A fan asked Christopher Nolan about the end of 'Inception' and he explained why he'd never tell

Christopher Nolan Tribeca

Christopher Nolan has garnered a reputation for ending his films with mind-boggling twists.

The one that still seems to perplex people the most is 2010's "Inception."

If you haven't seen the film, there are spoilers ahead.

At the end of "Inception," Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) finally returns home to his kids after spending a long time in the dream world. Cobb carries a little top with him. If the top keeps spinning, that means he is in a dream. If it stops and falls over, that means he is back in reality. The final shot shows the top spinning, but it never reveals whether it falls over.

Inception Top End GIF

Five years after "Inception" was released in theaters and became a box-office smash, this one question still drives fans crazy.

At a recent Q&A at the Tribeca Film Festival, one audience member asked the director to explain what the ending of "Inception" means.

inception top spinning rotationNolan, who looked like he had heard this question just a few too many times, wouldn't explain the ending, but instead explained why he won't comment on it or the endings to any of his films for that matter.

He told a story about when his mind-bender "Memento" premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2000.

"We got a very, very excited reaction to it," Nolan said. "Somebody had asked about my interpretation of the ending and I said 'Well, it's all up to the audience but this is what it means to me,' and I gave them in great detail what exactly the ambiguities of the film meant to me," Nolan said.

The press conference was never recorded, so his "Memento" explanation never got out. However, Jonathan Nolan, Christopher's brother, who wrote the short story on which "Memento" was based, advised him against ever explaining the ending of one of his films again.

MementoAccording to Nolan, his brother told him, "You don't understand, nobody hears that first bit where you say it's really up to the viewers if you then give your interpretation."

"It's the last time I ever opened my mouth," Nolan said.

Christopher Nolan isn't the first filmmaker to be questioned about the ending of something he made years ago. He's in good company with the likes of David Chase, the creator of "The Sopranos," who recently gave an in-depth analysis of the show's ending following nearly 10 years of constant debate and controversy.

the sopranos hboNolan is known for his secrecy, so it is unlikely that we will ever get an explanation like that for "Inception" or his other films.

While he will never offer us a definitive answer (an interview in Wired is the closest he's gotten to giving one), we seem to have his permission to continue arguing over whether or not that top kept spinning.

'Game of Thrones' brings one of the most iconic scenes from the books to life

jon snow season 5 game of thronesWarning: If you are not caught up with "Game of Thrones," there are spoilers ahead.

Season five of "Game of Thrones" charged on this week with its third episode of the season. Amidst the episode's drama of religious extremism, dwarf kidnapping, and torturous betrothals, one scene stood out as the culmination of an entire character's development so far. We're talking, of course, about Jon Snow.

In Sunday's episode, Jon had to demonstrate his ability as the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch when Janos Slynt dismissed his authority and refused to follow an order. Faced with insubordination and the breaking of Slynt's vows, Jon ordered him taken outside and beheaded him.

As straightforward as this moment may have seemed to show watchers, it is guaranteed that fans of the book series' were losing their collective minds. This is, across the board, one of book readers' favorite Jon Snow moments.

Let's break this down to see why.

Jon Snow Season 5Last episode, Jon was elected Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, an honor usually awarded to a wizened ranger or a respected lord. Many brothers of the Night's Watch believe him to be untrustworthy due to his time spent with the wildlings. Others simply view him as an inexperienced boy. Jon's election was unusual, but wholly deserved. He was raised among highborns, and has more education and fighting skills than many of his fellow Night's Watch brothers. Jon helps train the men (and boys), and was able to hold off the wildling army when Castle Black was attacked.

Jon has also never sought out power, which, if fantasy and hero archetypes hold true, means that he is the most worthy of that burden. He is one of the few characters that lands on the good side of the coin more often than not. Jon is loyal and honorable, like the man who raised him: Ned Stark.

So here he is, holding his first formal meeting as the new Lord Commander, and he's trying to do the right thing. Despite his tense history with Ser Aliser Thorne, Jon names him First Ranger - an honor. Then it's Janos' turn - he is given command of Greyguard, a crumbling fortress in need of men and repair. Janos refuses, throwing a blubbering and indignant fit.

Janos SlyntAt this point in the book, chapter seven of "A Dance with Dragons," the quarrel is stretched out a bit.

"He still sees me as a boy, Jon thought, a green boy, to be cowed by angry words. He could only hope that a night's sleep would bring Lord Janos to his senses. The next morning proved that hope was in vain."

The next day in the story, Jon gives Janos one last chance, telling him to pack up his horses and go. Janos laughs off the order, sitting comfortably amongst his comrades, still not taking the Lord Commander seriously. At this point, Jon instructs his stewards to take Janos outside and hang him.

From here, it becomes chaotic.

Janos is pale and shocked, many men get to their feet, unable to believe that the order has been given. Jon is aware of all the brothers surrounding him who have elected him to this position, but also of the many who did not want him as their leader. Stannis stands nearby with his knights, watching.

Janos is brought outside, still protesting and in bragging of his importance and connections. Suddenly, Jon has a change of heart.

This is wrong, Jon thought. "Stop.

Emmett [his steward] turned back, frowning. "My lord?"

"I will not hang him," said Jon. "Bring him here."

"Oh, Seven save us," he heard a man cry out.

That smile that Lord Janos Slynt smiled then had all the sweetness of rancid butter. Until Jon said, "Edd, fetch me a block," an unsheathed Longclaw.

