Critics shredded Kanye West's fashion show, and he is freaking out about it

kanye westKanye West held his first fashion show with Adidas during New York Fashion Week and its critical reception was not great.

Everyone who is anyone has weighed in on the line.

The Washington Post said, while it was his best effort so far, he "didn’t dazzle the eye."

The Daily Beast said "he's not there just yet."

Refinery29 called it "meh."

An Uber driver called it "a bit frumpy."

That criticism was echoed by legendary fashion icon and creator of New York Fashion Week Fern Mallis.

“I’m kind of over Kanye,” she told the New York Post.“I mean, I’m not a fan of his music, and the attitude and the agenda is not my style.”

In true Kanye style, however, he did not take that criticism in stride

He defended himself, his collection, and his vision on Twitter in a nine-tweet tweetstorm:

He also discussed his hardships and his difficulties entering the design world because he was "too famous."

He then reminds Mallis that he will persevere through her criticism and he "will win."

His last tweet was an olive branch to Mallis, asking her to have a drink so they could talk in person.

This isn't the first time Kanye has spoken out about his much-maligned fashion show. In an interview with Style.com, Kanye apologized for the hour-long wait and admitted that he's "a human being."

"I've got opinions, I'm not always right, I'm not always on time, I don't always say things in the proper way, but my intentions are always extremely pure," he told Style. "My purpose is extremely just."

Take a look at Kanye's Adidas collection for yourself in the pictures below.

In the new trailer, former Scientologists reveal what makes the religion so appealing: "They sell it all in the beginning as something quite logical," an anonymous man says. A different voice adds: "You take on a matrix of thought that is not your own."

Here's six other crazy things we learn about the religion in the new documentary.

"Going Clear" premieres on HBO on March 29 at 8pm. Watch the trailer below:

A community of gamers is rallying around an 11-year-old who was victimized by a troll that hijacked his controller and deleted his data

destiny moon guardianA community of gamers is rallying around an 11-year-old who was victimized by an online player that hijacked his controller and deleted his data.

Bungie, the creator of one of the biggest video games of last year in “Destiny,” shared a video in a Thursday blog post that showed an 11-year-old player getting taken advantage of by another online gamer.

In the video, which is posted below, the 11-year-old “Destiny” player had one of his friends invite two gamers into his group, one of which offered the boy a secret “glitch” to help his low level character achieve a higher level more quickly.

The boy took the player, “KirmitTHEfrog,” up on his offer, ceding complete control of his game through Sony’s Share Play service, which lets you give your friend the controls to a PlayStation 4 game you’re playing, say, if you’re having a tough time beating a particular boss you know your friend can handle.

Soon after the boy hands over the controls to KirmitTHEfrog, which happens at the 12:57 spot, the player exits the game and starts deleting data.

KirmitTHEfrog managed to delete two characters the boy had created, and started dismantling all of the gear on the remaining character until the boy returned to his screen, realized what was happening, and shut off his system.destiny troll

The boy isn’t aware two of his three characters are deleted until the very end of the video — but he does confront KirmitTHEfrog beforehand, thanking him for dismantling his hard-earned gear.

Now, the greater “Destiny” community is demanding action — they want Bungie to ban KirmitTHEfrog from "Destiny", take all his gear and give it to the kid, or at least give the boy a gift of some kind, since there’s no way to restore that lost data.

Bungie says it “has some ideas for how we can make regrettable deletions like these less permanent,” but it has not offered a specific course of action, as of Friday afternoon. The community of gamers that have watched this video and heard about this story are stepping up in the meantime, though, offering consolation and even friendship in case he wants help rebuilding his characters.

The bottom line here: Even though the victim here is only 11 years old, this serves as a valuable reminder to always be careful about who you trust on the internet. Check out the video below.

Netflix held an event for its new show "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" on Thursday evening at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York City.

The Tina Fey comedy was originally set to debut at NBC before heading over to Netflix in November.

