5 reasons you should be excited about the 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' director

rian johnson

Thursday, brought a lot of news for "Star Wars" fans.

The title of the first spinoff, "Rogue One," was announced along with the release date for "Star Wars: Episode VIII" (May 26, 2017).

The news brought the likely excitement from the franchise’s loyal fanbase, but let's take a second to delve into who Rian Johnson is, the director who will be taking the reigns of the original franchise after J.J. Abrams’ “Episode VII: The Force Awakens" is released in December.

If you don’t live and breath all things The Force, you probably didn't know that just under nine months ago news broke that Johnson would not only write and direct “Episode VIII” but“Episode IX” as well.

While Johnson has been quiet about the whole thing, yesterday’s announcement proved that at least half of that news was correct.

And Johnson had some fun with it on Twitter:

Soon after though, he finally fessed up:

Most fans were excited when J.J. Abrams announced he'd be directing “Episode VII,” as it confirmed that Disney was serious about bringing new voices into the "Star Wars" universe, once completely controlled by its creator George Lucas.

But the news of Johnson jumping in following Abrams brought universal acceptance.

Here's five reasons why you should be too.

1. His debut feature was incredible

Johnson, 41, was born in Maryland but grew up in San Clemente, California and it would be that area and his love of Dashiell Hammett detective stories that would bring to life his feature length debut, “Brick.”

brickMade for only $500,000 and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Johnson combined film noir, drugs, and the drama of high school life to create a fantastically fresh genre movie within the modern-day teen world. Gordon-Levitt gets all gumshoe and shakes things up through the different cliques of a San Clemente high school as he tries to uncover the death of his ex-girlfriend.

2. The visuals in his films are striking

Though immediately grabbing is the dialogue is completely 1930s hardboiled detective slang, the film also showed that Johnson has a unique visual eye as "Brick" is full of beautiful imagery.

brick_water2

brick_jgl2

brick_car2The film would garner Johnson instant acclaim and a “Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision” at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

3. He knows how to work with big-name talent.

Three years later, Johnson worked on a large-budgeted con movie titled “The Brothers Bloom.” The film starred Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody as brothers who specialize in running scams on millionaires. Up for one final job, Rachel Weisz plays the mark, but the brothers soon realize she’s got her own agenda.

brothers bloomWhile it received mixed reviews by critics, the film did prove that Johnson could work with name actors, take on multiple lush locations, and pull off action sequences.

4. He's directed two of the most memorable "Breaking Bad" episodes

In 2010, Johnson once more elevated his notoriety in the industry when he began directing episodes of “Breaking Bad.” He directed three total including the polarizing “Fly” episode and the third-to-last episode of the show, “Ozymandias,” which some consider the best episode of the whole series, including series creator Vice Gilligan.

breakingbad3Once more his visual techniques shined, especially in “Fly,” which takes place mostly in Walter and Jesse’s underground meth lab in season three and includes the POV of a fly trapped in the lab.

5. The fanboys already love him

In 2012, Johnson’s cred in the sci-fi world shot through the roof with the release of “Looper.”

Messing with our heads thanks to an elaborate time travel story, we follow Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), an assassin known as a looper, who offs people at the whim of his mob bosses from the future. But when he realizes they have sent back his future self (Bruce Willis) to kill, things get complicated.

looper2With “Looper,” Johnson elevated to world building, creating a "Blade Runner"-like future.

looper_finalThe visuals, as we’ve become accustomed to in his films, are beautiful and he uses more CGI than in the past.

looperHere, he also began working with make-up, specifically getting Gordon-Levitt to look more like a young Willis.

willis_finaljgl_finalHe likely didn't think this at the time, but the film has elements that proves he's capable of taking on "Star Wars."

With this body of work, we are pretty excited with what he’ll be bringing to “Star Wars.” We don’t know what “Episode VIII” is about yet, but we’ll keep you posted once production begins.

The film will be released May 26, 2017.

'Chappie' is a mess, but its director keeps failing upward

Chappie Neill Blomkamp movie still Sony Columbia pictures

"Chappie" has an identity crisis.

The film tells a story better fit for PG-rated family fare, and then covers it in enough ugliness to garner a R-rating. In one scene, it's trying to make you laugh, the next it's trying to make you cry, and by the end, it aims to stun with excessive gore. Unfortunately, these elements don't add up to a cohesive or enjoyable movie.

"Chappie" features familiar faces in Hugh Jackman and "Slumdog Millionaire" star Dev Patel, but the movie, oddly enough, belongs to people named Ninja and Yolandi, better known (to some) as South African rap group Die Antwoord. While they are near-impossible to take seriously, however, even they are not the main reason why the movie doesn't work.

The real problem is that we've seen it all before. "Chappie" feels like Blomkamp put "E.T.", "Short Circuit," "Transcendence," and "Robocop" in a blender and then covered it with "AI: Artificial Intelligence." There's not an original bone in the film's body, and it plays like a mash-up of all the better sci-fi that came before it, but with way more repeated Die Antwoord tunes.

The film's visual style is exactly what you'd expect if you're familiar with Blomkamp's oeuvre — incredible, seamless effects set against a desolate South African backdrop. It was interesting in "District 9" but feels boring and stale by now. As Doug Benson joked on the latest episode of "Doug Loves Movies" in reference to Blomkamp's singular vision, "At least Woody Allen went to other boroughs."

chappie ninja"Chappie" is more strange than it is anything else. Are Ninja and Yolandi playing themselves, as evidenced by the plethora of Die Antwoord merchandise strewn about the film? If they are playing themselves, why does nobody recognize them as popular rap stars? Die Antwoord definitely exists in the world of the film, as Ninja and Yolandi are literally wearing hoodies promoting themselves the entire time. It's a confusing marketing move that has no business being in a feature film.

