'Media rigging the election!': Trump slams SNL for mocking his debate performance

John Oliver: Why you really shouldn't vote third party in the election

john oliver

On Sunday's "Last Week Tonight," John Oliver addressed the disillusionment of American voters with the major-party presidential candidates by properly vetting — and dismissing — the two prominent third-party candidates: Green Party nominee Jill Stein and Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson.

"When your two main options are depressing, any third choice seems good," Oliver said. "If you’re in a KFC/Taco Bell and you see a bunch of pigeons eating something in the parking lot, you might well think, 'Hang on—what have they got over there?'"

Citing a poll that showed more than a third of young voters saying they'll vote for a third-party candidate, Oliver put forth a series of arguments that showed why, to his mind, neither Stein nor Johnson is fit for the presidency.

Stein, who's currently polling around 2 percent nationally, boasts that she would eliminate all $1.3 billion in student debt in the same "quantitative easing" manner that the government has used to bail out Wall Street — a policy she has described as a "magic trick."

Though Stein once stated in a Reddit AMA that "the president then has the authority to cancel the student debt using quantitative easing," Oliver rebuked her policy proposal as illegitimate.

"That is absolutely wrong," Oliver said. "The president does not have that authority, only the Federal Reserve does —and it does not take marching orders from the White House because that would be extremely dangerous. You don't want to give presidents the power to just create new money whenever they want it."

The "Last Week Tonight" host then turned to Gary Johnson.

"He has been polling around 6 percent nationally," Oliver said, "which is pretty remarkable, given that his race has been largely notable for moments like not knowing what Aleppo is, not being able to name a world leader."

Oliver addressed Johnson's bizarre public behavior over the course of the campaign. The Libertarian nominee once talked with his tongue out at a visibly perplexed and uncomfortable reporter, and he once described his climbing of Mt. Everest in the following manner: "I did not conquer Mt. Everest. She lifted her skirt, and I got in there and got a peek, and it was really cool."

Johnson has also impulsively suggested that he would cut three important government departments — the Department of Education, the Department of Commerce, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development — without apparent knowledge of what those agencies do.

"The more you look at Gary Johnson and Jill Stein, the more you realize the lack of coverage they complain about so much might have genuinely benefitted them," Oliver concluded, "because their key proposals crumble under the slightest amount of scrutiny."

Hundreds of people walked out of an Amy Schumer comedy show after she mocked Donald Trump

amy schumer emmys 2015

About 200 people walked out of Amy Schumer's stand-up comedy show at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, after she mocked Donald Trump in her act, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Schumer called Trump an "orange, sexual-assaulting, fake college-starting monster" about halfway through her Sunday night show, and loud boos reportedly emanated from a "a vocal, but small minority" of the arena's crowd (the arena holds about 20,000).

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Schumer said that she doesn't understand how people can support the Republican nominee, and she even invited one Trump supporter onstage:

"At one point she asked for a Trump supporter — preferably one with sleeves, she told security personnel — to join her up onstage to explain their enthusiasm for Trump. One fellow did, but he said he voted for Trump mainly because he doesn’t trust Clinton. When some audience members booed, the actor and comedian invited them to leave and also asked security to remove anyone booing."

Several fans took to Twitter after the show to protest Schumer's open political stance, as the Daily Intelligencer points out.

Schumer endorsed Hillary Clinton in March. On Sunday, Clinton's Florida campaign Twitter account tweeted a picture of Schumer registering voters in Florida.

‘Grand Theft Auto’ is so influential, the company’s stock just exploded after teasing a new game (TTWO)

The "Grand Theft Auto" series is among the likes of "Super Mario," "Minecraft," "Pokémon," and "Tetris."

It's such a big deal, culturally, that it's a market-moving event when the studio behind "Grand Theft Auto" — Rockstar Games — even teases a new game. Such is the case with the past few days.

On Sunday, at 9 a.m. ET, Rockstar Games' social media channels all published a single image: a blood-red Rockstar Games logo with a faded/worn-looking outline. Video game fans pounced — could it be? finally? the long-awaited sequel to 2010 Rockstar hit "Red Dead Redemption"?