We attended the event premiering the first two episodes of the series and were welcomed by a room full of monitors playing ads for new and returning Netflix series including "Daredevil" and "House of Cards." IPads on tables streamed episodes of "Friends" and the Netflix original series "BoJack Horseman."

Couches were covered with Netflix pillows, and artwork from series favorites adorned the walls.

The coolest part of the shindig were the drinks.

Five beverages had names drawn from the worlds of the Netflix series "Grace and Frankie," "Orange is the New Black," "Bloodline," "House of Cards," and "Bojack Horseman."

Here's the full list:

Gin and Frankie (for "Grace and "Frankie")

The Slammer (for "Orange is the New Black")
Pueblo Viejo Blanco tequila, cranberry juice, fresh orange juice, lime juice

The Bitter Bloodline (for "Bloodline")
Gordon's gin, campari, sweet vermouth, served with an orange twist

The Underwood (for "House of Cards")
Evan Williams whiskey, dash of angostura bitters, sugar cube

Bojack & Coke ("Bojack Horseman")
Jack Daniels whiskey, coke, served with a maraschino cherry

Our drink of choice? We went straight for coming series "Bloodline," better known as a Negroni. campariBut if this was an event for "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," where was her drink?

She had a table full of popcorn and candy that included Twizzlers, Snickers, Twix, and M&Ms. (It will make more sense after watching the first episode of the series when it premieres March 6.)

JOB OF THE WEEK: Director of Product Management, Trulia

'Shark Tank' investor Kevin O'Leary says this emotional pitch is the reason the show won an Emmy

farmer lede tree t-pee

In six seasons of "Shark Tank," Kevin O'Leary has seen hundreds of presentations from entrepreneurs. One from season five, however, stands out as the most emotional, and he even credits the pitch as the reason why the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Structured Reality Program in 2014.

Johnny Georges of Arcadia, Florida, presented the Tree T-PEE, a water conservation device for farmers that he developed with his late father in 1984.

The Sharks were both shocked and moved by Georges' genuine desire to selflessly help other farmers with their livelihood, a mission he credits to his father.

Ultimately, guest investor John Paul DeJoria — the billionaire cofounder of John Paul Mitchell Systems and Patrón Tequila — decided that Georges was too good to pass up, and they made a deal. Before leaving the Tank, Georges explained the influence his father had on his life, and the tears started flowing for everyone in the room.

Here's a breakdown of the pitch.

Johnny Georges worked for his father Rick in the citrus and irrigation industries for over 20 years. In 1984, Georges and his dad developed a plastic, semi-conical device to place around tree roots to block frost and conserve water, and thus energy.

Georges asks for $150,000 in return for 20% of his company. His main goal for the company is to promote water conservation.

In 2009, the University of Florida discovered that trees with T-PEEs used 93% "less water, fertilizer, electricity, and fuel," Foodtank reports.

When the 87th Academy Awards air on Sunday, you’ll tune in to watch presenters tear open 24 little envelopes to deliver the night’s trophies.

While we only get to see the outside of a golden envelope, presenters get to see much more than just a winner's name.

The envelope and inside nominee card were simply cream up until five years ago when the Academy hired Marc Friedland, CEO of Couture Communications, to liven up the stationery.

Since then, the winner's names are housed inside a golden envelope.

We've previously spoken with Friedland to find out more about the creation of the envelopes.

Three sets of 24 envelopes and 121 nominee cards have been made for this year’s Academy Awards.

Last year, four sets were made since it wasn't known first lady Michelle Obama would open the best picture envelope.

Here's how we'll see the envelope Oscar night.

Watch Eddie Murphy do the Bill Cosby impression he refused to do on 'SNL'

Eddie Murphy SNL

Earlier this week, comedian Norm MacDonald tweeted a great behind-the-scenes story about Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary special and how Eddie Murphy refused to play Bill Cosby.

MacDonald explained how Murphy turned down the opportunity for big laughs in a "Jeopardy" sketch during Sunday's special:

Eddie Murphy does a perfect Cosby impression...