This is it. The moment. The moment when Jon goes from boy to man, from sworn brother of the Night's Watch to Lord Commander. He knows the eyes on him might not respect him, might not believe that he deserves his title. But it's his duty to command and his duty to uphold the rules of the Night's Watch. Jon has shouldered his burden of power, and found that he can carry it. He is the bastard of Winterfell, a Stark at heart. Remember this scene?

ned stark game of thronesNed Stark believed that "he who passes the sentence should swing the sword." Jon knows what he must do, and how he must do it.

Janos Slynt twisted his neck around to stare up at him. "Please, my lord. Mercy. I'll...I'll go, I will, I..."

No, thought Jon. You closed that door. Longclaw descended.

Jon glanced back at Stannis. For an instant their eyes met. Then the king nodded and went back inside his tower.

Not long ago, Jon denied Stannis what he wanted - for Jon to swear fealty to him and rule over Winterfell. These two leaders don't always see eye to eye, but Stannis is a fair and pragmatic man. With this choice, this action, Jon has earned his respect. Stannis gives the nod to end all nods of approval. It's like the ultimate fist-bump of Westeros.

There is also a coincidental link between this scene and Sansa Stark. Janos Slynt was the leader of City Watch in King's Landing before being sent to the Wall. When Joffrey ordered Ned Stark beheaded, Janos was one of the men who grabbed him and held him at the execution block.

janos slynt game of thronesned stark hbo game of thronesIn the chapter of "A Game of Thrones" immediately following Ned's beheading, Sansa is the point-of-view character. She is forced by Joffrey to attend court and sees Janos there. The book text reads:

Sansa stared hard at his ugly face, remembering how he had thrown down her father for Ser Ilyn to behead, wishing she could hurt him, wishing that some hero would throw him down and cut off his head.

Jon, without knowing it, is Sansa's hero.

This scene in Sunday's episode was sandwiched between Sansa's dramatic engagement to Ramsay Bolton and a rather promiscuous brothel raid, but it stands out as one of the most significant moments so far. For book readers, this was a long anticipated moment from "A Dance with Dragons," and boy was the wait worth it.

Sansa and Littlefinger

The biggest shock of Sunday's "Game of Thrones" came from a major turn in a main character's storyline.

Fans of the "Game of Thrones" series watched as Sansa's storyline veered greatly from the books. It's one the largest divergences from from the text so far.

It starts at Moat Cailin, where Theon/Reek looks upon the gruesomely flayed remains of a man and woman hanging from the castle walls. After learning that Ramsay has been skinning northern lords alive to get their families to pay taxes, his father, Roose, teaches him a lesson about political strategy and how fragile their current position is.

With the loss of Tywin Lannister as an ally, they are vulnerable to uprising from the northerners. Roose tells his son that marriage between families, not physical brutality, is the best way to seal alliances. "As it happens, I found the perfect girl to solidify our hold on the North."

The show then cuts to Sansa and Littlefinger. The last known living Stark, Sansa is the rightful heir to Winterfell. She's the perfect person to keep the northerners in line; the daughter of the beloved, late Ned Stark and sister to the former King of the North, Robb.

Sansa StarkFor those of you who aren't familiar, or who don't remember, here's a quick reminder of who Ramsay Bolton is, and why he's the last person Sansa should want to marry.

The Lannisters, you'll remember, teamed up with the Boltons and Freys to massacre Rob Stark and his army in the Red Wedding. They cut off his head, and gruesomely attached his direwolfs head onto his body, parading it around the burning Stark camp. Catelyn Stark's throat was slit, and she was later thrown naked into the river.

game of thrones catherine stark red weddingRamsay Bolton (then using the name Snow) lay siege to Winterfell, killing dozens and capturing Theon. Ramsay then tortured him until he turned him into "Reek," unrecognizable and mentally broken. For sport, Ramsay hunts women with his dogs, and skins men alive in front of their families.

And Sansa thought Joffrey was a piece of work.

Robb Stark's DeathRobb Stark's body after the Red WeddingSo we watch Sansa realize what it means when Littlefinger brings her to Moat Cailin. Naturally, she's horrified at the idea of seeing the Boltons, let alone marrying one. She initially refuses, insisting she’ll starve herself or run away if this is truly her fate. But Littlefinger steps in as a master manipulater, saying that he won't force her but that she should look at this as an opportunity.

"You’ve been a bystander to tragedy since the day they executed your father. Stop being a bystander … There's no justice in the world, not unless we make it. You loved your family, avenge them.”

This speech settles on Sansa, as she looks over Moat Cailin and her future. After hardening her expression into one of resolve, instead of fear, she gets back on her horse and rides towards the castle. Littlefinger watches her trot off, smiling like a proud and creepy uncle.

Sansa Stark Season 5So how exactly did the show writers decide that Sansa hadn't quite had her fill of atrocious fiancés?

In the books, Ramsay is indeed engaged, but it's to a young girl named Jeyne Poole who was forced to pose as "Arya Stark." No one knows where the real Arya is, since she escaped King's Landing after Ned's execution. So the Boltons capture Jeyne, and pretend she is a Stark in order to keep the Northerners from rebelling against their new wardens.

The last time we see Sansa in the books ("A Feast of Crows"), she's with Littlefinger in the Vale, scheming to marry a lord in that territory. There is the implication that Winterfell is in her future, but not through anything close to an alliance with the Boltons. It is assumed the Littlefinger is scheming to usurp the Boltons and take back Winterfell with the help of the lords of the Vale.

It seems as though the showrunners have opted to simplify this plot, and hand over a real Stark girl to the Boltons for political leverage. Meanwhile, Littlefinger is still scheming to undo the Boltons, but it appears as though he’s going to use Sansa in this mission. She has the motivation of vengeance, but what's the endgame? What does this change mean for the future of Sansa, Littlefinger, the Boltons, and Winterfell?