Another thing that made me laugh was how Hugh Jackman inexplicably carries a rugby ball throughout the entire film. Every scene he can be seen holding, squeezing, maybe even tossing his precious rugby ball, and it never comes into play in a big way as one might expect. It's just bizarre.

Ultimately, it's unclear who "Chappie" is for. Its sense of humor and inclusion of pop culture figures suggests that it's for younger teens, but the film's R-rating ensures that they can't even buy a ticket. It's too silly to intrigue die-hard, adult sci-fi fans, and too "out there" for children.

Neill Blomkamp seems to be failing upward in Hollywood, depending on who you ask. Blomkamp's debut feature "District 9" was a massive success — earning $115 million domestically on a tight $30 million budget and a Best Picture nomination at the 2010 Oscars. His follow-up sci-fi actioner "Elysium" starring Matt Damon underperformed in the states, earning just $93 million on a $115 budget.

Critics were fairly kind to "Elysium" at the time, but even Blomkamp himself considers the film a failure, as he told Uproxx:

"The thing that bothers me is if I feel like I f----- it up… I feel like, ultimately, the story is not the right story. I still think the satirical idea of a ring, filled with rich people, hovering above the impoverished Earth, is an awesome idea. I love it so much, I almost want to go back and do it correctly. But I just think the script wasn’t… I just didn’t make a good enough film is ultimately what it is."

Despite this, Blomkamp got to make "Chappie" for $49 million, and it's looking like the film won't even make that back domestically after its tepid $13 million opening weekendIn short, the director has yet to prove himself with a bigger budget, and meanwhile he has said in interviews that he isn't even sure he should be a film director.

And yet he continues to thrive and is about to get his biggest project yet. Back in January, Blomkamp posted concept art for an "Alien" movie that the studio "didn't even know he was working on" on Instagram. The images went viral, and "Alien" fans seemed excited by his vision.

Oh shit

A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp) on Jan 1, 2015 at 6:06pm PST

A month later, Blomkamp took to Instagram to announce that his "Alien" movie is officially happening. This momentum could have been utilized by Sony to better market "Chappie," but instead, Blomkamp's "Alien" became the only story that mattered and "Chappie" fell by the wayside before it was even released.

Um... So I think it's officially my next film. #alien

Could "Alien" be Blomkamp's first big budget success, or will it just continue the streak of bigger and bigger failures?

WINNING 'BACHELOR' COUPLES: Where are they now?

the bachelor chris soulesIt's hard to believe, but "The Bachelor" has now been on the air for more than a decade.

ABC's hit reality series just wrapped up its 19th season earlier this week when Iowa farmer Chris Soules asked fertility nurse Whitney Bischoff to be his wife.

When "The Bachelor" launched in 2002 it was a hot watercooler discussion, critiqued for putting personal relationships so openly into the public eye and for allowing one man to date multiple women at once to find his "one true love."

Despite that, the show has become one of ABC's best-performing shows producing multiple spinoffs like "The Bachelorette" and "Bachelor Pad," and serving as fodder for other network series.

After 19 seasons, what has become of the many bachelors?

Shocker: The majority aren't with the winner they fell in love with over the course of a short few months.

While Soules and Bischoff are still together, the series' track record for successful relationships is six for 28 across every season of the two "Bachelor" shows.

Season 1: Management consultant Alex Michel picked Amanda Marsh, but didn't propose. Instead, the two dated for a nearly a year before Marsh broke up with him after reportedly learning he was keeping in touch with runner-up Trista Rehn.

(Source: EW)

Michel later became a spokesperson for Match.com and produced and starred in YouTube video, "Our Very First Sex Tape."

Trista was then featured on the first season of spinoff "The Bachelorette" and married firefighter Ryan Sutter.

Listen to the mash-up that proves Robin Thicke and Pharrell copied a Marvin Gaye song to make 'Blurred Lines'

Robin Thicke BET Awards 2013

On Tuesday, a jury ruled that singers Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke copied parts of Marvin Gaye's hit 1977 song "Got to Give It Up" to create "Blurred Lines," and it awarded $7.3 million to Gaye's family.

While the singers denied copying the late Gaye's music, Gaye's children sued Thicke and Williams, saying the duo's song infringed the copyright of their father's song.

As part of the Gayes' case, they submitted an audio mash-up intended to serve as "concrete musical illustrations of the substantial similarities" between "Blurred Lines" and "Got to Give it Up."

On Monday, during a nearly week-long testimony, The Hollywood Reporter explained of the mash-up tape:

To that end, they have produced for the judge's ears a mash-up — quite possibly the first time ever in a courtroom that a mash-up has been exploited to prove copyright infringement. In the recording, the vocal material of "Blurred Lines" plays over the instrumental of "Got to Give It Up," and vice versa. "This material sounds like a perfect, natural match because it blends sonically," says the summary judgment memorandum.

If that's not enough, the Gayes have two expert musicologists describing eight substantial similarities: "(1) the signature phrase in the main vocal melodies; (2) the hooks; (3) the hooks with backup vocals; (4) the core theme in 'Blurred Lines' and backup hook in 'Got to Give it Up'; (5) the backup hooks; (6) the bass melodies; (7) the keyboard parts; and (8) the unusual percussion choices."

