Jodie Kidd

The BBC has reportedly selected its "dream team" for the next season of its hit car show, "Top Gear."

According to the Telegraph's James Rothwell, the trio will consist of model Jodie Kidd, actor Philip Glenister, and television host Guy Martin.

Kidd, 36, is a a noted fashion model and TV personality who currently hosts "The Classic Car Show" on the UK's Channel 5. Kidd is a well-known car enthusiast and has appeared on "Top Gear" twice as guest.

Glenister, 52, has had leading roles on the British TV shows "Life on Mars" and "Ashes to Ashes." The actor currently hosts "For the Love of Cars" on Channel 4 in the UK.

Martin, 33, is a successful TV host and motorcycle racer. He's made nearly a dozen appearances at the prestigious Tourist Trophy motorcycle race on the Isle of Man.

The new hosts will take over for Jeremy Clarkson –  removed from the show after nearly 30 years at the helm due to a fracas with a producer – as well as Richard Hammond and James May, both of whom chose not to renew their contracts.

Longtime executive producer Andy Wilman has also left the show.

The BBC has not set a formal date for season 23 of "Top Gear."

A huge sports day prevented ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ from breaking box-office records

Although $191.3 million now makes “Avengers: Age of Ultron” the second-largest box-office opening weekend for a film ever, the latest Marvel blockbuster could potentially have made more if it didn’t run into an epic day of sporting events this weekend.

“Ultron” was projected to make close to $220 million this weekend, surpassing the all-time weekend opening gross currently held by 2012’s "The Avengers" ($207.4 million). However, Saturday had one of the biggest sports days in recent memory outside of the Super Bowl. There were the playoff games in professional basketball and hockey, the Kentucky Derby, and, finally, the touted “fight of the century” between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“It was one of the greatest sports days perhaps in history,” Dave Hollis, distribution chief at Disney, told Variety. “It feels like a barrage of sporting options grabbed a lot of people’s attention.”

Floyd Mayweather and Manny PacquiaoBefore Pacquiao and Mayweather squared off in Las Vegas Saturday evening, there was a lot for sports fans to enjoy before then. Many donned their fancy hats and hit parties to watch American Pharoah win the Kentucky Derby; the latest edition of the rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox took place; the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals squared off in the NHL Playoffs; and in a dramatic Game 7 that was decided by a buzzer beater, the Los Angeles Clippers edged the San Antonio Spurs to advance in the NBA playoffs.

It was certainly evident at the box office as “Ultron” ticket sales dropped 32% on Saturday following it’s $84.4 million take on Friday. (Sunday’s numbers slipped 20% from Saturday.)

In comparison, ticket sales for 2012's "The Avengers" took a 13.9% dip from Friday to Saturday when it opened in 2012.

Looking at the two opening weekends side-by-side is incredible since "Ultron" made more money than its predecessor in Friday ticket sales.

MovieFriday opening weekend gross (ticket sales)Saturday grossSunday gross
"The Avengers" (2012)$80.8 million$69.6 million$57.1 million
"Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015)$84 million (estimate)$57.2 million$46 million

Kentucky Derby American PharoahBy Sunday night, networks running some of the sporting events boasted their big days.

NBC’s coverage of the Kentucky Derby delivered the highest ratings in 23 years. And HBO/Showtime reported an estimated $400 million take in pay-per-view revenue from the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight, which ended with Mayweather winning in a unanimous decision.

The "Avengers" sequel isn't hurting though. The movie is already well on its way to becoming the second $1 billion film of the year. So far, the sequel has made over $626 million worldwide.

"Ultron" is expected to have another big weekend coming up with the only competition being the comedy "Hot Pursuit," starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara.

'Revenge' got a big ratings boost after being canceled

revenge abc ratings cancelation

"Revenge" fans gave the drama a big ratings boost  days after ABC announced that the show would end after the current season.

In fact, the series attracted its biggest total audience in two months with 4.9 million viewers tuning in, a 9% increase over last week's 4.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen's preliminary numbers. The episode also nabbed its biggest young adult audience since Dec. 7 of last year.

But the big ratings news is the show's 20% increase with adult viewers between the ages of 18-49  the group advertisers really desire. "Revenge" earned a 1.2 rating/4 share versus last week's 1.0/3. It also beat CBS's "Battle Creek" (0.7/2) and NBC's "American Odyssey" (0.5/2) ratings, its broadcast network competition in the 10 p.m hour.