Roose Bolton and Ramsay BoltoyWe know from an interview with the actor who plays Ramsay, Iawn Rheon, that there are some disturbing scenes to come in season five.

“There were some things in this series that I was really disturbed by. Just before the scene I was like, 'I don’t want to do this' but it’s my job so you’ve got to get on with it," Rheon told ITV.

So what horrors are in Sansa’s future? Last December, Turner, who plays Sansa, gave a brief interview at the British Film Award. She was asked what some of her upcoming season five scenes were like, and her response was downright eerie.

“There was one scene which I did do which is super, super traumatic," she said. "It was just really kind of horrible for everyone to be on set and watch.”

Not just super traumatic, but super SUPER traumatic. We can only speculate what that might be, but this voyage into the Boltons’ lair is most likely the cause for the terror to come.

Something big finally happened on 'Mad Men' last night

mad men S7 9Warning: Spoilers Ahead

If you're a fan of "Mad Men," episodes like Sunday night's is why you watch.

Since the show came back from its hiatus to deliver the final seven episodes, there hasn't been much to be excited about.

In the first episode back it was fun to see one of Don Draper’s old flames from season one return in a dream sequence, but since then it has just been a lot of Draper dealing with grief, sleeping around, and little going on at the office.

But now we've finally gotten that shot in the arm we needed to get us excited for the remaining final three episodes of the show.

Sunday's episode had a major development, as Sterling Cooper & Partners got word that it would be absorbed into their subsidiary, McCann Erickson, after learning their office lease was terminated.

Following the initial shock, Draper came up with a plan to keep the company afloat. By moving to their west coast office, with a handful of accounts, the company could prove to the McCann Erickson big wigs that they are still valuable.

mad men s7 3It seemed like one of the gritty, “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” moves we’ve come accustomed to seeing Draper and Roger Sterling pull off to keep their company in business over the seasons.

However, when Draper, Sterling, Ted Chaough, Peter Campbell, and Joan Holloway showed up at McCann Erickson to pitch the idea, McCann Erickson’s executive Jim Hobart told them that they have it all wrong.

They aren't getting thrown aside, but becoming a major part of McCann Erickson.

mad men S7 7As he put it, "You've passed the test."

Hobart apologized for the way things were handled, but that McCann Erickson was now ”rolling out the red carpet" for them.

“You’re getting five of the most coveted jobs in advertising… Travel, adventure, and international presence. You’re dying and going to advertising heaven,” Hobart told them.

mad men S7 82At McCann Erickson, Don, Roger, Ted, Peter, and Joan will be put on blue chip accounts like Buick, Nabisco, and Coca-Cola. (Though Joan admits to Peter after the meeting she’s suspect if a woman will get the same accounts her male counterparts will receive.)

It seems it's finally time for the SC&P brass to start playing with the big boys. And that there’s finally an end in sight for the show.

Our assumption is that the final episodes will look at SC&P being broken down and who will be moving to McCann Erickson and who will decide to go another direction.

Kim Kardashian says reports that some family members don’t support Bruce Jenner are 'made up'

Kim Kardashian is squashing news reports that say some of the Kardashian clan have wavered in their support of her stepfather Bruce Jenner.

“I think there’s still an adjustment and I think family therapy [to be had],” Kim conceded in her first interview on Bruce’s ongoing transition into a woman on Monday’s “Today” show with Matt Lauer.

On Sunday, Hollywood Life reported that eldest sister Kourtney Kardashian’s partner Scott Disick, 31, felt Jenner’s transition is “weird” and decided not to join the family in watching the “20/20” interview. And Kris Jenner, 59, was under fire over the weekend for not having submitted a supportive quote for the special, though two of Bruce's ex-wives did.

Bruce JennerNevertheless, Kim said the entire family is behind Bruce and that the reports are "made up."

“We’re really close. I see reports that this one doesn’t support him and this one’s over here and my mom feels this way. It’s all really so made up,” Kim, 34, said. “We all really support him. Is it a hard adjustment? Yes. Is there things that we have learned more recently? It’s an adjustment on how to deal with it and it’s a daily process.”

During Friday's interview, the 65-year-old Olympian-turned-reality star sat down with Sawyer and confirmed "for all intents and purposes, I am a woman." He said that Kim has been the most supportive family member (with the help of husband Kanye West), while Khloe Kardashian, 30, has had the hardest time adjusting to his transition to a woman.

Over the past year and after divorcing Kris earlier this year, reports of Jenner's transition to a woman reached a fever pitch heading into Friday's interview, including paparazzi photos reportedly capturing him in various women's accoutrements like wearing painted nails, a purported sports bra under his male clothes, and recently in a full dress outside his Malibu home.

ESPN is suing Verizon over 'Custom TV' pricing plans

ESPN BlocksESPN is suing Verizon over new programming packages introduced earlier this month that remove the sports network from basic cable.

ESPN alleges that Verizon violated its contract by placing it in a sports tier, according to documents filed Monday in New York Supreme Court. That contract, called a carriage agreement, prohibits removing either ESPN or ESPN 2 from basic cable, the network claims.

"This is an action for breach of contract and declaratory judgment arising from Defendant’s breach of its obligations to Plaintiff under certain license agreements," ESPN says in the filing.

Custom TV is a new programming package announced last week by Verizon. It works off a base of 35 channels including local affiliates and then places the remaining networks in genres such as sports, news and information, family and so on.

The sports genre is anchored by ESPN and ESPN 2. The sports network wants Verizon to put both channels back on basic cable.