Rockstar Games

The color and the style certainly lined up. It's been six years since "Red Dead Redemption" launched on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 — a Western take on the third-person, open-world formula popularized by the "Grand Theft Auto" series. "Red Dead Redemption" was more serious in tone than the "GTA" games, and is widely lauded for some of the finest storytelling that video games — as a medium – offer.

On Monday morning, again at 9 a.m. ET, Rockstar teased another image:

Red Dead Redemption 2 (teaser)

Gunslingers against an artfully setting sun — with the same blood-red color in the original tease, which is a signature color scheme of the previous game. Keep in mind: Rockstar's still not said a word (or responded to request for comment). These images were published without any text, though the second image is admittedly more straightforward than the first.

Still, Rockstar's parent company — Take-Two Interactive — is enjoying a massive spike in its stock price:

Rockstar stock price spike

As you can see from the chart above, Take-Two Interactive's (TTWO) stock price spiked on Monday morning, from $42.50/share to $45.50/share, from a tease of a game. And keep in mind we're not even talking about Rockstar's marquee franchise ("GTA").

Rockstar is likely to reveal more about its new project in the next few days, which could be great news from Take-Two's stockholders. We just wanna know more about this cowboy game.

Little was known about the late David Bowie's extensive private art collection until after his death, when his estate reached out to Sotheby's about putting it up for auction.

As it turns out, one of Bowie's obsessions was with Memphis Design, a form of architecture and design founded by Ettore Sottsass in the early 1980s. The style relies heavily on bold, colorful, and asymmetrical shapes.

His collection, which is made up of over 100 pieces, will be auctioned off at Sotheby's in London on November 11. Below, see 20 of his most interesting and valuable peices.

Disney's still got the magic when it comes to capturing the imaginations of younger viewers, according to a new survey by investment bank Piper Jaffray.

On Friday, Piper Jaffray released its semi-annual survey of 10,000 US teens, and Disney was king among studios.

"Our survey points to another solid 12 months for Disney Studio," the analysts wrote. "Disney films dominated the most anticipated list with 'Rogue One,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' 'Thor,' and 'Doctor Strange' taking the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4,  No. 6, No. 7 spots."

Here is the chart from Piper Jaffray:

Screen Shot 2016 10 14 at 10.28.23 AM

Disney's blockbuster deal with Netflix also continues to align it to the minds of teens.

"From September onwards, Netflix will become the exclusive US pay TV home of the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar," Netflix announced earlier this year.

It's a good place to be for Disney, as Netflix is the dominant video service for teens, by far, according to Piper Jaffray.

According to the survey, a whopping 37% of teens watched Netflix every day. Significantly, Netflix's big competitors, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu, came in way below Netflix at just 3% each. That means Netflix is over 12 times as popular in terms of daily use.

At the top of the pack for general video consumption, after Netflix, came YouTube (26%), which inched over cable TV (25%). This continued an upward trend for YouTube and a downward one for cable.

Howard Stern says replaying his old vulgar interviews with Donald Trump would be a 'betrayal'

Howard Stern

There's hardly anyone more qualified to comment on Donald Trump's use of what he calls "locker room talk" than Howard Stern.

The shock jock has spent his career doing the most outrageous things he can come up with to entertain his listeners on the radio, and that included having Donald Trump on his show numerous times.

Some of the comments the Republican presidential nominee made on Stern's show, including disparaging remarks about women, have been played and transcribed by numerous media outlets since the vulgar and aggressive "Access Hollywood" tape featuring Trump and Billy Bush leaked.

On his Monday morning SiriusXM show, Stern commented on the use of his interviews by the media, and why he hasn't played his old Trump soundbites on his show.

"These conversations that I had with Donald Trump weren't done in private like the Billy Bush tapes. This was on the radio," Stern said. "Why don't I play all the tapes? I have to tell you why: I feel Donald Trump did the show in an effort to be entertaining and have fun with us, and I feel like it would be a betrayal to any of our guests if I sat there and played them now where people are attacking him."

And Stern adds a little more background to those old interviews.

"I knew I had a guy who loved to talk about sex," the host said. "I had a guy who loved to evaluate women on a scale of 1-10. These are avenues I went down because I knew it would entertain the audience."