A number of things could've given "Revenge" the boost. First, curiosity. Lapsed and new viewers may have heard of the cancelation and decided to tune in to find out what's happening on the show and if they felt it deserved to be done-zo.

abc revenge victoria grayson dead ratings(Warning: Spoiler alert ahead)

Second, the recent major character death. Fans may have been hooked by the demise of the show's Queen Bee Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) and the fallout for Emily (Emily VanCamp), who was framed by Victoria for her murder.

And third, a strong lead-in show. "Revenge" could've been helped by the finale of "Secrets & Lies," which aired at 9 p.m. and scored a series-high audience of 6.4 million viewers (a 10% increase over last week's episode) and a steady 1.7/5 rating in that advertiser-coveted Adults 18-49 demographic. Many of those people can stick around and help drive ratings for the next show up.

Regardless, these ratings could mean that "Revenge" may end its four season run next week with a pretty good ratings sendoff.

Last Wednesday, just hours after BI named "Revenge" on its list of 15 shows that will most likely be canceled, ABC announced that the drama would end after its current fourth season.

During its first season, “Revenge” helped to rejuvenate ABC after a string of failed dramas. But, its following three seasons have been plagued with declining ratingscreative problems, mini story reboots, and a drop in social buzz. Yet, it still holds a sweet space in ABC’s rebound in the drama category, which now includes solid shows like "Scandal," "How to Get Away With Murder" and "Once Upon a Time."

Sales for this Bruce Lee DJing shirt in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' are through the roof

It looks like Marvel isn’t the only company that had a good weekend.

Following the $191.3 million weekend for “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” making it the second largest domestic opening weekend of all-time, the company behind a T-shirt featured in the film also had a big weekend.

Peter Lee’s Los Angeles-based company, Bow and Arrow, Inc., is responsible for the Bruce Lee DJing T-shirt Robert Downey Jr. wears in the movie.

It turns out Downey Jr. is a huge fan of the shirt, having worn it to numerous events in the past, and asked specifically for it to be in the film.

 on

Needless to say, featured in a movie that has been seen across the globe helps in sales. But how much?

Lee tells Business Insider that over the weekend the Bow and Arrow website had around a 1,000 orders for its various shirts featuring Bruce Lee, totaling about $60,000 in sales.

That’s an increase of about 10,000% percent, according to Lee.

“Our normal weekend, we do about $600 in web sales,” Lee told BI via email.

Lee said along with the bump in online sales, he’s also fielding calls from the boutiques in L.A. that carry the shirt that need to restock.

The shirt featured in “Ultron,” called “Gung Fu Scratch,” is part of a licensing agreement Bow and Arrow has with Bruce Lee’s estate to sell high-end shirts that feature the martial arts legend.

According to Lee (no relation), the company has had the licensing agreement with Bruce Lee Enterprises since 2011.

The image on the shirt, in fact, is a heavily photoshopped photo of Lee.

According to Lee, Gung Fu Scratch was the first design he and his graphic designer made under the Bruce Lee licensing agreement.

“I really wanted to see Bruce Lee relevant in today’s age,” said Lee in regards to the inspiration behind the shirt.

Here's what's photoshopped in the image.

In the last few years, Downey Jr. hasn’t been the only one seen out wearing the shirt. Here are some other notables.

“For a while the inside joke in the company was that we had more celebrity customers than actual costumers,” said Lee.

Looks like that's about to change.

Why you should be watching Fox’s excellent ‘The Last Man on Earth’

$

Last Man on Earth Will Forte

This article contains spoilers for "The Last Man on Earth."

Sunday night television is usually ruled by AMC and HBO, who dominate the landscape with "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones."

But thanks to FOX's "The Last Man on Earth," which just had its season one finale on Sunday, May 3, network television once again rejoins watercooler conversation status.

The comedy about the end of the world may not be a ratings juggernaut like the two previously mentioned shows, but it was just picked up for a second season.

For those who have not seen "The Last Man on Earth," it stars Will Forte (who is also the show's creator) as Phil Miller (a portmanteau of the show's producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller), who seems to be the last person alive after a deadly virus sweeps the planet. Phil travels around the country, steals priceless items from the White House, and then settles in a Tucson, Arizona mansion to live out the rest of his days.