It's my job to talk him in to doing Jeopardy. We talk in his dressing room a good hour. When it's over, I'm convinced he'll do it. He doesn't. He knew the laughs would bring the house down. Eddie Murphy knows what will work on SNL better than any one. Eddie decides the laughs are not worth it. He will not kick a man when he is down. Eddie Murphy, I realize, is not like the rest of us. Eddie does not need the laughs. Eddie Murphy is the coolest, a rockstar even in a room with actual rockstars.

Instead, current SNL cast member Kenan Thompson played the embattled 77-year-old actor in a video daily double that was "taped" six months before the actor was plagued by allegations of rape and sexual assault.

Kenam Thompson Bill Cosby SNLBill Cosby responded on Thursday, telling NBC News: "I am very appreciative of Eddie and I applaud his actions."

But before Cosby was thanking Eddie Murphy, he was reprimanding him back in the '80s when Murphy was just a young comic.

In the below clip from his 1987 standup special "Eddie Murphy: Raw," Murphy tells the story of how Cosby called to tell him to curb his cursing.

I'm a big fan of Billy Cosby. Never met the man but he called me up about a year ago and chastised me on the phone about being too dirty on the stage. It was real weird because I had never met him and he just thought he should call me up, because he was Bill, and tell me that that isn't what comedy is all about. I sat and listened to this man chastise me, and when Bill Cosby chastises you, you forget you're grown, you feel like one of the Cosby kids and s---t."

In his most Cosby-like voice, Murphy imitates the older comic, saying: "I would liiiike to talk to youuuu about some of the things that you do in the show."

Murphy proceeds to tell the story of their phone call while imitating Cosby. Watch the funny bit below, now more relevant than ever:

Tina Fey Oscar red carpet

On Sunday, millions of people will be watching as celebrities descend upon Hollywood Boulevard to walk the red carpet before heading into the Dolby Theater for the 87th annual Academy Awards.

We stopped by the Dolby Theater to get a better look at what exactly it takes to prepare for the most-watched red carpet event of the year.

While workmen are quickly trying to transform Los Angeles' Hollywood Boulevard into a red carpet area, the street is anything but glamorous before the Oscars take it over.

This is what the red carpet looks like during arrivals for the Academy Awards.

But before Sunday's big show, the glamorous red carpet area is just a blocked off busy street in the middle of a touristy area in Hollywood.

To the right of the carpet, there is a Forever 21 clothing store and Johnny Depp look-a-like from "Pirates of the Caribbean."

For your consideration — why 'The Interview' should've gotten a Best Picture Oscar nod

$

This year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated eight films in the Best Picture category. Critically acclaimed favorites like "Nightcrawler," "Wild" and "Foxcatcher" are among those that were left out of the race.

I think the Academy committed another major oversight by leaving out the controversial comedy "The Interview," which reportedly caused the retaliatory Sony hack that eventually led to the resignation of studio chief Amy Pascal.

Many people wrote off "The Interview" as a sophomoric farce, but I think the movie belongs in the same pantheon as classic political satires like "The Great Dictator" and "Dr Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb," both of which were nominated for Best Picture in their respective years. Watch the video above to see exactly why "The Interview" should be up for best movie.

Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue models

The annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition hit newsstands last week, and everyone is talking about the scandalous cover and beautiful models of all sizes inside the issue.

The magazine features 16 veteran models and eight "rookies," all of whom are flawlessly posed against beautiful backdrops.

But to get the lust-worthy shots, the models have the help of makeup artists, hair stylists, lighting experts, staff dedicated solely to bikini adjustment, and later, Photoshop.

The results are stunning photographs of seemingly perfect-looking women.

While the 24 models featured in the issue are all undoubtedly beautiful, they are also human.

Here is a look at what the top models look like off duty.

Here are the actors who passed on the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' lead roles

"Fifty Shades of Grey" may have dominated the box office this weekend, but it wasn't exactly easy adapting E.L. James' best-selling novel for the big screen.

While Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan ended up playing Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively, finding the right chemistry between two actors with available schedules proved fairly difficult.

Jamie Dornan Dakota Johnson Initially, "Sons of Anarchy" actor Charlie Hunnam was cast as Christian Grey, but many fans of the book didn't approve of the choice.

Charlie HunnamA petition to recast the movie garnered 20,000 signatures on Change.org, and because of scheduling conflicts and reported clashes between Hunnam and Universal Pictures, Hunnam eventually dropped out of the project.

Just 11 days later, "Once Upon A Time" actor Jamie Dornan was cast in the role.

christian grey fifty shades of greyAmid all of the casting back-and-forth, the film's producer Dana Brunetti tweeted somewhat of an explanation:

There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc … So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.

Brunetti was apparently hinting at the handful of actors who actually turned down the leading roles.

While "50 Shades" author E.L. James has said actor Ryan Gosling was the original prototype for Christian Grey, he doesn't do sequels.

"50 Shades" is a guaranteed trilogy.

ryan goslingBefore Hunnam got the gig, Garrett Hedlund reportedly turned it down.

"Hedlund was heavily courted by Universal, but the 'Tron: Legacy' star passed in July because he couldn't connect with the character," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Garrett HedlundBacking for "White Collar" actor Matt Bomer was so strong that a petition started by fans to cast him garnered almost 100,000 signatures.

matt bomer 50 shades of grey elliotOther actors in the mix included "Magic Mike" star Alex Pettyfer, who auditioned for the role"Gossip Girl" actor Chace Crawford, who publicly said he would "love the challenge" of the role; Alexander Skarsgård, who said on "Access Hollywood" he was "born to play" Christian Grey; and Ian Somerhalder, "The Vampire Diaries" star, told Ryan Seacrest that being cast "would be an incredible thing. Hopefully that could pan out."

Fans had their own casting ideas, pushing for Somerhalder as Christian Grey and Alexis Bledel to play Anastasia Steele, in a fan-created mashup trailer that received over a million views.

The role of Anastasia Steele was also a tricky one to cast.

According to Newsweek: "'Pretty Little Liars' star Lucy Hale auditioned, as did 'The Carrie Diaries'' Chloe Bridges, but neither was quite prepared to tackle the subject matter. Hale said the audition made her 'uncomfortable.'"

Lucy HaleBridges, meanwhile, told Cosmopolitan the role was too risqué.

"The scene was, like, the girl telling her friends about some sexcapade she had," Bridges said. "But it goes into extreme detail and uses the word 'sperm' a couple times. I was like, 'I don’t know, guys, I have to go home to my grandparents' house in a few months at Christmas; I don't know if I can do this.'"

Chloe BridgesDespite early rumors that Emma Watson was being considered, the "Harry Potter" actress tweeted:

And so, the role went to Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson's 25-year-old daughter, Dakota Johnson, who had previously appeared only in minor but memorable roles in "21 Jump Street" and "The Social Network."

22 photos that prove the Oscars were ridiculously fun in the '70s

oscars 70s protest

In a golden decade for American film, the Oscars encompassed the gritty, unadulterated fun of the 1970s.

The red carpet fashion, the political statements, and the backstage romances stole the spotlight away from the actual Best Picture winners.

C-3PO worked the paparazzi like no other protocol droid could; Marlon Brando rejected a best actor award; and porn star Linda Lovelace walked among Hollywood's top starlets.

As we gear up for the 87th Academy Awards on February 22, let's take a moment to reminisce about a time when black tie attire was incomplete without a mustache.

The red carpet fashion was absurdly hip. The late "Charlie's Angels" actress Farrah Fawcett wore a slinky gold dress and her trademark, feathered "Farrah Fawcett hair." She was a presenter at the 50th Academy Awards.

Here's what the dinosaurs in 'Jurassic World' will look like

A new "Jurassic Park" sequel is coming to theaters this June.

