Here's Why Justin Bieber's New Debit Card Is Not A Total Rip-Off

$
0
0

Justin BieberPrepaid debit cards are the new celebrity fragrance.

In the past two years, we've seen stars like the Kardashian sisters, Suze Orman, Russel Simmons, and George Lopez all plaster their faces on plastic.

For the most part, even their famous mugs weren't enough to win over personal finance critics, who have widely panned prepaid debit cards for their bevy of hidden usage fees.

Teen pop sensation Justin Bieber most recently tapped into the industry. He's earning $3.75 million to market the new SpendSmart Card, which targets tweens.

When we first reviewed the card in January, we were pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't as bad as we feared. In fact, for parents willing to take a gamble on prepaid debit cards to teach their kids how to manage money, it may have a lot to offer.

Here's the main reason why:

Yes, there are fees. But they actually pay for something.

Like all prepaid debit cards, Bieber's SpendSmart card comes with its fair share of fees –– including a $3.95 monthly usage fee, a $1.50 ATM fee, and a $7.95 replacement fee, to name a few.

But unlike other cards, which are basically charging you for the privilege of letting them store your cash, parents are actually getting something in return here.

The card not only lets parents get text alerts every time their kid swipes their card, but they can also set up recurring deposits to the account, track their spending from their smartphone, lock and unlock the card whenever they want, and block the card from working at certain retailers (say, a liquor store or bar).

This card could certainly be a useful tool for parents looking to teach their kids to manage money, especially if they don't quite trust them to handle their own bank account yet.

That being said, it's always wise to exhaust all of your other options first. Try a web tool like Tykoon, perhaps. For free, it lets you track your child's allowance and makes sure kids save and donate a portion of their earnings each month.

There are also cheaper prepaid debit cards on the market. Cardhub.com and Nerdwallet.com are great resources if you're looking to compare the benefits between different cards.

And, of course, there's always the safest route of all –– opening an actual checking or savings account on your kid's behalf and coaching them on your own.

James Van Der Beek's Ad For HTC's New Phone Is Pretty Dismal

Funny or Die and Turner have come together to create a three-minute comedy sketch starring James Van Der Beek to plug the new HTC One phone.

HTC CEO Peter Chou believes that the company's marketing strategy, or lack thereof, was responsible for its ill-performing year. And thus a spoof of the Bachelorette, in which a woman must decide between a brick phone, landline, and HTC One as her future "mate," was born.

Unfortunately the ad is pretty lackluster.

An edited version will play on TBS and TBS.com, Adult Swim and AdultSwim.com, and truTV and truTV.com.

US Congressman Says He Intentionally Wrote Deleted Flirty Tweets To Cyndi Lauper As Part Of A Ruse

$

U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) said Friday he intentionally tweeted a couple of flirty, now-deleted tweets to singer Cyndi Lauper in which he called her "hot."

Cohen told reporters at a scheduled press conference that he wrote the tweets in a planned ruse on reporters and on the Sunlight Foundation.

The website Politwoops, which is run by the Sunlight Foundation, captured Cohen's two tweets to Lauper that he subsequently deleted. Cohen composed the tweets after seeing Lauper perform on Tuesday at the White House's Memphis Soul event on Tuesday.

Cohen also sparked a stir from a deleted tweet in February, when he tweeted an acronym for "I love you" at a model on Twitter who he subsequently revealed was his daughter.

"Two months ago, my family was personally hurt and victimized by sensationalized, fact-less speculation masquerading as journalism," Cohen said on Friday. "I hope this serves to bring attention to the need for journalistic integrity."

Here are the tweets he sent out to Lauper:

STeve Cohen Cyndi Lauper tweets

Steve Cohen Cyndi Lauper tweets

Here's a sampling of what he told reporters on Friday — thanks to Politico's Kate Nocera, who dutifully covered the press conference:

Steve Cohen

And here's Cohen's full statement:

“On Tuesday night, the President and Mrs. Obama, along with the Grammys and PBS, hosted a musical tribute to Memphis Soul at the White House.  Wanting to promote this great program, which will air this coming Tuesday on PBS, I realized the best way to do this was to tweet and delete.  I knew the Sunlight Foundation would highlight the deleted tweet as a Politwoop and knowing how some in the media report deleted Politwoops as nefarious, it occurred to me that a perfectly innocent, factually-correct tweet, once deleted, would receive great media attention.  And that is exactly what happened ...

