Here's The Moment 'The Office' Cast Knew The Show Had To End

the office

"The Office" ran on NBC for nine seasons, and even devoted fans can probably say that the sitcom started to show its age after a while.

Even one of the show's central characters can attest to the fact that the cast collectively knew it was time to say goodbye to "The Office" when they were filming the ninth season, which ultimately ended up being the final season of the series.

Rainn Wilson, who played character Dwight Schrute, spoke about his experiences on the popular NBC show at the AOL Build Speaker Series on Tues., Jan. 20. Moderator Joshua Horowitz asked if there was a tipping point for the series, when the cast knew it had to end.

"That's exactly what happened in the final season of 'The Office,'" he answered. "We all ... me, John [Krasinski], Jenna [Fischer], Ed [Helms], especially ... were like, 'This has been fantastic, I love this job, I love you all here, it's time for this show to end."

"We went into Greg's [Daniels, showrunner], the producers' office, and were like 'let's end, lets make this the final season a great send-off,'" he added. "I think every single person was just really ready to end. We did 200 episodes. We had a great time."

Even though Wilson was ready for the show to end — and that much talked-about Dwight Schrute spinoff never came to realization — Wilson doesn't take it for granted. "I'm really spoiled," he said. "Because it's the greatest work experience ever."

People Are Up In Arms Over The Obviously Fake Baby Used In 'American Sniper'

American Sniper fake baby bradley cooper

"American Sniper" is currently breaking box-office records and garnering critical acclaim with six Oscar nominations, while at the same time igniting a lot of controversy.

The latest issue that has filmgoers up in arms is the use of a fake baby in the Clint Eastwood-directed war biopic.

During what is supposed to be an emotional scene, the doll's stiffness is evident as Bradley Cooper and his onscreen wife, played by Sienna Miller, pass the partially mechanized baby back and forth as they discuss Cooper's character leaving for another tour.

American Sniper Baby

You can even see Cooper moving the doll's arm:bradley cooper american sniper fake baby gif

Critics were quick to take notice:

  • "I have never seen so many terrible fake babies in one film." —The Sunday Times
  • "Laughably fake." —Film School Rejects
  • "They’re conspicuously wobbling rather than moving, which makes the crying sound effects seem a bit eerily detached." —The Telegraph
  • "Jarringly fake ... There's just no excuse for that kind of bush-league nonsense."NewsOK
  • "It's so obvious, and neither one of them looks like they are comfortable holding it. The weight's all wrong, and it shows from the way they have to try to liven it up with their own body language. Cooper in particular looks like he's just plain never held a baby." —Hitfix

It didn't get past viewers, either:

But it was journalist Mark Harris' tweet that finally prompted a response from production.

Harris tweeted:

"That plastic baby in American Sniper is going to be rationalized by Eastwood auteur cultists until the end of days."

"American Sniper" screenwriter and executive producer Jason Hall replied via Twitter (and later deleted):

"hate to ruin the fun but real baby #1 showed up with a fever. Real baby #2 was no show. (Clint voice) Gimme the doll, kid."

Many have hypothesized that Eastwood's fast-paced shooting style didn't allow production enough time to find another real baby.

The Hollywood Reporter explained the difficulty of having a real baby on a film set:

Shooting in California poses some challenges when employing a real baby given the state's strict laws (part of the movie was shot in Los Angeles). Infants must be at least 15 days old, and babies from that age up to six months can be employed for only one period of two consecutive hours in any given day. Moreover, that time frame has to be between 9:30-11:30 a.m. or from 2:30-4:30 p.m., and one studio teacher along with one nurse must be on set during filming.

Doesn't sound ideal for Eastwood's directing style.

Katy Perry Just Donated $5,000 To Help Fund TLC's Final Album On Kickstarter

Katy Perry

Katy Perry has donated $5,000 to '90s R&B group TLC, which is raising money on Kickstarter to fund its next and final album, TMZ reports.