"Jurassic World" will return to Isla Nublar 22 years after the original 1993 film. Starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, the island is now home to a dinosaur theme park that's open to the public.

Attendance isn't booming, and to attract some new visitors, scientists at the park begin engineering some hybrid dinos.

While we've seen a few trailers for the new film tease a few of the new dinosaurs, we haven't had a good look at them until now.

President's Day Weekend, we headed over to Hasbro's Toy Fair in Times Square to check out the new lineup of "Jurassic World" toys coming out later this year.

We were pretty blown away by the reveal of two of the big dinosaurs that will be in the film.

Check them out below.

Indominus Rex

This is the big one right here. This female dinosaur is the giant, mysterious hybrid dinosaur that has been teased in every trailer.

Here are a few looks at her.

The biggest toy reveal was the presence of a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The cool thing about this toy is that when you stomp his feet on the ground, he makes sounds.

When you flip his tail down, the rest of his body drops down and he lets out a roar. When you flip his tail back up, he roars again.

The T. rex will also get his own battle arena playset that will be available in fall 2015.

How 'Fifty Shades of Grey' would be different if it were a man's fantasy

$
0
0

christian grey fifty shades of grey

The best-selling novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" was written by a woman for women. But what if it were written for men? Would the titillating plot be the same?

Probably not, according to some studies of erotic literature, sexual fantasies, and pornographic consumption.

The reason lies in the fundamental differences found between the kinds of material some men and women consume for pleasure and, ultimately, what each often prefers to think about in their sexual fantasies.

Here's how a male-focused "Fifty Shades" might have been different:

Getting down to business

fifty shades of greyThe story revolves around two main characters, Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, and their relationship that begins with attraction and quickly snowballs into a love affair. But the affair is an unconventional one, driven by Grey's obsession with bondage, dominance, sadism, and masochism — also known as BDSM.

In the beginning, author Erika Mitchell (who wrote the book under the name E.L. James), takes the time to introduce the characters, establish the sexual attraction and tension between them, and build up readers' anticipation for the climatic moment of sexual release.  But it's not until Chapter 8 that Steele and Grey start to get hot and heavy in the bedroom.

That would be eight chapters too many if the novel had been written for men.

In a paper that probed differences in male and female sexual fantasies, published back in 1990 in the Journal of Sex Research, the authors wrote:

"The most striking feature of male-oriented pornography is that sex is sheer lust and physical gratification, devoid of encumbering relationships, emotional elaboration, complicated plot lines, flirtation, courtship, and extended foreplay."

This harkens back to the nature of what men fantasize about, which includes women (or men) who will never reject them and readily consent to sex at any time, according to another paper that reviews the scientific literature on sexual fantasies and was published in 1995 in the Psychological Bulletin. And the advent of the internet has only accelerated the consumption of porn and the pervasiveness of fantasies further.

As a result, the entire beginning of James's book would be of little interest to a male audience. Grey would never have pursued Steele the way he does in the novel by appearing at her place of work or inviting her to his parents' home. Instead, the two of them would likely have got right down to business in Grey's office, when he meets Steele for the first time.

Tell, don't tease

Fifty Shades of GreyGetting to the heated parts sooner wouldn't be the only difference.

Whether it's images in a magazine, scenes in a movie, or words on a page, pornography for men often evokes images of naked bodies, particularly the genitals. The reason for this can be explained by the fact that male brains react differently to explicit sexual images than female brains, according to a study published in 2004 in Nature Neuroscience

A team of researchers at Emory University studied neural activity in the brains of 14 men and 14 women as they looked at images of sexual and social interactions for 30 minutes. An emotional center of the brain, called the amygdala, showed notably higher levels of activity in male brains when they saw sexual images than in female's brains. This can help explain why, in numerous studies including one published late last year, men's sexual fantasies are more detailed and visual than women's.

