10 Memorable Moments From 'Attack of the Show!'

$

olivia munn hotdogYesterday, G4 announced the cancellation of its two lead programming series come the end of the year, "Attack of the Show," and "X-Play."

The news comes less than three months before NBCU's plan to revitalize the network from geek to GQ chic come 2013.

The shows provided gamers with one of the first original outlets on television that offered an in depth first look at video games, films, technology, and more. Both series also heavily covered gaming events including E3 and San Diego's Comic Con.

Check out some of the most popular clips from the show >

Debuting in March 2005, "Attack of the Show!" was a big success with its original cast list consisting of Chris Hardwick, Olivia Munn, Kevin Pereira, and Adam Sessler.

Combined, both series aired more than 3,000 shows and launched the careers of many of its co-hosts from Kevin Pereira to Olivia Munn.

The show's cancellation isn't a complete surprise.

After Munn's exit in 2010 to pursue her acting career, the show never really regained traction using a series of guest hosts up alongside its final original cast member, Pereira, until naming Candace Bailey as Munn's replacement in January 2011.

DirecTV dropped the channel right before Munn's departure, citing it among its lowest-rated networks.

Kevin Pereira was the last original cast member to leave the show at the end of this May. He's currently working on a SyFy show, "Viral Video Showdown" which will debut October 30.

As of late, many viewers have been turned off by the younger talent consisting of eye candy hosts Bailey and Sara Underwood, feeling the show offers more fluff and less incentive for diehard gamers.

We've rounded up some of the show's most watched clips, as well as a few celebrity cameos.

And, naturally, we've included a few memorable clips of scene stealer Munn.

August 2010: James Cameron appeared on the show to talk about the re-release of "Avatar."

December 2009: Jimmy Fallon played "Tweet"-tac-toe on air when he went on the show to discuss coming to late-night television.

December 2008: Pereira and Munn take shots of hot sauce on air.

10 Great Movies About Making Movies

$

Barton Fink

Movie lovers, and Hitchcock fans in particular, are about to get a fascinating double dose of behind-the-scenes dramatization. First up is "The Girl," which premiered on HBO on October 20, that tells the story of the relationship between Hitchcock (Toby Jones) and Tippi Hedren (Sienna Miller), the model selected to star in "The Birds" despite having no acting experience. Then, on November 1, "Hitchcock" will premiere at the AFI Film Festival – and is slated to open in select theaters by the end of the month. "Hitchcock" deals with the filming of "Psycho," focusing on the relationship between the director (Anthony Hopkins) and wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren) while he is making one of the greatest horror films of all time. (And to answer your next three questions: Scarlett Johansson plays Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel plays Vera Miles, and James D’Arcy plays Anthony Perkins.)

Novels about writing are hard to read; we can’t think of any paintings about painting or songs about songwriting, but both of those seem like bad ideas. Film, though, is different, as movies about movie making can be both profound and fun. As a viewer, you’re free to ponder the layers: Text vs metatext; the film vs. the film-within-a-film. But you’re also free to ignore that and simply enjoy the opportunities for comedy and intrigue offered by a film set. A film set that is itself the set of a film. The film about the film.

Here are ten great movies (or at least noble attempts) that peel back the skin of polished cinematic product and tell their stories within the guts of the process. Some are imagined accounts behind real movies; others are fiction from the title sequence to the credits. For the purposes of this list, we’ve left out – good as they are – biopics like "Chaplin," "Ed Wood," and "Boogie Nights" and concentrated on films that are about making a single film. Even so, the list of what might have been included – among them "King Kong," "Le Mepris," "The Player," and "Bowfinger" – runs well beyond ten entries. What can we say? Everything, even a Fellini movie, has to end sometime.