Perry's donation is part of the $107,000 (and counting) that's been raised for the group's final album, which TLC chose to crowdfund in order to retain creative control over it.

"While major labels offer artists multimillion dollar recording and marketing budgets, they don't often give artists complete control of their own music. It is ESSENTIAL that we create our final album completely on our own terms, without any restrictions, with YOU," the group said on Kickstarter.

For her $5,000 donation, Perry is eligible for a bunch of perks from TLC, including a slumber party with group members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins or Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas.

TLC has set its fundraising goal as $150,000 by Feb. 15. Considering the campaign was launched on Sunday, it's looking like TLC will at least reach its goal before its deadline.

According to the group's Kickstarter project, all the money raised will go toward funding the production and release of the new album. "The initial goal of $150,000 will go towards a writing session in the studio with a producer and engineer. The money beyond that will go to booking music producers, writing sessions, mixing sessions, recording sessions, and SO much more," according to TLC's Kickstarter page.

TLC says this is the final album it will release. The last TLC album, "3D," was released in 2002. It will also be the first TLC album featuring only members Watkins and Thomas. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, the group's third member, died in a car crash in Honduras in 2002 while filming a documentary.

Step Inside The Odd World Of The Big Apple Circus, Where Performers Live, Train, And Find Love

$

BAC intro hurrayAll over the United States, the arrival of the circus is an anticipated yearly event, met with excitement by people of all ages, and forgotten once the tent is dismantled and the act leaves town.

But for the performers — the ones who wow us with their daring feats and make us laugh with their slapstick humor — the circus is more than just a fleeting spectacle to see once a year. For them, the circus is a family, a career, and a way of life.

In mid-January, one of the most acclaimed circuses on earth, the Big Apple Circus, took down its tents at Manhattan's Lincoln Center, ending another successful run of shows. Before they headed off to do it all again in Bridgewater, New Jersey, we met with a few of the star performers to see what circus life is like behind the big top.

Every year for the past 38 years, New York's historic Big Apple Circus has performed over 300 shows in five different venues on the East Coast. During its Manhattan run, which ended last week, circus performers put on 135 shows and entertained over 162,000 fans in a one-ring tent behind Lincoln Center.

For its performers, the circus is a way of life and a career path. We had the chance to go behind the curtain of Big Apple Circus three days before it departed for New Jersey, to chat with the cast.

Traveling 10 to 11 months out of the year, life on the road can be lonely and unstable. Fortunately, troupe members become surrogate families.

Disney Bought George Lucas’ Ideas For The New 'Star Wars' Trilogy And Then Scrapped Them

$

george lucas r2 d2

When George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 for $4 billion, the sale included treatments for Lucas’ "Star Wars" ideas for episodes VII, VIII, and IX.

So even though the Mouse House was now in charge of all things “Star Wars,” it appeared as if fans were still going to get Lucas’ version of the next trilogy.

It turns out that's not the case.

Speaking with Cinemablend at the press conference for his new animated feature, “Strange Magic,” Lucas said Disney essentially scrapped his ideas for episodes VII, VIII, and IX.

“The ones that I sold to Disney, they came up to the decision that they didn't really want to do those,” Lucas told Cinemablend. “So they made up their own. So it's not the ones that I originally wrote.”

According to Bloomberg, Disney CEO Robert Iger thought the treatments "had a lot of potential."

Lucas has been tossing around ideas for a third "Star Wars" trilogy since the launch of the original trilogy. A Time article from March 1978 suggested Lucas had plans for up to a dozen "Star Wars" movies.

He even pitched the idea of "Episode VII" to actor Mark Hamill in the '80s.

Lucas is now serving as a "creative consultant" on the new films.

What does that mean? Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy described it like this:

The beauty of the collaboration that can continue is as we work our way through these scripts if we're sitting and saying, "Hmm, I wonder if this character can do that?" or "Does this make sense within the rules of 'Star Wars'?" … He's the keeper of the flame when it comes to that.