Thanks to YouTube, you can listen to a few mash-ups of the two songs and judge for yourself below:

Here's another mash-up:

Here's the "Blurred Lines" music video:

See how it compares to "Got To Give It Up":

"Blurred Lines" earned more than $5 million apiece for Thicke and Williams. Though both are credited as its songwriters, Williams wrote the song in about an hour in 2012, and the pair recorded it in one night.

There's a bidding war for 'Seinfeld' streaming rights and it could top $90 million

The entire "Seinfeld" series may soon be available to watch online.

Seinfeld elaine gif
According to the Wall Street JournalSony Pictures TV is in the process of shopping the show rights to digital buyers, including Hulu, Amazon, and Yahoo. The deal is expected to be done in the next few weeks.

WSJ noted on Friday: "The deal could fetch a price well north of half a million dollars per episode. There are 180 Seinfeld episodes."

That could put "Seinfeld" streaming earnings over $90 million, on top of the already reported $3.1 billion in TV syndication revenue the show has earned since 1995.

Seinfeld kramer gif
While Netflix acquired "Friends" last year from Warner Bros. for more than $500,000 per-episode, a source told WSJ that Netflix is "taking a pass" on "Seinfeld."

The exact price of the "Seinfeld" deal will depend, in part, on the length of the deal.

According to WSJ: "The 'Friends' agreement with Netflix runs for four years, which may be too short for some of the 'Seinfeld' bidders. One suitor said a price tag higher than 'Friends' doesn’t make sense if the contract is for less than ten years."

Not that "Seinfeld" creators Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David are hurting.

Larry David Jerry SeinfeldIn 2013, Seinfeld was named Forbes' highest-earning comedian for the third year in a row thanks to syndication royalties of the show and an estimated $27 million from more than 70 stand-up tour dates that year alone. Seinfeld's net worth is estimated at around $800 million.

Larry David, the co-creator and executive producer of "Seinfeld," recently discussed his wealth on "60 Minutes."

Post-the "Seinfeld" syndication deal, David's net worth was around $900 million.

When David and his wife of 14 years divorced in 2007, his fortune (no matter what it was exactly) was halved, thanks to California divorce laws. Today, the TV creator-comedian-actor's net worth is reported to be about $400 million. On "60 Minutes," Charlie Rose said David's net worth is closer to $500 million.

Larry David Laurie David

But David vehemently disputed rumors of his net worth to Rose during the segment.

In a clip available only on the CBS website, David insists "the figures that I read about the amount of money that I've made are so ridiculous, and it's absurd. It's unseemly, I don't have that kind of money!"

"My wife took half of it in the divorce," David confirmed.

When Rose asked if that was because he is generous, David responded, "No, that's the law."

Rose then asked if he would have preferred to have given her less, to which he replied: "Perhaps, who knows. No, after what I put her through I want her to be happy. It's not an easy job to be with me. I don't think of other people."

Getting back to his net worth, David says he finds the reports of his finances "embarrassing."

While he says "I honestly don't know" how much "Seinfeld" has earned in syndication, David admits, "I have a lot of money" but still says "the figures out there are crazy."

Rose tried to press David on an exact amount, telling his interview subject that he was worth "more than $500 million."

"Are you talking about me personally? Are you kidding me? Again, that's just nuts," replied David. "No, it's not [$500M]. And mind your own goddamn business."

This isn't the first time David has publicly denied his alleged net worth.

In 2011, he told Rolling Stone:

I don’t have anything near what I’m reputed to have. My wife got half of it, the whole thing is ridiculous, and yet people are obsessed with the fact that I’ve made millions of dollars from syndication.

It's okay for all these other people you've interviewed to have it, but not me? Jerry's not getting asked about how much money he has. Only I am. It comes down to, 'Jerry deserves it, he starred in it, you got lucky!'… It doesn't suit me, that's why, it's uncharacteristic for a person with my personality to have it, that's what's askew, right? Something's off, and I agree with you. I shouldn't! It's an anomaly!

David said that as he grew richer he developed an allergy to caviar, which "was the perfect metaphor for my life."

Celebrity Net Worth notes of David's massive fortune:

The real windfall came when Seinfeld was sold in to syndication to Columbia Tristar. The day Seinfeld was sold into syndication Larry earned an estimated $650 million. Add to that his prior personal fortune of $30 million plus all the money he has earned since starring in Curb and Larry is a very happy man. Another great annuity for David has been the periodic releases of Seinfeld DVD box sets. Every few years a new season is unleashed to a frenzied public with a huge marketing blitz. DVD sales can easily add another $40-50 million to Larry's bottom line.

But Bieber took it all in stride.

Justin Bieber monkeyThe 21-year-old took the stage at the end of the night and joked: "What do you get when you give a teenager $200 million? A bunch of has-beens calling you a lesbian for two hours."

And then, in a serious turn, Bieber apologized for his past behavior.

Acknowledging he "turned a lot of people off" over the years, Bieber explained, "There was no preparing me for this life. I got thrown into this at 12 years old… I lost some of my best qualities. Things I’ve done that don’t define who I am. I look forward to being someone you're proud of. Someone close to me once said how you rise from a fall is how you are truly defined as a man."

Bieber concluded his speech by saying, "You have my word, I will not end up broken, pathetic, bitter, or sitting on someone else’s roast. I’m at a moment of change. This is a new day."

King Bach is now Vine's most popular celebrity and he has big plans for Hollywood

Andrew Bachelor, better known as "King Bach," has 11.3 million followers on Vine and is now the social video platform's most popular user, a distinction he won after toppling previous king, Nash Grier earlier this week.

