.a. the film Kim Kardashian appeared in) dropped a massive 53.8 percent this weekend earning $10 million. Last weekend, the film was in the top three. Despite that, its drop was less than that of Perry's highest-grossing film, "Madea Goes to Jail."

5. Gerard Butler's "Olympus Has Fallen" holds steady at theaters earning $10 million in week three. The thriller, about a White House takeover, has earned most of its $76.4 million earnings (93 percent) at home. The film is Butler's first success after "Playing for Keeps" and "Chasing Mavericks" flopped last year at theaters — a reminder for future directors that he is a big draw as an action star as opposed to a romantic comedy winner.

4. "Jurassic Park" roared back to theaters in 3D earning $18.2 million. Compared to other 3D re-releases, its third after "The Lion King" in 2011 and "Star Wars" last year.

2. [TIE] DreamWorks Animation's "The Croods" see the lowest drop in the top ten at theaters this weekend earning $21.1 million. The cavemen flick has now earned $330.7 million in three weeks. The overseas box office has made up nearly two-thirds of those earnings.

2. [TIE] "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" dropped nearly 48 percent in week two with $21.1 million putting it in line with the 2009 original which earned $22.3 million in its second week in theaters.

1. "Evil Dead" manages to scare up an impressive $26 million. The remake/reboot to the original 1983 film cost an estimated $17 million to make. However, it doesn't manage to become the largest horror opening of the year. (That honor still belongs to "Mama.")

Snoop Dogg Doesn't Think Being Gay Is 'Acceptable' In The Rap World

Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg (or Snoop Lion, whatever you want to call him these days) is a vocal supporter of gay marriage, but that doesn't mean he thinks the music world is ready for a gay rapper.

When asked by The Guardian if Frank Ocean coming out last year would pave the way for other gay rappers, Snoop had a somewhat surprising response.

"Frank Ocean ain't no rapper. He's a singer. It's acceptable in the singing world, but in the rap world I don't know if it will ever be acceptable because rap is so masculine."

He continues, "It's like a football team. You can't be in a locker room full of motherf----- tough-ass dudes, then all of a sudden say, 'Hey, man, I like you.' You know, that's going to be tough."

But, Snoop clarifies that he personally feels different, "I don't have a problem with gay people. I got some gay homies."

TMZ caught up with Snoop this weekend in L.A. where he tried to explain his comments, saying: "I'm not trying to change you, just trying to be a better me." Watch below.

It was originally estimated to sell for near $50,000.

Created by toy designer Reuben Klamer, the prop was designed and created in two weeks.

It's only seen on the third episode of the series on Sept. 22, 1966, "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

William Shatner's character, Captain Kirk, used the rifle to kill a man threatening the crew.

The most expensive "Star Trek" prop sold at auction was a Starship Enterprise model used on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in 2006 for $576,000.

This Up And Coming Model Saved $500,000 Before The Age Of 30

ashley stetts frugal model

Ashley Stetts, a.k.a. The Frugal Model is also a blogger who shares money-saving advice and lifestyle tips on TheFrugalModel.com.

Having grown up in a household that reused paper towels and wiped windows with Win-dox, not Windex, the Ashley of today brings a thrifty perspective, a lot of personal experience and wise decisions to the financial table.

MBT: Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and how you were raised to manage your money.

TFM: I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada by a single father who could have taught a class on frugal living. He had to sacrifice a lot to be able to provide for us, and it taught me that you can still live happily with little. I began working as soon as I was able to, and saved most of it since I knew I would likely have to pay for most of my college education. I wouldn’t have had it any other way — I attribute all of my money smarts to this upbringing.

MBT: How on earth did you save all that dough at such a young age?!

TFM: I am so fortunate that education in Canada is subsidized by the government, so I didn’t have to take on the incredible student debt most Americans have to. So while I was in college I was also working part time selling cell phones at the mall, bartending at a nightclub on the weekends, and modeling when I could. Whatever money didn’t go towards school was put into savings. When I moved to NYC I got lucky working as a fit model — fitting clothes for designers and making really great money. I never gave up my night job though, and continued working both jobs so that I could build a comfortable savings. On top of that, I always lived far below my means. I lived in an apartment half the price of what I could probably really afford, I never took cabs or paid full price for things.

