Summer

Summer movies have always represented a good opportunity for the movie studios. Many of them chose to release their big "blockbusters" to capture those movie goers trying to escape the summer heat.

2015 saw recording breaking movies like "Jurassic World" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" released in the summer. None from 2016 have beat the records of last year yet, but summer is still only just beginning.

Most of the major studios have already begun releasing their slate of summer hopefuls, which means the winners and losers of the summer are already starting to emerge.

Read below to find out which studios have brought in the most at the box office this year...

All box office numbers below are provided by Box Office Mojo

#6 Sony (Ticker: SNE)

The biggest movie for Sony Picture Studios this summer has been "The Angry Birds Movie." The film hasn't quite hit the $100 million mark yet, but is on track to do so with $98.2 million in domestic grosses since its release.

The other summer movie from Sony, "Money Monster", received a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes and has brought in $39 million domestically. This puts the movie towards the bottom of the summer box office.

Sony shares have risen 6.8% in 2016.

#5 Paramount (Ticker: VIA)

The heroes in a half shell are back this summer in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows."

The movie opened June 3, and has not fared as well as its predecessor "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" which was released in 2014. The sequel has brought in $61 million domestically in its first two weeks.

The other movies for Paramount's summer haven't been huge hits. "10 Cloverfield Lane" is the best performing movie that has been released from the studio this year, and has brought in $72 million so far.

Still coming for the studio this summer, "Star Trek Beyond."

Viacom, Paramount's parent company, is up 13.7% this year.

#4 Universal (Ticker: CMCSA)

Over-the-top comedy is the strategy for Universal this summer.

"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" and "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping", are the two summer movies from Universal that have already been released. The movies have brought in $53.1 million and $8.3 million respectively.

Looking at all of 2016 bolsters the studio's lineup with several other comedy titles. "Ride Along 2", "The Boss" and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" all were released earlier this year.

So far, none of the titles have been a break out hit, but "The Secret Life of Pets" and the new "Jason Bourne" are set to release later this summer.

Universal is owned by Comcast, which is up 12.9% this year.

A new documentary reveals one reason why the gloves didn't fit O.J. Simpson

Warning: This post contains spoilers for part four of the docuseries "O.J.: Made in America."

It turns out that there are still untold stories from the "trial of the 20th century."

The murder trial of O.J. Simpson was watched by tens of millions of people in 1995 and analyzed endlessly by the media, and just about every person involved, including Simpson, has written a book about it. Yet the new ESPN documentary "O.J.: Made in America" has revealed a key piece of information that even those who were intimately tied to the case didn't know about until seeing it.

In part four of the documentary — airing on ESPN on Friday — Simpson's former sports agent, Mike Gilbert, says in an interview that there was another reason why Simpson could not get the infamous bloody gloves fully on in court when prosecuting attorney Christopher Darden asked him to wear them.

Simpson, according to Gilbert, had stopped taking his arthritis medicine two weeks before, so his hands were swollen.

"That story was certainly new to me," Jeffrey Toobin, who's featured in the documentary and is the author of "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson," told Business Insider. "I never knew that and, as far as I'm aware, the story had never been out there before."

The prosecution in the case previously argued that the gloves didn't fit because they shrank from the blood on them and because Simpson was also wearing rubber gloves underneath the evidence gloves.

Gil Garcetti, who served as the Los Angeles district attorney at the time of the Simpson trial and is also featured in the documentary, told ABC's "Good Morning America" that he also wasn't aware of Simpson's arthritis medicine until "I saw it on this film."

Garcetti's reaction was simply: "My God."

When asked if he thought that the defense team for Simpson potentially crossed a line if it was indeed behind his not taking the medicine, Garcetti said, "No ... I can't really say it's crossing the line. They did everything in their power. We were baited into perhaps even having him trying on the gloves in the first place. It was never supposed to happen."

Part two of "O.J.: Made in America" airs on ESPN on June 17.

