Acura Sought 'Not Too Dark' Black Actor For Super Bowl Ad (AXP)

Acura and its ad agency, RPA, put out a casting call for its 2012 Super Bowl ad featuring Jerry Seinfeld that sought an African-American actor to play a car dealer who was "not too dark," according to Jalopnik.

The client sought a performer for the role of "African American Car Dealer" who was "Nice looking, friendly. Not too dark. Will work with a MAJOR COMEDIAN." (Click to enlarge document.)

The call was put out by Ocean Park Casting. A message left for the casting director, Cathi Carlton, was not immediately returned. The agency that produced the ad was rp& (a division of RPA). It was directed by Craig Gillespie of MJZ, according to Adweek.

Racism in the casting of black actors for commercials should come as no surprise. For years, Madison Avenue has turned to a single actor, Jamison Reeves, to play a stereotypically non-threatening black male in ads. His bearded, bushy haired hipster with trendy glasses has been in at least 40 -- forty! -- TV commercials.

Here's the spot:

Correction: This item originally incorrectly identified the client as American Express. While Seinfeld has done commercials for Amex, his 2012 spot was of course for Acura. Apologies for the error.

$60,000: Charlize Theron's Newly Adopted Son, Jackson

After adopting son Jackson from South Africa last month, the public have yet to see anything but Charlize Theron carrying a baby bundle.

“The hottest thing is pregnancy, and then babies,” paparazzo Vladimir “Dutch” Labissiere told The Daily. Charlize is “not as big as Beyoncé,” Navarre said. “But the baby picture is still something.”

$100,000: Demi Moore Post-Rehab

Demi Moore's post-rehab pics could easily fetch six figures, as paparazzi told The Daily that celebs going through personal turmoil often make for a big payday.

As one pap stated, “Whether she comes out looking really ropy or really glam and bounces back with a guy, that’s what everyone wants to see.”

$110,000: Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux

X17 paparazzi agency president Frank Navarre says the couple's debut shots raked in $110,000 for his agency.

“We broke that story, and it was a very good one," said Navarre. "Everybody denied it and we were right."

Here Are The Celebrities Who Made Time's 'Most Influential' List

Time-Most-Influential-List

The all-encompassing Time's 100 Most Influential People list is out and 20 celebrities from the entertainment and fashion world have made the cut this year.

There are some sports names and the political/investment people, but here are the comedians, talk show hosts, fashion designers and more who have changed the world in their own unique way.

You'll recognized most of the names.

  1. Christian Marclay: A video artist who has entranced the world with his art installation called "The Clock." The "clock" is a 24-hour montage of movie and TV scenes that are played in real time with the clock's movements. The installation has been on exhibit everywhere from Jerusalem to Canada.

  2. Viola Davis: The two time Oscar-nominee, made the list because of her powerful performance in "The Help." Her bio was written by fellow "Help" star Cicely Tyson

  3. E.L. James: If you don't yet know about this author's contribution to the literature world, you will soon now that her book trilogy starting with "50 Shades of Grey" is being turned into a movie.

  4. Louis CK: This talented comedian is responsible for popularizing the $5 comedy special and has a hit television show about his own life on FX. It's not hard to see why he's made the list.

  5. Rihanna: Fashion designer Stella McCartney gushes about this superstar's charity work with children and of course, her bestselling albums don't hurt her chances to make the list.

  6. Kristen Wiig: With the gigantic success of Bridesmaids and an Oscar nomination to boot, Time would be ridiculous not to have Wiig listed. Comedy's most popular producer Judd Apatow writes Wiig's essay.

  7. Jessica Chastain: This actress had a busy 2011 with 5 films and an Oscar nomination for "The Help."

  8. Raphael Saadiq: The best-selling singer of "Stone Rollin'" and the formerly of the smash musical group Tony! Toni! Toné!

  9. Ann Patchett: Author of the best-seller "Bel Canto" and "State of Wonder"

  10. Asghat Farhadi: Farhadi made huge waves in Hollywood with his controversial and fantastic film "A Separation" which earned Iran its first Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

  11. Sarah Burton: Fashion designer

  12. Sarmeen Obaid-Chinoy: Chinoy's "Saving Face" documentary won the Best Documentary Oscar this year and earned her respect from the Pakistani and American communities.

  13. Chelsea Handler: :he comedy talk show host turned TV show creator's series "Are You There Chelsea" may not be the best, but it doesn't mean Handler's not a powerful force for female comedians.

  14. Harvey Weinstein: "there are movie producers and then there are movie producers" Johnny Depp writes in Weinstein's essay. Depp's right, movie producing and Weinstein's name are synonymous, especially with all of the ratings protests surrounding "Bully."