ESPN has two good reasons for wanting to stay on basic cable — ratings and money. It carries a wide array of live sports events, which are expensive to produce, and it charges high carriage fees to pay for those sports. Having ESPN on basic cable puts it in front of the most possible eyes. Putting it in a sports tier would segment the audience and put it in a weaker position to negotiate fees when the current carriage agreement is up.

The network released the following statement regarding the lawsuit.

"ESPN is at the forefront of embracing innovative ways to deliver high-quality content and value to consumers on multiple platforms, but that must be done in compliance with our agreements," the network said in a statement to Business Insider. "We simply ask that Verizon abide by the terms of our contracts.”

Verizon has not replied to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Warner Bros. released the first trailer for the Whitey Bulger biopic "Black Mass," which stars Johnny Depp as the notorious Boston gangster, who is serving two consecutive life sentences in prison.

Depp looks eerily different in the trailer, thanks to contact lenses that make his eyes blue. The movie is directed by Scott Cooper, whose "Crazy Heart" earned Jeff Bridges an Academy Award for best actor in 2010.

We'll have to wait and see if the same outcome is in the cards for Depp. "Black Mass" hits theaters on September 18, 2015.

I saw the 'most dangerous movie ever made' starring 100 untamed lions and it was insane

$

roarAfter the absolute chaos of a film that sets loose over 150 safari animals on the poor cast and crew of “Roar,” one of the lead characters makes a bold claim: “Boy, are they friendly.”

“Roar” is a forgotten 1981 film that follows an enthusiastic zoologist in Africa who turns his land into a sort of safe haven for big cats, protecting them from poachers. Marketed today as a screwball passion project, Drafthouse Films is re-releasing the movie 34 years after it was a financial failure on its initial release.

“Roar” is a family affair with a cast led by director Noel Marshall as the zoologist, and starring his then-wife, "Birds" actress Tippi Hedren, as well as their children. Promotion for the film has been attention-grabbing, highlighting unbelievable behind-the-scenes stories from its tormented 11-year production. As the film’s tagline states: “No animals were harmed in the making of this film. 70 cast and crew members were.”

With so many reported grisly cast and crew injuriessome of which are visible in the movie, I was skeptical that the film could live up to its clever marketing.

To my surprise and satisfaction, it absolutely did.

Before the movie started I asked my friends joining me what they hoped to see in “Roar." I received responses like "blood," "people getting killed," and "people cuddling lions." Miraculously, "Roar" did not disappoint any of my friends, making its PG-rating feel inappropriate, even by today’s standards.

Every character in “Roar” seems to be in a rush, and for good reason. Forget the script, the story takes a backseat, as these actors have more pressing matters at hand. Dialogue is spouted rapidly, and then abruptly cut off by pouncing lions. Bodies flinch in preparation for a sudden attack and steps are taken gingerly to avoid one. The big cats are difficult to read as they shift between being unsurprisingly aggressive and strangely affectionate (even cute).

Roar

Yes, the dialogue is laughable, and the story is goofy. The chase scenes between untamed animals and the cast are, however, filled with tension, as there is a real sense of terror in the eyes of the actors. In other movies, characters are choreographed to run for their lives. In “Roar” people are actually running for their lives.

After the unpredictable 103 minutes ended, I asked my friends for initial reactions and they agreed the movie surpassed their expectations. One of them summed up the movie as follows: “It was basically like they took the cast of ‘The Brady Brunch’, threw them in a house with a 100 lions and attempted to make a film out of it.”

“Roar” is a wholly unique viewing experience, complete with laughter and astonishment. For the amount of time and effort Director Noel Marshall and his family went through, I admire their resilience in bringing “Roar” into existence. It is surreal and oddly compelling to behold such intimate interactions between humans and some of the most feared predators on Earth.

One of the stars of 'Goodfellas' almost quit right before it started filming

Goodfellas Paulie

It's crazy to think that anybody who starred in "Goodfellas" would ever have wanted to quit.

However, that was almost the case for Paul Sorvino, who's performance as mob capo Paul "Paulie" Cicero, is perhaps the best-known of his entire career.

At a 25th anniversary celebration of "Goodfellas" at the Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend, Sorvino explained how he almost quit right before filming started.

"I was quitting after almost four weeks and we were supposed to start three days later and I called my manager and said, 'get me out of this, I can't do it,'" Sorvino said.

It might be surprising that Sorvino was having second thoughts about the role. His character of Paulie Cicero, based on real life mobster Paul Vario, has a lot in common with Sorvino. They are both middle-aged Italian-American men from New York, as Sorvino acknowledged. However, there was more to playing Cicero than just that.

Goodfellas Tribeca"The real difficulty there was the inner life ... that weird bifurcation of character," Sorvino said. "When they're home, they're family people. When they're out, they're shooting people."

While the three main characters in "Goodfellas" (Henry Hill, Jimmy Conway, Tommy DeVito) are portrayed as violent sociopaths, Cicero seems the most cautious of them all. After all, he is the only one who stayed away from drugs and won't do criminal transactions over the phone.

Goodfellas PaulieThe actors in the film had screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi (who wrote the book "Wiseguy" on which the film was based) at their disposal to find out what the mobsters were like in real life. De Niro, who played Jimmy Conway, went so far as to find out how Jimmy the Gent held a ketchup bottle.

GoodfellasSorvino ended up changing his mind after one look in the mirror.

He made an intimidating face and realized that he could play this guy.

"I was going to fix my tie and I saw this guy. And it scared the hell out of me," Sorvino said.

Sorvino might actually be "a poet, an opera singer, a sculptor" and an actor, but he sure made one convincing gangster.