If you haven't heard of "Bach," as his friends call him, ask anyone under the age of 22 with a smartphone.

The theatrically trained actor has skyrocketed to fame thanks a hilarious stream of six second clips, and now has ambitious plans to conquer mainstream Hollywood, Kurt Wagner at ReCode reports.

Unlike some fellow Viners, Bachelor's short videos don't rely on scaring strangers or dangerous pranks. He spends enormous time writing, directing, editing and producing each Vine and he is careful to cross post his work to other social networks. His YouTube channel boasts over 600,000 subscribers and Bachelor claims to rake in around eight million views per video. His Vine videos have netted a total of over 3 billion loops.

Bachelor's enormous virality and hard work, so far, seems to have paid off. He has won recurring roles on three mainstream TV series including Mindy Kaling’s "The Mindy Project" and Nick Cannon’s "Wild ‘N’ Out" this year, and will soon play himself in Zac Efron’s upcoming movie "We Are Your Friends."

On top of his TV gigs and public appearances, Bachelor is also juggling five movie projects in different stages of pre- and post-production.

"Bach was chasing a Hollywood dream long before he joined Vine in 2013," Wagner writes, "but he wasn’t having much luck. He still auditions for roles, he said, but now people have heard of him when he walks in the door."

2017 is going to be an absolutely huge year for Disney

star wars the force awakens sithDisney's 2017 lineup just became even bigger.

Thursday, at the company's annual shareholder meeting, CEO Bob Iger announced "Star Wars: Episode VIII" will be released May 26, 2017.

The addition of "Star Wars" to the summer schedule is huge. It gives the Mouse House two big releases for the month of May. A followup to "Guardians of the Galaxy" is set to debut at the top of the month.

May will be the start of a huge summer 2017 for Disney, one which should definitely be envied by other studios.

In February, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures announced a huge partnership that will allow Spider-Man to appear in future Marvel movies. The deal included a new Spider-Man movie that will hit theaters July 28, 2017.

amazing spider manWith Spidey and "Star Wars" in the summer lineup, Disney's 2017 has the possibility of becoming one the studio's biggest years — if not the best — at the box office.

That's saying something because 2015 is expected to be a huge one for Disney, which owns Marvel.

The studio will release two of this year's most anticipated films: "The Avengers" sequel "The Avengers: Age of Ultron," and "Star Wars: Episode VII."

The first "Avengers" film grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide. "Star Wars" on its own has the potential of becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. Analysts have predicted the sequel could hit $2 billion at theaters worldwide. The Guardian made a case that "Episode VII" could be the first $3 billion film. (For reference, 2009's "Avatar" made $2.7 billion worldwide.)

So how is 2017 shaping up?

The addition of Spider-Man gives Walt Disney Studios three Marvel movies in theaters that year. In general, the Mouse House puts out two per year.

Disney, which owns Lucasfilm, Pixar, and Marvel Studios under its umbrella of movie-making vehicles, will also put out a long-awaited "Toy Story" sequel. A fifth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film with Johnny Depp is also expected.

Here's a look at Disney's big movies for 2017 so far:

Another Pixar movie, currently untitled, may be released in November.

The Street's Chris Katje predicts three of those, "Toy Story 4," "Spider-Man," and "Star Wars," will be at least $1 billion movies.

"Toy Story 3" grossed over $1 billion at theaters in 2010. Another "Pirates" film has a good chance of cracking $1 billion also. The fourth film made $963.4 million.

toy story that time forgotThe "Spider-Man" estimate may be a bit high considering the two most recent films featuring the hero each failed to crack $800 million at the box office. (The highest-grossing "Spider-Man" movie is 2007's critically panned "Spider-Man 3," with $890 million.)

With five Spider-Man movies between 2002 and 2014, it is unclear how receptive people will be to a third Spider-Man reboot in such a small time period.

However, fans are pretty excited for Spidey's triumphant return to Marvel. After the announcement was made, Marvel became a trending topic on Twitter, with the hashtag #WelcomeHomeSpiderman becoming a favorite on the social media site.

If anyone is able to bring the webslinger back to the big screen, it's Disney's well-oiled Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One thing’s for sure, Disney's lineup is going to be incredibly tough for other studios to compete with. If it all pans out, the company could have four billion-dollar movies come 2017.

Here's how Danny DeVito saved 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' from getting canceled

its always sunny in philadelphia cast

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is in the midst of its 10th season, making it one of the longest-running live-action comedy shows in television history.

But the show's success may not have happened if not for a strange bit of luck brought upon by its network, FX.

Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day are the creators, writers, actors, and producers of the show, but they weren't big enough names to draw in audiences when they were starting out in 2006.

McElhenney and Howerton recently joined The Nerdist podcast and explained that after a first season with low ratings, FX gave them an ultimatum: Add a star name to bring in audiences or the show is over.

McElhenney recalled the conversation:

So, John Landgraf, who's the president of FX, he called me in for a meeting and was like, 'Hey, no one's watching the show, but we love it, we wanna keep it on, but we don't have any money for marketing, and we need to add somebody with some panache that we can hopefully parlay into some public relations story, just so we can get people talking.'

On the podcast, McElhenney went on to say he, Howerton, and Day were hesitant to add a big name and change the way they were writing and making the show. He says FX threw around some names, including Danny DeVito.

