Why these two characters are allowed to appear in both the 'X-Men' and 'Avengers' movies

One of the biggest obstacles the "Avengers" sequel had to overcome was introducing, and constantly referring to two new characters, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

In the comic world, fans know the super-powered brother and sister duo as X-Men. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, aka Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, are the children of Magneto, who has been played on screen by Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender, and are one of many characters referred to as mutants for having a gene which allows them super abilities.

Naturally, you would expect to see the two in an "X-Men" film since Marvel licensed 20th Century Fox the rights to use those characters from Marvel in 1993

Last year, we sort of did. Evan Peters played a young, rambunctious version of Quicksilver, who quickly became a fan favorite. His sister, Wanda, was hinted at in a brief deleted scene.

quicksilver xmen days of future pastwanda maximoff xmen days of future pastSince the two characters have been a part of the Avengers team throughout the years, however, the two are also allowed to pop up in Disney's Marvel movie "The Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Disney and 20th Century Fox's shared rights over the Marvel brother and sister allows the characters to appear in both an X-Men and Avengers film played by two different sets of actors.

If that doesn't already sound slightly confusing, here's where things get trickier.

While Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are allowed to appear on screen as "Avengers," they're not allowed to be referred to as mutants, a term which is exclusive to the X-Men. They're also not allowed to have any connection to their famous father, Magneto.

Disney, which owns Marvel publishing, has recently retconned the siblings' comic book origin story to cut their tie with Magneto and the mutants, presumably as a way to promote its own movies ahead of Fox's.

"Age of Ultron" also establishes its own mutant-free origin story.

avengers age of ultron quicksilver scarlet witchOne thought was that they may be referred to as Inhumans, a group of genetically-altered humans created to make an advanced race.

Marvel head Kevin Feige has said, however, there would be no connection between the twins and the Inhumans, who will be getting their own movie in November 2018

Instead, the "Avengers" sequel gives the twins a new origin story.

Some minor spoilers follow.

In "Ultron," Pietro and Wanda Maximoff are of Eastern European descent. To rid of any connection to the X-Men, it's revealed that at the age of 10, their parents were killed in a bombing.

The twins later join up with terrorist organization H.Y.D.R.A. to undergo some voluntary experiments and end up gaining super abilities. Pietro, aka Quicksilver, is lightning fast, while Wanda, the Scarlet Witch, has telekinetic abilities.

Instead of being called mutants, the duo, and anyone with special powers, is referred to as enhanced.

You can see the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" out May 1 in the US.

How Spike's new 'Lip Sync Battle' landed its A-list celebrity contenders and became a breakout hit

Before it was a viral sensation and a ratings boon for Spike TV, “Lip Sync Battle” was just a segment on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.” So, why would any A-List star sign on for a full show dedicated to celebrities pretending to sing?

“There were a lot of people that we called initially that loved the idea and were so supportive, but just couldn’t quite wrap their head around doing it in the first season,” Casey Patterson, executive producer of “Lip Sync Battle,” told Business Insider. “You’re asking people who don’t sing for a living to come out and do that, and they couldn’t quite get there."

A few months later, the story is very different.

“They were watching. They were waiting to see it, and now we’re hearing from all of those people,” added Patterson, who also acts as Viacom Entertainment Group’s talent development and production executive.

lip sync battle john krasinski tina turner dressHosted by LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen, “Lip Sync Battle” pits stars against each other in two rounds of karaoke — one stripped down performance and the other turned up. Its premiere was watched by 2.2 million people and became Spike's most-watched unscripted program ever. Last week, it was renewed for a second season.

Its first season has included such big-name contenders as Dwayne Johnson, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Michael Strahan, Anna Kendrick, and Jennifer Lopez.

How did it get so many A-listers to shed their inhibitions and take the stage? That didn’t come easy and took a huge group effort, some long nights, and several favors.

BI spoke with one of the show's executive producers and its director to find out.

1.) They hit up their famous friends.

Lip Sync Battle spike ll cool jWhen “Lip Sync Battle” began production, it was still an untested concept. As a guest segment on “The Tonight Show,” it had yet to be introduced. And its breakout viral Emma Stone moment was months from happening.

“Everyone called their friends, absolutely, and it was a family affair, 100% every single person around the table, including myself,” Patterson remembered. “LL Cool J was calling all of his friends.”

“He was making calls at two o’clock in the morning,” interjected director Beth McCarthy-Miller, whose credits include 'SNL’ and dozens of half-hour comedies.

2.) They kept their famous producers close.

lip sync battle stephen merchantWhen your executive producers include Fallon, John Krasinski (“The Office”) and Stephen Merchant (“Hello Ladies”), it’s nice to keep them close.

“We had to earn the trust of the talent community, because we’re asking a lot,” Patterson said. “We’re asking them to come up and potentially make fools of themselves and to really commit to it, and I think he reason it worked is because everyone around the table showed up. All the partners showed up. Everyone was there producing. John Krasinski was backstage… he actually produced the backstage package for Anne Hathaway.”

At the same time, Spike had something to prove to the show's producers and were willing to do whatever it took to make the show a success.

"Spike wouldn’t be the first thing you think of when you think of lip-sync battling," Patterson said. "There are so many outlets and so many places that you can go and it was very forward thinking, and a big leap of faith, that those guys chose us. Rick Schwartz and Jay Peterson brought it to us and we were very [appreciative]."

