davy-jones-brady-bunch

The lead singer of the Monkees, Davy Jones, has died.

The New York Times reports Jones died of a heart attack in his Indiantown, Fla. home. He was 66.

Jones was part of the monumental Beatles-eque pop group assembled for the television show of the same name. However, the band became quite popular when Neil Diamond and Tommy Boyce wrote songs for the group.

Among Jones' hits, he is known for "I'm a Believer," "It Ain't Me Babe," and Rainy Jane."

He also guest-starred as himself on a popular episode of "The Brady Bunch." Watch the clip below.

It's hard to believe, but  "The Colbert Report" has already been on the air for 1000 shows.

Last night, Stephen Colbert announced his show's landmark episode via Twitter

Since the parody news show began on Comedy Central in 2005, it's been filled with one gag after another from zany "Word of the Day" segments to friendly rival competitions with "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart.

We've compiled ten funny memorable moments from over the years. Honorable mentions include Colbert breaking down terrorism for children and mulling over Facebook's ability to tag brands in photos.

If we missed anything, share your favorites.

August 2005: Stephen Colbert Has A Dance Battle with Rain

Stephen Colbert singing Rebecca Black's "Friday." The entire Stephen Colbert / Jimmy Fallon saga is epic, so it was hard to pick just one. Their odd TV bromance rivals that of Ben Affleck and other late night host, Jimmy Kimmel.

Colbert has had great segments of "The Word" in which he breaks down the definition of a select lexeme for viewers. Remember the 1%? One of our our all-time favorites includes "truthiness."

A single hire can turn around an organization.

Game-changer hires include product visionaries, a whistleblower CEO, campaign wizards, outstanding coaches and more. Many started in the middle of the recession and were able to lead their organization into the recovery.

Our list includes hires from the past three years with a proven positive impact.

Abby Rogers, Gus Lubin, Kim Bhasin, Tony Manfred, Aimee Groth and Julie Zeveloff contributed to this list.

Dan Akerson

CEO, G.M.

Since taking the lead of the automaker in 2010, Akerson has eliminated nearly 30 internal boards and committees to speed up the company's decision-making process.

After the government launched an investigation into the Chevy Volt, Akerson and his cadre of executives took the unusual step of offering affected customers free loaner cars for the duration of the investigation.

The company posted full-year top line results of $150.3 billion in 2011, an 11 percent gain over the previous year.

Frances Allen

CMO, Denny's

Allen had previously worked for big brands like Dunkin' Donuts, Pepsi, Sony, and Frito-Lay before coming to Denny's to head up its marketing in July 2010.

Denny's stayed strong during a tough economy, and Allen's marketing strategy played no small part. She refocused the Denny's image to appeal to customers as a diner rather than a full-service restaurant.

Allen also added a value proposition for diners with the $2-4-6-8 menu and marketed the brand's every day affordability aggressively, which has been a big success during the economic downturn.

Jesse Benton and John Tate

Campaign Chairman, Campaign Manager, Ron Paul 2012 Campaign

Smart tactics by Benton and Tate kept underdog Ron Paul in the GOP race longer than most people expected.

In caucus states, the tightly organized campaign is pursuing a patient strategy that may allow them to win delegates even without winning the initial votes.

They've also led an impressive voter drive. When the GOP called off polling in early February in Maine's Washington County, Tate fired back, claiming the party was scared that Paul would win.

Meet The Brand Mascots America Hates Most

$
0

mr-sixFrom the Old Spice Guy to Progressive's Flo, brand spokescharacters can become household names in their own right and help make their brands leaders in their industries.

But there is a fine line between brand mascots getting your attention and being annoying and creepy. The truth is that there are far fewer brand mascots that we like than we dislike.

Even the some of America's oldest and most well-known brand spokescharacters aren't liked all that much. At least that's what E-Poll Market Research—whose E-Score© Character service ranks characters on awareness, appeal, and other attributes—found when they surveyed 1,500 people, aged 13 to 49, about 1,600 well-known characters.

To discover which mascots are the least favorite, E-Poll first asks respondents whether they know a specific character. If they do, they are then asked whether they like or dislike the mascot, and to classify what other adjectives they would use to describe the character.