Ellen and Matt

Ellen DeGeneres and Matt Lauer had a special message for those attending and viewing the Daytime Emmys Sunday night.

In a hilarious semi-NSFW video (see here), DeGeneres and Lauer announced they were ending their prank war.

Lauer stripped down, and the two declared that for every time an Emmy winner thanked Lauer in their acceptance speech, Lauer would donate $1,000 to charity.

Lauer

BuzzFeed reports the celebs took note.

Since neither DeGeneres nor Lauer specified whether each celebrity could only thank Matt once, Tyra Banks thanked Lauer twelve times, setting off a trend of stars giving multiple thank you's to Matt Lauer that continued well into the night.

Here's the list of celebrities who thanked Lauer during their speeches:

matt lauer

"Entertainment Tonight" host Nancy O'Dell said his name three times.

"Thank you Matt Lauer, Matt Lauer, Matt Lauer. Is that worth $3,000?" she quipped while taking home the award for Outstanding Entertainment News Program.

"Thank you Matt Lauer. Thank you Matt Lauer, thank you very much indeed," Craig Ferguson said for $4,000. "Thank you, Matt Lauer! Thank you very much."

Charles Osgood, accepting the award for "CBS Sunday Morning," thanked Lauer twice ($2,000), and Daniel Osgood of "The Young and the Restless" thanked Lauer's parents ($1,000).

Tyra Banks thanked Lauer (again!) for $1,000 and Maria Alvarez thanked him on behalf of Telemundo ($1,000).

BuzzFeed reports two of Alvarez' colleagues said thanks as well ($2,000).

"Days of our Lives'" Freddie Smith said it once ($1,000), while presenters Karla Mosely (once), Jacob Young (twice), and Linsey Godfrey (five times) also thanked Lauer profusely for $8,000.

Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen gave a $2,000 thank you to the Today Show host, and she and her "Fab Life" co-stars also thanked Lauer on behalf of Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan ($6,000).

$10,000 for ten thank you's from the entire "Bold and the Beautiful" cast, and $6,000 more from "Bold and the Beautiful" writers.

$1,000 from "Jeopardy!" executive producer, Harry Friedman.

"The Chew" stars Carla Hall and Daphne Oz each thanked Lauer — $2,000 more.

Nancy O'Dell again thanked Lauer (twice) with Kevin Frazier for their "Barefoot Contessa" win. Frazier also thanked Lauer twice — $3,000.

"The Ellen Show" producer Mary Connelly thanked Lauer twice, and "General Hospital's" Anthony Geary thanked Lauer once.

Rounding out the thanks was "Days of our Lives'" Melody Thomas Scott with one Lauer shout out, bringing the grand total to $69,000.

Neither Lauer nor DeGeneres mentioned what charity the money would go to, but Lauer is encouraging his colleague to get in on the fun:

There are no adequate words. Today I find myself attempting to pick up the pieces of my heart that have broken into such tiny shards, I'll likely never find them all. Today I, and so many of my loved ones, lost an incredible friend. Dan Fredinburg was one-of-a-kind. Fearless. Funny. A dancing robot who liked to ride dinosaurs and chase the sun and envision a better future for the world. His brain knew how to build it. His heart was constantly evolving to push himself to make it so. He was one of my favorite human beings on Earth. He was one of the great loves of my life. He was one of my truest friends. He was an incredible brother, a brilliant engineer, and a damn good man.

I'm devastated and simultaneously so deeply grateful to have known and loved him, and to have counted him as one of my tribe. I was so looking forward to our planned download of "all the things" when he got home. I am crushed that I will never hear that story. I am crushed knowing that there are over 1,000 people in Nepal suffering this exact feeling, knowing that they too will never hear another tale about an adventure lived from someone that they love. Disasters like this are often unquantifiable, the enormity is too much to understand. Please remember that each person who is now gone was someone's Dan. Please remember that our time on this Earth is not guaranteed. Please tell those you love that you do. Right now. This very minute. And please send a kiss to the sky for my friend Dan. This year's 'Call of Duty' pits human soldiers against futuristic robots

"Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" is the latest video game in the "Call of Duty" franchise, and it arrives later this year on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game features beautiful graphics, futuristic weapons, and (expectedly) violent gameplay.

While most of the combat appears to be between humans and robots, a surprise at the end of the trailer promises a more supernatural foe. Given past appearances by folks like Kevin Spacey, maybe "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" is priming audiences for an Alf cameo? We can only dream.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" launches on November 6, 2015.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is months away, but it's one of the most-anticipated movies of the year.

The biggest question is just how much money "Star Wars: Episode VII" will make when the film debuts worldwide this December.

In a recent note to clients, analysts at Citi predict the worldwide box-office estimate for "Episode VII" at $1.75 billion.

That doesn't sound unreasonable given the worldwide appeal of the film. The latest teaser trailer was viewed 88 million times in 24 hours.

The return of the original cast members is an added draw, giving older generations a reason to return to a galaxy far, far away along with newer, younger viewers who will discover the franchise for the first time.

Previously, Credit Suisse's Michael Senno predicted the film may hit $1.2 billion globally.

Other analysts have pegged it at hitting $2 billion.

On the high end, Entertainment Weekly predicts "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will go on to be the highest-grossing movie ever with ticket sales of over $3 billion globally.

The highest-grossing films ever are 2009's "Avatar" ($2.7 billion) and 1997's "Titanic" ($2.2 billion).

The latest "Star Wars" film, 2005's "Revenge of the Sith" grossed $848 million worldwide. That film did not see the return of original cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is in theaters December 18, 2015.