Although James's bedroom scenes take the fantasy one step farther into the realm of BDSM, the writing itself leaves much to the imagination. For example, during one of the oral sex scenes, the only body parts referred to by name are the mouth, tongue, and throat. And the closest James gets to mentioning genitalia by name is the word "popsicle."

While "popsicle" does a good job as an analogous term, if James had been a man writing erotica for a male audience, this scene would have likely involved another "p" word. Moreover, it also might have included more visual imagery and explicit mentions of other body parts.

The more the merrier

fifty shades elevatorIt's likely that Steele would not be the only person getting spanked and whipped in a version of "Fifty Shades of Grey" written for men.

In fact, according to a study published last year in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, one of the ten things a sample of 717 men in Canada fantasized about the most was having sex with more than three women at once.

In addition to having sex with multiple partners simultaneously, men also tend to fantasize about different partners more often than women, studies show. So, instead of chasing after Steele the entire time, Grey would have probably been soliciting other women as well as Steele. A BDSM player, of sorts. Who else he might have lured into his "play room" is left to your imagination.

So, while men might wonder why "Fifty Shades of Grey" is such a hit with the ladies, opening the book will probably just satisfy their curiosity — not their fantasies.

The ESPN Body Issue is about celebrating the peak of human potential and the kind of form the human body, when specialized, can really look lik. The Swimsuit Issue has a lot more [of a] sexual side to it, while I don’t think the Body Issue is overtly sexual whereas Sports Illustrated is.

The difference in how I approached it is when I posed for ESPN Body, I really tried to be a lot more cut and a lot more close to my prime fighting shape because I was being photographed as a fighter and trying to look more like a fighter.

I purposely tried to get a little bit heavier for the SI issue so I was a little bit curvier and not in top fight shape look but the look at which I feel I’m the most attractive. It’s very natural for a person’s body to go through seasons.

Ronda Rousey Sports IllustratedRousey is no stranger to gaining and losing weight quickly.

In order to maintain 135 pounds, the weight limit for the women’s bantamweight division, Rousey must make sure she's not a pound over when it's time to fight.

To ensure she'll make weight, Rousey explained to the New Yorker that she goes on an incredibly salty diet for a week so that her body bloats. Then when the fight is close, she removes all salt from her diet so her body lets go of all of that fluid with the help of a steam room.

Before a fight in February 2014, a typical breakfast for Rousey was eggs, turkey bacon, and spinach with a lot of pink Himalayan salt.

Ronda RouseyBefore Rousey became the first female UFC fighter, she went to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 for judo.

Rousey was forced to take a graveyard shift at a 24 Hour Fitness in California while trying to figure out what she wanted to do.

In 2010, she returned to fighting at an MMA gym in Los Angeles. In just seven months, she went from an out-of-work ex-Olympian to a professional MMA fighter, winning her first fight in 25 seconds.

CEO Dana White, who previously vowed to never employ a female fighter, said, "I think she's going to be a big superstar."

In 2014, Rousey made her major motion picture debut in "Expendables 3."

Ronda Rousey Expendables 3This year, she will appear in "Furious 7" and play herself in the upcoming "Entourage" movie.

"I’ll keep fighting and filming together. Having them both allows me to do each one longer," she tells USA Today. "I'm able to step away from one and allow myself to miss the other. I’ve found an amazing balance. I’m always happy and engaged and motivated."

Ronda Rousey expendablesRousey adds that creating new goals for herself  keeps her motivated.

I love fighting and it’s my passion and it’s the reason Hollywood took an interest in me at all, but I’m no dummy. I know there’s a short shelf life in the sport and I don’t want to be left out like I was after the Olympics [she won a bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Games in Beijing] with no options. I need to have a new grand goal to go after because when I have no goal is when I get depressed and I’m not letting that happen again.

I set extremely high goals for myself. The first day I stepped onto a judo mat I was like ‘I’m winning the Olympics,'” she said. “The first day I did MMA, ‘I’m winning the UFC.’ The first time I had an acting gig, I said ‘I want to be the highest-grossing actor in the world.’ That’s what my goal is.