3.) They let the stars choose whatever songs they want, no matter the cost.

Lip Sync Battle spike the rockThe show definitely could have saved some money by making the stars pick from a selected book of songs, but producers decided not to curtail song choices.

“It’s not an inexpensive proposition because of the music,” Patterson pointed out.

“It’s already the toughest ask in Hollywood,” she added. “It’s moving so far outside their comfort zones that they need the level of comfort that they can pick their own songs, they need that level of comfort. We’re not going to musicians, for the most part, we’re going to celebrities who don’t sing for a living.”

4.) They made the experience easy.

Lip Sync Battle spike anne hathaway 2Hathaway, for example, was rehearsing for her one-woman off-Broadway show, “Grounded,” and told the lip sync show's producers she’d be limited on time. So, the team got to work.

“We brought our choreographer, Danielle [Flora], who is unbelievable,” said McCarthy-Miller. “She works at ‘SNL’ as well, and she knows how to do as minimal or as much and be able to teach it to somebody quickly just to kind of help formulate the performances. It was a perfect storm of everybody and it was really one of those Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland movies. Everybody was like, ‘OK, I can do this. All right. I’ll go get a wig. OK, here’s some costumes.’ It was everybody totally engaged in wanting to make the show awesome.”

5.) They chose the right director.

lip sync battle nbc jimmy fallon spikeMcCarthy-Miller has taken everything she has learned from “SNL” and other projects in order to apply them here.

"Aside from how much I love Beth and our friendship, I really felt like there’s isn’t anyone else who knowing that we’re going to have a limited amount of time with people, and where we need to get them,” Patterson said. “She’s really the only person I could think of that is capable of that and at such a level that you’re seeing the results of that."

McCarthy-Miller stood in for Madonna with Fallon while they waited to hear if she’d make a cameo during his performance of “Like a Prayer” and later joined his conga line. She also sang “Material Girl” for Taraji P. Henson at least 10 times so she could concentrate on choreography without playing the actual music.

“I was just trying to help,” the director explained.

Samuel L. Jackson had the perfect response to the writer who made his 'Avengers' role possible

$

In a 2002 comic, writer Mark Millar and artist Bryan Hitch changed Marvel spy chief Nick Fury from a white guy to a black guy who looked exactly like Samuel L. Jackson, and they did it without Jackson's permission.

"Ultimates" has been cited as a major influence for the Avengers movies by everyone from "Avengers" director Joss Whedon to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, and nowhere is that more clear than in the casting of Jackson as Fury.

nick fury samuel l jacksonnick fury samuel l jacksonMillar told BI over email what happened when he finally met Jackson years later:

One of my books was adapted recently as Kingsman: The Secret Service, where Sam played the bad guy, and we finally got to hang out on the set. The first thing I said was I hope you don’t mind me completely exploiting your appearance in my book thirteen years back and he said ‘fuck, no, man. Thanks for the 9 picture deal’. He’s fantastic.

As for why he and Hitch made Fury look like Jackson in the first place, Millar writes:

I wanted an African-American Nick Fury to be director of SHIELD because the closest thing in the real world to this job title was held by Colin Powell at the time. I also thought Nick Fury sounded like one of those great, 1970s Blaxploitation names and so the whole thing coalesced for me into a very specific character, an update of the cool American super-spy Jim Steranko had done in the 70s and based on the Rat Pack, which seemed very nineteen sixties and due for some kind of upgrade.

Sam is famously the coolest man alive and both myself an artist Bryan Hitch just liberally used him without asking any kind of permission. You have to remember this was 2001 when we were putting this together. The idea that this might become a movie seemed preposterous as Marvel was just climbing out of bankruptcy at the time. What we didn’t know was that Sam was an avid comic fan and knew all about it.

Millar's book was pretty explicit about using Jackson as a model. Fury even jokes in one issue that he should be played by Jackson in a hypothetical movie.

nick fury samuel l jackson

Jackson said in a 2012 interview with LA Times that he contacted Marvel after seeing his likeness in the comic and asked for a part in any eventual movie: "They were kind of like, 'Yeah, we are planning on making movies, and we do hope you’ll be a part of them.'"

In the same comic, characters suggest casting Brad Pitt as Captain America, Johnny Depp as Tony Stark, Matthew McConnaughey as Giant-Man, Lucy Liu as the Wasp, and Steve Buscemi as Bruce Banner (or as he would prefer, Freddie Prinze Jr.).

While Marvel's Avengers movies didn't take Millar's other casting suggestions, they took a lot of plot elements from "Ultimates," including the main villains.

As Millar told New Empress Magazine in 2012: "Kevin Fiege was a big fan of the books and told us it made him realise an Avengers movie could actually be a lot simpler than they’d thought and so they used book one and the ending to book two as the template for the movie, which is enormously flattering."

marvel ultimatesWhen Millar took on the project, however, a movie was the last thing on people's minds. He tells BI:

My first book at Marvel was a reboot of the X-Men and it launched at number 1 so they asked me what I wanted to do next. I said I wanted to reboot The Avengers and they winced because the X-Men and Spider-Man titles were their biggest sellers at the time. The Avengers family of characters, they told me, were a waste of my time and they asked me to do a Wolverine book instead. But I was really passionate about this. It was a real labour of love and I had the perfect artist in Bryan Hitch to give this book a very realistic feel that tied together all the characters in a much more natural way I felt mainstream audiences would get.