Him or her? Kim Kardashian explains how to refer to Bruce Jenner as he transitions to a woman

Kim Kardashian Bruce Jenner Transition today

Don't feel bad if you support Bruce Jenner and his transgender journey but are still confused on how to refer to his gender. His own family consulted with gay organizations, including media watchdog group GLAAD, for the appropriate way to refer to their father.

Kim Kardashian spoke for the first time on her stepfather's transition to a woman on Monday's "Today" show and conceded that the family is definitely a work in progress.

“We all really support him. Is it a hard adjustment? Yes. Are there things that we have learned more recently? Yes. It’s an adjustment on how to deal with it and it’s a daily process,” she told the NBC morning show's co-host Matt Lauer.

Over the past year, and after divorcing Kardashian "momager" Kris Jenner earlier this year, reports of Jenner's transition to a woman reached a fever pitch. On Friday, Bruce spoke publicly about his gender struggles for the first time.

Bruce JennerIn the interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer, the 65-year-old Olympian-turned-reality star confirmed that "for all intents and purposes, I am a woman."

After Bruce told Kim about his transition just a few months ago, she said that the family sought advice from gay organizations.

"Even just the discussion [can be difficult]," she confessed. "We have been talking to people from the GLAAD organization, just different organizations on just what do we call him. Do we say him or her? How do we be respectful? There are so many different things that you just want to be supportive and you just want to be respectful. I think everything takes time."

So what is the correct way to refer to Bruce?

"Until that transition is done, we've learned that you do refer to him as 'him,'" Kim revealed.

It's your last chance to play one of 2014's best games before it's gone forever

pt silent hills

If you own a PlayStation 4, today is the day to download the amazing (and free!) game "P.T."

What is "P.T."? That requires some explanation.

The highly-anticipated horror game "Silent Hills" was officially canceled on Monday. "P.T." – the "playable teaser" for "Silent Hills" – is still available to download, despite the cancellation. It's free for all PlayStation 4 owners.

"P.T." will be able to download and play until April 29. After that, it will be impossible to download the game from the PlayStation Network. That's just two days away!

Konami, the Japanese publisher behind the "Silent Hill" franchise, provided the following statement to Business Insider:

P.T. is being removed from the PSN store because it was created as a playable teaser for 'Silent Hills,' and the distribution period and license usage within the demo have both now expired.

I called "P.T." the best game experience from 2014. Though it was a small-scale game, it was extremely focused: The game asked players to explore a single hallway in a house to find a way out.

pt silent hills

The game is psychologically unnerving and brimming with ambiance: Creaking wood, crackling radio, and eerie, otherworldly noises that sound human and inhuman all at once. And the game had hyper-realistic visuals, too, thanks to the powerful graphics engine built by Kojima Productions. Here, look at it in action:

The game also required a surprising level of collaboration: You can't even beat the final puzzle of "P.T." unless you know several different languages. "P.T." required crowdsourcing to decipher all the clues and get out of that endlessly-looping hallway.

If you haven't downloaded it yet, boot up the PlayStation Store on your PlayStation 4 and download "P.T." If you already own it, it won't be deleted from your console on Wednesday — and if you don't want to download it yet, we recommend you add it to your library so you can download it at any point in the future, in case you change your mind. Did we mention that it's free!?

Martin Scorsese wasn't allowed back in an Italian restaurant after 'Goodfellas' came out

AP32815591051At the 25th anniversary celebration of "Goodfellas" that closed out the Tribeca Film Festival, the timeless classic received exactly the kind of response one would expect.

The audience cheered every time a major character first popped up on screen. You could hear other people shouting famous lines ("go home and get your f---ing shinebox!") out as well.

But apparently, not everybody was as enamored with "Goodfellas" at the beginning.

Director Martin Scorsese says that audiences hated what they first saw.

"I remember the previews were one of the worst experiences of my life — we had three of them and they were all in California," Scorsese told the crowd in a pre-taped video

"Goodfellas" is a violent, profanity-laced film that also breaks a lot of conventional cinematic storytelling rules. Perhaps viewers weren't ready for that.

"It seemed that the audience had to be prepared for what it was, but there was a lot of controversy," said Scorsese.

The controversy he refers to is the portrayal of Italian-Americans in the film as gangsters. Apparently, this angered the owner of an Italian restaurant Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi (author of "Wiseguy," of which the film is based) used to frequent.

"When the film came out, the owner of the restaurant said we're not allowed in anymore because we apparently denigrated a certain ethnic group for the picture ..." Scorsese said.

Joe Pesci Goodfellas

Scorsese himself is Italian-American and grew up in New York's Little Italy. He has dealt with Italian-American identity in several of his other films, including "Mean Streets" and "Raging Bull."

Scorsese isn't the first Italian-American director to receive blowback for portraying the mob on film.

"The Sopranos," created by David Chase, was sued by an Italian-American group for portraying Italians as "born criminals."

The SopranosMeanwhile, the Italian-American Civil Rights League (run by notorious mobster Joseph Colombo) successfully lobbied to prevent "The Godfather," directed by Francis Ford Coppola, from using the word "mafia."

While this controversy never circulated to that level ("Goodfellas" also has Irish and Jewish-Americans as major characters), "Goodfellas" at least showed that Scorsese was aware of prejudice against Italians.

The below is slightly NSFW for language.

Jon Stewart is shocked Oklahoma finally accepted scientific evidence that fracking causes earthquakes

Jon Stewart Oklahoma fracking

Human activity isn't just warming the planet. We're also causing earthquakes, and have been for decades.

Scientific evidence points to fracking as the cause of dramatically more frequent earthquakes in Oklahoma and other high fracking areas of the US, including Texas.