If you missed out on watching the first season, here's why you should catch up.

The show is backed by a creative force

Phil Lord Chris Miller Will FortePhil Lord and Christopher Miller are the miracle workers who turned "21 Jump Street," "22 Jump Street," and "The Lego Movie" into instant classics. Once again, they took an idea that could have been one dimensional (a man surviving the apocalypse) and gave it heart and a sense of purpose.

Lord and Miller are joined by Forte, the "Saturday Night Live" alumni who has written every episode of "Last Man" and stars in nearly every scene, expertly acting alongside a volleyball in one scene and a cow in another.

It's great to see Forte's odd and surreal sense of humor finally be rewarded. If you have ever watched any of his "SNL" sketches (which were typically too strange to air in the first half of the show), or 2010's underrated "MacGruber" (which has amassed a cult following), then you will know exactly what you're getting yourself into.

It doesn't look like a typical network sitcom

The Last Man on Earth

Breaking BadTraditional sitcoms are typically limited to a few spaces. It could be somebody's living room, a bar, or a coffee shop, but they typically don't go too far beyond that.

"Last Man" uses the expansive southwestern desert as its playground. It will remind you more of "Breaking Bad" than "The Mindy Project" or "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." After all, both shows open with men with questionable morals driving a giant vehicle through the desert. According to Grantland, Forte even cited the late AMC drama as a major inspiration.

The show is really good at keeping big plot points secret

Last Man on Earth Kristen SchaalIn a world where spoilers are almost impossible to avoid, "Last Man" does an impressive job at holding in its biggest surprises.

If you watch the show on cable, you may notice that the description for many episodes simply read as some variation of "Phil Miller continues to live in Tucson." (IMDB offers much more detailed breakdowns).

last man on earth episode descriptions

The only other show on TV right now that is this good at withholding information is "Mad Men."

It leaves a lot to the imagination

Last Man on Earth Will ForteStories set in the future typically involve a lot of world-building. Yet, Lord, Miller, and Forte want us to know as little as possible. What caused the virus that ended the world? What was going on in that one flashback of Phil that we saw? Why does a cow show up out of the blue when it seems like even cockroaches haven't survived this apocalypse?

That doesn't matter. This is not a show about how the world will end, but rather how somebody might behave if the apocalypse occurred.

The protagonist is a terrible person — and that makes him compelling to watch

Last Man on EarthPhil Miller is a selfish person who sometimes borders on being a flat-out sociopath, and, yet, he is the one that we are supposed to root for while watching.

That's what makes him so interesting. Phil will go to such extreme lengths to get what he wants without caring who he is hurting around him. In fact, his intention is usually to hurt others. It wasn't until recently that he finally gained some self-awareness and realized he's sort of a monster.

In the "Seinfeld" tradition, Phil is hard to root for. But unlike a lot of traditional sitcom characters, Phil also seems capable of change (emphasis on the word "seems"). Yet, every time a new person gets added to Phil's world, the more selfish and awful he is willing to be in order to get what he wants.

Every episode is a pleasant, unexpected surprise

Last Man on Earth January JonesThe ensemble started with just one character (Forte) and since the pilot, it has expanded to several more.

Sure, I could have watched an entire show of Will Forte talking to a balloon with a face drawn on it. However, the new characters bring new relationships, dynamics, and power struggles. It is much more willing than most network sitcoms to throw its characters into unfamiliar, uncomfortable situations. This unpredictability makes it all the more fun to watch, and your best bet is to start from the beginning.

Last Man on Earth"The Last Man on Earth" will be back for season two sometime in the near future, hopefully before the apocalypse.

Fan favorite Boba Fett is reportedly about to get his own 'Star Wars' movie (DIS)

boba fett star wars

Disney and Lucasfilm are making a "Star Wars" spinoff movie based on the beloved character Boba Fett, according to The Wrap.

The movie will come out in 2018 and tell the story of Boba Fett's origin, according to the report. Disney has not confirmed the report.

Boba Fett is one of the most popular characters in the "Star Wars" universe even though he has relatively little screen time in the movies. He's first introduced as a stoic bounty hunter hired by the evil Empire to track down Han Solo and Princess Leia.

