Taylor Swift is exclusively releasing her '1989' documentary on Apple Music

On Sunday, Taylor Swift turned 26 — and she used her birthday to make a surprise announcement.

Swift's upcoming 1989 World Tour documentary will be released exclusively on Apple Music, Swift said in an Instagram post.

"Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes!" she wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a teaser trailer for the documentary. "I have a little surprise for you. The 1989 World Tour Live. Directed by Jonas Akerlund. Released on @applemusic December 20, 2015."

Apple Music users will be able to stream the documentary for free.

Earlier this year Swift publicly sparred with Apple. In June, the singer refused to put her most recent album, "1989," on Apple Music.

"I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months," Swift said in a Tumblr post at the time, justifying her decision. "I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company."

Her opinion was enough to catch the attention of Apple Music's Eddy Cue. Apple said it would change its policy and would pay artists royalties. Swift said she was "elated and relieved" upon Cue's announcement on Twitter at the time.

"Apple Music will pay artists for streaming even during customers' free trial period," Cue tweeted. "We hear you @taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love, Apple."

Taylor Swift has been an outspoken critic of free music streaming. She argues that it devalues artists' work, and she removed "1989" from market-leader Spotify late last year following a dispute over its free, ad-supported tier.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' needs to make at least $1.5 billion to be successful, and J.J. Abrams is 'terrified'

han the force awakens

From the outside, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" might seem like a slam dunk. But inside Disney, nerves are at an all-time high.

In a new report about the film on "60 Minutes," Steven Spielberg says of director J.J. Abrams, "Oh J.J. is terrified. There's a lot of pressure on J.J. to start paying Disney back for, you know, the franchise they bought from George Lucas."

Disney bought "Star Wars" and Lucasfilm from George Lucas for $4 billion in 2012. "Force Awakens" is the company's first movie in the franchise.

As the director hand-picked to lead the effort, J.J. Abrams is shouldering a lot of responsibility to please a fan base that is known to get vocal about its complaints.

According to "60 Minutes," "Force Awakens" needs to make at least $1.5 billion at the box office in order to be considered a success on Wall Street. It's hard to know exactly how this figure was determined, but with a filmmaking budget of $200 million, plus enormous marketing costs, and the investment in Lucas' franchise, it's not surprising that the goals are high.

"You just know that there will be people, no matter what you do, that will have issues with some aspect," Abrams said on "60 Minutes."

"You just know there is some number that is being thrown out there that will not be hit. You just know."

Box-office analysts think Abrams will be just fine, though. Tracking for the film already suggests $2.5 billion in international box office.

Eagle handler explains what happened when his bald eagle attacked Trump

Jonathan Wood said he knew the TIME magazine photo shoot with his 27-year-old bald eagle named "Uncle Sam" and GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump was going to be difficult.

On Wednesday, TIME released footage of the August cover shoot that included the eagle lunging at Trump, who flinched in terror. It also showed the eagle flipping Trump's hair while sitting on his shoulder.

Trump told Fox News Thursday he wasn't "really" scared of the majestic bird.

"I'm doing this for the cover of  TIME magazine," he said during the photo shoot. "I love TIME magazine. What you will do for a cover — this bird is seriously dangerous, but beautiful."

Wood, who has been Uncle Sam's handler for more than 20 years, said that he was especially "cranky" on the day of the shoot, having just spent a flight from Dallas to New York locked away in cargo.

Trump was also one of the only people to ever hold Uncle Sam on his shoulder — and for good reason. Uncle Sam is missing part of his wing and is blind in one eye, and thus has a difficult time balancing himself. This is why Uncle Sam messed up Trump's hair while sitting on his shoulder.

"I already knew that it was going to be a very difficult thing to do and I said that to Mr. Trump," he told INSIDER.

Wood added that when the eagle tried to bite Trump, causing the candidate to recoil in fear, he had forgotten to mention something very important: Uncle Sam, as bald eagles do, will claim and defend any space he's set on as his territory.

"I forgot to tell Mr. Trump about that whole territorial thing, 'cause the bird was sitting off kind of to the side," Wood said, adding that the bird only pretends it's going to bite, and that Uncle Sam hasn't bit anybody in the 20 years he has handled him.