Danny Devito

"It's not that we were reticent to the idea of adding Danny to the show," Howerton recalled, "it's that we were reticent to add a name to the show. You know, because we kinda liked that we were no-names and it was this weird, small thing, you know."

McElhenney says they told FX: "No, I just don't think we wanna do that, and they were like, 'Oh OK, well, you know ... the show's over.'"

McElhenney, Howerton, and Day then opened up to the idea and talked to DeVito, who apparently already knew about the show because his kids watched it.

Howerton says DeVito was perfect for the role because he had played so many "despicable characters" but had a warmth underneath that seemed to fit the show's tone.

DeVito joined the show for the second season, playing Frank Reynolds, the legal father of twins Dennis and Sweet Dee.

In 2014, Entertainment Weekly ranked "It's Always Sunny" No. 7 on its list of the "26 Best Cult TV Shows Ever," noting, "It's a great underdog story ... If it sounds too dark for you, consider that there's an episode about making mittens for kittens, and it's adorable."

Six ways that Tina Fey's new show 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' is just like '30 Rock'

tina fey ellie kemper

"30 Rock" fans rejoiced when it was announced Tina Fey and Robert Carlock would reunite on new comedy, "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

Since "Kimmy Schmidt" just hit Netflix on March 6, it's too early to tell whether the show can live up to the success of "30 Rock," which ran for seven seasons and won the Emmy for best comedy series three years in a row. But after just one season, "Kimmy Schmidt" already stands on its own, thanks to its A-list cameosquirky humor, and a catchy theme song.

But hardcore "30 Rock" fans may have spotted a joke or two that echoed moments from Fey's other great sitcom.

Here are six of the most obvious "30 Rock" references in season one of "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

1. The Jokes

Even if the dialogue sometimes comes off like improv, "Kimmy Schmidt" is very tightly scripted. Like "30 Rock" before it, there's plenty of quirky one-liners.

From "30 Rock":

And from "Kimmy Schmidt":

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Carol Kane

Kimmy Schmidt Kiernan Shipka

2. The Music

Mixed with the New York scenery, the show's jazzy score might give you some serious "30 Rock" flashbacks. It was also composed by Fey's husband Jeff Richmond, who also directed several episodes of "Kimmy Schmidt."

3. Language Misinterpretation

The comedically correct term for this would be "double-talk," something Fey seems to relish in. There are a lot of characters here who get Spanish wrong the same way Jack Donaghy's French sounded more like gibberish and Liz Lemon didn't remember as much German as she thought she did.

"Kimmy Schmidt" had a lot of fun with a cast of characters who could not understand a word of Spanish:

4. "Can I Watch You Eat That?"

In one "Kimmy" episode, the stress of Jacqueline Voorhees' (Jane Krakowski) divorce makes her want to eat her feelings but without the calories, so she asks Kimmy to eat a burger in front of her.

Jane Krakowski Kimmy Schmidt

Jane Krakowski Kimmy Schmidt 2

She must have picked up that behavior from Jack Donaghy, who liked to watch people eat red meat in front of him while he was recovering from a heart attack early in season two of "30 Rock."

Jack Donaghy 30 Rock

5. Bad Doctors

One of the funniest recurring characters in "30 Rock" history is Dr. Spaceman (Chris Parnell), who is the go-to physician at "The Girlie Show," despite his blatant incompetence. He once claimed that "medicine is not a science."

Dr. Spaceman

Meanwhile, "Kimmy Schmidt" introduces us to Dr. Franff, an unattractive plastic surgeon, played perfectly by Martin Short.

Martin Short Kimmy Schmidt 2

6. Werewolves

One of the best cutaway jokes in "30 Rock" involved a song performed by Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) called "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah" (fun fact: Donald Glover wrote the song):

Jenna Maroney also played a werewolf during her days on "Night Court":

In "Kimmy Schmidt," lead character Titus finally gets his big acting break playing what else but a singing werewolf waiter.

Tom CruiseOn Friday, HBO's explosive new documentary on Scientology, "Going Clear," opened theatrically in limited release. The film will premiere on HBO on March 29.

The Alex Gibney-directed documentary is based on author Lawrence Wright's controversial book "Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, & the Prison of Belief," which grew out of a New Yorker profile on former Scientologist, director Paul Haggis.

In the doc, Gibney takes aim at Scientology's most high profile members, like Tom Cruise and John Travolta, and addresses why the actors would have such a hard time leaving the religion.

But Cruise and Travolta aren't the only celebrity Scientologists.

From "Mad Men" stars to "Orange Is The New Black" actors, see who else is part of the controversial religion.

With additional reporting by Ashley Lutz.

Actress Kirstie Alley

The former "Cheers" star says the religion helped her overcome a cocaine addiction.

"I think that probably all religions sound bizarre to the people who are not the practitioners of them," Alley says of Scientology. "To me it's so normal, and probably 90% of the crazy stuff I hear isn't true. I've been a Scientologist for over 30 years. I think a lot of things are sensationalized."

In 2010, rumors swirled her weight loss program, Organic Liaison, was a front for Scientology, a claim the actress vehemently denied

Actor Danny Masterson

Masterson is best-known for his role on "That '70's Show." He defended Tom Cruise for the actor's leaked Scientology video back in 2008.

In an interview with Paper Magazine in 2009 he explained the religion as follows:

"The definition of Scientology is 'the study of knowledge,'" said Masterson. "Obviously, the more knowledge you have in a given field, such as life, the more confident you are as a person."

Actress Bijou Phillips

Indie actress Bijou Phillips, most recently known for her role on "Raising Hope," is daughter of the "Mamas and Papas" singer John Phillips.