Marvel at this point had these characters scattered across different studios like New Line, Universal and one or two others so a movie was never in consideration. Their single purpose at the time was getting the comic-division back into the black as things had been quite rough for a couple of years. Anything that happened after is just because the material worked well for the mainstream and was described by readers as cinematic. Of course, we didn’t realise six or seven years later we were going to see all this start to come together as a movie. Marvel weren’t self-financing until 2008.

avengers age of ultronMillar has had a hand in an insane number of other comic movies, too, creating "Kick-Ass," "Wanted," and "The Secret Service: Kingsman" as part of his Millarworld publishing house, writing the "Civil War" comic that will be the basis of the next "Captain America" movie, as well as overseeing Fox's Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When I mentioned that Whedon and Feige have cited his work as an influence on "The Avengers," he offered this comment on his legacy:

It’s nice of them to point it out and we’re proud of the work we did. We didn’t own those characters and we’re very philosophical about what they use in the movies. I left Marvel a few years back to create Millarworld, really just trying to BECOME Marvel I guess and the revamp of The Avengers I did was a wonderful step towards that as it gave me an audience I could bring my own characters like Kick-Ass, Wanted, Kingsman and all the new stuff too. I still have a really good relationship with those guys, but am full time creating my own thing now. We’re on franchise twelve in publishing and just sold franchises eight and nine as movies (Chrononauts to Chris Morgan at Universal and Jupiter’s Legacy to Lorenzo DiBonaventura). Revamping The Avengers was an amazing six years of my life, though. As a fanboy it was kind of a dream. I feel I’ve left my mark on Marvel, which is exciting, but as Stan Lee himself said to me at the time I really had to go out there and create my own stuff.

One of the biggest teases from the ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ trailer won’t even be in the movie

When the first trailers for "Avengers: Age of Ultron" came out, we were left with way more questions than answers.

Particularly, there were a few mysterywomen in the trailers that had fans buzzing.

We quickly learned the woman in one of the initial trailers was Korean actress Kim Soo-hyun, also known as Claudia Kim. We won't say much about her role or her character's name.

avengers age of ultron mystery womanHowever, one of the biggest question marks revolved around the character below, who appeared in the second full trailer for the film.

Remember this brief scene?

avengers age of ultron womanFans online have predicted the woman above is related in some way to Marvel's upcoming Black Panther character. The theories are that she's either Shuri, Black Panther's sister, or one of his bodyguards.

We imagined it would have been one of the big reveals in the film.

Nope!

After heading to a screening of the film April 9, the scene with the above character didn't appear in the finished film.

If you're a big Marvel fan who has been poring over the marketing of "Age of Ultron" for months on end, it will be pretty obvious to you that the scene is missing.

We figured since Marvel had no issue revealing the full image of Vision nearly a month before the film's premiere that there would be a bigger reveal in the film, such as the one above.

Nope.

Maybe it will be a deleted scene on a Blu-Ray, but that feels like a pretty big reveal to leave out of the film.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" is in theaters May 1.

GameStop will buy and then sell your old Nintendo — and it might be a terrible idea

Nintendo Entertainment System

Classic video games can be hard to find. And even when you do find them, will they function?

Blowing into that copy of "Duck Hunt" you found at the garage sale down the block isn't going to clean out 30 years of dust, no matter how hard you try.

The world's largest game retailer, GameStop, is trying to solve this issue. Starting on April 25, GameStop locations in the New York City and Birmingham regions (around 250 stores) started accepting classic games and game consoles for trade-in: the original Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super Nintendo, Sega's Genesis and Dreamcast, as well as the first PlayStation and Nintendo 64.

More importantly, about two months from now, GameStop's website is set to roll out a section dedicated to the sale of the aforementioned classic game consoles and compatible games. Translation: GameStop.com will start selling fixed up, classic game consoles and games in about two months.

Those consoles and games come with the usual 30-day guarantee GameStop gives all its used merchandise; the company's able to do that because every single classic game console or game traded in has to go through GameStop's refurbishment center.

"For hardware, we'll put it through a full triage: identify any issues, any cleaning that has to happen, any parts replacement that has to be done. On cartridges, we're gonna be cleaning, testing, and also taking a look at the batteries in there," GameStop senior director of pre-owned merchandising Jon Haes told Business Insider.

Sega Dreamcast

That means you're not just buying classic consoles, but classic consoles that are running at 100%, and guaranteed to work – a major step up from the wilderness of eBay.

The company's hoping to expand its trade-in program to the national level, but is intentionally holding back to test the system. What if it costs too much money to refurbish old hardware? What if consoles fail soon after people bring them home? Are replacement parts even available for the Nintendo Entertainment System – a console that originally launched nearly 30 years ago?

"We're holding ourselves back a little bit so we can learn some of these things, answer some of the questions that you just asked," Haes said. "We've got a lot to learn about what the condition of this product is gonna be like."

GameStop doesn't have a solution for making old game consoles compatibile with new televisions either. While the original NES connects via the same plug that brings cable TV to your living room, consoles like the Sega Dreamcast are dependent on yellow/red/white inputs ("RCA" cables). Some modern TVs simply don't have an RCA input, meaning you'll need to buy a converter of some type.Hyperkin Retron 5

And if all of that sounds like a bit too much work for you, we understand – there are always modern takes of old game consoles like Hyperkin's Retron 5.