The bald eagle has been in his fair share of photo shoots, previously posing with Stephen Colbert and former President Bill Clinton. Uncle Sam even reunited with Trump earlier this year, at a golf course.

Wood said that besides these few moments the shoot went very well. He even got to join an exclusive club while monitoring Uncle Sam.

"I had the honor of actually helping, ya know, fix Donald Trump's hair," he said. "So I'm the member of a very exclusive club of people that have actually touched his hair. And it's real."

Why Will Smith won't be back in the 'Independence Day' sequel

Will Smith independence day

Fox released the trailer for the "Independence Day" sequel, "Independence Day: Resurgence" Sunday afternoon, and the first thing you may have noticed is that Will Smith isn't returning for another battle with aliens.

Back in 2014, Deadline reported Smith turned down working on the film.

Previously, director Roland Emmerich, who will be returning to direct the sequel, they simply couldn't afford to cast Smith in the film because "he's too expensive."

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," Emmerich told The New York Daily News in 2013. "It would be too much."

Smith received a $20 million payday for 2001's boxer movie "Ali."

So how is the movie dealing with Smith's absence?

Easy, they're killing him off.

Along with the trailer, Fox launched a website called The War of 1996 showing a timeline of events since the film in 1996.

Entertainment Weekly spotted a nugget on the timeline showing that Smith's character, Colonel Steven Hiller, was conveniently killed April 27, 2007 while testing an alien hybrid ship.

will smith killed independence day 2

Here's the entire blurb:

"While test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller's valor in the War of 96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy's defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan."

It looks like Smith doesn't have the chance to even come back in any more potential sequels.

Though Smith won't be back, a majority of actors from the original 1996 movie will reprise their roles including Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, and Bill Pullman.

Maybe the movie doesn't need him. They signed on "The Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth as one of the film's leads.

The first film became the highest-grossing movie of 1996. It made over $817 million worldwide.

"Independence Day: Resurgence" will be in theaters June 24, 2016.

John Oliver offers a hilarious and useful guide to getting away with holiday regifting

John Oliver knows that regifting is sometimes a neccessary evil, so he gave the "Last Week Tonight" audience his three steps to giving away a gift you don't want.

"I’m here with a handy holiday guide to the art of regifting, just the easiest way to pawn off something you can’t stand, beside sending your child to summer camp," Oliver joked for a web exclusive (his show is on hiatus).

Here's the process as laid out by the British comedian:

regifting 1 john oliver

Step 1: Never regift to someone who knows the original gifter.

"The ideal place for regifting is an office Secret Santa," Oliver suggested, "because regifting there is like peeing in the ocean. Sure, it’s not right, but it’s ultimately a harmless solution to an urgent problem."

regifting 2 john oliver

Step 2: Personalize it.

The host said one should write a note to throw the recipient off the scent that this gift was not originally meant for them. Also, choose an appropriate regift.

"Be careful in cases of things that could be misconstrued such as a box of wine and a self-help book," he said.

Also, don't forget the wrapping paper. And if that's too much, at least use a gift bag.

regifting 2b john oliver

"Gift bags are the sweatpants of gift-wrapping," Oliver said. "Sure, it’s lazy, but it’s undeniably better than not putting anything on at all."

regifting 3 john oliver

Step 3: Only one gift per person.

“Do not attempt to redistribute all your gifts among your friends and family like a Ponzi scheme. You’re flying too close to the sun!" he emphasized. "And when your wings melt, they’ll probably smell like a cranberry bog because you made them from the scented candles you got from your sister-in-law."

Leonardo DiCaprio says 'The Revenant' was 'the most difficult film I've ever done' and he almost died

$

The RevenantLeonardo DiCaprio is playing a fur trapper who survives in spite of terrifying odds in "The Revenant," based on a true story, but the actor has had his own share of life-or-death experiences.

In a new interview with Wired, DiCaprio explains why "The Revenant" was the hardest film he's ever worked on and how he's come close to death a number of times.

"Every single day of this movie was difficult," he says of the shoot. "It was the most difficult film I’ve ever done."

DiCaprio elaborates that it was "physically grueling for everybody," but the hardest part for him was having to work in frozen rivers.