Here's the coolest stuff that was just announced from Xbox

Thinking about buying a new Xbox One? Maybe hold off for a minute.

Microsoft just announced two new versions of the Xbox One at the biggest gaming show of the year, E3 2016. Here's a rundown of all the major announcements:

Two new Xbox consoles

xbox one s

It's been rumored for a while that Microsoft would reveal two new versions of Xbox One. On Monday, it finally happened. Here's what we know about the more powerful one, codenamed "Project Scorpio":

  • It's a significantly more powerful version of the Xbox One.
  • It's scheduled to launch in the holiday season of 2017.
  • It will support "high-end" VR headsets, like the Oculus Rift.

And here's what we know about the slimmer, white version of the Xbox One, which is called the Xbox One S:

  • The Xbox One S is 40% smaller than the current Xbox One.
  • It has 2TB of internal storage
  • It comes with a newer, slightly nicer version of the Xbox One gamepad.
  • It's scheduled to launch in holiday 2016 for $299 (presumably as a direct replacement for the model currently on store shelves).

Most importantly, all past, present, and future Xbox One games will be playable on all three consoles: the original Xbox One, the Xbox One S, and Project Scorpio. You won't be able to play VR games on the less powerful models, but there won't be any games exclusive to Project Scorpio.

New online features

looking for group xbox live

Microsoft continues to make improvements to its Xbox Live online gaming service. Here's what was revealed at E3, all of which arrives by some time in fall 2016:

  • Players can create private clubs centered around games, lifestyles, or pretty much whatever they want.
  • A new "looking for group" feature will allow players to seek out skilled players for their multiplayer games. No more wrangling friends for "Destiny" raids!
  • Arena on Xbox Live is Microsoft's entry into the world of eSports. The feature will allow players to enter tournaments and win prizes.
  • Finally, some multiplayer games like "Gears of War 4" and "Forza Horizon 3" will allow cross-play between Xbox One and Windows 10, meaning you can play those games with your PC-owning friends if you prefer console.

It's all about the games

recore

Of course, there were tons of games on display, seeing as it was a video game showcase. Here are some of the biggest ones you can play only on Xbox One and Windows 10:

  • "ReCore" is a new, original game from "Mega Man" creator Keiji Inafune and some of the people who made "Metroid Prime." You play as a girl named Joule, who has a gun, some sweet jet boots, and the ability to place cores inside different robots to make them do her bidding. Robot dog!
  • "Gears of War 4" has you hiding behind cover and shooting creepy monsters in gorgeous-looking environments with some pretty gruesome-looking weapons.
  • "Dead Rising 4" sees the return of Frank West, the original protagonist of "Dead Rising." He is once again tasked with taking out hordes of zombies with some of the goofiest weapons we've ever seen, including giant hammers and electrified lawnmowers.
  • "Forza Horizon 3" enables you to cruise the Australian countryside in a variety of high-powered, expensive cars. It is unbelievably beautiful, and the act of simply driving around the world looks enormously fun.
  • "Sea of Thieves" is a new, online multiplayer pirate simulator where you and a crew of friends can swash and buckle across the high seas. Get in ship battles with other crews, explore islands and, most importantly, celebrate your victories with cooperative drinking!

And the rest

xbox design lab

Here are some of the other miscellaneous updates Microsoft gave about the future of Xbox:

  • The Xbox Design Lab enables you to customize and order your very own special Xbox One controller. Check out that pink controller! Look at it! It's great!
  • Xbox Play Anywhere is a simple solution to buying games. Buy a game on Xbox One, play it on both Xbox One and PC with shared save data between the two. Smart!
  • Cortana, the digital assistant that acts as Microsoft's answer to Siri, is coming to Xbox One. You'll be able to use voice commands to operate your console in the same way you currently can on Windows 10 PCs.