While everyone else settles into their favorite flatscreen-equipped bar to watch the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight on Saturday, Manny Pacquiao will be listening to a special playlist to pump himself up — and he's published it on Spotify.

Like any good pump-up sports playlist, it opens with "Eye of the Tiger."

From there, Pacquiao spans the decades, from Sly and the Family Stone to Ed Sheeran.

A pleasant surprise comes in the form of Pacquiao's apparent love of R&B and pop divas.

He includes two Ashanti tracks and Shakira's "La Tortura."

Curiously absent from the list is Pacquiao's own contribution to the annals of music: a cover of "Sometimes When We Touch," which he recorded in 2011. Thankfully, that song lives on via Spotify, too.

Pacquiao will face off against Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand Garden Arena this weekend.

Louis C.K.'s description of his brutally humiliating first two stand-up shows is gold

Louis CK Standup

Louis C.K. is so good at his job that it seems almost impossible to imagine a time where he struggled in comedy. However, his early days navigating stand-up comedy were rocky.

During an interview on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Louis C.K. about his painful first two comedy experiences.

The first time he ever told jokes onstage was at an open mic in Boston (C.K. grew up in nearby Newton).

"It was horrible." C.K. told Terry Gross. "My whole throat constricted and my...I heard this roaring in my ears. My eyes were watering. My heart was pounding, and I couldn't control myself."

After that nerve-wracking first experience, C.K. didn't go to another mic for two years until Kevin Meany, a fixture of the Boston comedy scene at the time, walked into the video store that C.K. worked at and offered him a spot on his show.

Louis CK Young

While some comedians say their first experience doing stand-up was always the worst, the second time for C.K. was no better.

"People's mouths were open. Shocked at how bad I was. Just shocked." C.K. recalled. "And I got onstage and Kevin wouldn't look me in the eye and nobody would. And it was just the most pulverizing humiliation."

The reason it was much worse the second time around is because C.K. was performing at a professional comedy show. Meanwhile, his first outing was an open mic where "the premise of the show is that most of us don't know what we're doing."

However, C.K. doesn't regret the experience at all.

"It was a formative experience. Sitting here now, I'm very glad I had it. It gave me a really realistic, shocking picture of what I was facing," he said.

Louis CKC.K. has always had a dark side to his comedy, and he seems to embrace failure. In fact, he believes the comedians who start out the strongest are usually not the best ones.

"Actually, it's usually the comedians that start awkwardly and badly who end up being interesting." C.K. said "From my experience, when I've seen people show up and from the first day onstage they're just easy, like, really amiable comics who just know how to talk to people, they don't usually end up being that special. They get some quick success but they don't turn into something like really unusual and great."

He might as well be referring to himself.

louie dad daughter kids Louis CK

C.K. took a long time to hone his voice as a comedian. In the interview, he discussed how much he enjoyed telling "weird, offbeat jokes." That eventually earned him a lot of laughs. C.K. spent most of the '90s and early 2000s telling a lot of very surreal jokes. It wasn't until he started telling intensely personal stories about his family in his specials "Shameless" (2007) and "Chewed Up" (2008) that people started calling him the best comic alive. Today, he is one of the top-earning comedians in the world.

But the real reason for his success could probably be boiled down to this one quote from him about his first open mic:

"And I just felt like a pile of garbage. And then I kept doing it."

There is one mid-credits scene in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' — Here's what it means for future Marvel movies

avengers age of ultron captain americaWarning: If you haven't seen "Avengers: Age of Ultron," there are major spoilers ahead!

If you're heading out to see the "Avengers" sequel this weekend, don't head out right after the movie's over.

Although there won't be any added scene after the entire credits roll, there is one brief mid-credits sequence which appears right after the initial credits.

If you left early or are confused by what you saw, here's what you should know.

What happens:

The scene opens over an object shrouded in darkness. When it comes into view, we see it's a golden glove — the Infinity Gauntlet.

We then get another glimpse of Thanos (Josh Brolin), the somewhat mysterious, big, bad villain who we've been seeing teases of since the end of 2012's "The Avengers. He reaches out toward the audience to grab the gauntlet. As he puts it on he says, "Fine, I'll do it myself."

josh brolin infinity gauntlet san diego comic con 2014That's it! (We told you it was short.)

In order to explain what this means, let's break this down into a few items.

What you need to know about Thanos

thanos guardians of the galaxyThanos has a giant grudge against the universe for being born different. He's essentially the Hunchback of Notre Dame of the Marvel Universe, but with a spine.

Thanos was born into a group of superhumans, the Eternals, who live on Saturn's moon, Titan. However, when he was born, he didn't look like any of the other Eternals.

In comparison, here's how his brother, superhero Starfox looks:

starfox marvel thanos' brother
Also known as the Mad Titan, Thanos became power hungry and obsessed with death. (Not only is he obsessed with killing others, but in the comics, he is actually in love with the embodiment of Death itself. More on this in a bit.)

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he's obsessed with gathering and gaining control of the Infinity gemstones and the Infinity Gauntlet to unleash their power. It's noted in "Guardians of the Galaxy" that Thanos is responsible for the death of Drax the Destroyer's (Dave Bautista) family. He's also the ruler of the Chitauri, the alien race that invaded Earth in the first "Avengers" film.

What kind of powers does this guy have?

Avengers, comic con, thanosYou name it, and Thanos essentially has it.