Characters were ranked by the percentage of respondents who disliked them.

10. Geico's Money You Save (37% Disliked)

Geico already had their Gecko and Caveman mascots firmly in place when they decided to bring on this odd character: a stack of bills with eyes. 37% of respondents disliked the little guy, despite the fact that his theme song is the Rockwell classic "Somebody's Watching Me."

So what didn't people like about him? Most people thought he was just boring.

9. Domino's The Noid (38% Disliked)

Dominos brought back The Noid—their spokescharacter from the 1980s—last summer to star in a video game on Facebook.

While they were hoping that their retro nod would make customers nostalgic, it seems that most respondents weren't so charmed. In fact, more than half of respondents described The Noid as annoying.

8. Esurance's Erin (39% Disliked)

Despite most people describing Esurance's Erin as sexy, she is still one of the most disliked characters of the 1600 in E-Poll's database.

Apple's TV Will Be 'The Biggest Thing In Consumer Electronics Since The Smartphone'—Munster (AAPL)

apple tv set side

Apple analyst Gene Munster was on Bloomberg Radio with Tom Keene and Ken Pruitt yesterday.

He added more details about what he expects from Apple's forthcoming TV, which he (and we) expect will be announced in the fall.

  • Apple's TV "is real"
  • "It will be the biggest thing in consumer electronics since the smartphone" [That's a huge statement considering the launch of the iPad and considering that Munster is not given to hyperbole]
  • "It's going to live up to some of the building hype"
  • Munster's betting the TV will be announced this year and will then freeze the TV market for 5 months while everyone waits for it to actually come out
  • The really innovative parts of it will be "the design of the TV" and "the way consumers consume content." "Based on that, it's going to be exciting for consumers."
  • It "will look different" than a normal TV—"Imagine just a sheet of glass"—"no edges or bevels."
  • Voice control will be "one of the ways" to control the TV, but "a lot of people still like channel surfing and being couch potatoes and Apple will still allow you to do that. It will allow you to do both of those—and I think that's the code that Steve Jobs said he had cracked in his biography."

Previously, Munster has predicted that Apple's TV will sell for $1,600, about twice the price of a standard TV. He also thinks it will come in several different sizes.

Exciting!

Megan Fox

Here's what we know: Megan Denise Fox is a 25-year-old former "Transformers" hottie who is married to ex-"90210" star Brian Austin Green, 38, and stepmother to his 10-year-old son.

But there is still so much we don't know about Fox, the mysterious starlet who usually stays out of the spotlight unless it's on a red carpet promoting her latest film or flaunting her toned body on the beach.

But Manhattan Magazine interviewed Fox, whose movie "Friends with Kids" comes out next week, and uncovered some interesting, unknown facts about the actress.

And she isn't your typical Hollywood girl.

She Goes To Church.

Religion remains a central pillar in Fox’s life; she regularly attends an L.A. church that she says is “not judgmental, does not close its doors to anybody, and has a young, active, passionate congregation, which is how I like to experience church.”

Favorite TV Show.

“Surely you know one of my favorite shows is Ancient Aliens?” referring to the History Channel series that posits theories of past human-extraterrestrial contact.

There’s also her fascination with ancient civilizations, stemming from her introduction to ancient Egypt in the Bible. “I would love to go on a dig!...You don’t think everything that’s learned is released to the public, do you?"

Favorite Comic Books.

"Gen 13" a series about a team of five superpowered teenagers and their mentor, and "Witchblade" a series in which a tough-as-nails female NYPD homicide detective gains powers via the possession of a supernatural artifact.

Fox is also currently involved in the film development of "Fathom" a series by her favorite artist, the late Michael Turner, who created and drew several issues of "Witchblade."

6 Fascinating Charts On The Future Of The Adult Entertainment Business

$

stripper heels

XBiz, the trade newswire for the adult entertainment industry, just released its 2012 market research report.

Don't laugh, this is serious business: Sales are thought to be $14 billion a year, although that number is murky because so many companies are privately held.