And that's all the biggest news that came out of Microsoft's E3 show this year! If you don't already have an Xbox One, you should probably (definitely) wait until late 2017 to get the more powerful version of it. By then, all of these rad looking games will be cheaper. Everybody wins!

Celebrities have taken to social media to voice their anguish and mourning in the aftermath of the Orlando nightclub shooting on Sunday morning — an attack that claimed 49 lives and left another 53 people injured, making it the deadliest such incident in US history

Stars and notable voices from the LGBT community paid tribute to the victims of the shooting, which occurred at the gay nightclub Pulse, and many used their various media platforms to call for gun-control reform.

Ellen DeGeneres, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Lady Gaga were among the many who expressed their condolences to the victims and their grief over the deadly attack:

Many celebrities also addressed the tragedy on television and in video responses. John Oliver, host of "Last Week Tonight," called the attacker a "dips--t terrorist" in a cold open on his Sunday night show. Oliver also highlighted and commended the outpouring of support from Floridians, who "raced to give blood in a show of solidarity with the victims."

The Tony Awards, which took place on Sunday night, dedicated the show to the victims of Orlando. The show's host, James Corden, discussed the attack in his opening monologue.

It's no secret that Netflix believes that ramping up the production of original shows and movies is the key to its success, especially internationally. And they aren't cheap to produce.

Netflix has said it will spend $5 billion on content this year, and release a whopping 31 scripted shows. That's instantly recognizable as a huge chunk of money, but sometimes it's also worthwhile to have a reminder of just how much more Netflix spends than its competitors.

A recent analyst note from Morgan Stanley put things into perspective. Here is how much Netflix spends on content compared to its rivals (according to Morgan Stanley):

It looks like people are already in love with Apple Music's redesign

Screen Shot 2016 06 13 at 2.11.55 PM

Apple Music's overhaul was finally unveiled at WWDC on Monday, and the general consensus is that the update is much-needed and overdue.

The music streaming service is only a year old, and, as announced on Monday, now has 15 million users. It's still behind Spotify, which counts 30 million paid users as of March 2016.

But the platform, once touted as a Spotify killer, had been plagued by complaints since its debut. Many users found the interface confusing. Some had problems differentiating between their own music and songs available for streaming. And the "Connect" tab, designed to allow users connect with artists, was widely criticized and deemed useless.

Screen Shot 2016 06 13 at 2.10.48 PM

The redesign includes a "downloaded music" section that will hold all music owned by users, the "Connect" tab has been hidden under a "For You" discovery tab, and the design seems easier to navigate overall.

Reactions across social media seem pretty positive. But many users say this functionality should have been in the original version of Apple Music.

But of course, not everyone is happy with the new design. A lot of users are unhappy with the large, bold font.

That said, the real star of the Apple Music presentation wasn't the redesign. Rather, it was Bozoma Saint John, the head of Apple's consumer marketing, who presented the demo.

Saint John is the first woman of color to take the stage at an Apple keynote. She made quite an impact, encouraging the room full of developers to rap along to the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" and showing off her dance moves.

While Saint John had her moment in the spotlight, Jimmy Iovine, the head of Apple Music, was nowhere to be found.

We look forward to trying the new version of Apple Music as soon as it becomes available. iOS 10 is currently available for developers, and there will be an open beta of the software in July.

A condom brand has signed up Charlie Sheen as its spokesman

Lelo, a London-based sex-toy company, has signed up actor Charlie Sheen as the brand ambassador for its new condom product, Lelo Hex.

Sheen, who revealed in a TV interview last year that he was HIV-positive, stars in a video for the condom.

In it, the "Two and a Half Men" star talks about an issue some people have with using condoms.

"I think people associate the word 'condom' with less pleasure, with less connection," he says. "What may feel like five seconds of inconvenience, or a halted, or thwarted moment can absolutely prevent a lifetime of potential grief and suffering."

He continues that a lot of people hold the "fantasy belief" that they will never contract a sexually transmitted disease or infection.