8 ½ (1963)

Director: Federico Fellini

Successful director Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) is blocked. Everyone expects his latest work, a quasi-science fiction movie, to be yet another hit, but Guido can’t bring himself to care about it too much. He’s going through personal problems – the harem of sorts that has come to surround him (including a wife and a mistress) is rebelling. Guido is weary of his complex life, of having so many people depending on his every decision, yet it is through memories and imagined dialogues that he finds his way back, and ultimately rededicates himself to his career. A three-hour nonlinear autobiographical portrait of an apathetic, angst-ridden director? In anyone else’s hands, this would be a recipe for self-indulgent disaster, but when you’re Fellini – arguably the greatest director of all time – you can get away with it.

S.O.B. (1981)

Director: Blake Edwards

After a string of successes in the early and mid 1960s, including "Breakfast at Tiffany’s," "Days of Wine and Roses," and two Pink Panther movies, Edwards’ career hit the skids, beginning with the poorly-received "Darling Lili." "S.O.B." is a send-up of Edwards’ experiences making that film, which was beset by studio interference and recut before release without Edwards’ permission. In "S.O.B.," suicidal producer Felix Farmer (Richard Mulligan) tries to save a dog of a picture by turning it into an erotic musical in which Felix’s wife, the Julie Andrews-like Sally Miles (played by Edwards’ wife, Julie Andrews) will shatter her wholesome image by appearing topless. When this seemingly-terrible idea starts looking like it just might work, the studio begins to meddle. Felix dies in the fight to save his film, which ends up being highly successful. Sally, now widowed, wins an Oscar.

Barton Fink (1991)

Director: Joel Coen

This Coen Brothers film is more about writing movies than filming them – and it’s really more about not writing than writing. Protagonist Barton Fink (John Turturro) arrives in Hollywood after some success in the New York theater world. A studio executive gives him his first assignment: “A Wallace Beery wrestling picture.” Time goes by and Barton cannot get more than a couple lines into his script. Intrigue swirls; there’s a serial killer on the loose and Barton’s experience meeting a broken-down novelist (based on William Faulkner) is hardly inspiring. "Barton Fink" ends with a macabre flourish that might have been avoided if Barton had simply done the job he was hired for. As the studio man says, “Wallace Beery. Wrestling. What do you need, a road map?”

15 People Who Failed Before Becoming Famous

Oprah

The names Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan and Steve Jobs aren't usually associated with failure.

But before these successful super stars made it big in their respective industries, they first failed, were fired, or heard the word "no" countless times.

But they never gave up.

See what 15 game changers had to overcome before becoming famous.

Walt Disney was told a mouse would never work.

Before Walt Disney built the empire he has today, he was fired by a newspaper editor because "he lacked imagination and had no good ideas."

In 1921, Walt formed his first animation company in Kansas City, where he made a deal with a distribution company in New York, in which he would ship them his cartoons and get paid six months down the road. He was forced to dissolve his company and at one point could not pay his rent and reportedly survived by eating dog food.

Also, When Walt first tried to get MGM studios to distribute Mickey Mouse in 1927, he was told that the idea would never work because a giant mouse on the screen would terrify women.

Entrepreneur Walt had a whole slew of bad ideas before coming up with good ones, read about them here.

J.K. Rowling was on welfare.

Before J.K. Rowling had any "Harry Potter" success, the writer was a divorced singled mother on welfare struggling to get by while also attending school and writing a novel.

Luckily, that novel turned into the "Harry Potter" franchise, which has since made Rowling a billionaire as of April 2012.

Oprah Winfrey was told she was "unfit for TV."

At age of 22, the now-TV mogul was fired from her job as a television reporter because she was "unfit for tv."

Winfrey was terminated from her post as co-anchor of the 6 o'clock weekday news on Baltimore's WJZ-TV after the show received low ratings. Winfrey has called it the “first and worst failure of her TV career.”

Winfrey was then demoted to morning TV, where she found her voice and met fellow newbie Gayle King, who would one day become her producer and editor of O, The Oprah Magazine.

Seven years later, Winfrey moved to Chicago, where her self-titled talk show went on to dominate daytime TV for 25 years and ultimately head her own channel, OWN.