Since Thanos comes from the Eternals, he has every ability endowed to them including super strength, endurance, and agility. Marvel describes his skin as being virtually impenetrable. It can withstand "heat, cold, electricity, radiation, toxins, aging, and disease." A psychic attack most likely won't affect him either. (Sorry, Scarlet Witch.)

Thanos can also blast "cosmic energy" from his eyes and hands.

If all of that isn't enough, Thanos was also granted immortality by Death itself.

So, yeah, The Avengers sound screwed.

So, what is this Infinity Gauntlet item Thanos is after?

thor infinity gauntletThis is what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been building toward for some time!

Through all of the Marvel movies, there has been an entirely larger story arc told in the background often through the end-credits scenes where Thanos has attempted to secure several powerful stones for the Infinity Gauntlet, which he had crafted. When it's combined with six Infinity gemstones, the person in possession receives, in so many words, infinite power.

And, what are the Infinity stones?

We've already been introduced to most of these throughout the Marvel movies. The stones on film appear to differ slightly from the ones introduced in the comics, which have varied over time.

guardians of the galaxy the collectorBenicio del Toro's character The Collector describes the origin of the stones in 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy":

"Before creation itself, there were six singularities. Then the universe exploded into existence, and the remnants of these systems were forged into concentrated ingots. Infinity Stones. These stones, it seems, can only be brandished by beings of extraordinary strength."

The Collector then showed footage of, what looked like, mercenaries who have used the stones before to destroy entire civilizations.

As Thor (Chris Hemsworth) notes at the end of "Age of Ultron," so far, we've only seen four of the six gemstones on screen.

Blue (introduced in "Thor"): The space stone, also known as the Tesseract, is currently at Thor's home in Asgard being watched over by Heimdall (Idris Elba).

tesseract marvel avengersRed (introduced in "Thor: The Dark World"): The Aether was desired by Malekith in order to make the universe black. The Collector is still believed to have it. It's not clear whether it was lost in the shuffle that happened in "Guardians of the Galaxy."

natalie portman thor the dark worldYellow (introduced in "Avengers: Age of Ultron"): The mind stone was held in Loki's Chitauri sceptre and is now in the Vision's head. (That's not a good sign for him moving forward.)

paul bettany vision avengers age of ultronPurple (introduced in "Guardians of the Galaxy"): The power stone is currently being held onto by the Nova Corps on Xandar. The Guardians were able to wield its power together.

Why does Thanos want the Infinity Gauntlet?

the infinity gauntlet

Basically, Thanos wants to wipe out the existence of most life from the universe. In the comics, this is done to impress and win the adoring affections of the aforementioned physical form of Death.

Yes, you read that right.

Not only is the Mad Titan obsessed with the idea of death, but he is also head-over-heels in love with Death.

It's not clear whether this is something the Marvel films plan to touch upon moving forward.

thanos lady death

What the end-credit scene means:

If you've been following all of the mid-credits and end-credits scenes from Marvel films closely, Thanos has been trying to acquire all of the Infinity gemstones. Having failed a number of times to acquire them (first in "The Avengers" after making a deal with Loki to acquire the Tesseract, and later in "Guardians of the Galaxy"), Thanos is finally taking matters into his own hands.

So, while many of the Avengers are taking a break from superhero life at the end of "Age of Ultron," and Thor is off trying to figure out why the gemstones have been popping up, little do they know that things are just starting to get interesting.

Here's the way the 'Avengers' sequel dances around calling its 'X-Men' characters mutants

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" introduces us to two new characters, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

In the comics, the twin brother and sister duo (Wanda and Pietro Maximoff) are part of a large group of mutants in the "X-Men" franchise. The characters are in a unique position because they also happen to become Avengers.

Because Marvel licensed the X-Men characters to 20th Century Fox for use in films back in the '90s, the two can't be referred to as such in Disney's "Avengers" film.

One of the biggest questions for fans heading into "Age of Ultron," was discovering how Marvel would address Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in the film.

Fans don't have to wait long to find out.

Warning: Some minor spoilers ahead if you haven't seen "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

quicksilver captain america avengers age of ultronIn the first few minutes of the movie, Captain America refers to the duo as "enhanced."

"We have an enhanced in the field," Cap tells the rest of the Avengers.

Several times throughout the first leg of the film, this is how Wanda and Pietro are referred to when they're introduced on screen.

Thor asks Captain America about Quicksilver at one point inquiring, "The enhanced?"

Again when Cap talks to S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) he asks about "the two enhanced."

Later, in another country when the two run into another character he intros them by clarifying that they're "the enhanced."

That's it.

There's no mention of mutants or of their famous X-Men dad, Magneto. (Yes, that Magneto.)

It turns out the twins were *mini-spoiler* voluntarily genetically modified by terrorist organization H.Y.D.R.A. *mini-spoiler* and that's how they acquired their superpowers.

For comic lovers, it sure takes some of the excitement out of the two characters who have a history in the X-Men comics before joining up with the Avengers.

Actress Kirstie Alley responds after being confused for 'Christie Ally' in Bridgegate scandal

kirstie alley

Actress Kirstie Alley is being repeatedly confused for "Christie Ally" – or an associate of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R).

The New York Times inadvertently started the mix-up on Friday morning with a headline declaring, "Christie Ally to Plead Guilty in New Jersey Bridge Scandal."