And media and marketing executives know that the porn industry tends to precede the mainstream market in the adoption of new technologies and distribution methods: VHS tapes weren't widely adopted until after the adult business began selling movies in that format. Same with DVD. Porn also pioneered e-commerce on the web.

The next frontier for porn appears to be web TV, according to the XBiz survey. Top executives such as  Hustler president Michael Klein and Wasteland owner Colin Rowntree expect usage to increase as soon as companies like Google or Apple figure out a way for viewers to switch easily between regular TV and web video. Interestingly, the industry is highly skeptical of 3D movies.

The report is based on a survey of "6,000 adult entertainment industry executives and qualified stakeholders," XBiz says,  including "operators of leading adult websites, content producers and licensers, distributors and wholesalers, models and performers, retailers, payment processors, software and IT providers, mobile-solution providers, industry media and associations, providers of legal, marketing and consulting services, traffic vendors and ad networks, and providers of other industry-related products and services."

You can download a full copy of the report here.

3D Porn is not expected to be big.

The report says Hustler Video has already developed a line of 3D movies (including This Ain't Avatar XXX 3D) and has teamed with Funky Monkey Media which only process 3D adult video.

Scott Taylor, president of New Sensations, told Xbiz:

"In terms of saleability on DVD, I have not seen a sufficient demand to warrant a substantial budget. Generally people simply don’t look that good naked — well, close up at least."

"The content of the material will be the driving factor over the gimmicks. Make a better movie and the world will beat a path to your door. The novelty hasn’t worn off on broadcast. I think that drives some studios to make 3D products. But in hard goods, I am not excited by its current potential. That said, I would, love to make a 3D fully interactive product."

The mandatory condom rule is unpopular and regarded as unenforceable.

Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment:

"Our position remains the same. We are a condom-optional company and we believe the current testing procedure works or we would absolutely mandate condoms."

The new .XXX top-level domain is regarded as an unnecessary burden.

Michael Klein, president of Hustler:

"My answer is no, I do not see the value and I do not support .XXX. We have been very vocal in our feelings about .XXX, which we feel all it does is cause an unnecessary financial burden to adult companies having to regis- ter all their domains under .XXX at ridiculously high prices whereas there is no value as consumers can easily find what they want at any .com site. This also leads to the risk of politicians forcing adult websites into this .XXX ghetto and then setting up structures to block all such sites from cities, states or even countries. The only one who benefits from .XXX is ICM."

This comes on the heels of Cohen's red carpet shenanigans where he dumped supposed ashes of Kim Jong Il all over Ryan Seacrest's tuxedo.

Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures said the following:

“Sacha is a comic genius. A wildly talented writer, actor and filmmaker. Beyond that, he is the rare global comedy star. On behalf of all of us at Paramount, we welcome Sacha and look forward to The Dictator and many more great pictures for years to come."

Everything You Need To Know About 'The Hunger Games' Before Its Release This Month

Hunger Games

It's March 1st and you know what that means... it's "Hunger Games" month!

Tickets for the "The Hunger Games" are now on sale and the film has already broken an industry record. Advance ticket sales on Fandango are the highest they've ever been for the ticket-buying site.

Now the almighty powers in charge of the film have launched a full-scale twitter campaign to attract more viewers to the movie, if that was even possible.

Lionsgate has announced possible advanced screenings for the film in 24 cities. But in order to get the screening to actually happen, there have to be enough tweets in support of the cities from the public.

So in honor of the trilogy and this new twitter challenge, here's a look at everything you need to know before watching the upcoming film releasing on March 23rd (or earlier if your city is one of the coveted screening locales).

If you haven't already met the cast, do that now.

But then come back! There's more to their characters and the plot than meets the eye.

Don't worry, no spoilers allowed!

What's it all about?

"The Hunger Games" follows Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, as a young girl who is forced to fight to the death against 23 other teenagers in a dystopian society called Panem.

The society is divided into 12 Districts and each must submit two "tributes" to fight in the annual Hunger Games.

Katniss volunteers as "tribute" for the games after her sister, Primrose, is originally chosen for the female spot. She is set to fight with (and against) her fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mallark.

Katniss is good with arrows and due to her father dying in a mining accident, she is a survivor and the main provider for her family.