"I pretty much felt the same way: That's stuff for other people," Sheen says.

charlie sheenSheen goes on to talk about the reaction people had to the news that he had HIV: Web searches went up, and he says his confession opened up a dialog about the virus. Lelo says on its website that it happened at a time when there had been a "steady decline in interest" in conversations about condom use since 2006.

"That was powerful, and when that happened I was proud to have turned something that seemed so completely negative and life-disruptive into change and healing," Sheen says. "Just to put words on it is empowering and is a sense of relief."

Sheen said in an interview last year that he publicly acknowledged that he had HIV in an attempt to stop people from blackmailing him into paying them to keep their silence about his disease. He revealed that he had paid out "enough to take it into the millions."

In the Lelo video, which was produced by the creative agency Alpha Century, Sheen suggests that discovering he had the disease has led to him cut back on his rock-and-roll lifestyle.

In an interview with "Extra's" AJ Calloway, Sheen said he was feeling healthier: "Exercise, diet … don't go on benders anymore, don't drink as much ... It was the combination of a lot of the self-loathing a lot of the shame behind it that I just wanted to keep myself divorced from reality … I just woke up one day and said, 'I deserve better.'"

Sheen also says he has tried the condom, though he is not currently dating.

The Lelo Hex differs from normal condoms because it has a hexagonal web of panels threaded throughout the latex. The company says this type of structural design allows the condom to be thin but strong like graphene.

The Lelo Hex isn't yet available. Lelo is crowdfunding the project and is aiming to attract 10,000 to get the launch off the ground — pledging anything from £9 ($12.75) for a 12-pack to a £799 package that includes a Lelo gift bag and the chance to meet the company's founder at the company's headquarters.

The project had 594 backers at the time of writing.

Rapper Lil Wayne, 33, was hospitalized Monday after suffering two seizures, forcing his California-bound flight to make two emergency landings in Omaha, Nebraska.

The rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, was traveling from Milwaukee to California when he suffered his first seizure. TMZ reported that Carter lost consciousness mid-flight and subsequently refused treatment when paramedics arrived at his plane around 3 p.m. local time.

According to local station KETV, the plane then took off but soon circled back to the Omaha airport after Carter suffered his second seizure. The rapper was then taken to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center, where he reportedly spent the night in the emergency room.

A representative for the rapper has confirmed to The Fader that Carter is now "in stable condition and good spirits," following the hospital stay.

In 2012, Carter suffered a string of seizures, one of which similarly forced his private jet to make an emergency landing in Texas. In March 2013, after several seizures, he was hospitalized and placed in a medically induced comaLater that month, the rapper revealed that he suffers from epilepsy, which he said causes "recurring seizures."

Conan O'Brien rails against assault rifles after Orlando shooting: 'These are weapons of war'

Conan O'Brian Orland Shooting TBS final

Conan O'Brien was just one of the late-night hosts to take time out from his funny show to get serious and address the horrific mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando late Saturday night, which left at least 49 people dead and is now considered the deadliest shooting in US history.

"At a time when we have heard the worst stories about senseless violence in our country, that it couldn't possibly get worse, the news out of Orlando yesterday is still impossible to fathom," O'Brien said in front of his audience at the start of his show.

And O'Brien allowed the audience a glimpse inside his own political opinions about the issue, something he rarely does on the show. The host took a stand against the selling of automatic rifles to civilians:

"I have really tried very hard over the years not to bore you with what I think. However I am a father of two, I like to believe I have a shred of common sense, and I simply do not understand why anybody in this country is allowed to purchase and own a semi-automatic assault rifle. It makes no sense to me. These are weapons of war and they have no place in civilian life.

"I have tried to understand this issue from every side and it all comes down to this: Nobody I know or have ever met in my entire life should have access to a weapon that can kill so many people so quickly. These mass shootings are happening so often now that lamenting them afterward is becoming a national ritual."