Rainn Wilson Doesn't Care That You'll Always Think Of Him As His Character From 'The Office'

rainn wilson

Rainn Wilson doesn't care that people might always associate him with Dwight Schrute, the character he played for nine seasons NBC's "The Office."

After all, it was a career-building role.

"I think I'll always be known as Dwight first and foremost, and that's okay," the actor said at an AOL Build Speaker Series event Jan. 20. "It was the greatest work experience."

But he is aware that his character on "The Office" was very specific — so memorable, in fact, that his performance may be ingrained in some people's minds.

"I think some people are saying, 'Dwight will always be Dwight and that's all he can do,'" says Wilson. "That's fine, and ... then there are some people who will see that you can play a lot of colors, and facets, and textures."

the officeThat's what Wilson hopes to do with his new television show, "Backstrom," which premieres on FOX Thurs. Jan. 22 at 9 p.m. Wilson plays Detective Everett Backstrom – a misanthropic, rude, and surly detective who happens to be really good at his job. However, his negative worldview has him falling apart as he solves crime after crime. It's a crime drama with a dash of levity, and Sarah Chalke co-stars as his ex-fiance.

Backstrom ostensibly has a lot of negative qualities, and given Dwight's unpersonable demeanor, it's arguable that Wilson plays a lot of characters who are unlikable at face-value. Wilson knows that that's true, but he always aims to dig deeper. He mentioned that even though Backstrom and Dwight are different — Dwight's a "nerdy suck up" and Backstrom is a total cynic — he followed the same model for developing their characters: making the characters complete, not just one-note caricatures.

"He's [Backstrom], got an emotional life, he’s got love interests, he has a family... [you get to] see how he got to be how he is."

Wilson says that he "has an emotional life [...] if you're specific enough as an actor, you can take people along."

Here's Your First Look At What A Game Will Look Like On The Apple Watch (AAPL)

Since Apple unveiled the Apple Watch in September, people have been wondering what games will look like on the watch's small display.

Luckily the game studio behind Tiny Tower just shared with Touch Arcade a mockup of how their upcoming game "Letterpad" will look like on the Apple Watch, and it's a good example of how basic puzzle games will appear on the watch's 1.5-inch display.

Apple Watch game app

Letterpad, which shares similarities to word-search game Boggle, asks players to form words that relate to a certain topic. The game will launch with 200 puzzles, and it's also being developed for iPhone in addition to the Apple Watch.

Letterpad is still in development, so the look and layout could still change before launch. And while it's not a graphically intense game, it's nice to see how the Apple Watch's display can play nice with simpler games.

As we get closer to the launch of the Apple Watch, which we're hearing will be around March, it will be interesting to see how visually complex games like Hearthstone or Angry Birds approach the new platform, and if they choose to release standalone apps or simply opt for push notifications.

Topless Page 3 Returns To British Tabloid 'The Sun'

afp topless page three returns to britains the sun

London (AFP) - British tabloid The Sun published a photo of a winking topless model on Thursday, rebutting reports it had ended the controversial tradition that has featured in the newspaper since 1970.

Newspaper The Times, which like the Sun is part of billionaire media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's News UK group, reported on Tuesday that the page three feature had been shelved and the news was welcomed by government ministers.

Nevertheless, The Sun featured a photo of a bare-breasted blonde woman in its Thursday edition under the words "clarifications and corrections".

"Further to recent reports in all other media outlets, we would like to clarify that this is Page 3 and this is a picture of Nicole, 22, from Bournemouth," the caption to the photograph read.

"We would like to apologise on behalf of the print and broadcast journalists who have spent the last two days talking and writing about us."

Amid the publicity, the Sun had directed readers to find the topless photos on a dedicated website. Head of public relations Dylan Sharpe told AFP on Tuesday "The Sun hasn't said either way what's happening to page 3."