MBT: What inspired you to start your blog?

TFM: Seeing so many young people making good money in debt because they just aren’t paying attention to their spending habits made me crazy. I realized that we just aren’t generally educated on smart spending and money allocation growing up – and this is especially a topic that seems to be taboo to women. I wanted to create a place for young women to come and get funny, light posts about simple, everyday money saving tips that let you still live a fashionable life.

MBT: Being a glamorous model living in NYC, what are your shopping habits like?

TFM: I very rarely buy things at full price. I am a huge fan of comparison shopping online for high-end pieces, and I’m not afraid to buy things from eBay (even second-hand). When I do go out shopping, I always go out with a mission for just what I need — and I always make sure I shop where I can return in case I get home and realize I don’t actually need it!

MBT: What’s the wisest money decision you’ve ever made?

TFM: The wisest money decision I ever made was working hard to ensure that I would never have to depend on someone else for financial security. It sounds pretty straightforward, but so many young people want to be wealthy, but just aren’t interested in doing what it takes to get there. I was making good money at my day job, but I continued working four nights a week at a club until 4 am because I knew that I would only be able to pull that off in my 20′s. It was with that extra money that I was able to invest and have financial independence at such a young age.

MBT: What’s the worst money mistake you’ve ever made?

TFM: Not being better educated on investing sooner. I kept my money safe in a bank account earning very little interest during a time when I could have been making much greater returns. As a young woman, the world of finance, stocks and bonds were a foreign language, and it’s difficult to trust people with your money. I really wish that I had taken the time to learn about my options and found someone to guide me when the market was better.

MBT: Tell us about your favorite frugal thing you enjoy doing.

TFM: I would have to say eBay is my guilty frugal pleasure. I love hunting for designer clothes heavily discounted on eBay — and generally when i buy something new, I will turn around and list something of mine that I no longer wear. It’s almost like a swap, and I feel like I’m getting something new for free. It’s also exciting seeing people getting into bidding wars for your stuff — sometimes I end up getting more for my old stuff than what I originally paid for!

MBT: What do you envision for your future (financially and otherwise), and when do you plan on retiring?

TFM: I’m really hoping to bring The Frugal Model to an even larger audience so that the message and ideas of the brand can be more recognized. It would make me so proud to have this labor of love be the vehicle that brings me to great financial success, especially since modeling is a job that has an expiration date! I have no idea when I will be able to retire, but I’m making sure there’s money stashed away now so I can be a pimped-out grandma.

MBT: How do you manage/grow your savings?

I currently have my savings account in an online-only Ally account. This way I’m earning slightly more interest, but more importantly, the money is not easily accessible. Every time I accumulate excess money in my checking, I transfer it to this account. This method has really worked for me to grow my savings. I also have money invested in a CD for higher interest earnings (but again, I wish that money was in a better earning investment — maybe if I had been better educated!)

MBT: What’s your stance on using credit cards?

TFM: I’m a fan of credit cards if you are able to pay them off in full each month. If you are not able to do this, it means you’re just spending money you don’t have, and spending money on interest — that makes whatever you’re buying even more expensive. It’s a frugal person’s nightmare. When used properly and paid off, credit cards are great for building good credit, and cards that let you earn points can save you a ton of money on flights and hotels.

MBT: What is your favorite frugal advice for others?

TFM: Work hard and live below your means. That equation will lead you to where you want to be with your money.

Ashley is a model living in NYC and the creator of TheFrugalModel.com, where she gives tips and advice for saving money and living luxe for less.

The 'Avatar' Sequels Will Use Groundbreaking Underwater Technology

Avatar

When "Avatar" came out in 2009, James Cameron helped reinvent the way both 3D and motion capture are used in film.

Now, he'll be taking that technology one step further in the next two "Avatar" sequels.

Producer Jon Landau revealed at the 2013 NAB Technology Summit on Cinema that James Cameron will use motion capture performance in water in the upcoming sequels.

“We could simulate water [in computer graphics], but we can't simulate the actor's experience, so we are going to capture performance in a tank," said Landau.