The shooter in Orlando had numerous weapons when he committed the act, including an AR-15 assault rifle.

O'Brien ended his remarks by saying, "It's time to grow up and figure this out."

Samantha Bee dropped everything and unleashed her anger over the Orlando attack

samantha bee orlando shootings full frontal tbs

Samantha Bee was incensed after this weekend's Orlando shooting.

The "Full Frontal" host used her show to unleash her anger over America's failure with gun legislation, the availability of the AR-15 rifle to civilians, and Florida governor Rick Scott's response to the shooting in his state.

Bee ditched the opening segment and the theme song to get right into the business at hand.

"After a massacre, the standard operating procedure is that you stand onstage and deliver some well-meaning words about how we'll get through this together, how love conquers hate. And that is great, that is beautiful, but you know what? F--- it, I am too angry for that. Love does not win, unless we start loving each other enough to fix our problems," Bee said.

First she zeroed in on Omar Mateen, the man who entered Orlando's Pulse nightclub and killed 49 people and injured 53 others, and the ease of his purchasing guns last week. After the attack, we learned he had been investigated and interviewed for possible terrorist connections, had a record of homophobic behavior, and was violent with his wife.

"None of these things disqualified him from buying a gun that shoots 45 rounds a minute," Bee said, "not even his terrible mirror selfies. I think we can all agree if you don't have one friend to hold the phone for you, your lone-wolf a-- doesn't get a gun."

Bee was also maddened by the response from politicians after the horrible attack. For example, Governor Scott dodged a question about improved gun laws by saying, "There will be plenty of time to think about how we continue to improve society."

To which Bee railed, "What the f--- are you even talking about? This wasn't even Orlando's first high-profile gun murder of the weekend. Stop thinking and do something to improve our society."

Apple Music has just reversed a troubling trend (AAPL)

wwdc

On Monday, Apple announced a big redesign of its year-old Apple Music app. The update seems like a response to critics, many of whom have described Apple Music as being needlessly confusing and difficult to use.

Early responses on Twitter to the changes have been positive, but that's not the only good news for Apple. The company also announced that Apple Music had 15 million paying subscribers. This number is well behind Spotify's 30 million (as of March), but it is significant for one big reason: It reverses a recent downward trend in the pace of user growth.

Analyst Jan Dawson pointed this out on Twitter:

The chart in Dawson's tweet shows that since Apple Music's initial launch, the number of subscribers joining the service each day had been trending down.

That seems to have changed since April. And if the public's reaction to Apple Music's redesign is as positive as the initial buzz, that upward trend could continue.

Here is a rundown of the changes coming to Apple Music, put together by Tech Insider's Samantha Cooney:

  • The app's redesign has big, bold, black text, white backgrounds, and larger album art.
  • The music library is redesigned for easier navigation.
  • A "recently added" section will show new music.
  • A new section called "Downloaded music" will hold all music purchased by users.
  • Lyrics will show up while songs are playing.
  • The "new" tab will be dropped and replaced with a "Browse" tab designed to make it easier to find new music.
  • The "For You" tab has a discovery mix to help you find new music, daily curated playlists tailored to you, and recently played songs.
  • The widely panned "Connect" functionality has been added under "For You."
  • New 3D Touch functionality will make it easier to preview tracks and share music on social media.

Trevor Noah confronts Orlando shooting: 'We shouldn't allow this to be normal'

Trevor Noah, host of "The Daily Show," took on the Orlando mass shooting and the issue of gun control on his Monday night show, joining the list of late-night hosts who have spoken out against semiautomatic rifles in the aftermath of the attack.

"The saddest part is every time this happens, it feels like America has already decided," Noah said. "This is exactly the kind of country it wants to be. Because we know how this always plays out: We’re shocked, we mourn, we change our profile pics, and we move on. It’s become normal.