In the "Star Wars" prequel movies, it's revealed that Boba Fett is the clone of another bounty hunter named Jango Fett. Jango's clones make up the clone army that start out good, but are actually under the control of evil Emperor Palpatine. The new Boba Fett movie will likely follow what happens to Boba Fett after the prequel movies, though plot details have yet to be confirmed.

Disney and Lucasfilm are making three spinoff "Star Wars" movies in addition to the three movies (Episodes VII, VII, and IX) that follow the main storyline. The spinoffs are called the "Star Wars" Anthology series. The first in the anthology is called "Rogue One" and comes out in 2016. That movie will tell the story of how the Rebels were able to steal the original Death Star plans from the Empire.

The highly anticipated next Star Wars movie, directed by J.J. Abrams, comes out on December 18, 2015 and is called "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." You can see the most recent trailer below.

The annual fundraiser's theme this year is "China: Through the Looking Glass." Guests are encouraged to dress in theme.

Chinese billionaire Silas Chou is this year's host of the $25,000-a-ticket affair, while Jennifer Lawrence, Marissa Mayer, Wendi Deng Murdoch, Gong Li, and Anna Wintour will all serve co-chairs.

But it is Wintour who has overseen the star-studded guest list since 1995.

Selfies are banned at the Met Gala, but these stars are skirting the rules on Instagram

Social media has been banned from the Met Gala this year, but that isn't stopping the celebrities and fashion industry bigwigs invited to the event from indulging in one final selfie before entering.

Everyone from Karen Elson to Kristen Wiig to Diane Von Furstenberg is appearing in pre-Gala photos on Instagram. It's a bold move, to be sure, as Anna Wintour — the hostess behind the event — has made her disdain for selfies known, even before the ban.

Many of the posts are being put up by designers' official Instagram accounts, which makes sense. The brands want to get as much bang for their buck as they can from the bold-faced names wearing their clothes.

Plus, ads from them are what keep the lights on at "Vogue" — Anna Wintour is unlikely to get mad at Ralph Lauren for posting one or two pre-Met Gala photos online.

Of course, those of us following along at home are thankful for the sneaky selfies — how else would we see who's getting ready with whom? The only question now is whether anyone will be brazen enough to sneak a Snapchat or Instagram inside the event in an hour or so.

People are furious about this year's 'borderline racist' Met Gala theme

Karolina Kurkova met ball

Search the #MetGala hashtag on Twitter, and you won't just find fashion fans gushing over their favorite looks— not this year, anyway.

The theme for tonight's event is "China: Through the Looking Glass," and some people are offended by how guests have interpreted it.

Met Gala guests usually dress to match the theme. When punk rock was on the menu, for example, Marissa Mayer wore a blue streak in her hair. And when style from the British Isles was being honored, Sarah Jessica Parker wore a tartan dress by Alexander McQueen as a nod to his Scottish heritage.

But this year, many are offended by those who are dressing on-theme:

Some have apparently been preparing for disappointment from attendees since before the event started.

Some are taking issue with what they see as cultural appropriation from guests, who were encouraged to think about how Chinese culture has influenced American and European fashion and apply that to their fashion choices.

In addition to flouting the theme, Paltrow complained about how "un-fun" the gala was, telling USA Today that it was too hot and she didn't enjoy it at all. "It was boiling. It was too crowded. I'm never going again," she said.

Whether she meant those words or not, they're likely to keep her off the guest list as long as Anna Wintour is presiding over it.

The hosts of the Met Gala banned selfies and social media from the event, but that didn't stop stars from posting photos before, during and after the black-tie affair.

In addition to the copious selfies posted while stars got ready for the night, Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus and even "Vogue" editor at large Hamish Bowles were among those who broke the rules by posting photos from inside the event. Social media devotees Cara Delevingne and Chrissy Teigen, however, surprisingly didn't post anything from last night's events.

Afterward, Instagrammers got to see what went on at the various über-exclusive after-parties. Click through to see who attended Lady Gaga and Alexander Wang's party at the Paramount, who attended the Standard Hotel's bash, who posted the most photos and who defied the social media ban.

Hamish Bowles also Instagrammed the performance, but seeing as he's one of Anna Wintour's right-hand editors, he probably gets a pass.

Anna Wintour's biggest rival just blasted her on Instagram

Contrary to what Instagram would have you believe, not every fashion insider was present at the Met Gala last night.