The No More Page 3 campaign, which had triumphantly celebrated the apparent change earlier in the week, announced "It seems the fight might be back on".

Last year, Murdoch indicated the photos might be falling out of favour by asking his Twitter followers whether women looked better in "fashionable clothes" and describing the tradition as "old fashioned".

Hello, World! Here's What You Would Be Doing This Morning If You Were In Davos...

Davos Sunrise

Guten morgen!*

It's 7AM Davos time, and that means it's time to get up and get to the Congress Center.

(Still on US time? Stayed out until 3am at the DLD party last night? Tough!)

It's time to put on your suit, down some muesli and cappuccino, and get going. The fun has already started...

I took these pictures of the Davos morning routine a few years ago, but it was the same deal this morning. Oh, and we're in Switzerland, so it's actually "guete morge."

You'll probably be staying at some ski lodge in town, like the "Club Hotel." That's good news and bad news. Good news: You're in Davos, instead of the other ski town nearby. Bad news, you're far enough from the Congress Center that you have to catch a bus...

And it's COLD this morning. But the bus stop is filled with people, and chances are, you'll know some of them.

Sure enough! There's Loic LeMeur, Geraldine LeMeur, and Robert Scoble, along with a bunch of skiers and schoolkids.

Rihanna Wins Battle With Topshop Over A T-Shirt Showing Her Face

rihanna tank top

Rihanna has won her long-running legal dispute with retailer Topshop, which had been selling a tank top with an image of the popstar without asking her permission, ITV reports

Three judges at the Court of Appeal today agreed with an earlier High Court ruling that selling the tank top could deceive some shoppers and Rihanna’s fans into thinking she endorsed the item of clothing.

As ITV explains, celebrities in the UK have no legal right to control how their images are used. However, if a product is marketed in a way that could suggest the celebrity endorsed it, that can amount to “passing off,” a legal term for an unauthorized use of a trademark or image rights.

The dispute extends back to 2013 when Rihanna won her case in the High Court and Topshop was ordered to stop selling clothing with her image. Rihanna’s legal team had argued the specific image on that tank top — which featured the star in dungarees and with her hair tied-up in curls — was from an unauthorized photo taken back in 2011 when she was filming the music video for "We Found Love" in Northern Island.

The judge had also considered the fact that Rihanna had a collaboration with other brands at the time, such as rival UK high street retailer River Island and UK telecoms provider TalkTalk, so it could be damaging for Topshop to give the impression she was endorsing its brand. Rihanna also previously had an association with Topshop in the past — in 2010when the retailer ran a competition to win a personal shopping trip with Rihanna and in 2012 when its social media team made a fuss of the popstar visiting the store and wearing its garments — which made the matter more confusing.

Topshop launched its appeal last year, with its lawyer Geoffrey Hobbs QC arguing there is a long tradition of retailers using celebrities’ images — from Elvis Presley to Jimi Hendrix. But that appeal was overturned in court today.

In the full Court of Appeal ruling, Lord Justice Underhill said: “The judge's conclusion that some members of the relevant public would think that the t-shirt was endorsed by Rihanna is based essentially on two things - her past public association with Topshop (as described by Kitchin LJ at paras. 17-18) and the particular features of the image itself, which is apparently posed and shows her with the very distinctive hairstyle adopted in the publicity for Talk That Talk. I do not believe that either by itself would suffice; in particular, Rihanna's association with Topshop does not seem to me to have been such as to weigh very heavily in the balance. But the judge considered the question very carefully, taking due account of the factors going the other way, and in my view he was entitled to find that the two features in combination were capable of giving rise to the necessary representation.”

Mike Gardner, a partner and ahead of intellectual property and commercial at Wedlake Bell LLP, told ITV ahead of the ruling today that it could have wider implications: “Although each case is different, if Topshop fails to overturn the ruling, this may discourage other retailers from selling similar items in the future and may lead other celebrities to take a tougher line in policing their rights.”