That ally is David Wildstein, the former director of interstate capital projects at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Wildstein is not, it apparently should be noted, "Cheers" actress Kirstie Alley. But people nevertheless had some difficulty distinguishing the two:

Eventually, Alley's name began to trend on Twitter and the actress herself weighed in:

She also responded to an image of a New York Times article featuring a photo of Christie replaced with herself. The newspaper told Business Insider, however, that the photo was fake. "There was no error by The Times," spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades Ha said.

Wildstein is involved in the "Bridgegate" scandal that engulfed Christie's administration and hurt his prospects in the 2016 presidential race. Wildstein ordered the September 2013 lane closures on the George Washington Bridge that some say was political retaliation against the mayor whose town was devastated by the resulting traffic.

There's still no good solution for quitting cable

Coaxial Cable

It's still not possible, in 2015, to "cut the cord" and watch the same stuff you'd watch on cable television over the internet instead.

Google, Apple, Sony, and Microsoft have all tried, but no internet or electronics giant has been able to overtake the aging, archaic, overpriced cable television industry.

The latest contenders are tied to video game consoles. Xbox One has Sling TV, a live television service from Dish that costs a minimum of $20 per month and comes to you over the internet. PlayStation 4 has "PlayStation Vue" – also a live streaming television service, albeit one that has local channels and a much higher minimum payment plan at $50/month.

Neither service offers a serious alternative to cable television. Cord Cutters

Sling TV on Xbox One

I've been using Sling TV on Xbox One since it launched in mid-March of this year. Aside from reminding me how much I don't like live television (so many commercials!), it hasn't convinced me to subscribe. (I'm testing a Sling TV press account provided by Dish.)

It's not just a measure of television being largely terrible, though it is. Navigating the app is like struggling through thick mud. Any misplaced action takes seconds to undo, like switching to a channel by accident. And that's when the app allows you to launch a channel – sometimes it decides not to obey my commands.

Attempting to open the app while Hillary Clinton was announcing her bid for president, Sling TV repeatedly hung at launch for several minutes. After restarting the Xbox One a few times, and multiple subsequent attempts to launch Sling, the app finally opened into live television ...a few minutes after I'd already watched Clinton's announcement on my phone via Twitter.

Hours later, HBO's Sunday night premierefest was happening: "Game of Thrones" followed by "Silicon Valley", "Veep", and "Last Week Tonight." Since Sling TV is based on choosing a specific time slot rather than a channel, the app hitches when programs end. Sometimes it outright switches to another channel, at random, when a show ends. Sometimes it crashes the app. Sometimes, if you're lucky, it continues playing the channel's live broadcast. This was the case on Sunday night with HBO, until halfway through "Last Week Tonight" when it crashed out of nowhere.

I asked Dish, Sling TV's parent company, for a statement on the issues I encountered. Here's what they told me:

We regularly implement updates across all our supported devices, including Xbox One, that continue to enhance the Sling TV experience. In fact, we are doing additional work on the backend this week [the week of April 15] to address some of the specific issues you outlined.

In our initial research, it appears that these issues affect a small fraction of our Xbox One customers. That being said, we are serious about getting this right. Our app has only been on the Xbox One for about a month, and we are working diligently toward ensuring a flawless entertainment experience for our Sling TV customers.

In fairness to Dish, my colleague Steve Kovach has been enjoying a slightly better experience using Sling TV on a Roku 3 set-top box. Chart cord cutters bandwidth

PlayStation Vue on PlayStation 4

Sony's PlayStation Vue, available on PlayStation 4 (and PlayStation 3), is far more akin to a standard cable TV subscription. It has local broadcast channels, premium cable networks, (some) sports and – crucially – the ability to save television shows for up to 30 days. A virtual DVR, essentially. Pretty great!

Better yet, using the service on PlayStation 4 is snappy and dependable – none of the issues I've experienced with Sling TV are mirrored on Vue. Changing channels is quick, as is loading the application and choosing to DVR shows. In short, PlayStation Vue delivers on what it promises: an alternative option to cable.

While its functionality is on par with standard cable, so is its price: The base level Vue package is $50/month, and can be expanded to $70/month with more channels. And this is where I found major issue with Vue. PlayStation Vue packages

As a "cord-cutter" – someone who doesn't have cable TV – I'm not looking for a similarly priced alternative to cable TV. What I want out of PlayStation Vue, and really any service that's supposedly catering to cord-cutters, is a flexible, lower-priced alternative to what cable offers. At $50 for the base level of Vue, plus the cost of internet, there's no price difference from standard cable. My provider, Time Warner, actually offers a less expensive option than $50/month to add cable TV.

In short, Sling TV doesn't function well enough to compete, and PlayStation Vue costs too much to compete. There's still no solution for cord-cutters.

Before she was famous, Kim Kardashian had a successful eBay business

Kim Kardashian ebay

Today, Kim Kardashian runs an empire.

The 34-year-old is an executive producer on her family's hit, long-running reality show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," which was recently renewed at E! for a reported $100 million for the next four years.

Kim also has a super successful video game app, product endorsement deals, a selfie book, and nearly 31 million Instagram followers tracking her every move.

According to Forbes, Kardashian earned $28 million in 2014 alone and was recently named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2015.

But Kardashian, 34, has been working toward this her entire life.

Despite her cushy upbringing in Calabasas, California, Kardashian says she always had a job throughout her teenage years.