The state is having an average of 2.5 earthquakes of at least magnitude 3 every day, when it used to average only 1.5 a year.

It isn't the fracking that actually causes the earthquakes, but the disposal of the wastewater created during the process. Fracking companies pump this dirty water into the earth in a place with deep underground faults, so it doesn't return to the surface. The theory is that this activity on the fault line lubricates Earth's plates where they rub against each other, allowing them to move more freely, causing more frequent earthquakes.

While these quakes aren't happening at the exact time that companies are pumping liquid into faults, researchers have been studying the link between the two and are fairly certain they are connected.

"The picture is very clear" that this water can cause faults to move, USGS geophysicist William Ellsworth told the AP.

"The real earthquake"

Fracking is big business for Oklahoma — somewhere between 15% and 20% of all jobs in Oklahoma are related to fracking according to Energy Wire and Bloomberg. Perhaps, then, it doesn't come as a surprise that state officials have only recently admitted the connection between fracking and the state's increased seismic activity.

It also shouldn't surprise that Jon Stewart goes to town with this juxtaposition of science and special interests on The Daily Show.

After laying out the data about Oklahoma's earthquakes using recent news reports, Stewart shows a clip of Oklahoma's governor, Mary Fallin, questioning whether the increase in earthquakes is man-made or natural.

Stewart paraphrases her: "Is it, as common sense might suggest, the seemingly obvious connection to fracking, or is the Lord using our great state as a shake weight?"

As well as common sense, scientific evidence suggests the former. In a surprise move, the state of Oklahoma has at last gotten on board and accepted the evidence, according to the next news clip played on the Daily Show.

"That right there is the real earthquake," Stewart quipped in mock astonishment.

Jon Stewart Oklahoma fracking

Now what?

Despite that admission that oil and gas drilling operations are causing earthquakes, the Oklahoma House of Representatives turned right around and approved a bill to prevent cities and towns from regulating those oil and natural gas drilling operations, the next clip on the show reports.

Jon Stewart is all incredulous scorn at that decision.

"You finally admit that fracking has turned your state into one giant Brookstone massage chair, and your first response is to ensure that no one can ever stop it," he says to the state of Oklahoma. "Why?"

A news clip of University of Washington seismologist John Vidale answers. Vidale says current practice is the cheapest option, "and it works well, except for the earthquakes and the contamination of groundwater."

Not negligible exclusions, Jon Stewart seems to think.

Hollywood really thinks we need a 'Robin Hood' movie

$

Robin Hood Kevin Costner

It's not uncommon for multiple movie studios to have similar, rival projects get made around the same time. "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact," which were both about an asteroid hitting earth, came out in 1998. Two TrumanCapote biopics came out within a year of each other.

However, when it comes to Robin Hood, the tale of the thieving outlaw can't spin out enough stories for Hollywood.

Currently, there are six Robin Hood films in development and another television series.

Warner Brothers recently announced it's developing a Robin Hood movie. In the same week, FreemantleMedia North America acquired the rights to the book series "The Outlaw Chronicles," which it plans to turn into a TV series.

The amount of Robin Hood films planned seems odd, given that the last Robin Hood movie, simply titled "Robin Hood" was a critically-panned box-office dud back when it came out in 2010. It was a dark, gritty reboot starring Russell Crowe, and was made not long after "Batman Begins" started a trend of darker, grittier blockbusters. Needless to say, "Robin Hood" did not become the franchise Universal was probably hoping it would be.

Other adaptations of the character haven't gone over well either.

According to Deadline, BBC America co-produced a "Robin Hood" series in 2006, which ran for three seasons. Meanwhile, a planned CW show called "Sherwood" about a female Robin Hood never made it to the air (the last ever news reports on it are from back in December 2012).

This isn't the first time Hollywood has put out competing Robin Hood films. In 1991 Kevin Costner starred in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" ($390.5 million) while Uma Thurman was featured in 20th Century Fox's "Robin Hood."

Here is a look at the seven upcoming Robin Hood projects:

1. Warner Bros.' Robin Hood

Warners Brothers just announced it was working on its own "Robin Hood" film. So far, details are scarce. It is produced by one of the producers of "The Lego Movie" but as far as we know, this is not Lego Robin Hood.

2. Liongate's "Robin Hood: Origins"

Lionsgate landed this reboot that promises to be dark and gritty. It sounds almost identical to the version made in 2010, and we all know how that worked out. Either the second time is the charm, or this could go the way of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

3. Disney's "Nottingham & Hood"

Rather than a re-imagining, Disney is taking a "revisionist" tone with "Nottingham & Hood." They hope to start up a family friendly franchise, and the speculative screenplay apparently has a "Pirates of the Caribbean" tone. This isn't Disney's first try with this story: in 1973, they made the animated classic that starred a cartoon fox as Robin Hood.

4. Sony's "Hood"

Sony is planning a shared universe around Sherwood Forest as well, which they compare to "Fast and Furious" and "Mission: Impossible" franchises.

5. "Robin Hood and the Prince of Aragon"

"Robin Hood and the Prince of Aragon" is described only as a "vibrant pop-punk retelling." The rest of the details are shrouded in mystery, but a description like that is definetly an interesting way to get attention.

6. "Robin Hood 2058"

Like "Prince of Aragon," "Robin Hood 2058" offers a compelling yet mysterious promise: this one will bring Robin Hood into the future for a sci-fi adventure. The script was penned by Jason Hall, who previously wrote "American Sniper," which grossed $541.2 million worldwide.