BuzzFeed’s First-Ever TV Ad Stars Cats, Of Course

buzzfeed and friskies tv ad

BuzzFeed is set to air its first TV ad during the Super Bowl on February 1, Adweek reports. The stars of its debut spot? Cats of course.

The 60-second TV ad is an extension of the hugely “Dear Kitten” BuzzFeed branded video series, which is funded by cat food brand Friskies. It’s hugely popular, with the series amassing more than 30 million views since it launched last year.

The TV spot, which is the fifth installment of the series, follows cats who are puzzled by humans who all gather, around the “lightbox,” wearing NFL jerseys, eating “human moist food,” and competing to be the first to jump in the air when the sound gets loud.

It’s also the first time both brands will be advertising during the Super Bowl, although there’s a slight caveat to that landmark: They have only paid for a regional advertising buy. The ad will only run in Pawnee City, Kitty Hawk and Los Gatos (yes, they were deliberately cat-themed) — meaning BuzzFeed and Friskies will be shelling out far less than the $4.5 million required to run a national ad spot during the big game. The Church of Scientology releases a "Super Bowl" ad in this way each year, while it emerged this week The Verge has paid just $700 for its "Super Bowl" slot, by advertising in one region alone.

The ad was created by BuzzFeed Motion Pictures, the publisher’s in-house video studio that creates both general video content for the site and paid-for content for advertisers.

Jonathan Perelman, vice president of BuzzFeed Motion Pictures, told Adweek this campaign could encourage more of its advertisers to think of BuzzFeed, rather than their ad agencies, when it comes to creating their TV ads.

He added: "I'm sure it will happen in the future. Ideas will be incubated, data-driven online, and then it will move into campaigns we'll see on air during the Big Game or other on-air events. [Publishing online] is a way to build an audience, and you can simply move that into a different format, say, television."

A full 3-minute version of the TV ad has also been released online. Watch it below:

Bill Gates Tricked Jimmy Fallon Into Drinking Water Made From Poop

screen shot 2015 01 22 at 11.13.32 am (1)

Bill Gates appeared on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" on Wednesday night to talk about the Omniprocessor, the latest project from the philanthropic Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Omniprocessor is a machine that turns human waste into clean water and electricity.

Gates invited Fallon to taste-test two glasses of water: one that came out of a bottle and one that came from the Omniprocessor. Fallon picked glass No. 2, which he said tasted "pretty good." He was pretty sure he had drunk bottled water, but Gates revealed both glasses contained "poop water."

Gates says at least 2 billion people around the world don't have access to clean water and sanitation. "We challenged engineers to make something that could take sewage and very inexpensively get rid of sewage," Gates told Fallon.

"Sewage is bad — it causes a lot of diseases, like diarrhea, because people don't have good sanitation systems. We said it's way too expensive, the way the rich countries do it. Make something we can put throughout Africa and get rid of all that sewage."

The Omniprocessor, with development led by the Seattle-based engineering firm Janicki Bioenergy, is solving this problem by extracting water from sewage that arrives at its facility. When the sewage is dried, it's incinerated to create steam, which powers the Omniprocessor.

Earlier in January, Gates posted about the Omniprocessor on his blog, with a video featuring his drinking the purified water. In the video, Gates says the Omniprocessor processes water as "good as any he's had out a bottle" and he'd "happily drink it every day."

You can watch the whole video below:

Shirin Oskooi, senior director of product management at Yahoo, will make her reality TV debut on February 25 as part of the cast of the 30th season of "Survivor."

Oskooi is a longtime "Survivor" fan and has tried out for the show more than 10 years in a row.

She describes herself as "competitive, clever, and quirky," and lists "traveling, exotic food, whistling champion, and mind games" as her hobbies.

Prior to Yahoo, Oskooi was a product manager at Google, where she led the design, launch, and growth of Google Calendar.