"I’m sorry. Maybe it’s because I’m new," Noah continued, referencing his outsider perspective on US gun policies as a South African comic. "But it’s not normal. And it shouldn’t be normal. We shouldn’t allow this to be normal.”

The extended opening segment featured a clip of President Obama's press conference following the horrific attack, which Noah noted was the deadliest in a long string of mass shootings that have taken place during the Obama presidency.

"I wonder if President Obama ever thought to himself that mass shooting speeches would be such a big part of his job," Noah said. "You know, at this point, he’s hosted 12 state dinners, but has had to make 16 mass shooting addresses."

The segment also featured unsettling footage from 2011 of an Al-Qaeda spokesman describing how terrorists in America have ample and easy access to heavy artillery, which Noah parlayed to make an argument for gun-control reform in relation to the Orlando attack.

"There’s elements of terrorism, homophobia, mental health," Noah said. "But it is glaringly obvious: America needs to make it a lot harder for people who shouldn’t have guns to get guns. To many of us, it seems crystal clear."

Here's how J.K. Simmons got ripped, according to his trainer

$

JK Simmons final

By now, you have probably seen the Instagram photos of a bearded J.K. Simmons in the weight room flexing a pair of big and powerful guns.

The photos were posted by his trainer, Aaron Williamson, a Marine veteran who has become a trainer to the stars. He has been working with the 61-year-old Simmons off and on since they met on the set of "Terminator Genisys." Business Insider reached Williamson by phone this week to get the scoop on how Simmons has accomplished his dramatic body transformation.

Simmons has been training his body for a while, Williamson told Business Insider.

"When we first trained on 'Terminator' he just wanted to stay healthy, and it progressed after people saw him transform for 'Whiplash,'" he said. Simmons worked with another trainer, Dana Perri, for his role in "Whiplash," but since January, Simmons has begun training again with Williamson as well, usually two to three times a week.

After "Whiplash," Williamson said, Simmons "wanted to do more of a physique transformation."

"He wants to have some 'beefing' guns to show people that he is just not that guy that does Farmers commercials," Williamson said.

So what's the secret to getting this impressive new physique?

"Each session is different — I don't pre-plan any workout before he gets there," Williamson said. "We never go in and do the exact same workout. It is always different." He added, however, that each session followed a relatively similar pattern.

"Usually [Simmons] always rides his bike to gym, so he is getting cardio before he gets there, and then once we meet up we do about 15 minutes more of cardio, then jump into some warm-up sets of whatever body part we are working on just to get some blood in the muscle," the trainer said. Then they jump into working sets — though these are more like supersets.

"I'm big on hitting the muscle from as many different angles as you can with as much blood volume as you can," Williamson said. All these different angles confuse the muscles, creating definition. "We use different exercises back to back to back … [and] by the end of the set, we are essentially doing 30 to 40 reps."

Simmons can do high numbers of reps by using lower weights, Williamson said, though the low weight can still yield results.

For example, Simmons does a lot of dumbbell work, which allows him to change his hand placement throughout the workout, keeping ligaments and tendons safe while working the muscles in his arms in a variety of different ways.

He also does cable work to build up his chest, plank work to strengthen the core, and crunches and leg raises to work the lower body.

There has been a lot of speculation that Simmons is working to transform his body for his role as Commissioner Gordon in the "Justice League" film, but if he is, he hasn't told his trainer.

"If he is, I have no idea about it," the trainer said. "Honestly, when I posted those photos up on my instagram, we never could have imagined this was going to happen and people would assume it was just for this role. But like I said, if he is, he has been pretty hush-hush about anything he is doing. This has just been a personal goal of his to transform his body into something different."

REVIEW: 'Finding Dory' lacks the magic of the original, but it's still a lot of fun

finding dory disney pixar final

Warning: mild spoilers for "Finding Dory" below.