Stern, who has said in the past he's supporting Hillary Clinton, claims he turned down "500" requests to talk about his chats with Trump. Speaking for almost a half-hour at the opening of his show about Trump, he admitted to being surprised that his Trump interviews didn't make the media rounds earlier.

"They were right there in the open," he said.

And on the topic of locker room talk, the term Trump has used to defend his comments on the "Access Hollywood" footage, Stern differs sharply from his onetime guest.

"Believe me, when I'm around guys, 85 percent of the times you're talking about p---y, but I have never been in the room when someone has said 'grab them by the p---y,'" said Stern, repeating what Trump said in the "Access Hollywood" tape. "No one's ever advocated going that step where you get a little bit, 'Hey, I'm going to invade someone's space.' ... A lot of [locker room talk] is real kind of desperate talk. The reason it's in a locker room is because no one's proud of it."

Netflix stock explodes over 20% on big earnings beat (NFLX)

reed hastings

Netflix's stock surged 20% after hours on Monday as original hit shows like "Stranger Things" and "Narcos" helped the streaming video company crush Wall Street expectations.

Netflix beat on both international and domestic subscriber additions by a hefty margin, as well as on EPS. Netflix's revenue was roughly in line with Wall Street forecasts.

Here are the key numbers:

  • Q3 EPS (GAAP): $0.12 versus Wall Street forecasts of $0.06, and Netflix's guidance of $0.05.
  • Q3 Revenue: $2.29 billion, up 36% year-over-year, versus Wall Street forecasts of $2.28 billion.
  • Q3 US subscriber growth (net additions): 370,000 versus Wall Street forecasts 304,000 compared to Netflix guidance of 300,000.
  • Q3 international subscriber growth (net additions): 3.2 million versus Wall Street forecasts 2.0 million, in line with Netflix's guidance.
  • Q4 subscriber growth guidance (domestic): 1.45 versus Wall Street forecasts of 1.0 million.
  • Q4 subscriber growth guidance (international): 3.75 million versus Wall Street forecasts of 3.1 million.

Netflix credited its huge beat on subscriber additions to "excitement around Netflix original content." The company particularly mentioned cult hit "Stranger Things" and the second season of "Narcos."

One Wall Street concern going into Netflix's earnings was its US price hike, termed "un-grandfathering," which started in May and continued to roll out this quarter. "By the end of Q3’16, we had un-grandfathered 75% of the members that are being un-grandfathered this year and the impact has been consistent with our expectations," the company wrote.

Internationally, Netflix mentioned its localization efforts in both Poland and Turkey, which Wall Street analysts suggested was spurring interest in the service over the last few weeks.

"We began accepting payment in local currency and added a local language user interface, subtitles and dubbing as well as some local content. We have seen nice gains in viewing and retention and we’ll undertake other localization efforts in the coming months and years," Netflix said.

As for China, Netflix said it has no immediate plans to enter the country.

"The regulatory environment for foreign digital content services in China has become challenging," the company said. "We now plan to license content to existing online service providers in China rather than operate our own service in China in the near term. We expect revenue from this licensing will be modest."

Netflix said it would release a whopping 1,000 hours of original shows and movies in 2017, up from over 600 hours in 2016.

‘Destiny’ is getting a big new update on Tuesday — here’s what to expect

destiny wrath of the machine

Bungie's multiplayer shooter "Destiny" is getting its first big update following the release of "Rise of Iron," its most recent expansion.

One of the things "Rise of Iron" added to "Destiny" in late September was the six-person "Wrath of the Machine" Raid. In it, players aim to stop the threat of SIVA — the super-advanced technology the Fallen are exploiting throughout the "Rise of Iron" campaign missions — once and for all.

With the new update, players will have access to a Heroic version of the Raid, which means it will be significantly more challenging than the standard version.

Bungie hasn't said exactly what those new challenges will be yet. In the past, Heroic versions of Raids have crippled player abilities in some way or added new foes, but we don't know exactly what changes are in store for Wrath of the Machine.