“The night at the White House was great, I was amazed at Cyndi Lauper’s hot performance and I look forward to seeing her performance of “Try a Little Tenderness” again when it airs next Tuesday on PBS. That’s what the tweet said but that’s not how it has been speciously interpreted in the media.

“For two months, I’ve had in my mind the movie Absence of Malice, the first screenplay by Kurt Luedtke, a former reporter.  The movie highlights the damage done to persons, albeit with a legal absence of malice, because of sloppy, “gotcha” journalism.

“Laura Kirchner, a former Columba Journalism Review assistant editor, wrote that as a first semester student in journalism school, she was assigned the 1981 Sydney Pollack film Absence of Malice by one of the professors of the required Ethics course.   As Ms. Kirchner states in a July 15, 2011 article, the reporter played by Sally Field “forgets she’s talking to actual people, people who will have to live with the effects of what she writes about them.”

“Two months ago, my family was personally hurt and victimized by sensationalized, fact-less speculation masquerading as journalism.  I hope this serves to bring attention to the need for journalistic integrity as well as encouraging everyone to watch the spectacular and hot performances of Memphis music by Cyndi Lauper, as well as Justin Timberlake, William Bell, Steve Cropper, Sam Moore, Booker T. Jones, Queen Latifah, Ben Harper, Charlie Musselwhite, Eddie Floyd, Alabama Shakes, Joshua Ledet, and Mavis Staples on PBS next Tuesday evening.”

17 Celebrities Who've Run Into Trouble With The IRS

$
0
0

lindsay lohan on david lettermanWe're far from the ideal democracy described by Noam Chomsky, in which ordinary citizens feel involved in policy decisions and happily fund the society they've built together.

We live, instead, in an "US Weekly" world, where the lives of celebrities command as much attention as the workings of government, if not more. And stars are indeed like us, only more so, in their alienation from communal enterprise – if a reluctance to pay taxes is any indication.

A USA Today report, "Celebrities are often in debt to the tax man," was somewhat sympathetic to the plight of famous tax delinquents, explaining that "celebrities and entertainers -- unlike most taxpayers -- often have huge incomes that vary wildly from year to year,"  an easy setup for tax trouble.

A review of famous names recently in the papers for owing the IRS turns up a few patterns. Tax scofflaw celebrities aren't usually the sort of figures known as A-Listers – or, if they are, like Lil Wayne, they tend to be somewhere past their prime. Rap, reality television, and claims of financial mismanagement by others also recur. There's a significant amount of marital trouble in these lives as well. Click through for our complete gallery.

(Hat tip to Accounting Today, which keeps a running tally of "Celebrity Tax Foibles.")

1. Lindsey Vonn

In April 2012, The Detroit News reported that skiing star Vonn and her estranged husband Thomas owed $1,705,437 in taxes from 2010, the year Vonn took Olympic gold in downhill at Vancouver. Vonn sounded genuinely surprised and moved quickly to settle the debt.

"This is an important lesson for me," she said in a Facebook post. "Not being in control of my finances and relying on someone else who you believed had your best interest at heart was a mistake"— an allusion to Vonn's husband, according to The Christian Post — "and one I will not make twice."

Vonn is currently dating Tiger Woods, so everything should be fine now.

2. Stephen Baldwin

The star of The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000) and Celebrity Big Brother 2010 was arrested in December 2012 and charged with failing to pay more than $350,000 in New York state income taxes; Baldwin apparently failed to file in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

By pleading guilty to one count of repeated failure to file -- a class "E" felony -- Baldwin avoided prison time. He has already paid the state $100,000 in restitution and has agreed to shell out an additional $300,000 before his sentencing on July 19, 2013.

3. Ja Rule (Jeffrey Atkins)

Ja was sentenced to two years in prison on an illegal gun charge in late 2010, and in July 2011 he received an additional 28 month sentence for having failed to pay taxes on $3 million between 2004 and 2006. The judge allowed him to serve his terms concurrently; he is set to be released on July 28.