It's been 13 years since Pixar introduced us to Marlin, his son Nemo, and their absent-minded friend Dory in "Finding Nemo," an animated hit that felt like it took over the world when it came out. And finally director Andrew Stanton (also of "Wall-E") has given us a sequel.

"Finding Dory" takes us back to the bottom of the ocean a year after Marlin (Albert Brooks) went on his adventure to find Nemo and gained a friend in Dory (Ellen DeGeneres). But this time the focus shifts to Dory, who even though she suffers from memory loss has flashes of the past, which have made her realize she has parents and lost them years ago.

Pixar, like the Disney of the old days, is never shy to pull the heartstrings, and this movie is no different. Flashbacks of an adorably wide-eyed baby Dory with her parents (Eugene Levy and Diane Keaton) struggling to hold onto her memories, and eventually alone in the open water with no clue of her parents' whereabouts, are heartbreaking.

But these memories serve a purpose: motivating Dory to seek out her parents. With the area where she once lived fresh in her mind, she, along with Marlin and Nemo, sets out to find her family.

The movie is slow out of the starting gate, but finally takes off after the trio arrives at the Marine Life Institute in California and begins to interact with the sea life there. The appearance of ill-tempered octopus Hank (Ed O'Neill) is a triumph of not just CGI animation, but a well-written character who is the polar opposite of the babbling Dory.

finding doryAs Dory is split from Marlin and Nemo, we move back and forth from Dory's search for her parents and the clownfish searching for Dory. Funny predicaments occur to both until finally they meet back toward the end, just in time for a satisfying finale.

"Finding Dory" certainly doesn't break any new ground in terms of story or subjects tackled. And it certainly doesn't have the magic of "Finding Nemo," which hit a home run with every plot point and character.

There's still a lot to enjoy about "Finding Dory" — the near-sighted whale shark Destiny (Kaitlin Olson) and beluga whale Bailey (Ty Burrell) are hysterically fun, and the recurring joke of a celebrity as the voice of the institute never gets old — but the overcoming of all odds and fears that made us love "Nemo" doesn't have the same punch in "Dory."

Still, it's great to see the gang back together.

"Finding Dory" opens on Friday in theaters.

HOLLYWOOD LOVES GUNS: Here's the staggering number of recent movie posters featuring guns

Liam Neeson

Mass shootings haven't curbed Hollywood's habit of putting guns front and center in its movies.

Since a gunman went on a rampage at the Virginia Tech campus in 2007, The New York Times reports that there have been 25 other mass shootings in the country, including the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando on Sunday.

Even with the tragedies and public outcries for gun control, Hollywood continues to plaster images of guns on its advertisements.

It seems like Liam Neeson can't be in a movie poster without one — even "A Million Ways to Die in the West" followed the lead of his "Taken" films.

Action stars like Neeson, Matt Damon, and Mark Wahlberg aren't the only ones holding guns. Weapons are also routinely used in comedies' posters. (See: Kevin Hart in "Ride Along 2" or his upcoming film "Central Intelligence" with The Rock, or Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in "21 Jump Street" and its sequel "22 Jump Street.")

"Jason Bourne," "Cell," and "War Dogs" are all due out this summer and prominently feature guns in their posters.

The amount of film posters featuring guns is startling, and that's not even accounting for the ones that display science-fiction weapons and blasters that resemble guns. Of movie posters from the top 100 domestic grossing movies in 2015 alone, 18 featured guns, or just under a fifth of posters.

Scroll through our slideshow below for 56 posters prominently featuring guns for some of the top grossing movies that have been released since the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

Why Netflix thinks its personalized recommendation engine is worth $1 billion per year (NFLX)

Special_Correspondents_press_1 NetflixAfter a long refinement process, Netflix finally released its first “global” recommendation engine in December.

The engine takes dozens of algorithms into account and compares you with similar users in the more than 190 countries where Netflix's service is available.

"If one member in this tiny island expresses an interest for anime, then we're able to map that person to the global anime community," Carlos Gomez-Uribe, VP of product innovation at Netflix, told Tech Insider in February.