Kardashian began her career in retail, telling Variety in a new interview:

I worked at a clothing store for four years. I loved it. When I turned 16, my dad made me sign a contract — he made us sign contracts for everything — that if I hit my car, I would be responsible for paying for it. I was in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and I tapped someone. It was so not a big deal, but I had to pay for it. It was during the O.J. trial. They saw my last name and said, “Kardashian, your dad’s that lawyer?!” They sued me for a lot of money. After I paid them back, I kept on working to buy myself some clothes.

Kim Kardashian ebay 5After working in stores, Kim soon discovered a whole new world of online shopping  and selling.

I discovered eBay and I loved shopping. I had to be on a budget. I didn’t have credit cards. How do I figure out how to make this a business? I remember I bought these Manolo Blahnik shoes that were $700. He [Kim's late father, Robert] let me buy five pairs. I had to pay him back plus interest. I sold every pair on eBay for $2,500. I became so obsessed with seeing that return, I would sell off the things I wouldn’t be wearing.

Kardashian explains that she made such a profit off of the shoes because she had a good eye for trends and what people would want to buy.

"They were these Manolo Blahniks that Jennifer Lopez had worn in her first or second video," Kardashian explains. "Everyone had to have them. I called at the right time and the girl at the store had five pairs and I took them."

Kim Kardashian ebayFrom there, Kardashian created a business of cleaning out her celebrity friends' closets and selling the goods on eBay, while taking a cut of the profit. Kardashian went by the eBay username "kimsaprincess," an account she started all the way back in 2002.

Feedback provided on her second and third sales ever note she offered "exquisite Dior boots" and "authentic Louis Vuitton."

KIm Kardashian ebay In 2006, a then unknown Kardashian was even featured on pal Paris Hilton's reality show "The Simple Life" as the heiress' closet organizer.

Paris Hilton Kim Kardashian
"My closet business came about when I was at my godparents' house, Sugar Ray Leonard and his wife Bernadette," Kardashian explained to Player Magazine in 2006. "Bernadette's closet was massive and had so much stuff in it. I said to her, 'You really need to clean out your closet.' Well, we spent the whole night doing that."

"Kim convinced Bernadette to sell the designer clothing on eBay rather than throw it away," explained Player magazine. "She was so successful at it that Bernadette started recommending Kim to her friends. Soon, celebrities like Kenny G, and Rob Lowe and his wife, started hiring her. Before long, Kim was organizing and cleaning out closets for everyone from Cindy Crawford to Serena Williams, as well as friends like Nicky Hilton and Nicole Richie. Her clients jokingly tagged her with the moniker, 'Queen of the Closet Scene.'"

Kim Kardashian serena williamsToday, Kardashian still uses eBay to sell her castoffs and donates a portion of proceeds to various charities, mainly the Kardashian's family church in Agoura Hills. Many of Kim's family members have jumped on the bandwagon, too.

kim kardashian closetBetween February 2013 and February 2014, the Kardashian clan sold just under 2,000 pieces successfully on eBay — raking in $277,469.60 from auction items, Cosmopolitan reported at the time.

The family uses an "auction management service" called Auction Cause, which basically does the dirty work of re-selling for them.

Below is a breakdown of the Kardashian's 2013 through 2014 eBay sales, from most profitable family member to the least:

Kardashians ebay infographicKim, by far the most profitable of the bunch, sold a lot of designer duds between 2013 and 2014.

At Cosmpolitan's countmost-often sold designers include: "Christian Louboutin (15 listings), Givenchy (9 listings), Balenciaga (7 listings), and Alexander McQueen (6 listings). She also sold 16 pairs of 7 for all Mankind jeans, maternity clothing, and a shit-ton of K Dash/Kardashian Kollection merchandise."

Cosmopolitan further broke down each family member's best and worst selling items below:

Kardashian ebay chartDespite her big eBay sales, Kim was criticized in December 2013 for holding a charitable auction for disaster relief in the Phillipines following Typhoon Haiyan — but only donating 10% of the profits.

Kardashian addressed the issue on her blog, saying "I don't publicize everything I do to help charities and people all over the world."

"My dad always taught me the importance of giving back. I don't publicize everything I do to help charities and people all over the world. I do it because I want to. I do it because my dad taught me to. I do it because it's the right thing to do. So for people to attack me for giving 10% of my eBay auction sales to the people of the Philippines, that hurts.

She also explained how eBay breaks down auction profits:

In regards to these eBay auctions, when the eBay numbers get broken down, the auction management agency that posts for me gets a percentage for all of their hard work, then eBay listing fees, end of auction fees, eBay Store fees, Paypal fees, etc., all add up to about half of the sale. Then I give 10% to a charity. Over the last 5+ years, I have listed thousands of items on eBay Giving Works for various causes. I will continue to do what is in my heart and am happy to know many others have enjoyed purchasing from me, as they too are giving with me.

When not selling their used goods online, the Kardashian sisters also have clothing store Dash, which sells trendy, new womenswear.

Founded in 2006 by Kim, Kourtney and Khloe, there are currently three Dash boutiques across the U.S. including Miami Beach, New York City, and Los Angeles.

Dash KardashiansKim says that when she was first approached about a reality show, she looked at it as a way to promote the stores.