Bijou is married to Danny Masterson and the two frequently go to Scientology events together.

'Cinderella' has a huge $70 million opening weekend

Disney's live-action adaptations of its fairy tales continue to be box-office gold.

"Cinderella" debuted to a huge $70.1 million at theaters opening weekend.

It wasn't the highest-grossing opening for a Disney movie in March. (That title belongs to "Alice in Wonderland" and "Oz the Great and Powerful.")

Still, the opening for "Cinderella" is the sixth-best March opening weekend.

The film is playing immensely well overseas, too.

"Cinderella" has already made over $132 million worldwide.

However, it's not clear how much of the weekend's gross should be attributed to kid's eagerness to see one of Disney's most-beloved princesses on the big screen.

Other than Helena Bonham-Carter and Cate Blanchett, there were no big name draws.

Cinderella is played by Lily James, best known for "Wrath of the Titans" and "Downton Abbey," two roles most young children would not be familiar with. Richard Madden, from HBO's "Game of Thrones," plays the prince.

Instead, an exclusive "Frozen" short only playing ahead of "Cinderella" showings may very well be one factor that helped draw in the crowds.

You may not be hearing the name "Dolce & Gabbana" on the red carpet anytime soon.

Fusion reports fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were quoted in an interview saying: "The only family is the traditional one. No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow; there are things that should not be changed."

The statement appeared in the Italian magazine Panorama.

It soon caught the attention of folks on social media everywhere, including Elton John, who took to Instagram on Sunday to comment.

Soon the hashtag #boycotdolceandgabbana started spreading on Twitter. John, who has two sons with husband David Furnish, this caption with a photo on Instagram:

How dare you refer to my beautiful children as "synthetic". And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF — a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana

It was reported in 2006 that Gabbana spoke against same-sex marriage, though Dolce and Gabbana, both gay, were formerly linked romantically until their split several years ago.

In 2013, The Telegraph asked the duo whether they had considered marrying each other, to which they both responded"What?! Never! I don't believe in gay marriage."

Why this popular superhero comic took over 10 years to get made into a show

Powers Legends comic

Before “Iron Man,” Guardians of the Galaxy,” and comic movie franchises ruled the box office, Sony Pictures had big plans to turn a different Marvel franchise into a hit.

The studio set their eyes on adapting a graphic novel, "Powers," a police procedural that takes place in a world where having superpowers is the norm.

The series comes from Brian Michael Bendis, who started Marvel's popular "Ultimate Spider-Man" comic in 2000, and follows Christian Walker, a former superhero who has since become a detective while grappling with the fallout of losing his own powers.

Production for the series goes back to 2001, when it was optioned for the big screen. That never happened.

Eight years later, in 2009, FX ordered a pilot for "Powers." Michael Dinner ("Justified") was set to direct. The show was cast with Jason Patric, Lucy Punch, Carly Foulkes (who went on to become the T-Mobile girl), and Bailee Madison in lead roles.

In 2011, Bendis announced that FX greenlit the project.

However, it never went through either. A premiere episode for the series was filmed, but in November 2011, Deadline reported the series was undergoing reshoots and "retooling."

FX ordered more scripts in 2012 for the series, but it never went anywhere. The network's president John Landgraf told reporters at a Television Critics Association's press tour "Powers" was "as difficult an adaptation as I've ever worked on."

Now, three years later, the series has found new life on Sony's PlayStation Network as the platform's first original series. Sharlto Copley ("District 9"),  Michelle Forbes ("True Blood") star as leads on the dark, gritty adaptation.

What changed?

Ultimately, it took a new medium and a fresh approach in the adaptation's premiere episode to help get "Powers" off the ground.

How "Powers" ended up on Sony's PlayStation Network

sharlto copley powersSony’s PlayStation Network has been searching for the right original series to produce for a number of years.

“At that point and time we were starting to see original content on other services and in general, just kind of culturally start to pop,” Sony PlayStation's vice president of marketing John Koller told Business Insider.

This was around the time when shows like “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black” were rising in popularity.

“We said, ‘There’s something here. We know our gamers don’t just game 24 hours a day. They game and they watch shows as well. And they do other things in life,” Koller continued. “The two primary shows that they watched at that point and time were ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Walking Dead.’”

The company’s sister division Sony Pictures came to PlayStation with a number of scripts including one for “Powers” back in 2012.

“We all agreed that we needed to have content that was relevant and timely for the gaming audience, and so [Sony] Pictures came to us with a number scripts. We tested a handful of them with gamers primarily … and ‘Powers’ was the clear winner.”

With the series going nowhere at FX, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to breathe new life into "Powers" on a new medium.

powers playstation"When they [Sony Pictures] heard that we were interested after they presented it, they doubled down and were able to extract it from another group, bring it over to us, and production started," said Koller.

Casting for "Powers" was announced in summer 2014 for the series with Copley, Forbes, Susan Heyward, and Adam Godley ("Breaking Bad") announced.

Novelist Charlie Huston came onto the series as an executive producer and showrunner after becoming involved with the series during its second-to-last iteration over at FX.

"They wanted to write some additional scripts if they were going to move forward after they had shot their pilot," Huston told Business Insider. "I was one of the freelancers hired to do that."

Getting the series right

You could say the major reason "Powers" never went anywhere was because of the premiere episode. They all stuck strictly to the comics.