"Because I had elk skin on and a bear fur that weighed about 100 pounds when it got wet. And every day it was a challenge not to get hypothermia," he explained.

To prevent hypothermia, there was a special heater for DiCaprio on set.

"They had this machine that they put together — it was kind of like a giant hair dryer with octopus tentacles — so I could heat my feet and fingers after every take, because they got locked up with the cold," he said. "So they were basically blasting me with an octopus hair dryer after every single take for nine months."

He acknowledges that not many directors were drawn to the project because of how physically difficult it would be. After Alejandro González Iñárritu ("Birdman") was tied to the film, DiCaprio made the decision to jump in.

"I reread it and met him [Iñárritu] again, and I decided to embark on what I would characterize as more of a chapter of my life than a film commitment—because it was epic in every sense of the word," he said.

The actor also breaks down three different times he's come close to death, explaining why his friends have named him "the person they least want to do extreme adventures with."

From having a great white shark jump into his cage during a diving trip in South Africa to a parachute failing to deploy during a skydiving trip, DiCaprio has faced extreme danger.

He was also once on a plane that had to make an emergency landing following an engine exploding.

"Then there was this Delta Airlines flight to Russia... I was sitting there looking out at the wing, and the entire wing exploded in a fireball," he said. "I was the only one looking out at the moment this giant turbine exploded like a comet. It was crazy. They shut all the engines off for a couple of minutes, so you’re just sitting there gliding with absolutely no sound, and nobody in the plane was saying anything. It was a surreal experience. They started the engines back up, and we did an emergency landing at JFK."

DiCaprio also takes a turn for the political in the interview. He explains how Al Gore helped get him involved with environmental issues, his thoughts on what companies and political leaders can do to combat climate change, and he includes a shoutout to Bernie Sanders.

The 10 biggest box-office bombs of 2015

rock the kasbah

2015 was a strong year at the box office. Universal had three films make $1 billion each, the first time ever that a movie studio has pulled off the feat in a single year. And unless something goes very wrong, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is going to make a heck of a lot of money.

But there were also some massive duds released this year. Just this past weekend, Ron Howard's latest movie, the $100 million-budgeted "In the Heart of the Sea" starring Chris Hemsworth, made a dismal $11 million.

Though the future looks grim for "In the Heart of the Sea," there's still time for it to rebound. For these 10 titles below, sadly, the chance is gone, and they've failed miserably.

Here are the 10 worst box-office performers of 2015.

[Note: Eligible titles had to be released on 2,000 or more theaters during their theatrical run. All figures are from Box Office Mojo.

10. "Mortdecai" $7.6 million (domestic) / $39.5 million (foreign)

Though this bizarre Johnny Depp vehicle more than quadrupled its domestic take in overseas sales, it still didn't come close to earning the $60 million budget the film had. We could hope this is just a phase for Depp, but for good or bad, the actor loves this kind of eccentric, costume-y part.

9. "Victor Frankenstein" $5.6 million (domestic) / $24.7 million (foreign)

Trying to give the Frankenstein story a shot of youth by telling the story through the perspective of Igor (Daniel Radcliffe) who meets Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) as a young medical student didn't seem to grab audiences.

8. "Blackhat" $8 million (domestic) / $11.5 million (foreign)

"In the Heart of the Sea" wasn't the only bomb headed by Chris Hemsworth. In January, the thriller "Blackhat" directed by Michael Mann ("Heat," "Collateral") was a dud, too. This will only increase speculation that the hunky Hemsworth is only bankable when he's in Thor mode.

The new 'Star Wars' movie adds a bunch of female characters to its male-dominated universe

$

"The Force Awakens" is the first "Star Wars" movie in over a decade, and a direct sequel to the beloved original trilogy. But that's not the only reason that it is a big deal: it is also adding a bunch of female characters to its mostly male-dominated universe.

"Star Wars" created Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history, but now some new female characters will get to accompany her. Daisy Ridley (Rey), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), and Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata) all hope to make a mark in "The Force Awakens," as both heroes and villains.

In making a more diverse "Star Wars" universe, director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy wanted to make a galaxy far, far away look a lot more like the one we know.