This Very Rare Atari Cartridge May Be Worth Over $30K

atari cartridge

Back in 2010, I wrote a story about some very rare and very expensive video games. Thanks to that article, Tanner Sandlin of Austin, Texas realized he had one of only a handful of known copies of the Atari game, Air Raid. Normally the cartridge sells for about $3,000 online, but Sandlin had an ace up his sleeve: the game’s original box, which had never been seen before. The game and the box wound up selling for $31,600 on eBay.

If you think that’s crazy, there’s a good chance that Tanner’s auction-price record is about to be shattered.

Recently, a man in California (we’ll call him Lucky, as he would prefer to remain anonymous), was reading another article about rare Atari games. Naturally, Air Raid was mentioned, as was the $31,600 sale price. Lucky recalled that he’d been given a sample copy of the game by a sales rep back in the 1980s when Lucky was an assistant manager at a drug store that sold video games. Lucky took the game home, played it for a few minutes, but decided he didn’t want to order it for the store’s inventory. When he told the sales rep he could have the game back, the rep said not to bother because none of his other clients were all that interested, either. Lucky stuck his copy of Air Raid in an old Atari display case at home, where it sat virtually untouched for the next 30 years.

Upon reading the article, Lucky and his daughter scoured through his old collection and found they had the second known copy of Air Raid in the box. But unlike the copy that Tanner bought from a clearance bin at a discount store in the mid-1980s, Lucky’s Air Raid has never been in circulation, so the box is in near-perfect condition.

As Lucky and his daughter were taking photos of the box to send to Albert Yarusso, the owner of AtariAge.com (who personally examined Sandlin’s Air Raid box in 2010), they discovered something else tucked inside: the instruction manual. Before now, there was only speculation that a manual even existed, so this makes Lucky’s the only “CIB” (Complete In Box) copy of Air Raid ever found.

After verifying that the cartridge still worked, Lucky and his daughter put Air Raid up for sale on GameGavel.com, an auction site exclusively for video games. Will it break Sandlin’s $31,600 sale-price record? Watch the auction and find out!

Here's How Chanel Tried To Fix Brad Pitt's Horrendous Ad

$

After Brad Pitt's nonsensical spot for Chanel No.5 was skewered by people with eyes and ears — and inevitably ended up in a series of SNL sketches — Chanel re-edited the original ad to be more ... well ... bearable.

Although the pseudo-intellectual raving about the world turning "and we turn with it" is the same, the visuals are different. Now instead of watching Brad Pitt awkwardly recite his enigmatic monologue, refusing to make eye contact with a camera lens, viewers are treated to images of beautiful women staring out windows, spinning, and walking on water.

While part two is as cryptic as part one, it is certainly less uncomfortable. Who knew that showing less of Brad Pitt would improve a commercial?

Watch the spot here:

And in case you missed it, here's the original, directed by Joe Wright:

If you missed it -- or the swanky after party -- we have you covered. Photographer Michael Seto took the party by storm and snapped shots of the entire evening.

Last Thursday, some of New York's most impressive tech people gathered on Wall Street. They were celebrating the annual Silicon Alley 100 list, a group of people who have done the most interesting things in tech this year.

Guests they made their way up to the trading floor, where the cocktail party was being held.

Theaters Fall Quiet Before Hurricane Sandy's Landfall–Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

Argo

It's uncertain how much Hurricane Sandy preparation up much of the east coast affected the box office–AMC began closing many theaters in NJ, NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, and the D.C./Baltimore area–but it was an extremely slow weekend at theaters.

Despite four new releases, no new film managed to gross $10 million. The highest-grossing film for the weekend earned slightly more than $12 million.

Gerard Butler's surfing film "Chasing Mavericks" failed to make a splash earning $2.2 million. The Fox film cost an estimated $20 million to produce.

Meanwhile, the next Bond film, "Skyfall" is tracking well two weeks ahead of its U.S. release. Overseas, it has earned $77 million opening weekend.

Out of the top ten this week are "Looper" after five weeks, Disney's "Frankenweenie," and "Pitch Perfect."