Fans of the "Powers" graphic novel know the first six issues revolve around the death of a popular superheroine, Retro Girl, and bringing her killer to justice.

powers issue 1So the beginning of PlayStation's "Powers" series may come as a huge surprise. It takes a huge departure from the comics. Retro Girl's alive and well. In her place, a different hero is killed off at the series' start.

"All the previous approaches that I know of, they all killed her," Huston tells Business Insider. "Some of the previous approaches they killed her in the pilot, and solved the murder in the pilot. Some of the previous approaches killed her in the end of the pilot, and then they planned to solve it over the course of the first season. But they all killed her."

"That’s where my head was at coming into it because it’s that thing where your brain gets caught in, ‘It’s canon.’ You’re familiar with the story, and you think, ‘Well, that’s how it’s got to be," Huston continued.

"But, as we kind of plowed our way through it, and I thought more about it, there were a couple of things:

One was, that, in the comic book, you only get to know Retro Girl after she died. Brian [Michael Bendis] and Michael [Avon Oeming] have said themselves that they didn’t expect the series to go more than five or six issues. So, they wanted to do everything all at once out the gate, because they didn’t think it was going to last. So, they wanted to kill the biggest hero in their world right away, and have that be the first case.

But that necessitated them killing a character that the readers didn’t have a chance to get introduced to and more familiarized with and care about. That had to happen retroactively. So, when I was looking at it, I was like, ‘Well, you know ... we’re introducing a great character. People would like to know this character’

And then, once we started really developing her and getting invested in it, it started to become a matter of, ‘Why kill her at all?’ 'Why introduce her at the beginning of the pilot and kill her at the end of the pilot?' 'Why introduce her in the pilot and kill her in episode four?' This is a great character."

And so Forbes ("The Killing," "True Blood") was cast as Retro Girl.powers michelle forbes retro girl"It became important to me. I felt that the immortal, eternally youthful version of the character in the comic book was, for me, less relatable, and less useful for telling a certain kind of story about the burdens of celebrity and the burdens of power of her time," said Huston. "I thought that would be more interesting if we had an actress who’s actually been around and lived a life, as opposed to a 25-year-old who would have had a much harder time bringing that kind of gravitas to the world and who visually would be telling that story to the audience."

Why it took so long to get this show made

powers sharlto copleyIt's taken about 15 years since "Powers" inception as a graphic novel to be adapted into a series.

From the outside, it sounds like a series that got stuck in development hell. Huston doesn't see it that way.

"To me, it’s less a story of development hell, and less a story of why can’t this get done, and more an indication of how compelling the book is and how everybody understood there’s something really strong and important here ... something worth pursuing and worth sticking with no matter what the obstacles have been," said Huston. "Brian and I have both said, there’s not necessarily a person or approach that really cracked this for us."

powers playstation series los angeles premiereHuston doesn't credit the change in the pilot episode alone in helping "Powers" to finally make its way to screen. He says the ubiquity of comic book characters today help an enormous amount in knowing this is the right time to release the series which takes an alternate look at superhero lives.

"To a large extent, what happened was, popular culture caught up with the book," says Huston.

"Superheroes became such a dominate force in the popular culture that all of this basic superhero 101 that a general audience needs to have for you to be able to riff on what a superhero is, and play games with the idea of what it would be like to live in that world as opposed to just telling stories that are really focused on the superheroes themselves," he added. " To be able to tell those stories, you need an audience that matured a bit in the genre and now we have it. So, as much as anything, it may just be the project needed ten years for the popular culture to catch up with how cool it is."

Dreeps is a game that plays itself so you don't have to

Dreeps

Role-playing games can be a lot of fun, but they're notorious for taking a long time to finish.

The creators of Dreeps, a new game that showed up on Product Hunt, want to change that, and their solution is a role-playing game set to cruise control, with the game playing itself so you don't have to.

Because of its hands-off nature, Dreeps is being advertised as an "alarm-playing game," as the only real input required on your end is setting an alarm every day for the main character, simply called "robot boy," to wake up and continue on his adventure.

After waking robot boy by turning off your alarm, he sets off on his journey and continues to explore the charming cyberpunk landscapes, battling enemies and talking to characters along the way. He even continues if you put your phone to sleep, but by the end of the day he'll be low on health, and that's where you come in: someone has to decide when robot boy sleeps and regains his health.

Dreeps

Dreeps

The best way to think about Dreeps is as a Tamagotchi with an alarm, since the idea is for players to just check in on robot boy's adventure from time to time. The game's creators encourage players to formulate their own stories and to "use their imagination to understand the story and the universe as there’s almost no text in the game."

If one of the sci-fi scenes or enemy encounters catches your eye as you're checking in on robot boy, Dreeps does allow you to take screenshots and share them on social media websites, but that's basically it.

Dreeps

"The screenshot upload feature will give the possibility to discuss about the game with friends on social networks," Dreep's creators write on the official website. "The particular point of this app is to let the user enjoy gazing at the various landscapes and visuals and listen to the chiptune soundtrack."

There's no doubt that Dreeps is one of the most bizarre games we've seen in a while. Most gamers won't like the idea of "missing" the action that can happen when your phone is put to sleep or you're not watching. But for RPG fans that are too busy to devote more than just a glance down at their phone every once in a while, Dreeps might just be exactly what they're looking for.

You can download Dreeps for $2.99 over at the App Store, or see what the game looks like in action in the launch trailer below.

10 lessons you can learn from the Avengers characters that will help you land your next job

$

avengers age of ultronLanding a job is no easy feat.