7. "Outlaw Chronicles"

It was also recently announced that Robin Hood will now be making his way over to television as well. This one is adapted from a book series called "The Outlaw Chronicles," which is a re-imagined take on the legend. It seems like every one of these takes is a "re-imagining" of sorts.

What it's like to play the best game of 2014, which is about to disappear forever in 2 days

$
0
0

Last August, a free downloadable game called “P.T.” showed up on the PlayStation Store — and the horror genre has never been the same.

Unfortunately, unless you already own the game, you'll only have until April 29 to download "P.T."

Game publisher Konami announced it has cancelled development on "Silent Hills," and thus, its "playable teaser" ("P.T.") will be removed from the PSN Store. Konami tells Business Insider "the distribution period and license usage within the demo have both now expired."

If you own a PlayStation 4 and haven't played "P.T." yet, you should.

"P.T." is one of the simplest, most effective, and masterfully-created horror games ever released.

pt 1The game thrusts you into an empty room with a door. Once you open it, you are presented with a simple but eerie and photorealistic L-shaped hallway. There’s a bathroom, a clock, a radio, and a phone. There are also torn up pieces of a photo lying around.

As you pick up clues from the environment, you learn that you’re walking through a house where a man lost his mind and killed his wife and children.

Every time you leave the hallway through the basement door, you end up back in the same hallway. It’s your job to figure out the puzzle and escape the loop.

pt 3

The demo, which I’ve played more than twice now, is a true terror. And that’s because it’s consistently unsettling, rather than flat-out scary.

Granted, there are one or two memorable “jump scares,” which have inspired countless YouTube reaction videos. But the true appeal to “P.T.” lies in the ambiance: chandeliers slowly sway back and forth, there’s incessant creaking, and occasionally, a baby cries, a woman moans, and a radio announcer offers chilling details about the house in which you’re standing. On a few occasions, he’ll tell you to look behind you. It’s extremely unnerving.

Once you reach the end of the “playable teaser” — this isn’t a spoiler, so don’t worry — you learn that the game is actually a long interactive trailer for “Silent Hills," the now-cancelled game that promised a marriage between horror master Hideo Kojima and monster movie maker Guillermo del Toro, the director behind “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Hellboy.”

Though "Silent Hills" is no longer happening, “P.T.” is a cult classic. Some of the puzzles are just flat-out brilliant — one of them has you collecting clues in different languages, so you need to translate them all and then put the phrases in the correct order to figure out what to do next. And it's so effective because there's no exposition, and no introduction to familiarize yourself with the characters or the situation. You must learn as you go along.

silent_hills_pt_screen_20140821_05

One half of the team that successfully deciphered the difficult-to-solve final puzzle in “P.T.," a YouTuber named "Voidburger," says not knowing the plot “makes you really think about what’s going on by obscuring the big picture and providing only little breadcrumbs to follow."

"It heightens curiosity, which goes hand-in-hand with horror, in my opinion… It’s beneficial to keep the audience confused, because it amplifies their fear. And nothing destroys fear like knowledge, so it makes sense to keep the facts few and far between in the horror genre, and make the player work for their plot fix."

mULGGEJ

“P.T.” is a true example of how simplicity and withholding information can create a truly memorable experience that feeds on your imagination. It's a shame we'll never get to see the collaboration between Kojima and Del Toro, but "P.T." is a reminder that you don't need a feature-length game to create an unforgettable experience.

A New York City taxi tycoon threw his kid an epic bar mitzvah with a private Nicki Minaj concert

A New York taxi cab medallion mogul threw his son an epic bar mitzvah party this weekend complete with a private Nicki Minaj performance.

The lucky kid's name is Matt Murstein.

Matt's father is Andrew Murstein is the founder, president, and largest shareholder of Medallion Financial Corp. — a publicly traded company with a about $259 million market cap. Andrew Murstein is the co-owner of NASCAR team Richard Petty Motorsports and the majority owner of professional lacrosse team New York Lizards.

Matt is a big Nicki Minaj fan, sources said.

During the private show, Minaj performed seven songs, including the clean version of "Super Bass."

After, the rap superstar did a meet-and-greet. She took photos with almost all of the 150 kids in attendance, the sources said.

She also gave the kids words of encouragement.

"Get an education. Stay in school. And don't be a slouch or a bum. And ladies, never let a man have to take care of you. Do you understand me? Be your own woman. Be your own person. Do you understand me?"

It's unclear how much it cost to book Minaj. Last year, Priceonomics published a list of booking price estimates and placed Minaj in the $200,000 to $300,000 category.

Matt's big night had a nice takeaway message. We're told that the theme was basketball and staying in school and getting your degree.

Sources said that Matt is a star player for his Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team. We're told that the 13-year-old is 6 feet tall.

Naturally, Matt also had a traditional bar mitzvah video. That was a blowout too. The video montage for the event was a play on LeBron James' TV special "The Decision," and it was hosted by Bob Costas.

In the video, Costas and Matt sat in arm chairs in a gym much like LeBron did. Costas asked Matt if he was going to go pro and enter the NBA draft or stay in school. The video also featured celebrity appearances including Patrick Ewing saying how he and team owner Michael Jordan want him to play for the Charlotte Hornets and John Starks asking him to come play for the Knicks. At the end of the video, Matt decides to stay in school, sources said.

The party, which was held at The Pierre Hotel in Manhattan's Upper East Side, looked like a blast. The event had many major athletes and celebrities in attendance, including Hank Aaron and his wife Billye; former NY Knick John Starks; and pro lacrosse star Paul Rabil. Other prominent figures in attendance, included former US Senator and Governor Lowell Weicker; current NY Governor Andrew Cuomo; and Universal Records President Monte Lipman, sources said.