Motion capture records the actions of actors in order to replicate it into digital models in computer animation. Normally, it's used above ground, and was utilized in the first "Avatar" to make actors Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington into blue Na'vi.

zoe saldana avatar

“We want to take advantage of the technologies brilliant people are putting out to make the next two movies even more emotionally engaging and visually tantalizing, and to really wrap up the story arc of our two main characters," said Landau.

Landau is a producer on the next two "Avatar" sequels and has worked with Cameron on "Titanic."

Last year, Cameron completed a solo dive to the deepest part of the ocean in the Mariana Trench as part of an expedition on deep-ocean research.

This has led some to believe that Cameron's dive had something to do with "Avatar."

Landau says that isn't so.

He also shared they are also considering using high frame rates (HFR) in the sequels.

Peter Jackson first experimented with HFR when releasing "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" last year.

Normally, audiences view films at 24 frames-per-second (fps). Jackson filmed "The Hobbit" in 48fps.

The technology received a mixed reception from audiences. Some claimed the experience left them feeling sick, while others praised Jackson for the fluidly of character movement on screen.

Landau, who was impressed with Jackson's use of HFR, didn't see any reason to not make films at even 60fps.

LL Cool J And Brad Paisley's 'Accidental Racist' Is The Strangest Music Collaboration Ever

ll cool j brad paisleySome were wondering why LL Cool J was at the Country Music Awards last night since he's a hip-hop artist.

He teamed up with Brad Paisley for a collaboration called "Accidental Racist" about the relations between southerners and African Americans.

The ballad contains comparisons between du-rags and Confederate flags, the Ku Klux Klan, and shout outs to Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln.

The song will be featured on Paisley's album "Wheelhouse" out tomorrow.

Here are some of the lyrics:

"I try to put myself in your shoes and that's a good place to begin
But it ain't like I can walk a mile in someone else's skin."

"Dear Mr. White Man, I wish you understood
What the world is really like when you're livin' in the hood."

"Feel like a new fangled Django, dodgin' invisible white hoods."

"If you don't judge my du-rag
I won't judge your red flag."

"If you don't judge my gold chains
I'll forget the iron chains."

"RIP Robert E. Lee but I've gotta thank Abraham Lincoln for freeing me, know what I mean."

Here are the complete lyrics.

Read Meryl Streep's Heartfelt Statement About Her 'Iron Lady' Character, Margaret Thatcher

Meryl Streep Iron LadyMeryl Streep won an Oscar in 2012 for he portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the biopic, "The Iron Lady."

After news of Thatcher's death on Monday, Streep released a heartfelt statement about the former prime minister, calling her "a figure of awe for her personal strength and grit”:

Margaret Thatcher was a pioneer, willingly or unwillingly, for the role of women in politics.

It is hard to imagine a part of our current history that has not been affected by measures she put forward in the UK at the end of the 20th century. Her hard-nosed fiscal measures took a toll on the poor, and her hands-off approach to financial regulation led to great wealth for others. There is an argument that her steadfast, almost emotional loyalty to the pound sterling has helped the UK weather the storms of European monetary uncertainty.

But to me she was a figure of awe for her personal strength and grit.To have come up, legitimately, through the ranks of the British political system, class bound and gender phobic as it was, in the time that she did and the way that she did, was a formidable achievement. To have won it, not because she inherited position as the daughter of a great man, or the widow of an important man, but by dint of her own striving. To have withstood the special hatred and ridicule, unprecedented in my opinion, leveled in our time at a public figure who was not a mass murderer; and to have managed to keep her convictions attached to fervent ideals and ideas — wrongheaded or misguided as we might see them now –without corruption. I see that as evidence of some kind of greatness, worthy for the argument of history to settle. To have given women and girls around the world reason to supplant fantasies of being princesses with a different dream: the real-life option of leading their nation; this was groundbreaking and admirable.

I was honored to try to imagine her late life journey, after power; but I have only a glancing understanding of what her many struggles were, and how she managed to sail through to the other side. I wish to convey my respectful condolences to her family and many friends.

Rock Band Yeah Yeah Yeahs Don't Want You Using A Smartphone At Their Shows

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Sign

Last night, indie rockers Yeah Yeah Yeahs posted a new rule for concertgoers at their show in Webster Hall in New York.

"Please Do Not Watch The Show Through A Screen," read the sign, which was tweeted by Spin Magazine.