Ja denied intentional wrongdoing on the tax evasion front. "I in no way attempted to deceive the government or do anything illegal," he said in court, according to BET. "I was a young man who made a lot of money .... I didn't know how to deal with these finances, and I didn't have people to guide me, so I made mistakes."

Comedy Icon Jonathan Winters Dies At 87

Jonathan Winters, iconic improviser and comedic performer, died of natural causes at home in Montecito, CA today.

He's probably most known for his performance as Robin Williams's son in "Mork and Mindy," but Winters was first and foremost a comedic improviser who helped shape the direction of American humor. He dipped his toe in the comedy world when he started going way off script at his job as a radio DJ, doing impressions and taking phone calls (Winters would often imitate both ends of the "phone conversation").

His humor carried him from there to movies and television. He would go on to write a book and see modest success as a painter. Here he is in his prime on The Jack Paar Show, performing one of his more memorable sets.

This Is The 'Rape' Song That Got Rick Ross Fired By Reebok

Reebok just fired rapper Rick Ross for releasing a new song that happily describes his plans to drug and rape someone.

Here's the problematic verse (emphasis is ours) from "U.O.E.N.O":

That n**** sold you that re-rock, you ain't even know it
I die over these Reeboks, you ain't even know it
Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it
I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it

Alluding to date rape right after plugging the shoe company you have an endorsement deal with perhaps isn't the best way to keep a job.

Here's the song. The problems start at the 2:05 mark.

There Was A School Shooting On 'Glee' Last Night

glee shooting star

Last night's episode of "Glee" hit close to home for many.

The Fox series revolved around a potential school shooting.

The episode, "Shooting Star," comes nearly five months after last year's December school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut left 28 dead.

CNN reported the school's superintendent sent out a letter warning parents of the episode's content

The controversial episode features the "Glee" gang hanging out in the choir room when a shot is heard. Pan to images of empty locked doors, empty windows, and students running and screaming down the hallway.

The majority of the episode is pretty tame with the audience viewing the events unfold from inside the choir room with the majority of the cast.

At one point someone tries to enter the room, scurrying in the halls and a second shot is heard.

After that, a SWAT team member is seen clearing rooms and escorting students out of the building.

The episode never shows any blood shed or lives lost.

One of the students, Becky (Lauren Jackson), ended up bringing her father's gun to school because of her fear of leaving high school after graduation.

Instead, Coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) ended up taking blame for the incident claiming the gun was her own and accidentally went off. In turn, her character was fired.

Lynch has been set to leave "Glee" for some time as she will be joining the Broadway cast of "Annie" as Miss Hannigan in May.

It's kind of a dramatic turn of events for a character exit.

The episode didn't hurt the series at all.

Rather, the show saw a bump in the ratings with 6.8 million viewers.  The last new episode, airing three weeks ago, was watched by 5.9 million.

Earlier today, Fox's GLEE Twitter handle tweeted out the following asking if last night's episode made viewer's hearts race.

The full episode won't be able to view online until next week.

Watch a clip from the episode below via CNN:

Newtown Parents Blast 'Glee' For School Shooting Episode

"Glee" caused a stir Thursday night with an episode that depicted a school shooting, something that hit much too close to home for some families in Newtown, Conn., less than four months after the horrific massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Ahead of the episode, the Newtown Action Alliance, a grassroots group formed in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, posted a message on its Facebook page that urged Newtown residents not to watch the episode.

"According to someone who blogs for an Internet site that is a TV spoiler site, the TV show, 'Glee' that airs tonight on Fox is going to depict a school shooting from the vantage point of the students hiding in the dark," read the message, which was attributed to a "Newtown organization.

"He said it is extremely harrowing and it even freaked him out and he's not from here. I would suggest if you do watch this TV show to either not watch it tonight or watch with caution."

Newtown parent Andrew Paley, a parent of two survivors of the shooting, said on CNN Friday morning that he was shocked at the episode.

"We have no problem, at least the parents I've spoken to, that they aired an episode that had a school shooting. It's reality. It happened. It happened here. It happened at Columbine. It happened in many other places," Paley said.