Additionally, the update will rise the maximum Light level from 385 to 400 — Light level being your general power level in "Destiny," which correlates to how effective your attacks and defenses are. With that Light increase, "Strike Hoards, Nightfall, Exotic Engrams, Trials of Osiris, Crucible, and Iron Banner will now provide rewards up to 400 Light," according to a post on Bungie's site that details every single change on the way.

You'll be able to download version 2.4.1 of "Destiny" starting October 18 at 10 a.m. PT, but the Heroic mode of Wrath of the Machine won't be playable until 2 p.m. PT.

It would take you over 41 days to binge-watch all the original shows and movies Netflix will release in 2017 (NFLX)

narcos glass raise

Netflix will release a whopping 1,000 hours of original shows and movies in 2017, the company announced during its quarterly earnings on Monday.

That means you'd have to spend an insane 41 days binge-watching Netflix to see it all.

Take a moment to let that marinate. 41 days. That's over a month!

It's also a hefty increase from Netflix's 2016 output of around 600 hours, which was already gargantuan.

Netflix has always seemed confident in its decision to pivot toward original content, which it has repeatedly described as a better bet for the company. But Netflix was particularly rosy about originals in a letter to investors on Monday. Netflix overperformed Wall Street expectations for Q3 soundly, and credited its huge beat on subscriber additions to "excitement around Netflix original content." Netflix particularly mentioned cult hit "Stranger Things" and the second season of "Narcos."

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also sung the praises of upcoming Netflix original series "The Crown." "We have a show coming up, 'The Crown,' which is some of the most impressive television I have ever seen," he said on Netflix's earnings call. The show, which chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II, will be released on November 4.

Netflix CFO David Wells reiterated that eventually Netflix's goal is to have its content have about a 50/50 split between licensed and original work. Wells did not say what the current ratio is, but it's safe to assume that content Netflix licenses from others still accounts for the majority of its catalog.

Here's a chart that shows how Netflix has increased its original programming, measured by hours of content, over the last six years.

The 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees signal a major shift in the music industry

$

depeche mode

Just as everything old is new again, in music, every trend eventually becomes uncool.

So it is with the announcement Tuesday morning of the nominees for the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (see below).

Name aside, the Rock Hall of Fame has long been a popularity contest with only a vague tie to genre (NWA was the fifth rap act to be inducted when it joined this year). And the nominees for 2017 suggest a decisive step forward for the Hall of Fame: It's finally embracing electronic music.

Depeche Mode is nominated for the first time, though it's not the first year the pioneering British synthpop band has been eligible. Kraftwerk is nominated again, but given the state of pop now, it feels as if the German electronic act — which essentially invented popular electronic music — may finally be due.

A full-fledged electronic act has never been inducted into the Hall of Fame, despite the presence of disco and hip-hop and artists like Prince and Madonna who owe a heavy debt to it. In some ways, that's just timing. The Hall of Fame limits eligible acts to those that have been around for at least 25 years. But the lack of electronic artists also has to do with a certain wariness among industry professionals who vote. Kraftwerk dates back to the 1970s, while Nirvana was very young when it got inducted in 2014.

It's very easy to connect the dots from Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode to trip-hop, dubstep, and the electronic music that suffuses nearly everything we listen to now. Depeche Mode was particularly pivotal in blurring the line between what we know as "synth" music and rock — processing guitars through giant, modular synths so it was hard to tell the difference between what was human-made and what was a computer, and perhaps more important, bringing the blues-based, brooding, masculine energy of '60s and '70s rock into the mix.

Depeche Mode was for a time the height of cool. But while I can attest singer Dave Gahan still shakes his butt onstage like a 20-something, he is now 54. And, critically from the point of view of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the band's biggest singles like "Enjoy the Silence" and "Personal Jesus" haven't ever really faded from view. Against all odds, they've become classics.

When I saw Depeche Mode live in 2013, I noticed a dad in the arena who had brought his toddler, dressed in an official Depeche Mode T-shirt. The band that helped redefine rock in the '80s and '90s has literally become dad music.

Which is just another sign of how music is evolving. EDM as a popular trend has subsided from its early-2000s peak, and while electronic will never go away, the pop charts have drifted toward more traditional, less garish genres in the past few years.