Here are this week's winners and losers:

10. Nickelodeon's try at a grown-up tween film "Fun Size" just managed to make it into the top ten earning $4 million.

9. Summit's "Alex Cross" drops sharply in week two earning $5 million. To date, the film has earned $19.3 million of its $35 million budget.

8. Meanwhile, Summit's horror flick "Sinister" narrowly beats "Cross" with $5.07 million. In three weeks, the movie has managed to pull in more than $39.5 million on a $3 million budget.

7. Kevin James' "Here Comes the Boom" stays in the same place at $5.5 million this weekend.

5. Horror flick "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" ties with "Taken 2" in its opening weekend grossing $8 million of its estimated $20 million.

5. "Taken 2" manages to only fall three spots also earning $8 million. Worldwide, Liam Neeson's action thriller has "taken" more than $315 million.

4. "Paranormal Activity 4" falls from the top spot this week. The fourth film in the franchise dropped 70.1 percent earning $8.6 million this weekend.

3. Halle Berry and Tom Hanks' "Cloud Atlas" debuted to a week $9.4 million.

2. Adam Sandler's "Hotel Transylvania" is still surging at theaters thanks to a 262 theater bump. The film earned $9.5 million in week five to bring its U.S. total to $130.4 million.

1. It's been a long time coming, but Ben Affleck's "Argo" finally earns the top spot with $12.3 million. In three weeks, the film has grossed $60.7 million, surpassing its estimated $44.5 million budget.

Update: Kimmel Canceled & How Hurricane Sandy Is Affecting Hollywood Production In NYC

John Cusack 2012

UPDATE: Jimmy Kimmel's Brooklyn show Monday night has been canceled. Letterman and Fallon will film without audiences. The "Seal Team 6" screening in DC has been postponed.

***

Hurricane Sandy may be hitting the Northeast, but her impact is reaching even Hollywood.

From canceled film premieres and permits to theaters going dark, here's how the Frankenstorm is affecting Hollywood productions on the East Coast:

  • The show must go on for late-night! New York-based late night shows "Late Show with David Letterman" and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" will still tape Monday for broadcast later in the night. "We will be doing the show tomorrow night no matter what," Fallon Tweeted Sunday.
  • Comic Louis C.K. has postponed two New York stand-up shows until March 2nd, posting on his website: "I thought about this very carefully and I really started to worry about making 4300 people come into midtown manhattan on Sunday night, which is just when the stormatron 5000 is supposed to crush our empire. new york state has ordered the s[h]utdown of all mass transit (subways, buses and commuter trains) as of 7pm Sunday night. If it's any consolation, I'm eating a pretty staggering fee for canceling the show. But I can take it. What I can't take is the thought that there's a CHANCE 4300 people will be in danger trying to get home from my stupid show."
  • Production on the Connecticut-based indie film "After the Fall," starring David Duchovny, has shut down temporarily. Producer Anthony Mastromauro told THR: "We have decided to cancel tomorrow as all indications are that the storm will hit us in some capacity and I cannot put any of my crew or actors in harms way."
  • TV news organizations are in disaster protocol, meaning only essential regular broadcast personnel are expected to report to work.

And, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Focus Features has suspended the New York City premiere of its Oscar hopeful, Anna Karenina, which was set for Tuesday night in Union Square. Director Joe Wright and star Keira Knightley were set to attend, and the distributor is working to reschedule for another evening"

Monday's New York screening of the Denzel Washington starrer Flight has also been grounded. And Universal cancelled its Monday screening of The Man With the Iron Fist. But perhaps in a nod to the macho Navy SEALS, the Weinstein Co. and National Geographic are staying the course with their Tuesday premiere of SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden.

Most of the hurricane memes showing up are from a particular episode of "Spongebob," "Survival of the Idiots," where moon suit-wearing squirrel Sandy is waken from her hibernation slumber early and goes on the attack.