  15. Tilda Swinton: Her performance in the 2011 film "We Need to Talk About Kevin" has solidified Swinton's status as one of the most powerful actresses of our time.

  16. Duchess Kate and Pippa Middleton: Move over Prince William. Your bride and sister-in-law are more influential than you!

  17. Adele: Because what other singer was more popular in 2011?

  18. Matt Lauer: The "Today" show host beat out all other talk-show frontmen (besides one, we'll get to that)

  19. Claire Danes: Her new show "Homeland" is extremely influential to cable TV. Former CIA covert-operations officer Valerie Plame Wilson certainly agrees- she wrote Danes' essay.

  20. Stephen Colbert: The Comedy Central main man himself. We bet we'll be hearing about this on his show tonight.

Charlie Sheen's New Show Is Already Facing A $50 Million Lawsuit

$

0

Charlie-Sheen-Anger-Management-ShowCharlie Sheen's comeback show is getting hit with a $50 million lawsuit today from Jason Shuman from Blue Star Entertainment.

Shuman claimed that he helped develop "Anger Management" for two years along with the show's existing executive producer Joe Roth who has been involved with the production of popular films like 2010's "Alice in Wonderland" and the upcoming "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Shuman says he was cut out of the process once Charlie Sheen signed on to star in the series.

The Hollywood Reporter got their hands on the lawsuit which stated that Roth and his production company Revolution Studios developed the show with Shuman "under the false promise of receiving significant backend ownership in, and producer credit and fees on, the show".

Shuman claims Roth hired him and his production company to go through Revolution Studios' film archives to see if any of the movies could be turned into successful TV shows. Through this partnership, Shuman says he helped create the TBS show "Are We There Yet?" but was not given proper compensation. Shuman went on to say that Roth promised to make it up to him with the next show they produced together.

Apparently, that next show happened to be Sheen's next venture.

Roth has basically responded to the lawsuit with a shrug. The producer told The Hollywood Reporter that the case has no legs to stand on. "We reviewed this issue months ago with our lawyers, our lawyers determined it has no merit, and we thought the issue had been dropped."

Whether this lawsuit affects the show's finances or its chances on making the June 28th premiere date is unknown. But we're sure we'll hear some choice words about the legal troubles from Sheen soon enough.

PEGGY WAS NOT ALONE: These Famous Ads Were Created By Women In The Mad Men Era

$

real women of mad menWhile men certainly made up most of the advertisers on Madison Avenue in the 1960s, some of the most famous campaigns from the "Mad Men" era of advertising were actually created by female copywriters. In real life, Peggy Olson, the underappreciated copywriter on "Mad Men," would have been less lonely than her TV character.

Many of the ads were for soaps and beauty products, but some were for cars and other products that did not fall into the traditionally female beauty and domestic categories.

And one of the first ads that used sex appeal as a selling device—for Woodbury Facial Soap—was created by Helen Lansdowne Resor at JWT in 1910.

Also in this series:

Shirley Polykoff of Foote, Cone & Belding created this famous Clairol campaign in 1959.

Mary Wells' eponymous agency, Wells Rich Greene, made this quintessentially sexist ad for the former National Airlines in 1971.

Helen Lansdowne Resor began as a copywriter at JWT in 1907. In 1910, she was responsible popularizing the use of sex appeal for Woodbury Facial Soap.

Lisa-Vanderpump-Real-Housewives

As the Queen Bee on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, UK-born Lisa Vanderpump, is known for her glamorous lifestyle, obsession with the color pink and adorable Pomeranian named Giggy (short for Gigolo), who has his own Twitter following. But Vanderpump is also the restaurateur behind two celebrity-frequented Los Angeles restaurants, Sur and Villa Blanca, and foodies will remember her from a cameo on the second season of "Top Chef: Just Desserts", when contestants had to create a rose-colored party spread.

Vanderpump has parlayed her ultimate hostess reputation into a new book, "Simply Divine: A Guide to Easy, Elegant and Affordable Entertaining" (Running Press). The overwhelmingly pink manual includes photos of the famed housewife in pretty dresses and straightforward recipes, but we discovered an unexpected highlight: Irony-free etiquette tips on how to deal with less-than-divine guests. SHIA LABEOUF IS CRAZY: His 7 Awesome Illustrations Prove It

shia-labeoufWhen you think of Shia LaBeouf, you probably think of him rudely claiming he had sex with Megan Fox when she was with her current husband, 90210‘s eternal babe Brian Austin Green. Or maybe you think of his numerous legal troubles. If you are anything like me though, you definitely consider his work as a child actor in Even Stevens to be his greatest achievement to date. I mean, that show was GOLD.