"Sometimes it feels as if you need superhuman qualities to even get your resume past the spam folder of a hiring manager's inbox, let alone get ahead once your foot's in the door," says Alisha Grauso, editor-in-chief of Moviepilot.com.

Luckily, she says, there is a group of people to whom you can look for advice: The Avengers.

"No, really. There are lessons to be found in any comic book story that can be applied to real life, and Avengers are no different," Grauso explains. "You think you've faced some tough career situations? Try facing down an army of invading Chitauri while Manhattan is being destroyed."

In honor of the upcoming release of Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Grauso shares 10 lessons you can learn from the Avengers characters that may help you land your next job:

1. Never lie about your work history.

It can be tempting to lie on your resume about your education or work history, but resist, she advises.

"Sooner or later, the truth will come out, especially if you have some shadier spots in your work history," Grauso says. "As Black Widow learns the hard way, lying about your past can come back to bite you in the spandex. Some of the other characters have had a hard time trusting her because she's lied so much in the past — so she's had to work hard to regain the trust of some of the Avengers, namely Captain America."

So just be open and honest about yourself, and disclose anything about your situation or history that might become an issue later, Grauso suggests. "You never know when some power-crazed, manipulative coworker will come along and try to use it against you for his or her own gain."

2. Always show you're a team player.

"No man or woman is an island, even if he or she has superpowers and can physically throw a car across a busy street," she says. "At some point in a job, you're going to have to work with others to complete a project or tackle a particularly challenging problem. Being independent and able to self-direct is a great skill to have, but remember that there are always others around you who bring a different set of skills to the table — skills you'll need."

Maybe it's a strong business sense; maybe it's an eye for design; or maybe it's the ability to rapid fire half a dozen exploding arrows while kick-flipping off a skyscraper, she jokes. "The point is, showing a potential employer that you play well with others is not only helpful, but necessary."

3. Communication is key.

Your coworkers will always have different ideas, motivations, and communication styles than you do — so it's imperative that you take the time to actively listen to the other members of your team when they speak up with their ideas or objections, she explains. "Don't just steamroll them. The Avengers showed us what happens when everyone refuses to compromise and no one listens: everyone starts arguing, nothing gets done, and then Bruce Banner flips out and destroys the Helicarrier. And you don't want to pay for a new Helicarrier — trust me."

Sephora is selling an inappropriately named lipstick that has people disgusted

Kat Von D

It's a beauty trend that's stuck around for awhile — giving lipstick and nail polish hues wacky, memorable names. Look at any Essie nail polish collection and you'll be greeted with names like "ignite the night" and "spun in luxe."

But reality TV star Kat Von D, whose extremely popular makeup line is sold in Sephora, gave one of her lipsticks a name that's memorable for all the wrong reasons and has sparked a growing social media backlash.

It's called "Underage Red."

The shade, which launched about a year ago in Sephora stores, has a name that suggests its wearers are either very young girls trying to look sexy, or women of legal age who are trying to look like very young girls. If nothing else, the brand name seems to suggest looking like a 16-year-old pinup doll is something to aspire to.kat von d studded kiss lipstick underage red 0 10 oz

Von D is a tattoo artist and musician who got her big break on TLC's reality show "Miami Ink," which then spun off into her own series, "LA Ink." She has written books and has her own clothing line.

But her makeup is apparently the most successful of all of her business ventures, even though Sephora had once dropped the Kat Von D brand from its lineup in 2012 after shoppers had issues with a different lipstick named "Celebutard."

"People with disabilities are the last to benefit from what some might call 'political correctness,' and what I would call basic human decency," Kim Stagliano wrote for HuffPost Style blog about the lipstick. "Retard is still bandied about."

At the time, Sephora provided a statement to People Magazine regarding the "Celebutard" lipstick:

"It has come to our attention that the name of one shade of a lipstick we carry has caused offense to some of our clients and others. We are deeply sorry for that, and we have ceased sale of that shade both in our stores and online," the statement said.

Von D's response on Twitter was flippant: "At the end of the day, it’s just a f—— lipstick,” she sent out. People reported she then deleted the tweet.

It is unclear how much time passed between Sephora dropping the reality star's brand and picking it back up again, but the beauty store's website suggests it now sells the gamut of Kat Von D products.

Now, with "Underage Red," Sephora and Von D may have a similar problem on their hands. One Twitter user accused the brand of promoting statutory rape. She also has another color named "Lolita."

In fact, like Kat Von D herself, her lipstick names all have a particular, branded edge to them, but nothing is as blatant or brazen as "Underage Red." Business Insider reached out to representatives for Kat Von D and Sephora on Monday. As of this writing we have not received a response.

Kat Von D's makeup line isn't the only one using this terminology. Popular makeup brand MAC also has a shade of gloss called Underage. They also have one called "Kinky."

However, Kat Von D's "Underage" lipstick has generated some angry reactions online. This is what some people on Twitter are saying about the color.

The verdict?

Fans loved it.

Fans say the film is a great send-off for Walker's character.

Some say it's so good that it may be the best in the franchise yet.

Don't plan on seeing many spoilers for the film. Producer Neal Moritz, who was also in attendance, asked fans to not share the fate of Walker's character on screen, according to MTV.

“We obviously lost a dear friend, brother, comrade when we were making this movie,” said Moritz speaking of Walker. “He was really the best guy I ever met in my world — in my life. When we decided we were going to continue this movie, we were determined to honor his legacy and our love for him forever. I just want to ask one big favor of everybody. You guys are going to get to see the movie tonight without knowing what happens to Paul’s storyline.