Fox Insults Everybody By Using The National Anthem As A Billboard For Promoting Shows

$
0
0

Demi Lovato

Fox is well-known for cross-promoting its shows during live sporting events, including graphics, announcement from commentators, and occasionally seeing stars of primetime shows strategically seated. In recent years, Fox has found another avenue for self-promotion: our national anthem.

Last night, prior to game four of the World Series, Demi Lovato, a judge on Fox's "The X-Factor," sang the national anthem (and it was awful). And the night before, it was Zooey Deschanel of Fox's "New Girl." It was also the second straight World Series in which both sang the national anthem.

In fact, eight times in the last two World Series, including all four games this season, the singer of the national anthem had ties to a show on Fox...

  • 2011 Game 1 — Scotty McCreery, a former contestant on "American Idol"
  • 2011 Game 4 — Zooey Deschanel, star of "New Girl"
  • 2011 Game 5 — Demi Lovato, judge on "The X-Factor"
  • 2011 Game 7 — Chris Daughtry, a former contestant on "American Idol"
  • 2012 Game 1 — Philip Phillips, a former contestant on "American Idol"
  • 2012 Game 2 — Matthew Morrison, star of "Glee"
  • 2012 Game 3 — Zooey Deschanel, star of "New Girl"
  • 2012 Game 4 — Demi Lovato, judge on "The X-Factor"

And while they are accomplished as singers to some degree, Fox made sure we knew they were part of the Fox family. Notice above that Fox did not identify any of Lovato's musical accomplishments, just her role on their network. It is also worth noting that Fox (or Major League Baseball) invited Deschanel, and not M. Ward, the other member of her band She & Him.

But maybe the most egregious part of this is that the last two games were in Detroit. Not only did Fox and MLB trot out retreads, they ignored a long and rich history of music in the home of Motown. A history with singers much more accomplished (and talented) than these human billboards.

It's insulting to Detroit. It's insulting to accomplished singers. It is insulting to baseball fans. And it is insulting to our country.

'Avengers' Director Joss Whedon Predicts A Zombie Apocalypse If Mitt Romney Becomes President

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon, director of "The Avengers" and creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," is definitely not a Romney supporter.

He recently recorded and posted a video explaining the potential for a zombie Apocalypse if Romney is voted into office.

Whedon says Romney is a very different candidate than Obama.

According to a video posted by Whedon, Romney has:

"The vision and determination to cut through business-as-usual politics and finally put this country back on the path to the zombie apocalypse. Romney is ready to make the deep rollbacks in healthcare, education, social services, healthcare, reproductive rights that will guarantee poverty, unemployment, overpopulation, disease, rioting -- all crucial elements in creating a nightmare zombie wasteland. But it's his commitment to ungoverned corporate privilege that will nosedive this economy into true insolvency and chaos, the kind of chaos you can't buy back. Money is only so much paper to the undead. The one percent will no longer be the very rich, it will be the very fast."

Whedon goes on to say "he's not afraid to face a ravaging, grasping hoard of subhumans because that's how he sees poor people already."

He advises Americans to start hoarding canned goods "because if Mitt takes office, sooner or later the Zomnies will come for all of us."

Tony Montana may have been living the American dream in Miami, but the real mansion that served as a backdrop for the 1983 movie "Scarface" is actually located in Santa Barbara, California.

It’s also available to rent for a cool $30,000 a month through Village Properties Realtors.

The 10,000-square-foot Roman Revival mansion is located on a 10-acre property with a swimming pool, two fountains (both indoor and outdoor), tiled murals, and a guesthouse. It also has four bedrooms, a rooftop terrace, and staggering views of the Pacific Ocean.

The house is known locally as "El Fureidis," or "little paradise." It was designed by American architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and built in 1906.

skyfall bond

The latest Bond film may not hit theaters in the United States for another week; however, spoilers have already found their way online.

Don't worry, we're not spoiling anything here.

If you MUST know, Wikipedia's current updated entry for "Skyfall" contains a full plot synopsis including twists, the fates of major characters, and more.