Since his Disney days, Shia has obviously grown up. In fact, many feel he has been overtaken by the curse of Hollywood, which turns good-natured kids into spoiled brats who tool around in Maseratis making bad decisions. Regardless, Shia has always been talented and clearly takes his craft seriously. But when I came across this, I was certainly thrown for a loop.

Apparently Shia made an appearance at the C2E2 Comics Convention, which was probably chock full of hot nerds. He debuted his own comic book called “An Illustrated Guide Into My Thoughts,” and words don’t do it justice. Click through the above gallery for a look at Shia’s latest work. How Ryanair Is Single-Handedly Wrecking Musicians' Lives

$

Jaunted

Ryanair, the most hated European budget airline, is known for advertising low fares and then hiking up the actual cost with fees for luggage, food, and priority boarding.

Most Ryanair passengers know what to expect when traveling on the airline, but the company recently made some of their most faithful customers angry: musicians.

Many musicians, particularly those based in Ireland (Ryanair's home country), rely on the airline to get them to the continent when they're playing gigs or going on tour.

However, new fees for musical instruments have made the cost of flying so expensive that musicians are struggling to afford it, and are even forced to turn down gigs.

Ryanair currently charges a fee for instruments placed in the hold, even though these instruments would otherwise be subject to the same baggage fee as any other suitcase.

Even when instruments are small enough to be brought on the plane and placed safely in an overhead bin, musicians are still subject to additional charges. Although some musicians (cellists, for example) often pay for a separate seat for their instrument, Ryanair is mandating that they place their instruments in the hold, meaning the cellist has paid both an extra seat cost and an instrument fee.

Musicians are banding together (no pun intended) to punish Ryanair with a boycott.

"It's just penalizing working musicians for doing their job," said Keith Pascoe, an Ireland-based violinist who founded the "Musicians against Ryanair" Facebook group. The group reached 15,000 members at its peak before being converted into a page by Facebook.

"Now with the London Olympics refusing to pay musicians for their participation and Ryanair targeting us, we really do feel the underdog," Pascoe said. "I fly twenty times a year from Cork and used to use RA so go figure the amount they are losing on 15,000 Facebookers who are boycotting them."

TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL: 10 Films To Keep An Eye On

Tribeca-Film-Festival-Logo-2012

New York's 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival kicks off today and the festival's reputation of debuting small-budget yet big buzz films looks like this year will be no different.

The new crop of films vying for the titles of Best Narrative, Documentary and Short films definitely won't disappoint a crowd looking for independent gems. Here are a few we believe should be highlighted for future awards and possibly even box-office glory.

1. "Your Sister's Sister": Premiering at its third film festival (the film made stops at Toronto and Sundance), this film by "Humpday" director Lynn Shelton is about a man (Mark Duplass) who is still trying to get his life back on track after the death of his brother. His best friend Iris (Emily Blunt) sends him to her lake house for some solo re-discovery but he ends up meeting and hooking up with Iris' sister Hannah. Oh, and did we mention Iris is in love with him?

2. "First Winter": a bunch of Brooklynites must face the dwindling chances of survival after an almost-apocalyptic blackout threatens their winter farmhouse retreat. "First Winter" was first introduced at South by Southwest.

3. "The Revisionaries": a documentary about the culture wars in the public school system. This film looks at the process of revising the textbook standards of a Texas public school district and how creationists are attempting to promote Christianity in education over the "liberal agenda."

4. "Free Samples": Indie film staple Jess Weixler plays a Stanford dropout who seems to be regretting her life decisions when she's asked to hand out free ice cream samples in an ice cream truck. She meets strange customers along the way including a man who wants to take her out on a date (Jesse Eisenberg) and helps her out of her life rut.

5. "Burn": this documentary from executive producer Denis Leary offers a peek inside the lives and community of Detroit's firefighters.

Mansome-Spurlock-Bateman-Arnett6. "Mansome": "Supersize Me" director Morgan Spurlock makes his fourth big screen documentary about the increasing trend of metrosexual men in the U.S. Producers Jason Bateman and Will Arnett also offer insight into the metrosexual- or "man handsome"- way of life along with other funnymen.

7. "Take This Waltz": Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen play a loving married couple who get involved in a complicated situation when Williams falls for the new neighbor played by Luke Kirby. Comedienne Sarah Silverman has a quiet and mature co-starring performance as Williams' confidante.

8. "Deadfall": This Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde thriller is all about two siblings running from the law and how their lives are intertwined with a young boxer (Charlie Hunnam) and his parents played by Sissy Spacek and Kris Kristofferson

9. "Polisse": French actress/director Maïween plays Melissa, a photographer who documents the lives and cases of the Child Protection Unit in Paris.