"What's really upsetting is that no one, none of the producers, reached out to the town of Newtown to let us residents who were so close to this know that this episode was airing. ... It would have just been a shocker to them if they didn't know what the episode was about."

Here's the video of Paley's appearance on CNN:

CHARLIE SHEEN: Dave Chappelle And Testosterone Creme Are To Blame For My Meltdown

Charlie Sheen made quite an entrance on "Conan" last night.

It was the actor's first time on the Warner Bros. lot in two years and he showed up on the late-night host's set in a tank with two "goddesses."

During his interview, Sheen made reference to his notorious 2010 meltdown—which he now calls a melt forward—blaming it on a combination of Dave Chappelle and testosterone creme.

The "Scary Movie 5" actor claims he suffered a ruptured hernia from laughing too hard while watching the popular "Chappelle Show" sketch about a blind white supremacist.

Sheen claimed the producers of "Two and a Half Men" thought he overdosed, and, as a result, fired him from the CBS show.

As for the testosterone creme, Sheen said he was using it in excess.

Here's Sheen's big entrance on "Conan":

And, here he is discussing the cause of his "melt-forward":

PSY 'Gentleman M/V' Video Hits Youtube, Continues The Ridiculousness

$

Psy Gentleman M/V videoThe new PSY "Gentleman M/V" video has just released Saturday on the official PSY Youtube channel.

(VIDEO BELOW)

PSY, who's "Gangnam Style" video reached a billion views, instead chose to release "Gentleman M/V" without the video, which has raised some eyebrows, considering it was the video that really hooked in viewers the first time around with Gangnam.

Gangnam Style currently has over 1.5 billion views on Youtube.

Say that out loud. One point five BILLION views on Youtube.

That is just ridiculous, and sets up PSY for possibly the biggest letdown ever when it comes to the second release of what could be the biggest one hit wonder of all history.

One thing that remains the same is that in "Gentleman M/V" PSY is most definitely back up to his goofy antics, even adding in butt scratching and whiping his hand across a girls nose. Really. Elevator guy and the man in the yellow suit are back as well.

Reddit currently has a thread going with some varied reactions.

The Best Solo Careers Of Ex-Boybanders

$

Justin Timberlake Super Bowl 2013A few days ago, rumor spread that One Direction's Harry Styles was at work on a solo album, presumably plotting his post-boy band career.

A rep for the band vehemently denies that Styles is going anywhere, and we're glad for him — most ex-boybanders don't fare too well on the charts after they fly the coop, with the exception of a few rare (and extremely handsome) gentlemen.

Not everyone can be Justin Timberlake.

13. Howie Dorough (Backstreet Boys)

An opening gig for Britney Spears on her European tour couldn't get people excited about "Back to Me," the debut album from the Backstreet Boys' Howie Dorough. Maybe he should have released that Latin album he'd been talking about.

Watch his music video for "100," here.

12. Joe Jonas (Jonas Brothers)

Joe Jonas' debut solo album "Fastlife" was originally slated to drop around the same time as his ex-girlfriend Demi Lovato's "Unbreakable," but its release was pushed back after the singles "See No More" and "Just in Love" failed to catch steam.

The album only charted for two weeks, which may have led Jonas to cut ties with Hollywood Records.

Here's his video for "See No More."

11. Brian Littrell (Backstreet Boys)

It's a little unfair to compare Brian Littrell's debut solo album "Welcome Home" to his pop contemporaries', as his is the lone Christian album among them. It performed very well by Christian rock standards, with over 100,000 copies sold, but didn't get much mainstream attention.

This Heroic Startup (And Barry Diller) Are Standing Up To Your Goliath Cable Company

$
0
0

michelangelo david

"HOW many people here love their cable company?" Chet Kanojia, the boss of Aereo, an internet TV start-up, posed that question to an audience recently. Only one man raised his hand--and he worked for one. Mr Kanojia started Aereo in 2012 to capitalise on people's hatred of high cable bills. For as little as $80 a year, his firm allows subscribers in New York city to record programmes and watch live broadcasts over the internet. Aereo rents each subscriber a fingernail-sized antenna, which it houses in a warehouse in Brooklyn.

