FOX NEWS EXEC: People Don't Watch Cable News To Get The Actual News

the fiveBrian Stelter has a long piece up at the New York Times about the success of Fox News' 5pm show 'The Five.'

Initially envisioned a temporary summer replacement for the recently departed Glenn Beck, 'The Five' has been clocking strong ratings since it premiere and is now a permanent fixture in the line-up.

More interesting than the success of the 'The Five' however, or even what it reveals about people who watch cable news, is Fox's acknowledgment that people no longer come to cable news for actual news.

Or any news.

“People know what the news is,” said Mr. Domal, [the vice president for eastern ad sales at Fox News]. “You’re not coming to cable news for news anymore. You’re coming for either validation of your opinion or you’re looking to find out what the other side is saying.”

It is, he said, analogous to the debates that break out on peoples’ Facebook walls.

“It’s almost like we’re social media, live,” he said. “They’re just talking to each other. They’re just posting.”