Anna Wintour might be the most recognizable magazine editor in America, but Katie Grand, Marc Jacobs' go-to stylist and the editor of "LOVE" magazine, is just as important to fashion insiders.

Grand will never attend the Met Gala, though, and has never been photographed with Anna Wintour.

She did, however, take last night as an opportunity to throw major shade at Wintour's event on Instagram:

 on

The photo is reposted from another Instagram account and shows a meme currently circulating the internet, poking fun at Sarah Jessica Parker and Rihanna's outsize fashion choices from last night's event.

The caption is nonchalant: "#METgala Regram @henryholland" with a balloon emoji.

As far as fashion editors go, Grand is the Keith Richards to Wintour's Paul McCartney. She's known for highlighting grittier and more artistic style in "LOVE" magazine, while "Vogue" is more traditional and luxury-focused. If you're a fan of feminine florals, for example, "Vogue" will be your best bet, as seen below.

 on

When "LOVE" hosts events, like last year's Christmas party thrown with edgy design house Balmain, intricate and complicated black-tie getups are left at the door in favor of sexy, rock-and-roll party gear. And "LOVE" editorials are not nearly as over-the-top as those "Vogue" features.

Also, Grand includes a Kardashian-Jenner or two in almost every issue, where Wintour is a bit more reluctant to saturate "Vogue" with reality TV stars, Kimye cover notwithstanding.

 on

Grand is responsible for this famous Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne cover, too:

 on

Wintour and Grand do not have a public feud, per se, but the paltry results when you Google Grand and Wintour keywords together speak for themselves:

When she was a girl, Grand long hoped she'd become a "Vogue" editor, but as she climbed the ranks of the British fashion industry from within and made friends with Stella McCartney and Giles Deacon, she adjusted her focus. From a profile of Grand from the "Guardian":

"She has abandoned her initial ambition to become editor of Vogue, because 'I realised a couple of years ago that, much as I love Vogue and W, the kind of magazines that are closest to my heart are the style magazines, like The Face, i-D, Interview. I find Interview magazine really inspiring - not that I'm comparing myself to Andy Warhol! - and I suppose I want to build POP into something equally iconic, with covers people remember.'"

Now, she presides over one of the fashion industry's must-read titles and enjoys a close friendship with Marc Jacobs, serving as his stylist on almost every occasion.

 on

Grand is not the only person to seemingly take issue with the night's over-the-top garb. Plenty of people on Twitter complained that the clothes worn at the Chinese-themed event were culturally insensitive. Don't expect a response from Wintour, though — she doesn't even have Instagram.

These oddly dark toilet paper commercials were made by the director of 'Foxcatcher' — and they're amazing

Bennett Miller

Two-time Academy Award nominated director Bennett Miller ("Capote," "Moneyball," "Foxcatcher") has taken a surprising step in his career as a film director: he made a series of very funny toilet paper commercials.

Miller was recruited to direct a series of TV spots for Quilted Northern toilet paper. Miller is normally known for bringing to life the stories of such dark, real-life people as Truman Capote and John du Pont.

"We knew from his films that his style of direction, along with his sensibilities in storytelling and his acute attention to detail in set design and art direction would deliver a compelling treatment for this campaign," Nathan Lennon, Creative Director at Droga5 (the agency that put the commercials together) told Business Insider in an email.

These commercials seem to be playing heavily on his dark nature as a director.

Quilted Northern AdIn the ads, the typical objects one might find in a bathroom (bath toys, bird wallpaper, a photo of your great grandfather) come to life and comment on the reliability of Quilted Northern.

Quilted Northern AdAccording to Adweek, the Quilted Northern campaign was based off research that "people only remember toilet paper when it doesn't work." Thus, their new slogan is "designed to be forgotten."

Miller isn't the first highly esteemed director to take on advertising: David Fincher (Apple, Nike), Spike Jonze (IKEA, Levi's) and Wes Anderson (American Express, Stella Artois) have all directed commercials in the past.

"Bennett has become a master of storytelling through character, and while there are clearly no people in these films, it was clearly a very human story, which we knew a director such as Bennett would zero in on and draw out very real human-like emotions from these poor inanimate objects," Lennon said.

Quilted Northern AdMiller hasn't said much about the commercials except that he "acknowledged directing the ads." He also "added that they were fun."

Check out the commercials below:
