Bernie Sanders slams Donald Trump for using Brussels response to 'attack' Muslim people

bernie sanders jimmy kimmel live abc

Bernie Sanders appeared on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Tuesday night to discuss the terrorist attacks in Brussels and Donald Trump's reaction to them.

In response to the attacks, which killed at least 31 people and wounded hundreds, Trump renewed his stance endorsing the use of torture "beyond waterboarding" to gain intelligence, as well as his controversial proposal to ban Muslim immigrants from entering the US.

In response, Sanders told host Jimmy Kimmel, "At the end of the day, we cannot allow the Trumps of the world to use these incidents to attack all of the Muslim people in the world. That is unfair. That is not what this country is about."

The candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination also referenced Trump's earlier statements on Mexican immigrants as an example of his hurtful blanket statements.

"When he talks about Mexicans coming over the border as rapists or criminals," Sanders, 74, said, "that is not what this country is about. We don't need, in my view, a president hurling these types of insults."

Kimmel told the candidate that he could see Trump bombing a house that might contain innocent people as part of the war on terror and wondered if Sanders would do so, as well.

"Obviously, if I were elected president of the United States, I would use the military forces of our country in an effective and appropriate way," Sanders answered.

Election confrontation aside, Kimmel wondered if Sanders is friends with Trump. To which the candidate said he doesn't speak to Trump "and I didn't go to his wedding either," a joking reference to opponent Hillary Clinton's attendance at Trump's 2005 wedding to wife Melania Trump.

Sanders did say that he and Clinton speak on occasion and that he doesn't believe that he contributes to her low popularity rating.

"We have been very careful about not attacking Secretary Clinton in any kind of a personal way," Sanders explained. "Other people do that. We have not. We focus on the issues."

Ted Cruz borrowed a movie quote to jab Donald Trump for threatening his wife

Ted Cruz seemed to use a movie quote on Wednesday to fight back against GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump in the candidates' latest feud, which centers on the candidates' wives.

"She is way out of his league," Cruz told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America." "If he wants to get in a character fight, he should stick with me.”

The line was nearly identical to one used in the 1995 film "The American President."

In a memorable scene, President Andrew Shepherd, who was portrayed by Michael Douglas, said the following:

You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, 'cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league.

Fast forward to 3:03 of the below clip to catch the bit from "The American President":

It wouldn't be the first time Cruz used a dated pop-culture reference in a spat with Trump, if he did indeed lift the line from the movie. In previous dustups he has cited Janet Jackson, the 1970s TV show "Happy Days," and the hit 1980s song "Maniac."

The latest feud between Trump and Cruz started late Tuesday night as votes were being tallied in Utah and Arizona, when Trump tweeted the following:

That tweet came minutes after Trump deleted a similar threatening tweet toward Cruz's wife, Heidi. The ad Trump is referring to came from an anti-Trump super PAC that has no affiliation with Cruz. It showed Trump's wife, who had a successful modeling career, posing in a nude photo shoot for British GQ.

The ad read: "Meet Melania Trump, your next first lady. Or you could support Ted Cruz on Tuesday."

Cruz fired back within minutes:

Trump then shot back at Cruz on Wednesday morning, following his "Good Morning America" interview.

"Lyin' Ted Cruz denied that he had anything to do with the G.Q. model photo post of Melania," he tweeted. "That's why we call him Lyin' Ted!"

Gal Gadot is Wonder Woman, and she's stealing the show.

For those unfamiliar with her name, the 30-year-old actress is best known for her roles in four "Fast and Furious" films.

But before she was in action films, she was Miss Israel and served two years in the Israeli army.

She's bringing the comic-book Amazonian princess to life alongside Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," out March 25 and, based on early reviews, she's a fan favorite.

Many critics are saying Gal Gadot is the best part of the movie.

She'll also star in the standalone "Wonder Woman" film scheduled for 2017 and (at least) two "Justice League" movies.

'Batman v Superman' could lose a lot of money based on its bad reviews, according to a box-office expert

batman v superman

It hasn't been a good start for "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." The highly anticipated Warner Bros. superhero movie, in which two of the biggest comic-book characters face off, screened for critics. And the outcome is bleak.

The reviews rushed online on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, and the film's rating on Rotten Tomatoes stands at around 40% as of this writing. Not what Warner Bros. was hoping for, though the "want to see" rating on Rotten Tomatoes is at 98%. And the movie accounts for 90% of this weekend's ticket sales on Fandango so far.

That's a big reason why Exhibitor Relations' senior box-office analyst, Jeff Bock, is still bullish on the film having a strong US opening this weekend.

"It's two of the most iconic figures in comics and that should still push it past $150 million," Bock told Business Insider by email on Tuesday evening as the negative reviews came in.

Bock said that Exhibitor Relations is predicting the film to do around $163 million domestically this weekend.

That's certainly not going to come close to the record-breaking $248 million opening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," but Bock admits that that kind of business for a blockbuster release happens only when the buzz is heavily positive.

"The negative reviews for 'Batman v Superman' certainly will curtail a mega-opening — fence sitters will likely shy away from it this weekend, and families definitely consider reviews when they have to drop $100 at a movie theater," he said.

Bock believes there's a more realistic goal "Batman v Superman" has to hit to save face within the industry.

deadpool Fox final"No matter how you spin it, at the very least it has to do 'Deadpool' business to be considered a successful weekend," he said.

"Deadpool" made $132 million during its opening weekend, a record for a February release.

A lot is riding on "Batman v Superman." It's essentially the launch of the DC Comics universe coming to the big screen, similar to what Disney has done with its Marvel movies. Warner Bros. has "Suicide Squad" opening in August, which will include a cameo from Ben Affleck's Batman, and "Justice League" parts one and two are already slated for 2017 and 2019 releases, respectively.

The true test for the movie's overall success will be how it does overseas. It's opening in China this weekend, too — "The Force Awakens" didn't open in China until weeks after it played in the US and other territories.

"Jurassic World" made the same play and took in $99 million in China during its opening weekend. It went on to make over $1 billion overseas.

Back here in the States, you'll have a good indication of how "Batman v Superman" will fare based on its Thursday-night preview showings. "Deadpool" had a record-breaking $12.7 million in its preview.

Cersei and Jaime will reach an 'all-time weird level' on the new 'Game of Thrones' season

Game_of_Thrones cersei jaime HBO

"Game of Thrones" fans will witness new levels of crazy when Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) reunite on the upcoming season six.

The pair have been separated for a while. When we last saw her, Cersei was punished by the religious clergy aka the Faith Militant whose influence has taken over Casterly Rock. After being forced to do a walk of shame for admitting to adultery (but not to the incest with Jaime), Cersei was released to her family.

“It’s probably her most interesting season,” star Lena Headey told Entertainment Weekly. “She really has nothing to lose and she has everything to gain from a horrible position she finds herself in.”

Meanwhile, Jaime has had his own trials away from home. He wasn't able to save his and Cersei's daughter Myrcella (Nell Tiger Free) from death, and so brings bad news to the incestuous siblings' reunion. Thankfully for Jaime, Cersei's recent fall from grace means she will need him for other tasks, including putting down the Faith Militant.

“Her relationship with Jaime is at an all-time weird level,” Headey says. “It’s juicy, and it’s so f--king dark.”

While the cast members are thin on specifics, the theories around the pair's future are plentiful. Will next season find Jaime snapping out of his longtime infatuation with his sister? Will their last child also meet his death — the fulfillment of a prophecy from season one?

Those questions will get some answers on the sixth season of "Game of Thrones," debuting April 24.

I have two huskies because I have the time to spend with them, I take them everywhere with me, my parents/Leah(my sister), can look after them when I go away and I also have amazing friends at a doggy day care that look after and groom them too! Huskies are HARD WORK... but in saying that, once you have one, you won't know how you lived without them. Ace and TJ (my other husky) are literally like my kids. They have the most gorgeous and loving personalities. They let me fall asleep on them, they are always by my side and they always make me laugh. I love them so much! batman superman comic con 2

Now that we've seen "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (opening March 25), with its new look at the Dark Knight as Ben Affleck takes over the character, it's time to take stock of the best — and the worst — Batmans we've seen in movies and TV.

The Batman of the screen has evolved from a witty crime fighter on TV to a darkly conflicted man in the movies.

Fans of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, are extremely loyal to the actor they believe portrayed him best. Any objection is liable to lead to rowdy debates. Who can forget Seth Rogen and Zac Efron arguing the better Batman — Michael Keaton or Christian Bale — in "Neighbors"?

who is batman Universal
So let's add some more fuel to this superhero debate. Here are the actors who played Batman on TV and in movies (we've excluded animation, with a couple of important exceptions), ranked, starting with the worst.

Here are the Batman actors from worst to best, and where Affleck falls:

9. George Clooney ("Batman & Robin," 1997)

Still trying to find his footing post-"ER," Clooney was jumping back and forth between romantic comedies and action movies when he took the Batman role after Val Kilmer was one-and-done in "Batman Forever." It turned out to be a disaster. Fans were exhausted by director Joel Schumacher's colorful aesthetic and the cartoonish villains played by Arnold Schwarzenegger (Mr. Freeze) and Uma Thurman (Poison Ivy). And Clooney’s Batman was too jokey. The gruff Dark Knight had become playful and soft.

"Batman & Robin" is the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise, making $238 million worldwide.

8. Lewis G. Wilson "The Batman" TV show, 1943)

Wilson has the distinction of being the first actor to play Batman, starring in the 1943 series. Though he had the comics as a reference point, Wilson was still at a disadvantage being the first to put on the tights. He holds his own, but it's certainly not a performance that is memorable, as you can see in the footage here.

The women have to diet and exercise very intensely before the annual fashion show...and they also sometimes have to roll around in the sun during a bikini shoot, which can be downright exhausting, as PINK models Devon Windsor and Rachel Hilbert recently told PopSugar.

"After shoots we're usually pretty exhausted," Windsor told the women's website."Especially after a beach shoot — the sun wears you out."

In fact, simply traveling to the beach can also cumbersome..

"It can be a bit exhausting," Windsor reiterated.

The 3 best sci-fi movies ever according to an expert

midnight special wb

With his latest film, "Midnight Special," director Jeff Nichols takes his first step into the studio system after hits in the indie-film world ("Mud," "Take Shelter").

Resembling early Steven Spielberg movies, "Midnight Special" follows a father and his son, who has special powers, as they race from authorities.

Along with strong performances from Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, and Adam Driver, the movie is a unique science-fiction tale that brings to mind numerous classics of the genre.

Business Insider spoke to Nichols about the sci-fi movies that inspire him.

"Midnight Special" is currently playing in theaters.

SEE ALSO: RANKED: Every actor who's played Batman, from best to worst

"Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977)

Following the sensation of "Jaws," Steven Spielberg made one of the most memorable sci-fi movies of all time, stretching what we thought could be done with visual effects along with providing a touching story front-and-center. It was a movie experience that Nichols has never forgotten.

"The first experience, you're swept up in the moment of the aliens and spaceships," Nichols said. "But then you go back and you look at the film again and you see how Spielberg looks at suburban life in America in the '70s and it was incredible. The accurate representation of the kid's bedrooms and the den, it made the mystery more immediate for me as a kid."

"Starman" (1984)

John Carpenter is known best for his classic films like "Halloween" and "Escape from New York," but one of his lesser-known titles is this intimate tale starring Jeff Bridges as an alien who takes the form of a widow's husband. He and the widow travel to where the Starman will be picked up by his people, though the government attempts to intervene.

"A big experience growing up was trolling through late-night television and that's where I came across 'Starman,'" Nichols said. "I can distinctly remember the first time I saw it. It was in letterbox and just didn't look like anything else on television. The tone of the film, the sincerity of it. I was really struck by it."

"Cloak & Dagger" (1984)

Not all science fiction has to include aliens from another world. Made on the cusp of the home video game craze, "Cloak & Dagger" stars Henry Thomas as Davey, a young boy who loves the world of espionage and whose imaginary friend (played by Dabney Coleman) is the main character of his favorite video game. But he finds himself really on the run from bad guys when he realizes the video game he's carrying is in fact filled with top secrets that could be dangerous if in the wrong hands.

"A big inspiration for 'Midnight Special' was the energy of being a kid in the '80s," Nichols said. "And this movie was so great because I remember carrying a backpack just like Davey, and I would have things in the bag just in case I would have to encounter a group of bad guys like he did. For me that was so much fun."

Why it could make sense for Netflix to buy an established Hollywood studio (NFLX)

$
0
0

reed hastings netflix ceoThe volume of TV content is going to grow exponentially over the coming years, and creative talent won’t be able to keep up, according to analysts at Barclays.

In a note last week, the analysts outlined the case that an “over-the-top” (OTT) powerhouse like Netflix might have to actually acquire an established studio at some point in the future, simply to continue in the arms race for content.

The analysts believe we are at the start of an explosion in the amount of TV that will be produced (including streaming content from the likes of Netflix or Amazon). Indeed, Netflix alone will spend at least $5 billion on programming in 2016.

But eventually there will be a limit on how much good content can be produced, the analysts argue. “Creative talent is not infinitely scalable,” they write. And if the competition to woo top TV talent heats up, organizations that can identify talent early and maintain a relationship will become more valuable. This means studios, “especially those with established franchises and an ecosystem of talent,” according to the analysts.

Given the lack of big studios, in this new climate it could make more sense for a “OTT” player like Netflix to buy one, versus having to continually bid against its rivals, the analysts write.

The current situation

Right now, when Netflix puts out an “original,” it doesn’t usually produce the show. Lionsgate Television, for instance, makes "Orange Is the New Black." Netflix then pays for a global license.

But Netflix appears to be moving toward producing more of its own shows, including Chelsea Handler’s upcoming talk show, according to Bloomberg.

Buying an established studio could supercharge these efforts.

A reliable pipeline

What is bubbling under the surface of Barclays' prediction is the threat that traditional TV giants might stop licensing their shows to Netflix. For the past few months, media executives have grumbled that they might have to reassess their relationship to Netflix. If media companies shy away from licensing to Netflix, presumably because they see the practice as financing a competitor, then it will become harder for Netflix to maintain its steady flow of content.

The analysts write that “OTT” platforms like Netflix will need a “more controllable” pipeline of content over time. One way to get it: buy your own studio.

Netflix was not immediately available for comment.

greys anatomy

Shonda Rhimes once almost made a terrible career decision.

Today, Rhimes pretty much owns Thursday-night television, with her hit series "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal," and "How to Get Away With Murder." Her latest show, "The Catch," premieres Thursday, March 24.

In her 2015 book, "Year of Yes," Rhimes takes readers back to the days when she was casting "Grey's Anatomy" and still somewhat unused to the experience of being the boss.

Rhimes explains that everyone on the team was pushing to cast a particular actor as Cristina Yang, one of the doctors and main characters on the show. This was before they'd even met Sandra Oh, who would eventually go on to land the part.

Everyone, Rhimes said, thought this actor was great — and a perfect fit for the role.

Here's Rhimes:

I, too, thought she was great. But I did not want to cast her. Now I know what I did not know then — at this level, everyone is a great actor; there are no bad actors, there are just actors who do not fit your vision. This actor was just … not the key that fit the lock that turned the story in my brain.

shonda rhimesRhimes kept telling people she needed time to think, largely because she feared voicing an opinion that was different from everyone else's. Needless to say, the rest of the team was getting frustrated.

Rhimes' casting director, Linda, suspected what was going on, and called her to say, "This is your show and if you cast someone you do not want, it will not be your show. You need to tell everyone no."

When the team gathered on the phone, Rhimes hesitated before finally blurting it out: "No."

Though they were surprised and still tried to convince her otherwise, no one got especially angry or turned against her. Instead, her producer expressed relief that Rhimes' enthusiasm had returned and that she'd finally made a decision.

The next day, the team met Sandra Oh.

"That was my very first no at work," Rhimes writes. "Because of that NO? I decided that I was steering the ship. And I started behaving that way."

Edward Snowden and 'The Wire' creator had a fascinating conversation about surveillance on Twitter

American whistleblower Edward Snowden delivers remarks via video link from Moscow to attendees at a discussion regarding an International Treaty on the Right to Privacy, Protection Against Improper Surveillance and Protection of Whistleblowers in Manhattan, New York September 24, 2015. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly

An unlikely Twitter exchange between NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and "The Wire" creator David Simon drew attention on Sunday, as the pair debated privacy and surveillance techniques.

The conversation started with a tweet from Snowden, who was responding to a New York Times article that highlighted the use of "burner" cellphones in last year's terrorist attacks in Paris.

Burner phones are disposable cellphones purchased with cash and used without a contract. Such phones make it easy for criminals to use them for illegal activities and dispose them when the phone  — and the phone number associated with it — become to risky to use.

The article detailed a 55-page report from French antiterrorism police that described dozens of throwaway phones being found as authorities retraced the suspects' paths outside the Bataclan concert hall, soccer stadium and restaurant where the attacks occurred.

Snowden jokingly referred to the report's emphasis on burner phones by remarking on Simon's popular TV series, which commonly featured burner phones as a way to cover up characters' drug deals.

"'The Wire' (2002) is helping the terrorists. David Simon wanted for questioning," Snowden tweeted.

Snowden's remark was a response to the common criticism that Snowden "helped terrorists" by leaking thousands of classified NSA documents to journalists.

Although Simon's Twitter handle hadn't been tagged, Simon quickly pointed out that the mass surveillance techniques Snowden so famously opposed would allow authorities to access metadata before the phones are discarded.

From there, the conversation spiraled into a debate on the differences between drug dealers' and transnational terrorists' use of burner phones, and the importance of certain types of surveillance techniques and the extent to which they should be used.

While Simon argued that surveillance is important to criminal investigations, Snowden rebutted that the government has a record of abusing authority and violating citizens' privacy. Simon commended Snowden's reveal of the NSA's domestic spying practices, but ultimately lamented the release of documents pertaining to international spying, which he said was the CIA and NSA's primary job.

In addition, Simon called into question the juxtaposition between Snowden's fears of a surveillance state with his statements that domestic spying programs haven't been successful.

After trading more than 20 tweets back and forth, the two agreed to disagree and wrapped up the debate politely.

The conversation gained so much traction, Twitter curated it into its "Moments" collection. It's worth reading the whole thing:

Vice's CEO Shane Smith would rather give control of his TV shows to inexperienced college graduates than established TV directors.

The mistake most media companies make when they start producing online video is to hire "someone with pedigree from TV," according to Smith who added that the company will have "already lost" because the videos will end up looking "like TV but worse."

In an interview with Marketing Week, Smith said: "We go to the tech colleges and get the best shooters and the best cutters. There could be a 23-year-old kid straight out of school and [we say to them] ‘okay, now you’re running a TV show'."

The 46-year-old journalist and entrepreneur said hiring experienced TV people is expensive because they will want to bring producers and camera people with them.

His advice to other media CEOs jealous of his media empire, which is reportedly worth more than $4 billion: "You have to hire people that aren’t corrupted by that world."

The second reason Smith gave for wanting to hire young people is because of Vice's young audience.

"If you want to be successful with millennials, the [content makers] also have to be millennials because it’s their own language," Smith said.

Vice's new TV channel VICELAND has already launched in the US and will start broadcasting in Europe from September.