"The Force Awakens" will be out in theaters on December 18th.

Jennifer Lawrence isn't interested in being in any 'Hunger Games' prequels

Following the remarks by Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns that "The Hunger Games" is like "Harry Potter" and that it will "live on and on and on," the face of the franchise has a few thoughts of her own.

"I wouldn't be involved," Jennifer Lawrence told Variety.

Lawrence, who made the franchise into a huge moneymaker for Lionsgate thanks to her portrayal of the story's main character, Katniss Everdeen, believes it's a little too soon to be talking about prequels. The final chapter in "The Hunger Games" franchise, "The Hunger Games — Mockingjay - Part 2," is still currently in theaters (and at the top of the box office, at the moment).

"They’ve got to let the body get cold, in my opinion,” she said.

Granted, this is from someone who has just wrapped up a franchise that she's been involved with since 2012. Harrison Ford didn't want anywhere near a blaster after "Return of the Jedi" wrapped.

And any prequels that were to be made for "The Hunger Games" likely would not involve Lawrence or another one of the previous main actors.

But with a franchise that just finished up with over $1 billion at the box office, it's never too early to think about how the property can expand.

Netflix says there is one blockbuster show the world is still missing (NFLX)

netflix Ted SarandosNetflix chief of content Ted Sarandos says there is one big show the world is missing, and hinted that Netflix could be the one to produce it.

"What’s missing on the global stage is a really great scripted series about contemporary life in the Middle East,” Sarandos said at the Dubai International Film Festival, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Most depictions outside of the Middle East are either historical or portray caricatures of what life in the Middle East would be."

Netflix has said it will double its output of original content to 31 scripted series next year, and part of this push could eventually be the accurate depiction of life in the Middle East that Sarandos was talking about. Netflix will launch in the region sometime before the end of 2016, as a piece of an aggressive international expansion plan.

Sarandos said that Netflix is already in contact with local content producers in the Middle East, according the The Hollywood Reporter, and that the company plans to run a series of content workshops in March of 2016.

Sarandos only tangentially referenced the censorship issues that persist in parts of the Middle East, especially around sexual content, and that could potentially hinder the type of honest and open show Sarandos described. "We want to be good global citizens and observe local laws," he said, but he also added that internet regulation is usually less restrictive than for TV and movies.

20 years later a 'Toy Story' creator shares an emotional story about the movie

toy story disney

20 years ago, Pete Docter's life changed when he was one of the four credited writers who came up with the original story for Pixar's first feature film, "Toy Story."

"Toy Story," which also happened to be the first computer-generated animated film, wasn't just a hit at the box office when it opened in 1995 (it has a lifetime domestic gross of $191.7 million, or $365.8 million if going by 2015 ticket prices). It changed the way audiences wanted their animation.

"Toy Story" was well-executed on a number of levels not previously expected from cartoons — from the jokes that could work for parents as well as they do for kids, to the powerful story of a toy cowboy named Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) who becomes jealous when the spaceman action figure, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), becomes the new "it" toy of the household.

And two decades later, Docter is still witness to the movie's powerful effect.

On the phone with Business Insider from Havana, Cuba, following his latest directing effort "Inside Out" being nominated for Best Animated Film at the Golden Globes, Docter recalled his latest "Toy Story" encounter.

"Last night I was talking to a woman who's 51 years old and she started crying as she was talking about the deep connection she feels 'Toy Story' has with her and her son," Docter told BI. "She said they would sit and watch the film and she felt it really taught him a lot of things and they connected through it."

But Docter is the first to admit that, as the filmmakers tried to get the movie off the ground so many years ago, none of them thought it would become so immense.

"We were just trying to tell the story and use the technology in a way that had never been done before," Docter said.

Pete Docter Jason Merritt GettyBut what he and his follow Pixar creators — including "Toy Story" director and Pixar head John Lasseter — have done is revolutionize not just the way we think about animated movies, but also the Disney animation brand.

Once in a funk telling the same hand-drawn stories handed down by Walt Disney, the company acquired Pixar's more mature tales and instantly moved back to being an innovator of the medium. That included not just the release of three more "Toy Story" movies, but other award-winning — and more importantly — unconventional animated movies like "Monsters, Inc.," "Finding Nemo," "WALL-E," and "Inside Out," to name just a few.