And Netflix thinks it’s worth a lot of money: $1 billion per year, in fact. In an academic paper penned by Gomez-Uribe and Netflix’s Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt, they assert that “the combined effect of personalization and recommendations save us more than $1B per year."

That’s a significant chunk of change considering Netflix will spend $5 billion this year on global content.

90 seconds or bust

Why does Netflix think its recommendation engine is worth so much? The short answer is because it helps it keep subscribers from canceling. “Consumer research suggests that a typical Netflix member loses interest after perhaps 60 to 90 seconds of choosing, having reviewed 10 to 20 titles (perhaps 3 in detail) on one or two screens,” they write. “The user either finds something of interest or the risk of the user abandoning our service increases substantially.”

If Netflix only has 90 seconds to grab a subscriber’s attention, it needs to find a good show or movie fast. If people were just typing in what they wanted to see into the search bar, this would be relatively easy. But Netflix estimates that only 20% of its subscriber video choices come from search, with the other 80% coming from recommendations. So it’s essential that Netflix gets this right.

The end goal of the engine is “moments of truth,” when “a member starts a session and we help that member find something engaging within a few seconds, preventing abandonment of our service for an alternative entertainment option.”

In other words, Netflix believes it could lose $1 billion or more every year from subscribers quitting its service if it weren't for its personalized recommendation engine.

And that’s why Netflix thinks that its recommendation engine, however much it could be improved in the future, is already worth so much money to the company.

5 things you didn't know about the crazy twist ending of '10 Cloverfield Lane'

10 Cloverfield Lane paramount

One of the surprise hits of 2016 has been "10 Cloverfield Lane," the "spiritual sequel" to the 2008 found-footage movie "Cloverfield," which followed a group of New Yorkers during an alien attack.

In "Lane," producer J.J. Abrams (also behind the original) and director Daniel Trachtenberg create a story that has the feel of a thrilling sci-fi movie, but for different reasons than "Cloverfield."

In this story, we follow Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) after she has been in a car accident. She's now in an underground bunker being taken care of by Howard (John Goodman), who informs her that an attack has happened on the planet and that the air outside is no longer breathable.

This leads to a trippy series of mind games and thrills that suggest, as the movie's tagline says, "Monsters come in many forms."

For the movie's Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD release on Tuesday, Business Insider talked to Trachtenberg about the evolution of its thrilling ending.

Warning: spoilers for the ending of "10 Cloverfield Lane" below.

SEE ALSO: Netflix says there are 3 kinds of binge-watchers — find out which one you are

1. The ending was originally less hopeful.

Before Trachtenberg came on to direct the movie, the spec script was titled “The Cellar” and concluded with Michelle escaping the bunker, realizing the air is fine, and traveling to Chicago. There it's revealed that the city is in rubble.

“I never read the spec script but from what I’ve been told, it’s like the city is on fire or something,” Trachtenberg said. “But the first script I read, there was an alien attack and she still had to do more to survive.”

2. At one time, the ending was set in the daytime and there were more aliens Michelle had to fight.

When J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company bought the script and attached Trachtenberg to direct, they began making tweaks to “The Cellar” script. For a while, the ending was set during the day, and there were a few other differences from what we see in the final cut.

“Actually a couple of creatures [attack Michelle], not just one. She sees a creature in the distance as opposed to seeing a ship, little changes like that.”

The scene was changed to night to build up the scares, but taking out the second alien wasn’t from the brain trust of Abrams, Trachtenberg, and their team...

3. Here's how the film's one test screening changed the ending.

Michelle's confrontation with two aliens was shown to the only test-screening audience for the film. The biggest takeaway was that people could only take so much.

“The ending we shot was longer,” Trachtenberg said. “It had an extra creature attack in it and the test audience said it was too much. They were exhausted. So that was the main impact that the test audience had on it.”