There will be no clearer sign that electronic music is uncool than when it's inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. And it's only a matter of time.

Here's the full list of nominees for induction in the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

  • Bad Brains
  • Chaka Khan
  • Chic
  • Depeche Mode
  • Electric Light Orchestra
  • J. Geils Band
  • Jane's Addiction
  • Janet Jackson
  • Joan Baez
  • Joe Tex
  • Journey
  • Kraftwerk
  • MC5

The folks behind 'Grand Theft Auto' just announced a brand new game

Red Dead Redemption 2

The folks behind "Grand Theft Auto" are at it again — Rockstar Games announced on Tuesday morning that "Red Dead Redemption 2" arrives in fall 2017 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The "Red Dead" series is beloved by gaming fans, for its vivid storytelling as much as its massive open-world. Like "Grand Theft Auto," you're in control of a protagonist from the third-person perspective, and you navigate a massive open-world with missions, side missions, and all sorts of ridiculous characters.

"Red Dead Redemption 2" is the long-awaited sequel to 2010's massively popular "Red Dead Redemption," which was on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Rockstar's been teasing the game for a few days, starting on Sunday morning with a single company logo in the series' signature blood red color theme.

Rockstar Games

That tease was followed on Monday by another, more direct teaser image:

Red Dead Redemption 2 (teaser)

The official announcement came on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. ET, via Rockstar Games' social channels. There's also an official website, but it's still lacking in details.

The next game in the "Red Dead" series is apparently a direct sequel to the last game in the series, though we have very little information to go on right now. The seven characters shown in the teaser image aren't from the previous game — no John Marston, for instance. Here's what we can take away from that image: a serious "Seven Samurai"/"Magnificent Seven" vibe.

What we do know about the game is from a single leak earlier this year, which pinned the game as a prequel to "Red Dead Redemption." There was even a map of the game:

Red Dead Redemption 2 (supposedly/leak)

But outside of that teensy bit of information, we know next to nothing about "Red Dead Redemption 2." It looks like we won't have to wait too long before learning more: We'll see our first trailer for "Red Dead Redemption 2" on Thursday, so stay tuned!

After reporting that Billy Bush was leaving his spot as a cohost of "Today" following the damaging leak of a 2005 "Access Hollywood" tape in which he and Donald Trump made vulgar comments about women, NBC has confirmed Bush is no longer employed by the show.

"Billy Bush will be leaving the 'Today' show's 9 a.m. hour, effective today," a statement sent to NBC staff on Monday said, according to Vulture. "While he was a new member of the 'Today' team, he was a valued colleague and longtime member of the broader NBC family. We wish him success as he goes forward."

Bush also released his own statement: "I am deeply grateful for the conversations I’ve had with my daughters, and for all of the support from family, friends, and colleagues. I look forward to what lies ahead."

Bush only joined the "Today" show team last August, which reportedly made the decision to end his employment there easier.

Stephen Colbert helps President Obama polish his résumé and appeal to millennials

Now that President Barack Obama is about to be out of a job, he stopped by Stephen Colbert's "Late Show" to see if he could get any career tips.

Or rather, Colbert dropped in on Obama to give the advice, and things got weird. In the segment from Tuesday night's "Late Show," Colbert dresses as an office manager and Obama asks, "How'd you get in here?"

Colbert pushes on and offers his wisdom to polish Obama's résumé.

"55. Tough time to start over for a man," Colbert observes.

He also points out that Obama has had no promotions "for the last 8 years" and asks the sitting president to explain that.

"There wasn't a lot of room for advancement in my last job," Obama jokes.

When asked to list his accomplishments Obama includes saving the auto industry, providing health care to millions, and a Nobel Peace Prize. But as for what he did to win the Nobel, he admits, "To be honest I still don't know."

Obama also uses the segment to make an appeal to millennial voters, telling them how important the election is. And Colbert of course puts a Snapchat filter on the president.

And the president pointed out his biggest weakness in his mind: "Sometimes... when I talk... I take too many pauses."

In the last few weeks, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has taken the "shackles" off to expose what he calls a "rigged" election in favor of his competitor, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