"When the opportunity for our TV show came about, I wanted to do it to bring attention to our stores," Kardashian told Variety. "I was thinking this might not last very long, but we’ll grow a great business and expand online. I thought it would be great press. I didn’t think it would turn into what it turned into."

Avengers Age of Ultron Behind the Scenes

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" is just under two-and-a-half hours long, but it didn't start out that way.

According to a lengthy article in Vulture, director Joss Whedon's first cut of "Age of Ultron" clocked in at a lengthy three and a half hours. Whedon and producer Kevin Feige then had to whittle it down to 142 minutes. (Disney told us at a press screening the film has a 141-minute runtime.)

Nobody knows exactly which scenes were lost in the 68 or so minutes that were removed from the final cut.

However, one notable scene that we know was removed is one that may have predicted the arrival of Marvel's upcoming Black Panther character. The below, brief shot featuring a mysterious woman was included in the trailer, but not in the theatrical version of the film.

avengers ultron mystery womanMarvel president Kevin Feige also told MTV News a scene with future superheroine Captain Marvel was cut from the film.

"We didn’t want to introduce her fully-formed flying in a costume before you got to know who she was and how she came to be," said Feige.

The final "Age of Ultron" runtime is lengthy, but still not that long when compared to other popular summer blockbusters. For instance, "The Dark Knight Rises" clocked in at 165 minutes.

In fact, "Age of Ultron" is even shorter than than the first "Avengers," something which Joss Whedon surprisingly envisioned but thought would never actually happen.

"I said to [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige] before we started, 'My secret fantasy that'll never come true is that the second one is shorter than the first,'" Whedon said, "and we're shorter by a minute."

Here's the moment Michael Keaton realized he wasn’t going to win his first Oscar

Michael Keaton Letterman

In "Birdman," Michael Keaton played a struggling actor looking to make his big comeback.

"Birdman" itself was a comeback vehicle for Keaton. It earned him his first ever Oscar nomination for best actor. While he was a frontrunner to win — Keaton had taken home the Golden Globe for best actor— he went home empty-handed.

Keaton thought he had a good shot at the award. Keaton went on the "Late Show with David Letterman" recently and described an encounter he had with a voter at an Academy Awards luncheon. This one voter complimented his performance.

michael keaton birdman"I want to tell you that's maybe the best performance I've ever seen in a movie," the man told Keaton.

After hearing that, Keaton thought he was a lock.

But just as Keaton was getting up to leave, the man grabbed him and told him one more thing.

"Just remember Michael: When it comes to winning an Academy Award, illness always wins," he told Keaton.

"And then I thought, I am so f----ed right now!" Keaton told Letterman.

Keaton ended up losing the award to Eddie Redmayne. Redmayne played Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything," which portrays Hawking's battle with ALS.

Michael Keaton OscarsThe "illness always wins" mantra refers to something that has become a bit of a joke amongst people who follow awards season, in that playing a character with a disability or disease can typically get you an Oscar.

According to the BBC, 16% of all Oscar winners have won for playing such a role. This was the subject of a now famous scene from "Tropic Thunder" (ironically, this performance earned Robert Downey Jr. an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor).

However, that same BBC article also pointed out that a "total of 12% of best actor and actress wins have been for roles associated with showbiz." In "Birdman," Keaton played an action movie star who makes his Broadway debut.

While these trends are evident and very noticable, somebody's "lock" over a category can change in an instant.

"I went from 'this is a done deal' to 'I'm done,'" Keaton said.

spectre car chase in rome

James Bond's latest adventure, "Spectre," doesn't hit theaters until November, but short clips from the movie are already making their way onto the internet.

The latest clip to emerge features a behind the scenes look at a spectacular chase scene through the streets of Rome.

In the clip, an orange Jaguar C-X75 driven by the evil henchman Mr. Hinx (Dave Bautista) chases Bond's silver Aston Martin DB10 at night.

"It's a cat and mouse game through the night-time streets of Rome at great speed with two of the fastest cars in the world, neither of which you've ever seen before, " Bond director Sam Mendes said of the scene.

Aston Martin DB10The Aston Martin DB10 is the latest in the long line of James Bond Astons, with roots going all the way back to Sean Connery's DB5 in 1964's "Goldfinger."

The Aston Martin DB10 was designed and built at the request of Mendes and the Bond film's producers. A total of 10 cars were created for use in the films. Unfortunately, the DB10 won't be sold to the public.

Jaguar C-X75

The carbon-fiber C-X75 hybrid supercar concept first debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show to rave reviews. The car even managed to take home Autoweek's "Best in Show" award.

"This will be the finest looking and most innovative Jaguar ever created,” Jaguar head designer Ian Callum said. "Even in the world of supercars, we can still produce the most beautiful."

"C-X75 is an exciting project for us and a clear statement of Jaguar’s intent to continue creating bold, innovative and beautiful performance cars."

Jaguar C-X75 BondAccording to Autocar, sources "involved with the project" report that the supercar concept has undergone modifications for the upcoming film. This includes the removal of the C-X75's 800 horsepower hybrid powertrain. In its place will be Jaguar's trusty 5.0-liter, supercharged V8 engine, from the company's award-winning F-Type sports car

A lot of folks hoped that the model would make it into production. Sadly, however, Jaguar decided to cancel the project in 2013. Fortunately, many of the C-X75's design elements made it into the company's gorgeous F-Type coupe and convertible.

James Bond's 24th adventure hits theaters on November 6, 2015.