Reaction on Twitter in support of the message was overwhelming, a sign that smartphone users' growing "addiction" frequently aggravates others.

Many tweeted that they wished all concert venues would post rules against smartphone use at shows.

Last month, we reported on a new IDC study that reveals how often smartphone users are engaged with their phones. IDC's research shows that 79% of users look at their phones within 15 minutes of waking up, and 50% check Facebook in movie theaters.

Today's music fans seem to be as busy at live shows recording the event as they are actually watching it firsthand. And to the musicians who look out on a sea of smartphones where their fans once were, this can be frustrating.

"Ha, amazing!" indie rock band Ra Ra Riot tweeted in response to the sign, which asked fans to "Put that s--- away as a courtesy to the person behind you" and to the band. Spin reported that for the most part, the crowd obliged.

Smartphone users who absolutely must stay on their devices at concerts would do well to take a look at this handy how-to manual by Gizmodo's Sam Biddle.

Nearly 150 Disney Layoffs Are Coming This Week

bob iger walt disney companyDisney shares are trading around their all-time high.  But Wednesday looks like the day Disney will drop the ax for its expected layoffs

I have learned that about 150 people at Walt Disney Studios will receive pink slips.

Sources say the cuts will come from across all of Disney Studios businesses, including the music and NYC-based theatre departments.

At this point it looks like a one-time round of layoffs, but an overall reorganization affecting other divisions is planned for later this year and that could include more cuts.

They’re coming as a result of an internal review ordered late last year by CEO Bob Iger and CFO Jay Rasulo to pinpoint superfluous positions and increase efficiency.

But the company is already doing well with mega-blockbusters including The AvengersNet profits for the fiscal year that ended in September increased 18% to $5.7 billion on revenues of $42.3 billion.

Related: Disney Fiscal Q1 Earnings & Revenues Beat Expectations

The projected staff cuts this week are not the first to hit the larger Disney empire of late. LucasArts, the video game division of the recently acquired Lucasfilmsshuttered its production on April 3 and laid off around 150 employees.

There were also layoffs in Lucasfilms’ animation department after Disney announced in March that it was discontinuing production of the long-running Star Wars: The Clone Wars for Cartoon Network and pursing “ a new direction in animated programming.”

In September, more than 100 Disney Interactive employees lost their jobs in what was called a reorganization within the online unit.

Roger Ebert's Final Movie Review

to the wonder

Roger Ebert passed away Thursday at age 70 after a long battle with cancer.

Sunday, The Chicago Sun Times published his final film review to his web site.

Jim Emerson, who edits Ebert's site, tweeted the review of Terrence Malick's "To the Wonder" from Ebert's account.

"To the Wonder" stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams, and Javier Bardem and follows the relationships of Affleck's character, Neil, in both America and abroad in Europe.

Ebert gave the film three out of four stars, saying the film could just as easily have been silent.

Overall, the movie received mixed reviews.

"To the Wonder" will open in limited release April 12.

Here's an excerpt from his review

A more conventional film would have assigned a plot to these characters and made their motivations more clear. Malick, who is surely one of the most romantic and spiritual of filmmakers, appears almost naked here before his audience, a man not able to conceal the depth of his vision.

"Well," I asked myself, "why not?" Why must a film explain everything? Why must every motivation be spelled out? Aren't many films fundamentally the same film, with only the specifics changed? Aren't many of them telling the same story? Seeking perfection, we see what our dreams and hopes might look like. We realize they come as a gift through no power of our own, and if we lose them, isn't that almost worse than never having had them in the first place?

There will be many who find "To the Wonder" elusive and too effervescent. They'll be dissatisfied by a film that would rather evoke than supply. I understand that, and I think Terrence Malick does, too. But here he has attempted to reach more deeply than that: to reach beneath the surface, and find the soul in need.

Last year, Ebert added Malick's "The Tree of Life" to his list of greatest movies of all time

casey kasem house

Radio personality Casey Kasem — former host of the American Top 40 for almost four decades — has listed his Holmby Hills mansion for $42 million, according to the Redfin Blog.

The 1954 estate is 12,000 square feet and includes seven bedrooms, a library, and 11.5 bathrooms decorated with antiques and European-style art.

The property itself is also a massive 2.5 acres with a tennis court and heart-shaped pool.