There are three main characters.

Now that you know Katniss, here are the other two major characters:

Peeta Mallark (Josh Hutcherson): the male tribute in the games. Peeta and Katniss are not close in District 12 but they do know each other from a young age due to an incident in which Peeta unknowingly saves Katniss' life.

Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth): Katniss' best friend from childhood. The two grew very close after they both lost family members in the District 12 mining accident. After Katniss volunteers for the Hunger Games, she tells Gale to take care of her family in case she dies.

But know these names, too.

Primrose Everdeen (Willow Shields): Katniss' sister. She was originally chosen as "tribute" until Katniss steps in. Prim is very good at healing those who are sick. She is also the one person Katniss would do anything to protest.

Rue (Amandla Stenbrg): A young tribute from District 11. Rue is small and "birdlike" and reminds Katniss of her sister. The two form an alliance in the games.

Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson): Katniss and Peeta's mentor for the Hunger Games. He won the games many years before and is now a drunken mess.

Cinna (Lenny Kravitz): Katniss' stylist for the games. But there's much more to him than what is seen.

Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks): Effie is the pink-haired scary looking lady from the trailers. She is chosen as the District 12 chaperon and chooses the tributes for the games.

President Snow (Donald Sutherland): The villain. Snow is the leader of Panem and the reason behind the intensity of the Hunger Games. But he comes to be much more evil than that for Katniss.

This trailer is seriously NSFW.

Adam Sandler and "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg team up for a seriously raunchy comedy about a man who must reconnect with his estranged son in order to get money to pay off his taxes.

Sandler re-enters his wealthy son's life just as he is about to get married to Leighton Meester's prim and proper character.

Samberg recently told MTV News that he was psyched to play Sandler's son as he's been a fan of the comedian his entire life.

Let's see if that love makes for some good father-son bromancing.

Check out the trailer below, but warning: it's the complete opposite of family friendly.

Chrysler made a game-time decision to run model Catrinel Menghia's sexy "Seduction" Fiat ad, which went viral last November, during the Super Bowl 2012 instead of a commercial that they had filmed with self-proclaimed "warlock" Charlie Sheen.

While Jalopnik reports that "House Arrest"—a tribute to Sheen's whackadoo behavior—was deemed "too-hot-for-the-Super-Bowl," we were underwhelmed. The ad focuses on Sheen racing a Fiat around his mansion as truckloads of goddess-like woman coo in approval. Zoom into Sheen's ankle tracking device as he asks a hot model what he gets for good behavior.

Winning? Not really. You know something's wrong if GoDaddy has an edgier ad than you do. Good call going with the Menghia spot.

Why You Need To Watch NBC's 'Awake' Premiere Tonight

awake-ad

Midseason TV has officially arrived and with that means new shows to watch and judge.

NBC is currently is fourth place and not necessarily known for being the most popular network, but the peacock has taken a giant risk with their new show "Awake."

And if people can get on board with the crazy concept, they may just have a genuine hit on their hands.

We've already shown you the first seven minutes of the pilot; now it's time to watch the whole show.

The show stars "Harry Potter" actor Jason Isaacs as Peter Britten, a Los Angeles cop who has a terrible car accident one night with his wife and son in the car with him.

Here's where the premise starts to get a little crazy.

After the accident, Britten starts to experience two timelines. In one timeline, his wife (Laura Allen) has survived the crash while his son (Dylan Minette) has not. He has a partner (Wilmer Valderama) and he still solves cases while also going to a therapist (BD Wong).

But when he goes to sleep, Britten wakes up in another timeline where his son has survived while the wife has not. He has a different partner (Steve Harris) and a different shrink (Cherry Jones). Every time Britten wakes up, he's in a new timeline, and he differentiates the two with rubber bands that he wears on his wrists: red for life with his wife and green for his son.

While the plot is a bit of a head-scratcher, the pilot episode never lets viewers get too confused. The transitions between the two worlds are pretty clear—they each come with their own camera tint.

Awake-NBC-CastThe characters are also incredibly intriguing. Isaacs captivates from the start, allowing viewers to empathize with him while Allen and Minette are heartbreaking as the wife and son who mourn for each other in different ways.