10. "The Playroom": A mixture of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" and another play "August: Osage County," this new film looks at a 1970s family party who, as they drink, stop with pleasantries and confront their different dysfunctions. The film stars Oscar nominee John Hawkes

Trishna-Freida-Pinto-Tribeca-2012Honorable Mentions: the romantic dramedy "Lola Versus", the "Tess of D'Ubervilles" remake in India "Trishna", the prescription medicine documentary "Off Label", the lighthearted baseball documentary "Knuckleball!", and the comedy "Struck by Lightning" written by and starring Golden Globe winning "Glee" actor Chris Colfer

Average Joes and Janes are finding a new way to make bank in Hollywood: Harnessing their bedroom's star power.

Producers will shell out hundreds of dollars to homeowners willing to open their well-decorated doors for print and film shoots, the New York Times' Elizabeth A. Harris reports.

In popular filming cities like New York, residents can make up to $2,000 per shoot by signing up their pads with casting agencies that cater solely to living spaces. (Of course every agents gets their cut  – up to 25 percent in most cases.)

“I do it mostly because it’s free money, and because I have two kids who go to (private school),” Brooklyn resident Merle Williams-Adkins told the Times. You can see her brownstone featured in Judd Apatow's "Friends With Kids" and the yet-to-be-released "Bachelorette."

Here Are The 13 Most Liked Celebrities On Facebook

$

taylor-swift-katy-perry-rihanna-megan-foxBrangelina, Alec Baldwin and Demi Moore may own the media airwaves, but they're not buzzing on Facebook.

If you think you know the most popular celebrities on the social media venue—think again. The majority of popular celebrities on Facebook include ... singers. Among the top 13 celebrity timelines, only two actors appear.

Even more surprising may be the huge names left off the list.

Oops, Britney Spears didn't make the cut. While the singer's band page may have more than 18 million likes, her actual Facebook timeline has less than ten percent of that figure with nearly 1.8 million followers.

Jay-Z (13.6 million likes), Justin Timberlake (15.3 million) and Nicki Minaj (17.9 million) didn't make the list either.

We noticed the most liked pages share a few commonalities: easy access to music (if available), celebrity paraphernalia for sale and personal messages—along with photos—from the stars. The best timelines also include live playlists to listen to star's tracks.

You'll never guess who holds the number one spot. And, no, it's not Beyoncé, Lady Gaga or Rihanna.

13. Taylor Swift: 30,410,365 (Joined: November 3, 2007)

WHY IT WORKS: Personal photos and statuses from the singer, plus hilarious photos of her cat, Meredith, with the option to hear live tracks. Swift also showcases her fragrance, Wonderstruck.

12. Vin Diesel: 31,589,884 (Joined: March 30, 2009) He doesn't believe in cover photos. Diesel's all about branding his own welcome page.

MEET MAYHEM: The Man Who Made Insurance Interesting (ALL)

mayhem-gps

When Allstate's marketing chief, Mark LaNeve, resigned "for personal reasons" in February it left much of the ad industry wondering if the brand's star spokesman, Mayhem, would be going with him.

Since the Mayhem campaign was launched in June 2010, he has been an industry favorite and loved by consumers, who find the mischievous character hilarious.

In the first year of the campaign, Allstate's CEO, Thomas Wilson, thought that Mayhem was helping move business. "It's working. If you look at our quotes and our new business, it's way up," he said on an earnings call in early 2011.

But at the time of LaNeve's resignation, Allstate was losing market share and revenue from property-liability insurance premiums was flat in 2011, at $25.9 billion.

The campaign, which was edgy and entertaining for a financial services client, seemed to overshadow the very product it was trying to sell.

But while Mayhem may not have brought the success that Allstate hoping for, Dean Winters has reaped the rewards of his dark comedic performance.

The actor, who declined to be interviewed, has been on a steady stream of TV shows since the late 1990s (including 30 Rock). But he often talks about the decision to play the destructive Mayhem as one of the best he has ever made.

Although he joked with Ad Age in 2011, "I wanted to become an actor so I didn't have to put on a suit and sell insurance."

Dean Gerard Winters was born July 20, 1964, in New York City.

He grew spent his early childhood in Long Island with his father, his former-model/dancer mother, two younger brothers, and his younger sister. Winters spent the majority of his formative years, however, in Arizona.

Winters is of Irish and Italian descent.

And he is fluent in Italian.

His brothers are also in the entertainment business.

Scott Winters is also an actor. Besides starring in several popular TV shows, he is best know as the guy who Matt Damon asked, "How do ya like them apples?" in Good Will Hunting.

Brad Winters is a TV writer and producer.