In a special twist for this season, contestants will be split into three tribes based on their occupations. Oskooi will be a part of the White Collar Masaya Tribe, made up of other business-oriented people.

There's also a Blue Collar Escameca Tribe, which includes a postal worker and hairdresser, as well as a No Collar Nagote Tribe, made up of "free-spirits who refuse to make or abide by rules."

The 18 castaways will be competing to survive on a beach in Nicaragua.

I’m super smart, observant, and don’t let my emotions govern my actions at work, let alone in games. I have no qualms with using people or their secrets to get ahead."

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer tweeted her congratulations to Oskooi.

Until now, Sony Entertainment's movie studio side has been most affected by the Sony hack stemming from the release of "The Interview," but it sounds like Sony Music may be the hackers' latest victim.

"Top executives at Sony Music are bracing for more embarrassing e-mails to leak as part of the Sony hack after their boss — Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton — called to offer a 'blanket apology' in advance of any details that come out," sources told Page Six.

Industry sources further told Page Six that Sony Music honchos are most concerned about details of artists’ salaries and contracts  including live performance riders  being made public.

Additionally, recently leaked emails alluded to a potential "top secret" sale of music publishing division Sony/ATV. Lynton and Sony/ATV head Martin Bandier have both denied Sony Music is for sale, but Lynton reportedly "called a number of department heads within Sony, including Marty and [Sony Music CEO] Doug Morris to give a blanket apology in advance for whatever else comes out,” added a PageSix source.

Sony had "no comment" on the PageSix report, but a Sony source tells Business Insider that Lynton "did not make a blanket apology, he only called two top executives about a couple of very specific issues."

In December, Sony president Steven Mosko and co-chairman Amy Pascal had their email inboxes made public by a group of hackers calling themselves "Guardians of Peace."

As a result, salaries of both celebrities in Sony movies and Sony employees were revealed. Not to mention a few salacious exchanges about A-list celebrities and even President Obama.

American officials have concluded that North Korea was "centrally involved" in the Sony hack and intelligence officials told the Times that the US intelligence community "concluded that the cyberattack was both state-sponsored and far more destructive than any seen before on American soil."

Here's What Convinced Rainn Wilson To Do Another TV Show After 'The Office'

backstrom rainn wilson"The Office" ran for nine seasons on NBC. That's a long time for a television show. So long, that actor Rainn Wilson was initially averse to acting in another TV series.

He told the following anecdote at the AOL Build Speaker Series on Jan. 20:

"I was finishing up 'The Office' in the final week, and my agent called, and they were like, 'we want you do read this script,' and I was like, 'okay,' and they said it was a TV pilot, and I was like, 'you're fired.'"

He was joking about firing his agents, but he wasn't kidding about how much it was going to take for him to do another television series.

So what ultimately convinced him?

A good script, a rich character, and a seat at the producer's table made it an enticing choice for Wilson.

"The part was insane," he said. "...Interesting and complex and difficult, and I was like, I have to play this role."

The series is based on Swedish author and criminologist Leif G.W. Persson's books about a nasty, boorish detective, Evert Bäckström (changed to Everett Backstrom for the American television series). The books are incredibly successful in Scandinavia.

Wilson was initially approached to do the series not long after "The Office" bowed in 2013. At that time, the series was set to air on CBS. However, after the network passed on the series, it eventually landed at FOX.

Ultimately, Wilson got a "nice year off," as he puts, it before filming the 13 episodes.

It also doesn't hurt that this time around, he's not just a featured player. He's the titular character and also a producer on the show, with showrunner Hart Hansen, Persson, and Persson's Scandinavian literary agent, Niclas Salomonsson, acting as executive producers.

"I [wanted] to have a place at the table ... a lot of the time as an actor, you're left out," he said.

"Backstrom" premieres on Fox Thurs., Jan 22 at 9 p.m.