"Twenty years later and halfway around the world the film still affects people," Docter said. "I would never have been able to forecast that."

And it's not over.

A "Toy Story 4" is in the works, as reported earlier this year. Not much detail about it has been released, other than hints that it won't be a continuation of the trilogy, which Docter confirmed to BI.

"It feels very different," said Docter, who also told us Lasseter is directing the next entry. "There are a lot of the same characters from the first three, but to me it feels like a new direction. It's pretty neat."

"Toy Story 4" is slated to be released by Disney in 2018.

Melissa McCarthy says she's 'shocked and heartbroken' over 'Mike & Molly' cancellation

mike and molly canceled cbs

"Mike & Molly" is finished. That's according to the CBS comedy's stars.

Melissa McCarthy weighed in on the show's cancellation.

"I was shocked and heartbroken when @CBS canceled #MikeAndMolly," she wrote on Twitter. "I would have shot this show for 50 more years. I'll miss my 2nd family."

It all started when Billy Gardell, who plays Mike, tweeted that the show was going into its last episodes.

"Mike and Molly returns Jan 6, it will be our last episodes," he tweeted. "There are 13 of them. Thank you everyone who supported us."

Then, Rondi Reed — who plays Mike's mother, Peggy — said on Facebook that "Mike & Molly" had been canceled and that the upcoming sixth season will be its last.

"Before you hear it elsewhere (and some already have) this is the Final and 6th Season of 'Mike & Molly' on CBS," Reed wrote.

She also said that CBS has cut its original 22-episode order to just 13 episodes.

"We are done taping as of January 27th, 2016 and I am not sure exactly when/if the episodes will all be aired," she said. "The network has its reasons, and I will not get into a debate, discussion, or campaign to get them to change their minds."

Reed also said that the production companies behind the show, Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre's Bonanza Productions, have been unable to find a new home for the show.

Business Insider reached out to CBS for comment.

"Mike & Molly" did see an 11% reduction in the advertiser-coveted 18- to 49-year-old audience in season five year-over-year. That may be enough for the network to cancel the show, since CBS is trying to bring over younger viewers. McCarthy's likely high salary would work against the show here, as well. Otherwise, its total audience stayed pretty stable with 8.4 million viewers.

McCarthy's career has exploded in the last few years. Without the show, her schedule opens up to do more movies.

The comedy, which centers on a couple who meet in a Chicago Overeaters Anonymous group and fall in love, has won two Emmys, including Best Actress for McCarthy in 2011, and Cinematography earlier this year. It's currently scheduled to return for season six on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 8:30 p.m.

There’s only one Christmas song more popular than Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’

There are certain songs that can always get you in the holiday spirit, whether it’s Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” or Ella Fitzgerald’s “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”

But one song that is seemingly universally loved is Mariah Carey’s now iconic hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” The jam has dominated Billboard charts for the past 11 years, helped make her “Merry Christmas” 1994 album the best-selling Christmas album of all time.

The song has been ubiquitous as we go about our holiday shopping — until now.

The 1994 hit has finally been dethroned, according to the company PlayNetwork, which is responsible for the music you hear while shopping in over 400 retail stores, from Converse to Marc Jacobs.

In a press release, PlayNetwork revealed the top 20 songs brands are playing this year in stores and Carey’s song is now in 2nd place the season, having been overtaken by The Shin’s cover of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime.”

If that doesn’t sound familiar, you can listen below — you’ll probably recognize it once you hear it.

Carey’s song came in second, followed by Christina Aguilera’s “Christmas Time,” the Waitresses “Christmas Wrapping,” and Jack Johnson’s “Someday At Christmas.”

PlayNetwork received the data from retail partners in over 100,000 locations in 110 countries that they then used to create the ranking. So while these songs might not be on your personal Christmas playlist, they’ll be dominating the store speakers while you shop.

Keep reading to see the top 20 songs of the season, according to PlayNetwork:

1) The Shins "Wonderful Christmastime"

2) Mariah Carey "All I Want For Christmas Is You"

3) Christina Aguilera "Christmas Time"