The therapists in both worlds tell Britten he's hallucinating and must accept one world to be real.

But Britten is so glad he can have his wife and son without dealing with the tragedy of losing one that he is willing to sacrifice his own sanity rather than having to choose between them.

And you won't want him to choose.

According to The Wrap, viewers should stick with the difficult premise. Apparently there are some pretty fantastic twists and turns coming that will be well worth any frustration from the pilot.

Are you willing to give the high-concept show a chance? Check out the pilot tonight at 10/9c.

Or watch the entire episode on demand now at NBC.com or on Hulu Plus

These 2 Charts Show How The Simple Act Of Watching TV Is Dying In The U.S. (TWC, DISH, T, VZ)

$

0

Wooly Mammoth

I argued recently that cable TV faces the same extinction threat as the hard-wired telephone, as consumers show less interest in watching shows on a television in favor of DVDs, iPads and other internet video streaming sources.

My argument caused some controversy, which I'll address with the two charts below.

On Feb. 28, I pulled a chart from an ISI analyst's note that showed a loss of 2.3 million cable TV subscribers since the beginning of 2010. The hurting companies included Time Warner Cable and Dish.

I got some heated feedback from that, after some people pointed out that I underplayed the fact that when you add in video subscriber gains from satellite TV and telcos like Verizon the actual number of subscribers paying for delivery of video has risen in the last two years.

Fair enough: It's true that the total universe of subscribers is growing slightly. But when you separate out the cable TV video subscribers from the people buying satellite TV or broadband video service from a telco, then a stark divergence emerges between the fate of cable TV and broadband service generally: Cable TV is in decline, whereas satellite and telco video provision is growing.

Cable is a declining priority for consumers

In my opinion, what this means is that cable TV is a declining priority for people subscribing to broadband service. More people are buying "triple-play" bundles of web, TV and phone service. In that bundle, web access is probably their No. 1 priority. (Imagine how quickly you'd go crazy if you didn't have the internet at home!)

Cable is becoming like telephone service in a triple-play bundle: That vestigial thing you buy only because it's cheaply priced and you still use it occasionally. Web access—and your ability to watch the shows when you want—is the key.

First, here is the quarterly breakdown of new video subscription gains over the last two years, prepared by One Touch Intelligence, a media research company. The numbers are broken down so you can see which industries are succeeding and which are not.

Cable TV video subscribers, who comprise the biggest sector, have only declined. There has been a net loss of 3.5 million cable video subscribers in the last two years.

Satellite has held steady. The telcos have made healthy gains, probably because of their broadband web access offers:

cable tv

Now here's the total universe of all subscribers. There have been gains, but the gains have weakened over time:

cable tv

Bottom line: I'm sticking to my argument that watching TV, as we know it, is dying.

FASHION GONE TOO FAR: 16-Year Old Model Appears In Choke-Hold For Shoot With Nude Porn Star

hailey clauson strangle

Perhaps in a bid to win the most inappropriate use of an underage model award, photographer Tyrone Lebon and stylist Max Pearmain posed 16-year old Hailey Clauson in a particularly disturbing fashion spread for Pop magazine.

The shoot went above and beyond the usual provocative-in-the-name-of-fashion poses and actually depicted Clauson getting choked by an anonymous man.

Clauson was photographed posing with a nude porn star named "Destiny" in the same spread. Pearlman has posted photos on his blog.

A newcomer to the fashion world, Clauson has posed for Gucci, Versace, Miu Miu, and Vogue Italia (to name a few) prior to her 16th birthday.

The model's young age has also been the forefront of a separate scandal. In August of this year, Clauson's parents filed a suit against photographer Jason Lee Parry and Urban Outfitters for producing a tee-shirt with provocative photos of Hailey.

According to the lawsuit:

"She is posed in a blatantly salacious manner with her legs spread, without a bra, revealing portions of her breasts... The image of Teen in a spread eagle position making her crotch area the focal point of the image may portray a child in a sexually suggestive manner and may be in violation of one or more federal and/or state laws."

Other images showed pubic hair. The pictures were taken one week after Clauson's 15th birthday.