Television companies loathe Aereo. It does not pay networks for the free-to-air channels it streams. It allows people to receive content without paying for the bundles of channels from which cable firms derive their profits. Broadcasters have sued Aereo for copyright infringement and filed a request to shut down the service (this was denied on appeal on April 1st).

"Aereo is stealing our signal," grumbled Chase Carey, the president of News Corporation, which owns Fox, a broadcast network, on April 8th. Mr Carey has threatened that if Aereo continues, Fox could turn itself into a cable channel and charge viewers for carriage. Haim Saban, the chairman of Univision, a Spanish-language broadcaster, has said the same.

Why does a one-year-old firm with an undisclosed number of subscribers make media moguls so agitated? Aereophobes see Mr Kanojia's firm as a pesky parasite that flouts copyright law and profits from distributing content that it does not pay for. Supporters point out these are free-to-air networks, and say Aereo has designed a clever and legal technology to give customers what they want: the ability to watch live programmes and recordings cheaply, and on devices other than a TV set.

Aereo has started to hurt big media firms' share prices. On April 1st, after the networks' request for an injunction was denied, the share prices of some big media firms, such as CBS, dipped (although they later recovered a bit). The concern is that Aereo threatens a valuable source of income. "Retransmission" fees, which cable operators pay broadcast networks to carry their channels, will earn the big four broadcast networks (ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS) $1.3 billion in 2013 and as much as $3.5 billion in 2016, predicts Benjamin Swinburne of Morgan Stanley, a bank.

Aereo could spoil the party. When broadcast networks have tried to negotiate hikes to their fees in the past, they have threatened cable operators, such as Time Warner Cable or Comcast, with blackouts. Operators have caved in. But if customers have Aereo, the threat of a blackout is less grave, says Rich Greenfield, an analyst at BTIG Research, since people can watch network programmes online.

Mr Kanojia, an Indian entrepreneur, sold his previous company, which helped target advertisements to TV viewers, to Microsoft in 2008 for a reported $250m. He knew before he launched Aereo that he faced a fight. His firm has $64m in venture-capital funding, including some from Barry Diller, the feisty boss of IAC who once helped launch Fox alongside Rupert Murdoch. Now it only operates in New York city, but it plans to reach another 22 cities this year. The networks could sue in those places, but may prefer to wait for their New York case to be heard, perhaps early next year. With luck, by then the judge will "see us as pro-social", says Mr Diller.

No one knows how many people would subscribe to Aereo if given the chance. Currently it offers only broadcast channels and one cable channel (Bloomberg television). However, in the next year it could start paying to carry other cable channels and add more content. Mr Kanojia anticipates strong demand for live shows. Plenty of services, such as Netflix and Hulu, offer previously-aired content online but few offer live news and sports.

Aereo is not the only disruptive force attracting lawsuits. New technologies allow firms to do things that lawmakers never imagined. Aereo's fate will mostly depend on whether the courts deem its transmissions to constitute "private" or "public" viewing (the latter is barred by copyright law). Like "Law and Order", this courtroom drama could run and run.

CBS Chief Les Moonves Took Home $62 Million In Pay Last Year (CBS)

Les Moonves

CBS CEO Les Moonves received $62 million in compensation last year, putting him in the ranks of "media executives [who] earned almost double the pay of Wall Street chiefs whose income drew scrutiny from Congress and activists," as Bloomberg put it.

His compensation included a $20 million cash bonus for his "successes" as CEO, plus a $7.5 million cash bonus for the creation of "premium content" for CBS. The company did not describe in detail what those successes entailed, in its filing with the SEC:

With respect to Mr. Moonves' 2012 bonus, the Compensation Committee awarded to Mr. Moonves a total cash bonus amount which reflects a $20,000,000 payment for the successes in his role as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company and a special cash payment of $7,500,000 for his leadership in connection with the creation of premium content across the Company's portfolio of businesses, particularly with respect to the CBS Television Network, which outperformed its media peers in 2012.

During 2012, CBS's revenues improved only modestly, adding $452 million in revenues for a total of $14 billion, a 3% gain. The stock, however, rose 40% to ~$38 during the year.

Moonves' base salary is just $3.5 million a year. The rest of his compensation comes in the form of cash and stock bonuses. He also received $660,247 in benefits for personal use of CBS's private jet, the SEC disclosure says.

Moonves actually got poorer in 2012. In 2011, he received $70 million in total compensation.

Here's What The Lyrics To Psy's 'Gentleman M/V' Actually Mean In English

Psy Gentleman M/V video

By now you've enjoyed "Gentleman M/V," Psy's followup to his massive hit, "Gangnam Style."

And you've probably also been completely baffled by the video and the lyrics (if you don't speak Korean). The video appears to show Psy playing tricks on women he's dating, until he meets a woman who is as tricky as he is.

Except, that's not what the song is about.

Here, courtesy of PolicyMic, are the lyrics in phonetic Korean and, below that, in English. The good news is, what sounds like Psy repeatedly singing a curse word is, in fact, something else entirely.

First, the video, then the words:

MARCO RUBIO SLAMS JAY-Z: I Think He Needs To 'Get Informed' On Cuba

Fanning the flames of the Republican feud with Jay-Z, Florida Senator Marco Rubio chided the rapper Sunday over his recent trip to Cuba with wife Beyonce.

“I think Jay-Z needs to get informed," Rubio said during an interview on ABC's "This Week." "One of his heroes is Che Guevara. Che Guevara was a racist. Che Guevara was a racist that wrote extensively about the superiority of white Europeans over people of African descent, so he should inform himself on the guy that he’s propping up."

“Secondly, I think if Jay-Z was truly interested in the true state of affairs in Cuba, he would have met people that are being oppressed, including a hip-hop artist in Cuba who is right now being oppressed and persecuted and is undergoing a hunger strike because of his political lyrics,” Rubio added. “And I think he missed an opportunity. But that’s Jay-Z’s issue.”

The Washington Post's Sean Sullivan points out that Rubio was probably referring to Angel Remon Yunier Arzuaga, a jailed Cuban rapper whom the Florida Senator tweeted about last week.

Rubio's remarks are the latest Republican criticism of Jay-Z's Cuba visit, which was sanctioned by the Treasury Department. The rapper responded to the criticism last week with a new rap, titled "Open Letter."

But Rubio, a Cuban-American, said Sunday that the real problem was not Jay-Z, but the current U.S. travel policy to the island.

“The bigger point is the travel policies," he told ABC's Jon Karl. "The travel policies need to be tightened because they are being abused,” Rubio said. “These are tourist trips, and they are — what they’re doing is providing hard currency and funding so that a tyrannical regime can maintain its grip on the island of Cuba, and I think that’s wrong.”

SNL Cold Open Mocks Senate Background Check Compromise

Saturday Night Live took on the gun control compromise reached by Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), mocking the deal on background checks as a milquetoast bill that doesn't actually achieve much.

"Is this bill what we wanted? No," said Manchin, played by Jason Sudeikis. "Is it what the NRA wanted? No. But does it at least help in some small way? No."

"We are confident that this bill will pass the Senate, and it will then go to the House of Representatives, where it will then get immediately shot down," chimed in Toomey, played by Bill Hader.

"And that is not a metaphor. They will literally throw the bill up in the air and shoot it with a gun," added in Manchin.

"In summary, you're welcome."

Celebrities came out to celebrate the MTV Movie Awards in Hollywood.

From Snooki to Kim Kardashian, stars came out to to see who takes home MTV's iconic golden popcorn trophies.

It's not Oscar glam as celebrities often show up more laid back in jeans and sneakers—Kristen Stewart has showed up past years in Converse sneakers.

The ceremony strays from typical presentations with awards including Best Kiss, Best Fight, and Best Shirtless Performance.

See what the stars stepped out in for the MTV Movie Awards.

BEST: 'Jersey Shore' star Snooki looks glam in a dress, but she could have done without the lengthy extensions.

WORST: Hana Mae Lee from "Pitch Perfect" decided to detract from her dress with an oversized Alain LeFaille cigarette hat.

BEST: Alexa Vega is looking all grown up from her "Spy Kids" days.
